What happens when you blend country, rock, Americana, folk, blues, and pop into one distinctive sound? You get what fans call "Pam Music" – the signature style of singer-songwriter Pam Ross.

On this episode of Living the Dream with Curveball, we're joined by the genre-defying Pam Ross, whose musical journey has taken her from Pittsburgh to Houston and now to North Carolina, with frequent creative pilgrimages to her favorite performance destination: Nashville. When asked to categorize her sound, Pam offers perhaps the most authentic answer possible: "Depends on what song you're listening to." This refreshing resistance to genre constraints is at the heart of her artistic identity.

Pam shares insights into her diverse musical influences, citing everyone from Elton John and Dolly Parton to Nirvana and Metallica as formative inspirations. We dive into her current project – the aptly named second album "Outside the Box," which she's releasing one single at a time throughout the year. Her current song "Tonight" leans country, while her upcoming May release "Have a Good Time" ventures into pop-rock territory. We also explore her collaborative process with talented professionals like Canadian guitarist Ivan Pettit and Nashville mixing engineer Mark Frigo, who has worked with legends like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.

Whether you're a fan of thoughtful lyrics, genre-bending melodies, or authentic artistry, Pam Ross delivers something special that transcends traditional musical boundaries. Check out PamRossMusic.com to discover her work across all streaming platforms and social media, and keep an eye out for her performances across the Carolinas and Nashville as festival season kicks into high gear. New music is coming all year long – don't miss it!

00:00:00.420 --> 00:00:08.390
Welcome to the Living the Dream Podcast with Curveball, if you believe you can achieve.

00:00:08.390 --> 00:00:24.053
Welcome to the Living the Dream with Curveball Podcast, a show where I interview guests that teach, motivate and inspire.

00:00:24.053 --> 00:00:29.152
Today, I am joined by singer-songwriter Pam Ross.

00:00:29.152 --> 00:00:39.773
Pam has developed her own style of music that the fans call Pam Music, so we're going to be talking to her about what that is and everything that she's been up to.

00:00:39.773 --> 00:00:42.387
So, pam, thank you so much for joining me today.

00:00:42.600 --> 00:00:43.505
Thank you for having me.

00:00:44.301 --> 00:00:46.829
Why don't you start off by telling everybody a little bit about yourself?

00:00:48.264 --> 00:00:49.539
Oh gee, I don't know.

00:00:49.539 --> 00:00:52.389
Go to PamRossMusiccom and you can learn it all.

00:00:52.389 --> 00:00:59.948
Yeah, I'm a songwriter and I was born in Pittsburgh.

00:00:59.948 --> 00:01:05.649
I spent most of my life in Houston and I currently live in North Carolina.

00:01:05.649 --> 00:01:08.427
I travel to Nashville a lot and play there.

00:01:08.427 --> 00:01:11.844
That's really my favorite place to play, but I play all over the place.

00:01:11.844 --> 00:01:19.570
My music is a mix of different genres country rock, americana, folk, blues, pop.

00:01:19.570 --> 00:01:23.864
Throw it all in there and mix it up and see what comes out.

00:01:26.748 --> 00:01:27.769
Absolutely so.

00:01:27.769 --> 00:01:33.896
If, if someone asks you what, what kind of, what genre of music you play, what would you tell them?

00:01:33.896 --> 00:01:38.665
Depends on what song you're listening to.

00:01:38.665 --> 00:01:39.746
Yeah, that's a great answer.

00:01:40.569 --> 00:01:41.290
That's the truth.

00:01:41.290 --> 00:01:42.692
I mean the song that's out right now.

00:01:42.692 --> 00:01:48.828
I'd put that in country, but my next song that's going to be coming out in May, that's a pop rock song.

00:01:48.828 --> 00:01:52.433
So really it depends on the song you're listening to.

00:01:53.560 --> 00:01:58.224
All right, well, tell us what got you into music.

00:01:58.245 --> 00:02:01.149
I always wanted to do it.

