On this episode of The Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Mike of Disturbed. They are at Download, the 20th-anniversary festival, and discuss the honor of being part of such an iconic event. They talk about the good weather and how it adds to the enjoyment of the festival. Mike shares a story from 2003 when Disturbed performed as the openers for Metallica in Berlin and had a memorable interaction with Lars Ulrich. Pipeman reciprocates by sharing his favorite story of a Disturbed performance where David came out with a mask and defended Corey Taylor, showcasing the unity within the metal family.
They discuss the therapeutic nature of music, especially in the genres of metal and hard rock. Mike talks about their latest album, "Divisive," and how it allowed them to express their frustrations and connect with their fans on a deeper level. They touch on how the pandemic provided an opportunity for artists to step back from the constant touring cycle and focus on their creative process, resulting in some of their best work.
Pipeman asks Mike about his other passions outside of music, but Mike explains that music is such an integral part of his life that it's hard to imagine a life without it. They discuss the passionate and dedicated fanbase of metal and hard rock music and the energy they bring to shows. Mike describes the incredible experience of performing for the fans and witnessing their reactions and emotions.

0:04 Hey, you love them too? Sure, I'm for see why for you? Wake up America, It's time for the Adventures of pipe Man on W fourcy dot com. West Palm Beach is number one Internet radio station. Here's your host, the pike Man American Light US two thousand people maybe people talking with people hearing well, this is pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man W FOURCY Radio and I'm here with Mike when Grenn have disturbed Nice here at download the twentieth anniversary, Like, how does it feel to be at the twentieth or anniversary of like one of the most iconic festivals in the world.
1:15 Honored to be here, Honored to be one of the main slots playing before the Mighty Metallica. Right, We've been coming here for years as well, so to still be a part of this is an incredible thing. And one of the other things that's really fun is it's actually hot and sunny. Right. Well, a lot of the times we seem to come here, it's always like just downpouring. So this is amazing. We're gonna enjoy ourselves today. I feel right at home because I live in Florida, and today it feels like Florida it kind of does feel like a little bit of Florida. Now that's just bring it with I think I did. But I think there's a kind of a you know, both sides for you as artists, because it's like, okay, good, it's nice, it's not cold and rainy, but then you're hot as hell up on stage. I always look at ours, I'm like, oh my god, what would be like to be up there? That's okay, they'll bring it there you go. It adds to the primal nature of the whole thing. Just getting up there and just getting hot and sweaty just just makes it that much more fun. And love that attitude. That is a great attitude. Ye, So doing this a long time. If you had one story, good or bad, in your whole musical journey that you'll tell when you're like older, what would it be?
2:27 Oh man, that's oh, it's a hard question, right dropping a bomb right there? I mean there's so many, so many, you know, maybe I'll go back to say, like two thousand and three and I'll just keep in line with Metallica here. Obviously with them headlining tonight, we got to perform for the first time with them not on the festival, but we were the openers for them in Berlin, Germany, and again we're at that point, we're still a relatively new band coming over to Europe. And anyways, we're in the middle of our set and we're playing and I feel something poking me on the side of my back and I'm like, what the hell. I turn around and Lis Lars, Wow, he's behind me. He's trying to mess with me, trying to get my attention, and he's looking at me and he's going down and he's giving me the devil horns, like yeah, brother, you're killing it. And I was just like, holy shit, Like wow, okay, don't don't don't f up, don't f up right now, right, So there you go. That's pretty cool.
