> Curveball>Welcome, um, to the Living the Dream podcast with Curveball. Um, if you believe you can achieve Chee Chee.
00:00:18.774 --> 00:00:35.347
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Welcome to the living the Dream with Curveball podcast, a show where I interview guests that teach, motivate, and inspired. Today, straight from Ferguson, Missouri, I am joined by Peter Price. He is a singer songwriter.
00:00:35.435 --> 00:00:56.055
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>He's doing his own thing, and he also is the leader, the lead guitarist for the Fries band. He's been doing that for about 30 years. So we're going to be talking to him about his story and what he does with the Fries band and say he's got a new project coming out, so we going to get into that as well. His own solo project. So, Peter, thank you so much for joining me today.
00:00:56.159 --> 00:00:56.944
> Peter Price>It's my pleasure.
00:00:56.984 --> 00:01:00.695
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Curtis, why don't you start off by telling everybody a little bit about yourself?
00:01:00.799 --> 00:02:13.695
> Peter Price>Okay. Well, I was born in Ferguson, Missouri, and lived there for the first five years of my life. And then my family moved to Dayton, Ohio. And so in my early adult life, I, uh, moved out to Denver and I lived out there for about 14 years and wound up making my way back to Ohio and have been here ever since. Just always, um, been involved in music. My father was an episcopal minister. M and I was pretty rambunctious kid, so he got me into all kinds of activities that would kind of keep me out of trouble. And one of the things that he got me into was singing in the church choir. And I found out that I had a voice. And so I got, got some solos. And then in junior high, I joined my first band and been in bands off and on ever since, but solid for the last, oh, 35 years now. And Covid rolled around and, you know, we couldn't go out and perform anymore. The band I play in is called the Fries Band. And the Fries band is basically a cover band. We do all kinds of, uh, other musicians music. So when Covid hit, I started writing my own stuff a lot more. I concentrated more on that.
00:02:13.810 --> 00:02:33.740
> Peter Price>And, uh, I, uh, uh, went ahead and put together enough material to record, um, an album and went down to Nashville and recorded eight songs down there and then recorded, uh, four songs with, um, the heroes that I had in Dayton, Ohio, of musicians that just are kind of around.
00:02:33.812 --> 00:02:42.253
> Peter Price>We've got a great music scene in Dayton. So I put out this twelve song album called Department of the Interior. And it's done really, really well.
00:02:42.449 --> 00:03:07.454
> Peter Price>Uh, and, you know, really exceeded my expectations by quite a big margin. So I decided, I'm having so much fun, I'm going to put out another album. So I've been working on album number two, and I haven't titled it yet, but we're in the process of doing all the tracking, all the recording of the different instruments right now. All the songs are written, and so, you know, I'm just kind of living the dream.
00:03:08.123 --> 00:03:10.955
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Well, tell us the Friars band.
00:03:11.060 --> 00:03:14.003
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Tell us about the genre of music you do.
00:03:14.084 --> 00:03:24.740
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>And I see that in your bio. You guys have opened up for some amazing people. So tell us about some of the people the fries band has had the privilege to open up, for sure.
00:03:24.740 --> 00:03:38.247
> Peter Price>Um, well, the Frys band is basically a vocal band. We all play instruments. We have drums, keyboard, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, which is what I play, and bass.
00:03:38.415 --> 00:03:47.096
> Peter Price>And everybody in the band sings. So we do, you know, three, four, and five part harmony on all the songs that we sing.
00:03:47.159 --> 00:04:10.858
> Peter Price>I'm, um, not barbershop quartet type harmony, but, you know, more contemporary stuff. And, uh, we play, you know, Beatles, eagles, uh, America, uh, you know, just. Just all the popular music that was really from the seventies, sixties, and eighties up into, uh, you know, the two thousands. So it's been great.
00:04:10.906 --> 00:04:22.041
> Peter Price>I've played with the fries for over 30 years now and just been a lot of fun, a bunch of good guys and great musicians. So, uh, we, uh, are having a busy summer.
00:04:22.218 --> 00:04:29.406
> Peter Price>We play a lot of festivals, a lot of outdoor festivals, community concerts, that sort of thing.
00:04:29.470 --> 00:04:33.153
> Peter Price>And, uh, so we're right in the middle of our busy season right now.
00:04:34.733 --> 00:04:42.197
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay. And you've opened for people like Gladys Knight and the Pips and Tina McBride. So tell us what that was like.
00:04:42.365 --> 00:04:55.685
> Peter Price>Well, it was great. We've opened for the guess who and, uh, Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac, uh, foghat, just. Just a number of different national, uh, acts.
00:04:55.750 --> 00:05:23.014
> Peter Price>And, uh, it's been great. We, uh, you know, get a chance to perform for a wider audience and expose those people to our music. And so it, you know, and Gladys Knight was, you know, she was wonderful to work with, and same with Martina McBride. M so, you know, we've been very fortunate that we've gotten a chance to, uh, work with some very, very famous and professional people.
00:05:24.673 --> 00:05:36.814
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>So we know what kind of genres your fries band does. On a solo tip, do you do the same genre of music, or what kind of music do you do when you do your solo thing?
