Season 10 Bracket Challenge (Part 2): Chaos & Coin Flips

The bracket chaos continues.

In Part 2 of the Film & Whiskey Season 10 Bracket Challenge, Bob and Brad take the field from 16 films down to four—and things get messy fast. What starts as thoughtful film debate quickly spirals into coin flips, upsets, and pure cinematic anarchy.

Along the way, the guys go head-to-head on legendary matchups like Vertigo vs. Star Wars, Pulp Fiction vs. Rear Window, and Casablanca vs. Singin’ in the Rain—all while sipping mystery whiskies pulled from the depths of Bob’s cabinet.

It’s film theory vs. vibes. Structure vs. chaos. And somehow… Star Wars might break the bracket.

02 Today on the Film and Whiskey podcast, we are continuing the season 10 bracket and apparently we're drinking some surprise whiskeys as well. That's all ahead on Film and Whiskey. Well, hey there everybody. Welcome into the Film and Whiskey Podcast. I'm Bob Book. I'm Brad. Gee. And Brad, we are coming at Film and Whiskey Nation with another special bonus episode.

45 Bonus episode. I love it, man. Because this is Part 2 of the Season 10 Bracket challenge. Folks, if this is your first time joining us, why? Why is this the one you chose? Part 2 of the Season 10 bracket. I have to give so much context to catch you up. I'd recommend just just press stop, go back one episode and let past Bob give you that context. Because folks, we want to dive right in. Today. We started with 32 movies. We only got down to 16 last time around, and today we're trying to go from 16 through the round of eight and get down to just our final four films. So we have a lot of picks to do.

25 Brad suggested drinking some whiskey. Folks, I'll be honest with you, nobody has sent us any new whiskeys to review in a while. So he said we should just grab something off our shelves and and try it out. So Brad, what did you pick to sip on tonight as we get into this bracket? As a true whiskey drinker in America ought to do. I'm drinking Scotch, Bob. I'm drinking Tam. Do 12 comes in this fancy box. I want to see you like just open the lid of the box and take the cork out, but not take it out-of-the-box and just pour it still in taste. In the box, it's just like that is that is how I pour my whiskey when it when it comes in a box.

09 I believe I am also drinking Scotch bread, though I can't say for sure. So a year or two ago, our friend Zach Johnston gave us a whole bunch of whiskeys to try. We were very eager about trying a lot of them on the show. I have now accepted that we will simply never, I might not never drink these whiskeys as long as I live, Brad. But yeah, I spent a long time cataloging these whiskeys, and there were these tiny little vials amongst the whiskeys that look like this. If you're on the Patreon, you can see how small these things are. They're very tiny and they are, they're kind of Scotch colored. Like they're pretty clear. There's not much color to them and there is no label on them except on the very bottom.

50 Some of them have tiny, tiny letters. One says GC1 says FB1 says PC, and one just says B. And I've believe me dude, I've tried Googling it. I don't. I have no idea what this is. So I'm trying 4 mystery liquids tonight Brad. And that's all I know at this point. OK, we're going to ask ChatGPT about this. Bob, What? What are the labels again? FBTC one just says. BB. And. GCGC. All right, let's see what. ChatGPT says it's going to be wrong. It's going to pull a whole bunch of stuff out of its butt here. No, ChatGPT can never be wrong, Bob. All right, Short answer, those letter codes alone aren't enough to confidently identify a Scotch brand, but we can make some educated guesses.

44 Nope, PC could be port. Charlotte. I do like Port Charlotte, yeah. If it's a heavily peded line, it might be the bruclotic B could. Be so that might be. More Oh yeah. Or B could, yeah. GC. Yeah. Probably wouldn't be Glenn Morgan. Glenn something. Yeah, Glenn. Yeah, it's gotta be Glenn. Something it. Has to be like one big Scotch producer that owns a lot of brands and it's like all their brands but. Yeah, I don't know, probably. It's probably $1000 whiskey and I have no idea. In any case, Brad, we're not here to really talk about the whiskey much tonight at all. We're here to talk about our bracket. And folks, if you are watching on the Patreon, I'm gonna share my screen for a second so you can see where we're at in the film and whiskey bracket. And here we are, man.

