Today on episode number 954 of the School of Podcasting.
Dave JacksonI am back after spending a week in Amesbury, New Hampshire, at ecamm creator Camp 2024.
Dave JacksonAnd I have ten things, maybe eleven if you're good, that I learned at camp.
Dave JacksonAnd wait till you hear about the one that made everyone squeal like a teenager at a Taylor Swift concert.
Dave JacksonLet's start the show, the school of podcasting with Dave Jackson.
Dave JacksonPodcasting since 2005.
Dave JacksonI am your award winning hall of Fame podcast coach, Dave Jackson, thanking you so much for tuning in.
Dave JacksonIf you're new to the show, this is where I help you plan.
Dave JacksonI help you launch, I help you grow.
Dave JacksonAnd hey, if you want to monetize your podcast, my website is schoolofpodcasting.com.
Dave Jacksonuse the coupon code listener, that's l a s t e n e r when you sign up for either a monthly or yearly subscription.
Dave JacksonSo the first thing we have to figure out, what the heck is an ecamm?
Dave JacksonEcamm is a software program that makes it super easy to do both live stream, or if you just want to make like, recorded videos, screen shares, things like that.
Dave JacksonIt is amazing.
Dave JacksonAnd here's one of the things we're going to talk about.
Dave JacksonSetting yourself apart.
Dave JacksonIt's only available if you're on a Mac.
Dave JacksonYep.
Dave JacksonNow why is that?
Dave JacksonBecause you're cutting out a big chunk of your audience.
Dave JacksonWell, yeah, but on the other hand, what a community.
Dave JacksonAnd that's one of the things we're going to talk about.
Dave JacksonThe community that has formed around this software is absolutely insane.
Dave JacksonAnd so that's where we're gonna get to today.
Dave JacksonNumber one, the first one was from a guy named Daniel Chi.
Dave JacksonHe did a presentation on presenting, and normally he's kind of like the super techy, nerdy guy, that ecamm.
Dave JacksonAnd he did something that I love, and that is, he takes a concept that I believe and, you know, something I actually use.
Dave JacksonAnd he just said it so much better.
Dave JacksonThat's more impactful.
Dave JacksonIt's easier to understand.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, oh, I am so borrowing that.
Dave JacksonAnd that is, he mentioned the three f's, and it goes like this.
Dave JacksonSo think of this.
Dave JacksonI've said many times on this show, if you can be a little vulnerable, if you can kind of show that, I know what it's like.
Dave JacksonShow a little empathy.
Dave JacksonAnd Daniel came up the three f's, and I know how you feel.
Dave JacksonI felt the same way.
Dave JacksonHere is what I found.
Dave JacksonAnd when he said that, I was like, oh, that is such a cool way of saying that I know how you feel.
Dave JacksonI felt the same way.
Dave JacksonHere's what I found.
Dave JacksonAnd I love the fact that a, it just oozes compassion and empathy.
Dave JacksonBut that last part about.
Dave JacksonHere's what I found that kind of positions you as, hey, follow me, and I will show you the way around this.
Dave JacksonNow, the other thing I want to mention about this, this is great information.
Dave JacksonAnd in the show notes, out@schoolofpodcasting.com.
Dave Jackson954.
Dave JacksonSo if you're like, hey, this Daniel Chi guy sounds like a good guy, I have links.
Dave JacksonWrite to Daniel Chi, and Chi is chi.
Dave JacksonDaniel Chi live.
Dave JacksonBut I also got to go to an alpaca farm.
Dave JacksonNow, why did I go to an alpaca farm?
Dave JacksonBecause I've never been to an alpaca farm.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, let's go to an alpaca farm.
Dave JacksonSo I got to actually feed an alpaca, which was fun.
Dave JacksonAnd Daniel was part of my group, and he's a really cool guy.
Dave JacksonAnd so the first thing I learned was the three f's.
Speaker BNumber two.
Dave JacksonAll right, now the next thing, and this is the one I was talking about, that if you want to see, and I say this with love and compassion, a bunch of nerds.
Dave JacksonLike, a bunch of video, live streaming nerds.
Dave JacksonAnd they had a guy from Zoom.
Dave JacksonYou know, Zoom, the, you know, the person.
Dave JacksonWe've learned to grow in love, thanks to our good friend Covid.
Dave JacksonYeah, that zoom.
Dave JacksonThat company integrates with ecamm and ecamm now because it wasn't hard to join an ecamm live stream, but everybody knows how to join a zoom call, so zoom now integrates with ecamm.
Dave JacksonAnd so now instead of saying, hey, here's my link to ecamm, just go, here's my link to zoom.
Dave JacksonAnd you can bring people in all sorts of really cool stuff, but we're in a room filled with video people who apparently, for a while now, have not been happy.
Dave JacksonAnd I didn't know this.
Dave JacksonDid you know this zoom resolution is, like, 720.
