Augurium Album Title: Unearthly Will
Release Date: August 25, 2023

“Unearthly Will” is a fresh take on what Canadian death metal has to offer.

Phantom Parallax – This is a very rhythm-based song that calls back to the intro chord numerous times, we find this song also has the heaviest breakdown on the album. Straight-up filth. Musically – Lyrically – Meditations on the possible connection between the living and the dead, and possession.

Pipeman in the...

0:00 Hey, you love them too, that's sure. I'm come from for c Why Why Coup of America. It's time for the Adventures of Pipe Man on w forcy dot com. Westpoon beats his number one internet radio station. Here's your host, the white Man god By. This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe Man w corc Y Radio. And I'm here with our next guests. Who has some killer new music we're going to talk about.

1:00 So let's welcome to the show. CJ from Augirium. How are you. Oh, I'm good man. How are you uh doing great? You know, uh just got back last night from the Bring Me to Rise and show, so uh yeah, yeah, we uh. You know, I go on tour and I do radio coverage for festivals. So last month I was doing coverage at Download and of course they headlined there and now I'm at home on a little a little break, so they actually came there touring with full out Boy and they came here to where my studio is, so you know, I went there to cover the show at home for a change. Awesome, So tell us about you guys. Let's start there before the new music.

1:53 Let's you know, for our listeners have never heard your music. Tell us a little bit about the story about your band and the music and how it's developed to what this new music is. Okay, Well, Augurium actually started when I was fresh out of high school, just about I think we're about eight years ago now, and there's a there's a vast difference between that air of Argurium and now. So initially it was just us wanting to be as brutal and nasty as possible, but we didn't really know how to do that, so we just we just ran with it. We jumped into a cheap studio and recortion it something for like four hundred bucks. And there's been a few different lineups since, so the sound is definitely progressed. But initially it was just a really old school sounding, greasy death metal band, and over the years we've refined and refined, and with this new lineup, I feel like we've peaked and reached the maturity in the exact kind of can death beat symphonics sound we've been looking for for almost ten years. Nice well, and that's kind of normal. I think listeners don't realize that, like you kind of a grow up, be learn your instrument, see learn better songwriting, get better production, get advice from people outside of the inner circle.

3:23 And you know, sometimes like tell me, if ain't fans that go your shows now are NATO's fans are like they just want to hear like the original music. Well, unfortunately, I think for our upcoming tour, we're actually only playing the new record. I'm hoping we don't disappoint the old fans just because there is a few staples off our last album that everyone's like, play desire for Infield's play blah blah blah blah blah blah. I think they're going to enjoy it as much shift not more. At least that's what our piece. Oh, I think they will too, because here's the thing. If you take the bass foundation of what you were and then add all those things onto it I was talking about, then you just come up with, well, yeah, the music similar, but it's just much better exactly, It's more refined. It's you know, it's kind of funny. Like one thing that I always think about recently is like Metallica and James always talks about the old days and not in a good way and not being bad against about the band or anything about his own voice and It's like, Yeah, I don't even understand why people like that. I didn't even know what I was doing.

4:46 You're you're young, right, You've got spunk and energy and fire within you. It doesn't matter if you don't know what you're doing. If you're enjoying it, people are enjoying it. You're doing something right. That's right. And listen, you know what, when we do something for a while, let's hope that we get better and learn more. Right, that would be terrible if you're just as good as the day you started. Yeah, exactly. If there's no progression, what are you doing? Exactly? So tell us a little bit more about the album coming out. It's Unearthly Will coming out and dropping on August twenty fifth, and tell us a little bit about and why people should pick up the album. So I guess a bit of a backstory. So Augurium did disband for a while. We just kind of hit a peek and there was a lot of bad mental health involved.

5:40 We kind of just didn't do anything for a while, and then me and the guitar player Logan, we actually started jamming again. You're like, you know what, man, I miss Augurium? Do you miss Augurium. Hell yeah, so we kind of in secret, we're writing what became this album over the course of two years, and it's like almost impossible to find drummers and just like you know, competent, solid musicians at least where I'm from, So we unfortunately had to outsource and get a bunch of musicians that are approximately I think seventeen to twenty hours away for months. So the general writing process was all remotely done, so a thousand skype calls, video calls, messenger remote sessions and refer trying to place drums or change this note, change that note. Essentially over the last two years, it's been a cultivation of grinding, grinding, grinding, and wondering if this is ever going to get done. And here we are. So it's a lot of blood, sweat and tears and a lot of doubts if we'd ever get to this point.

6:53 But after two years, here we are, and I'm listening to you about like the skype calls and stuff like that. Sometimes I feel bad for artists nowadays, but also good in the same token, because it's like you can be far away from each other and get it done. And then on the other hand, there's the part of you're far away from each other and you're not in the same room together. It must be kind of a weird, good bad trip for an artist. Yeah, yeah, exactly. It's it's not easy any means, but we did it. There you go. And then so for everybody's showing up to your shows that you know they're looking for the old school, then they might want to try out the song and the first song you guys wrote, Reforming, because it kind of complies and combines the new school and the old school, doesn't it. Yeah, exactly, absolutely it does. I'm gonna let I'm gonna take a shot here at pronouncing the song name too, because we were talking about this before the show.

