On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by Brandon and Max of Fidlar. The band's name stands for "Fuck it Dog Life's a Risk", which is a skateboarding term that was adapted to partying when they started the band. Pipeman shares his story of recovering from two heart attacks while surfing before being locked down due to the pandemic. Brandon mentions that he has nightmares about having a heart attack on a wave, but also talks about the healing powers of the ocean and how French doctors prescribe surfing to heart patients. Pipeman and Brandon have a conversation about not boxing artists into genres and how Fidlar's music is influenced by punk, rock, hip-hop, and other genres. They also discuss the songwriting process and how they typically start with a riff or melody and build from there. Pipeman asks Brandon and Max about their favorite live shows and Brandon mentions a show in San Francisco where they played with Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall. Max talks about a show in Hamburg, Germany, where they played in a small club and the crowd went wild. They also talk about the challenges of touring, such as being away from home and the toll it takes on mental health. Brandon and Max share some of their coping mechanisms, such as meditation, exercise, and journaling. Pipeman asks about the future of Fidlar and they mention their upcoming album and tour plans. The episode ends with Pipeman thanking Brandon and Max for joining him and wishing them the best of luck on their upcoming tour. If you want to keep up with the band and what they’re doing and follow them on social media, you can find all the information you need by simply googling FIDLAR and everything you need should pop up!

00 Hey, you love them too? Sure, I'm come. I'm to see why for you. Why Up America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipeman on W four so white dot Com. West Palm Beach is number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. Where who drugs Drugs?
57 This is pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man W four c Y Radio. And I'm here with Brandon and Max of Fiddler. Yes. Nice, and welcome to Shaky Knees. Thanks, it's good to be back. I'm kind of like really excited that you guys are here because I normally do all like the punk and metal festivals. I've never done this once. I'm like, oh, I'm not gonna have too many of my kind here, and here you are. Yeah, And I'm a skater and a surfer, so you're like, right up my alley. Perfect. So it worked out that we got to talk here. So first thing I want to do is I never do band names, but I want you guys to tell the audience what it is an acronym for Kazoo's Funny as Shit. It stands for fuck it dog Life's a risk, I love it. Yeah, And that's a skate term. Too, right. Yeah, it came from like our singer Zach used to hang out with these skaters, Adrian, what says last thing?
53 Adrid? Adrian Adrid and I don't know. It's just some like skate dudes and they would say it in regards to bombing hills or whatever. And then we started a band and just adapted it to like partying. I love it. I love it. And what I also loved too is you're here. We went through a you know, a few years. I was weird, but man, you guys were about to reset and start off new and then we got locked down. And I had like a similar type of story because I had two heart attack surfing while surfing. After the second one, I recovered for a year. I went back to Costa Rica, I went surfing. I didn't die, I didn't have a heart attack, and then I came home in three days later we were locked down. I'm like water.
46 Yeah. The first one was in Hawaii. It was after the water. The second one trip too, because I felt this weird feeling while surfing. I surfed like four or five waves having a heart attack and I didn't even know. I just thought I was tired. What the dre no noubt. And then the last one, I was like on a ten foot wave and I had a massive heart attack on the wave, and I was like, fuck, not again. That's exactly what I mean. You have to have a sense of humor about it totally. But like I still it doesn't stop me. I still have you heard of anyone else having a heart attack on a wave? Yeah? You know, I've been researching a lot lately that there's like there's some like famous surfer that has had like three heart attacks on waves and he's still you know, but it is good for you because like actually in France, the doctors there for heart patience, they don't give them meds. They prescribe surfing to them. Really, you fucking believe that the healing powers of the ocean. I'm telling you man and my choreologists.
58 Every time I go see him, which I did just a few days ago, he goes, you're still surfing, right, I'm like yeah, he goes good. Yeah, And then the next question is this is great because I did smoke cigarettes until that first art attack. But he goes, he's still smoking rain. He's not talking about cigarettes, And I'm like, yeah, he goes Okay, good, So there it is. That's the best prescription ever, right, I know we didn't surfing that I'm gonna start a new thing, man, Like it's like I'm gonna take cardiac patience and it's like, here, here's your prescription. Some weed and a surfboard. Have at it. Yeah. So for our listeners who have not heard you guys before, which I find unreal if they haven't, describe your music for them, not as a genre, because I hate that fucking shit. I hate like boxing artists into this, Oh you're surf, skate punk, blah blah blah. Like there's like ten words to a genre nowadays, So how would you describe it? Just loud? I like that. That's always a good start. Fun that's the key word right there, because that's one thing I know about you guys, and I don't understand. Like I interview a lot of bands and some of them just take themselves way too seriously. This isn't like a corporate job, Okay, it's supposed to be fun. Yeah, Like, if you're not having fun, why do it? It's not you know, it's not like a business where you're making a shitload of money that
28 it's worth definitely not, you know the whole key, especially punk, Like if you're a punk band as acting like a business, I think there's something wrong. It's gotta be fun. It's for the audience too, because it's like it's expensive to go to a show or to go to a festival, and you want them to have a good time. You know. Sometimes you see bands where it's like so bored. It's just like stage Yeah, that shit's contagious. Like if you're not having fun, then they're not gonna have fun, no doubt. It's like, what is anyone doing here? It's all about it's all about the live show, and it's about like gain involved. That's why I missed during COVID. It's like being in it. Like all these bands were doing live streams and I'm cool with that because I need to make money. But it's not the same. It's not same for you.
