They're all the same, they're all names. But but I have to say I don't usually comment on the trailers play at the start of the show, but wow, yeah, the Ice Storm. I would say that trailer gets the movie about sixty percent. I'd say I think that's a little harsh because they do do the thing where they exapose the perfection of the family with some weird stuff coming up, like the Nixon stuff, the sex stuff, the Key party stuff. But this is a very sad, very still for many reasons, not just the the the outwardly tragic moments at the end. This is a movie about lives imploding and selfishness, and it's it's a heavy watch.

5:07 And they make it sound so heartworm. Oh yeah, no, it looks like it looks like the next feel good movie, and it's it's not. No, not not even a little bit. It's feel good. It's an excellent movie. And don't get me wrong. I mean, I guess the only way if I had to market it, the only way I would think to market it fairly would be to kind of have its start kind of devious, kind of have like, you know, more of a drama tone. You know, my wife and I aren't talking so much and stuff like that. But the ending where it's like and they discover something that changes everything or whatever, how are they put. It in the scene that they choose. And they show a clip from like a literal tragedy at the end of the film which does change them.

5:54 It's just that that's a bit, I would say, a bit on the extreme side. But wow, yeah, so oh well that's what the episode's about. So I fucking hope, So yeah, tonight's film is the nineteen ninety seven drama and not comedy, The Ice Storm. Not I mean no, not even a drama y, not even not even a little bit. And it is quite quite the film, quite the experience. For those who have not seen this, I highly recommend it. It's currently streaming on Max correct and that's where I would recommend you check it out. But who uh uh, it's rare that I mean, this isn't as bad as some of we've seen some trailers where we were our jaws were on the ground at how horribly well not even miss marketed, like you know, they mismarketed the first take in movie. Yeah, but they didn't try to make you think it was about a daughter and a father who go on a camping trip. You know, like like wow, because what was that movie? Was your friend and neighbors or our friends, our friends and neighbors, your friends, neighbors, your friends and neighborsigbor One of the saddest films I've ever seen, very good, one of the saddest films I've ever seen. The trailer literally makes it look like a laugh out loud comedy and that movie is like soul crushing lye soul crushingly bleak. It is so sad, so brutally sad. So with that all being said, yes,

7:27 now that Halloween is no longer upon us, we are spending this month November, celebrating America's premiere holiday. Yes, other than the fourth of July, I suppose I would say, which is Thanksgiving For those who don't know. I don't know how you wouldn't. Thanksgiving is a time when you what you're checking what time it was, more so turning my watch on this freaking guy. There we go. Thanksgiving is a time when you show thanks, spend time with your family, and traditionally you eat turkey A little Dave would rather a ham, I guess. I so there there has only been one turkey, like one significant piece of turkey that has like won me over completely. And it was a clope of all places at your work, yes, at my work, and it was it was a it was the Thanksgiving carry and I think they had last year in the cafeteria for us, and it was some of the best turkey, if not the best turkey I've ever had in my life, to where it was just like wow, this is like really good.

8:26 And I usually don't go for turkey much unless I cover it in gravy. So your family's bad at making turkey. No, my family's gonna make it turkey. I just I've never been a big turkey person. Okay, so what made this turkey good? It just had flavor too, So maybe I don't know. I'm not trying. I'm not trying to throw your family under the bus, but it really sounds like. I'm not gonna say anything else regards to my family's cooking. But usually turkey doesn't have a lot of flavor for me, not specifically, just with my family. Well, I'm not gonna deny that turkey is a somewhat well, especially the white meat. So that's kind of my point. The dark meat has an immense amount of flavor comparatively, but a good turkey is great.

9:06 Yeah. And I've only cooked turkey once and I did fine. But I got a half cooked turkey. I got one of those that you cook at the rest of the way for two and a half hours and then it's ready. Yeah, and that thing was stupid good. But I've always said that my favorite thing about Thanksgiving is I get to eat just enough turkey to be done eating turkey potentially for the rest of the year, although I like a Christmas time turkey all right. My favorite is the stuffing. Stuffing is my absolute favorite for Thanksgiving. Just like stovetop or do you have a specific kind office. The break crum stuffing is not bad my mom. My mom has made the same stuffing for like ever since I was young to now that I always look forward, like I get my own pan of it every year.

