00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:54.039
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Welcome to the Living the Dream podcast with Curveball. if you believe you can achieve. Welcome to the Living the Dream with Curveball podcast, a show where I interview guests that teach, motivate and inspire. Today I am joined by bestselling ghostwriter TL Champion. TL calls herself the legacy ghostwriter because she helps people generate and create stories for not only this generation, but generations to come. So we're going to be talking to her about what she does and you know, if any, any of, you writers out there are interested in a ghostwriter, this is the person to call. So, TL thank you so much for joining me.

00:00:54.439 --> 00:00:56.359
> TL Champion>Thank you, Curtis. Thank you for having me.

00:00:56.840 --> 00:00:59.880
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Why don't you start off by telling everybody a little bit about yourself?

00:01:01.399 --> 00:01:28.790
> TL Champion>Well, again, my name is TL Champion. I'm a best selling ghost writer. I absolutely love working with writers. I think writers are just some of the best people in the world. They either want to educate or inspire, inspire or entertain people with their stories. and they usually have great stories to tell. So I have a lot of fun working with them and I'm very blessed in that way.

00:01:29.909 --> 00:01:34.390
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>For those who are not aware, explain to the listeners what a ghostwriter is.

00:01:36.230 --> 00:02:07.989
> TL Champion>Well, if you want to write a book but you don't have the time or maybe even the skill set, you can hire somebody to write your book for you. Your name still goes on the front cover of the book as the author. And that's where the ghost part comes in that they don't. Nobody has to know that you're working with a ghostwriter. And basically they do all the work and you get all the credit.

00:02:11.759 --> 00:02:21.879
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>So let's say I wanted to write a book and I called you. Explain to the listeners, you know, kind of how the behind the scenes process, would go.

00:02:22.840 --> 00:03:38.080
> TL Champion>Yeah, so the process starts with a, lot of interviews over one to two months time. what I usually do is like an hour a week for a month or two hours a week for a month to help me get the basics of the story down. And that's sort of a phase one or those interviews. And then phase two is, you know, the ghostwriters just writing like crazy. I like to crank out, the first chapter, make sure I'm on the, on the right track. And then I usually write about three chapters a week. And you can finish a book, depending on how big it is, 100, 150 page book, you might figure you might finish that in three, four, five months. But as you get into the 200 and 300 pages. Obviously there's more time involved with that. And, I always hire a professional editor because I don't consider myself a professional editor. And then we can design the book cover and upload it to Amazon for you. And then with Amazon, of course, you get international exposure.

00:03:41.199 --> 00:03:49.599
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Well, when working with a ghostwriter, how does one decide whether their legacy will be captured as fiction or nonfiction?

00:03:51.770 --> 00:04:42.790
> TL Champion>Well, yeah, that's, that's a conversation that you would want to have with your ghostwriter because a lot of, early on, because a lot of people believe they have a great story, but they don't want to include their own name or their kids names or their spouses names or brothers and sisters and that type of thing. And if, if that's the case, you might want to use a pen name for yourself and then use fictional names for your, the loved ones that, you know, don't want to be mentioned by name. So, that's why you see a lot of movies. One of the first slides is based on a true story is because it's not 100% true, but it's based on a true story or inspired by a true story. So that's kind of how we do it.

00:04:45.610 --> 00:04:57.220
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>So if, let's talk about some of the benefits of working with a ghostwriter. And if someone is looking for a ghostwriter, what should they look for in a ghostwriter?

00:04:59.060 --> 00:05:50.029
> TL Champion>Well, you would want to find somebody in your specific genre. some people only write nonfiction, so self help books, biographies, autobiographies, that type of thing. And then other people love to write fiction. And you can turn a memoir into fiction. I do that with my four of my clients all the time. or you want to write a novel, the great American novel. Right. So you have this wonderful story about, forest nymphs or something. And, or it's a children's book or it's a talking animal or, you know, you can do an awful lot with fiction to make it, really fun. So you just want to do a good job of interviewing them to see what they're comfortable doing and make sure it aligns with what you're looking for.

00:05:53.310 --> 00:06:06.819
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well, I guess, you can give a ballpark figure on this. But if somebody was wanting, to use a ghostwriter, what, what are kind of like the, the cost of doing that. How much would it cost?

00:06:08.339 --> 00:07:29.500
> TL Champion>Well, there's really a range. I would say if you go online and Google it, I've seen a lot of articles. You don't want to hire anybody for under$20,000 to do some of the smaller books. Because if somebody's charging 10,000 for example to do 100 page book, they aren't necessarily a professional and they're going to be sort of learning at your expense. They're in the learning mod. If you want an experienced professional who can really help you make a lot of important decisions along the way, 100 page book might start at that 20,000 figure. And then I would say most books fall into probably the 30, $40,000 figure, unless you're a celebrity. And those ghostwriters can charge more because they work with celebrities and they have a lot of contacts. So it's really quite a range and it depends on how many pages. a 300 page book obviously is going to cost a lot more than a 100 page book. So those are some of the considerations.

