#12 Tener: Learn "To Have" in Spanish | Learn Spanish Podcast

In this episode, Roy and Ania cover the irregular verb tener, meaning to have. Ania walks Roy through the present tense forms: tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, and tienen, then explains that tener is used to talk about possessions. They work through a range of practical examples, including tengo una tarta en la mesa (I have a cake on the table), tienes el móvil roto (your phone is broken), tengo unas gafas de sol (I have sunglasses), tiene dos gatos (he/she has two cats), tienes mucho dinero (you have a lot of money), tenemos frío (we are cold), and tienen deberes (they have chores), before Roy finishes by translating tengo dinero and no tengo el móvil on his own.

🇪🇸 Perfect for: Beginners ready to learn how to talk about possessions and a few common idiomatic uses of tener in Spanish.

12 Tener (To Have)

Bienvenidos a Learn Spanish Podcast. Pueden encontrar todas nuestras episodios en learnspanishpodcast.org Hola Anya, ¿cómo estás? Hola, ¿cómo estás? Yo bien, yo estoy bien, bastante bien. ¿Y tú? Bien, gracias.

Gracias. Okay, so, another verb, as you can see. Today, different one.

We are learning about the Spanish verb tener. It's also very important. And firstly, you will learn how to change it and when to use it.

So, as always, firstly, you will learn and you will read the forms, present forms. Tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen. It's irregular verb.

Tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen. Okay, and it's to have. Okay, so, we have the example with tarta otra vez.

Could you read? Tengo una tarta en la mesa. Sí, tengo una tarta en la mesa. I think you should... The tartar is on the table.

No, no, that's not estar, es tener. I have the... I have a tartar on my table. I have a tartar on my table.

Tengo una tarta en la mesa. Okay. And when we use it, possessions.

That's the only word I can say. Possessions. I have, you have, that's possessions.

Okay, we have more examples. So, you will read them and you will try to translate them. Okay, tienes el móvil roto.

Is móvil a mobile? No, the phone. Yeah, yeah, mobile phone, yeah. And roto, I don't know.

Doesn't work. No funciona, doesn't work. Okay, the phone doesn't work, okay.

Next is, tengo unas gafas del sol to have. Sunglasses. I have, yo tengo.

I have sunglasses. I have. I have sunglasses, yeah.

Siguiente. He has, or she has, tiene dos gatos. He has, or she has two cats.

Super, siguiente. Tienes muchos dinero. We have... Tenéis, tenéis.

¿Tienes mucho dinero? It's like lots of money. Mucho dinero, mucho dinero. Siguiente.

¿Tienemos frío? Tenemos. Without i, tenemos. Tenemos frío.

Frío, cold. Oh, cold, okay. Yeah.

And the last one. Tienen deberes. They have deberes.

They have... Housework. Okay, okay. Earning or cleaning.

Deberes, okay. Okay, so now you will translate a very simple sentence. I have money.

Tengo dinero. Y siguiente. I don't have the mobile phone.

No tengo el móvil. El móvil. Muy bien, Roy.

Entonces, muchas gracias. Ya conoces el verbo tener, muy bien. Muchas gracias.
