Top Fives: IMDb Was Wrong

In the latest installment of their Top Fives series, Bob and Brad shine a light on some underrated favorites. These are films that IMDb users voted a 6.5 or lower on a 10-point scale, but that our hosts would award at least an 8.0.

Meanwhile, they sip on two whiskeys from Spirits of French Lick, an Indiana distillery making waves in the world of craft whiskey. These bottled-in-bond bourbons include a buckwheat bourbon, which is certainly the first time our hosts have used those words.

00 Hey everybody, Welcome to the podcast. We are back with another special bonus episode. Bonus episode food. Oh, that was nice. He had a nice little like a barbershop quartet tag at the end their bonus episode. All right. Well we are not talking about barbershop quartets today we're actually bringing back our top fives series, which Brad we haven't done one of these in a while and we need to do Do a more often. I love doing the top fives. Yeah I mean and I'm really excited. Today's topic is top 5. Movies about barbershop quartets. There it is. I don't know I don't know if there are five movies about I'm just trying to think. I was racking my brain and I do picks top five bottle tops barbershop quartet by hope picks. That's it man.

52 So today we're actually doing top 5 movies that we love but that IMDb does not like so Brad actually Out to me. And we were kind of talking about this because the theme of season 5 on this show is just kind of like personal favorites or movies. We want to revisit to see if they hold up and a lot of times what we've come across is, you know, a movie like Signs, the M Night Shyamalan film which I think on IMDb only has like a six point eight. And I mean I just found that shocking because I gave it like at least a nine. I think Brad you gave it a 9 as well. Like there's certain movies that for some reason it doesn't seem to click with the general. Public, but it does with us. Yeah, I think that there's just this reality that the general public sucks.

39 It wrong all the time, aren't they? And the proof of it is in the is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pudding, man. Listen, I went to see no way home. Just the other day. I finally got around to it. Finally jumped on the bandwagon. It was good. I did. You feel it? Was, who's good? Who's that sitting here? Yeah, it's good but good movie times were had. Yeah, as they always are with Marvel. Here's the thing, I feel bad dog and on the MCU so much because they genuinely put out like anywhere from like C plus to a minus movies like really consistently like they put out a lot of good work. The problem. The two problems I have is that a they are treated like every film is an A-Plus work and B, they just destroy everything else.

27 Like people act as if the MCU does if the MCU doesn't do well then that's like bad for Cinema and I'm like no the fact that y'all won't go see literally anything else in theaters but only Marvel movies. That's like that's probably the biggest problem. And what's going to destroy Cinema in the next five, you upset, we get down this Rabbit Hole again. I don't know man. Every single time we press record, we are, like, you're putting them on trial. I don't understand, we're here to do a top 5 episode man, and it doesn't have anything to do with the FCC. All right, so the criteria When Brad reached out to me, he said what would you think about doing a top five where on IMDb we have rated a movie at an eight or higher and IMDb users in general have rated it at it lower than a 6.5 like that was the criteria right?

18 Yeah. That that was the beginning of the criteria. Honestly, I had a hard time finding movies that fit into that criteria. So all of mine are under a 7.0 I The highest score I have is a six point eight. So, for the most part I would say that once you hit like 7.5 and up that's pretty hard to do on IMDb right once. But once you hit like, six point seven, six point eight and Below. That's usually a sign that people don't like this movie. Yeah. See, I'm in the opposite. Boat is you, man? Because I think I have like nine or ten movies that met the criteria that I'm trying to figure out which ones would be. My top five.

00 So I'm really doing this on the Fly today. I don't know if there's going to be any Rhyme or Reason to my list but I'm excited to jump into it. And while we do it today we have two whiskies that were sent to us from a fantastic. Distillery in Indiana called spirits of French Lick. They have really been making a name for themselves in the craft, Distillery industry. The last few years, I have heard nothing but Raves from people, like every time I see people release year-end lists with their favorite, whiskies spirits of French Lick is always On there. So we were sent samples of their whiskey that's called The Morning Glory which is a buck wheat bourbon and then we've also been sent a sample of their William Dalton weeded bourbon. So two completely different flavor profiles. I would imagine Brad, but I'm excited to try them both. Yeah I love seeing whiskey coming out of Indiana. That isn't sourced in Indiana.