Because another interesting factoid is do You Even Movie launched on Thanksgiving Week where we talked about our first film, which was Planes, Trains and Automobiles that is correct, which is not only the quintessential Thanksgiving joy ride of films, but also just one of my top five movies of all time. But at the same time, like I generally do not look forward, not look forward to the wrong one. Wow, I'm not as enthusiastic as I am about a Christmas Ham.

It was actually technically a New Year's Ham. But long story short, I went to a I went to a graduation party for my good friend who is actually my roommate now when he was in high school, and the party was close to something in regards to I believe New Year's. I believe it was New Year's because there was a ham there leftover ham that had not gotten eaten.

We had a lot of fun and everything, and it got to the point in the night that I was that I was getting the munchies, and so I had also drank basically about half a bottle of Jack Daniels through the day at this point. Jesus Christ, it was bad. It was bad. Anyway. I mixed it, like I didn't just drink it straight like I had, mixed drinks like I had. Well, saying it's mixed doesn't help when you said you drink half a bottle of it though, Yeah, So that that kind of negates the like, well I want wasn't just drink Yeah, but you told us how much you ended up drinking? Was this this was years ago? This is years ago. It's fine, This was like Thursday, shut up. But no, So anyway, he maybe it was it was a birthday.

So anyway, he had like gotten to the point of the evening like he'd opened up some of his gifts he gotten and this ham was sitting there and I was like, I'm gonna have some ham. Long story short, in a matter of two hours, I believe I ate between like fifteen to twenty slices of ham on top of drinking that Jack Daniels. So the next morning that I woke. Up, You're lucky you woke up, I was. Extremely hot for woman and sweating. And then that's when I also realized that the sweat had the smell of the ham in it. I legitimately had meat sweats for the first time and only time ever in my life so far. I just imagined Jesse from Nightmare Elm Street two waking up in his bed that first scene, but it's you with like with like like a Christmas sweater. I woke up.

14:26 I woke up the next morning to see not only like, not only have that feeling going on, but the first thing I saw on the dining room table was my empty bottle of Jack Daniels. And that's when I knew I'd made a mistake. So you you learned something. Oh, we still laugh about it to this day, Like Laurie and I will literally talk about the night that I ate like between like twenty to thirty slices of ham. Yes, I know it increased what I told the story Now but it's because I'm embarrassed to actually say what I believe the number was. It's like Paul Bunyan in his big blue offs, except it's a drunk guy eating ham and trunk. Yeah, it's the same fucking thing, man, same goddamn thing. So yeah, that was. That was the one and only time so far I've ever had meats once that I absolutely deserved it.

But I think it's also fair to say that you and I have Thanksgiving tradition with our friends of like Thanksgiving night, people come over here, we bring leftovers, We watch plane trains, we watch Dutch like we have. We have a culmination of our friends to hang out with on Thanksgivings as well as the family.

I mean, it is about friends getting it together when it's cold outside. That is true, and about really spending time together and learning who we really are. We can, but I suppose we should make it relatively quick. Yeah's why I figured we. I mean, there's not much to say about it. It's it's good. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, home for the holidays. That's another really great one. Yeah. So we had a few that we we had as like standbys. Yeah, but we would always be remissed about how like, man, they aren't a lot, they just aren't a lot. Yeah, And then in twenty twenty, we just found this list, a bunch that had a crazy amount of them. Yeah, and of that crazy amount, several of them were really good, really good, and we went into almost all of them with no clue. And Ice Storm was one of those. Yes, it was that we just put it on and as it started, we were like, oh, this is some high fallutin stuff, and so I just wanted to I just wanted to preface by saying that this was in our hunt yeah for Thanksgiving fodder. Oh yeah it was.

Oh god, the House of Yes. So but yeah, it was one of our marathons. I think this was one we kicked off with, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe, I mean we we did these crazy like nine movie pre Thanksgiving days, so who knows when it was. Who knows. I mean I literally had taken off work. I mean I did it for a while and everything. But yeah, this was one that we just put it on and simply we're just amazed by how good it was.

Yeah, and well, you know, just the overall developing of the characters, the story, and honestly, it also happens in like I believe, like seventy two hours in a sense, I. Think it's forty eight forty eight Okay, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, it's like the day it starts in the night or the day before Thanksgiving and just kind of goes to Yeah, so maybe seventy two hours. Yeah. So and also we like that it happened one night, and I mean this isn't necessarily that but short time period. Yeah, I find that they create urgency. Yeah, absolutely so. I mean this was one that we loved when it was when it was over, and I mean I think we have not missed a single year of it since twenty twenty. We might have skipped it one year because we have a lot of them that we go through. I think this is one we kept in the rotation, though, I think. It wouldn't shock me because while it's a sadder one, it's not The War at Home, No, which I love that movie immensely. I think The War at Home is one of the finest feature films ever made. Absolutely, but uh, I mean, it is not a fun ride through Thanksgiving.

