Yes, we did, and this week's is the You're twenty twelve twenty twelve heartbreak film Stuck in Love, a film that I discovered in a very odd way. And we'll get to that in a second, but do you want to give a quick rundown of Stuck in Love? And we're finally in the two thousands. I was looking at the films we covered and I was like, man, it's a lot of nineties with just a smidge of eighties. Man, like, we gotta I mean, we have Mercy Christmas and just another Christmas. Okay, we did have Mercy. No, no, you're right, that's not

But anyway, go on, dude, all right, so we're talking about Stuck in Love from twenty twelve. This movie is one hour and thirty seven minutes, rated R for language, teen drug and alcohol use, and some sexual content. I hate when films have language in them, like don't talk at all, everybody. Sorry. I always laugh when I see it says like language, I'm like, well, that's vague. People are using speech to communicate R. So. The director and writer of this movie is Josh Boone. He directed Stuck in Love in twenty twelve. It was his directorial debut. He then went on to do The Faultnar Stars in twenty fourteen. Yes, the New Mutants in twenty twenty. I didn't know. He did the New Mutants Stand remake in twenty twenty. The mini series, Yeah, the one that Peacock or what was it CBS Plus At that point, I forget what they were called in I can't remember. Yeah, but I never watched it, did you? I haven't yet. I really really want to, okay, because I really like Faultner Stars and I actually really like the New Mutants as well. The Mutants is fun. He was also the writer, of course, on Stuck in Love. He also did All the We All We Had in twenty sixteen, The Pretenders in twenty eighteen. He wrote New Mutants in twenty twenty, and wrote On the Stand in twenty twenty as well. Well that makes sense.

5:59 Yeah, And like I said, he is the writer rector. The other writer is credited with creative development. That is Rick Bitzelberger and the reason that I put him on here is because this gentleman has a very interesting resume. So he is a writer on Embrace of the Vampire in nineteen ninety five, goes on to do Erotic Confessions the same year, Embrace the Darkness in nineteen ninety nine, Eddie's Million Dollar Cookoff in two thousand and three, the Disney Channel original movie What Yeah. Then goes on to do Crazy for Christmas for Lifetime in two thousand and five, All She Wants for Christmas in two thousand and six, and then Stuck in Love. He has created development on in twenty twelve. He was also an actor in nineteen eighty nine's but Where Children At Play? Ah, the New Jersey classic. Yes, I a buddy of mine was actually on set. Ohh she wear Children at Play? He was filming like BTS Yeah, And to this day he always says, man, it's so annoying. You know. I called Troma and I told him I have all this BTS stuff and I want to do something with it, and they don't even care. No, they don't. I bet they don't.

6:56 So then to finish us off with this gentleman. He was also the producer of Ultiple films in the nineties that just so happened to have the Penthouse title with them as Penthouse Pet of the Year Playoff in ninety one, Penthouse, Passport to Paradise in ninety one, Penthouse sat and Lace in ninety two, Penthouse on Campus in ninety five, And he also was the producer for Erotic Confessions in ninety five as well. Do you know who directed Erotic Confessions? That might have been a Jim Wnorski joint look like a series? I don't know, I I but uh, I would love to know how he ended up being a part of Stuck in Love. Yeah, Actually, that's really interesting in his creative development title for it, especially because, like I said, with Boone is the is the main writer and director on this. So what I mean, what does creative development usually mean in that ass Usually you don't credit someone. Is that That means he must have had some kind of writing credit, but they didn't want to give him a real writing credit.

7:46 Okay, Like he must have been very vaguely involved. So Erotic Confessions was a TV series and it had directors. It was directed by Peter Gaving's unch and Mary Ronan Hmm or Marcy Ronan. Excuse me, he's always messing up names. I don't really see anybody on here that I recognize. That's that's interesting, I mean, and it was. It was distributed by Millennium Pictures, which is kind of a stalwart in the studio for quite a while. I mean, they still are, but they went through a really bad restructure. When we were watching our disc right before, you know, we were getting ready for the movie and all the trailers before, and it was like, oh my god, I forgot Millennium was behind these movies like The Iceman. That was that was their big era of theatricals. Yeah, and that's why they almost went bankrupt. I think I would. I would say, that's very clear. I've I've done work with people from Millennium. I've never done business with Millennium, but literally with some of the people who work there. Uh, Millennium had they had no association with Magnolia, right, No, I don't think so. Yeah, no, Magnolia and Magnagnet Yeah, no, Magnolia. The most interesting about Magnolia was that one of the main owners was Mark Cuban. Yeah. Yeah, So finishing us off with our crew is the cinematographer tim Or. This gentle has quite a resume.

