On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by Carter and Thomas from the band Futurebirds. The interview begins on a light note, with Pipeman joking around and getting the band members laughing. They discuss how tedious press interviews can be and the typical questions they receive about their band name, which leads to a funny discussion about the different ways bands come up with their names. Pipeman then asks the band about their music genre and suggests they come up with their own genre that only their band is in. Carter describes their band as "a rusty chainsaw dropped into a tropical aquarium," and Thomas coins the name "Chainsaw Cyro." They further expand on this and come up with "Cosmic Chainsaw" as their unique music genre, which they joke will catch on soon. The conversation then shifts to the music festival they're attending, Shaky Knees, and how they're enjoying their time there. They talk about the different bands they've seen, such as The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 311, and The Mars Volta. They discuss how surprised they were by the crowd size at 311's performance compared to The Mars Volta. You can find Futurebirds all over social media if you want to connect with them, and the guys are pretty responsive over Instagram so be sure to leave them a nice message!

04 Hey, you love them too, that's sure. I'm come. I'm see why for you Why Coup of America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipe Man on W four C why dot com. West Pond Beach is number one Internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures NW four C Y Radio. And I'm here with Thomas and Carter from Future Birds. Nice. And we didn't even start yet. I already got you laughing that. That's a great compliment to me because it's the pipe Man. Yeah, you know, that's a great compliment to me because press is boring as shit, so like we gotta make it fun. You know, you're an artist, like I always feel bad for us. I'm like, man, that must be boring as ship with all these people they have to go up to to have these scripts, and you know, it's like, so, how'd you get your band name? Figuring
34 you're about to ask us the band name? How did you ask me? II? Though? Right, I was just telling the story to the girls before about you know, the band August Burns Red. So they're they're like a metalcore band and they make up a different story every time. Somebody asked them their band name, and it's usually a pre horrific story to get the expression. One time, I I went in a logged onto our Wikipedia page and I just I went to the van Halen Wikipedia page and just copied it. Just changed that, just changed the names to all of our names. This the funk with people. Oh that's perfect because I always I always say, man, like I tell other presuppressed people, I'm like, if it's in Wikipedia, don't fucking ask because either it's already known or it's wrong.
24 Well, you know, I don't. I don't want to come across as too critical because I know that doing press isn't has its challenges as well, you know, getting getting stuff out of people. But yeah, in some ways it's like, man, like did if you would have googled future birds one time, you would have had like twenty articles with that explanation of where we got our name from. You know, it's a and it's not even the important most of the time. No, it's it's it's it doesn't inform really anything else. Definitely not in our case. It's not entertaining. Like if I'm somebody listening to an interview, I think I'm gonna turn it off after that, like because it's like, oh my god, when am I in history class? Now? What I do like to ask, though, is because I hate freakin genres, Like there's too many of them nowadays.
15 I don't even know what some of them mean. So if you were to come up with your own genre, because like that only your band was in, you know, because it's kind of like that nowadays, that it's so specific that there's like only a handful in the in the genre, what would you name it? And I'll listen, this isn't a serious question. Have fun with this. One time our band was described as a rusty chainsaw that got dropped into a tropical aquarium, and I think to this day that's my favorite favorite description of the band. I love that. Yeah, okay, so post chainsaw scrock, there you go. I love it. Yeah, there it is. I love it. There you go see And I bet you that's gonna catch on at some point. There'll be some bad let's say this air view, like, yeah, that's what genre I want to be in, this comic chainsaw. Oh so how is it here at Shaking Nice?
21 Are you having fun yet? We've been having a blast. We've been here all three days now seen some amazing acts. Oh they were badass. Could you believe the crowd for three eleven, Like it was insane. I was at three eleven and I went over to the other main stage for Mars Volta, and I was like, I can't believe three eleven like had a way bigger crowd, really like way bigger, Like you couldn't even walk to the front if you were in the back at three eleven, And at Mars Volta, I just shot right and I was very comfortable upfront. Nobody pressing on me. I think, you know, they're three eleven, is you know, somewhat of you know, nostalgic thing for at least for Carter and I. You know, we're we grew up with our brothers Jam and all those records and everything. So I was like, I can't not go see that. I know, you know, it's I think, and they're still bad. I think at Yeah, they put on a really great show.
24 We were we were we were thoroughly entertained. That was it was. We had a blast, Yeah, no doubt. I think also too, I felt bad for Mars Walta because they were a sandwiched in between three eleven and Tenacious D. And I think that's what happened. All the people stayed over there, so they went would save their spot for Tenacious D. That's that's exactly what we did. I was I would like to go see Mars Walta, but you know, yeah, I'm gonna I can just stay here, especially you know they hook you up with the artists pass and so you're like, got a comfortable place to sit and hang and write, get free drinks and you know totally. Yeah, I was talking. You're a tour manager. So I'm glad you're here today because I think it makes for a better interview than the day of show, because there's only two things that could happen.
10 You're either before the show where people are trying to get him zone to do their set, or it's after where you just spent all your energy on stage and you're like you're not in the mood, right Yeah. And we were like, well, if we schedule our interviews for Sunday, that means we have to go the third day. There you go, wives and girlfriends like you coming home like, ah, we gotta work. That is brilliant. I love it because you couldn't just say Hey, I'm staying to see the sets. You know they'll be like, no, no, fuck you come home. No, we can't. We got work to do. So what do you do when you're not doing? What is your passion when there's no music? Like if you if music, we're not an option didn't exist anymore. Now, what's your passion? Carter will probably be fishing somewhere.
