00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:08.779
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Welcome um, to the Living the Dream podcast with Curveball. Um, if you believe you can achieve.

00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:59.130
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Welcome um, to the Living the Dream with Curveball podcast, a ah, show where I and a few guests that teach, motivate and inspire. Today we're going to be talking about experiential learning as I am joined by Larry Eastho. Larry has over 40 years in the professional services. He has a lot of experience in it. You know, he's things like a writer, lawyer, consultant and he teaches his clients experiential learning. So we're going to be talking to him about all uh, that he's been doing in his 40 years of service and what experiential learning is. So Larry, thank you so much for joining me today.

00:00:59.429 --> 00:01:01.341
> Speaker B>My pleasure. Happy to be here.

00:01:01.526 --> 00:01:04.849
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Why don't you start off by telling everybody a little bit about yourself.

00:01:05.510 --> 00:01:08.010
> Speaker B>Wow, that's a big, that's a tall order.

00:01:08.689 --> 00:01:29.034
> Speaker B>Um, I've done, I've done a lot of things in my life. Um, I'm not one of those people who at age 7 had a vision of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So I just, I like to think of myself in some respects as the master of default decisions. I did a lot of things because by default, not because I onto them, m. Because they seemed right at the time. So I've had, had a ton of experiences.

00:01:29.081 --> 00:01:42.665
> Speaker B>I went to university, I, I trained as a lawyer, I practiced law, I left law, worked as a consultant, I wrote a book, I did some training and development and coaching. Um, and now I'm back writing again.

00:01:42.737 --> 00:02:17.810
> Speaker B>So I think that uh, it was one of my friends says when I grow up I think I'll be a writer. And uh, this is what I enjoy doing both most and, and also helping people learn, um, early. Oh, I guess one of my, one of my consulting projects, we were designing a training manual and I wound up taking a course in experiential learning. And this was a turning point and thought, okay, yeah, makes sense. We all hear that experience is a great teacher, but who teaches us how, how do we know how to learn from experience? So that's what I learned there and that's, that's what I'm more than happy to talk about.

00:02:19.639 --> 00:02:24.431
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Yeah, that was going to be my next question. Tell us what experiential learning is.

00:02:24.616 --> 00:03:06.639
> Speaker B>Experiential learning is, is based on actually taking a look at experiences, taking a look at what happened, ah, what, you know, what went into the, what went into the event, reflecting, um, on it. What conclusion can we draw from it, and how can we apply this in our ordinary life? So instead of just, oh, that was an interesting experience, it's kind of a, are a proactive thing. This is what happened. And really think about now. That's, that's really interesting. What did I learn from there? How can, how can I apply that again? How can, how can I do that for other people? So it's really, um, instead of just, uh, ignoring experiences once they've taken place, it's just, just pausing and reflecting on it and trying to pull a lesson from them.

00:03:08.699 --> 00:03:20.009
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well, let's talk about professional services. Uh, for those who might not know, explain what professional services is and how, you know, someone in the professional services business can market their services.

00:03:20.469 --> 00:03:34.557
> Speaker B>Well, professional services could range from, uh, high end, uh, medical, uh, legal kinds of things to, to tradespeople. They're all professional professionals. Anyone that gets paid for their service. So that's a huge range.

00:03:34.734 --> 00:03:51.139
> Speaker B>I've, I've narrowed my scope to service providers, self employed service providers who want to make a difference in other people's lives. These would be coaches, consultants, mentors, therapists, those kind folks. Um, and I included myself in, in that category.

00:03:51.139 --> 00:03:54.099
> Speaker B>Um, I'm an entrepreneur by default.

00:03:54.099 --> 00:04:13.349
> Speaker B>Um, I ran my own law practice because I didn't think that the lawyers I was working for really cared enough about the clients, and I didn't think the clients were getting the kind of service they needed and deserved. So I started my own law practice in order that I could really help clients make a difference in their lives.