Because that's one thing that I did find out in doing research on the book. Apparently the book had a bunch of nods to seventy songs because it takes place in seventy three. Yeah, it makes music and everything. But we see the ice over surroundings, and we also meet Paul Hood, who is played by Toby maguire. He's sitting on a train in the dark, reading a comic book as best he can. The train comes back to life and we hear the guy come out and say the next stop is New Canaan, Connecticut.

So we joined Paul at his school in English class, and he is crushing on Libbits, who is played by a very young and film debut o Katie Holmes. Yes, and uh. So that's when he's walking with another one of his friends and he confesses that he's in love with her. And that's when the friend mentions that her parents usually go to Switzerland during the Thanksgiving holiday and they leave her at home and that's exactly what they're doing this year.

36:53 Well, she's kind of a loser, yeah, you know, I mean, they sent her away to boarding school. So he's also concerned though, because his mate Francis will probably pursue her. And she's like, well, you know, you haven't told him yet, and he is quiet, meaning that he absolutely. Has Yeah, and apparently he's went after every girl that he's ever been interested in. Yeah, And that's when we cut to him and his roommates in the room. His roommate is played by David Cromholtz, who many will know as Bernard from the Santa Claus and they are smoking a bong and listening to Dirty Love by Frank Zappa. They sure are what a bunch of edge lords. And they're also comparing sexual conquest and Francis basically says that, you know, he's got no competition to Paul, and that's why he's jealous.

He goes out to the hallway where the payphone is, and that's when we meet Ben Hood, who is played by Kevin Klein, who's you know, inviting him back for Thanksgiving, and he's like, you know, your your mom and I are excited to wait on your hand and foot while you make anger groans and watch TV joking with him being a family man kind of thing. Yeah, he's just kind of joking about, like we're looking forward to having you here so you can ignore us and grunt for more food. So Wendy, his sister's played by Christina Ritchie, is asked to say hi. She gets on the phone and she's watching the water Gate scandal unfold. Yeah, and she's really into it. Yeah yeah, yeah, annoying. She wants to kill Nixon basically, no. Not basically, she says someone should shoot him. And that's when Kevin Clein's like, can we cut it with the political assassination talk?

So we also meet Elena Wood, who is played by Joe Allen, and Ben and Elena leave Wendy at home because they're going to go over to their neighbor, the Carver's house, and they're having a little dinner party. So Ben and Elena's neighbors, which are played by Sigourney Weaver as well as Jamie Sheridan, and that's when we see also Mikey and Sandy, who is played by Elijah Wood and what is it's Ben Adam hand Bird who many will know Adam han Bird as young Robin Williams in Jumunji. Oh yeah, Alan Parrish, I remember the name. Yeah, sorry, they've got really excited. Now I'm scared. Guys and the kids are helping out with dinner. But we also see that Mikey is sneaking drinks when they when they take.

He like downs a wineglass and then Elijah Wood's character does and then like downs like an unfinished high ball right after Good for him. And we also hear discussion of the idea of a key party yes, which may come play later in the film. Who knows may come play may come to play later in the I don't even know. It's okay, Davy. So Elena and. Ben return home to find Wendy on the phone. She's trying to hide that she's talking to somebody, and I love it because Kevin Klein goes to the door and just yanks the cord back. That's pretty damn funny. Ben tells her to get to bed.

39:39 He goes in and kisses her good night, and that's when he goes into the room and tries to make a move with Lana, but she just kind of rolls over and they decide to go to sleep. Yay, I mean everybody likes to go to sleep. So the next day, Alanna goes to a book sale that is at a church, but this isn't an interesting book sale because there's a bunch of sexual revolution books on the table, a bunch of feminism books, and she's kind of she's kind of aloof by it. It looks like a little bit. She's taken aback. Yeah, not sure how she feels. And we also meet Philip Edwards pastor Philip Edwards, and they start striking up a conversation. At school, Wendy is watching boys play football on recess and enjoying us smoke with her friends too. Yeah yeah, real chill, real chill. Well, and that's when we start to realize that there's a lot more going on. Yeah, absolutely, Which is kind of the point of this film is that they seem like an apologies for the sucking lozenge.

