On this episode of The Adventures of Pipeman, we’re joined by special guest Chris from Black Stone Cherry. Chris discusses the band's latest release “Smile, World” and how the song perfectly contrasted the rest of Screamin' At The Sky, the new album’s heavier aesthetic. Pipeman and Chris discuss bringing happiness into the world and how the polarization of opinions and division has led to more hate. The pair speak about the importance of lyricism and how music can be therapeutic for not only the listener but the artist too. Pipeman and Chris get nostalgic about the simplicity and quality of sound from cassettes and vinyls, and how music distribution has changed over the years. You can find upcoming tour dates, merch, and info on new releases at the band's website @ BlackStoneCherry.com! 0:04 Hey, you live on too, that's sure, I'm on for se Wow, wake up America, It's time for the Adventures of pipe Man on W four cydi com West pom Beats is number one Internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. Now, this is pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man w f C Y Radio. And I'm here with our next guests, who actually is gonna be playing a couple of festivals on the Pipe Man Radio Tour coming up. So let's welcome to the show. Chris.

00 I'm Blackstone Cherry. How are you doing good? Man? How are you doing doing good? Looking forward to I think it's next weekend Rock Oklahoma. Okay, it's will be awesome. Man, it's always a good time out there. I love that. I love that festival. But yeah, I saw it. Somebody texted being or like you realize it's gonna be like one hundred and ten degrees here. I'm like, well, oh, well it's worth it. Yeah, it's Rocklahoma. It's gonna be here. If it's not over a hundred, there's probably something wrong. Exactly. Well, I live in Florida, So I said to this person specifically, I'm like, that doesn't scare me right, so, and then you guys will also be at blue Ridge Rock Festival, which I'll be at as well. So that's a pretty cool festival to play at too. How a, Yeah, we're looking forward to the festival, Surgeon. It's been a minute since we've got to do it, you know, and it's full entirety, so we're pumps.

04 I love it and I love the new music. In fact, today you guys just released on your Instagram one song Smile World, and that's a badass song and I love the Instagram post, thank you, thanks well you uh. That song is is a lot of fun. It's kind of like our our one fun song on the record. You know. This record is a little heavier, tackles a lot of serious subjects, lead clean and stuff like that, but it's kind of our unless you have a little bit of fun song for the album. Yeah, and you know what I dig about it, you know, forget what the meaning of the lyrics is to you.

46 But the minute I see the title of that song, the first thing I think of is yes please, because everybody's frowning and like the whole world needs to just start smiling. Dude. It wouldn't it be a better place. And I swear there's been times I've just smiled at random people and they looked at me so weird, and I'm like, right, accomplished what I needed to do, right awkward for them. Well, I'll tell you a few months ago, during the off season, I was in Bali for two months, and that's exactly what those people were like. Like, every person I passed by would smile and say hello to you, and I was like, Man, if the whole world were just like this, it would be so cool, right, dude, I have to agree that friendliness goes such a long way, exactly. And you know, we don't have to all be the same, We just have to all be humans in each other.

44 Yeah, the world would be so boring if we were all the same and we all believed and thought the same way, then there would be no great discussion anymore. Man Like. The problem is is we've got to a point where if we don't agree with each other, we think we have to hate each other. And that's just say, but not the case, man Like. I have so many fraends and I disagree with them on so many things, but we're still great fraens, you know. Like the division that's that's happening. Is is truly said. It's the oldest trick in the book, and I don't know why we're falling for it. Divide and conquer. Like to me, they're all on the same team and it ain't mine, meaning the people trying to divide us exactly. And you know, it's funny what you have said, like there's a lot of people you disagree with, but they're still your friends. That's the way it should be. I think that's how we learn from each other. And listen, I was telling somebody recently.

44 They were talking about you know, somebody else and what they believed. I'm like, listen, you don't know what they went through in their life, where they grew up, how they grew up, what their influences were, what their environment was like to make them believe the way they do. Just because they don't believe the same way YouTube doesn't make them wrong or less educated or more or anything like that just means they live a different life than you. Yeah, and there's something you can learn from that person. I guarantee you, whether it be what to do or whatnot to do, you can learn something diff from everybody. That's right, and That's why I love about music, because music is the ultimate unifier, the ultimate therapy, and the ultimate in you know, learning other people's points of view, which is what's cool. That's why I said what I did about this song is like, it doesn't matter what the song means to the lyricists. What matters is is that everybody puts their own meaning to it, and it has meaning exactly.

47 I had someone asking an interview not even fifteen minutes together. They said, what can people expect from the record? And I said, I rather let people listen to it and make it up for themselves. You know that music is it's awesome jective. You know, I know what it means to me, But like you said, what how do we know what it means? That to the person listening it can mean something totally different to them. They girls said it you can sing a song to one hundred thousand people and they'll sing it back to you for a hundred thousand gets for reasons. That's so. That's so true. And when you're an artist like him or like you that realizes that, that's when you start writing great songs because basically you write the songs for yourself. But then you allow anybody else to put their own meaning to it. That's up to them. Yep. A ARTI is open to interpretation absolutely, and good art everybody doesn't interpret it differently. And speaking of art, I love, love, love the artwork on the album cover. And I'm big about that because I'm old school where you know, I like, you know, having an album cover, an albummart and man, I used to buy my albums by looking right, because that's how I always bought my albums, was looking at the album like, oh, that's a cool album, and I have no clue what the music sound like.

