On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Dan from the band Caucus. They discuss their experience playing at Hell Fest last year, where they were scheduled at the same time as Metallica. Despite being a huge Metallica fan, Pipeman stayed for Caucus's set before heading to Metallica's performance. Dan appreciates Pipeman's support, as he was one of the few who stayed for their set.
Pipeman shares his experience trying to navigate through the massive crowd at HellFest to reach Metallica's performance. He recounts the challenges he faced and the unfriendly attitudes of some concert-goers. They discuss the overwhelming number of people and the difficulty of moving through the crowd. Pipeman reveals his trick of finding openings on the sides to make his way to the front of the stage.
They then move on to talk about their performance at Download Festival, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Dan reflects on the honor of being handpicked for such a significant milestone. As an English person, he considers Download Festival a prestigious event and mentions having played there multiple times in the past. They also discuss the weather conditions at festivals, with Pipeman expressing his dislike for rain and mud, while Dan shares his perspective from the stage.
Pipeman and Dan discuss the crowd's energy and compare the current experience to their previous performance at Download Festival. They highlight the improvement in the crowd's enthusiasm and the favorable weather conditions during their set. They also touch on the phenomenon of people leaving early during headline performances, which they both find puzzling.
Looking ahead, Dan talks about Caucus's upcoming schedule, including their recent UK tour and their plans for European festivals. He mentions their excitement about having a couple of weeks off before hitting the road again. Pipeman jokingly mentions the post-festival depression that often follows such breaks. They conclude by discussing the unique camaraderie among festival-goers and the sense of belonging within the metal community.

0:00 Hey, you love them too, that's sure. I'm four C WOW for you. Wake Up America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipeman on W four C why dot Com. West Palm Beach is number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the White Man. This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man W four C Y Radio and I'm here with Dan from Caucus. Nice. So I'm gonna start off right off the bat to tell you something that I told Claire earlier. Okay, okay, So I did coverage of hell Fest last year. Yeah, and uh, you guys were playing at the same time as Metallica. Yea, And I was like, what the fuck that's uncool, But I and listen. I went to Metallica's first show ever. Wow. So I'm a huge Metallica fan. I
1:34 stayed for your set first, and I went to set after you were done, one of the few people that right, but it was badass. Oh thanks, thank you. But I've never seen you at festival before then, so I was like, fuck it, I've seen Metallica. We love them, but they do play a lot, I know, right, But then after your set, I didn't expect what was going to happen next. I'm old school, so I can get through any fucking crowd. Okay, the other night Metallica played, I was in here until like five minutes before they went on. So I walked out and you can imagine I'm a very back and I worked my way all the way up to the pit. Okay, hell Fest was fucking hell to do that. I mean, I left your set. I had a hard time actually just even getting out of yea.
2:29 Yeah. And then I'm trying to get through to get to Metallica, and like my friends from Season of the Missay, we're up by Merchant, They're like, come on up here. I'm like, okay, I'm gonna try to work my way up there, fucking and people were dicks, like last night, bring me a rising. All I do is walk through I'm going a pit and people are like, they're just putting her arm out, go ahead, welcome. Yeah. I tried doing that at Metallica hell Fest and they're like, Wow, you're not fucking going anyway. Wow that sucks. I'm like, yeah, I'm a little more old school than that. That's not gonna So I did make it up. But yeah, and that's the most people I've ever seen, I think for a show like as we were kind of there's like a kind of um there was a catering area that looked out over the whole right and that's where we watched and as far as you could look, dude, it was and they were just sardy, insane and nobody would move, like unreal. Every festival I do, I teach this trick to like people I'm with. They don't realize, what, come on, we're gonna go up front. I'm not going to that crowd. I'm like, you don't have to. You just go down the side. There's always an opening on the side. There wasn't even an opening on the side.
