The Unwritten Promotion Game
SPEAKER_02Most of the stuff that's impacting your promotion is not written down. If your boss likes you, if your boss wants you to win, then guess what you tend to do? Get promoted, get a bonus, get a raise. There's always a team being picked. For sure. Anytime there's a meeting, it's like, let's do that. Everybody's looking around going, I want them, I want them, I want them. Somebody's picking a team at all times. I love talent, but I will never take talent over heart. Yeah. Never. Because heart, that'll kill you. Any coach is looking for players with good attitudes. So true. Because attitude determines altitude.
Welcome And Why Promotion Matters
SPEAKER_01Well, I want to welcome you back to the Lead to Win podcast today. I know so many of you maybe listen to this podcast every other week on the way to work or at the gym. But wherever you listen to us or watch us from, we are excited to get to join in with you, but also really excited for the topic that we're jumping into today, kind of a new series. Excited to hear from Pastor Jeff. I do want to encourage you though, if you do keep up with this podcast regularly, to maybe subscribe or you can follow us on social media or like or comment if you are enjoying this content. It helps us to continue to get this out and to serve you in the best way that we can. But Pastor Jeff, excited to be back with you today.
SPEAKER_02You know, so on uh Apple CarPlay on my car, then you know, you because I'm not massively technological. So usually when I'm describing something that I feel is very powerful, other people have been doing it for like five years. Long time. Yeah. But I like love it. Like I click on there, then it has the podcast that I've listened to. And then like I I actually listen to podcasts that are like
Bass Fishing Sidebar And Focus
SPEAKER_02seven minutes that's like a little cut down, but then I also listen to some that are like really long. Yeah, like but I don't I don't really care how long they are if I like the person I'm listening to or the content. You listen to yourself often, or I listen to this podcast too. It's it's it's a little bit annoying to listen to yourself, but I do like to hear the interaction and the content and see if we're helping people. But I listen to bass fishing podcasts, I listen to leadership podcasts, a few like spiritual sort of motivational type things.
SPEAKER_01So every time I'm at your house and I'm looking on your YouTube, I see these bass fishing podcasts. Help help the listeners out. What do you I mean you think of fishing as pretty quiet? I mean, are they are they on the boat or are they just talking about like lures? Like what are what are you listening to?
SPEAKER_02Well, the YouTube, there are some like on the water lessons that are more on YouTube, but the podcast is usually like it's a sport. I know people don't realize that. It's a sport. So there's leagues and there's people, and so you're usually like listening, following. And my favorite ones are like I've seen the name of this person, and then they'll like they'll like interview them and they kind of tell their story and listen. So I'm more learning about the people, learning a little bit about, you know, uh certain styles. Remember, there's you know, different places in the country. So you have smallmouth up north, right? You have different weather patterns, you have Florida that it starts warming up early. So there's a whole host of reasons why.
SPEAKER_01But what's your new bait? Because I know you have a bait that you're really excited about. It looks like a um like a sea urchin.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a little not really new anymore, but it's it's it is it did take the bass fishing world by storm the last year, and like they actually were probably smart. I don't know if they created like a vacuum to like increase market sales, but there was a point where it was like very hard to get one of these.
SPEAKER_01Didn't did somebody at the church bring you one or something?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a guy on a Saturday night service who's in the fishing industry. Okay, so it's it's a hide-up quickie, and it is a urchin style bait that is a floating, it was a Japanese bait that was used as a like a floating, suspending Japanese topwater that then in America they started weighting them, and it's primarily used with the technology of LiveScope. And these things, they just they became like people were paying this. Is a plastic bait that you can lose or be destroyed, $500. It's not even like a hard $500 for one one day. They were buying like five of them for $2,500. And a guy on a Saturday night service, he and I had talked, and he brought me one of the original, the OG. Now they're all knocked off, and you can get plenty. He brought me an OG and I ordained him as a pastor on this box. I laid hands on him and made him an elder. But anyway, so yeah, you don't want to, we did not want to go down the bass fishing path because I'll get all excited about that.
