WEBVTT

00:00:00.420 --> 00:00:08.330
Welcome to the Living the Dream Podcast with Curveball, if you believe you can achieve.

00:00:08.330 --> 00:00:28.693
Welcome to the Living the Dream with Curveball Podcast, a show where I interview guests that teach, motivate and inspire.

00:00:28.693 --> 00:00:38.274
Today, we're going to be talking about Social Security and Medicaid, as I am joined by writer and podcaster Devin Wieters.

00:00:38.274 --> 00:00:49.320
Devin is in college, she is disabled with CP, and she has a podcast that we're going to be talking to her about.

00:00:49.320 --> 00:01:04.864
She is advocating for the ssi restoration act and the ssi savings act, so we're going to be talking to her about everything that she's up to and how those two acts would help disabled people.

00:01:04.864 --> 00:01:08.266
So, devin, thank you so much for joining me today.

00:01:08.287 --> 00:01:09.587
Hi, thank you for having me.

00:01:10.427 --> 00:01:13.109
Why don't you start off by telling everybody a little bit about yourself?

00:01:13.590 --> 00:01:17.352
So, as you said, my name's Devin, I'm 29.

00:01:17.352 --> 00:01:29.629
I have graduated from college, from Christopher Newport University, go Captains, with a degree in uh, communication, uh and um.

00:01:29.629 --> 00:01:50.007
I've really struggled to find a job out of college because of my disability and the, the way the Medicaid and social security is set up, which we'll talk about later um and so, and so I just podcast and advocate, for free, basically, and I love it.

00:01:50.007 --> 00:01:56.368
So I wish I was getting paid money to do this, but you know I love doing it.

00:01:57.600 --> 00:02:00.510
And yeah, I just do this for free.

00:02:00.510 --> 00:02:06.165
I wish I was making a little bit more money to do it, and I hope to be one day, but right now I'm doing this for free.

00:02:06.165 --> 00:02:12.764
I wish I was making a little bit more money to do it and I hope to be one day, but right now I'm doing this for free and I'm a super fan of the show Survivor and yeah, that's all you need to know.

00:02:12.764 --> 00:02:16.032
So so, pretty much all you need to know.

00:02:18.159 --> 00:02:19.443
Well, well, let's talk about.

00:02:19.443 --> 00:02:27.510
You know your disability, you say when we were in the green room you were talking about how it's harder to live with the stigma.

00:02:27.510 --> 00:02:33.546
It's harder to live with the stigma of your disability versus living with the actual disability.

00:02:33.546 --> 00:02:35.312
So explain to listeners what that means.

00:02:36.562 --> 00:02:54.860
So basically, it's very hard to emotionally I guess emotionally draining we'll say to emotionally, I guess emotionally draining, we'll say to explain to people that, yes, I am cognitively normal even though I'm in a wheelchair.

00:02:54.860 --> 00:02:58.764
Yes, I can talk, yes, I can do all this.

00:02:58.764 --> 00:03:03.931
Just because I'm in a wheelchair, you don't need to make, you know, crazy assumptions about me.

00:03:03.931 --> 00:03:21.949
And I think a lot of the stigma that, oh, people with disabilities like don't want to work, they can't work, has contributed to the way A lot of that is.

00:03:21.949 --> 00:03:28.396
Just, it was the stigma that people with disabilities can't contribute as much as able-bodied people.

00:03:28.396 --> 00:03:35.513
That contributes to the way the Social Security and Medicaid is set up.

00:03:35.513 --> 00:03:41.774
And let me just say off the top that I live in the best state in the union for Medicaid.

00:03:41.774 --> 00:03:50.144
So shout out, wynne Youngkin union for Medicaid, so shout out when you're in.

00:03:50.144 --> 00:03:54.070
And the social, the people that work at social security are awesome Most of them.

00:03:54.070 --> 00:03:56.475
It's just the walls for social security that aren't awesome.

00:03:56.475 --> 00:03:58.402
So okay.

00:03:58.423 --> 00:04:00.486
Well, let's talk about Medicaid waivers.

00:04:00.486 --> 00:04:04.213
Explain to listeners what Medicaid waivers are.

00:04:04.895 --> 00:04:25.449
So Medicaid waivers are something that people with who qualify, people with disabilities that qualify, based both Anyway, never mind People with disabilities that qualify, that's the easier way to explain can get in addition to the Medicaid insurance that we all know about.

