So I'm in a Reddit group and somebody asked the question, why aren't more people listening to my show?
Dave JacksonWell, let's talk about some of the possibilities.
Podcast ConsultantWelcome to youo Podcast Consultant.

Podcast ConsultantNow he wants to work with you.
Podcast ConsultantHe's your podcast consultant, Dave Jackson.
Dave Jackson70% of podcasts are discovered via word of mouth.
Dave JacksonThat's per Jacobs Media.
Dave JacksonAnd if you think about it, what was the last thing that you recommended to someone?
Dave JacksonDoesn't matter what it is.
Dave JacksonCould be a restaurant, could be a movie.
Dave JacksonCould be.
Dave JacksonI'll give you an example.
Dave JacksonThere's a guy on Netflix right now called Anthony Jeselnik, and he is some of the darkest humor I've ever heard.
Dave JacksonMy brother loves that stuff.
Dave JacksonSo I told my brother, you gotta watch this guy.
Dave JacksonI have another friend that is a Christian.
Dave JacksonI saw the Jamie Foxx special on Netflix where he's talking about how he had a stroke and he gets very spiritual in a way.
Dave JacksonI recommended that to my friend because I think he would like it.
Dave JacksonSo as much as people go, there's no discoverability in podcasting.
Dave JacksonWe need artificial intelligence.
Dave JacksonWe need an algorithm.
Dave JacksonThere's already one in place.
Dave JacksonIt's not artificial intelligence.
Dave JacksonIt's actual intelligence.
Dave JacksonAnd the algorithm is your friends.
Dave JacksonAnd when they know what you like, they should be recommending things that you would like.
Dave JacksonAnd so on Reddit, somebody put, why don't more people listen to my podcast?
Dave JacksonI've been producing a regular unsigned music podcast since 2008 featuring unsigned music.
Dave JacksonI generally get around 50 listens per episode.
Dave JacksonIs it the subject matter?
Dave JacksonIs it me?
Dave JacksonAnd so the first thing, if someone is unsigned, I don't care.
Dave JacksonYes.
Dave JacksonThe beauty of it being unsigned is you can play it on your podcast.
Dave JacksonBut if one week you're playing polka and the next week you're playing death metal, that's not going to work.
Dave JacksonYou need to pick a genre.
Dave JacksonAnd so one of the things, as I mentioned, when people talk about your show, what do they say?
Dave JacksonDo they say, hey, Jill, man, you have to listen to this show.
Dave JacksonThe artwork is amazing.
Dave JacksonHey, Jill, you have to listen to this show.
Dave JacksonThe guy has a black microphone.
Dave JacksonHey, Jill, you gotta listen to the show.
Dave JacksonThey are using whatever captivate for a media host.
Dave JacksonNo, they talk about your content.
Dave JacksonSo without hearing this person show, is it your content?
Dave JacksonMy guess is probably it almost always is.
Dave JacksonNot that it's awful, but it's not good enough to inspire people to tell a friend.
Dave JacksonAnd are you asking your audience to share it with a friend?
Dave JacksonThat is more likely the issue.
Dave JacksonI used to listen to a radio station, and this was like two years ago, and I do not ever listen to the radio.
Dave JacksonIt's awful.
Dave JacksonI live in Akron, Ohio, which is near Cleveland, and all the stations play the exact same music, except on Saturdays they had Kenny the Kid, and this guy played a mix of hard rock with kind of a wink to classic rock.
Dave JacksonBut the beautiful thing was he would take these bands that were big in the 80s and play their new stuff.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, they have new stuff.
Dave JacksonAnd his knowledge of that genre was amazing, to the point that I would set an alarm on Saturday to listen to the radio.
Dave JacksonThat's insane.
Dave JacksonAnd of course, he was so good, they fired him because it's radio and he's now trying to do it on his own.
Dave JacksonI think he's using Live365.
Dave JacksonBut nonetheless, it was different.
Dave JacksonIt was information and I couldn't get anyplace else, and it really scratched an itch.
Dave JacksonI was like, oh, man, I've never heard.
