PipemanRadio Interviews Carbonstone at Inkcarceration 2025

We are at Shawshank Prison aka Ohio State Reformatory for the 2025 Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival. Carbonstone is playing and came backstage in the Press / Artist Lounge to talk with Pipeman Radio of W4CY Radio about what it is like to perform at such an iconic location where Shawshank Redemption was filmed. This closed down prison is known to be haunted so when you go to Blood Prison who knows what will happen.

0:04 Hey, you lunto, Yes, that's true. For see Wow Crazy. Young Incarceration, America's Rock, Metal and Tattoo Festival. This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man W four c Y Radio, and I'm here. With Corey James of Carbon Stone. Nice here at Incarceration. Yeah, interests is this fucking amazing or what is amazing? Man? The people here have been fucking absolutely awesome? Can I curse? You could do whatever the fuck you want? I fucking love it. Yeah. So everyone's been fucking amazing. A whole lot of love here man, and we're blessed to be here.

0:45 So have you checked out the prison yet? We have not checked out the prison. We have not had a chance yet. We did some photos in front of it, but that's been it so far. Nice. Yeah. The first year I did this in twenty eighteen, it was early in the morning, I'm taking pictures of prison. Some other band member Whens taking pictures. He's like, hey, you take my picture, I'll take yours. Look at us. We're fanboying out on Shawn Shake prison. Hell yeah baby, right, So tell our listeners who have never heard your music before, how you would describe your music Besides, it's absolutely fucking brutal. Oh man, a blessed. It's like heavy industrial new metal if Nine Inch Nails and Corn and Orgy had a baby. I guess Lincoln parkas.

1:26 I don't know, that's a great description some weird elements, man, But a lot of people say what we have now is unique, and that's really important to me because we're not trying to copycat anything. Well. See, that's why I love when you started talking about the different genres, because no, I sayn't ask what genre are? I hate that fucking shit. Yeah, And nowadays it's like I find a lot of metal bands are specific in their genre. They use like it it's an algebraic equation to write their music right, and they do all sound same like I remember in the eighties, the older people will be like, oh, all that stuff sounds in the same, but it did it, but now sometimes it does. So I love bands like you that mix up different genres so you can have that uniqueness and stand out exactly.

2:09 And you won't stand out if you don't do something like that. No, And it means you're a true musician in my opinion, because if you're plugging in a formula to me, you're not a musician. A musician to me, experiments and tries to figure out different sounds and how they want, how what they would love. Yep, my dad did that to me. Like when I was playing guitars the teams, are you better stopped doing that? You suck? And what I really was just doing was like seeing what sounds I can make out of it. You're experimenting. Yeah, that's the key, And that's the key. And again, if you're in a band and you genre label the shit out of yourself, you put yourself in a box. And if you put yourself in a box, your career is gonna fall flat real fucking quick.

2:50 No doubt. And artists shouldn't be a box setting. Way, No, no box, no box, you know. And Alie from bringing in a ride So you said it best when he was getting a lie heat for chin jump to music, He's like, why do I want to write the same song all the time over and over? Yeah? You don't want to. You don't want to. That's a very good subject right there. So what was that first moment in life that you knew this was what you had to do? What happened? I grew up a military brat, and my family was constantly traveling, and I'm constantly having a move, and not anytime I made a friend, I had to say buy forever and go somewhere else. Yeah. On all those road trips, my mom was always blasting the cassette tapes for the Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge specifically, which is one of my all time favorite fucking albums.

3:33 So that's where I fell in love with rock music. And then as I reached my early teens, I found the band Corn and that band really made me kind of go, holy fuck, I want to do music. I want to do what they're doing, to be up down stage in front of all these people. And I gotta give it to Corn man. They did it for me as a kid. Nice. And you know what I love about Porn is even if you don't really like their music, if you go to their live show, you. Will, Oh, yes, you will. They're phenomenal. I do all these festivals all the time, and I'll see like the same bands like ten times a year. I will never miss Corn playing. That's right, Like, that's what's take. Every time they play, I gotta be at that set. They are two hundred percent every show and they leave it all on the fucking stage, man, And it's incredible.