3:42 That was like unbelievable. It literally, I think after your set took me like a half an hour to get up to merch where where my friends were. And I was like, fuck me, I'm not what am I gating old? I've never had this problem game through a crowd. But it was worth it. It was wild, it was guys killed it, so it's worth it. It was we were kind of, you know, we didn't know what we knew. Obviously, we were starting at the same time as Metallica, and we didn't know if if there's gonna be anybody there. There was some people. Obviously it wasn't packed, but it was. It was cool, but we could see at the end of the tent there was just crowds of people that were looking like the other way to us, that looks same. We were like, oh great, I know if I were you and I knew that, like, well, fuck my life, you know it. At least we got to play helpst You know that we watched Metallica most of the sets. We get done playing, and then exactly fears and watched Metallica, you know, first of all problems. I guess I know, right, So how about here at download? How does it feel like twentieth anniversary? Yeah? And I've been saying this all day, all weekend actually, like I'm thinking myself, whoever makes line up for a twentieth anniversary hand picks? Yeah. So it's not like, oh, we'll just throw anybody on it. Yeah, So I had to feel to be like one hundred ones to be picked. Yeah, it's kind of God when you put it like that. I hadn't really thought about that, if I'm honest, But yeah, that's that's true, and it's kind of. It's one of those places as a as an English person, you know, Donnington is
5:16 you know, just it's the race. So it's kind of and I've been lucky enough with previous bands. I've played here about five, five or six times. But yeah, the twentieth anniversary thing is it's very very cool and it's yeah, it's it's always stressful, as I'm sure you can imagine, because you know, there's never any space or time or it's just go, go, go, go go, But today especially it was kind of We played here in two thousand and fourteen, I think twenty fifteen and that was that, Yeah, that I think it was raining and it was I heard it's rain like every year or couple of years. Pretty lucky, yeah exactly. I mean yeah, if you haven't been download in the rain, then you're very very right. I think it rained a little last year. But now as bad as people yeah, um but yeah, the back the sun's out and for some reason the set went really well. The crowd enjoyed it.
6:03 We played pretty good, so you know, I can't complain. It was it was very very cool. So how would you say the crowd was now compared to last time? Oh, ten times, ten times better because again, last time, it was just pissing down with rain. Everyone was in there like you know, punchos with and you know, no one wanted to move, which is like I wouldn't move, But I get it, I get it. But it was a bit kind of great. You know, all of our gear was getting wet. We were just getting hit in the face with rain, and we're just like, you know, so it couldn't have gone better today, especially compared to that, really, And I know that feeling because I'm the tape listen. I go first of all, where whether I'm working or not, I'm there first. Thing. I hate people that like I want to see the bands in the beginning because they could beat the future headline. Yeah, totally how it works a lot of the time. Yeah. And then I hate fucking people that leave during the headliner.
6:57 I gotta beat the traffic, yeah, fuck it. You know what I do? Yeah, I go to that tent over there and wait for everybody to leave. That's the other option, right, you know in my car. Yeah, and then when I go out, I just drive out. No big But why would you miss the headline or why would That's the whole point or they leave, like when encore is about that. Yeah, hello, you can realize the encore is usually the best, that's the best. Yeah, that's why everyone's waiting for Yeah exactly. I don't get it, Like, why why even be here? Yeah exactly, I know what you mean. He's a sensible people. I'm telling you I'm obviously not very sensible because I do the same ship and then just you know exactly, but the rain, I don't take that shit, Like I don't even dig the mud shit like a lot of people get into it. Yeah, but I'm thinking I'm gonna be in the pit and I'm gonna go fucking flying. That's that's what's gonna happen in budded Rain. Yeah exactly. I have my footing.