52 You know what I mean? Yes, that's actually coming from something that that isn't a conglomerate. Yes. Yes, I'm really pumped to get into this today. All right, man. Well, let's let's jump into it then why don't you kick us off with your number five movie? You love that, the general public does not number five for me. This movie I genuinely did not expect to find on this list but the movie Click Adam Sandler. Kate Beckinsale 2000 and want to say like five or six dude. I remember watching this movie as a 15, 16 year-old and thinking to myself, I've never seen a movie go from being, like complete comedy for the first half of the movie to like tear jerker Drama by the end of the film. I, this movie Wrecked me, and I think one of the reasons I love this movie so much, and I would probably give it like, a seven and a half to an eight.

57 It's, there's a lot of flaws. It's Much so an Adam Sandler movie. But what I really loved about this movie was that it forced you to think about what are the things you're skipping over in life. And honestly, the more we get into a social media era, I feel like this movie was prescient like my wife tells me about her friends at work, who will sit on Tick Tock and scroll Tick Tock, while they're having conversations with her. Hmm. And that's just mind boggling. Lie to me that, like in my mind, that is literally like, pressing the fast-forward button on your life, just skipping over things. Michael was eagerly awaiting, the arrival of his lunch order was that James, Earl Jones, James hell does a lot of voiceover work, because anticipation quickly turned to dismay, as a realized Alice had brought him a cheeseburger to serve a hamburger. As we request a cheeseburger, I said, a hamburger. She always does this.

55 To me, might be considered demanding. That Alice grated cheese off, but decided, Hearing that Alice May spit in or otherwise, defiled, a burger. In some manner, a wise decision for, that was exactly what Alice was planning to do. Ha, ha ha. And so I just, I really like click. I think it has a really important message and barring a lot of the fart joke, type of humor that's in the movie II. Do not think this deserves a 6.4 know, you know, like that's the thing. It's not a great movie. She but I really think that everything that it does, it does very well. And the emotion towards the end of the movie is really earned and you know people have commented before on how Adam Sandler, when he does dramatic stuff, he's a really good actor and I think the earnestness coming from him and especially from Henry Winkler in that scene where, you know, I mean I think you know what scene I'm talking about. But he's fast forward to the point where like his dad is an old man and he's gonna die, and it's going to be the last time he sees his dad and he just outright reject spending time. With him and you have Young Adam Sandler like standing in the middle of this, kind of, you know, DVD fast forward scene of his own life, like shouting at his dad, like, please come back. I'm sorry.

10 Oh, my gosh, dude is like that's your right, dude. That scene wrecked me, so, so good. So yeah, man. I'm glad you put that one on here because even though it's not anywhere near approaching like a 10/10 movie. I definitely think it's above a 6.4. Yeah. And honestly, I figured I'd get you with that father-son relationship right off the bat, you know, me. So well, you know, me so well. So for my number five, Brad, I'm actually going to go into a genre of movie that we've we've, I don't want to say, we've avoided talking about on this show but we've really not dipped our toes into it. And that is the world of the quote-unquote, Christian movie, you know. Brad and I are, oh man, yeah Brad and I are both, you know, ostensibly pastors.

50 We've both worked in churches, we both went to Seminary, we have M divs A stamina sensibly, you know whether or not you're paid, I don't know. Movie that I want to talk about is a film that came out just a few years ago and it's called risen. And the concept of the movie is it's told from the perspective of a Roman Centurion who has basically been assigned to track down the body of Jesus after it disappears from the tomb. So it's told from the perspective of the Romans and the Romans think that Jesus's body has been stolen obviously. And it's you know, it's a fictional story and towards the end he discovers what really happened with Jesus and man, I gotta say so. Many of these like Cristiano movies.

31 Now are designed for the lowest common denominator they're made for no money. They have like very few, professional actors in them. Like if you've ever seen the God's Not Dead series, I apologize to you on behalf of Christians everywhere because it's horrific and horrendous. And this movie, I just feel like it had such a more Deft hand behind it. Like, the production values are there, but you can tell it's not like the biggest budget movie ever made, but like, It has real actors in it, which is a huge plus. And, you know, there's a really poignant scene towards the end of the film where that century and finds Jesus alive again and watching him kind of walk into this room where Jesus is teaching people and, and the reality of what's going on around him, setting in whether or not you're a Christian, whether or not you believe, in any of that, if you're able to, even take this story on face value for what it is, the places that the story is going.