33 We are entering the round of 16 here. Brad. I think we should just go ahead and dive right in. We've got our number one overall seed, Vertigo, going up against Brad's favorite movie of all time, the number 16 seed Star Wars. Over to you, Brad. Break this one down for me. Man O man, Vertigo all time classic Bob. I mean it is just I would say the epitome of like Hitchcockian mystery and colors and the blocking in the movie is beyond spectacular. I like, I remember watching Vertigo as a teenager for the first time and like having nightmares being terrified. It was like a a truly horrifying movie. Great great film.

25 Star Wars, maybe the most impactful movie ever released on the history of cinema. Tell me I'm wrong, Bob. I mean, it's close, definitely close, man. Yeah. Listen, this was easy for me. Vertigo's moving on in the Bob book bracket. Now I, I will say I'm looking at your vibes based list, your heart rankings, and Star Wars is your #2 film Vertigo's number 3. So this really is as easy as you might make it sound to move Star Wars on here, and this is a pretty close call for you, I would think. Dude Vertigo's is one of my favorite movies of all time. Definitely on my it's probably in my like 5th to 10th favorite movie of all time.

08 I don't know if Star Wars Episode 4 is quite that high. So like vibes for Star Wars is higher. I think overall though, if I had to rank my top 10 movies of all time, I think Vertigo might be higher on that list. I am going to move Vertigo on I, I. Think it's. I think it's. The right decision. Do you feel pressured to do this like I? Don't feel pressured. Honestly, if I feel anything, Bob, I feel pressured to choose Star Wars just for the chaos, because I just for the point of view. I feel like, you know the one, the number one seed getting defeated by the 16 would never happen in any other bracket. I'm picking Star Wars.

53 Star Wars is moving on, Bob. Dude, and just just for that, I have poured out a whole vial of PC for you my friend. And I got to say this smells fantastic. Brad. It's it's Granny Smith apple for days. I wish you were here to experience. Is it is it Scotch or is it something else? I want to say Scotch, Brad. OK. You drank a lot. I was. Going to say Scotch I trust a little smoky. It's. I'm going to say Scotch. Watch it be like a mescal or something. I have no idea, you know. Here I will say Film Whiskey Nation, here's an update for you. I did flip the Coin of Destiny about 50 times after our first bracket episode and I would say there is a slight lean towards heads.

41 Now I, I don't know if that means that it's actually towards tails 'cause I always flip, flip the coin in the air and then do the flip onto my hand. So I don't know that, you know, I don't know if that technically means that it is weighted towards tails. Either way, start with the coin with the same orientation before flipping. No, OK, I, I don't now I will say I, I tried doing different things like flipping it a little higher than normal or a little less and that like helped with the variability. So I, I think we're working with an OK coin. I I don't think it is weighted. I don't know that we'll need a coin flip for this one, but you never know because Brad has established that he is an enemy of the movie musical.

25 And that's my Segway into the. Hold on what? I picked Star Wars. We have to flip the coin of destiny. No, you didn't. You said you're moving Vertigo. Yeah. And then I thought about it and I was like, there's no chance that a #16 seed ever again will have the opportunity to beat the number one seed. And I picked Star Wars. You did not 100%. You know what? I'm picking Star Wars. I thought we were going to skate by here, you bastard. All right, we're going to flip the coin of destiny, which has a slight lean as we all do. A slight lean in One Direction. Vertigo's going to be heads.

05 Vertigo wins my bracket and I'm voting against. Him. Why are you doing this? Why you? This is just for chaos. Chaos, baby. Vertigo's heads, Star Wars is tails Brad to ruin both of our brackets. Flip that coin. Is it really? Is it Tales? It is the first tales that we've had for the whole brackets. I think you've established what you're going to do for the rest of the bracket. Now you're just going to flip Star Wars against every movie just to see like Harvest. To see what happens, like, yeah.

51 Yeah, exactly. God, I hate you man. Why did you do that? There's no reason for you to do that because Bob. Our brackets are boring at the end of the day. It ends up being like 1/2, 3:00 and 5:00. Every season. We need, we need a Cinderella. Cinderella we we need somebody from the Mac to get into the Final four. Here it's it's funny that I say we need a Cinderella Man. We literally have a Cinderella Man. We do, we do. All right, let me get to the next match up here. It's the number 9 overall seed. West Side Story up against #8 The Tree of Life. Now that would mean that if there is a coin flip, the Tree of life will be heads as the eight seed. Brad, this was not that difficult for me.