7:57 It's not fun. It's not fun, And like I mean, Jen really now, I'm lucky because I get to play the festivals as opposed to go to them and sometimes, like we've let not just download a lot of the European festivals too. When it's raining, you just see the people and you're like, I didn't even know why you're here. I wouldn't be here because it's looks like from the stage, all these idiots like falling all over the place and like a dog or something. You know, let's just rolled around. But it's cool. You know they're up for it, and they paid the money. I guess they want to make the most of it, and they want to make the most exactly exactly, which is color. So we got going out, how are you going to top this? What's going on after this? Well? This is that we just did. What do we do? We did two weeks around the UK. We did fifteen shows back to back, no day off, so we're all dead. This was the last show. Um. It was great because we did like we did really small clubs, which is kind of you know, most people play the academies in the normal venues, which is great, but we wanted to do like we played small towns that no one really goes to, only little clubs, which was was really good fun. But with the heat we did, we underestimated how hot all these shows were going to be, like a little four hundred capacity venues like sold out. Oh so that was that was It was fun, but it was hot, and then we end we end on this one and then we got two weeks at home. I think three weeks at home and then we do fifteen twenty European festivals, um, and then that's it for the year. So far. Stuff always comes up. So yeah, yeah, someone will get booked. I'm sure, but yeah,
9:28 So it's so right now we're all like, yes, we get to go home for a couple of weeks. Nice, Yeah, which is cool. And then you'll get home and you'll get the depression, you know that, Wesson exactly, Like a couple of days. Yeah, the first couple of days. I usually when I get home, I don't leave my house at all for at least three days. Same same sleep, eat terrible food, watch TV exactly, ignore all text messages and emails, does not exist exactly exactly. Then after that it's like, when's the next terrible? And I don't know what it is. I don't know what it is, but yeah, it's that kind of like you've got that period where normal life is good and then you're like, that's good, it's about time to go again, you know. I hope it's because my youngest story ship I'll bring her some times of festivals and that halfway into the first day she's like, Dad, I don't know how you do this. Every weekend I'm done, and I'm like, I don't know how I don't first of all. Second of all, it's like I tell her, I'm like, because all my friends are out on the road. Yeah, like like minded people that kind of stuff exactly. People outside our community don't get that. Yeah, it's true, And I think I think you have to. I don't know what the what the kind of um you know what the qualifications are, but I feel like you have to be made for it kind of mentally, physically, everything.
10:52 You have to. If you don't enjoy it, it's not for you, you know what I mean. Well, especially when it comes to metal goods. Like I have a brother, yeah, and we'll talk and about women and I'm like, I need a woman that's into metal, And he's like, that's ridiculous. Why is it? Why is that important? And like, oh, good luck at your age finding somebody that's into metal. I'm like, first of all, you'd be surprised. Yeah number two, Yeah, you don't get it because there's this commonality that is instant. Yeah. Yeah, and the things you talk about, like when I'm with a woman that's into metal, like we could talk for hours, Yeah, just about music. I guess yeah. And then if it's somebody that's not into metal, it's like they want to turn down your stereo in the car, or they want to want to listen to the stuff you want to talk about the festival, and they're like, I don't want to talk about it, you know. And then it's like, well, fuck me, Like why am I with this person? Right? Yeah? No, I know you mean.
11:54 And it's it's like a I don't know. It's like a little tribe, isn't it. It's kind of everybody kind of understands and you know what it's like to be in the tribe kind of thing. Yet I even see it in press rooms. Okay, so I can always tell the press people that are not metal heads, they're just there because of the you know, and they got the fucking script. Yeah, okay, same question. And then I watched the artists, and I can tell that they want to just like kill themselves, you know, because metal people like they want to know that, you know that. Yeah, Like I like to tell stories because then the bands know, oh yeah, yeah, you knowing exactly, And we all have these stories too that the common people don't have. Yeah, exactly. There's one thing because we did this in twenty fifteen. I think it was we we did this tour with Slayer in the US like a support and that was, you know, the best thing ever for all of us.
12:50 And we were talking with Kerry and I can't remember who, I think Gary too, and they were talking about all the bands, you know, that they loved and you know, the all bands, and me and Bill are guitar player. We were saying, that's something really special in metal is that every band, no matter how big they are, they're all fans of somebody. Like yes, there's there's that lineage of like, you know, they they were inspired by one metal band, and then they inspired new metal band, and that new metal band inspired another metal But then it's like a cycle, isn't it. So it's kind of and that's why it's so great. I don't know if you get that in the pop world so much or the you know, I don't know, I don't know that world. But it's a real kind of you know, everybody's got respect for each other and they're kind of Now now you'll see you prompted a story because first of all, okay, some Motilica played. I was at their first gig ever.
