Black Educator Wellness Facilitator | Producer & Host - The Exit Interview: A Podcast for Black Educators | Keynote Speaker
Dr. Asia Lyons, the founder and lead designer at Lyons Educational Consulting (LEC) LLC, is deeply committed to her mission of co-creating truly inclusive environments designed to empower Black educators and foster their self-actualization through wellness initiatives.
Dr. Lyons brings nearly 20 years of practical and academic knowledge to her work as a former K-12 educator in the Denver Metro Area and as an adjunct professor at the esteemed University of Colorado - Denver School of Education and Human Development. She earned her doctorate in Leadership for Educational Equity, with a concentration in Urban and Diverse Communities, where her dissertation research examined the profound impact of racism-related stress and racial battle fatigue on Black educators and their families.
As a consultant and speaker, she shares her research findings and approaches to help Black educators recover from racial battle fatigue and help institutions and organizations better support their Black educators to improve retention. She co-founded the Black Educator Wellness Cohort, where she co-facilitates free monthly wellness sessions in the Greater Denver Area. In addition, Lyons Educational Consulting offers virtual wellness webinars nationwide for Educators of Color. She has spoken to audiences at South by Southwest (SXSW) EDU, Harvard Graduate School of Education, the National Education Associations Conference on Racial and Social Justice and the National Board of Certified Counselors Symposium.
She is the host and producer of The Exit Interview: A Podcast for Black Educators, where she amplifies the stories of former Black educators and why they left education. She hopes to inform, through the podcast, school districts, teachers' unions, families, and others how to better support and retain Black people in education.
In alignment with her commitment to archival justice and storytelling as a tool for healing, Dr. Lyons is leading a statewide photo story project that documents the lived experiences of Black educators who taught in Colorado between 1960 and 2000. This project combines oral history interviews with powerful portrait photography and historic teaching images, culminating in a public exhibit at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library in early 2026. Through this work, Dr. Lyons aims to honor the legacy of Black educators in Colorado, preserve their stories for future generations, and deepen public understanding of their contributions and challenges.