Free Leadership Gathering Announcement
SPEAKER_02So let's let's do but I do, I do, I'm thankful, and I know people from uh all different areas of leadership and growth, and there's pastors and staff members and people, and and uh we were just in a meeting, we're getting geared up for our leaders gathering in January, so I'm pumped about that. We have Chris Tomlin coming, so pumped for people to come here, hear uh him, and then I'm really excited about some of our topics. Conference is free. Um, I don't think you find a lot of places that add that much value that it's free. So it's free, and you can bring your team, makes it possible for churches, even on a smaller budget, to bring their team members. And we do a lot of great breakout sessions where your team always tell my team you need to know somebody further along than you ahead of you in your area. And so uh just give them a little shout out for that January 4th.
SPEAKER_01Yep, January 4th to the 6th. It's gonna be incredible. Um, registration's open, leadtowin.com. You can go on register. We also have a youth pastor gathering um that kind of leads into it the day before. So if you're a youth pastor, um you don't want to miss that, but just an incredible gathering, whole events free. It's gonna be gonna
Setting Up Five Ways To Promote
SPEAKER_01be amazing.
SPEAKER_02So we want to start a new a new series. I I've been wanting to, you know, I have guests and I love I just love introducing people to other people and hearing their story, but um, I want to do a a five episode series, and I want to I want to do it around I guess what I would call five ways to get promoted.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, wow.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I think people listening, they want to get promoted, they want to be recognized, they want to get a raise. Um, so but I would actually say this series would also be good for people leading departments, people leading in areas as well, things you're looking for in employees. Right. What are you looking for in in people to hire? And so five ways to get promoted. And I want to tell everybody as we get into this series of podcast that it's something I'm really passionate about. I didn't just like I actually am packaging it in a way to help everybody, but it's something I've I've worked on for the last year. Yeah. Um I uh let me set the stage. Yeah, I just came out of our staff gathering, we call it. It's really a now it's kind of like a staff conference. It's about two and a half days of all of our staff, our team, all of the college students, all of our residents and interns. So it's it's everyone in the orbit. And then we allow them the freedom to bring spouses. So um when you put all that together, it's several hundred people that it's like a congregation in and of itself. And I feel such a stewardship and a responsibility to those people. I mean, I am unique, not everybody listening to the podcast is a pastor, but I'm unique in the sense that I'm their pastor and I lead the organization. So I actually have a stewardship spiritually for them, and I also want to create a climate and an atmosphere that they can really develop and grow. And um, and so our culture was a strong organic culture. Part of that's due to my leadership style, part of that is due to I started the church with some of my friends that I discipled. Part of that is I'm a big, I'm a big heart, culture, spirit person. Yeah, and I'm also engaged. So I'm really engaged. I mean, you and I just walked out of a meeting that started at what time this morning? Yeah. 10, 10:30. So, and we're talking plans, we're talking ideas, we're talking culture, we're talking about not that, this. So all of that led us to a place where, so some of you may need to address your culture, be more intentional about your culture, but culture is what people experience. And I spent about nine or ten months really working hard on culture values, how to make it accessible. And we just had our leaders gathering, and it was fun, it was life-giving, it was exciting. You know, I mean, I don't know, you tell me probably a better perspective. I feel like everybody walked away having felt it. Yep.
SPEAKER_01You know, well, there were so many different moments. I mean, yeah, like where you could feel the value, it wasn't just being taught. I mean, we did you did these documentary videos where the team shared the values and how they've both experienced them and lived them. But I mean, definitely the fruit. I was telling you this in the meeting this morning. The fruit on the back side of the values is, I mean, I look around this room, even some of the people here that are on my teams, like when they left it, you know, were very easily able to start evaluating, okay, now it's clear, right? Like this is this is one I'm really good at. This is one that I struggle with. Even as my manager, like what do you see? Like, where can I grow? Which one do you feel like I need to grow in? So the clarity, the definition definitely helped everyone to be able to see the target, see the goal, see the scoreboard, you know.