Dave JacksonThere's a really.
Dave JacksonI guess if you're into the band Rainbow, one of their top songs is called Stargazer.
Dave JacksonI had never heard of it.
Dave JacksonIt's amazing.
Dave JacksonWow.
Dave JacksonSo that's the kind of stuff.
Dave JacksonAre you inspiring people to tell your friends some other things when you look at your episode titles, is it more than just the artist name?
Dave JacksonAnd I mean, think about it.
Dave JacksonIf I'm just going to make up a name, right?
Dave JacksonIf it just says Jamie Evans.
Dave JacksonYeah, I don't know who Jamie is, and the title should make me want to click.
Dave JacksonSo if you're playing their music or if you're just playing their music or something, but get something there to where you want to click it.
Dave JacksonAnd when people say consistency.
Dave JacksonYeah, it's absolutely important that you are consistent in schedule but also consistent in content.
Dave JacksonSo if one week all you played was polka, okay, that's consistent.
Dave JacksonBut the next week I tune in, I'm expecting polka, and you're playing country or swing or whatever.
Dave JacksonYeah, it's got to be consistent.
Dave JacksonNow, there are those people that love all types of music, but you just have to know that going in.
Dave JacksonAlso, do you have a website and.
Dave JacksonYes, you need a website.
Dave JacksonYou know, take your show notes and use them as a blog post.
Dave JacksonAnd then put a player from your media host.
Dave JacksonHopefully not Spotify, but okay.
Dave JacksonAnd have links on your website to follow the show.
Dave JacksonYou don't want to do this whole, hey, find me wherever you find your podcast.
Dave JacksonNo.
Dave JacksonWhat?
Dave JacksonWhy is your podcast lost?
Dave JacksonWhy do people have to find it?
Dave JacksonIt's not lost.
Dave JacksonSend them to your website to reinforce your brand, and you know it's on your website.
Dave JacksonThere's no searching required.
Dave JacksonAnd then he said he had 50 downloads an episode.
Dave JacksonWell, if you divide that by 20, that's two and a half rooms.
Dave JacksonThere's two and a half classrooms.
Dave JacksonMy background's in teaching, and that's half a hallway.
Dave JacksonAnd those people could be watching Hallmark movies, they could be playing Xbox, listening to satellite, reading a book.
Dave JacksonYou know, all this stuff.
Dave JacksonBut instead they're listening to your show.
Dave JacksonSo I know it's only 50.
Dave JacksonMm, let's remove that only word.
Dave JacksonYou got 50 people that have a lot of options, and they chose you because there is no spam in podcasting.
Dave JacksonIf I don't want to listen to your show, a few clicks and I'm unsubscribed, and there is nothing you can do about that.
Dave JacksonSo why are more people not listening to your show?
Dave JacksonOften you ask your friends, your family, your mom, and they tell you it's great.
Dave JacksonAnd I understand why they love you and they don't want to tell you that it's not that great.
Dave JacksonSo what you need to do is find some people that are your target audience.
Dave JacksonAnd if you say my show is for everyone, well, that's a problem right there.
Dave JacksonBut find some people who will listen to your show and tell you the truth.
Dave JacksonI offer this service for the record, but that's not why I'm talking about this.
Dave JacksonLinks in the show notes, but more often, it's the content.
Dave JacksonIt's not you, it's the content.
Dave JacksonMaybe you're starting off the show with a bunch of chit chat.
Dave JacksonWe can work on that.
Dave JacksonBecause if you've already published episodes, you have what many people don't have, which is your need to serve your audience is greater than your fear of sounding silly.
Dave JacksonAnd I can work with that.
Dave JacksonThat's a beautiful thing right there.
Dave JacksonIf you need help, go over to schoolofpodcasting.com start.
Dave JacksonLet's get going today, because that's what I do.
Dave JacksonI'm Dave Jackson.
Dave JacksonI've been doing this almost 20 years.
Dave JacksonI will celebrate 20 years in podcasting in 2025, and I can't wait to see what we're going to do together.
