On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Julia and Hannah from the band Hawxx. Julia is the bass player and back vocalist, while Hannah is the guitarist and back vocalist. Pipeman shares a funny encounter he had with the band earlier in the day, almost mistaking them for someone else. He emphasizes the importance of artists expressing themselves beyond genre labels and encourages them to share what they're truly all about.

Hawxx describes themselves as a metal band with a message. They channel their anger and use their music to talk about important issues within the metal scene and beyond. They aim to have conversations with their audience and make everyone feel included. Their latest single, "Soul Breaking Machines," addresses environmental concerns, showcasing their commitment to addressing serious topics through their powerful music.

Pipeman discusses the evolution of metal and the positive changes he sees today, such as the breaking down of barriers and the inclusion of women in the genre. Hawxx shares their experiences with sexism in the industry but also highlights the progress being made. They believe in the power of representation and hope to inspire more girls and children to pick up instruments and find their own voices.

Looking beyond Download Festival, Hawxx plans to continue promoting their new single and upcoming gigs. They tease potential tours later in the year without revealing details just yet. Listeners are encouraged to connect with the band on social media and check out their music video for "Soul Breaking Machines," which combines music with footage from recent environmental protests, creating a thought-provoking and engaging experience.

Pipeman concludes the conversation by emphasizing the importance of using their platform to spread messages that need to be heard. Hawxx shares their strong belief in taking a position and speaking out on important issues, even if it means not being liked by everyone. They see it as a responsibility to use their powerful voice to create positive change and impact listeners' lives.

0:00 Hey, you love them too, that's sure. I'm come from for see why for you Wake up America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipeman on W four CWY dot com west pom Beats, his number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man Dream the line, So it's my mind? So is your dream? Is the line? This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe MANW four c Y Radio at Download Festival.

1:02 And I'm here with Dudia face player and backy vocals from Hooks and Hannah guitarist and backy vocalisted Hulks. Nice. Okay, So I won't keep you in suspense too long. I told you I was gonna bring up something when we saw the interview. So earlier, very rarely during the day can I sneak out to even eat. But earlier I went out to get a slice of pizza, and I actually walked by you guys, And like, when I'm walking in the crowd compared to back here or somebody's on the stage, like I don't recognize people Like I've artists and I'm friends with they'll come up to me and festival like, hey, what's up? Pipe Man? I'm like who the fuck was that? You know, it's like somebody big two.

1:45 I'm like, I don't know who they are, but I was literally gonna walk up to you too. With your glasses. I'm like, badass glasses. Yours I've seen before. I'm like, I would wear those, Like I almost bought those one time, like because I like cool shit like that, and yours with the lightning bolts hanging down, So I mean, that would have been funny if I did that. And then you came in here and we're doing the interview and shit like that's happened to me before. Okay, I add some There was this girl in the press tent one time years ago and I was like, man, that's a badass tattoo. And she's like, yeah, your hair is badass, and then she goes, do you know where I find Pipeman. I'm like, here, it's wild, right, So let's tell the listeners a little bit about you guys for those that don't know, how would you explain yourself as artists? Not genre bullshit, because that that just boxes artists, and I like artists to tell me what they're all about. All right, we're hawks, Yes we are a mental band, but we have a message. We're angry, as you should be. We like to have fun, we like to have a good time, but we're also so angry and we want to talk about issues in the metal scene with people. We don't want to speak to people, we want to have a conversation. And I think that's what it's about. And when we get on stage on Sunday, which we can't wait, it's it's so,

3:17 it's kind of we're kind of nervous. It's not gonna lie. It's a big deal. It's only the twentieth anniversary of download. Come on, we're your nervous. Is there massive tent? But we're gonna channel our rage and we're gonna do the thing we do, which is communicate with the audience. Talk to the audience, women at the front, non binary people to the front, anyone who feels excluded in the scene or like they don't belong or like they want to scream out with us. They're welcome and we want to make them feel welcome. And we don't just talk about that. Like the latest single that came out last week, sold Breaking Machines, is about the environment. We talk about different topics that we are concerned about and that we feel need more exposure because metal is such a powerful force, we can't just be mindless fun. We also need to talk about serious shit sometimes.

4:00 You know. I love it because to me, that is what metal is about. It's about being able to express and talk about the real issues. You know. I go way back in metal. It's always been like that. One thing I do like better about today that made me angry in the day is the freaking gate keeping back in the day. And like, I'm into punk end metal. I was along here. I couldn't go to punk shows. Punks can go to metal shows. And you couldn't like this band if you liked this band and crap like that. Like I was at the first Metallica show ever when they when Black came out, Me and my friends were like, what a bunch of posers, you know, and it's like stupid, Like why do we do this? We should all band together.

4:46 And that's why I'm seeing more of now that. I love the blending of genres. People were a big family. Now there there's nobody's excluded. We're all included no matter who we are, and that and that's what's cool too about you guys sending a message to people. I like the idea of conversations. I was just telling my daughter the other day. She was talking about sometime I'm like, you're never going to convince somebody by being angry at them, yelling at them, telling them what they have to do. You have to talk to them and have a conversation. That's how you convert them to understand what you're saying. Do you agree it's important. It's important to be angry as well. Sometimes well angry for sure. Yeah, you reach boiling point and you just gotta scream. Man, you gotta be angry. And music is such a great, a great way to channel that. But I think we explain why it's not just anger and that's it. You know, we get on stage, we're angry, and I know it's very good at that. She introduces the songs and and we do take time to have a little bit of speaking and say this is what this song is about. This is important because and people agree with us. We had We had great reactions at gigs, even when people don't know us. Everyone can relate to some issues. You know, are you a woman, are you afraid to walk home at night on your own? And why are you. You shouldn't be afraid. It's a problem. We need to talk and everyone needs to talk about this insurgent. You know, there's somebody I saw on TikTok that's here from the UK, and I love her. I wonder if you guys are Delilah Bond. Do you know that name's fantastic Ah, She's amazing because she