00:04:13.719 --> 00:05:03.120
> Speaker B>So starting from there, those of us who are really interested in helping clients make a difference in their lives really don't have too much of a business background. In my case, if I'd wanted to run a business, I would have gone to business school. I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I did other things. Wound up in law. Um, fairly good as a lawyer, not so good as a business person. So I had to learn how to run a business, run a professional service business, and learn how to market the services. And that's the big one. Because marketing professional services is not like marketing a can of soup or, uh, you know, a box of dog food. It, it's. You're marketing your own personal attributes, your own skills, your own abilities. So it's a totally different kind of business than, than selling, selling cucumbers or selling potato chips.

00:05:05.379 --> 00:05:13.879
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well, what's one of the ways, you know, you can attract in the service business more and better clients and take your business to the next level?

00:05:14.730 --> 00:05:40.350
> Speaker B>Well, it Starts out with identifying first, uh, of all who you are. What are you really good at? If you're really good at, uh, helping people understand their personal problems, you're probably not going to be selling or promoting technological solutions or financial solutions. So you start out with, what am I really good at? And then the second element is who are the kinds of people that need this service?

00:05:40.889 --> 00:06:07.312
> Speaker B>So you really identify your service, how you match it to what the clients want, and then it gets to the interesting marketing stage. Uh, instead of doing what half the world is telling us we should be doing, the best thing is to attract clients the same way we make friends. And how do we do that? By being ourselves. By being our true, authentic selves. No. No lying. No. No exaggeration. No trying to be somebody else. No trying to do something else.

00:06:07.456 --> 00:06:28.610
> Speaker B>It's all about being your true, authentic self. So you wind up building relationships with potentially ideal clients. And these relationships with potentially ideal clients turn into relationships with real clients. And this results in more repeat business and more referral business. So it's all about being yourself and treating clients as, as friends. Treating clients the same way you would friends.

00:06:31.949 --> 00:06:41.889
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well, I know in your bio you talk about the law of attraction. So explain to us in your, your words what the law of attraction is and how it can help people.

00:06:42.189 --> 00:06:48.129
> Speaker B>Oh, that's a great question. A law of attraction happens all the time, but we're not really aware of it.

00:06:48.589 --> 00:06:54.598
> Speaker B>The law of attractions really has, has a couple of key components. One is deciding clearly what you want.

00:06:54.733 --> 00:07:00.502
> Speaker B>If you want a whole bunch of clients, you don't say, oh, I want a whole bunch of clients, you say, I want 10 clients.

00:07:00.646 --> 00:07:37.819
> Speaker B>And instead of saying just, I want 10 good clients, you want 10 clients who need this kind of service, are prepared to pay this much money and those, those kind attributes. So it's being very, very, very clear on what you want. Once you're clear on what you want, the next step is, is to take inspired action just instead of wishing it's doing something. And a, uh, story about what inspired action is. My, my father used to tell this story that two, two girls were running to school. And on the way to school, the school bell started to ring. And one girl said to the other, let's stop and pray so we can get, so that we're not late for school.

00:07:37.970 --> 00:07:43.576
> Speaker B>And the other girl said, no, no, let's pray while we're running. That way we can get there on time. So that's inspired action.

00:07:43.648 --> 00:07:52.408
> Speaker B>Praying while they were running. So in order to, to, to get the law of attraction working. We have to do something more than same old same old.

00:07:52.543 --> 00:07:58.024
> Speaker B>We have to apply our best stuff and do something really worthwhile, something out of the ordinary.

00:07:58.151 --> 00:08:27.480
> Speaker B>And once this happens, it just. Things unfold like crazy. And a law of attraction is one of those things that from my own experience everything becomes clearer and easier as I take action. So instead of sitting around won what I'm doing, do something, you get a plan to do something and it, it starts to unfold. I, I've simplified it terribly but it, it. It's an amazing process to work. It's, it's the uh, strategic planning process on steroids. It, it can be just so incredibly powerful.

00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:30.560
> Speaker B>All um.

00:08:30.699 --> 00:08:41.825
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Right, well tell us about your writings. You know, I know you're a writer as well, so you know, kind of give us a brief description of your writings and where we can get them and what we can expect when we read them.