29 I thought this was an incredibly rewarding movie. It's one of the very few in that sort of like contemporary Christian movie. Genres that I really enjoyed. So that's my number five. It's called risen. If it makes you feel any better? God is not dead. Has a 5.0 on IMDb versus the 6.3 that risen has. There it is, man. Both still failing grades in any glass in America, you know, but also, I will say, when you said, when you describe the movie as a Roman centurions, Trying to find Jesus. I really just now want to see a 1952 like knockoff of film Noir and have like this, like a private eye, like private eye who's been hired on the down low by King Herod to, like find Jesus.

18 The either that or we need like a National Treasure movie. That's set back in in Roman times and then you just have Nick Cage saying I'm gonna steal the body of Jesus and that's the, that's the hook. Yeah dude I am 100% in. All right man, what's your number for my number for movie Bob you. You kind of ruined it for me as you do a lot of things. Good signs has a 6.7. I hate to tell you that you were wrong about it went down since the last people that listen to our episode like went and bombed that IMDb account afterwards. Yeah, they must have it is a six point seven out of ten. I Probably should have done the work and looked up, what I gave it.

03 I think I gave it a 9, maybe an eight and a half that it's still Bonkers to me. Honestly, we don't need to spend much time talking about it. Hey, go watch the movie. Be go listen to the episode that we recorded on it because science is a phenomenal movie. And if you're willing to stop looking at Shyamalan as the twist director, if you're willing to start, looking at him as a director of human, And chips and and how humans deal with trauma. You will have a phenomenal experience with that movie. Yeah, so go check it out. All right, man, for my number four, I'm actually going to go with the movie that just came out what, 3 years ago now, and it made absolutely no dent in the box office and no one talked about it and the critics immediately dismissed it, but it was, it was positioned as kind of an Oscar e movie starring Hugh Jackman and the movies called the front-runner. And it's a true story about a politician. In the 1990s, late 80s, early 90s, I think who got caught up in a sex scandal and, you know, it ruined his whole his whole career and the way the movie unfolds, you kind of aren't sure at first, if he really is, you know, cheating on his wife and you find out obviously that he is, but it was such a clever movie to come out kind of at the time that it did, because it was released into a very charged political climate in 2018. But, it also, I don't know.

28 It's just so interesting to see the way. The way that they portrayed it and, you know, the factual elements of that story. I think the guy's name was Gary Hart to see what would bring a politician democrat or republican down in the 90s versus what would what brings a politician down now? Like it seems like such a minor little hiccup, you know, that would be like a bump in the road of a politician's journey. Now and I'll tell you what, man, I loved this movie, it might be in my opinion. The best performance Hugh Jackman has ever given. I thought that, you know, for the most part they Didn't try too hard to draw parallels to, you know, the political climate of 2018. There were a couple moments that I was like, all right, you could have cut that line, but I walked out of that movie, I gave it a 9 out of 10 and on IMDb it has a 6.1, so the critics didn't care for it.

15 The general public didn't care for it but almost everything about that movie worked for me. And again, if you're a fan of Hugh Jackman, I think you owe it to yourself just to watch that performance because it was really, really excellent. Yeah, I think that there is A fascination with tabloid type news that almost leads into this perverse place of like well if famous people are having Affairs then you know it's okay for us to do it too and like you said after 3040 years of that, we're finally at a place where you can get away with so much as a politician and the general Public's like me right.

57 You know, that's fine. It genuinely makes me think about the the local city councilman from dexhart from Parks and Rec like just just Google like best of debt Council councilman dexhart because he just says exemplifies the the parody of a politician who just doesn't give a ring. I love I love in one episode. His whole defense he goes like in my defense I was really horny and then Exactly. So let me ask you this bread. Before we move into our first whiskey for the day, have you seen or even heard of either of my first two movies on this list?