Dave JacksonAnd so the guy from Zoom is there a.
Dave JacksonAnd he's explaining how he's happy to work with ecamm, and it's a great integration and extra tools and what they're doing, and blah, blah, blah.
Dave JacksonAnd then he said, oh, by the way, we do have an announcement.
Dave JacksonHe said, all you have to do is go in, I guess, and turn it on.
Dave JacksonBut Zoom is going to 1080.
Dave JacksonAnd it was like Christmas had come early.
Dave JacksonPeople are pounding on the tables.
Dave JacksonThey're stomping their feet.
Dave JacksonIt was like, I was like, wow, these people apparently really have been asking for 1080 for a long time.
Dave JacksonSo from what I understand, you go in to your Zoom settings and you turn on hd.
Dave JacksonIf not, you can request it.
Dave JacksonBut that was one thing.
Dave JacksonI was like, okay, I'll have to look into that.
Speaker BNumber three, I had never heard of.
Dave JacksonThis, and I'm surprised.
Dave JacksonIn all the Facebook groups and Reddit places, nobody's ever mentioned this.
Dave JacksonThere is a remote settings app for Zoom.
Dave JacksonNow I know why people haven't talked about it, because it's not easy to find.
Dave JacksonI sat right next to the Zoom guy at dinner, and he's like, yeah, just go to the Zoom app store or something.
Dave JacksonAnd it's there.
Dave JacksonIt took me a bit to find it, but what this is, you can see your guest settings.
Dave JacksonSo when they have a microphone, but it sounds like they're on their built in laptop microphone, you could see that.
Dave JacksonAnd then what you do is you can't take over their machine, but you can see their settings and go, ooh.
Dave JacksonAnd then you click on, okay, let's use this microphone.
Dave JacksonLet's do this.
Dave JacksonLet's do that.
Dave JacksonWhatever that use, you know, musical settings, turn off background, whatever you're going to do, right.
Dave JacksonYou can change the settings, and then you send them a request that comes up on their screen that says, hey, so and so wants to change your settings to this.
Dave JacksonAnd when they say, okay, it does.
Dave JacksonAnd so I know a lot of us were on a budget.
Dave JacksonI know how you feel.
Dave JacksonRight?
Dave JacksonWe go back to the three f's.
Dave JacksonI know what it felt.
Dave JacksonHere's what I found.
Dave JacksonYou can control your guests zoom settings with this app.
Dave JacksonNow, I personally have not used this yet.
Dave JacksonI just found it.
Dave JacksonLinks in the show notes out@schoolofpodcasting.com.
Dave Jackson954 number four, I was happy to share this when I got home with Craig van Slyke.
Dave JacksonHe's a member of the School of podcasting, and he does a show called AI goes to college, because I had never heard of this.
Dave JacksonI think if you've never played with AI, a lot of these AI image tools, you know, in the early days, they'd give you like six fingers, and that's been kind of fixed.
Dave JacksonBut the one thing that hadn't been fixed is if you said, give me a sign that says 50% off, it just, the, the text always looked horrendous.
Dave JacksonWell, I went to a session with Jeff C and Ian Anderson, and this is not the guy from Jethro Tall.
Dave JacksonAnd they had a giant list of AI tools, and one of them was ideogram AI.
Dave JacksonAnd I put in a quick prompt.
Dave JacksonI told it, I said, make an illustration of a dark blue square with the text power of podcasting in white, and then add some lightning bolts around the text, and it spit out like three or four.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, that's not awful.
Dave JacksonLike, that's definitely better than whatever I would do in canva.
Dave JacksonAnd it took all of, I don't know, 20 seconds, something like that.
Dave JacksonAnd so that was one that I was like, oh, that's really, really cool.
Dave JacksonAnd I should say, this is the power of word of mouth.
Dave JacksonI've known Jeff for years, but really, in the last year, we've kind of got to know each other.
Dave JacksonI've been on his show.
Dave JacksonHis show, by the way, social media news live.
Dave JacksonIt's a great show.
Dave JacksonEvery Friday I've been on that show.
Dave JacksonAnd Jeff was on this show talking about Pinterest.
Dave JacksonYou can find him at Jeff C.
Dave JacksonNow.
Dave JacksonC is sieh.com, and I'll put links to his YouTube and everything else out at the show notes.
Dave JacksonAnd I was doing an episode of Ask the podcast coach, and I've only been using ecamm for about six months.
Dave JacksonAnd Jeff's like, oh, you should go to ecamm creator cam.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, okay.
Dave JacksonAnd he's like, yeah, it's really cool.
Dave JacksonIt's one of the best events.
Dave JacksonAnd simply by saying that, I went to the website for it, saw what the price was, and ordered it without really knowing what the heck I got into.
Dave JacksonAnd the other cool thing was, I got to hang out with Jeff and his co host, Connor of, again, social media news Live.
Dave JacksonAnd Connor's amazing.