But the whole point is that they seem they're all very affluent people. They seem to have a decent family dynamic. Well, we also get more of a sense that Mikey may have some issues with him because he's tossed a football, it goes over his head. He's still looking for it and it lands right beside him, and the friends rag on him a bit too.

41:11 Yeah, he's going places, not college, but places. So Wendy ends up leaving and riding her bike. She actually rides past Elena and Philip that are still talking out front of the church. And that's when she goes to a pharmacy and she steals a devil dog mmm, devil dogs, and a woman does catch her but really does nothing. Well yeah, you know, I mean, it's like stealing bread to feed your family in the Bible, right, So devil dogs Drake's devil dogs delicious. She also runs into Sandy, who tells her Mikey is looking for her and the two meet up in an abandoned swimming pool and they practice kissing. And I really like this scene because it's not romantic innocence. It's literally two kids that are curious. And then also we have that beautiful crane shot that lifts above them as they kiss.

Yeah, but it also kind of warns you ahead that this is gonna be one of those movies kind of uncomfortable coming of age type deals, which there were a lot of those in the nineties. Jane tells him you better get out of here, and we see him leave as he's walking back through the woods to his house. So that's when we also established that they necessarily don't have to drive over they can they're in walking. Yeah, our friends and neighbors. So Elena's back home making dinner when Wendy returns, and that's when Elena kind of has a moment with her in comments on how she looks so free riding her bike and like how freeing it was for her as a girl. And that's when Elene or Wendy's like, mom, are you feeling okay? Like is things okay?

43:33 Yeah? She starts reminiscing, and a very aggressive is what I'll say a way she's she's like reminiscing hard, hard. So Wendy requests money for a band uniform and her mother is unaware that she's still in band, and she's like, you know, I didn't know you still play, and she's like, well, after dinner, would you play some And that's when we see that she's playing the trombone in front of her parents and not doing great. Not not no, no, Well, I mean, for the record, I mean, how often do you listen somebody played the trumpa trombone by themselves. I mean, she's in high school. You're actually kind of a dick saying that she's Bad's the high school. Kevin Klein's making a drink. What he's making a drink as I don't know, oh.

So over at the Carver residence, Sandy requests help with this homework from Mikey, and we also find out that Jim, their father, returns home telling them he's back, and neither boys knew he was gone.

Yeah they're still awful too. Yeah, Well, I remember you and I had a long conversation about that after licorice pizza. Oh yeah, yeah, not after eating licorice pizza, after the film, after watching attempting to watch the film, I like to say attempting because there's much of a story to tell.

I was staying in a boarding house and the guy when I was setting up the whole thing was like, it was like, I have a bed, and I was like, I don't want it. He was reading aloud something to the class basically about how when you smell something, you're basically eating eating because it's particles that came off of the thing going into your body. And if that isn't germophobic and creepy enough, then he says, so next time you go into the bathroom after somebody. Yeah, and everybody's just a comfortable And all I could think was like, ah, he's got jarzy urine in his closet.

So we also see Elena takes the bike out of the garage at the house and she starts riding it through town, and she stops off the local pharmacy as well, admiring a tube of lipstick that she pockets along with three others, unaware that she is right in the mirror where they can see. Which is hilarious because she's not being sneaky, she's just filling her pockets. And she's getting greedy too. She got the one in there and then gets like three or four more. Yeah, but yeah, like it's it's so obvious what she's doing.

I go up to the front because it's a slow time, and I start folding T shirts and these kids come up like it was like vampires, like they couldn't cross the barrier and this excuse me. And I'm like yeah, and they're like how long is this going to take? And I was like, I don't know, as long as it takes for the police to get here. And they're like police and I was like, yeah, he stole something. That's that's crime. So he's going to be arrested. And they were like, oh man, I mean he's our ride. And I was like, I mean, good luck. I mean, you know, make better friends. I don't know, but I that was one of the funniest Oh my gosh, because what we would do is if we saw I mean I was an associate, so if we saw somebody take something or we thought they were trying to Because you got to remember, we had a

So, and there were kids that would steal stuff and they knew so like when we excuse me to talk to you, they would just walk right out, knowing that we can't chase half of them, but we would be calling security and giving a description of them and everything.

So we see Jane pull up to her home as a loud boom goes off, and that's when she goes in the backyard because we see that Sandy is just hitting his toys of fireworks firecrackers and blown them up. Not just I mean toys. He blows up a stereo without like a transistor radio. He puts a firecracker in a model airplane and explodes halfway across. So it's he's doing a very destructive thing.