00:04:25.449 --> 00:04:32.728
That helps them pay for a personal caregiver that they hire and pay them for the state.

00:04:32.728 --> 00:04:39.846
Some of them help you get different equipment that Medicaid doesn't normally cover.

00:04:39.846 --> 00:04:44.093
Some offer behavior supports.

00:04:44.093 --> 00:04:57.826
Different waivers offer different things depending on what waiver you're on, but basically they provide the essentials that people with disabilities need to live in their communities every day.

00:05:01.310 --> 00:05:25.343
Okay, well, you know you're very passionate about the SSI Restoration Act and SSI Savings Act, so tell us what those two acts are, what they would do and why you're so passionate about them in the majority of cases, like in 99% of cases.

00:05:25.904 --> 00:05:31.408
So basically, if you lose your Social Security, you also lose your Medicare and Medicaid.

00:05:31.408 --> 00:05:43.399
And right now the asset limit for Social Security is $2,000 for singles and $3,000 for couples, so not even double what it is for singles.

00:05:43.399 --> 00:06:07.127
Which inevitably means if you work at all, then you're liable to have your benefits cut and you can't possibly work full time, because then you're inevitably make too much to qualify for the waiver but not enough to pay for it out of pocket.

00:06:07.127 --> 00:06:10.019
So it leaves you in kind of a sticky situation.

00:06:10.019 --> 00:06:29.564
And so what?

00:06:29.564 --> 00:06:46.504
The SSI for couples and the SSI Restoration Act would eliminate the marriage penalty, which is where they count the spouse's income against you, whether or not you're legally married, even if you just live together.

00:06:46.504 --> 00:06:49.915
So that's the basics.

00:06:50.937 --> 00:06:57.692
When do you feel like these acts are going to be going through or going up to try to get past?

00:06:58.372 --> 00:07:04.521
Well, that's funny that you should ask, because there's a guy named Raul.

00:07:04.521 --> 00:07:20.355
He's a, I bet his first name, his first name is Raul and uh, uh, sorry, I have a mild speech impediment so I might not be pronouncing that all the way correctly, and I can't even pronounce his last name because it's just too hard.

00:07:20.355 --> 00:07:22.259
Uh, his Instagram.

00:07:22.259 --> 00:07:26.805
His Instagram is Dan, with Raul, if you want to look him up R-A-U-L.

00:07:26.805 --> 00:07:46.057
And this guy God bless him is one of the main authors of this bill and he keeps reintroducing it every year and it goes through the first committee, I guess, or whatever it is, and nothing ever gets done with it.

00:07:46.057 --> 00:07:53.583
So that is why I am on here trying to change that.

00:07:53.944 --> 00:07:57.220
Okay, well, you was telling me about Patrice.

00:07:57.220 --> 00:07:58.875
It's a movie on Hulu.

00:07:58.875 --> 00:08:01.538
You said you felt like everybody should watch it.

00:08:01.538 --> 00:08:04.959
Explain to us why and what the movie is about.

00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:06.079
You know kind of tease people with it.

00:08:06.079 --> 00:08:06.339
Make them watch it.

00:08:06.339 --> 00:08:07.016
Explain to us why and what the movie's about.

00:08:07.016 --> 00:08:07.658
You know kind of tease people with it.

00:08:07.613 --> 00:08:14.052
Make them go watch it, first of all, if you are looking for a laugh, if you like comedies, it's hilarious.

00:08:14.052 --> 00:08:15.658
So it's not going to be.

00:08:15.658 --> 00:08:16.259
Woe is me.

00:08:16.259 --> 00:08:22.499
I mean, there are some tough moments in there too, but it's mostly a comedy, so you will literally pee your pants laughing.

00:08:22.499 --> 00:08:30.822
And what it is is it's a documentary, a comedy documentary about.

00:08:30.822 --> 00:08:45.405
It's all real about A couple that wants to live together and get married and they both have disabilities, but they can't because of the way the waivers are set up.

00:08:45.405 --> 00:08:48.154
They both have disabilities, but they can't because of the way the waivers are set up.

00:08:48.154 --> 00:08:53.586
So it's basically about their struggle to live a normal life, basically, and their fight to get these laws passed.

00:08:54.870 --> 00:08:58.876
OK, well, you're also a survivor fan, so you know kind of tell us about that.