Dave JacksonSo is Jeff.
Dave JacksonI and Jeff's daughter was there, and this was really cool for me on kind of a, and nobody probably knows what I mean when I say this, a Norman Rockwell moment, because Jeff's 23, 23 year old daughter is helping him with the production of his show, more or less following in her dad's footsteps.
Dave JacksonAnd.
Dave JacksonAnd I say this with love and compassion, of course.
Dave JacksonShe was very 23.
Dave JacksonShe was talking about what she wants to do with her life and what she has planned, and I'm like, I remember thinking that.
Dave JacksonAnd so it was very cool to meet her.
Dave JacksonConnor had me in stitches all week.
Dave JacksonAnd, oh, I need to explain again that I've now done my homework.
Dave JacksonIan Anderson has another name.
Dave JacksonIan Anderson Gray.
Dave JacksonProbably because he got tired of saying, no, I'm not the guy in Jethro tall.
Dave JacksonBut I'll have links to him.
Dave JacksonHe's, again, this guy that's just worked with all sorts of companies and as we like to say here, he appears to be a big shot smarty pants.
Dave JacksonAnd so he had a ton of great info as well.
Speaker BNumber five.
Dave JacksonAnd I'll have links to that text AI tool again, idiogram.
Dave JacksonBut the next one was one of my favorites.
Dave JacksonWhen I saw this guy was going to be at ecamm creator camp, I'm like, oh, I'm definitely clicking go.
Dave JacksonAnd his name is Daniel Patel.
Dave JacksonHes a YouTube consultant and he has an amazing YouTube channel, especially if you want to learn DaVinci Resolve.
Dave JacksonAnd he shared what I feel is like the worlds best analogy of how coke now were talking.
Dave JacksonThe soft drink here is like the worlds best multichannel distributor because, you know, as a content creator, we put things out as a podcast, we put things out on YouTube, we put things out on Twitter, put things out here.
Dave JacksonMulti platform distributor.
Dave JacksonAnd he said the very first multi platform distributor was Coke, to which we all kind of went, huh?
Dave JacksonBut he said, in the early days of coke, when it was in bottles, back in the day, you might see a vending machine at a gas station or some other hot place where thirsty people might be and you would put your money in, a bottle would come out, you would use this built in bottle opener that was right on the door and start, you know, dumping gallons of coke down your throat.
Dave JacksonAnd later you could buy a can and it might be any of their many flavors, right?
Dave JacksonDiet Coke, caffeine free coke there a coke everywhere, a coke coke, right?
Dave JacksonSo you'd have a machine, but now it was cans giving you one at a time.
Dave JacksonSo now no bottle opener needed.
Dave JacksonYou just flip the thing.
Dave JacksonAnd I mean, now you've got the coke thing, right?
Dave JacksonBut you could, if you wanted to go to a grocery store, and now instead of buying them one at a time, you could buy them as a six pack, as a twelve pack.
Dave JacksonNow, these weren't cold, they weren't supposed to be.
Dave JacksonThey were designed to be taken home and put in your fridge.
Dave JacksonBut it was the same product, meaning the audience where they were giving them what they needed at that time.
Dave JacksonNow they're also two liter bottles.
Dave JacksonThere's 20 ounce bottles.
Dave JacksonYou can buy a six pack, a 20 ounce bottles, right?
Dave JacksonYou can do all that stuff.
Dave JacksonBut the bottom line is coke met their audience where they were in a format they needed and delivered a consistent product.
Dave JacksonAnother one was, well, let's see, we have all these restaurants.
Dave JacksonAnd it wouldn't make any sense.
Dave JacksonCan you imagine how many two liters or how many cases of coke you would have to have to feed coke to your patrons in your restaurant?
Dave JacksonSo what they do, they started selling coke as a syrup mix in a little fizzy water, and presto, here's your coke again, same product, meeting the audience where they are in a format that they can use.
Dave JacksonAnd to me, if you've, you know, you're new to the show, if you make me think you got me.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, you know what?
Dave JacksonThat's true.
Dave JacksonThat's very true.
Dave JacksonAnd the last time I checked, Coca Cola is a pretty successful company.
Dave JacksonSo that was one that I was like, man, I knew this guy was going to be good, but that really had me thinking.
Speaker BNumber six.
Dave JacksonAll right, this one I kind of already knew, but I wanted to kind of let you in on this.
Dave JacksonDaniel is a badass.
Dave JacksonThere's no other way to put this.
Dave JacksonI found his channel about a year ago when a company called Wondershare, Filmora decided which, by the way, Daniel was like the Filmora guy at the time.
Dave JacksonAnd they decided not to honor their lifetime licenses to their software, which Daniel had kind of built part of his empire on.
Dave JacksonAnd he had told all of his audience, hey, buy this lifetime license and check out this great software.
Dave JacksonHere's my tutorials.
Dave JacksonAnd so when he went to login and the software was like, nope, sorry, we don't honor that license anymore.