SPEAKER_02So to be clear, I want to do, I'm I'm gleaning from that, put a lot of work. I mean, stickers for your laptop, merch, things, I mean, all kind of crazy. Finders, viewfinders, documentary video series. It was quite a bit. And uh shout out to some of my team that really helped that become possible. But you know, culture, you have to experience. I mean, you can say it on paper all day, but people have to experience it, right? And so that's what I've been living in. So I'm passionate. But I want to do a series of, you know, how do I get promoted? Like, because I believe some of our values are are somewhat universal too, to where you may want to put them into your culture, but you also might want to maybe learn how to prioritize these things with the people that you're leading. Or at a bottom level, every person here, I think if you get a few of these, you're gonna get promoted in the environment that you're in.
Why Good Spirit Beats Talent
SPEAKER_02There's always a team being picked. Oh, yeah. For sure. Anytime there's a meeting, it's like, let's do that. Everybody's looking around going, I want them, I want them, I want them. Somebody's picking a team at all times. And so, number one in this series, because we're gonna do number one. I know it took me a little while to set it up, but I think number one in the series, how to get promoted, how to be picked, how to be a team member. You know, I always say too, is you want to be the person when it's like I have people on my team that if push came to shove, I would give them some of my salary before I would I mean other words, I don't want to do it without them.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02How do you get on that team?
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02You know, and I think number one is have a good spirit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Have a good spirit. That I mean, that seems so vague. I remember even when you put it up on the screen, like I'm sitting there like, have a good spirit, you know? Halloween's coming up. Like, you know, what do I get it so?
SPEAKER_02Only go as a firefighter, not as some uh something that's uh no one as Mr.
SPEAKER_01Incredible. I think mom just just about backhanded me for that.
SPEAKER_02Mom is no no Halloween person, and then you told the dentist, I'm the dentist asked Laney, who's in the chair, what are you going to as uh for Halloween? And and uh Laney goes, We don't celebrate Halloween, and then you said, I'm going as Mr. Incredible. Your mom about killed you.
SPEAKER_00But anyway, so I thought Disney was fair game. I mean, you know, nothing scary.
SPEAKER_02So have a have a good, good spirit. Here's the way I would here's the way I would say it. You can walk into a home and you feel something. You're like, it feels static here. You can be like, it feels fun here. Oh, it feels like they were ready for me to be here. Yeah. I smell candles, I feel like they maybe have been cooking something, I smell some cookies, I feel you know, it's disorganized, it's dirty, it's sloppy. The people in the environment, if you go to someone's home, you can find out, you can feel if there's tension. Yeah, do these people really love each other? Do they get along? Do they trust each other? A home has a spirit, yeah, it has a culture, it has an environment, has an ethos. And people do too. You know, I I can't tell you how many times you're like I I've been where it's just like, man, you know, I don't know if they had an I don't know if they know how to do anything, but they have a good spirit. And it's like I just, you know, and I and I'm a I'm big on, you know, I love talent, but I will never take talent over heart. Yeah. Never. Because heart that'll kill you. True. I've known some I've I've met with some, I mean, I remember in a specific area of our church, we were very behind. And like I just like, we have to go here. Like it I would say we needed this person's talent. Yeah. And I remember meeting with them and they're like an industry leader, and I was just thinking, man, they know a lot, but I'm gonna end up choking this person, you know. Not you're not really supposed to choke anybody as a Christian, you're supposed to forgive them.
SPEAKER_01Because of bad spirit, though.