00:08:59.629 --> 00:09:07.985
So I have had a sometimes unhealthy obsession with survivors since I was about eight years old.

00:09:07.985 --> 00:09:15.352
Um, I just thought that it's that they do everything they can to make uh it a level playing field.

00:09:15.352 --> 00:09:19.826
They had, um, a guy with uh on season 43 of the show.

00:09:19.826 --> 00:09:34.778
I'm actually friends with the winner of that season, which still sounds crazy coming out of my mouth but on season 43 of that show they had an above-the-knee MPT and a guy with mild CP and they just did amazing.

00:09:34.778 --> 00:09:43.611
So you know, it's always been inclusive of people with disabilities way before it was cool and it started being talked about.

00:09:43.611 --> 00:09:45.312
So that's why I love Zoom.

00:09:45.312 --> 00:09:47.775
I love it so much.

00:09:49.650 --> 00:09:54.255
Another thing that you love is a book that Vice President JD Vance wrote.

00:09:54.255 --> 00:10:17.094
So you know kind of explain to us that book, you know what it's about and what caught your attention so much about it agree, but I personally think that JD Vance has the best sense of humor.

00:10:17.115 --> 00:10:17.414
Oh my gosh, he's.

00:10:17.414 --> 00:10:25.938
I personally think he's hilarious, um, but what I what I love about the book is he makes the same exact argument that I'm making about welfare.

00:10:25.938 --> 00:10:38.325
Um, because he grew up with his uh grandmother down in Appalachia and, um, that course, that's the area of the country that's very poor a lot of the times.

00:10:38.325 --> 00:10:59.298
And he makes the argument in the book that I'm making here that basically, the people that really need the welfare are penalized the most, because it leaves you with if you make any money at all or try to go to work, especially full-time.

00:10:59.298 --> 00:11:08.875
It leaves you with, uh, not making too much to qualify for the, for the waiver, but not enough to pay for it out of pocket.

00:11:08.875 --> 00:11:24.499
So I really resonated with that part of it, obviously, and I really resonated with how hard he had to fight, like the bureaucracy, and so that's why I tell everybody to read it.

00:11:25.140 --> 00:11:27.336
Okay, tell us about your podcast.

00:11:28.311 --> 00:11:30.499
So my podcast is called Real.

00:11:30.499 --> 00:11:35.301
With it, and basically anybody that I find fascinating I have on.

00:11:35.301 --> 00:11:49.363
So we've had spiritual readers, other people with disabilities, obviously, uh, business people, uh, anybody with a fascinating story, uh, especially those that have overcome obstacles.

00:11:49.363 --> 00:12:00.620
That's who I have on, so you can find it on all podcasting platforms and YouTube, or you can go to realwithitcom and find out more about it there.

00:12:00.620 --> 00:12:04.629
Uh, we, we release new episodes every other Monday.

So, um, if you would like to help us out and subscribe, you can go to realwithitcom slash subscribe, so it'll be right there in your feed of podcast app of choice and you never miss an episode.

00:12:45.303 --> 00:12:48.813

If you go to wewithitcom slash reforms, you can learn more about our reforms advocacy and find out more about what needs to be changed.

00:13:01.950 --> 00:13:29.087
If you go to realwithitcom slash Patrice, it will take you to the Patrice the movie website and once you're there, you can click on Take Action and it will give you a form to fill out where you can write to your representatives to say you support the SSI Restoration Act and the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act.

00:13:31.753 --> 00:13:44.234
So I would encourage everybody to do that and I know everybody's on the one bill train right now, but we need both of them passed, ideally, in case one gets overturned in a court or something.

00:13:44.234 --> 00:13:45.572
We still have another one.

00:13:45.572 --> 00:13:53.753
So I would like to ideally see both of them passed so you can write to representatives about that.

00:13:53.753 --> 00:14:10.900
And be sure to follow me on my podcast and social media at we're with a pod and I'm on instagram and instagram at devin readers, facebook at devin e readers and on my personal twitter account I post about politics.

00:14:23.982 --> 00:14:25.004

All right, that was my next question, the contact info.

00:14:29.076 --> 00:14:31.182
So close us out with some final thoughts.

00:14:31.182 --> 00:14:36.163
Maybe, if that was something I forgot to talk about, that you would like to touch on, or any final thoughts you have for the listeners.

00:14:36.870 --> 00:14:38.274
So one.