6:20 is freaking angry. But what a great message and what she's doing for women, because that's another thing too. Back in the day, there was a gate keeping in metal for women, and I think it's so cool now that women are probably more way more badass than the men in metal, And like, I just love it that you guys have such a great voice in metal, because it should be that way, and you have a lot to say, you have a lot to be angry about. I think we were saying earlier that sometimes if you're in a female metal band, you can feel somehow protected. Sometimes people won't give you like this sexism that say a woman like a female punter or a female in a male band gut But like we've all been there, Like we've been told things like smiles to smile more, or being treated like we don't know how to play, or someone tried to set up my pedal board and I'm like, what you like, get off, get off my equipment, it's mine And then he really my pedal case and it's like, like, you don't know what you're doing. This is my equipment. Why do you assume that I don't know how to use my equipment?

7:26 This is stupid. It's so stupid. And it's like an you broken it now because you're just like gorilla, like what are you doing it? Like an ape? Right? That's so true too, And that's why I think women are great and metal too, because women are generally passionate and metal is a passionate type of genre, you know. And I don't know. I just think there's so many badass women now and they're way more badass than back in the day when they weren't allowed to be, more badass than the men that wouldn't let them in. Well, the more you know, the more representation there is, the more likely that you know, if you if you see it, you can become it, you know. Like when when I was growing up, there wasn't like a download, there wasn't that many women on the stage. Yeah, and now there's more, and it's like brilliant. If we can inspire you know, more girls, more children, to to pick up instruments, to do anything, to to to have a voice, that's that's fantastic. That would be admission achieved. I love it.

8:28 I love it. So when are you got going on? Past download after download? Were you going to do? How are you going to top that? Good question? I would say, this is I think this is my ninth download of becoming as a fan for so many years? Wow, is that such a trip that you go from being a fan of being up on the stage. I actually can't. Yeah, I can't, like a lot of anxiety dreams. Yeah, I can't even believe it. So I'm just going to be dining out on this basically for the rest of my life. But I love it. Oh yeah, I mean we've just had a new single, outsil breaking Machine, so we're gonna continue to push that and that life. Got food gigs coming up in the summer, hopefully a couple of tours later on in the year, but hopefully that should come up.

9:18 And how has everybody connect to you guys on socials and on the web so they can find out about those tours at Hawks Music everywhere everywhere, at Hawks Music HWXX, where everywhere. You can't miss us and listen if they see they can't miss you either, you know, like and if it was a couple of months ago, you would have been like my blue twin too. And so, is there anything we want the listeners to know that we haven't covered yet that you want inform them of about you guys? I didn't. Is there anything that we haven't covered yet that we want to inform the listeners about about you guys? Is there anything else you want to tell them that we haven't covered yet? I mean, check out the Soul Breaking Machines video.

10:09 It's we're so proud of those videos. It's unlike anything we've ever done before. It's a kind of docke music video. So it uses footage from the recent Extension Rebellion protest and talks to people about their opinions and why the subject matters to them. It's really really interesting and yeah, Adam Adam rav Speed was such a good director and yeah, amazing. And you know, on that note too, it's like there's people out there gatekeepers that are like, oh, just play the music, you know, don't blah blah, blah blah blah. I've seen it at shows. We're like the lead singer will be talking about something like people beyond just play No, if you have the stage to be able to spread a message that needs to be spread.

10:58 Why I didn't like it's sometimes it's easier to be liked by more people if you're careful and if you don't take a position. Yeah, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself. I think I used to be a bit like that, you know, with previous bands, where I didn't really have the voice that I have now with these guys, I didn't feel as strong, but I felt that the issues were still there. Yeah, and now I feel like it's a responsibility because you have a powerful voice. You have people listening to you, people of old age, it is even very young people that it might be life changing. They might hear a song of yours and and learn something that's going to, you know, change your entire life, or pick up an instrument like you were saying, you know, yeah, and it's important to have a position and if if people don't want to listen to us. And there's a famous Kark Cobain interview where he was saying exactly that. He was saying, if there are big people listening to our music, racist people, we don't want them, don't buy our records exactly.

11:50 And I feel like it's a strong statement. But but you got to be strong if you want to be an artist and you want to be able to sleep at night and you want to do your job properly, I feel like you have to take a position. And that's what we're trying to do. I guess we are aware that we have a message, so so important what you said too about you know, Kurt Cobain, because perfect example, it's just talking to my young a story the other day and she's like, did you see the Roger Waters video? And we're Jewish and she's like, I will never listen to Pink Floyd ever again. And I support that because listen, how can you support people that are hating your people just because you like their music? Like so same as an artist, how can you keep your mouth shut? Like that's to me hypocritical. You you have a voice, you're up there, your people look up to you. You should be spreading a good message. That's your message, and nobody should tell you not to. So bravo just be quite happy not to be confronted about those things that kind of maybe it's easier to live in a little bit of denial.

13:01 So I think it's maybe a bit of a security blanket when people don't kind of come on board with that because it is it's difficult, and it's like there's a difficult conversation to having a difficult thing to confront. Yeah, but you know, let's do it and let's try and make things better. Yeah. You can't change the world if you don't open your mouth, simple as that. And you guys are doing it. So for that, even more than the music, I love that because we need more people opening their mouth because you have such a big platform for people to listen to. So thank you for doing that and thanks for being on the Adventures of plate Man. My pleasure. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of plate Man. I'm w for CUI Radio.