Dave JacksonYeah, Daniel went public and said, hey, just so you guys know, this is what happened to me this morning.
Dave JacksonWell, you know, again, Phil Mora, Wondershare, whatever, they decided not to honor their license.
Dave JacksonAnd when he had kind of thrown them under the bus, and he really didn't throw them under the bus, he's just like, hey, my license doesn't work.
Dave JacksonAnd according to this memo, fill Mora isn't going to honor their license.
Dave JacksonAnd so when he went public, how did Fillmora, you know, reply?
Dave JacksonDid they go, oh, we were.
Dave JacksonNo, no.
Dave JacksonThey went after his channel and they demanded a video that they had sponsored be removed.
Dave JacksonYeah.
Dave JacksonSo they actually went after Daniel.
Dave JacksonAnd so what did Daniel do?
Dave JacksonHe shared this on his content.
Dave JacksonHey, everybody, look what Filmora is doing to me.
Dave JacksonThey're trying to ruin my channel and do all this other stuff.
Dave JacksonAnd let's just say that Filmora's move of attacking everyone's mentor did not go over well.
Dave JacksonSo Filmora finally did the right thing, but not without hinting that they might sue people who said things they didn't appreciate.
Dave JacksonSo in the show notes out at school, podcasting.com 954, I have a link to that playlist and it is fascinating.
Dave JacksonAnd to me, the, I'm not really an old hippie, that would be my brother, but I love the fact that he just basically waved the bird at the company and was kind of like, okay, I'm going to release the kraken on you.
Dave JacksonAnd because when people saw how he was being treated, they just dumped the software.
Dave JacksonAnd that's when they're like, oh, hey, we were just kidding.
Dave JacksonWe're going to honor that.
Dave JacksonBut not before.
Dave JacksonNot only because that story was such an insanely bad idea of customer service that other even more popular youtubers were talking about it and bringing the story to the forefront.
Dave JacksonSo I love the fact that he just kept his cool circle the wagons.
Dave JacksonAnd if you ever wonder why he's not talking about Fillmore anymore, he's now Mister Davinci resolve.
Dave JacksonWell, that's it.
Dave JacksonBut I just love that story.
Dave JacksonAnd the fact that he's like, yeah, I don't think so.
Speaker BNumber seven.
Dave JacksonYeah, I got a lot from his, his talk.
Dave JacksonSo the other one is Daniel.
Dave JacksonHis way of achieving success is one way of doing it.
Dave JacksonAnd I love his channel.
Dave JacksonAgain, he shared on his channel how he really likes YouTube shorts.
Dave JacksonWell, depending on the YouTube guru you're talking to, I've seen other people very strongly say YouTube shorts will ruin your channel.
Dave JacksonAnd in this case, Daniel even kind of said, look, your mileage may vary, but he shared lots of slides to back up his strategy of where he was using shorts on a really regular, and here's that word, consistent basis.
Dave JacksonAnd in the end, all those people, there was a company called Black Magic Design.
Dave JacksonThey are the makers of Da Vinci resolve.
Dave JacksonAnd so they started asking their customers, hey, how did you find out about DaVinci resolve?
Dave JacksonAnd one name came up over and over and over, Daniel Battal.
Dave JacksonAnd so they went to him and said, we would like to sponsor your YouTube channel to the tune of six figures.
Dave JacksonSo when people say shorts don't work, I'm going to go, have you ever heard of Daniel Patel?
Dave JacksonAnd so it's not that Daniel's way is the way.
Dave JacksonIt is a way.
Dave JacksonAnd it works for his audience.
Dave JacksonEvery audience is different.
Dave JacksonBut I just love the fact that he shared it and he had the stats to back it up.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, all right, that's.
Dave JacksonTo me, I was like, that's a way to do it.
Dave JacksonAnd I know.
Dave JacksonAnd he even said, there are a lot of people that disagree with him.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, well, maybe we need to start kind of reemphasizing that when we say these are the best practices to point you towards a way of success.
Dave JacksonBut if somebody says, I have the way, like, if.
Dave JacksonIf you just do this, you will be successful.
Dave JacksonI'm not sure that's 100% accurate.
Dave JacksonAnd if they're trying to get you to sign up for three easy payments, eh, you know, you might want to just do a little more research.
Speaker BNumber eight.
Dave JacksonAll right.
Dave JacksonAnd I realize some of these are kind of duh, but I also saw how to build a software company.
Dave JacksonECamm was created by two twin brothers, Ken and Glenn.
Dave JacksonAnd I'm going to butcher their last name.
Dave JacksonAspelag.
Dave JacksonAspilah.
Dave JacksonAspilah.
Dave JacksonMaybe silent G.
Dave JacksonI don't know.
Dave JacksonKen and Glenn, that's what I call them.
Dave JacksonAnd I love that they started with a simple goal of building apps to solve problems.