00:08:41.976 --> 00:08:59.072
> Speaker B>Sure. Okay. My, my current book is a book called um, how to succeed in your professional service business book. And this is interesting because it started out as a marketing manual for professionals. Just reflecting back to what I said about, about professionals having trouble with marketing.

00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:04.828
> Speaker B>I wanted to write a book that helped self employed service professionals market their services.

00:09:05.330 --> 00:09:36.750
> Speaker B>But when I got into the book I realized well, since it. Since their personality and who they are is so much a part of their business and their service, you can't separate it. So by improving themselves as people, they also improve their business. So what I, what it resulted was a book that, that helps us come up with the supportive mindsets that, that support us as we take actions to it to attract clients. There's, I think there's two chapters on law of Attraction there. It really goes into detail of how to do it.

00:09:36.929 --> 00:09:54.245
> Speaker B>The, the book um, will take somebody from. Yeah, I want to, I want to run my business but I'm not too sure how to go about doing it on through the point that, that they are, they are. They have you know, clients are serving and, and uh, they've got a plan in place and they're doing, doing what they want to do.

00:09:54.317 --> 00:10:03.077
> Speaker B>Happily the book is, is, is. Is available um, on Amazon and all the sites now. But uh, yeah, that's, that's what's all about. It was a, it was a fun book to write.

00:10:03.173 --> 00:10:23.063
> Speaker B>One of the things I really enjoyed about it was telling stories. Every chapter has a, has a life story in it in which the, the uh, the ideas or the concepts or somebody something like that, people actually apply the concept and there's a story and the story is followed for questions that people can apply other people's experience to learn for themselves.

00:10:23.192 --> 00:10:32.899
> Speaker B>So it was kind of a fun book to write, and I think it's, it's a fun book to work through because it, uh, it allows people to really learn from what they're doing and build on it.

00:10:35.289 --> 00:10:43.669
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well, give us some best practice tips on, on how, you know, people can maintain a healthy work life balance.

00:10:44.090 --> 00:12:28.039
> Speaker B>Well, uh, the, the difficult answer is that we have nine environments that we work in, from, from finance to health to spirituality, all those kinds of things. I think the, the key though is, is to make sure that our body, mind and spirit are all aligned. And what that means is being engaged in work that is meaningful and gives us a sense of purpose, a sense of reason why we're here. Something we feel good about, something that really, at the end of the day we can say, wow, we really did something worthwhile. That's the head part of it. And certainly running a business is pretty tiring. So we've got to maintain good health. And that, that goes without saying. And uh, the last one is, is, is the spirit of the soul. Um, any, any professional service, Any professional service that involves helping people make a difference or improve their lives, the spirit or the soul has to be part of it. Now whether somebody believes in God or, or a power greater than themselves, it really doesn't matter what label they put on it. But we need the universe. We need, we need sources other than ourselves to help make things work. True of the Law of Attraction. People who, who spend a lot of time in Law of Attraction, they talk about deciding what you want, deciding, you know, the kinds of things you want, and then putting it out, uh, to the universe so the universe can deliver what you've asked for. So I, I think the, the short answer is, is to make sure the body, mind and spirit are aligned. And that, that happens as a result of a, uh, fairly detailed, fairly careful planning process. But it, it, uh, more often than not will. It will generate great results.

00:12:30.179 --> 00:12:34.923
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Tell us about any upcoming projects that you're working on that listeners need to be aware of.

00:12:35.091 --> 00:12:37.360
> Speaker B>Okay. Um, I'm, um.

00:12:38.100 --> 00:12:40.879
> Speaker B>I actually, I actually wrote two books.