40 That would be a negatory, Robert? Okay. I didn't know if you might have heard of risen because of, you know, we're almost kind of circles. But I mean, I've heard of the word risen and I did, I would relate that to my Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ. And I have heard of a front-runner before. Usually it refers to somebody who's Like in the lead in a race. See there it is. So and it's a double meaning because it also means someone who is trying to deceive you and so, yeah. Do you get it? Mmm. Yeah, that's amazing man. They're so smart also, whoever named it should have taken over the subtitle, because the subtitle for the front-runner is the week, America went tabloid.

25 That's that's terrible. That's the worst tag line I've ever heard. It's, it might be the greatest though. All right. Think about it. Some more. Let's take a break. Let's try the first of these two whiskies. Which one do you want to jump into first, the buckwheat bourbon or the weeded bourbon? I mean, let's go for The Unique, man. I've never had a buck wheat bourbon. All right, let's get to it. All right, so the first one we're trying today is called the Morning Glory. This is a it's called a Kasha Bourbon and Brad. I have just literally just now just learned that Kasha is what you call Buckwheat when it has been toasted. So this is a bourbon that contains all of the essential bourbon ingredients and it also includes Kasha and then untoasted buckwheat as well. So the mash bill is composed of 66% corn, 12% ri6 10% Kasha and then 2% buckwheat 4% malt.

19 So if you consider the Kasha and the on toasted buckwheat two separate grains than we're dealing with a five grain Mash bill here Brad. This is a bottled and bond bourbon. So it's four years old, at least, four years old. This one was actually barreled in 2016. It looks like it was dumped in 2021, so it's five years old and it was aged in number two. Char barrels come in at 100 proof as bottled and bond Whiskey's do man. This has a beautiful color to it. Brad. Yeah. Yeah. The the I mean you can only say Amber and so many different ways but there's a depth of quality to this and the legs are just whoo. Yeah. Yeah, no man. I mean is a beautiful was really is the word though because it has this really nice almost like orangie kind of hue to it. I'm excited to give it a nose at a taste Brad. Why don't you tell me what you're picking up on the nose here honestly you get like a hint of caramel and vanilla and then you get all sorts of like toes. Did bread, not even bread.

18 You put in the toaster. I'm talking like a taken baked loaf of bread and you put in your oven and it comes out fresh and you, you bake it just a little too long. So the crust is as nice and crunchy, like, that's the kind of bread I'm thinking about here. I really love this knows. Yeah, for me, I think that the Rye and the molt really come out on this. Like it has, it doesn't smell like a young whiskey, but it has this kind of I don't know if there's a graininess to it, that is clearly not corn. You know what I mean? And I don't want to call like The Malt and the Rye likes our grains because that's not what I, what I'm getting here. There's just an earthiness to this one that it doesn't smell like a typical Bourbon, and I actually just took a sip of it as well. Brad.

02 And I again I get the Rye, I get The Malt, I don't really know what Kasha tastes like. So like, you know, I don't know if some of this kind of sweeter nuttiness is coming from the corn or if it's coming from the buckwheat. But this reminds Have a whiskey. We had about a year ago on the podcast from the laws. Company out in Colorado. We also did one with old elk on that episode and one of those companies had a high malt bourbon, this really reminds me of that bread. Yeah, there's there's a, it's escaping me, the exact way to describe this. There's just something earthy and grainy about it, that is beautiful and, and sometimes that's an indicator of a young whiskey. But I think When you keep the grain flavor on an older whiskey, you know, this one's age at least five years, there's something about that, that age is really nicely, and I love this stuff, man.

57 And it's always nice when we get something that is kind of outside the norm or like out of the regular wheelhouse of, you know, a whiskey category. And this is that for sure, this is really unique. Yeah, something that friend of shows, Scott's our has often said, is like once you drank enough, classic Bourbons. Kind of drink them all. And so at a certain point you just start looking for a unique, interesting, flavor, profiles and spirit of French Lick is done it here. All right. Well, we're off to a good start with spirits of French, Lick, why don't we get back into our top five? So for my number three, movies that I love, but I'm DB hates, I am looking at perhaps the greatest franchise of all time.

