Henrique Couto and David Denoyer enter the icy Wichita, Kansas underworld of The Ice Harvest (2005), Harold Ramis’s dark Christmas crime comedy. John Cusack stars as mob lawyer Charlie Arglist opposite Billy Bob Thornton as Vic Cavanaugh, Connie Nielsen as Renata Crest and Oliver Platt as Charlie’s spectacularly intoxicated friend Pete. The screenplay by Robert Benton and Richard Russo adapts Scott Phillips’s novel into a Christmas Eve neo-noir full of mistrust, money and lethal bad decisions.
Charlie and Vic steal more than two million dollars from mob boss Bill Guerrard, but freezing rain keeps them in town while they wait for the roads to open. Charlie moves between strip clubs, bars and uneasy meetings, wondering whether Vic plans to share the money or eliminate him. Renata offers the possibility of escape, Pete supplies chaotic companionship, and every new encounter tightens a plot in which nearly everyone may be lying.
The hosts argue that the film is noir “to its bones,” even when its gallows humor becomes outrageous. They praise Cusack’s detached anxiety, Thornton’s controlled menace and especially the contrast between Cusack and Platt, whose scenes turn drunken self-destruction into comic gold. Green and blue lighting, reflective streets and the Christmas Eve setting give the crime story a cold visual identity. The discussion correctly locates the story in Wichita, Kansas—not Wichita Falls.