33 But as we established, you are a hater of the movie musical and all things good. And so the Tree of Life, I think I said in the last episode, it's like it's a movie that I can kind of sit on a shelf and acknowledge as a 10. I don't get like a ton of enjoyment watching that movie. And there are there are moments of true beauty and awe in that movie, but I think beginning to end, West Side Story is just a much more impactful experience for me. Yeah, I and I totally understand that. I, I think West Side Story is one of the best musicals ever made. I just, I don't know, man. I think the older I get, the more I feel intrigued by weird, artsy like stories that have a meaningful thing to say about the human experience. I think that Tree of Life has that in absolute spades and I am going to move Tree of Life forward. Of course you are.

28 So we're going to have back-to-back coin flips on a day where we are already going to run long on this episode. You're like, let's, let's grind this baby to a halt. Why not? Tree of Life is heads, West Side Story is tails. You are going to really screw up my bracket my friend. Flip that coin. Bob, we have two tails in a row. I'll take it. I I I can't get her to go back, but I can move West Side Story on into the round of eight. That takes us to the bottom left quadrant. This one might not need much debate, Brad, as much as we love the number 13 seed, Amadeus, it's going up against the number four overall seed.

17 And I believe your number one overall seed, Pulp Fiction. Yeah, dude. Pulp Pulp Fiction. Just I don't know what it was this time around. It checked all the boxes for me. I it still isn't once again similar to Vertigo. It probably would be in like my 5 to 10, fifth to 10th best overall movie range. So it's it's not like I have the passion for it, but it could easily win any individual season of our show. So I for me, this is an easy pick. Pulp Fiction. Yeah, for me too. And I love Amadeus. But like, again, if we're talking about movies that changed the course of movie history, yeah, Pulp Fiction's kind of a no brainer here.

58 So after 2 long debates, we have one very quick one, getting the number four seed Pulp Fiction into the round of eight. And this will finalize the left side of the bracket here, Brad, the number 12 overall seed, the Treasure of the Sierra Madre, going up against the number 5 seed, Rear Window. Now I will. I'm just telling you now, I will be a ride or die for Rear Window, I think, on this side of the bracket from here on out because I think that is just frankly, a perfect movie. Yeah. And even even in the next round when I would like to think it will go up against Pulp Fiction, I think I'm going to pick it there too because I think Pulp Fiction is a great, slightly unwieldy movie. And Rear Windows, just like a freaking well oiled machine that just extracts suspense from you.

45 So we don't even have to talk about that now, because it's up against The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, a movie that I love dearly, but that it just doesn't hold the candle to Rear Window in my mind. Dude, not at all. Rear window is like, once again, we're we're we're kind of whittling away the chaff and we are getting towards the cream of the crop. What, what would you say is your favorite Walter Houston quote from Treasure of the Sierra Madre? Because he's he has some incredible ones. All I keep coming back to is when he's doing his little like hop skip and he's like you're Dumber than the dumbest Jackass. Like it's just a great like of all the you're dumb quotes, you're Dumber than the dumbest Jackass is top tier. You're dumb.

31 It's so. Freaking good dude. I love when he's talking to the guys and he's like, hey you fellas, now how about some beans? You want some beans going through some mighty rough country tomorrow? You better. Have he's trying to break up a fight by like, dangling beans in front of people, yes. It's. Incredible, dude. I freaking love that movie, dude. I'm sorry to see it go into the fiery abyss, but Rear Window must move on here. And so we've got our first half of the round of eight locked in Star Wars, West Side Story, Pulp Fiction and Rear Window. I like that. I've been talking a lot this episode. I know that you have the bracket on your end. I would like for you to intro the right side of our bracket so that I can sit back and enjoy my pour of BBB. You got the.

18 You got the B, Bob, just B. On the right side of the bracket, we have our number two overall seed 12 angry Men going up against the number 18 seed and a real, you know, underdog story, if you will, Cinderella Man Bob I, I feel like once again, this this is where the bracket just kind of, you know, the, the one through 4 seed kind of has an easy row the first two rounds, as it should be. Cinderella Man is a great movie. It is a stirring film. It ought to it deserves more recognition than it gets. It's not 12 Angry Men.