Dave JacksonBecause if you want to make money with anything, with a company, with a podcast, whatever, 99% of the time you are solving a problem, whether it's saving somebody time, saving them money, saving them headaches, saving them from a bad day at work, by making them.
Dave JacksonLAUghtER people typically pay when you solve a problem.
Dave JacksonAnd if you want them to buy something, if you want to make money with your podcast, I always say the best way is to have a product or service.
Dave JacksonAnd sometimes that service is, you know, a supercast or Patreon or whatever you want to do.
Dave JacksonBut realize you, the best way is not, again, not the way.
Dave JacksonIt's one of the ways.
Dave JacksonBut according to their website, our strategy is if an app is useful, well designed, and properly maintained, it will sell itself without the need for clever advertising and glitzy marketing.
Dave JacksonAnd the twins were there, right?
Dave JacksonThe owners of ecamm were there all week, just hanging out with their customers.
Dave JacksonBecause how do you grow your podcast?
Dave JacksonYou find out what people want, and then you give it to them.
Dave JacksonAnd so when I was listening to these guys talk about what they have on the roadmap for 2025, one of them was VST plugins.
Dave JacksonSo, you know that de Esser or that plosive fixer or all the other plugins we've talked about here.
Dave JacksonYeah.
Dave JacksonThat's coming to ecamm.
Dave JacksonAnd they know.
Dave JacksonThey know that people want local recording, and they're probably working on that behind the scenes.
Dave JacksonSo the same way you build a successful software company is the same way you build a podcast.
Dave JacksonYou find out who your audience is.
Dave JacksonAnd they said people who own Macs, because here's the other thing.
Dave JacksonAs much as like, oh, they're so stupid.
Dave JacksonThere's a whole, you know, PC kind of market.
Dave JacksonYeah.
Dave JacksonBut when everybody's on the same operating system, it's a whole lot easier to write software, don't you think?
Dave JacksonAnd so they realize they can make it bigger.
Dave JacksonBut I'm here to tell you, the ecamm fam, as they call it, their Facebook group is great.
Dave JacksonEverybody there, it really was a family kind of feel to it.
Dave JacksonAnd here I was the first time at their event.
Dave JacksonThis is the second year they've had it, and I was welcome with open arms.
Dave JacksonSo I just thought it was a really cool way and a really great kind of case study on how to build a software company.
Speaker BNumber nine.
Dave JacksonNumber nine.
Dave JacksonNumber nine is, if you want to stand out, you ready for this?
Dave JacksonYou got to do something different.
Dave JacksonAnd I've attended some events.
Dave JacksonWhen they first started, I was at pot indie last year.
Dave JacksonThat was the first time they did it.
Dave JacksonPot indie is coming up in November 9, and theyre terrific because everyone got to consume the exact same content.
Dave JacksonAnd because theyre smaller, you get to network with everyone and then kind of unfortunately, look, we do our best to keep that small feel while we make these events huge.
Dave JacksonAnd don't get me wrong, I love Podfest.
Dave JacksonI'm speaking at Podfest in January.
Dave JacksonI love podcast movement, but I adore the fact that ecamm topped the attendees at 100.
Dave JacksonThey said, hey, if you want to be here, they're only letting 100 in.
Dave JacksonGet your tickets now.
Dave JacksonAnd they went quick.
Dave JacksonAnd if they're, if it was me, I would raise the price for next year.
Dave JacksonBut they're not doing it as a money maker.
Dave JacksonThey're doing it to find out what their community wants, what they're thinking, and so that they can make a product.
Dave JacksonAnd by keeping it cheap and delivering enormous value, you walk out of that ecamm cam telling everybody you know, oh, no, no.
Dave JacksonI know Riverside's great, and it edits and all that stuff, but if you're on a Mac and you're not using ecamm, you at least got to give it a shot.
Dave JacksonIt's an amazing program.
Dave JacksonAnd so I would love to see more events like this, like pod indie.com.
Dave Jacksonuse the coupon code, Dave, because there is a virtual ticket, by the way, for that.
Dave JacksonAnd I like to see small events to go along with the big ones.
Dave JacksonI don't want the big ones.
Dave JacksonCause I don't think they would ever go and like, hey, instead of doing one big event, we're gonna do three, and we're gonna cap it at like 200 people.
Dave JacksonI just.
Dave JacksonI don't see them doing that.
Dave JacksonAnd for the record, I know why.
Dave JacksonThe amount of effort it takes to do a small event is kind of the same amount of effort to do a larger event.
Dave JacksonThere's just much more risk when.
Dave JacksonWhen people buy a block of hotels if we don't fill those.
Dave JacksonThat event has to eat that money, and that's spooky.
Dave JacksonAnd so I guess they would rather take that chance once than multiple times.
Dave JacksonNot really sure.
Dave JacksonBut just for me, it stood out like a.
Dave JacksonLike a beautiful sore thumb.