7:56 Maybe the difference between somebody being from Canada or America says it differently. So I'm gonna say if I was American, which I am, I would read that and I would say Sanguin. Yeah, I honestly, I just call it Penguin. So it's from my understanding, it's san Guin. My vocalist loves to come up with weird and elaborate titles, so mistake me if I'm wrong. I'm pre sure it's sing Gwin well there you go. See you know what, See, I picked the right one to say that because you're not even sure. Yeah, I love it. And so what about the I think this is the latest single, Phantom Parallax. That is a badass song. Oh thanks, man, I appreciate it. So tell us about that one, because I think that one probably is one of the most music musical and lyrical, like you know, combinations of everything all in one.

9:07 Yeah. That that that song. Oh I love it, but I also have a it's like a love hate because we worked that song so many times over the last couple of years. So lyrically, I can't speak a ton about it just because that's uh, that's my vocalist is domain. But musically it's like a whirlwinds Like you got the symphonic backings. It gets really dark but melodic at the same time, there's nasty riffs in there. It just gets down right nasty at the end. In my opinion, I think it's one of our peak songs off the record. Nice. I think it is too. I think it is too And you know what else too I want to talk about. So tell me about the Jeopardy theme. Oh god, Oh I didn't realize that was we were. Sorry, my laughter is a little out Um, we were. I believe it was you of our festival in Edmonton. And this is the advice for anyone hitting the road, either you're just beginning our pro bring guitar strings and do a set up before a festival slot. That's all I got to say. Essentially, we were.

10:28 I think it was three or four songs into the set, and then my I think it was my hight e string. It's snapped, so I've got it was a Floyd Rose Dean razorback seven string guitar at the time, and the stage was dark, so I'm blindly running into my guitar case to grab a string. So not only did I have to re string of Floyd on stage while the sound engineers playing the Jeopardy theme for five minutes, it also wasn't the right string. Oh so it was pretty brutal man and I played the rest of the set with the wrong string tune to the best of my abilities. I don't think anyone noticed, but I sure noticed. I doubt any by noticed, and I'm sure you did. That's the thing too, like, I'm glad you brought that up, because how many times are people at a gig and the band screws up. Nobody knows, but the band totally knows no exactly it sucks. Well. You know I was talking about that with somebody just the other day where a band was playing at the Grammys.

11:41 Yeah, and there was a guest that was singing with the band. The guests Mike was working fine, but the lead singers Mike was not working. Oh no. But you know he played it off and shared the other Mike. Yeah, and he was not a happy camper after the after the set out. But if if that wasn't in the news or nobody told me, I would have never known. It sounded good to me, exactly, And that's that's the biggest thing. Like if if things are gonna happen, things are gonna go wrong, Like it's life, right. You can't be perfect. You can plan for it for seven months, but something can happen.

12:26 If you can play it off and keep it rolling, you'll be fine. Exactly. Isn't that the rule when when you're a musician that just just keep going like yeah, don't don't make a deal about it, don't point it out, just keep going, move on. Yeah, exactly, exactly, I think I think my biggest thing for this upcoming to her, just because it has been so long, is to not fall off the stage while headbanging. That would be a good move. I could definitely clean it as my own and say I'm pulling the CJ. But let's let's try to not do that. Yeah, So funny story. I was at festival a few years back and body Count was playing and Vincent Price, the guitarist, jumps off the stage and he broke his leg jumping off, but then he continued playing and finished the show lying on the ground. That finally security brought over a chair and he just sat there in the photo pit playing, right.

13:28 See that that's metal to me, that's metal right now, you know, so so hey, you know, I hate to say, but keep hand banging and falling off to st yeah exactly exactly. Uh, but that just shows how into it you're you are, which is what I love. You know, I can't stand if a band's up there and you can totally tell when they're going through the motions, but when you totally into it, like you just go nuts and you don't even know what's going on. Really mostly exactly exactly if you can radiate and feel the energy from the band when they're playing I I eat it up. Yeah. Absolutely. So let's tell everybody how they reach out to you guys on the web, on socials, how they pre save, pre buy, buy and get the new album, buy your merge, check out tour dates, all that great stuff. So our our direct hub for the most part is Facebook. Um, it's I believe it's Facebook dot com slash augurium skum. And then we have our Instagram, and then we have a band camp where the album is actually up for pre order right now, and if you happen to go over there, any pre order you actually get I believe both singles that are current released for free right now. Nice. Yeah, that's right now. That's the general hub.

15:01 We are going to be setting up a web store for after the tour, and we're gonna have a bunch of taste merch on there. Very cool. Any final words you want to leave our listeners with that we haven't covered. Um No, I think I think I'm golden there. I just appreciate the chance to talk and tell some funny stories and hopefully I don't sound too Canadian. You know, it wasn't too much. I didn't. But I don't think I had to get you to say about too many times that I didn't say times that that's the one that Americans always talk about. And then you know, I have some Canadian friends and some of them are like, we don't say a boot, what are you talking about. I don't. I think that's Eastern Canada and new Foundland and stuff, right, I guess because it's funny we out even on TV shows like they do it on TV shows.

15:56 Yeah, exactly, Like I'm purpose like it's in the script. So somebody's gonna set these that these American writers straight. Yeah, exactly. All right, Well, badass new music. I love it. Everybody's got to check it out and check out your tour dates catch a live show. Thanks for giving us great music, and thanks for being on the Adventures of Pike Man. Awesome. Thanks to the opportunity man. I appreciate it very much. You got it. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of Pipe Man on W four CUI Radio.