3:21 Now, I'm gonna give you one of my favorite stories about Disturbed, a Disturbed performance. It was at one of the DWP festivals a few years ago, the one where David came out with the mask, and he was referencing something that happened at the festival, and I'm trying to remember exactly what he said. He's like, but he's like, for those of you that think that old men shouldn't come out in masks, he said something. I forget exactly what he said, but he basically let the other artists have it. That was given shit to Corey Taylor. We do remember that. Yeah, you know, we know the slip knack guys a long time. We've been torn together for twenty plus years at this point, and you know, he felt the need to come to his defense. I loved it. It was the coolest thing ever. Just like to me, that put him on a whole other level because we should all stick together. Absolutely. This is a metal family. The hard rock heavy metal community is is not just it's not just something you put on in your car when you're driving. It's it's it's a it's a lifestyle. You The fans, they they they they don't just they're not just a fan of a song. They're a fan of their band, and they don't just like like the band. They love their band and they embrace him, and like you said, we all become part of this big family together, and so yeah, it was that was kind of
4:55 sticking up for a family member. Yeah, right. And and one of the best things about the music that we all love and that we get to play is it brings us all together. Absolutely it's all about unity. And one of the best things you love about the shows in itself and especially tonight, is it's going to be the biggest therapy session and we've all attended. Absolutely, that's one hundred percent. To me, music is the best therapy for you, the artists, for me, the listener, and especially in metal and hard rock. Absolutely couldn't say any better myself. So tell us about the new album, Divisive Yes, came out end of the year last year. Happy to be out doing the full tour for this thing finally, and we're really proud of it. It was great, you know, after the pandemic took basically two years out of everybody's lives. Yeah, it felt great to get back doing what we love, creating, writing things that were aggressive, and you know, we were we were pent up, We had a lot to say, We had a lot to be frustrated about, as everybody else did too, So it was it was very cathartic to be able to, you know, put that down on the record and now to be out supporting it. Now do you think I've always been saying recently that if you're going to take one positive of the pandemic is that it gave artists like you a chance to jump off the hamster wheel and kind of see where you want your music to go, get that creative juices flowing against stop by stop by stop and like recording an album like on the tour of us or whatever, and you know, and it gave you a chance to like really create
6:29 some of the best music ever. Do you think that's what happened with Divisive? I absolutely think so for sure, one hundred percent. You know, when when any of us, whether it's artists or anybody, live in a normal life doing their day job, you're, like you said, when you're stuck on that hamster wheel, you become either complacent you also say it, or stuff. You know, you're you just get stuck in a run. So, you know, everybody had an opportunity, whether they wanted it or not, to sort of look at themselves, look at their lives and see if they were happy. So when when everything kind of opened up, not a lot of people went back to what they used to do. Yeah, you know, I think they said, you know, what, life is worth more than this, and people found other ways of you know, making a means and just becoming happy. And for us, though, it's it's kind of funny because it's a little bit of a double edged sword because when we're on that machine, that hamster wheel, and we're going for a year straight of touring, we're you know, we're a little bit beaten, a little exhausted, and we can't wait to get home. But then when you get home, we can't wait to get back out on the road. At the same time, totally to have it taken away from us where we had no say so that that felt like we didn't we didn't know if it was going to come back, let alone when so yeah, when it finally opened up, it was like okay, like bust the door open and let's go.
7:47 I love it. And speaking of which, okay, so did you then or any time if music wasn't an option? Do you know what other paths you have? Oh? Man, I get this question a few times and it's it's still always is a tough one to answer because it isn't just something I do, isn't just something I used to pay my bills and raise my kids and whatnot. It's my entire life. Like it's such, it's part of who I am. Started out as a huge fan, like everybody else and then got to do this for a living. It's I don't know. I mean, I have other interests outside of the band, but when when this part of my life is not existent or isn't active, I feel like there's a big part of me, like there's a big hole inside of me. So I don't know that I could really answer that that that's actually a great answer, because it's like my youngest story. I've broughted a couple of festivals with me and I do all like the DWP festivals and Europe UK, all over the United States, and she's like after the first day, half day, she's like dead, I don't know how you do this every single weekend, Like I'm already like done, and I'm like, I don't know how. I wouldn't, right, it's I know, it's it's it's kind of weird. Maybe maybe it's hard for some people to understand. But yeah, I don't know. It's a lifestyle, you know, and you have to have the passion for it. I think hard rock metal, more than any other genre, has the serious passion for it. I couldn't agree
9:18 more. There's something about high rock and heavy metal fans. Again, it's it's a different level. You know, I'm not insulting any other genre, pop or whatever, but it does. They're generally like fans of like the song because they're hearing on the radio or stream it or whatever. There's there's I mean, obviously there's exceptions, but like the fan base, the passion and the energy that heavy metal and hard rock fans bring. I mean, that's what I'm waiting for tonight and see their energy. Nothing's more amazing than being up on deck and playing these songs that we wrote for ourselves but also for the fans too, and seeing them their every reactions and their emotion and singing, singing the lyrics. It's just it's like the most addictive drug ever.
10:03 It's it's better than any drug. It's better than sex. It's better than anything I've ever experienced in my life. And so when that's not a part of my life, I don't know, I don't know. Well, no better words could be said than when you guys say my disturbed family because my brothers, my sisters, my blood. Yeah, it's because they run through our veins exactly. And that's not being cliche, it's it's being truthful. It is what it is like, That's the way I always look at is when I'm at these festivals or as show or wherever I'm at, I'm with my family absolutely, and with you here playing here, I'll be out there with my family, with my brothers and I thank you for being here at Download Festival and thanks for being on the Adventures of pipe Man. Thanks for having me. Hey, what's up. This is Mike Wenger from Disturbed and you're listening to pipe Man on W four sea Way Radio. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of Pintman.
