Dr. Kerri McBee-Black shares her experience in the back of a room, feeling appalled at how outdated the field of adaptive clothing was. She recounts how simple solutions like buttonholes could address big problems, yet there was a lack of attention and care in the industry.
This realization led her team to shift their research focus towards understanding and solving the challenges faced by people with disabilities. Despite facing many rejections in getting their research published due to misconceptions about the needs and desires of people with disabilities, Dr. McBee-Black and her team persevered.
By 2013, they were actively engaging with communities to better serve them, facing and challenging prevailing biases in the process.