54:30 Yeah, and she obviously scolds him, and that's when he's like, you know, are you going to tell dad? And she's like, what would it matter? So we are getting a very good sense that this is not working out with the family dynamics on these sides. Yeah. Well, and by her saying that, it's becoming apparent that when they had said like you were gone, they weren't being cute and funny. I mean they actually don't really think much of him, and they don't really respect him or anything, and that's probably because they follow the example of their mother. Yeah. So she hands over a to him, saying that he can play with this if she takes away his firecrackers. And she goes down the basement to find Mikey and Wendy watching TV, and she scolds him for not doing anything about Sandy. And she also questions, you know where where you guys won't have homework to do, and they remind her it's Thanksgiving break in Unison. Yeah, So Wendy excuses herself to go to the bathroom and she runs into Sandy. One thing leads to another, and he blocks the door if she's going to the bathroom, and she's like, you know, I'll show you yours or I'll show you mind if you show me yours.

And again that's when we realize we're going into that territory of the kind of uncomfortable coming of age nineties movie. Yeah, because they go into the bathroom, but the scene plays out in a very odd way. It does the wait, you're not expecting Yeah, because she, you know, uns ups her pants and then when he goes to uns up his pants, he struggled. He's no, he is shaking. Yeah, he's terrified. And then he just starts screaming, get out of here, leave me alone, get. Out of here. Line, what do you want? So the mom comes in takes her out, but then doesn't scold her because she is a woman. Yeah, and so she basically just says like along the lines of like, your body is a temple, and I'm sure your parents tell you this stuff all the time, but you just need to like think about think about it, about who you do these things with. Yeah, and don't just do them whenever or whatever, which is somewhat rich coming from her, but.

So Elena returns home from her shoplifting incident, as Ben requests helped because he's trying to pull the turkey out of the fridge so they can defrost it for Thanksgiving because Thanksgiving is tomorrow. The turkey falls out, and he can also see that she's like a little distraught but also a little illuminated. And that's when one thing leads to another and they end up having sex. Yeah, so she got the thrill of stealing. Wendy returns home as Ben tells her that he's going to pick up Paul at the station, and Wendy goes upstairs and here's the shower running in the bedroom. So Ben and Paul to stuff into the car at the station.

Yeah. So that's when he also comments that, you know, Dad, I'm sixteen, and he goes, oh, well, it's all the more reason to discuss it. So they arrive at the house and then that's when he goes up, by the way, Paul, can you forget that we ever had this conversation?

And they have a really cute relationship, like they are friendly with each other. And he's like, this is kind of a one on one rendezvous, so he's basically making plans with libts. And also as they're doing this, a Jim Crotchey record is playing and it starts skipping and that's when he's like, you've been messed with by shit, haven't you. And it's not anything like interrogating, they laugh.

As the Hood family sets the table, they sit down, Ben comments on how nice it is to have family together and even ask Wendy to say grace because she used to love to as a little girl and she seems. To love it even more now as a young woman. She begins traditionally thanking God and then goes to thank them for their material possessions and pointing out stuff that how they get the stuff themselves until they're full, and how they're still starving kids in India. Well, thanks God for them slaughtering the Native Americans, you know, So there he go. So Ben's not amused. And the next day Ben and Janey are at at her home as Ben confesses that Elena may suspect something and Janney is like, well, you know, it's your wife, you know, what do you think? And that's when we also see Jane's uncomfortable and she tells him that she's got to run an errand she'll be right back to get birth control. Except she goes up the front door and we hear her car start up.

Leaves, yeah, exactly. So that's when we kind of just see Ben chilling around the house. He's smoking in the guest room, he's drinking more of the vodka, practicing his golf swing in the dining room, rolling on the waterbed, and even scoping out the medications. In the bathroom, Yeah, because why not. Wendy and Mike arrive at the house thinking no one is there, and Mikey suggests they can watch TV or they can fool around, but only if she wants to, asking you know, why why'd you go after Sandy. Wendy ignores him because she finds a Nixon Halloween mask on the ground.