42 We're talking about George Lucas's, Star Wars, and Bob, you've known for a long time that I love the prequels. I think that they are criminally underrated Star Wars episode one. I honestly was surprised about this. I thought it was going to be lower. It has exactly a six point five out of ten on IMDb, which I was really happy about because I was expecting it to be like a 4.5, the way people talk about it, right? For me, I love episode 1. I even going back and watching it now as an adult. I think that there is so much to enjoy about the World building, that Lucas does I enjoy you and McGregor a lot?

25 I think that the kid who plays Anakin isn't nearly as bad as what a lot of people say, he is overall. I really love this movie. I would probably give it in the same vein as click a seven and a half to an eight. It's obviously not a perfect movie, is there. There is some Awkwardness to the film. That just comes. When you have Lucas directing, I'm not a Star Wars fan boy to the point where every one of the movies is a 10 out of 10. My best friend in the world, he will, he will argue till the day he dies, that his favorite. Six movies are the top, are the Star Wars prequels and and originals. And so for him it's just a matter of where within the top six does this fall, I'm not the not. At that point, there's a few movies better than Star Wars, episode one just a few, just a few. But all that being said, I really love episode 1. I know it is, you are not a fan of it, but I think it's, I think it's worth more than a 6.5.

26 Well, good for, you know, I will say this, like, I truly think that movie is awful like really bad, but I'm not gonna poop on your pick here. Because what, I think that I figured out is that when you talk about the prequels, I mean, everyone knows and agrees that the third one is the best one, right? Like episode 3. Yeah, is Head and Shoulders above the other two and it's really just a matter of like do you think it's good or do you think it's great but then with the other two I feel like people really stick up for one or the other like people are really a fan of the first one or really a fan of the second one and there's not much crossover like if you love episode one you probably don't like episode 2 that much and I re-watched all the prequels about a year ago with my wife as she can, she's never seen the prequels before. And like for me episode 1 is a 2 hour movie that I could have sworn was eleven point five hours long and we watched it in one sitting and like we were checking our like our phones for the time.

25 I'd say 15 minutes into the movie like it just it never worked for me but episode 2. I was like why do people hate this? Like I really really liked that movie a lot. So I'm kind of with you like my pick would be the second one, but I understand that, you know, I understand the impulse to stick up for one of these movies fascinatingly enough, both episode 1 and 2 have a 6.5 on IMDb yeah, that sounds about right. But I'm sure that it's from like two completely different camps of people to yes 100% All right, over my number three Brad, I'm picking a movie that I think some people will have seen in some people like you have probably never heard of. It's a movie that stars, Matt Damon.

06 It's from director, Steven Soderbergh. So, I like it has some Prestige behind it but it is just like an out-and-out comedy. It's a farce, it's called the informant. All right, so it's about this guy who is basically a whistleblower against his giant Corporation and he wants to work with the FBI. And he really wants to be like an FBI agent, like he sees on TV. TV. And as the movie unfolds, what you find is like not only is this guy the most bumbling informant ever. But that he's been making everything up and it's a true story and they play the whole thing for Laughs. It's like it's really compelling. Matt, Damon is a way better comedic actor than I think, any of us would have probably expected.

48 I mean, if you've seen the oceans movies, then you know that like he has good comic timing. But in this movie, he is playing such a hapless loser and The way that you play that and make it actually funny is to play it completely straight. Like he's playing this character, as if this is a serious drama and the re and because he's playing it. So seriously, it makes everything even more funny. He seems like a real good guy. I hope he doesn't mind me calling him Brian. Instead of Aging Shepherd. I might even try Bry out. This must be very different for him. Talking to a guy like me instead of a bank robber or a drug dealer. I could see us fishing or whatever. What a good listener?

29 You'll meet one of those every day. This movie just totally worked for me. I enjoyed the hell out of it. It's a short movie. I think, you know, if you find it on Netflix, if it's streaming anywhere, you really should watch the informant. Super enjoyable, what do you think you would give it out of 10? Well, on IMDb I gave it an eight, so somewhere between an eight and a nine, like, you know, it's kind of reminds me of, like, Chef in that way, the movie that we just reviewed. Because, like, there's a ceiling for movies like this. Like, I don't, If I would ever give this movie a 10 out of 10 just because I don't really know like what a 10/10 version of this looks like. But in terms of like sheer enjoyment like as an eight and a half, it's a great movie. It feels like there's a limit that just an enjoyable movie can hit, right?