Dave JacksonLike, this is way different than any of their conference.
Dave JacksonIn fact, when I signed up, they're like, this is not like any other conference.
Dave JacksonAnd they did not lie at all.
Dave JacksonThey also had one of the best swag bags.
Dave JacksonThere was a newer.
Dave JacksonYou know, that company.
Dave JacksonNewer, newer, newer.
Dave JacksonWhatever it is.
Dave JacksonLittle light that you could use.
Dave JacksonWell, really probably with anything.
Dave JacksonIt was pretty blinding.
Dave JacksonSo it was cool that you got something in your swag bag that you could go home and actually use.
Dave JacksonAnd they had a.
Dave JacksonIf you do light balancing, you know, white balancing, and then you get the white card, the gray card and all that.
Dave JacksonThey had one of those that's like worth $20 or something like that.
Dave JacksonSo that was cool.
Dave JacksonAnd since we're kind of on the topic of standing out, I didn't learn this at Ecamm creator camp, but I did learn it on the plane.
Dave JacksonI'm listening to the book earn it unconventional strategies for brave marketers.
Dave JacksonThis is from Steve Pratt, and there are some great ideas of doing things to set yourself apart.
Dave JacksonNow, it does make it sound like creating an amazing show takes work, and that's because, well, it kind of does.
Speaker CIn the last 40 years, the amount of promotion has gone up exponentially.
Speaker CAt the same time, the success of promoted content, products, and services hasn't increased at all.
Speaker CThat's because the secret isn't to focus on your promo.
Speaker CThe secret is to create something that those you serve want to tell others about.
Dave JacksonAnd he's actually quoting Seth Godin there, but he does that a lot.
Dave JacksonHe quotes other marketing books.
Dave JacksonSo it's a great book so far.
Dave JacksonI'm.
Dave JacksonWhere am I at?
Dave JacksonChapter four.
Dave JacksonAnd it's called earn it unconventional strategies for brave marketers.
Speaker BNumber ten.
Dave JacksonAnd this one made me think.
Dave JacksonAnd I'm like, he might have a point.
Dave JacksonAnd that is my buddy doc rock is on the flow.
Dave JacksonThat is ecamm's podcast YouTube channel.
Dave JacksonHe's there with Katie.
Dave JacksonAnd he says, an introvert.
Dave JacksonHe says, there aren't any.
Dave JacksonThere are no introverts.
Dave JacksonAnd if you're an introvert, you're going, no, I think there is.
Dave JacksonYou're looking at one.
Dave JacksonRight.
Dave JacksonAn introvert is a person that doesn't like the present company, because every one of those people around, somebody that you know, somebody, their friends, whoever, their spouse, well, you can't get them to shut up.
Dave JacksonSo if you're super quiet around other people, it's because you don't know them yet, or maybe you don't like them.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, hmm, interesting.
Dave JacksonI will say this.
Dave JacksonI've said in the past that I get nervous around meeting other people, and I I think I'm lying to myself on that.
Dave JacksonI had one little moment where I was kind of like, uh, but for the most part, I just talked to people and asked them what brought to the show, and I'm getting much better at that.
Dave JacksonSo maybe there are no introverts.
Dave JacksonMaybe we're just hanging around people that we're not comfortable with.
Dave JacksonAnd how do you get comfortable with people?
Dave JacksonYou gotta talk to them.
Dave JacksonWe have a bonus clip about the hotel coming up right after this.
Dave JacksonAll right, the bonus one.
Dave JacksonNumber eleven.
Dave JacksonStay at the hotel.
Dave JacksonAnd I know, and I'll kind of explain what happened here.
Dave JacksonI stayed at a hotel, was the best western.
Dave JacksonAnd I'm gonna say five to seven minutes from the hotel was a Hampton inn.
Dave JacksonAnd I ended up, uh, paying anywhere from $20 to $35 a day for Uber rides.
Dave JacksonAnd the hotel, the official one, was 180.
Dave JacksonSo, yes, mine was 110.
Dave JacksonTheirs was 180.
Dave JacksonAnd so.
Dave JacksonBut I'm spending, you know, $35 a day to go back and forth to the downtown area where they had this.
Dave JacksonSo I saved $35 a day, which, again, I was there quite a few days.
Dave JacksonSo I saved $175.
Dave JacksonSo I basically, it's like getting a hotel room night for free.
Dave JacksonBut.
Dave JacksonAnd I realize, I feel.
Dave JacksonI know how you feel.
Dave Jackson$175 is a chunk of change.
Dave JacksonAnd I would.
Dave JacksonI would change this if the hotel was in walking distance.
Dave JacksonSo if the hotel from the event was here and there was one, like, you know, three blocks that way, that you could save some money, maybe.
Dave JacksonBut here's the thing.
Dave JacksonI'm in Amesbury.
Dave JacksonWell, actually, I was in Manchester, New Hampshire, and then I took an Uber into Amesbury.