SPEAKER_02Bad spirit, and and I and it wouldn't be because of how you relate to me, it'd be how you relate to others. Right. Because uh, you know, as a dad, you're always thinking, okay, you don't get the right to mistreat other people. If you do, I'm going to have to have a moment with you. Right. But I just remember thinking, just their spirit was just like, eh. When you walk away from someone, you're always discerning. The the dialogues about EQ and IQ. Yeah. Okay. Everybody thinks you need to be smarter. There's plenty of people with lots of degrees who are very ineffective in terms of I'm not against degrees. I have multiple degrees. So but I am saying it's been proven, and this is why it's so important to help your kids with attitude as a parent, because your attitude determines your altitude. I'll give you some Bible verses. Um I love I love the Thessalonic church, you know, like everybody was talking about Thessalonica. Paul writes 'em. I I'm he said he he says this, our gospel didn't come to you in word and deed only, but in full conviction and the power of the Holy Spirit. So he said, it isn't just about what you're saying, it isn't just about what you're doing. Those are important. It's also about how you're doing it. You have a conviction, you're walking in the power of the Holy Spirit. And he says something, a little bit of paraphrase here, but he basically is like, I don't really have to go talk about you. Everybody's talking about what God's doing among you. And he and he's just commending them and encouraging them on how they're doing what they're doing. And my joke is he's like, I don't need to run an ad campaign. Yeah, I don't need to put you on social media. You don't have to get you don't have to trend. You don't have to go viral. Yep. Because you don't need any PR. You don't need PR because you have such a good spirit, everybody's gonna find out. Right. You know?
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02And and so the reality is people with good spirits find other people with good spirits. True. People with a bad spirit find the people with a bad spirit.
SPEAKER_01So true.
SPEAKER_02Like attracts a like. Like attracts like. I'll be honest, as a pastor, it quite I should know it, but as a pastor, it always surprises me. It's like they have a bad spirit, and then you find out, well, they're connected to this person, this person. You will eventually attract and find people that like spirit attracts like spirit. Yeah, right. Um, Philippians 2 actually says, do everything without grumbling or arguing. Man, that's a high call. I have grumbled and I have had a tendency to argue, I'll tell you that. So that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation, then you will shine among them like stars in the sky. So the basically is not that you can't have convictions or whatever, but he's like, okay, if you can be known as you're not a complainer and you're not, I would say argumentative. What he's really talking about is being argumentative. Some people you can't lead, some people you can't talk to, some people you can't work with. Because and so just and and in our world, this is getting harder because you get clicks and you get likes and you get you get extra credit for making twos of ten. Yep. And so so and then you have the algorithm-driven iPhone that feeds you your bias. For sure. It stirs you up
Complaining Culture And The Algorithm
SPEAKER_02all the time.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, that was gonna be my first question on this topic is like, I mean, I work with young adults every day. So most of them are graduated from college, first job. And I mean, it's pretty rare that you find your dream job at your first pass. You know, I mean, you're getting out of school, you're getting your job. And a lot of times people can say it's hard to have a good spirit when my boss is difficult, or this isn't the job I thought I was gonna have, or I really want to be doing that. Like that that might be the question that a viewer has. And I think it's learned behavior a lot of times.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it is human nature, but if you grew up around an atmosphere where if you pout, you get your way, then you pout more. Yep. In my house, if you pout, you for sure are not getting your way. Yep. Just because you pouted. Of course not. Yep. I mean, that's of course not, because that's gonna reward behavior that's gonna hurt you later.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And so some people just have learned to manipulate their parents and pout, and they think that's what the world's gonna do, is every time they stick their lip out. Sam, my grandson, is big right now, and we do, I don't know, some people are listening and they're not can't see this, but our favorite thing right now is he does like his hand, and his hand comes and he goes and then he goes down, he goes, And so when his hand goes over, he changes emotions. And what he's showing me is when he sticks that big lip out there, it's a choice. And he can change it, but he doesn't want to. Oh, yeah. And so so we've been taught to pout, we have been taught to we've also grown up in homes where when you parents actually reinforcing disagreement with authority figures with their kids, yeah, like teaching them that you don't want to listen to any of your coaches or your pastors or anybody. Right. And so for me, that's a that's a terrible behavior that's gonna hurt you in life one day. Like, in other words, what I would say is if you have a tough coach, if I my advice will be, as you had, I know you're laughing because you had a tough coach, who actually goes to our church? Goes to our church, yeah. No, you won him over, and I mean he was tough. I mean, honestly, I think overboard at times, you know, but I never defended, I never told you, hey, you need to go tell him and you need to give him peace of your mind, and how dare that guy talk to you or whatever. I was like, he's your coach, go win with him. Yeah, go do what he says. And he and and being coached tougher is only gonna make you better. People who get played favorites only become worse.