Oh, he shot the Backs. He shot the back I bet you. I bet you. He's worked with that group multiple times, because that's why I recognize the name more so. Then he goes on to do Little Manhattan in two thousand and five, You're the Dog in two thousand and seven, Choke in two thousand and eight, then Pineapple Express, and he shot Observant Reports. He did Thanks Driving nineport, one of my favorite movies of all time, Observant Report, so that he goes from Observant Report to Eastbound and Down. The same year does Bloodworth, Then he does Your Highness in twenty eleven, The Sitter Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Get Stuck in Love Joe with Nicholas Cage Oh twenty thirteen, U Search Party twenty fourteen, Our Brand Is Crisis twenty fifteen, Pee Wee's Big Holiday twenty sixteen The Professor, which is a really really good Johnny Depp movie where he finds out that he has cans and so he decides for his like last semester that he's going to teach the class how he wants to do all the things he wants to It's a really really cute movie. Palms in twenty nineteen, and then most recently, Stray's twenty twenty three straight Fun, Fun, Well tim or Yeah, I knew.

10:15 I knew that name, and now I know exactly why, because if he worked on Observant Report and The Baxter, those are two highly like deeply criminally underrated films solid that I that I adore, and two films that I tend to bring to everybody's attention is The Baxter. And I mean I literally was at my buddy Jeff's house a couple of months back and he had a copy of The Baxter on his shelf, and I literally went, dide, you have a copy of The Baxter and he went yeah, And I was like, did I give that to you? And he was like, no, I bought it myself, and I was like, weird. I would just assume I gifted it because there was a year I bought everybody a copy of The Baxter for Christmas. Baxter, Eddie Presley's Diehard Dive I did. I went to my used store. This was like twenty ten, twenty eleven era, maybe twenty twelve, thirteen. Yeah, I went to my used video store and just bought every DVD copy of die Hard. Then one year I bought every copy they had of Observant Report, and then one year I got every copy that was used on Amazon of Eddie Presley. So well, because you know, you give a gift, you know, someone to like a movie that I I mean, I think that those are all great films.

That's how hete my synopsis. A writer dealing with writer's block after his ex wife left him three years ago, must figure out how to navigate the ups and downs of raising his children, who are dealing with complexities of love. I like yours less, Thanks, Bud, I'm being honest. I've told you when yours are better, I like yours less. That's fine. You focus too much on the dad, the dad. I feel like the the the dad plot is actually like the C story. I would agree, No, I totally agree. So having that open with him, it makes the movie sound like it's All about Greg Kinnear, which which, by the way, is the name of his debut album, All About Greg Kinnear. So do you remember the first time you saw this? So I had a recommendation from a good friend who said that I needed to watch Stuck in Love. And that was you. Oh, it was it was me? It was okay. Yeah. And also quick side note, readily available on many streaming services. Don't don't hesitate to just look for it. You'll find it and you'll be able to watch it. So it was me who made you watch it. I didn't realize that, but in typical Dave fashion, you know, I probably waited a good couple of years before I took up that recommendation. Really, yeah, because it would have been twenty fourteen. Yeah, and that's I think twenty sixteen is when I watched this because I recalled that i'd gotten it at one of our stores that is unfortunately closed by this point. But I used DVD stories to good