4:16 Oh. I remember when we were first coming out of COVID. The second show I went to the Duke coverage was corn and he Jonathan had COVID and he literally sat on the throne like Ozzie just did and still did the shove. And still did it. God blessed, still fucking did the shove. That's true musicianship right there, no doubt. God, that's Jonathan Davis. Man. So what else he got going on after inc So. We're playing a really big festival in Wisconsin next month called Northwood's Rock Rally, will be with Earshot, Royal Bliss, Escape the Fate, and a bunch of other bands. And then in September, for the entire month of September, we'll be going on tour with our friends in Spine Shank, The Union Underground and Julian Ka, which are half the guys from the band Orgy that's.

5:03 A killer lionel like the Union Underground, they're friends of mine. Then yeah, man, that's that line up there. That's a killer fucking tour. Gonna be amazing, full East Coast tour. So if you're from the East coast, please come. Out and see us. Nice nice, So what story good or bad in your whole musical journey would you share when you're like eighty. Okay, so good er, I'll share it now I'm forty. There you go. So we hired a roady years ago to come out and do gear tech for us for one of these big ass shows you played at a venue. Called a rams Head Live in Baltimore. And I didn't know the guy. The bass player allegedly knew him, and so we hire this guy. He shows up right before we get on stage. He's supposed to handle all this tech work for us, and he's nowhere to be found.

5:49 So I'm pissed off. Immediately we play our set, we haul all around gear, which he was hired to haul all our gear for us. I go outside to smoke a cigarette and I look down to the right and he's got his pants down and he's got his ass leaning up against. The back of the wall, and I'm like, what the fuck is this guy doing? So I walk over to the dude and it's not a wall, it's a glass elevator and there's a bunch of teenage females in the other room, all screaming in horror at this guy's ass. I don't remember his name. We fired him immediately and this but it's the story has stuck with me my entire life. Wow, that's like traumatic. That's I feel very bad for all those ladies.

6:30 Oh my god. You know that's something like that's gonna haunt you for the rest of your life. Yes, it is, Yes, it is. So what tell everybody how they reach out to you on socials on the web, most importantly by your merch because they can't listen to my show unless they buy your merch Yes, they don't realize that's the only way you get to the next gig. That's it. So yeah, merchandise is everything. Carbonstone dot net is our website and you can find our mercealing right at the very top. We have all kinds of. Cool shit and obviously we're going on tour, so every little bit helps us. Yeah, but you can find us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and I'm personally very active on all of our socials, So if you comment on shit, I will respond to you directly.

7:13 And that's that's how we're supposed to roll. Man. I love it, and so do you have a TikTok that you are embarrassed about? Embarrassed about? Yeah, not yet. I'm sure what's gonna happen right right? So fuck anything else you want to share with the lizards that we haven't covered already, that you have coming up, or anything you want them to know, just fall. Us on socials. We post their daily. We got Northwoods rockbrally next month in August in Wisconsin, and then we have the full tour in September East Coast with Spineshank You and Underground and Julian Kay. So you'll be seeing and hearing about a lot of us so and that's awesome. So we love every single one of you guys. Well we love you. And you play with your wife too, right, how's that you like playing with your wife?

7:56 Is that cool as hell? Or it's amazing? And so my wife actually is as of her own band called Anoxia what I play guitar in and we all dress up like undead kind of spiritual animals in her band. Oh that's very theatrical band. So make sure you check out the band Anoxia as well. There's two bands out there named Anoxia. Unfortunately, we're going the legal route with that, but our Anoxia band. Is with a female vocalist there, Like I always think that's cool because, like, what better way to be married but to be able to go on tour together, play together, you got it, and express your passion together. You know, you got it. You got it. And she'll be coming on tour with us in September, So there you go. It's gonna be a good time.

8:40 Man. Well she keeps me in check. Well that's needed too, right, Yeah. Well man, I'm so happy you're here at INK and I look forward to seeing a lot more of you. And thanks for being on the Adventures of Pipe Man. Hell yeah, I appreciate you, brother man. Thank you, you got it. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of Pipe Man on W four c u I Radio. Yah