15 Fiddler doesn't really translate on the live stream no exactly, and how do you like, how does any band do that? Because when you're doing live show, you feed off the audience. You need that energy and no doubt, like when you got people out there singing your song and motion and shit like that, like that just gets you. I don't know. If I was up there, I'd be juiced by that. If I was doing live stream, might be bored to death. It's the it's the best high, No like that feeling. What's the best story? You guys? You might have different stories that you have, and all your time doing this or all your time involved in music per set, it's all a bit fuzzy. But I don't know what's the funniest wolf Let's best or the funniest what's the funniest shit that's happened? I don't know. So there is a girl that like shit off of an RV while we were playing. We were playing in front of a RV at a house party and then we like everyone started like yelling and there was just a person shitting off the roof of the RV. Wow, that's hardcore right there. You know what's funny about that is I asked that question a lot of and that's the fourth time I've had a story to actually. But but the other three were the artists shifting themselves on stage.
38 I think we've dodged that bullet. That's a good bullet because you gotta keep playing like they just stop on its you just gotta keep playing. How about Okay, you were talking about the shape I was at. I forget which festival it was. I think it was Laddered in Life or something. It was all over the news. And the chick in the band pe dudes mouth on stage. You remember that. I was listen. I was as close as stage as you are to me. Yeah, and I saw it coming and I'm like, fuck, I'm aut of you. Oh, and the dude loved it. It's a special type of person. Well, you know, she forgot to go to the bathroom before going on stage. You can't leave the stage because she's at first, I think it started as a joke because she was like, man, I really gotta go peet. And then she made some joke like anybody want me to pee in her mouth or something.
31 This redneck dude raising sad. He's all excited and he was one, and he was all excited. He got up and he was like shaking like a dog and then sprayed it out to a crowd. All right, that's pretty hardcore. And then you know, back in the day, a Chronos from Venom used to throw buckets of pee out at the crowd, So you know, fun times, so not as bad as no, No, you know, yeah, I guess someone shitting off the roof of an RV is kind of like small potae some other stories. So what do you have going on after shaking leaves? What's coming up that you want people to know about. We're just working on new tunes, going to try to put out some more music, play more shows, rinse, repeat, just keep doing that nice. Do you think with the new music with every day that happened with COVID, do you think it helps you in writing new music now? Because I find some artists they had time to get off that hamster wheel and like just constant and think about how to be creative and even focus on what they wanted to do with their music, which you couldn't do for a while because you're so busy just in the hamster wheel. Yeah, I think so, I mean just yeah, it's I feel like, I don't know, maybe we are like excited about touring in a way that we weren't before, and kind of new music and touring goes hand in hand. So I think there's like a renewed like we're just want to go do stuff nice where yeah, we were just touring all the time before. Yeah, when you're touring a lot, like you get excited about recording, and then when you're not touring
05 here it's like, I don't know, I feel like we've been writing songs like specifically to play live. I love it. So it's like, because that's that's the way, that's what we want to be right now, that's why it should be. So let's tell everybody real quick how they connect to you guys on the web, on socials, get your music, get your merch because that's really important because ours don't survive without merch. Yeah. I think if you just google Fiddlar you could probably find all that. It's pretty easy. Yeah, there you go, all caps. So everybody check out Fiddlar because they are badass. Go to their site, go go to their socials, connect and some show like smash that subscribe that's it, that's it, and go to a show because that's the key right there, that's the thing. Buyas shirts and comes to us play love it. Well. Thanks guys for being here at Shaking Knees and thanks for being on the Adventures of pipe Man. Yeah man, thank you. Hey, what's up. This is Brandon and Max from Fidlar and you're listening to the Pipeman on wforcy dot com. Thank you for listening to the adventures of Pipeman. I'm W for CUI Radio.
