On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Laurence Beveridge from the band Fearless Vampire Killers. They are at the 20th anniversary of Download festival, and it's their fourth time attending. Laurence expresses their honor to be part of such a significant milestone and reminisces about watching the festival on TV as kids and eventually getting the opportunity to perform. They even headlined a stage one year, which was an amazing experience. Pipeman and Laurence discuss the impressive lineup of this year's festival, including bands like Metallica, Slipknot, and Bring Me the Horizon, which brings a fresh energy to the UK music scene.
Pipeman brings up an interesting story about Fearless Vampire Killers tricking everyone when they decided to reunite. They created a fake band, booked a fake gig, released fake music, and made fake artwork. They initially hoped for a small crowd of about 15 to 16 people, but word spread quickly, and the gig sold out. Despite the unexpected turnout, Laurence found the experience enjoyable, writing songs for a fake band and witnessing the excitement around it. Pipeman shares his own stories of bands performing under pseudonyms, like Soft White Underbelly, who turned out to be Blue Öyster Cult, and an Iron Maiden cover band that fooled the audience.
The conversation takes a turn towards the future plans of Fearless Vampire Killers. Laurence reveals that they have several records lined up for release and plan to go on tours. Additionally, he mentions his passion for writing books related to the band's music, which are set in a fictional world called Grand Domino. The first two albums were conceptually connected to these books, and Laurence is eager to release the next installment soon. Reuniting as a band has been a rejuvenating experience for them, bringing back the sense of connection and camaraderie they had growing up together in a small town.
Pipeman and Laurence discuss the evolution of their music, acknowledging that it has become less frantic compared to their early days. They allow the music to breathe more and draw inspiration from their life experiences as they have grown older. They express gratitude for the fans' unwavering support and the joy of playing old songs that resonate with the audience. The conversation ends with Lawrence sharing how fans can connect with Fearless Vampire Killers through their website and social media platforms and expressing their desire to return to the United States for future tours.

0:04 Hey, you love them too? Yes, that's sure. I'm come. I'm to see why you'll wake up America. It's time for the adventures of pipe Man on W four C why dot Com west Poon Beach is number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. Why don't live all friends? Never drinking your life? Classy won't hurt still your liar.
0:58 This is is the pipe Man here on the Advent of Payman W four C by Radio and I'm here with Lawrence Beverage from Phelans Van Bikers. Nice. Hello, here at the twentieth anniversary of Download and it's not your first time here but fourth time. Yeah, what an honor to be here for the twentieth though, right, Yeah, it's fantastic. It's been a part of like our musical life since we were kids. We always first we watched it on TV and then we got to come and play it. Massive thing. We headline of stage here one year. It was amazing. Yeah. Nice, It is a great festival, man, it's incredible. What do you think this year though? Is it? It's insane? This year it is one hundred and ten thousand people. I believe you've got Metallica twice slipknot right looking mental. Yeah, it's incredible. Bring me these bring me the Horizon, which is great because they're an actual new band, I mean in the grand scheme of things right there for generation and they're UK. So that's an incredible thing. You know, that gives gives the U okay a bit of umph again. So yeah, that's that's amazing. Yeah, So I saw something I wanted to talk about because I think it's brilliant and I have my own story ever to do with it. When you guys decided to reunate and stead sorried again, you kind of for a funny way of playing it tricked everybody. You want to tell everybody that story. Yeah, So we made a fake band, and we booked a fake gig, and we released fake
2:28 music under under under a fake name. We didn't we made fake artwork, and we thought that we tricked everyone, but they people realized pretty quick that and I think it's just because we didn't want to make it too confusing, just in case no one came. Yeah, we were hoping there would be about fifteen sixteen people, but obviously someone found out and it's spread. They just they put the dots together and then it sold out. You know, it wasn't the small gig we hoped, I'll tell you that much. But it was great. It was really fun. It was great writing songs for a fake band. Ill right, Yeah, that would be fun as an artist. Like so, I have two stories similar to that as a fan.
3:12 Yeah, So way back when I went into this local club near where I was living and there was this band playing and they were called Soft White Underbelly. Yeah you know who that is. Okay, So this particular band, that's the name they used when they first started, Okay, but most people didn't know. And I go into the show and they played Godzilla and I'm like, holy shit, it's blue Oyster Coal. Oh my fucking It was a little club and they were playing under that pseudo name. Another story like that. So there I'm in South Florida and there's there's this play place called Cheers. It's a little place they do like punk rock karaoke. They call it scaryoke. And and then so this girl's dating she was at the club at the door and she's like, oh man, there's this band cover iron Man cover band play and they're fucking brilliant. She was outside she walked in. She closed me back. It was fucking iron Maid. And yeah, man, they do that, they do that. They do that in the UK as well. They do it. They do it at a pub where they where they started and like they do. I wish we could do it more because I don't like to do that for this show, get warm up under a fake name. But yeah, that's a brilliant way to do I know, right, yeah, well you know who else does that?
4:40 That's related to download, right Metallica? Oh yeah, they'll go and they'll do like a small show in the Bay area. Yeah, like, don't tell anybody about it, and they do the same thing. Because it's great because you can really get down and dirty, you can get close to the fans, you can have a chat with everyone, like literally everyone, especially if you do a small show. Yeah, it's a really good idea and it helps you can get back in touch with the roots as well. And I love that you said that because how many bands probably wish they could go back to just playing an intimate club show, maybe not all the time, but once in a while without getting mobbed. Like you were saying, you didn't expect it to be that bit, but it would be kind of cool if like the first time I ever saw Mittauca was their first show ever?
