IDP Rising Stock: Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

IDP Rising Stock: Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

Now that the fantasy football regular season is over, fantasy managers are now turning their focus to how they want to reorganize their fantasy rosters. You know which positions are your weakest, which are your strongest, and what players you want to keep, trade, or upgrade. The off-season is the most pivotal time in roster construction and the diversification of your IDP portfolios. With that in mind, I have the perfect rising player stock for you! That player is third-year DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers drafted Tryon-Shoyinka from the University of Washington in the 1st round (32nd overall selection) of the 2021 NFL draft. For his college career, Tryon-Shoyinka would play in 23 games, with 61 total tackles, 37 solo stops, 60.6% solo rate, 14½ TFLs, nine sacks, and two PBUs. Here we are three seasons later, with increased production and efficiency at the pro level, leading me to believe he is on the verge of breaking out. Now Tampa Bay needs Tryon-Shoyinka to take his game to the next level and become the high-end pass rusher that they need. He had a solid showing in the Buccaneers' playoff win over Philadelphia and gets another opportunity this week versus Detroit.

Tryon-Shoyinka has spent three seasons with the Buccaneers and just wrapped up his best season as a professional. In 51 career games, he has made 34 starts, with 114 total tackles, 72 solo stops, a 63.1% solo tackle rate, 18 TFLs, 31 QB hits, 13 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and six PBUs. When you look at his numbers from year to year, you can see the progress and improvement. In 17 games played this season, he’s started 12 contests, while recording totals of 45 tackles, 28 solo stops, 62.2% solo rate, seven TFLs, seven QB hits, five sacks, one forced fumble, one recovery, one PBU, with a 6.3% missed tackle rate.

Tryon-Shoyinka will turn 25 in April and the progressing potential he is showing is why the Buccaneers are giving him a chance to shine. When you look closely at his numbers, it was the much-improved efficiency that stood out the most. While Tryon-Shoyinka played 843 defensive snaps (75%) last season, he set personal best this season in tackles (45), solo stops (28), and sacks (5) in a more scaled-back role of 579 defensive snaps (51%). To further support the efficiency improvement is that despite seeing the lowest blitz usage (17) and pressures (13) to date, he set personal best in sacks (5) and TFLs (7).

What I will be looking for and expecting from Tryon-Shoyinka in 24’ is that same efficiency uptrend with a return to an increased role. The Buccaneers as of right now have some aging veterans (Shaquille Barrett) but also have a trio of young studs (Tryon-Shoyinka, YaYa Diaby, and Anthony Nelson) who can really be big-impact players on the edges. I feel the best teams (ex New York Jets) have that trio of pass rushers that they rotate and can consistently torment offenses. Plus when you factor in that they have one of the league's elite NT/DT (Vita Vea) to keep opposing offensive lines honest, the upside for Tryon-Shoyinka can’t be overlooked.

In the world of IDP, we all know how difficult it can be to find production at the defensive end position. It’s top-heavy but then falls off drastically! This makes the interest in Tryon-Shoyinka that much more valuable. Of course the deeper the league the more his value increases but if you play mainly IDP dynasty such as I do, then you know the struggle to find gems. Tryon-Shoyinka is a player who isn’t going to cost you a lot to invest in, but has all the qualities of a breakout stock and those are the types of players that I am personally looking to invest in for my IDP portfolios. My suggestion is don’t make him the focal point of your trades but more of a complimentary addition that can give you the huge edge (no pun intended) in getting the better value of the deal.