00:07:31.079 --> 00:07:42.040
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Well, can you talk about your experiences or maybe some of the people that you've had the opportunity to ghostwrite for because you are a best selling ghostwriter?

00:07:44.040 --> 00:08:18.300
> TL Champion>Yes. well, the last time I spoke to you on the phone we mentioned that I wrote a book for regarding the philosophies of a popular hip hop artist who opened for top musicians in this industry, yet he couldn't pay his bills. And he came in as a number one best selling author with his book. And I actually spoke to him yesterday and he's open to me mentioning his name and the name of his book if you want some more specifics.

00:08:19.129 --> 00:08:24.420
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>yeah, go ahead and do it. We're all about putting people out there and listeners can go check out his book.

00:08:24.910 --> 00:08:46.360
> TL Champion>Yeah, he's a great, he's a great guy. I worked with him, more of a coaching aspect. So I tweaked some of what he did. And his book is called the empowerment. Change your perspective, find your power. and the gentleman's name is Toby Braswell.

00:08:47.559 --> 00:09:17.269
> TL Champion>And Toby was a career musician and performer and chased that dream for 13 years with his hip hop group called e dot com. He felt invisible on stage and shared the bill with legendary acts like Public Enemy, Little, Kim, Let me see the Fugees and even the Black Eyed Peas. And you know, he lived for, for getting up on stage and singing.

00:09:17.429 --> 00:10:15.720
> TL Champion>But offstage he realized music was, was feeding his soul but not his family. So the bill started to p and the life he imagined for himself was seemingly out of reach. So something had to change. And that's when he decided that his plan A needed to turn into a Plan B so that he would use it as more of a hobby and then opened his own business, as his plan A. And a lot of what he learned he uses in the empowerment cords, to help young people, new entrepreneurs, does a bit of coaching to help people figure out what's going to work best for them. You know, sort of that second act or, or changing your direction in life because maybe something isn't working and it's time for a change.

00:10:19.500 --> 00:10:32.059
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well let's talk about your biggest influences. You know, who, who influences you to do what you do, you know, if you have any favorite authors or anything like that.

00:10:34.899 --> 00:10:57.219
> TL Champion>you know, I would say my biggest influence is, is really my muse, which sort of lives in my head. I, I am a super creative person and I'm always thinking of creative projects and I love working on my client projects, but I have a few of my own.

00:10:57.219 --> 00:11:10.820
> TL Champion>I'll probably be publishing a book in 2026, but I'm not quite there yet. I watch a lot of TV and Netflix and prime and get ideas from that as well.

00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:30.259
> TL Champion>I love going to the movies. So I think because I write all day and I mean doing that close up work on the computer at night I like to, in the evenings and weekends I like to go to the movies or you know, watch TV and that, that those are some of my biggest influences really are the movies.

00:11:32.740 --> 00:11:39.470
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Tell us about besides your book, tell us about any other upcoming projects that you're working on that listeners need to be aware of.

00:11:41.639 --> 00:11:58.649
> TL Champion>Well, I have an awesome book coming up that a client of mine finished. we finished and it's in the editing, editing process and it should be published next month in November that I'm I'm super excited about and he's super excited about.

00:11:58.889 --> 00:12:47.840
> TL Champion>And it's a, it's a psychological thriller detailing the adventures of a loyal employee who worked for a company that tried to kill him because he knew too much. I don't really want to say much more than that at this point because it hasn't even been published yet. But that's going to be an exciting one that's going to be coming out in the next month. And one of the things you have to remember as an author is you need to, sure you can hire a ghostwriter and that's part of your budget, but you always have to have some budget ready for marketing and promoting the book. And he's going to be doing a good job on that. So I believe it'll be well received and it'll be a very popular book.

00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:56.480
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, well, so listeners can keep up with everything that you're up to and going to be up to throw out your contact info.

00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:11.740
> TL Champion>Well, my website is, legacy-ghostwriter.com and I'm also on LinkedIn, and those are, those are really the best places to find me.

00:13:13.659 --> 00:13:21.259
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>Okay, we'll close this out with some final thoughts. Maybe if there was something I forgot to talk about that you would like to touch on or any final thoughts you have for the listeners.

00:13:25.500 --> 00:13:31.419
> TL Champion>Think. I don't think so. I think we covered everything. Curtis, I want to thank you for having me out today.

00:13:33.250 --> 00:13:53.360

00:13:58.950 --> 00:14:01.269
> Curtis Jackson (also known as DJ Curveball)>So that's a good way to sum it up.

> TL Champion>Including my father and his father before him. So, I was lucky that I was born with that name.