15 Like it. Like, there's something about a movie that in order to give it a 10 out of 10. It has to really like move you personally or challenge what you thought Cinema could do or Something along those lines, where something like this. It's just it's just entertaining. It's just funny and a good time and the most it could ever get is like an eight eight and a half. All right man, let's move into our number two picks, you're on board and you're on board. You're up to bat up to hopefully a knock this one. Out of the park. Shut up Bob. My number two movie is Tree of Life. Oh nice Terrence Malick. Knocked this one out.

57 The park to continue the baseball metaphor. Hey, I do this movie is wildly, good. It has a six point eight on IMDb, which out of all of my top five. This one, I understand the most art house is not built for the general population. It's it genuinely is built simply for the director and for the actors working on it and it works for some people and it doesn't work for everybody. But it works for me. I give it a 9 out of 10. I think this is probably the biggest gap for me and my top five from where I'm at to, where I am DB is, and I understand it and I'm okay with it.

40 I just think that the story of Grace versus punishment is told so beautifully and watching the transition in the main character. When he grows to understand how his evil actions affect his family. It's just it's just brilliant and it's moving and it challenges you and forces you to think and I love it. Yeah man. Nothing to add to that one. For my number two, I'm going to really steer us into territory that we don't go into on this podcast and that is like the outright horror movie. I don't watch a ton of horror movies. Brad, I know you don't really watch any horror movies. I feel like I can handle some and then others are just too kind of traumatic for me to watch. I'm going to talk about a movie that came out in 2007 and it's Old Paranormal Activity.

29 Now this movie spawned four thousand sequels that all suck. However, the original Paranormal Activity is so fucking good like practice movie. I made the mistake of thinking like yeah, I'm going to turn on this movie at 2:00 in the morning. I was bored one night and I watched this movie by myself, in a dark room at 2 a.m. and that was one of the worst mistakes I've ever made. Because I You like this movie really kind of kick-started or re kick-started the found-footage genre, that was kind of popularized by The Blair Witch Project, and the whole conceit of this movie is just like these people have cameras set up in their house because they think that there's something going on and you just watched like really eerie things happen and then the end of the movie happens and it's like yep that I should have seen that coming.

22 But what I loved about this movie because it is such a shoestring budget. But most of what's really scary is what you don't see. Like when a character leaves the frame, you're like, what's going on out there because you might hear something and it is infinitely more terrifying. Than if you saw some like cheap CGI thing on screen, this movie scared me down to my bones and I think again, it's because they leave so much up to your imagination. One of the scariest movies I've ever seen. I tell everyone that I talked to you about it and I get so many I rolls because horror fans Eight Paranormal Activity. I don't understand why I think this is like a prime example of how to take no budget and make an independent movie and just like make the hell out of it. It's a great movie.

09 It scared the hell out of me. It's my number two pick, dude. All I gotta say is I'm not watching it, won't do it. You can't make me. I get it. Honestly, I watched a movie on Netflix month or two ago and it was a similar situation. I was like kind of tire but not Quite going to bed. It was like I don't know, 10:30 or 11 and I was looking through Netflix I saw a movie that I remember hearing about and I thought looked intriguing and so I turned it on it. I can't remember the name of it right now. It's Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams and he is a novelist and he sent so this. Nocturnal animals, bro. That was one of the most terrifying movies I've ever watched.

56 Let's not even know who I am. Right. Sorry this is a genuine on a Content warning, bad stuff happens in this movie. If you don't like bad stuff happening, maybe don't listen for a second. Yep. The movie is about a family being forced off the road in the middle of Texas and the wife and child are dragged away raped and murdered and they show it in about as much a graphic way as they can. Bob it is Of the worst things I've ever watched in my life. And there is nothing redeeming about it. There was no, there is no way shape or form that this was redeeming in the end. I hate that movie, I would get give it a 10 out of 10, I recognize that there's a lot of good stuff they do in it. It is not a poorly made film, but it's a 1 out of 10 for me. And how does that relate to the Paranormal Activity thing? I'd probably give that a 10 out of 10 to maybe a 2 out of 10 if people don't get raped and murdered. Yeah, I mean there's definitely murder Yeah. Yeah.