And naturally Ben comes down the steps and he's like, what the. Hell are you kids doing? And I love it because that's when Mikey goes to the chair and like puts a TV guide over over. His lap and just starts saying a battle battle for the the center of the Earth or something. Yeah, so he scolds him, and that's when Mike tries to talk about me. He's like, you know, don't talk to me, like and that's when also he asks for orders Wendy to take off the Nixon mask and basically says like, I have no time for your shit, like no time for your thing. He knows that she's going to eventually have sex. Yeah, So his his go to is he's like, I'm not even angry, it's just maybe you could do better than than him. Yeah, you know, it is basically what he says, although I do think that's partially a cop out to just saying like please stop doing that at all, to say like you're better than him, or maybe he really they everybody just hates those kids.

So back at the back at their house, Ben tells Elena about finding Wendy with Mikey at the carvers, but then Elene asked why was he there, and that's when he makes up some bullshit lie about returning a mustache coffee mug and a Lena sees right through it. Well, he says coffee, but she's the one that says the woman the mustache on. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was returning at coffee monk reading you didn't see it? Yeah, well you were reading. I didn't want to bother you.

It's some of the best lying I've ever seen in the movie. You do know that the actors are lying the whole time. What because he's not actually the guy who was the Heartbreak Kill. He's the Heartbreak Kid. No, he's Ben Still No, No, he's Jerry Stiller's son. But no Heartbreak Kid a good movie I recommend. So that's when we see the three of them sitting at dinner as Paul tells them by because he's gonna go meet Libts in New York and he's gonna take the train.

And that's something that I think is really interesting about Kevin Klein's relationship with Scourney Weaver in this Yeah, is they've it's kind of they've kind of flipped the rolls a bit because traditionally when you think of men having an affair, you think of it being strictly physical to the man but potentially very emotional to the woman. You always, you know, always say a thing like, oh, he says he's gonna leave his wife or whatever with mistresses. But it's very much clear that Kevin Klein's biggest problem is that he lacks intimacy with his wife and he has trouble communicating because all he wants to do when he's with Scorny Weaver more than even full around, is talk.

The worst part and the rain starts to fall. Yeah it does, but it's not frozen. Yeah, not yet. So that is when they go over to the party and they arrive finding out that it is a key party at Dot's house. Dot played by the Great House and Jenny.

I think it came from even earlier, might probably sixties. Yeah, Basically, a key party is where a couple arrives at the party, one of them drops the keys into the bowl. At the end of the night, the women will fish the keys out of the bull, and whoever's keys they land with, that's who they go home with. Yep, So it's it's really just a wife swapping party. Yeah, that is exactly what it is. So that's when Alison Janney is Nott requests the keys for the bull, and you can see that the two of them are immediately uncomfortable and did not know, and they lie and say they forgot something in the car. Ben comments he didn't know as they get back into the car and that if he knew, they could have figured out a lie.

Yeah, and that's when he tells her like there's no big plot and he and he doesn't feel good about the affair, and Alna comments that she's glad to finally hear confession, before yanking the keys out of the and storming angrily back into the house. She throws the keys to Dot, who just drops them right into the fishbowl. Yep, so now we might have some revenge swinging.

Which is really fascinating because she goes at him with like this, you're being macho, and although he is being a bit mucho, but she kind of goes out of with this whole like you're subjugating me, like I'm not your toy, when in reality he's clearly having like a full blown affair with her, which is one side. She's not having a full blown affair with him. Yeah, he's having a full blown affair with her. I find that really interesting how she turns out like I'm not your toy, yea, But to play it up like, well, I have other things to worry about in life, so I got distracted.

But I love this scene because even though she's mad, and even though she's kind of threatening her husband with vengeance adultery, when he starts talking to her, she's like, I'm surprised to see you here. He says something so totally fucked. He says, well, did you ever I didn't write He says something along lines of a shepherd sometimes he's the company of his sheep.

Yeah, So for him to be there, it's like, how are these people supposed to take seriously your counsel when you're cruising to maybe bang somebody's wife. Yeah, no kidding, it's a little fucked bit fucked.

1:14:00 So back at Libbitt's apartment, Paul using the bathroom finds some what we assume is valuum. Yeah. Well he names three drugs. Yeah, and the one he names that I recognize is Valuume. Valuum would be the kind of thing people would want to take to have fun. Yeah, I guess. I mean I took it to get jaw surgery, and I could I fell asleep during the surgery. I am a lightweight. This is true, but he is not getting it for himself. His intention is to put Francis to sleep so he can have some time. With libbits well, to conk him out, to conk him out, to put him to sleep. So he goes to him offering the meds like he's like, hey man, look what I found. And that's what Libbitts comes in and she's like, oh, can I have some two? And he tries to not and that's when Francis is like, oh no, don't give her one. So she takes two. Yeah, so he takes one, she takes two, and I don't think he takes any it actually, well no, he Franton takes one, a Libbts takes two, and then then Paul taken too. Maybe he did take two. Yeah, So he goes to him offering the meds they take. And that's when we also see that Ben back at the party is cutting loose and having some drinks.