00:12:41.779 --> 00:13:41.898
> Speaker B>One, um, book was the, the book that's published now. And the other one was a book called Transformation, um, Connection. How to. How to get from where you are to where you want to be. And I, I realized that there was a lot of overlap there that, that, uh, said things in one book that were echoed in another book. So I'm thinking this is not such a good idea. So what I decided to do was, was to take the best of both books and put it into a video course. So I'm, I'm in the product, timing is perfect. Uh, I'm halfway through designing a video course that, that's a transformation course. Basically help readers get from where they are to, to where they want to be. And it starts out talking about change and how difficult it is to make change. Offers some suggestions for making change. And turns out that the chapter that I wrote this morning was, was all about visualizing what you want, what you want to have, be and do. So I'm kind of excited about this because it's a, uh, it's totally, totally experiential learner.

00:13:41.994 --> 00:13:53.274
> Speaker B>Somebody can sit down with this course, work through the course and, and turn their life around. Um, so I'm kind of excited about that. It's uh, it's a, it's a biggie. It's going to be 12, 12 lessons.

00:13:53.322 --> 00:14:38.649
> Speaker B>I guess that's uh, that's on track to be released early January. So if somebody's listening to this now, listening this in 2024, this case of stay tuned, it's coming. If you're listening to it in 2025, it's already available on my website. So, uh, but that's pretty exciting. That's. To me, it's, it's part of my legacy project. Um, I, I've done a. Had a lot of really fantastic experiences and so I'm pulling together a lot of my experiences in the book and in the course. So it's gratifying for me to have two vehicles that uh, that I can use to share some of my experiences with others. You know, I've always believed that a good experience gets even better when it's shared. And I have the good fortune of being able to share some pretty amazing experiences.

00:14:40.190 --> 00:14:46.370
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Speaking of your website though, at your contact info so listeners can check it out. Keep it up. Keep up what you're up to.

00:14:47.059 --> 00:16:15.679
> Speaker B>Okay. Um, I've got a website. Um, the website is Larryisto.com um, and what I've done on the website, instead of just dump a whole bunch more information, I've set it up as a, as a, A, um, process to help individuals or help readers identify one thing they can do. I'm a big fan of doing one thing at a time. So the first page says, uh, you want to. If you want to, uh, if you want to grow your business. If you want. Yeah, if you want to grow your business. Check here. If you want to break through in marketing, go here. If you want to lear more about marketing, go here. Oh, and here's the biggie at the end. I've got a, a thank you gift for people who listen to the podcast. Uh, the thank you gift until the end of 2024 is a book, one of my books, 26 Ways for Professionals to get new Business. Um, and then that's, that's a thank you gift just, just for listening in. It's just 26 ways to get new business starting in January. Oh yeah, and there's also, um, until the end of, until the end of December. I've got six video courses that are 50% off people with, um, planning their, their 2025 year. And there's two services that are available to help plan the 2025 year. Um, in 2025 there'll be the, the new course that I talked about and there'll be another new free gift dealing with, with the transformation. So 2025, there'll be the, uh, the courses, the new course, and two thank you gifts. That's LarryEsto.com.

00:16:17.509 --> 00:16:25.250
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>All right, it closes out with some final thoughts. Maybe if that was something I forgot to talk about that you would like to touch on or any final thoughts you have for the listeners.

00:16:26.059 --> 00:16:51.918
> Speaker B>Uh, yeah, it, it, it, it's. I'm finding this as I'm, as I'm doing these podcasts, um, that not only, not only am I, am I sharing my information, but I'm learning things along the way. So even though ostensibly I'm, I'm passing on some of them. I think thoughts and sharing some of my ideas. I'm learning so much from, from hosts like you who are asking questions and ask. And forcing me to.

00:16:51.974 --> 00:16:54.957
> Speaker B>Not, not forcing, but encouraging me to think it.

00:16:55.014 --> 00:17:13.469
> Speaker B>Think of things in a different way. So I think, I think the key is, is that, that, uh, you know, we gotta, we gotta keep learning. We gotta keep our minds open and keep learning. Because otherwise, uh, yeah, otherwise we're gonna get stuck. We're gonna get stuck big time in the way thing. In the way things used to be and the way things used to be are not the way they are now.

00:17:15.608 --> 00:17:22.913
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>All right, ladies and gentlemen, LarryEsto.com. check him out. Check out his books and everything that he's up to.