58 Well, great on that note, man. I feel like spirits of French like a really going to hate us because we keep segueing awkwardly into their, their Whiskey In other news, right? Very good whiskey. Let's take a break. Let's try this second spirits of French Lake whiskey. What do you say? Let's do it. Bob Bob our second whiskey from the spirits of French Lick. Is there William? Dalton bobbled and bond. We did bourbon. This one. I am really excited about. I've already been nosing it a little bit. It's got a beautiful, beautiful smell. The mash. Bill comes in at 70% corn, 20% wheat and 10% to row caramel malts. Now, Bob, I have not heard of to row, caramel malt. Don't know what makes it different from one row, caramel malt but so far, I'm really excited. About it.

52 What I'm most excited for here and they noted this in all of their press materials as well, is that they're using caramel malt to add a little bit more sweetness to this whole thing. I'm really, really excited for this man. Yeah, when I get into the nose, this is one of the most beautifully sweet whiskeys. I've ever smelled like the caramel. If you told me that you just melted down a little bit of caramel and pour it in my glass, I'd be like, yeah, 100% totally makes sense to me. Let's drink it. I will say that it does still have a little bit of that. Note, we were picking up on the first whiskey that it's like, it doesn't smell young, but it just smells like kind of intensely grainy.

32 Does that make sense? Yeah, it really does. There's just this kind of foundational level of grain to this that you're right. You're not getting away from it from that buckwheat. No, no maybe. I mean maybe it'll be different on the taste. So let's give it a sip bread. But that's that's really nice. Honestly, it reminds me a little bit of an Irish whiskey. It's just got this like brightness. There's a little bit of fruitiness going on. I don't know, like a honeydew or a melon type of feel to it. It's very soft. There's not as much caramel as I thought they would be. Hmm.

12 Are you getting very much? No, I'm not. And I gotta say this one kind of tastes Young To Me Brad. Like even though it's four years, Old now on the buck wheat bourbon, all their press materials noted that they use a number two Char. So like when you buy barrels, you can get them, charred to a specific like level of char alligator Char, because of what it looks like on the inside. That's like the most charge, you can get if you're plotting, it all out on the Spectrum. And I wonder if the lack of contact with like really deep Char is kind of what is, is causing these to taste a little young to me. Now, I don't know if they use number two barrels on this one or not, but like, it has those same kind of young grain notes to me on the taste and I wouldn't expect it at this age.

00 Yeah, I'm with you man. Both of them have just a little bit of that young taste that I don't enjoy as much and maybe it's not young, maybe it's just the charring process that you just talked about. But overall, I think that they have really interesting flavor profiles. I think the buckwheat Fascinating, but I'm kind of with you. I think that there's just some a little hint of something missing for me in these whiskeys now. I like the uniqueness of it but whenever you go unique in a whiskey there's a chance that the uniqueness isn't going to work for someone. I wouldn't go as far as to say, it doesn't work for me. It's just not necessarily the first thing I would grab for off the shelf.

43 Yeah, totally agree. I will say like, at the end of the day I am always down to Champion a A small producer or a small distiller. I think what the the foundations of these whiskies are. Excellent. I just think that like if you, if you put him in like a number for Char and aged him for six years they would be mind blowing. You know what I mean? Yeah, I think a little more time in the barrel. Would do these some good but but hey, I Spirits a French Lick is putting out really great stuff. All right, well, we want to say thanks to the spirits of French Lick for sending us both of these bottled and bond Bourbons. Brad. Let's reveal our number one picks. Bob my number one pick for a movie that I love just dearly just absolutely adore. And I am DB gives a six point five out of ten. The Santa Claus.

38 Oh nice, body more. I think that Tim. Tim Allen is just the most perfect reluctant Santa Claus that could ever exist. I think that the the Of the movie is nearly perfect. The, the way you have the estranged, dad, trying to connect with his son, who's at an age where he has no idea how to connect to him. The way they play off him. You know, burning the Christmas dinner, it flies into that Trope of, like, you know, incompetent father, but I don't think it does it in such a way that is hokey or, or, I don't know, unoriginal, the the Seen at Denny's the joke that he that literally always gets me.

