Is Audio on YouTube Worth It? Here’s My Take
Should you put your audio podcast on YouTube? The answer, as Dave Jackson explains, is a resounding yes if you’re not currently utilizing the platform. With YouTube being the second largest search engine, it offers a valuable opportunity for podcasters to expand their audience without any significant investment of time or resources. Even if you have an audio podcast, uploading it to YouTube can lead to greater visibility and potential growth, thanks to the YouTube algorithm's recommendation engine. However, if you already have a YouTube channel with video content, it's best to create a separate channel for your audio podcast to keep your content organized and to accurately assess its performance. Join Dave as he shares insights on maximizing your podcast's reach and the importance of adapting to new platforms.
Takeaways:
- Putting your audio podcast on YouTube can increase your visibility and audience reach.
- It's important to separate your audio podcast content from any existing video content on YouTube.
- Using your RSS feed to create a YouTube channel takes only about five minutes.
- YouTube is a powerful search engine that can help people discover your podcast.
- The YouTube algorithm can boost your content, but it can also be unpredictable.
- Creating a second channel for your audio podcast allows for better analytics and audience tracking.

Dave JacksonSo should you put your audio podcast on YouTube and say it with me?
Dave JacksonIt's the beginning of every podcast answer.
Dave JacksonAnd that is, of course, it depends.
Dave JacksonSo the first thing is, what are you currently doing on YouTube?
Dave JacksonAnd if your answer is nothing, I don't have anything on YouTube, then your answer is, yeah, you probably should now.
Dave JacksonWhy?
Dave JacksonWell, number one, it's free.
Dave JacksonNumber two, takes about, I don't know, five minutes.
Dave JacksonAll you need is your RSS feed.
Dave JacksonAnd then the third one is the almighty YouTube algorithm.
Dave JacksonAnd what that means is they have a thing, it's a recommendation engine.
Dave JacksonAnd the beauty of it is if you get noticed by it, it can make you more popular on YouTube than you are now.
Dave JacksonThe bad news about it is that thing can take you and lift you up and then smash you to pieces.
Dave JacksonYou know, YouTube giveth and YouTube taketh away.
Dave JacksonBut it's better than nothing.
Dave JacksonAnd what I hear a lot is, oh, I have an audio podcast.
Dave JacksonI'm going to start this YouTube channel with an audio podcast to grow the audio podcast to which I then go, what are you going to do then?
Dave JacksonTo grow the YouTube channel, which is supposed to grow your audio channel.
Dave JacksonAnd it's again, better than nothing.
Dave JacksonYouTube is the second largest search engine and in the number one search engine, you know, Google, a lot of those results are from YouTube.
Dave JacksonSo it is a way to be found.
Dave JacksonThat's the good news.
Dave JacksonThe somewhat not so great news is when you go into YouTube stats and YouTube stats are amazing because they can show you exactly where people came from, how many people are subscribed, how many people are following you.
Dave JacksonAnd the best one is how far are people listening.
Dave JacksonAnd that particular YouTube stat is soul crushing.
Dave JacksonIt really is.
Dave JacksonIt's.
Dave JacksonWhy?
Dave JacksonWhy is that, Dave?
Dave JacksonBecause people go to YouTube to watch things.
Dave JacksonAnd depending on the audience, most people, when they click on a video and they get your static image, are going to go, oh, this isn't what I thought it was.
Dave JacksonAnd they will leave.
Dave JacksonNow there are people that will just go, oh, never mind, and just put your phone or their phone in their pocket and just listen to your show.
Dave JacksonBut that is not the majority.
Dave JacksonBut you just got somebody to listen to your podcast who wasn't before.
Dave JacksonSo you are growing your audience in a way that didn't cost you any money.
Dave JacksonIt cost you about five minutes.
Dave JacksonAnd your chances of being found are now better than they were before.
Dave JacksonNow, if you have an actual YouTube channel with actual videos, should you do this?
Dave JacksonNot on your current channel.
Dave JacksonDon't mix videos with what we will just call static videos.
Dave JacksonSome people call them fake videos, but that sounds kind of judgmental, don't you think?
Dave JacksonBut I would start a second channel so that when somebody goes, oh, I love this channel, and they click on the next thing and they're like, oh, that last one was video.
Dave JacksonThis one's just static.
Dave JacksonKeep them separate and that way you can really see the stats on this channel that is just static and get the idea of how well is this working.
Dave JacksonAnd again, you just set it up once.
Dave JacksonThat's it.
Dave JacksonSo if you're not doing anything on YouTube, take the 5, 10 minutes and take your RSS feed added into YouTube and then you can go in if you want to and make a playlist based on that RSS feed and check the box that says it's a podcast.
Dave JacksonAnd in the land of YouTube, that's all you have to do is check a box.
Dave JacksonNow, in this thing I call, I don't know, reality, that's not a podcast.
Dave JacksonYou're a YouTuber.
Dave JacksonThere's a lot of arguments about this and let's not waste our time on that.
Dave JacksonBut technically that's not a podcast, it's a YouTube podcast.
Dave JacksonWe talked about that before.
Dave JacksonBut if you're not doing anything and you got five minutes, it's not gonna hurt you.
Dave JacksonI would definitely do that.