00 It's I don't. I don't have Ron Howard's book up here on my ledge. I have Sidney Lumetz. You do have Sidney Lumetz. Have you read it yet? I haven't I I really want to. I bought myself a copy of it about a year ago and I also haven't read it. I think we should have Film and Whiskey book club next season dude, and that could be our bonus episodes is just going through Sidney Lumetz book. Dude, we'll do a Patreon book club. Patreon Book Club. We'll do a giveaway, will buy a new Patreon, member a copy of the book, and you can join the book club. But I love it dude. We're moving into books and whiskey for season 11. I freaking love it man.

42 Wine my only. Remaining question, right. My only remaining question about this matchup is do you think that James J Braddock could could take all 12 men in the jury room if you just put him in there? Like the old man's dead immediately and the little share of glasses is dead immediately, but there's like 10 able bodied men in there that I think might be able to gang up and and defeat Jim Braddock. That's a good question man. Are we talking about like pre broken hand got real strong working on the docks? Braddock, are we talking? We're talking about the same one that faces Max Baer at the end of the movie, Dings and all. I I think overcoming 10 men would be hard. I think if you put Max, I think if you put Max, Baer and Brad in the room.

35 Just like 1 uppercut to each guy and they're all dead. And it's, it's like a bad like action movie where they're coming one at a time and he's just boom, boom, boom. Like Popeye? Yeah, dude. Yes, dude. Max Baer would have been a great if there's ever a live action Popeye, who's the actor who was? There was a live action Popeye, but we don't need to talk about that right now, Brad. That's another bonus episode. Why did we ever think that that was a good idea? All right, we're moving down into the next match up, the number 10 overall seed, The Great Escape up against #7 Inglourious Basterds. This is a really hard match up for me, Brad, because I've really gone back and forth on Inglourious Basterds in our time on the show here.

21 I think I was at like a six out of 10 the first time we watched it, and this time I was at like a nine out of 10. I, I do think that it's one of Tarantino's best. I also think it's one of Tarantino's most indulgent, along with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It's not one of my favorite Tarantino's. It's just one that I kind of like, appreciate and respect a little more than I love. And I think that opens the door for me for The Great Escape, a movie that is very solidly a nine out of 10 and nothing more than that, but like one of the best. I'm going to fall asleep with a window open on a Saturday afternoon and this movie's playing in the background and I wake up and it's still on and I'm like, dope, let's watch these guys try to escape.

03 Steve's jumping over a barbed wire fence. It's crazy. Yeah, dude, I don't know what to do here, Brad. I'd like to hear your opinion, Bob. You're silly. Inglourious Basterds has one of the absolute greatest opening scenes of all time. Like True Bar None has one of the most incredibly dark and intimidating villains of all time who also pulls a little bit of a comedic edge. Right. The lows of Inglorious Basterds are like the midpoints of The Great Escape. And there's not many lows in Inglorious Basterds.

45 Like for me this is an easy easy pick. I think Shoshanna out acts any human being who's in the Great Escape like this is an easy easy pic of inglorious Basterds. Man, my head says you're right. My heart says the great escape. And your heart is not saying anything, it is singing. Real quick, one more point. Against Inglorious Basterds? Not really. Against, Obviously. Tarantino is hugely influenced by The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. It's his favorite movie of all time. That movie was on TV the other night and I watched the opening couple scenes and I forgot about that first scene with the villain Lee Van Cleef, where he goes to that family's farmhouse and there's hardly any dialogue spoken. So it is different than Tarantino, but over the course of like 15 minutes, you watch this terrified family come to understand that this guy's going to kill everybody in the house. And he does that.

47 And I was like, oh, it's the beginning of Inglourious Basterds. Tarantino just took his his favorite scene from his favorite movie and redid it with Christoph Waltz and a giant tobacco. If if Coogler can steal the entirety of well, what movie is it If. He can steal the entire movie of From Dusk Till Dawn. I think we can forgive 1 scene for Tarantino. Brad, I I'm sorry. I'm gonna make you do a coin flip. I'll get the great Escape more. Yeah, I just. I think you're right. But I also like you. You'd screwed me on Star Wars, so I. Knew this was coming. Flip this. Coin Yeah, let's see, the Great Escape is gonna be tails.