13 And this album when I look at your album cover, I'm like, yeah, I would buy that album. I wouldn't even have to listen exactly what we want right, you know. And I love that might be going back that way like vinyls more in style and stuff like that, because some of these kids, I think they're missing out on what the whole vibe of music album is. Oh, I agree. What what I'm starting to love is that Walmart's you know, because where we live, Walmarts, you're we're most shopping used to do in Walmart Target. But both of those stories are starting when you go in the shop now you're seeing more vinyl in stocks and CDs, and I think that's so cool. That is way cool because there's a lot of places where they don't have any music in Walmart or Target. I remember I remember being a kid and buying albums in J. C. Penny Right. You would never think of that today. If you told somebody that today, they're like, are you not? They don't sell albums. But it is coming back that way. I love too how there's you know, there's bands out there playing out cassettes too, And I know it was because of the vinyl shortage, but it's still kind of cool, you know that to me, Like, I'll take all of those stuff, school man, because I remember going to the store and buying the stead singles and and CD singles and stuff like that as the kids, and you valued the music so

45 much more than too, I think, you know, like yeah, like I was saying, you didn't listen to albums, So if you bought an album, you were not going to waste your money. You were going to listen to that album. You weren't gonna like flip through the tracks. Oh yeah, now you listen to the whole thing starting to finish you know now it's I mean, it's a double edged sword really because it's so nice to be able to think of something and find it and listen to it. But at the same time, it's like, you know, you can stream something and listen to it in your car, but if you put the CD in, the quality of the audio is so much better that it's just ridiculous.

28 Yeah, but cars don't have cars now, I don't even have CD players, So how how you can listen to CD? I know, right, I listen. I had a car with an eight track player that I used to play Blizzard of Oz on eight track. That's why I'm talking about right, And you know it is it is kind of cool because it was all home experience, like and there's certain music. I can't tell you something. You gotta laugh because most people would number say this. I remember the first time I got the album Black and Back in Black, and I was a Bond Scott fan, so of course, you know, being the gatekeeper at that age of my life, you know, I was like, oh, this stuff sucks, you know, the new AC DC. But I just I spend money on that album. So I listened to it over and over and over again, and I fell in love with it like after like the third time. Right, God with a record? Right? Remember my dad gave me that when I first started learning to play guitar. Give me a model copy. Nice. Well, that Angus is definitely a good I's one of the greatest ever do in my opinion, and sung heroes of rock and roll guitar. He was amazing, amazing, you know, Like it's funny because you say that, because I think of when I was a kid too, and you know, when you started to play guitar, learn to play guitar, it was always based on some album or some song, and that

01 was what you want to learn first and foremost. And I think back in Black that album turned a lot of people into guitarists. Oh yeah, I mean looks as big as an impact as Eddie van Halen had, you know, I think Angus Young had a massive impact as well. Maybe not as big as as Eddie, but Angus for me, it's one of those guys like you can sing all of his solos, you know what I mean to it? Yeah, I don't know. There's something to be said for his style of guitar playing, and he's one of the greatest ever ever placed six strings in my opinions, Well, yeah, I have to agree, and I have to say too that everybody's got to check out Screaming at the Sky went Drops in September because this whole album is one of those albums where I think people need to listen to the whole album. Thank you, sir.

54 I appreciate that. You know, we put a lot of time and entered into it and and really make sure these songs mean something too. Is I hope people really really truly enjoy the record. And I always ask, like ours have been around as long as you have, does it like get harder and harder and long take longer to write a great album like this, Like because I always think about man, sometimes you could just run have things to say, but then you can't. I think, if anything, you start cutting the sad a little more, you know, if that makes sense? That does you start and knowing quicker what's going to be a great idea and what's not, you know, so you kind of stand the herd before you ever get started a little bit. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense because I think about it, like when you're young, first starting out, you don't really have much materials, so you don't throw any of it away for sure, and it's almost like you you like feel this sense of you know, connection one hundred percent to every little new thing that you create.

05 And I think as you get to be a more experienced musician, you do exactly what you're saying. You kind of you kind of realize what really is good and you kind of realize how you can, you know, trim away some of the stuff that you know, maybe it's okay, but it's not album ready, right, And dude, that's I think that's the mark of always growing as a band. Exactly. Part of that is is learning what parts of what you do are the things that that drive you the most and the people that like your band the most. When you start to focus on those things musically, then you want to make sure that you know, then the lyrics have to stand up to that music. You know, the melodies have to stand up to all of it. And it's I don't know, it's you know, and sometimes it'll it'll be a process where it takes it's a little bit longer to do certain things. But like there's one song called Here's the Hope that's on the record that we had the music for that song for probably four to six months before we ever wrote lyrics for it, because it just had to be the right kind of thing that inspired the lyric.

18 Yeah, because it's got a match, right, It's got to go together. Oh yeah, So how does everybody you know connect to you guys on socials on the web, get the new music, get your old music, buy merch check your tiar dates out all that great stuff.