5:27 What twenty five of us were there? Oh my god, that's incredible, right, So like it's like, I don't know, if I was the band after doing all this, it'd be like, yeah, it'd be cool to just play some club yea, just like that. Definitely, people didn't find out and they just they're just a few people that were like, oh my fucking on, I'm at Mittauco. Incredible. Yeah, it's amazing. So what you guys gonna do after download? We're releasing some music. We've got several records lined up and we'll see where it goes. We probably need to do some some tours, Like obviously, we've only done a few shows since we've been back, so we'll be doing some tours, releasing music, you know, you know, the usual stuff. Hopefully going to release some more books. I write books to do with the band, all that sort of stuff, so we'll be doing that and yeah, just you know, just love in life. Tell me more about the books because a lot of bands don't do that, and there's go hand in hands. Yeah, yeah, So I write books set in a world called Grand Domina and the first two albums were released. Our set in that World and the songs are about the books and vice versa. It's a big concept sort of thing. And so yeah, we did that, and you know, we've sold them to the fans. The fans love them, so they've been waiting quite a long time for the next book. So I'm hoping to get that out soon.
6:48 And yeah, it's you know, it's a really fun thing. Nice. And so what's the feeling like. Okay, so you're apart for a while and then you get back together. Does it feel like reach arge refresh, like the it wasn't the beginning. Definitely, yeah, especially because we grew up together in a small town in the countryside, so we've been best friends forever. So when you do split up and you spend time apart, it can be very challenging and it's so destroying really. Yeah, and then when you find when you get back together and you connect again, it's like coming back to life basically, it's incredible. And being back in this world after living out of this world is incredible. It's kind of like when you have a whole old pair of sneakers that you never want to get rid of basically, Yeah, and then you do them up a bit and you give them a spray. That's basically what it is now, and then they're still comfortable.
7:43 You don't have to literally like getting getting riding a bike again, just straight back on. Yeah. Would you say there's a difference in what you're doing now or the music you're doing now compared to before, Yes, and that it's less frantic. When we started with everything had to be at like top speed, breakneck speed, and we've calmed down a bit and we let the music breathe a bit more. And we're older, you know, we men. We were boys when we started. You know, we've lived a lot of life. We've done a lot of things, so we see life in a different way and we have more chance to actually sing about things that have impacted our lives. You know. It's cool that you mentioned that because it's so true. Like I think about their lot, like bands have been doing it for twenty thirty forty years since, and they started off as kids doing it, and a lot of fans they're all nostalgic about when they were kids and that music. But then the band's like, yeah, we sucked, you know, Yeah, yeah, it's in a way. Yeah, I mean we're quite lucky. I think our first album like we nailed it, do you know what I mean? Like nice, So I'm quite happy with that. But you do always want to release new music. But there's nothing like playing an old song. Everyone. We played in this today and like the audience was singing back every word and it was incredible. It felt it felt amazing. It's great for us too when we're hearing it. Like when System of a Down did their first showback at a festival in the States,
9:16 every single song of the whole set, the whole audience, like one hundred thousand people was singing yeah, and I felt chills. Yeah. Yeah, man, it's incredible and it feels amazing when you're having people sing back and you might not have been expecting it. So it's really good. Yeah. And the reason I asked why it is again, I mean, they're playing tonight, but Metallica I heard James saying one time, you know, like the San Jose Sharks they play Seeking Destroy at their games and he says, I don't understand why they played that version. They played the old version and my voice sucked. I didn't even know how to sing yet Yeah me, I'm gone, Man, I loved your voice back then it was raw.
10:03 That happens a lot. I think artists me to realize that just because that they might not have been happy with what they were doing, the audience was and the fans loved it, and you need to let them enjoy what they want to enjoy and give it to them sometimes, you know. Yeah, and especially the fact that listen, as an artist, you're your own worst critic. Yes, so you may think you sucked, but nobody else did. Oh yeah, I'm constantly second guessing myself and feeling down about myself. But then you go out on stage and you just let go and it becomes It's a very cathartic experience totally, and I'm sure you felt that way here at Download two. Yeah, I definitely did. Man, incredible nice.
10:45 Well how do people connect you guys? On socials and the web and most importantly by your merch because yeah, that's the only way band survived. Feeless Fan, Bike Killers, dot co dot UK, that's us. Everything's there. We're on Twitter, on YouTube, Spotify, the whole thing. So yeah, definitely, and we want to make sure when they google you, then they put band or else they'll come up with the movie. Yeah, exactly. I mean I love the film growing up. It's slightly problematic because the director he's not the best guy. But at the same time, it was a big part of my childhood. The film. I loved it and named we named ourselves after the film, so you know, you know, I don't mind. But normally when you type us, I think you get us first. Now maybe I don't know. Let's hope. So because let's hope, so I think you're better. Oh yeah, well I love that film. But yeah, there you go. Well, anything else you want to let the litteners know that we haven't covered already, that they should know that's gone on with you guys. I don't know if this is America, Yeah, it's going it's gonna be all over the world. But I am from the stage, so there'll be a lot in the steam. We'd love to come back to America. We played there, We did a tour there a while ago, so yeah, we'd love to come back. If there's any people still out there, you know, let us know and we will come back. And I'm gonna say personally, because I cover all the major festivals in the United States, and I'm just gonna say straight out that they need to put you guys on all the festivals. Cheers Man, Thank you so much, so when they listen they got here that or else I'm
12:16 not doing press for their festival anymore. You very much. Cheers Hey, thanks a lot for being here, and thanks for being on the Adventures of pike Man. Thank you so much. Man, take care. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of Pike Man. I'm w for CUI Radio.