28 So Inglorious Basterds heads and Great Escape tails, Brad, just for the hell of it, flip that coin. All right, we have another heads. There you go, it all worked out at the end. I went to bat for my movie. You did. I'm proud of you, Bob. All right, so 12 Angry Men and Inglourious Basterds will be facing off against each other in the round of eight. And that takes us to our last two matchups in this round, the number three overall seed Casablanca up against the 14 seed The Lion King, a film which once again, I, I think that's the first movie I remember going to see in the movie theater. I was like 4 years old, not even four years old. Yeah, I, I know that I saw movies in my zero to 10 years old.

23 The first movie I really remember going to see in the theaters was Monsters, Inc when I would have been 10 or 11. So it came out 2001. And that like that's a great, what a great memory. Great movie, dude. And yet I think this is pretty obvious, man. I'm I'm riding Casablanca here. Sorry Lion King, we will dangle you over the edge like Mufasa and drop you into the herd of wildebeests. Now here's the real question. Am I going to be scar and hurl Casablanca into the wildebeests? No you're not, because you had Casablanca going really far in your your bracket as well. And you don't. Like The Lion King that much? I had Vertigo going real far, Bob. I don't like Lion King that much. That's true.

07 That's true. I don't Casablanca. Is safe for this round. I would. It is. Yeah, it is. All right. That takes us to our last match up here, which I think may be another coin flip, Brad, because we're talking about a movie that you apparently loathe the number 11 seed singing in the rain up against the number six seed. Some like it hot. A movie that we did have conversation about last episode and both said it's it's a perfect movie. The problem here is that I kind of also think that Singing in the Rain is a perfect movie and just a vessel for God to impart the divine gift of joy unto mankind. Except for you. Bob, this is this is a classic Goodfellas experience where I I gave this movie at 8.5. Like I I like singing in the rain. I'm just not like, captivated by its spell. There are certain films where it's like almost more insulting that you found it to be an 8 point, but I'd rather you'd be like, it didn't work for me 5 out of 10 then like it's pretty good.

08 Yeah, it's that's like how who lands on? It's pretty good. I mean, it's a pretty good. Movie. I like it it. It entertained me. OK, so fair to say you moved some like it hot on here. Oh, obviously some like it hot, OK. I'm gonna, I'm gonna force a coin flip. The thing is that I don't care if some like a hot wins here 'cause I I do love that movie. I just like genuinely, truly think Singing in the Rain deserves is on like a Mount Rushmore of all time movies and not for Brad. So whoa, A. Top four movie all time. Not necessarily for me, but if you look through the history of like the sight and sound pools and like the French auteurs and movie critics down through the years, it is like, I'm telling you, it's like Citizen Kane one or two out, like Tokyo Story, maybe Singing in the Rain is in there. It is just considered like an auteurist masterpiece that deserves to be studied until the Earth explodes someday like it is.

09 I'm sorry, I don't understand that. That's wild. I think we should flip the coin. All right, I think some might get hot as heads here, as the sixth seed singing in the rain will be tails for perhaps the most consequential 1 yet. Brad, flip that coin. See, now we're getting a little variety. We have tails again. Singing in the Rain pulls out the upset. Brad clearly pissed on his end over there, and I love it, folks. So that completes our round of eights. Now, I'll go back to the beginning to read these.

49 We've got Star Wars against West Side Story, Pulp Fiction versus Rear Window 12, Angry Men against Inglourious Basterds, and Casablanca versus Singing in the Rain. Brad, I think that is a perfect time for us to press pause. Let's take a quick break here and then we'll come back and do our round of eight. What do you say? I'm ready man. Let's do it. All right, we're jumping back into the bracket in the round of eight. I, you know, honestly, Brad, for having three coin flips in the round of 16, we moved through that pretty briskly. And I look through, you know, obviously season 1 is full of old movies, but it is, it's pretty funny how quickly the movies are getting older and older by round. And I think that speaks to, you know, not just that we like old movies, but that the ones in this season are kind of unimpeachable classic old movies. Brad.