Dave JacksonAnd if you're probably going, Manchester?
Dave JacksonWhat?
Dave JacksonYeah.
Dave JacksonSo consequently, not maybe as many Uber drivers as, say, if I was in Boston.
Dave JacksonAnd so when I would go to get ready to drive downtown.
Dave JacksonTo get more great content, I would have to start looking for an Uber about 30 minutes.
Dave JacksonSo more or less an hour because it was, I don't know, ten minutes.
Dave JacksonBut I would.
Dave JacksonI remember the one time I'm like, hey, find me an Uberland.
Dave JacksonAnd it was like, all right, we're working on it.
Dave JacksonOkay, we're sorry for the delay.
Dave JacksonDon't close this app because we're still looking.
Dave JacksonWhere.
Dave JacksonAnd then it finally said, hey, you know that cheap version of Uber?
Dave JacksonYeah.
Dave JacksonThere aren't anybody but you can take the big, oversized Uber if you'd like.
Dave JacksonAnd being that I needed an Uber, I was like, yeah, because it starts at eight and it's 715, and I'd been sitting there for, like, a half hour, 20 minutes.
Dave JacksonSo that's not a, you know, again, if I just stayed at the hotel, a, I could have slept in more because it wasn't going to take so long to find an Uber.
Dave JacksonAnd, you know, this is one of those.
Dave JacksonIt depends, right?
Dave JacksonIt depends on your budget.
Dave JacksonBut I just know for me, I was like, I think next time, unless I'm within walking distance of the hotel, I'm just going to stay at the hotel.
Dave JacksonIt's expensive.
Dave JacksonIf you want to write it off on your taxes, you can do that, of course.
Dave JacksonAnd if you need more help with taxes, of course, go see my buddy Ralph over at ask Ralph podcast.com.
Dave Jacksonhe can hook you up with all sorts of those questions.
Dave JacksonBut, uh, that was one that I was like, hmm.
Dave JacksonAnd it was not like a major, uh, the.
Dave JacksonThe second day was the day it was like, yeah, we can't find anybody.
Dave JacksonAnd I get why because I had, uh.
Dave JacksonYou ever have, like, chatty Cathy in Uber?
Dave JacksonThe guy's just going, there was a guy making 50 grand a year driving Uber, and he was an old professor and yada, yada, yada.
Dave JacksonAnd he was explaining all this, and I saw where it was like, oh, there's somebody 17 minutes away.
Dave JacksonBut it was only, like, for $6.
Dave JacksonAnd he said, yeah, he does a lot of ubering around the university, so he's ubering college kids, and their fares are, like, $4 because they want to go from here four blocks that way.
Dave JacksonAnd so I get it.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, hmm.
Dave JacksonWas an interesting experiment.
Dave JacksonDid it save me money?
Dave JacksonSure.
Dave JacksonIt probably saved me $175 for the whole week, but I'm just like, yeah, it was a little stressful at times.
Dave JacksonAnd I think next time I'm just going to stay at the hotel.
Dave JacksonAnd also, I want to support these events, and I realize they're on the hook for that hotel, so I should be staying there.
Dave JacksonAnyway, speaking of events.
Dave JacksonYeah, yeah, yeah.
Dave JacksonMy last tip here, so what are we up to?
Dave JacksonTwelve and even duds in was, if something's a pain in the butt and other people are using it, what's the one thing that's different here?
Dave JacksonSo I'll give you an example.
Dave JacksonI do not like the community tool discord.
Dave JacksonAnd anytime you're involved with an event, read all of the emails.
Dave JacksonI know they might send a little or they might send a lot or whatever, but it's really important that you read the email.
Dave JacksonAnd so I must have missed the one that said, hey, or I probably, I probably read it.
Dave JacksonI just didn't get it where they said, we will be saying things in Discord, and if you want to keep up to date with the event, you should use discord.
Dave JacksonAnd I must have saw that and went, oh, well, I'm sure they'll email us too.
Dave JacksonAnd they did email us, but there was a lot of content and a lot of networking that I could have taken place with.
Dave JacksonAnd there were contests and all sorts of giveaways and things like that going on in their Discord community group.
Dave JacksonAnd I missed it all, totally missed it all, because I was like, ugh, I hate discord.
Dave JacksonSo it dawned on me after I got there that like, hey, idiot, everybody else seems to have no problem with discord.
Dave JacksonMaybe it's you.
Dave JacksonAnd so I was like, why do I not like it?
Dave JacksonWell, it's in dark mode and it looks like an Atari game from, you know, 1996.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, well, let's see what we can do about that.
Dave JacksonSo I log in.
Dave JacksonI had like 100, literally like 150 messages unread.
Dave JacksonAnd there were a bunch of these groups that I had joined their group, and I was like, yeah, I've never logged in.
Dave JacksonI logged in.
Dave JacksonNobody else was in there.