26 Is when he goes, come on, we're going to Denny's. It's an all American establishment and then there's just the massive business party of Japanese business. Men arguing with each other, that, that cutaway just gets me every single time. I love Santa Claus, I think it's very touching by the end of it, the way he connects with his son, it's a beautiful movie. I'd probably give it like A to an eight and a half, you know, it's not it falls into the vein of what we talked about was chef and the front-runner, you know, it's an enjoyable, fun, Christmas movie that I really love and I was amazed to see that it has a 6.5 on IMDb.

08 So two quick thoughts on the the Santa Claus. The first is it is in this this group of like mid 90s, Christmas movies, that are very weirdly like way too adult for children like theirs. There's a lot of jokes in this movie that are very much for the parents, like, the movie starts with Santa Claus falling off a roof and dying, like Tim Allen is responsible for manslaughter for murdering Santa and then covers up his crime by taking the mantle of Santa Claus upon himself. It's a it's a it's a very adult movie. He falls off the roof and then he waves at Tim Allen and then he just, he just kind of gives it's a Yoda death, man. He gives up the ghost.

50 Yeah, he got really old. He was tired of delivered presents and so he just disappeared. All right, Yoda. I mean, it just kind of reminds me of jingle all the way in that, in that fashion like that movie. I mean, like, a man blows up police officers with a bomb. It's just, it's very weird to watch that movie with a child in 2022. The second thought I have on the Santa Claus is unrelated to the movie, but but the title of the film is so clever that it actually ruined. A whole generation of Americans on how to properly spell Santa Claus is named because I see everyone. Now, spell Santa Claus with an e on the end. That's not how Santa Claus is spelled. The reason the movie is called, The Santa Clause is that there is a clause in Santa's contract that like when Santa dies, the mantle gets taken up by somebody else. And that Clause is the reason that Tim Allen becomes, you know, Kris Kringle but it's just so funny because I feel like we've all seen the cover.

52 That VHS so many times that everyone just thinks that that's how Santa Claus is name is spelled. Now, it's on my father'd. Me. My movie Changed History, it sure it sure did, man. All right, Brad for my number one II didn't want to do this at number one because I'm really setting myself up for a disappointment here, but it's a movie that's going to be coming up later in season 5 and it's a movie called young adult. This is a film that stars Charlize Theron. It's directed by Jason. Reitman. Who was really just coming off of Juno? Like, Juno gets nominated for best picture. He gets nominated for best director, the screenwriter Diablo. Cody wins the Oscar for the screenplay and then this is like their next big project together.

37 And this movie is like a dark comedy to the extreme. It's not like a dark comedy in that like people are getting murdered or anything like that, but it's just like it is so hard edged. It's so cynical. Like I don't want to call it mean-spirited but it Of is and the thing that I love about this movie is the main character played by Charlize Theron. She was basically like the most popular thing in high school. She was the the person that everyone worshipped and she's just a jerk about it. And now, her life is spinning out of control at like age, 35 or whatever and she moves back to her hometown and doesn't realize that everyone kind of knows that her life is spinning out of control, and is trying to re-establish herself as like hot and And ruins a bunch of people's lives in the process, but her character reminds me so much of Scarlett, O'Hara.

29 And when we talked about Gone With the Wind, one of the things we mentioned was like, what is the character Arc for Scarlett? O'Hara? Like she gets everything She Wants. Does she even change at the end of the movie? And I think this movie kind of keeps that in mind where they really do kind of go for like the gut, punch cynical ending, and I love it for it. I'm super excited for you to watch this movie. Brad. It's 10/10 movie, for me. At least it has been when I wash it in the past, it is not a 10 out of 10 on IMDb. And I just, I can't wait to hear what you think because I really feel like you could go either way on this movie. Yeah. The the way you've described it, I'm intrigued and interested but it feels like a common enough Trope that I'm worried that it actually isn't good and you're just crazy.

18 All right, cool. Well, well I guess we'll find out. So that's my number. One movie and that's my little tease for down the road in season 5. When we get around to young adult.