47 Yeah, absolutely. I like if not for Vertigo being against Star Wars and me enjoying chaos like sure Vertigo is in here. I almost the average age of these movies As I look through is the only two movies made in the 2000s are Quentin not even from like 1995 on. The only two movies are Quentin Tarantino films, and even then our our youngest movie is 19 years old. Like, these are some old films, Bob, and they're pretty much some of the greatest. Yeah, man. And you know, not to dive too quickly into this first match up here, but your boy's going to flip the coin again because we're talking about Star Wars versus West Side Story now.

37 I don't think we need to state our cases too much. I do have one question that I'm curious about, Brad. You know, we've, we've talked through auteur theory a little bit on the podcast and at least what we think it means. And you know, I look at a movie like West Side Story versus Star Wars, and I think it would be very easy to say if you're kind of an authorist, West Side Story is the clear winner here because it has such a clear kind of direction, visual theme, understanding of Miss Anson and all these things. Sure. I do think there's an arcturist, obviously an arcturist argument to make for Star Wars. Like it's George Lucas creating this world that he would come to spend his entire career on after the fact.

21 Yep. But I guess what I'm asking is if you put your sort of like analytical film guy hat on and you only could pick this match up based on that, do do you think that even for you, West Side Story would win that match up? Like as in like. Which one represents Otur theory more? Which one encapsulates like, yeah, cinema, whatever that means that that ephemeral term of cinema. Oh my gosh, think I would still. That's a tough one, man. I think I would still say Star Wars because it feels like such a singular vision like that. Like, yes, West Side Story is unique. I wouldn't say it's like completely separate from all of their musicals.

11 I can't think of many movies that capture the hero's story, the incredible miniature work that Lucas and his team did with a driving story and action like that. He combines all those things. Like, sure, you have 2001 a Space Odyssey. That's not an action movie, you know what I mean? It's not a popcorn movie. So I, I think that Lucas captures a lot of different elements in a very unique way. And for me, I think that's kind of the hallmark of auteur theory is that it's a director who can take all the different elements of filmmaking and create something unique to them. Like Wes Anderson is an auteur because he has all the same equipment everybody else is using, and yet he creates movies in such a way that you know it's him when he makes it. I think the same could be said true for Lucas in the films that he makes.

14 I'll be honest with you, Bob. I don't remember who directed West Side Story. So. It's 'cause you're a casual, 'cause you are not a ball knower, Brad, it's Robert Wise. Yeah, but there's another guy directing it, right? And he got like fired. Jerome Robbins, Yeah, he got booted. They said get out of here. You can't call it an author movie if two different people directed the film. Get out of here. And on that note, it is time to flip that coin. I do wish that West Side Stories extended cast of characters got their own movie The way that Star Wars extended cast of characters do. I would like to see Baby John and Grogu like that. I would. I would go watch that movie in a heartbeat. If Disney made it though.

59 Yeah, no, it wouldn't be any good. Flip the coin. All righty, we have another Tales victory, which means my boy, my boy, Georgie Luke is heading on dude. Why did you do this dude? This could have been Vertigo. I'm happy as a clam right now. You did. You knew you were going to do this. You came in this night knowing you were going to do this. I I feel it in my bones. I am. I am as happy as Walter Houston when he stares dead into the camera.

43 You you my friend, are Dumber than the dumbest Jackass. And that takes us to our next match up, the four seed Pulp Fiction up against the five seed rear window. This might be the I mean, it's not as hard for me 'cause I think Rear Window's perfect, but just in general, this might be the toughest match up of the entire bracket, Brad. I I would agree. With you 4 versus. Five Yeah, I, I would agree with you. I think Rear Window I, I here's the problem. I think both of them are perfect films in their own way. I think I, I think I lean towards Pulp Fiction because of Samuel's speech at the end of the movie.

27 Like there's some, oh dude, there's something about the end of a movie that has a good resonant ending and the idea of a man who has come face to face with God and just wants to be better. He's just trying Bob. That just that hit me. Dude, I've seen that scene. I was obsessed with this movie when I was in high school. Dude obsessed with this movie and I have watched this scene so many times that I can play it in my mind like a DVD now. And the moment when he he shifts his weight and he kind of squints his eyes like he's focusing extra hard on on Ringo when he says the truth is and he leans in and points the gun at him and says you're the weak. It's just it's the best line reading of all time. Brad.

