Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer set out in fifteen nineteen with five ships and about two hundred and seventy men to find a western route to the Spice Islands. While Magellan successfully navigated the strait at the southern tip of South America now named after him, and reached the Philippines, he was killed in a battle with local chieftain Lapoo Lapou in fifteen twenty one. His expedition continued under the leadership of Juan Sebastian Elcano, who brought the last remaining ship, the Victoria, back to Spain in fifteen twenty two, with just eighteen of the original crew, completing the first circumnavigation of the globe.

On December fourteenth, nineteen eleven, Aminson and four companions became the first people to reach the geographic South Pole, beating a British expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott by about a month. Aminson's meticulous planning, use of dog sleds and adoption of inuits survival techniques allowed his team to complete the journey safely. In contrast, Scott's party reached the pole only to find Aminsen's Norwegian flag already planted there, and all five members of Scott's team perished during their return journey. Question five, Who was the first to reach Everest's summit? Answer Edmund Hillary. On May twenty ninth, nineteen fifty three, the New Zealand mountaineer and his SHERPA guide Tensing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at twenty nine thousand, thirty two feet, as part of a British expedition led by John Hunt. Hillary and Norgay's achievement came after seven previous expeditions had failed to reach the summit.