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02And so a lot of people haven't grown up with that thought process. All I'm saying, the Bible says if you're not an argumentative person and you're not a complaining person, you shine like the stars in the sky in today's world. So I think it's so true. People with a good spirit, you're just like, man, it's amazing. Um, cultural research shows this. Uh, this is a research of about 15,000 employees found that workers with positive attitudes demonstrated higher performance, greater camaraderie, increased personal fulfillment. The same studies also showed that the best organizational cultures depended heavily on behaviors that aren't in anyone's job description. Yeah. So most of the
Handling Bad Bosses And Tough Coaches
SPEAKER_02this is part of why I started wanting to write down some things, get more clear. Most of the stuff. That's impacting your promotion is not written down. It's the unwritten cultural things that you're not you're not picking up on. Because there's an it, there's a there's a non-job description, non-evaluation thing where I'll just be honest, if your boss likes you, if your boss wants you to win, then guess what you tend to do? Get promoted, get a bonus, get a raise, because when they're selecting, they're gonna always pick the people with the good spirit. Yeah. A group of 88 studies emphasize this, and I'm gonna go to what I think some of the characteristics of good spirit is, that the role of flexibility was one of the biggest characteristics in good spirit, meaning they're flexible. Pivot. They know how to pivot, they know how to flow. Yep. And and so I think it plays into some of these characteristics, and it is one of them that that I think is that I wrote down.
SPEAKER_01I think just to just to clarify, so you're saying if you want to get promoted, first thing you'd say is have a good spirit. We'll get to some practicals and things later on, further episodes, but have a good spirit, make it practical for us. What are what are the few things you'd be like, first of all?
SPEAKER_02I would also say, would you be willing to ask a dangerous question? Because most of the time people with a bad spirit aren't really open to someone telling them they have a bad spirit, but everybody knows they do. So again, powders, manipulators, people that have been taught to have a bad spirit, and and really having a bad spirit really means that you've grown up with a world view that it's about you. That's really what it means. So I have the right. And that and that's that's the sad thing about even disciplining kids and training kids and raising up kids is you you let let them grow up and then think that the world revolves around them, and that's dangerous. But really, good spirit. If you say what would I say practically, would you ask that crazy dangerous question of your boss to go, do you feel like, okay, I know you want me, what are some things you want me to work on? And and and I know that I have these things you need me to do before next week, and I know you'd like me to raise my sales and you'd like me to touch more people and be on time and da-da-da. But can I ask you a real a real practical question? Do you feel like I have a good attitude? Yeah, yeah. You feel like I have a good attitude? Because I'm gonna tell you any coach is looking for players with good attitudes. So true. It's massive. And if if you and so if if if you ask that question and they say, you know what, I think you do. Like I really want to help you, you're gonna overcome those other things if you have a good attitude. 100%. Yeah. What does a person look like who has a good spirit? I just wrote down a few. Number one, fun, right? I mean, I just think people with a good spirit are fun. I don't mean you have to be silly. I don't mean you have to be corny, but are you fun to be around? Like do do people want to be with you? I and and and the old saying is people most people who aren't fun think they are. True.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's the do you take yourself too seriously?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. That's a sign of security, by the way. Good spirited people have a security, and we all are insecure, let's be clear. We all have insecurities. But one thing that's secure, and I would say this if you do speaking and if you work with younger people, making fun of yourself is a big deal in terms of showing and offering security, like throw yourself under the bus a little, be more, be more self-aware about who you are because they already know you are that way. But one thought I've had several times is, are you having fun? And they're like, Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_01And I'm like, Well, you need to tell your face. Well, I mean, you mentioned it in the in the teaching. You were saying, like, I I love what we get to do. I love, and and that was ministry specific, you know. But I mean, I can't believe I get to do what we're doing. Even on a hard day, it's like, man, this is fun, you know.