06 I don't know what i'd be doing. See that's tough. Yeah, I don't seeing you know what that tells me that you're a true musician. Well, we were just talking to somebody else and they were like, what would you guys be doing if you weren't I if you know, if you weren't where would you be now if you weren't, if you hadn't been in the band? And I was like, I I honestly don't know. None of us really had a backup plan of any kind. We just all we we got college degrees and we didn't want to go work so nice you know, that's the only reason we were able to like eat it out. We've been doing this for fourteen years now, so it's like, you know, those first ten you know, like if there was something better to do, it's probably got it, I know, right. I mean like I remember, you know, like Metallica for ten years eight Bologney sandwiches without bread, you know, and like if they didn't have to stay in power, I think of stuff like that. If they didn't have to stay in power, there'd be no Metallica today. Yeah, you know, and that's true of a band like listen, we know in this Indus Street there's no such thing as an overnight success. An overnight success takes like twenty years. Yeah, exactly ten years overnight, right, or you know, people would be like, you know, check out this new band future Birds. It's like, man, we're not. We went around for a decade plus. I can top that one. My son, my son came home one day he's like, Dad, I just heard this new band. They're really good. They're called
37 Arrowsmith. And I was like, yeah, they were a new band when I was a kid too. Oh that's new band thirty years running. I know, right totally. So what's going on after shaking Kneeds? Besides having to go home? We're actually playing the Rhyman in Nashville in a couple of weeks. It's gonna be really sweet. We're looking forward to that and then we have some shows at the end of the month that the wind Jammer and Charleston or North of Charleston and I the Palms. It's awesome venue on the beach and we've been doing it for a Memorial Day the past three years. And now we're making a record in June, Yeah, Texas to record a record, and then we're just gonna be touring the rest of the summer and fall and winter, so in the next spring and the next summer, in the next twenty years. Right, So this new album, what would what would you say is the same and what's different about it than previous music?
33 And do you think the COVID lockdown created some new creativity for you for writing music? Like I take that as the positive of the lockdown for musicians, is it had a chance to get off that hamster wheel and literally create like it used to be. Sure, I mean, yeah, I agreed, there is there's a lot more time to to sit down and focus on stuff when you didn't have a million other things going on and you know, you're trying to hustle to make everything else work. And yes, I think I don't know that. I think this the new record is still kind of coming together in a lot of ways. You know. We did some demo sessions with the producer and got a lot of good songs from that, and but we're not really sure exactly where it's gonna go. Yeah. Yeah, when you say new record, you talk about the one like the most recent things, the one you're doing do in June. What's that the one that you're gonna do in June? Okay, yeah, but you could talk about whatever you want. It's your world. I'm just living in it. Or well, we recorded the last thing we put out, the two bloomin epas with carl A. Broom from My Morning Jacket, and we recorded those during the pandemic and so it was kind of this weird like what do we do?
45 How do we act? But like the once we got in there is just like oh yeah, like this is we're back to business, you know, we're back to the good stuff. And it's just like everything locked in and yeah, so cool. So how do people reach you? Like it may seem like kind of a stupid thing, but I want to make sure everybody can to connect with you on social media to web. There might be people listening that they have no clue who you are, so let's get them to know who you are. Yeah, here at Future Birds you know, Instagram, Twitter, and find a Spotify. We're all ever but yeah, we're pretty We're pretty communicative via Instagram for sure. Nice. Yeah, we love we love people reaching out, So it's actually you doing it. Yeah, yeah, I like to point that out so people know that they can you know when they're interacting with you on Instagram, that they're interacting with you and not like somebody running your Instagram. So I love that absolutely. Yeah.
41 Yeah, any other final words you want to leave our listeners with that we haven't touched on that they need to know about Future Birds. You need to come see us on tour and we will wherever you are at some point. That's flocking into rock nice. And it is the hat you're wearing one of your merch because I tell the listener and say, have to buy merch to listen on my show. Like that, we pretty much exclusively wear our own merch. That's I guess that's a benefit of when you design cool stuff, you know, then you don't then it feels good to wear it, you know. And yeah, and it's marketing. You know, people are like totally. People see you in there, like, that's that's cool hat?
26 What is that? I just had that discussion with somebody yesterday there, like they said something about bands wearing their own merch. I'm like, well, why wouldn't you? First of all, if you're not going to wear it, why would anybody else wear it? Exactly? Second of all, like you said, you got your branding and promoting yourself, you should. I'm also not trying to buy a T shirt and we had to pay them in all these days. True story. You actually had somebody come up to us yesterday after the show. We were all a bunch of at least four of us were all wearing different Future Birds hats, and he was like he walked up and it's like man like like I kept looking at you guys, be like, man, that that hat's awesome. Man, that hat's awesome too, And I realized they're all your own hats, Like yeah, man, like make cool shit. We're cool shit, right, you gotta I would make shit that I would want to wear or otherwise, why would anybody else want to wear? Absolutely? There you go. I love it. Well, thanks guys for being badass, and thanks for being on the Adventures of pipe Man by man Man, Come on. Thanks for having us, Man than you got it. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of pipe Man.