Dave JacksonThey were just, you know, just a big desert of groups, but there were some that were active.
Dave JacksonAnd I was like, okay, hold on, let's.
Dave JacksonLet's prune here and get rid of all the groups that I'm never going to go into again.
Dave JacksonAnd then I turned it into from dark mode into light mode and spent, I don't know, five to ten minutes learning how to send a message and learning how to reply and learning how to do this.
Dave JacksonAnd I am not, what I would say, a big fan of discord, but if somebody says, hey, we communicate via discord, I can go in and get the messages.
Dave JacksonIt's available on a Mac, it's available on your phone, it's available on a PC.
Dave JacksonAnd so don't be such an old stick in the mud because it makes it harder for the event organizers.
Dave JacksonAnd I apologize profusely to Katie and Paul and Doc and everybody else that I was like, hey, I didn't realize this was going on.
Dave JacksonI'm sorry.
Dave JacksonI felt like, have you ever done that, that group project in school?
Dave JacksonAnd there's always that one guy that doesn't do anything and I was like, oh, crap, I'm that guy and I don't want to be that guy.
Dave JacksonSo if there's something that you just hate, maybe it's because you haven't taken the time to learn it.
Dave JacksonAnd why don't we learn it?
Dave JacksonBecause, well, that means I have to get out of my comfort zone.
Dave JacksonAnd I like it in my comfort zone.
Dave JacksonIt's comfortable.
Dave JacksonSo I get that.
Dave JacksonBut if you're not constantly learning in this society, you are going backwards.
Dave JacksonAnd I was just kind of like, yeah, you, you big dummy.
Dave JacksonI should have just taken the time to learn discord and I would have had a little better time.
Dave JacksonI missed out on deeper connections with people.
Dave JacksonSo that would be my last tip and the last thing that I learned at ecamm creator camp 2024.
Dave JacksonTo all my new friends that are listening to the show, it was a blast hanging out with you.
Dave JacksonAnd I look forward to next year because I'm definitely going back.
Dave JacksonI will just be in the discord group.
Dave JacksonI'll stay at the hotel and I'll be going back to, again something that will feel like Podfest and podcast movement and pod indie now is going on November 9.
Dave JacksonPod indie.com.
Dave Jacksonyou know, those feel like summer camp to me.
Dave JacksonAnd now so will ecamm creator camp.
Dave JacksonAnd I also, here's the last thing.
Dave JacksonWhen you come back from these things, don't go, that was cool.
Dave JacksonNo, make yourself a to do list.
Dave JacksonAnd so I already did.
Dave JacksonI'm going to install the Zoom integration with ecamm.
Dave JacksonI'm going to be playing with that.
Dave JacksonLike, don't just get the knowledge, do something with it.
Dave JacksonThey always go, knowledge is power.
Dave JacksonNo, knowledge is power when you act on it.
Dave JacksonAnd so ive got to act on these things that I learned.
Dave JacksonAnd maybe you can too.
Dave JacksonMaybe youre going to integrate the three fs the next time you have to be empathetic to someone, maybe youre going to go play with Zoom and check out some of those settings and those things that you did or the whatever it was called idiogram.
Dave JacksonAnd make yourself an AI tool with some text.
Dave JacksonOr go check out Daniel Patel's amazing YouTube channel and check out Jeff Czdd and Ian Anderson Gray and everybody else that I mentioned.
Dave JacksonThe links are out there in the show notes, schoolofpodcasting.com 954.
Dave JacksonAnd that's going to do it for the show.
Dave JacksonI'm done.
Dave JacksonI'm pooped, I'm tired, and I need a break.
Dave JacksonI need a nap, and I got to unpack and do laundry.
Dave JacksonOtherwise I'll be wearing.
Dave JacksonYou know how you have that one pair of underwear that's like, ugh.
Dave JacksonWhen I see that come up in the drawer, it's like it's time to do laundry and it's time to do laundry.
Dave JacksonSo thanks so much for listening.
Dave JacksonI do appreciate you taking time.
Dave JacksonAnd if you want to start a podcast, you know where to find me.
Dave JacksonGo to schoolofpodcasting.com, join, use the coupon code listener and save on either a monthly or yearly subscription and join the community.
Dave JacksonSure, we have step by step courses.
Dave JacksonWe have unlimited coaching.
Dave JacksonI might talk about that in next week's episode.
Dave JacksonThat was one of the questions I got from Jeff.
Dave JacksonHe's like, okay, how you doing that, that unlimited thing that doesn't seem to work on paper?
Dave JacksonMaybe I'll explain that.
Dave JacksonOr maybe you should just join and find out.
Dave JacksonIt's actually not that complicated.
Dave JacksonBut I do appreciate your time.
Dave JacksonUntil next week.
Dave JacksonTake care.
Dave JacksonGod bless.
Dave JacksonClasses dismissed.
Speaker BIf you like what you hear, then don't tell someone.