SPEAKER_02You can't you can't look at
The Unwritten Behaviors That Win
SPEAKER_02any success book, any success book. Or you I watch these guys on YouTube that interview successful people or whatever. You can't see any of those, and they don't say, if you enjoy and love what you do. So true. Then eventually the money and the scoreboard and the results and the whatever it is, but you gotta love it. Yep. I mean you and and I think a lot of people, I will say to ministry, a lot of people see it as a burden, and then they wonder why they don't have people around them that have a it there's a contagious atmosphere when you really love it.
SPEAKER_01Yep, you know, because it's infectious either way, like negative with your family, you know. Well, that's gonna get off on everybody, you know, positive.
SPEAKER_02Lighten up, laugh a little more. Yeah, laughter doeth good. What is it? It's like medicine. Boy, do you think about people need some medicine today? You know, spiritual health, soul health, emotional health, laugh a little bit. Curious. I realize this was a big one that I don't talk about enough. I like curious people. They're learning, they have stuff to offer. Creativity is also based on curiosity because you you're curious about how things work. Yeah, you want to know what's motivating those people? Where's that coming from? Talk to me. I I think I think you want to be a type of person that learns something new every day. It's good. And I and I think good-spirited people have this idea. Wow, tell me, tell me more about that.
SPEAKER_01What? Where really? I mean, even you wouldn't say this about yourself, but to to honor you for a second, like you, you challenge me a lot in this direction. I mean, last week I walk into a meeting. I mean, there's 40 people in the room, and you've invited one of the greatest pastors in America who's coaching you. Not a lot of people at your station and size are doing that. Not only did you allow them to coach you, you invited your whole team to watch you get coached. Right. And your whole posture was like, what do you see? Like, what am I missing? Is there a blind spot? I mean, that challenged me a lot to be like, man, who am I learning from? Like, am I curious enough?
SPEAKER_02Well, most of the time we spend time defending what we've done, but you can't ever get better at anything. Your primary goal is to defend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So everybody with a sinking ship was probably defending something while the boat was sinking. Yeah. Right. So I think, I think curious. Yeah, just be curious. Be, be, I want to learn something new. I would give people, I'm talking about just a sales, yeah, connection, evangelism, whatever level you might see it. If you are interested, insecure people sit at a table and talk about themselves.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it's like, how do you become interested? If you're out there and you're like, I want to get a date, I want to get a job, I want to get a friend, be interested. Because you know what people love to do? Talk about themselves. So be curious. Nimble and flexible, right? We embrace new ideas, we adapt quickly. We're we're the these are type of people that are ready to pivot when things change, you know. And and I and I think I think you need processes, you need administration, those are very important, but the processes were there to serve the people.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02And the processes there were there to serve the vision. Those those things are not there to serve the processes. So what's the best way to do it? The way that works. Yeah. Right. And sometimes you're especially when you're in a uh a new business, a new church setup, and a new development of something, then then things are going to develop, right? I've seen people have trouble working in the in the speaking specifically of the ministry environment where they were very successful in some other settings, and they're just like, they couldn't, you know, bend or you will break.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02And they couldn't adapt. You know, they would ask me, they go, well, I just I have to feel like we're just making this up. I'm like, because we are. We're making we made this up now. Never done this before, yeah. Yeah. I mean, there's an element to it, reaching new people, reaching new places, you know, doing new things, being being open.
SPEAKER_01And so it's it's all changing. And based on your personality, it might be easy, you know, some might be easier or more difficult. I definitely think for an administrative person, which is so valuable.
SPEAKER_02Wow, 100%. This could be.