13:35 to all the time, and I I buy movies and they sit on my shelf unfortunately sometimes, and this was one of them. And then, yeah, you and I are similar in the fact that when we're feeling pain or just feeling down that we sometimes will watch things that just devastate us more maybe yeah, uh maybe, And you had warned me that Stuck in Love was one of those movies. So I put it on and I was just absolutely blown away by the film. I just I really really liked it, and it didn't make me feel any better. But at the same time, I really enjoyed the movie. I mean, and what really matters is that you didn't feel That's what helps me so well. Stuck in Love for me was a random Netflix find. I was up one night probably it was probably like midnight or eleven o'clock at night or something, and it would have been twenty fourteen. And the reason I know it's twenty fourteen is because right after I watched this movie, I was like, well, what else has this guy done? And and Fault Stars was coming out, like coming out, it was coming out in like three weeks. I remember that. So I start watching it and I'm like, oh, this is cool, like this is cute. I like movies like this. And I watched it all the way through, stayed up till like three in the morning, crying my eyes out.

14:45 That was completely engrossed in Stuck in love. It sucks you in. It does, And it's really a movie mostly about the most painful and hellish parts of being in love, but very different directions. Yeah, no, absolutely, it covers so many with the story of the family and how everybody is dealing with some something. It opens up the story to go all sorts of places. I mean, from young love to old love, all of that is exactly, and from dating a problem person to being the problem person. Yeah, it's it's very very interesting how they how they do it. So before we jump into this, I have to ask Dave, what's your greatest heartbreak? Share it on the show You Chose, You Chose Stuck in Love? Now you can't not talk about heartbreak. I can absolutely not talk about heartbreak. Why so why wouldn't you talk about it? Because I don't want to share that right now, right now? How long ago was it college? Oh my god, that was like twenty five years ago. Oh, come on, do you even? Movie will be right back, Welcome back to do you even movie? I was a shitty person to somebody and it's oh that's the worst one. Took me a while to really come to terms with the fact that when you when you chase after somebody after you've wronged

16:18 them, and you try, you know, and you and you technically get several chances from them and fuck everyone up. Yeah, you kind of have to look in the mirror and be like, Okay, maybe maybe I was the problem with that. I can see why you were. You were resisting because nothing's worse than when you're the asshole. See luckily I am perfect, so uh but no, I it was it was a situation where I let myself get into a mindset that really wasn't I don't know how to say this, and just I let somebody into my life that I really enjoyed spending time with him being around, and the pay that I gave them was of some really shitty moves on my part. In our we weren't even really dating per se, but it was just we we enjoyed each other's company, and things went really south when some issues arose that I didn't handle properly. But I was also in my early twenties issues. Yeah, I mean, I'm trying not to legitimately like make you spill all your but at the same time, you're really just making us want to know more. Well, maybe maybe we'll get there at the end of the episode. I mean, I'm just I'm just asking, you know, So this is you were with a person.

17:33 Yeah, we'll assume a man and no, no, but you were in a kind of situation ship I guess. Yeah. In college that there was. I went to an art school and everybody was very promiscuous, myself included. So you know, we we have too many jokes. I'm not going to go that's fine, but a large portion of us scot around, best way I can say it. And this person in particular, I really really had feelings for. I really enjoy I really enjoyed their company, and you know, we we were thinking about getting serious for a while. But then I had another prior relationship opened back up in Troy while I was in Mason, and yeah he was. He went to school about hour and a half south of where he had grown up. So when that relationship opened back up, I kind of pursued the one in Troy, not even taking into account of the other person's feelings back when I'm oh, man, that is crummy.

18:26 It was very shitty. Ouch. Yeah, so why were you such a cop? Yeah? No, I was like there there there's no denying it. On that one like that, that is something like I still I don't hold tight to it because you have to move past those things. You can't live in the past. But like that is still one that'll kind of pop up every now and then. I'm just like, man, if there is one relationship or you know, whatever you want to call it, that that really still stands out today. That was just kind of like, damn, I really shouldn't have done that that. It's that one. I think you should suffer more. You should hold that closer to you all the time. She's block be on LinkedIn. Please no, David. Yeah, that's the saddest story I've ever heard. I don't even have a sound effect.