22 It's it's so good. He should have won an Oscar. Yeah, it's AB. It's stunningly good. It is Samuel L Jackson at his absolute peak. And I like, I love Rear Window Man. I would watch it 9 times out of 10 if you put it up against ten other movies. I think I'm taking Pulp Fiction on this one. I don't mind that dude and like I I think I am going to take Rear Window here. Not just because I want to force a coin flip, but because these movies are so close in my mind that on any given day, I think I would pick either one of them. And so a coin flip is kind of the only way for me to to hash this out. I'm happy with whichever one wins. Pulp Fiction will be heads in this scenario, and Rear Window will be tails. So Brad for a spot.

10 Oh, you look like you're gonna make a joke about the rear. What I'll I'll give you, I'll give you an option. I'm gonna give you an out. Robert, Are you ready? You're going to. Let me have rear window as long as I agree to a coin flip against Star Wars and no. I will let you have both of them if one of them replaces Casablanca on the other side of the bracket. Oh interesting. Well, I guess that depends on how hard are you going to ride for 12 Angry Men or Inglorious Basterds. That's that's a that is a something that I know and you don't. Yeah, I don't care. We're going to flip this coin, dude. This is, we have to do this the way nature and God intended us to do it, and that is via chaos.

54 So Pulp Fiction, Heads, Rear Window Tails, Brad, Flip that coin. Dude, see this? I told you, man, we got a few tails in here. Look at that, that that coin got pissed. Off at you for criticizing it publicly so much. It did. Rear Window is into the Final Four, so I think surprisingly to both of us, Brad, our our two entrants on this side of the bracket, Star Wars in Rear Window, I don't think either of us had that in our bracket. No what? What did you have for the bottom bracket? I I don't have my bracket pulled up, I either had Vertigo or West Side Story coming out of the top and I had Rear window coming out of the bottom here.

44 Oh OK, alright, yeah, no, I had Vertigo and Pulp Fiction, so my western half of the bracket. Shot dude is. Done for. Well, why don't you take us over to the right side of the bracket here Brad, as we look at our first match up in the top right quadrant. Yeah, We are looking at the number two overall seed 12 angry men versus Inglourious Basterds. Now I will I will say if we're continuing on with our theme of who could fight 12 angry men, I think the Bear Jew would have a good chance. You give him that baseball bat. Yeah, that that doesn't seem like it'd actually be very hard at all, Brad.

26 But but here's the thing, Henry Fonda gets the knife that he stabs into the. Table switchblade. That's it. That's true, man. We're just creating better sequels for both of these movies. All right, look, I I picked the great escape in the last round against this. I like Inglorious Basterds a lot. I think the great escape very narrowly edged it out for me. I don't think it holds a candle to 12 angry men 12 angry men's another perfect movie. And so for me, this is like this is a no brainer. I I moved 12 angry men on pretty easily. Man, I so I gave 12 Angry Men and Inglourious Basterds a 10 out of 10.

08 I like I love both of these. Movies for Inglorious? I didn't know that. And I gave I in my vibe rankings, I put 12 Angry men at 4:00 and I put Inglourious Basterds AT5I. I love both of these movies, Bob I I think they both I will say, unlike last round and talking about great escape, 12 angry men is consistently A9 or 9 1/2. Like the lowest point of that movie might be a nine out of 10. And it's probably when the judge is like, telling them to go back into the room, and then they're in the room and it's at least a 9 1/2 out of 10. The rest of the movie, like, right. Like, it is a perfect movie through and through. Inglourious Basterds has some slow moments. We talked about it.

57 It dips a little bit. It dips a little bit and it's whenever the Inglourious Basterds are like doing things. On the screen, yeah. Yeah, anytime anybody else is on the screen, it's great. Now, the one exception to that is the bar scene. But even that, it's like, not all the bastards, it's just a few of them. And who's the actress? Kruger. Diane Kruger. Diane Kruger. Yeah, yeah, it's like them and her and the German guy and it's great. Anyways, I, I want to see, I'm going to once again, Bob, I'm going to go against what I picked and I'm going to choose 12 Angry Men to move on.