SPEAKER_01We're all administrative if we're leaders, but and it's pretty, pretty hard to find a job that you're not going to have to flex or change, you know. Um, so no, I think that's a great one.
SPEAKER_02Life giving. I mean, at the end of the day, the person with the good spirit is the person looking to add value to someone else. I think most people are always asking the question, do you have something that could help me? Yeah. The the rare person, the person that stands up, as as I think John Maxwell said it the first time or somebody, but how do you get out of the pile? Yeah. You want to get out of the pile, be the one going, what can I do to add value to you? I had David Green on here, right? My question to him wasn't, would you help me with this or that? I honestly had no thought of anything that I needed from him. I just wanted to share him with my world. I just wanted to bless people with who he was. So good. But I I I asked him the question, is there anything I can do to add value to you? And so that a part of it was me helping him
Traits Of A Good Spirit
SPEAKER_02get his book out and and and I'm wanting to make this available. What I'm saying is that's a small example. Yeah. In every relationship, in every situation, in your workplace, how do you add value? And it's your team that promotes you. So it's also like how good a teammate. People with good spirits are better teammates. People with bad spirits have to play individual sports.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because no one wants to play with them. Yeah. You know, so you if you ministry is a team sport and teams win championships. And I heard a guy recently talking about that going, we talk about teams all the time. You know, it's about Moses, it's about the man, it's about this person and whatever. And I mean, of course, when God wanted to do something, he raised up a leader, but that leader is ineffective. Moses also didn't possess the promised land because the team didn't want to go. Yeah. So the reality is it's both. Yeah. And and it is a leader, but it's a team. But to build a team, to be on a team, to work with others, you gotta, you gotta have that, I want to add value to someone else spirit.
SPEAKER_01Well, and I think the lie you can believe too is if I present well to my boss and I come in with the big add in the smiles, but then I I don't translate that. Your coworkers always know. And like you said, you've said that for years. Your team promotes you, right? And you can think, but but life-giving, flexible, curious, fun, all the things you just mentioned, that will come out whether you are that or not.
SPEAKER_02There's gonna be a meeting and the team's gonna talk about your attitude and how you relate. Your boss is gonna say it, but your teammates are gonna say it. And honestly, I can't protect you from you. Yeah. I can't. It's good. It's not just about me, it's about the people you work with every day. I wrote down a clarifying question on each of these because I think you talk about getting it really real. Yep. Is ask yourself this question. What happens to my attitude when I'm asked to trust without all the information? If you're in a growing atmosphere, that's happening more and more. I have to trust, but I don't have all the information. What about if I'm mischaracterized? What if someone misrepresents me? Can I have a good spirit when I'm being misunderstood? That's big. Or what about if I'm asked to pivot to a different role? Maybe a different role than what I feel like is my strongest role or the role I like. Or in other words, it's like, well, I'll pivot if it's to something better.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. As long as we're moving up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But what what about what about what about pivoting when it's maybe outside the realm of what you would think? And you just go, well, I'm just gonna have a good spirit and steward it for for God's glory. I'm gonna, I'm gonna serve him in it. And yeah, all that means, and and I would say to everybody, people who have a good spirit have A, been around people who require good spirits and have had to work through their own junk. It's got to get pushed out of them.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02But I would also say people, people over the long term that have a good spirit consult the right advice, they have the truth around them, but they're also willing, they're willing to let it change them. There's a lot of people have access to a lot of stuff that they don't allow to impact them. And they're really good at at self-talk. Like you got to become good at self-talk. To have a good spirit, you have to be good at self-talk.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, I was gonna say after what the question you asked and everything you were saying, it sounds like even have a good spirit really comes back to character.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it is.
SPEAKER_01Whatever job, whatever role, whatever, like I'm still gonna be the same person despite the situation around me.
SPEAKER_02So who are you? Yeah, exactly. So I would say, I would say maybe ask a dangerous question to the people you work with, to some other people around you, say, hey, do you feel like I have a good attitude? Because attitude determines altitude.
SPEAKER_01That's so good.
