In the previous provincial election, the Green Party and their 3 seats held the balance of power, and as a result they managed to get a lot of things they wanted for their support on legislation.
With 8 Unaffiliated Independents running, they could be the ones to hold the balance of power this year, and get more leverage on things they want for their ridings.
And being Independent, they have no strings attached to party lines holding them back.
