On this episode of The Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Josh from Dark Below! Pipeman and Josh discuss the band’s new music, Josh’s journey as a singer – despite his initial reluctance and the influence of musicians like James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine, who also resisted singing initially, had on the band.

Josh shares how he primarily identifies as a guitarist and talks about the challenges of playing intricate guitar riffs while singing, with admiration for musicians like Chevelle's vocalist, who can flawlessly perform without looking at their instruments.

Josh gives us an insight into his song writing process and shares how he is influenced by his childhood spent alone, relying on his vivid imagination. Josh states that the song "Make Believe" reflects on the captivating and sometimes troublesome aspects of imagination and is inspired by personal experiences.

Make sure to check out the band’s social media @DarkBelowOfficial for some awesome merch and information about upcoming tours and new music!

0:04 Hey, you love them too? Sure? Why you wake up America? It's time for the Adventures of pipe Man on w forcy dot com West pom Beats, his number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the pipe Man Watch. So what's up to this? Is pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man WS four C y rate and I'm here with our next guests.

1:00 As some badass new music, You're definitely gonna want to check it out. So let's welcome to the show. Josh from Dark Below, how are you? Hey? Man? Hey, I'm doing great, man, Thanks for having me. Hey, my pleasure. And I just want to say, right off the bat, you know, while I was listening to your new music and they knew the fact that originally you didn't you didn't really want to sing, right yeah, And I'm thinking, man, I had some pretty good freaking singing for somebody that didn't want to sing. Oh, man, I appreciate it. But yeah, I've always thought of myself as more of a guitar player. And when we started the band and we were, you know, just searching for people, it was just our original drummer and yeah, I just wanted to play guitar, but we could not find a singer, and it finally got to the point where the other two were just like, dude, you're gonna have to do it or I don't think we're we're going to get to play the show. So I started doing it.

1:59 I mean, now I enjoy it, but yeah, at first it was like damn it. Yeah, you know you're in good company because both James Hatfield and Dave Mustain did not want to sing. And really, yeah, so Dave really didn't want to sing because he was, you know, again the great guitarist, you know. And then he basically and now did I tell you this? Somebody told me this, and that I tell you this. Next time you hear one of their songs, you'll hear it. The person that he talked to and told them that he didn't he didn't want to sing because he didn't know how just told him just to talk. And now if you listen, I'll Megadeth song. Now it sounds it does sound like he's just talking. Yeah, I can I can hear. I'm not that familiar with Megadeth, I know, like a couple of the bigger songs, but I can hear that one in my head right now. The Donna and I can hear him like talks in the verses. Yeah, exactly. And then Hatfield was like really shy, like they used to complain that he wouldn't talk to when he was back in the day in the beginning, and that he wouldn't talk, he wouldn't come at hiding and stuff like that. And you know, now look at him. Yeah, he's up there owning it now. No, I'd never actually heard that about either of those guys.

3:21 Our drummer told me that the guy who sings for Fallout Boy wasn't their singer either. He was the drummer, what he told me. And look at Dave Grohl because he was the drummer for Nirvana. Yeah, yeah, right, man, I guess so, I guess there is some pretty good company out there. Yeah, maybe you're in good company. Like maybe some of the best singers are the ones that never wanted to sing to begin with. Oh, man, well, I certainly hope. So, So what I want to ask you too, is okay, singing and playing guitar at the same time, it's like kind of rubbing your head and your tummy at the same time. Man, I don't know that that was something that it always came pretty naturally naturally to me, even though you know, I didn't sing.

4:11 I don't know if it was just like maybe I was singing in my head or something when I played. I don't know that was something that was just I kind of picked up pretty easily. But I mean, there are definitely still some limits that you know that I have that Like it's it's tough to play some stuff when you're singing. It's because like like our song Hapi and Hugh in the last single, it's really hard for me to play that that like verse verse verse riff while I sing. But there's you know, like Chevelle as a band, I've seen where he does that, and that dude's just insane and he'll play everything and he'll like never even look down at his guitar. So it's crazy. It's so funny that you mentioned Chevelle because I was watching the video for Make Believe and you specifically but just in general too, it reminded me of Chevelle. Oh wow, well, I'd love to hear that too, because I love Chavelle. Really. I think Chavelle is the band that made me want to start a band because I was in college. I was a freshman and one night, just out of the blue, my buddy who also played guitars, like, hey, dude, let's go to a concert, Like, well, who is it? It's a Chevelle, and like at that point, i'd heard the Red and I knew some of their bigger hits, but you know, I was like, all right, yeah, we'll go check them out. And man, they were so badass, and just being there and being part of that and seeing those guys, that was what made me think, like, man, I need to try this because it's it's not completely unattainable. I just gotta I gotta find some other people. So they definitely had a big impact on meeting starting

5:44 a band. We'll see look at that. And I didn't even have any clue that they were a big influence for you, but I just as soon as the video came on, it was just like it was almost like a deja vu of in at a Chevelle show. Wow, well, dude, you couldn't pay me a bigger compliment. That's so thank you. Hey, you're welcome, And so tell us about the song make Believe, because I liked a story about that song because I can totally relate to it as well. Yeah, so I would say that I've always had a pretty vivid imagination. It might be because I'm an only child. So when I was a kid, I spent a lot of time alone, and you know, sometimes you just have to use your imagination. So that was something that I did a lot, you know, when I got older and started thinking about that kind of stuff, you know, I realized that you're as great as your imagination can be, as far as you know, these great ideas or you know, stories you create in your mind that can become something. At the same time, your imagination can also get you in trouble, which is something I've definitely experienced. I know. You know, my dad passed away several years ago, and accident. It was, you know, just something that all of a sudden, your life changes. For me, I just went through, you know, a really difficult time and where my imagination got away with me. You know that that song, you know, it kind of it hits on that just the power of your imagination, not only in a

7:16 positive way, but can also be in a negative way. Yeah, no doubt about it. And I think you I think that's what writing the song is anyway, It's the power of your imagination. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, man, And that song was was one that it came together, It came together quickly, and it's it's one that I don't know, not all of them are like that. Some of them are like pulling teeth to write a song and you're you know, it's hard, it really takes a lot of work. But that was a song that just it really felt like it came together and you know, writing it as well, the lyrics, you know, they came together because it is it's something I'm pretty i think intimately familiar with, so it was it was just easy to write about. That's usually the better song anyway, when you just like, I think the best artists write songs for themselves and then other people relate to them, but their purpose of writing it wasn't for people to relate. Yeah, yeah, I absolutely agree with you. You know, there's sometimes where you write a song and you are you are trying to fit kind of a square peg into a round hole or something because you're saying, you know, all right, I want to write a song about this, but you know, it's just not coming naturally to you. But when it's a you know, a real experience, something that comes from you. It a lot of times does turn out better. Yeah, absolutely, And so tell everybody how they can reach out to you guys on socials on the web, how they can check out all your music, merch and then tour dates even because we're going let's talk about
