Clarence F. Birkhead is the Sheriff of Durham County, North Carolina, bringing more than four decades of experience in law enforcement and public service to his role. A native of Asheboro, he began his career in 1984 as a deputy sheriff in Randolph County before joining Duke University’s Public Safety Department in 1988, where he spent 17 years rising through the ranks and ultimately serving as Chief of Police. After leading the police department in Hillsborough and working in security and consulting roles, Birkhead was elected Durham County Sheriff in 2018, becoming the first African‑American to hold the position and later earning reelection to a second term.