I well, first of all, you should talk about your personal life more, because I might not have asked that question if I knew that story. That's numero uno ye fair I see. I mean, I have some big heartbreaks in my life. But my first girlfriend was very similar to the girl in UH and Stuck in Love, And that's one of the reasons that it clicked with me and hit me so hard. I was with an absolute train wreck of a girl. She wasn't a drug addict, but honestly being a drug addict, which will you know, we'll get to that in a minute, you know, let me get the spoiler button spoiler alert. But the girl who was addicted to drugs like that, at least you can kind of excuse, like, oh, you know, you need to get help.

20:14 No. I was just with like a crazy person, like a truly insane person who gas lit me and threatened me and made me afraid to leave. And I was like, seventeen, Yeah, it's a lot. So it's a lot to take on as your first relationship, man. And but you know, I think that it's given me a I guess I would call it an interesting perspective on relationship because I don't I'm not a cynic at all. I'm actually a pretty obnoxious romantic. But thanks. But I'm not saying like you're you're the mister matchmaker, but I mean you are. You are a romantic. I know I am a romantic, not a romantic, because now there's all these new words we have to learn freaking millennials. I'm an old one, you're a young one. It's sad, but no, no, but that being said, it does kind of like paint you in a different way. Yeah, it kind of paints love in a different way. Absolutely, And so I love when stories are very complicated about emotions and feelings.

21:18 And also I really love the idea that this young guy's first relationship, yeah, was so troubled because early on in the movie, Greg Kinnear's character is literally like, you need to get in trouble, go do some things because like he read some quote from some author, which I thought was the dumbest fucking quote I've ever heard. Yeah, that said that like, by the time you're twenty, you should have all the experience you need to write a lifetime's worth of books. Yeah, And I was like, well, number one, Yeah, if you're like fucking Hemingway and you just drink yourself to let them blow your brains up, sure, yeah, but you know, no, if you actually want to like make it to seventy also, that makes me mad because that makes me think that people were smarter than me in their twenties, and I don't appreciate that kind of insult. I will say I was seldom the asshole. I'm being honest, but I could have picked them better. So that's my big one is like, I definitely when I was young, I definitely fell for that trap of like I can help you, I can I can fix you. And and that's a trapping I think a lot of young men fall into, and a lot of older men fall into. I mean, it's just it's just a man thing to want to help and uh yeah. So you know, there's an old joke where it's like, whenever you meet a girl who's like stunningly attractive, like traditionally a gorgeous and she's a single, it's like, what's wrong with her? And they always say like, oh, I'm really picky or whatever. And then

She also was in Noah in twenty fourteen, Spider Man Homecoming twenty seventeen, Only The Brave twenty seventeen, to lead a Bad Angel, the Snow Pierce series on Netflix, I Believe, and also recently appeared in Top Gun Maverick in twenty twenty two. Oh yeah, she's amazing in Top Gun Maverick. And I want to mention first time I remember her was the Rocketeer. Oh yeah, I watched the rocket Teer.

I don't That was when they tried to make him an action star and it failed miserably. I do remember that because they basically like recut the trailer to looked like Taken because the trailer did so poorly well, which is funny because the first Taken trailer, it's like the worst trailer I've ever seen in the history of cinema. And that's saying because the movie's so good. Yeah, that's why I can say that, so so bluntly. So she does Stuck in Love in twenty twelve, goes on to do The English Teacher in twenty thirteen, Mortal Instrument, City of Bones in twenty thirteen, Love Rosie in twenty fourteen. Then there was mank Curve of Your Enthusiasm in Honey twenty one, Windfall in twenty twenty two, and she's also on Emily in Paris, which has been on Netflix, I want to say, for like three years, now I think that was third season and she's the star. Okay, yeah, I've not seen a lot of those. Ye if you have, I have yet. Oh good stuff. All right, you ready to get into the movie. Sure? All right, So Stuck in Love we open with a voiceover as we see Rusty who is the Sun, and he's looking at Kate in the classroom, and you hear him say, I remember the hurt, looking at her hurt, and that becomes kind of a theme for the film.