So back at the Carver residence, Mikey puts on a slicker against the advice of Sandy and heads out into the ice storm. Very cool shot as Mikey leaves, because the ice is already falling at this point, the door's iced over. He's in a bright red slicker and the slicker just fades out from the ice well. And he says that and this is important. Yeah, he says, the reason he wants to go out is with it being so cold and raining that there's no particles in the air. No, so you you it's it's a clean air, healthy air to breathe. Yeah. But also he seems to be a kind of kid who likes to wander on his own anyway, and as a person who likes to to wander around in really bad snowstorms and stuff on foot.

And his response is, oh, well, you want to take a bath together, and she's just kind of like what And then my brother and sister he's like yeah, and he's making his face like let's please like actually take a bath together. You are drugged and uh and as she's uh moving over, adjusting her body slightly, uh yep, passes out out head right into his cross, right into his crotch, and that's when we see Paul kind of contemplate, and we cut back to uh, we cut back to Paul or no, sorry, we cut back into Wendy, who is also now out in the ice storm, and she ventures over to the Carver's residence find Sandy at home, and that's when at the key party, Dot gathers everyone because it's time for the keys to be drawn.

So outside, Mikey plays on the diving board of the banded pool they were in earlier, and he's just doing what kids do, standing on the edge of it and jumping up, sliding on the iceed over diving board. And basically this is the beginning of us really getting the sense something bad is going to happen to him. And this is a fake out. Yes, he doesn't slip and fall and break his neck or anything, so but yeah, we're starting to get this sense that he's all alone. The storm is really bad. Yeah, but also like there are no parents, no you know, nowhere, Like the kid who's on the diving board is supposed to be responsible for his younger brother. Yeah, and Christina Ricci's character is supposed to be or it's just home alone.

1:18:11 Home alone, and it's all the parents are literally at this key party. Yeah, yeah, hoping to get a little strange. So I wasn't even a joke though, I know, yeah, I know. So the only time in my life I had the room spin was I was I was severely dehydrated once. Okay, that makes sense, and uh, but I never had the room spin. And I heard people describe it, and I remember the crazy thing, and everybody's like dooh, because everybody drinks alcohol but me basically, but it was the room was spinning and I would close my eyes trying to, like, you know, stop it. And I noticed that I felt like my eyes was always so I put my hand over my eye and realized that literally my eyes were twirling around uncontrollably. And I had no That blew my mind though, that I could put my hand on my eye and my eye was doing something I didn't want it to do.

So back at limits his apartment, Paul moves his moves her head from his lap, and he tries to pick her up. He stumbles, drops her to the ground a little bit, and that's when he also looks at his watch and decides that he's gonna try to leave early and catch the train.

So that's when Ben tries to intervene, but he drunkenly falls into the table. Some of his buddies catch him, and Lena sees this, Jim sees this, and Ben has helped to the bathroom. Paul barely catches the train in New York and begins to read his comic book. Elena and Jim find themselves alone in the living room because everybody's picked their keys at this point, and He's like you know, I'm pretty sure that's my keys in the bowl there. So she retrieves them, and that's when he's like, they're both looking uneasy, and that's when he basically says, you know, I don't think so this night's been pretty discouraging.

He's like, Elena, we're neighbors, close friends, doesn't it make it seem a little strange, And she's like, well, you know, we can just stay here, keep each other company. Yeah yeah, this is this is solid decision making. So that is when we see them leave outside of the house, and right as they leave, we also see that a branch has fallen down, covered in ice. Oh and we also did mention the thing you and I mentioned as they walked into the bar. Yeah, well, when they were coming, I mean I think it's pretty obvious. Yeah there. Yeah, but there was this moment where she has an umbrella, and you just won't share it with her, the husband and wife. Yeah, but yeah, So they go to the car. I did love the branch falling because ice storms make heavier because you know, they're covered in water that freezes, So I like that touch.

