[00:00:00] Welcome back to Judy at Carnegie Hall, everything you ever wanted to know about the greatest concert that ever was. I'm Grace, your host, and I'm so glad you're joining me for episode two. We'll be diving into the lead up to that unforgettable night. We all know that great performances don't just happen.

Though the result of meticulous planning, countless hours of preparation, and a deep commitment to excellence, Judy Garland's Carnegie Hall concert was no exception. Today we'll explore the behind the scenes efforts that went into making that night, one of the most celebrated events in music history.

We'll talk about the planning. The key players who made it all possible, and of course, the [00:01:00] personal and professional pressures Judy herself was facing in the days and weeks leading up to the concert. Let's start with the planning and preparation. When you think about a concert as monumental as this one was, it's easy to imagine that.

Everything must have been seamless from the start, but in reality, it took an extraordinary amount of event of, it took an extraordinary amount of effort and coordination to bring Judy Garland. To Carnegie Hall, the planning phase involved her management team working hand in hand with the venue, the musicians, and everyone involved in the production.

Every detail had to be perfect from the lighting and sound to the arrangements of the [00:02:00] songs themselves. Judy's vocal style was unique and the arrangements. Needed to reflect that to highlight her amazing voice best. They had to feature her powerful voice and emotional delivery while also allowing her the freedom to connect with her audience in the way only Judy could, her husband at the time.

Sid Loft played a crucial role in this process. Sid wasn't just her husband, he was also her manager and one of the driving forces behind her career revival. He understood the stakes involved in this performance, not just for Judy, but for her entire career. Her, it was Sid who worked [00:03:00] tirelessly to make sure that everything was in place for that night.

And ensure that Judy had the best possible support from every corner. Now, let's talk about Judy herself. Leading up to the concert, Judy Garland was in a precarious state, both personally and professionally. On one hand, she was riding high on the success of her live performances. The public had fallen in love with her all over again.

She was back in the spotlight where she belonged. But with that success came immense pressure. Pressure to deliver a flawless performance pressure to live up to her reputation and pressure to overcome the personal demons [00:04:00] that plagued her. For so long and would continue to. Judy was dealing with ongoing health issues, including exhaustion and the effects of years of addiction.

Her body was fragile, but her spirit was strong as ever. She knew how important this concert was, and despite everything, she was determined to give the performance of a lifetime. There's something. Truly remarkable about that. The way she could channel her struggles into something so powerful on stage, it's a testament to her resilience and deep love and mastery of her craft.

Of course. Judy wasn't alone in preparing for this concert. [00:05:00] Several key players were instrumental in bringing everything together. We've already mentioned Sid Loft, but we also need to talk about Mort Lindsay, the music director. Moore played a critical role in arranging the songs for the concert. He instinctively understood Judy's voice and knew exactly how to bring out the best in her performance.

He was more than just a conductor. He was a collaborator. Someone, Judy trusted implicitly to help her create something magical.

A little known fact about Mortal Lindsay is that he was a last minute hire. Who quickly earned, uh, Judy's admiration. Her previous band leader had dropped out due to the difficulty of her musical arrangements. So Lindsay [00:06:00] was brought in at the last minute. He had planned to take a year off from conducting, but he was persuaded to attend a rehearsal.

Judy herself recalled that he rehearsed the entire show with the orchestra in just two hours, which to her demonstrated his skill and his efficiency, their professional collaboration was successful. That Mort Lindsay worked with Judy for many years afterwards. He later recounted the meticulous effort that went into preparing the show, particularly the sophisticated orchestrations.

He said her orchestrations by everybody were just as spectacular as you could want. [00:07:00] All carefully thought out. Each one was a production, which, you know, if you listen to the concert, it's pretty obvious.

The musicians themselves were also carefully selected, handpicked. Each one was chosen. Not just for their technical skill, but for their ability to compliment and understand Judy's voice.

[00:08:00] This wasn't just another gig for them. They knew they were part of something special and they brought their A game to every rehearsal. Speaking of rehearsals, this is where we get to some of the most interesting stories, rehearsals for the Carnegie Hall concert. Were. Intense. Judy was a perfectionist, and she demanded the best from herself and everyone around her, despite her shaky hell.

That time she insisted on long hours of practice. She wanted to make sure that every note, every gesture and every moment of the performance was just right. There are some great anecdotes from these rehearsal sessions that really highlight Judy's determination and the comradery between her and the musicians.

One story that stands out as how Judy, despite [00:09:00] being physically exhausted, would push herself to rehearse just one more time, run through a song again, until it was exactly how she wanted it, the musicians. Were in awe of her dedication.

Even when they could see she was struggling, they never doubted that she would pull through. There was a mutual respect and understanding in that room. Everyone was there to support her, and she in turn inspired them to give their best a memorable. A memorable moment during the rehearsal of Over The Rainbow, which was of course one of Judy's signature, it was her signature song.

It carried so much emotional weight for her. As she began to sing, [00:10:00] the entire room fell silent, and it was as if time stood still. There was something almost sacred about the way she delivered those lyrics. Even in rehearsal, the musicians later recalled that it was, in that moment, they knew the concert was going to be something truly extraordinary.

The lead up to the Carnegie Hall concert was filled with challenges, actually, but it was. Also filled with moments of beauty determination and the kind of artistry that only someone like Judy Garland could bring. It's easy to get caught up in the glamor of the final performance, but it's important to remember the work, the sweat, the tears that went into making that night happen.

In our next episode, we'll move on to the [00:11:00] concert itself, the set list. The audience reactions and what it was like to be in that room when Judy Garland took the stage. But for now, I hope you've enjoyed this glimpse into the preparation and planning that led to one of the greatest concerts of all time.