00:05:37.060 --> 00:06:04.254
> Peter Price>Uh, I do, uh, somewhat the same, but my music would probably be considered americana, which sort of encompasses a lot of different styles of music. It encompasses blues. It encompasses rock, folk, uh, even, you know, toward the country side of things as well. So it. It's kind of a catch all genre for a number of different styles.
00:06:06.074 --> 00:06:13.577
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well, talk about some of your biggest influences that influence you over the years to do what you do.
00:06:13.745 --> 00:06:22.504
> Peter Price>Well, of course, um, you know, anybody who's my age was heavily influenced by the Beatles, and certainly I was, too.
00:06:23.043 --> 00:07:37.233
> Peter Price>I'm old enough to remember when they appeared on Ed Sullivan. And, you know, it kind of changed my world. I decided at that point that I wanted to, uh, be a musician and, you know, maybe not do it full time, but at least, uh, you know, learn how to play an instrument. And I already knew how to sing, so it wasn't, it wasn't too long after that that I joined my first band. And of course, everybody else was swept up into it, too. And then once I moved on from that, my first bands, uh, I was the lead singer and the front man, and I wasn't playing an instrument at that point. I had played trumpet in band in grade school, but I picked up the guitar and started learning how to play the guitar and started playing a lot of music by Bob Dylan and Neil Young. And, you know, those singer songwriters that basically wrote about stuff that mattered, their lyrics told a story or they created some sort of movement for social change. And I found that, uh, that was really, really important to me.
00:07:37.413 --> 00:08:08.423
> Peter Price>And so whenever I tried to write a song and write song lyrics, I tried to make those songs mean something so that if people really wanted to listen to the lyrics, they might be able to, you know, get something out of, out of the song. My songs have always had a message to them, and, you know, if people are, you know, really good listeners, they're going to find out that there's a lot of different layers to, to my music. It is not just a pretty song, but it, if you dig down into it, it means something.
00:08:09.564 --> 00:08:19.504
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>So I know that you've had the privilege to open for a lot of big artists or big people. Uh, do you have any dream people that one day want to open up for you you haven't already?
00:08:20.004 --> 00:08:21.624
> Peter Price>Wow, that's a great question.
00:08:24.564 --> 00:09:28.134
> Peter Price>Dan, uh, Fogelberg would have been one of them that I would have loved to open up for, but unfortunately, he is gone now. M and I don't know how many of your listeners remember Dan Fogelberg, but he was an amazing singer songwriter. People like Jackson Brown, any, um, James Taylor, uh, the Eagles. Those are sort of like moonshot kind of people to open for in my position, but we just got done opening. My original band called the Price Brothers, this past Saturday, um, opened for an up and coming rock blues guitarist named Hannah Wickland at our local Levitt Pavilion. Um, and so that was. That was really a cool night for us. We, you know, definitely loved that. But, yeah, I would say James Taylor and, you know, the Eagles and, you know, people like that would just be amazing to open up for Jackson Brown, of course.
00:09:28.953 --> 00:09:38.498
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Well, you were telling me in the green room about an upcoming project that you're working on that the listeners need to know about. So tell them about it and tell them what inspired it.
00:09:38.586 --> 00:10:04.426
> Peter Price>Okay. Well, I had so much success with my first album, Department of the interior, that, um, and I was having so much fun with creating music and working with musicians here in Dayton that I decided to follow, uh, that up with album number two. And I haven't thought of a title. You know, I have a couple of ideas, but I haven't really settled on a title for it yet.
00:10:04.490 --> 00:10:29.977
> Peter Price>But it's going to be somewhere between eleven and twelve songs. And I've written probably, I don't know, 16 or 17 that I'm trying to work down into, you know, the strongest eleven or twelve. And we are in the process of tracking that right now. We've got, uh, uh, the bass and the drumstown. And I'm getting ready to, you know, get into the box and, uh, do, uh, the acoustic guitar.
00:10:30.145 --> 00:11:08.163
> Peter Price>And then we'll bring in lead guitar and, uh, keys and, you know, specialty percussion and then, you know, vocals, harmonies, and, um, probably have it done by somewhere around the end of the year. And we should have individual songs done before that. So my plan is to start releasing singles probably along around November of this year with the intention of having the full album completely done and ready to release by probably the end of the first quarter, you know, April, May of, uh, 20, uh, 24.
00:11:08.984 --> 00:11:11.244
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Get into the box. I like that.
00:11:11.703 --> 00:11:14.648
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>So listeners can keep up with everything that you're up to.

00:11:46.354 --> 00:11:54.322
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>All right, close us out with some final thoughts. Maybe if that was something that I forgot to talk about that you would like to touch on or just any final thoughts you have for the listeners.
00:11:54.457 --> 00:12:39.453
> Peter Price>Sure. You know, I think that life is a journey and that we are lifelong learners. Um, uh, if we are open and humble enough to receive the messages that come to us every day. I think we can make ourselves better people. My songs are written so that if, if a searcher is trying to make a better person out of themselves, there are clues in my songs. They're not only good to listen to, but there's a lot of good stuff in those songs. So, um, Department of the Interior is my first album, and, uh, you know, I would hope that your listeners would, you know, go to my website and, uh, you know, check out the music because they can find it right there.