1:23:04 And then they get in the car and this is possibly one of the saddest, most awkward, most saddest. He turns the car on to warm it up, and that's when she's like, you know, do the seats go back. He pushes the seats back. They go at it for what a minute? Maybe that's you're so generous. Thirty seconds, so nice of you, such a nice young boy. Twenty seconds. I mean, if we start the timer from the time he said high to her, Yeah, then he gets almost a minute. And so that's when Jim says he can't do it, and Elena asked him to wait while she goes in tidies up.

So that's when Elena is like, hey, I just have to go tidy up. Can you wait a second, and so she raners Dot's house. He goes to the bathroom, opens the door. That's when we see a very drunk bend against the wall and he's like, oh hi. She's like, I've found a ride home. He's like, no, no, I'll drive you. And I love that. He goes, no, no, I'll drive you. Yeah, and she's like, you're in no condition can stand up? Why don't you crash on the couch tonight and we'll talk in the morning. We'll crash somewhere else. So they leave, or she leaves him.

1:24:25 On the road Jim and Elena are driving, the car slides on ice standing over the side of the hill. The car gets stuck over the hill, and that's when we also see the storm as in full effect as Elena returns home and we see her hesitate to enter. Not Elena Janey returns home to the Carver residence and I love this because she's about to go into Mikey's room, which she would have seen he wasn't home, right right. She stares at the door and it's almost like she's ashamed, and then goes into her room, lays on the bed in the fetal position, and just falls asleep. Yeah, that's the good sleep. So that is also when we see them, excuse me here, I've lost my place. Talk amongst yourselves for a second. Boy, Here we go, So that is excuse me here, there we go. So outside, Mikey's still enjoying the storm, is running, He's sliding through the grass. He also comes to a street that he slides down on his back. And that's when he comes to a downed power line.

Yes, And then and then falls down and then just slowly slides on the ice. Yeah, completely unmoving. So he slides down the hill. Paul is back on the train reading his comic book until the train lights go down. The train stops because now the ice storm has stopped it as well. The next morning, Ben wakes up grabs his keys from the bull, which I love the shot because it's just the shot of the bull.

1:26:05 Him walking towards his hand gets it. It only keys of the bull. And that's when we also see that they Jim and Olena have arrived at the car for residence. He says the phone's out, offers her some dry sock and some rain boots in the guest room downstairs. Yea. So as she enters the guest room and there she finds Wendy and Sandy and Bet asleep. Wendy wakes up as she enters, and that's what she's like, naked. They're naked, yeah, and she's like get dressed. Ben, driving down the street stops as he comes to the down power line, also sees the red jacket and sees it something's over there. He gets out of the car, turns over Mikey's corpse and realizes it's him. He starts touching him to make sure that he's not you know that he's that he's dead, unfortunately, and that's when he picks up Mikey's corpse and begins to walk him back to the house because the car cannot get through the power line. At this point, he's only got one choice. Yeah, yeah, So he gets Mikey's body, he realizes who it is, and back out on the train.

He also sees that his brother has passed. Wendy goes to leave, but goes back to the door and gives him a big hug. Jim sob Jim sobbing awakens Janey from the bed, and we never see here actually get up. I'd never realized that.

Yeah, So I'm gonna say own it because to me, what the ice storm the film and the literal ice storm in the film represent is the idea that there's something bigger than us at play, and how dangerous it is to stop paying attention to what's going on around you and become self absorbed. All of the characters in this film, the main characters are self absorbed. Absolutely.

They give it the least amount of mind possible. Literally, that one scene is just her being like, you should take a cab home. It's gonna be dangerous. Yeah, nobody decides to not go to the swingers party because of the weather. Yeah, nobody decides not to go to the neighbor's house to fool around because of the weather. And the weather wins. We wins entirely. And to me, the weather could be a metaphor for any number of things that are outside of our own control.

Then when he looks at his oldest son, who was the only family member he couldn't confirm was okay, and he starts sobbing.

And my second recommendation, I'm gonna do two thousand and threes Pieces of April. I love Pieces of April. That's a phenomenal film. Yeah, Away Whard daughter invites her dying mother and the rest of her a strange family to her apartment for Thanksgiving dinner. If you want a film that's gonna tug at the heartstrings, make you laugh and honestly pretty unpredictable as well.

And suburban New Jersey. So it's got that element of coastalness, it's got a lot of it's all about the uncomfortableness of the age and everything and coming of age. So that's one that I really really think kind of fits that mindset. But there's another film that stuck in my craw as a movie I wanted to recommend that I never get the chance to recommend, and it's twenty thirteen's Nebraska Fair, directed by Alexander Payne.