00:02:01.149 --> 00:02:02.971
It's my earliest memories.

00:02:02.971 --> 00:02:07.436
You know, just a little kid I'd be making up songs.

00:02:07.436 --> 00:02:15.240
You know they probably didn't mean anything, but I was making them up.

00:02:20.210 --> 00:02:22.960
And it's just, you know, it's just something that's always been in me.

00:02:27.105 --> 00:02:28.633
OK, well, who are some of your biggest musical influences?

00:02:28.633 --> 00:02:29.538
Who influences you to do what you do?

00:02:29.538 --> 00:02:48.741
You know that's a wide gamut, a lot of different people, and that's probably why my music is the way it is.

00:02:48.741 --> 00:02:51.887
I mean, I've been influenced by everyone from Elton John, dolly Parton, johnny Cash to, you know, nirvana, the Foo Fighters, metallica, van Halen.

00:02:51.887 --> 00:02:58.842
You know the Pretenders, rem a lot of different people, okay what tell the listeners about?

00:02:59.584 --> 00:03:09.568
you know you kind of mentioned your song in May, but but you know, tell us about your upcoming projects that you're working on, that we need to be aware of, and tell us all about it and what inspired it.

00:03:10.661 --> 00:03:31.508
Well, I'm currently releasing my second album called Outside the Box, and I release one song about every two and a half three months and right now we're on the third song and it's called Tonight, which you can go online anywhere, all the platforms it's out there.

00:03:31.508 --> 00:03:46.407
And my next single is called have a Good Time and it's going to be coming out in mid-May and I'll just continually be releasing songs all year long and playing.

00:03:46.407 --> 00:03:49.772
I'll be playing a few shows around the Raleigh area.

00:03:49.772 --> 00:03:50.655
I head to Nashville.

00:03:50.655 --> 00:03:56.106
I think in the end of May I'll be heading back up there for a while.

00:04:09.066 --> 00:04:15.852
And you know who knows where else I've had the privilege to work with and some of the artists that you hope to work with someday.

00:04:18.314 --> 00:04:24.182
My lead guitarist is named Ivan Pettit and I'm hoping that's how you pronounce his last name.

00:04:24.182 --> 00:04:38.369
He lives in Canada, actually, and it was just by a stroke of luck that I got introduced to him and he's played on both of my albums and, yeah, I'm just very privileged to get to work with him.

00:04:38.369 --> 00:04:39.576
He's an amazing guitarist.

00:04:39.576 --> 00:04:46.454
He's actually kind of famous up there in Canada and it was great working with me.

00:04:46.454 --> 00:04:49.605
It's just so easy to work with, you know, and we did the whole thing.

00:04:49.956 --> 00:05:03.418
Um, as far as guitar work, you know me living down here down South and him being up in Canada just doing it, uh, and then coming to you know he'd send me tracks and I'd listen and I'd be like, ah, let's do this or let's do that.

00:05:03.817 --> 00:05:13.043
And then, um, I was really lucky to get to work with Mark Frigo in Nashville and he did all the mixing and mastering and he just did an amazing job.

00:05:13.043 --> 00:05:27.781
And he heard my first album and he reached out to me on Instagram and I went and vetted him out and he's worked for a lot of the big record labels in Nashville mixing and he's mixed for some of the greats.

00:05:27.781 --> 00:05:31.862
I mean, like he's mixed for Dolly Parton, willie nelson, people like that.

00:05:31.862 --> 00:05:41.050
Uh, you know indigo girls like really across the gamut, and so, um, he had struck out on his own and he was looking for clients.

00:05:41.050 --> 00:05:46.048
So I was like, yeah, sure, as soon as I make my start making my second album, I'll get in touch with you, which I did.

00:05:46.048 --> 00:05:53.827
And, uh, he just did a phenomenal job, so, definitely, you know, be keeping him for any future projects that I do.

00:05:53.827 --> 00:06:02.425
And yeah, so those are two of the people I've been very fortunate to work with.