41 Yeah, you are. I I just, oh, I know I can't. I can't put in glorious over it. At the other listen, at the end of the day, you're being consistent because Star Wars was your number 2, Vertigo was your three and you picked Star Wars. That's true. Angry Men was your four and Glorious is your 5. Like, that's just, that's how the ranking shook out my friend. Dude, I, I mean, I've screwed myself out of two of my four final four. I might just have to do the same thing once we get down to our bottom right bracket, which is the number three seed Casablanca versus the number 11 seed Singing in the Rain.

21 This, I can't, I can't do that. Bob Casablanca's moving on. I love Casablanca. It's an incredible film. If some Like It Hot was here, I might want to play a little chaos and choose it. But Singing in the Rain is a garbage movie for garbage people, so. I have a couple confessions to make. Brad, this is our confession. I'm, I'm 3. Is it a, is it a Dashboard Confessional? Yeah, it's a Dashboard Confessional. It sure is. Now I've watched Casablanca 2 times in the last year. My perhaps my favorite movie of all time after having not watched it in about 5 years.

02 And there is a section in the middle and I can, I can pinpoint the exact moment. It's when it's it's the daytime after. The eventful first night and he runs into Ilsa out in the bazaar when she's looking at things. And then they go visit Sydney Green Street at the Blue Parrot and talk to him for a while. And I thought to myself, this is boring. This section of this movie is boring. And I've never felt this way before. And I stuffed that down because I said, you can't say that about Casablanca. It's your favorite movie. You're not allowed to. Then I watched it a second time and I was like, Oh my God, is Casablanca closer to a nine and a half than a 10 for you now, Bob? And I stuffed that down within me. And then when I did my bracket, I had this match up and I remembered my son, who was three years old at the time, wanting to watch Singing in the Rain because he loved the dancing and he wanted to watch the Singing in the Rain number. He wanted to watch, Moses supposes, and he wanted to watch Make Him Laugh.

06 And when he watched Donald O'Connor doing Make Him Laugh, I was like, this is what movies are about, dude. I'm watching my kid fall in love with one of my favorite movies, not because of something I did, but because it just freaking works, man. And hopefully someday he'll fall in love with Casablanca the way I did. But at this moment of my life, Brad, if I had to pick one movie to save from the fiery furnace for my children's sake, I think it's singing in the rain, Brad. I I like that you've placed this now that I am the destroyer of your children's no.

46 I'm just telling you, like, for me to to willingly let Casablanca go into the fiery furnace there, there had to be some monumental shift. And I think what I'm telling you is I'm experiencing that now in fatherhood. Yeah. And I think singing in the rain at this moment is more near and dear to my heart, even though if I'm making a list of like, best movies ever, it's behind Casablanca. Yeah. I don't know, it's like it's like second hand Lions for You is behind a lot of movies on the best movies ever list, but like it's going to be in your final four movies. Second Hand Lions, a movie that was quoted of Robert Duvall's movies. That is the movie they chose.

28 The quote from Bob that's going to come up every time Second Hand Lions comes up on this podcast from here on out. If this. Ends very anticlimactically here with an easy Casablanca coin flip victory. Like that's fine. I just had to say I I should have known when I offered you to get rid of Casablanca and keep Rear Window OR Pulp Fiction and you didn't even say anything. You're like, yeah, maybe I could do that. I should have known you. You're traitor. You don't. You don't. Actually, I would still pick Singing in the Rain over both those movies 'cause if Casablanca's my favorite movie and those other two aren't, and I'm still picking Singing in the Rain here, what does that tell you, man?

08 I I love my children that I'm gonna I'm think I'm gonna call Wellness check on you, but let's let's get this coin for. My children. All right. Casablanca is heads. Singing in the rain is tails. Brad, flip that coin. Robert Casablanca will be moving on. We have finally. Casablanca moves on. As I said, it ended anti climactically, but it did not go down without a fight. So thank you to Singing in the Rain. But we have our final four films, Brad, 1977's Star Wars, the most recent film, our final 41954's Rear Window, 1957's 12 Angry Men and 1942's Casablanca. Looking at this list of four, I very easily can identify my championship match up.

10 Brad does. Do you have one in mind? Does one stick out to you pretty quickly here too? Oh man, I I would say it feels pretty obvious to me who the winner's who the winner's gonna be.