13:37 But I was at first gig wow, and I used to Now I'm a little pissed at myself because I didn't know. So we used to hang out back in the day because and especially I hung out with Lombardo. Yeah, you know, back in my opinion, fucking greatest drummer ever. Like, if you go on my Facebook today, you'll see I said that. And I found out after the fact they fucking was playing here because I'm stuck in this Presston and I missed it. Yeah, I'm like, what the fuck. I got to see him last year though, at riot Fest playing in the original Misfits. Oh yeah, that's right. That's pretty special, isn't it. See him in riot Fest this year playing with mister Bungle. That's sick man, right, sick Yeah, Like how many bands does he play in? It's like unbelievable. But I think, you know, he's what I mean, I love He's. Like one of the reasons I got into metal drumming is because of him. But it's like, I guess, like a lot of people, but yeah, I think I feel like he's one of those guys that's kind of never satisfied, Like he's just he's always going to keep going like he was in Slayer. Dude, he could do he could do nothing forever, and it's fine, you know, but he wants to keep keep playing anyone. I remember where he started the whole double bass thing exactly exactly. Yeah, God, will you listen to that? Yeah?
14:58 I know exactly. I remember. I think the first album My Head shows my age, but it was seasoned in the abyss, and I just remember I can't remember the song it was, but I remember thinking, I'm never ever going to be able to play like this, you know, and then I just no, I will, I'm gonna do this, and then you know, I mean, I still can't play like him, but you know, I can. You know what to your point from before, Okay, a nerd thing in metal and talking about the respect is I could sit Aaron say to you how I think he's the best fucking drummer ever and you're not insulted now you're saying it too far from it, you know? Yeah? Absolutely absolutely? And uh so yeah, I mean, but I also found out something new, Like all these years I've been a Slayer fan, I found out something new, like literally two days ago that Tom didn't even listen to metal before he got into slay really, yeah, I didn't know that. I saw a video of him talking. It was him, it wasn't Rumor. Yeah he said yeah when they approached me. I never even heard metal before. I never listened an Iron manager. Pretty so let's sen stuff like the animals. Wow, that's amazing. The most iconic essentially yea voice and metal. Yeah yeah, I didn't even know what metal. Right, I'm like scratching my head, like how did that happen? And that voice come from? That? Like you would never think of some many into animals that would be gone. Just yeah, that's amazing. I didn't realize
16:32 that. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So for those that don't know, how do people connect you on you guys on social media, on the web, and most importantly by your merch? Okay, well, as far as I know, we don't have a website because our guys are like, well, actually I guess websites are kind of old school, but the two main guys are bad. They're super old school. They just kind of you know, we do social media, but not really you know, but it's we're very like that. The band's got a name, so you know, people still give a shit, but you know, right, so I think that Instagram is at Carcas band. Facebook is Carca's band official. We have shirts within Pericon. I don't know if you know the merch company called in Pericon, So just go on there site and you know, check that out.
17:17 Other than that, I think that's pretty much it. Really. I don't think we're on Twitter or anything like that. It's kind of you know, Twitter sucks. We're doing the basic that's that's necessary. So a nerd day, it's cool about metal people on metal bands, back to your day of bands respect. You're sitting there wearing a Municipal waist shirt dah, and how many metal bands like get up on stage yeah and wear other band shirts. Yeah. I saw an air in view with Jury Only and he was talking about Cliff Burton. It was like the biggest supporter ever of our bands. Yeah, and like I just think that's cool that all supporting. Yeah. Absolutely, And it's like, well, I've been a fan of Municipal ways for a long time, but we just went on tour with them in the US a few weeks ago. We did like five weeks throughout the US, and now I can call them friends, you know, and it's kind of like this, So it's like a whole extra level of you know, being a fan because now I'm like, oh, I love them, and they're also my friends, you know. So it's kind of and that's how it works a lot of the time. You know, you meet these bands you're a fan of, and then they turned out to be cool people because they're in the metal tribe, you know, and all that stuff, and then then they're your friends and they're one of your favorite bands. So it's kind of, you know, it's perfect. It's really really cool. It's a great community. It really is. Man. I'm glad you guys are part of it. I'm glad you're part of the twin Aunt anniversary down Yeah crazy and hey, man, thanks for being on the Adventures pipe Man. Thank you very much. Man, thanks for having me. Hey, what's going on?
