Forget the Critics: Love Your Podcast Voice
Navigating the complexities of podcasting can be challenging, especially when faced with self-doubt and external criticism. In a recent discussion, the importance of authenticity in voice and presentation was emphasized, particularly in response to a query from Lisa McLean regarding complaints about her voice as a female Australian podcaster. The host, Dave Jackson, passionately argues against the idea of cloning one’s voice, suggesting that embracing one’s unique identity is far more valuable. He highlights that attempting to mimic someone else or change one’s natural voice can lead to a lack of authenticity, which ultimately hinders the podcasting journey. Instead, he champions the idea that podcasters should focus on being themselves, as this will resonate more with their true audience.
Dave elaborates on the notion of target audiences, explaining that not everyone will appreciate every voice or style. He uses relatable examples, like food preferences, to illustrate that personal taste varies widely. Just as some people love Brussels sprouts while others detest them, the same applies to podcasting. It's crucial for podcasters to appreciate that while some listeners may critique their voice, there are plenty more who will appreciate their authenticity and message. This perspective encourages podcasters to cultivate confidence, channel their energy into creating content that reflects who they are, and ultimately ignore naysayers. The episode concludes with an invitation for listeners to seek guidance in their podcasting endeavors, reinforcing the idea that support is available for those willing to embrace their true selves.
Takeaways:
- Trying to be someone you're not makes podcasting harder than it already is.
- Your voice is fine, so focus on your strengths instead of worrying about complaints.
- Not everyone will like your podcast, and that's completely okay and normal.
- Embrace your uniqueness and be yourself; there's no one else like you.
- If someone dislikes your voice, remember they are not your target audience.
- Focusing on the people who love your content will boost your confidence and creativity.

Podcast ConsultantDave Jackson.
Dave JacksonI was on Facebook, in a Facebook group, and I've said in the past there are good things about Facebook groups, but many times you get really, and I mean really bad advice over there.
Dave JacksonBut Lisa McLean reached out and said, as a female australian, I have received complaints regarding my voice.
Dave JacksonI'm interested in exploring the option of cloning it, modifying it for use as a narrator.
Dave JacksonHowever, I'm uncertain about the more the moral however, I'm uncertain about the moral implications of such an action.
Dave JacksonThoughts?
Dave JacksonAnd so, if she's talking about being a podcaster, then the first thing I want to say here is be yourself and embrace yourself.
Dave JacksonBut that means that some people aren't going to like it.
Dave JacksonBut you know who's really going to like it?
Dave JacksonAustralians.
Dave JacksonBecause they sound, or you sound just like they do.
Dave JacksonAnd there's a name for people that complain about your voice, and it's called not your target audience, because if you try to be something you're not, it makes podcasting harder, and it's already hard enough.
Dave JacksonAnd you're not going to be as good about it because you're going to be constantly worrying about your voice.
Dave JacksonYour voice is fine.
Dave JacksonAnd here's how I know.
Dave JacksonHave you ever been on the phone and you're talking to somebody, you're having a good time and you're laughing, and they just stop and go, ugh.
Dave JacksonAnd hang up because they can't take your voice.
Dave JacksonI think the answer for most people is no, it's never happened.
Dave JacksonI've been.
Dave JacksonI've been hung up on before, but it wasn't a nice conversation we were having.
Dave JacksonOkay, well, if that's the case, your voice is fine.
Dave JacksonNow, the only other thing that someone might complain about is if you weren't using proper mic techniques.
Dave JacksonSo if I push my microphone away and I talk louder, can you hear how I kind of like you can still hear me?
Dave JacksonI'm just as loud, but I sound like I'm in a fishbowl.
Dave JacksonWell, don't do that.
Dave JacksonPut the mic about three fingers width away from your mouth, talk across it and you'll be fine.
Dave JacksonDon't use a blue yeti.
Dave JacksonNothing wrong with a microphone, but 98% of people that use it use it wrong.
Dave JacksonBut the bottom line that I wanted to stress in this is just be yourself.
Dave JacksonBecause, a, you're really good at it.
Dave JacksonNobody can be you like you, so just be yourself.
Dave JacksonAnd you gotta be okay that not everybody's gonna like it, and that's okay.
Dave JacksonThink of a food right.
Dave JacksonThink of a food that you don't like.
Dave JacksonBut I bet.
Dave JacksonLet's go.
Dave JacksonBrussels sprouts.
Dave JacksonNot everybody likes Brussels sprouts.
Dave JacksonI didn't think I liked Brussels sprouts until somebody cooked them a different way.
Dave JacksonBut nonetheless, my sister, I'll give you an example.
Dave JacksonMy sister does not like Kielbasa, which is basically sausage.
Dave JacksonDon't know why everybody else eats it.
Dave JacksonEverybody else thinks it's wonderful.
Dave JacksonNot my sister.
Dave JacksonAnd they're going to be some people that just don't like it.
Dave JacksonNow, my sister trying to think of something she eats that I wouldn't.
Dave JacksonAnd there's probably some food that my sister eats that I never would because we're all different.
Dave JacksonAnd you just have to be okay with the fact that not everybody is going to love your show.
Dave JacksonAnd if they say it's because of your voice, that's fine.
Dave JacksonIt's fine.
Dave JacksonBecause there are plenty other people who don't have a problem with your voice.
Dave JacksonDon't focus on the one person that, for whatever reason, doesn't particularly care for your voice.
Dave JacksonFocus on the others who love your voice, love your content, and love your personality.
Dave JacksonFocus on them.
Dave JacksonForget the other people.
Dave JacksonBecause again, if you try to be somebody you're not, it's hard.
Dave JacksonI know once I did a podcast as a character, a grumpy old man, and I would talk like this and it would ra already my voice hurts.
Dave JacksonAnd so by the end of it, I would end up falling out of character.
Dave JacksonBecause being somebody you're not is not easy.
Dave JacksonJust be yourself and you will be fine.
Dave JacksonNow, if you need help with this, you want me to listen to something, then by all means, you know where to find me.

Dave JacksonGreg is a little older than I am.
Dave JacksonGreg had zero computer training growing up.
Dave JacksonHe's a little on the, you know, he is a seasoned middle aged person and doesn't really have much computer skills enough to send email and things like that.
Dave JacksonAnd I've been working with Greg almost, I would say, every other day, just walking him through file management, which really doesn't have anything to do with podcasting, but yet it does.
Dave JacksonBecause if you don't have file management, oh, are you going to hate yourself?
Dave JacksonSo I'm helping him avoid those pitfalls.
Dave JacksonAnd then we got him into recording, and then we got him into exporting an mp3 file, and then we got him into uploading it to captivate, and then we just baby stepped it through, and he's like, all right, well, can I.
Dave JacksonWe signed up today.
Dave JacksonCan I do another one on Wednesday?
Dave JacksonYeah, can I do another one on Friday?
Dave JacksonHey, if it's available, take it.
Dave JacksonThat's what unlimited means.
Dave JacksonAnd people go, well, how can you do that?
Dave JacksonIt's not going to scale.
Dave JacksonWell, eventually, and it's already happened with the last meeting I just had with Craig.
Dave JacksonHe's publishing an episode now.
Dave JacksonHe is a podcaster.
Dave JacksonAnd so Craig will not really need me as much as he normally did, and then somebody new will show up.