28:03 Yeah, yeah, it definitely sets the tone. Yeah, and he's looking at this cute young girl who is asleep at her desk yep, as her nose starts to lead just a little bit. Yeah, and when she wakes up, her response is just like, oh yeah, it does that sometimes. Yeah, foreshadowing. I mean, all I'm saying is, you know, looks like you got a troubled young lady. Better throw your better get her pregnant, now save yourself the trouble. So I do want to point out that Rusty is played by nat Wolf, who many will know from his role as the brother in Hereditary. Yeah. This is I think like four years before Hereditary, and he looks the exact same. Yeah, he definitely could play. He played a high schooler for like a good eight years.

So he is looking at Kate her nose against the bleed, so he points it out to her and she says, yeah, it does that sometimes, and he just kind of watches her as she leaves the classroom and goes to her boyfriend after class, and you kind of see that he is just kind of crushing on her. You think, yeah, just a bit. I like that her boyfriend is like such a chad. Oh yeah, Like like they're not even trying to be subtle. They're just like, here's this fucking macho chad and you're like, okay, cool. So then we meet Samantha who's talking about her life, and then she's talking to a guy at a party and just has all these life I guess theories that she's going about, and then she basically ends it by saying, you know, do you want us to go back to your place? And fuck, I mean she says it pretty much exactly like yeah, yeah, yeah, just bluntly, and he like chokes on his drain. It's a very nice silly intro to the movie. YEA, to make sure you understand this is a very talented Chlamydia Riddle writer. She explains that that's what they both want on one night's stan. He agrees. They go back to his dorm and she notices that he has a copy of Stephen King's It on his nightstand. She asked him if he's a King fan, and he's like, no, that's my roommates. He's like, do you like it? And she's like, no, my brother loves Steve. Well, you got the order of Reverse? Oh did I? She asks you like that? Or he asks her, do you like Steve? It makes me think of my brother. He's lying. So they begin to strip and they get to it, and then we meet Bill who is smoking a cigarette in his car and he gets out and he sneaks around the house and we see that he is looking on on his ex wife, who has played by Jennifer Connley who's Erica, and he is watching her and her new boyfriend is

Him and his son are preparing Thanksgiving dinner. It's a really cute moment between them. You know, he's opening the wine, they're putting the turkey together, they're doing all the side dishes. Well, I mean that's the whole opening credits. Yeah, is just they're they're making Thanksgiving dinner and it's insanely wholesome. I really enjoyed it. So his daughter comes over, and it's funny because when she comes to the door, at first, he jokingly shuts in her face and then opens it back like angrily yeah, And they all sit down to dinner and Samantha announces that her book is getting published through King's Publisher, which is, oh god, I can't write the scribner scribner yeah, Which that's when Rusty is like, oh, you're using King's Publisher. And that's when Samantha declares that there's a lot of publishers that

And she also unveils that she didn't publish they're not publishing her book, just saying hi, which offends Bill because he was the one that edited the book, read over that book and helps her with it. And she is completely going with something different. Yeah. She reveals that over the summer she wrote a totally different book and that's the book that they took.

So Rusty kind of loses a little bit and Martin looks at him ask him if he's high, and that's when Erica excuses them most of the kitchen, and she asked about the legitimacy of Sam's book being published, and you know, what's going on with Rusty, And she asked what if Sam said anything? And Rusty lies that she said Hi.

She wanted to prove that she could do it on her own, which is such a like fortunate white people thing to do. It's like, I didn't want to have the advantage of having a famous dad who was the writer. I wanted to do something really hard by myself. It's like, dude, if you knew what a life was like where you couldn't get any of that stuff done, you'd take every opportunity you got. Well, but it's a cute content and it's a cute moment too, because you know he's he's kind of just pouting on the beach and she's like, like, you don't do you even want to read the new one? And he's like nope, no fucking way. Yeah, and that's when she's like, well, I brought you a copy. I can leave it on your desk and I can even sign it for you.

Kate grabs him after class, telling him that she liked the poem and they talk about their Thanksgiving before a boyfriend calls her over. We see Bill and reading on the beach when Tricia, his neighbor played by Kristen Bell, comes running up. Ah. Yes, she comes, jogging up in her sports braad tights. Yes and uh, and says she has twenty minutes and they gotta make it quick. Yeah, and then she starts running toward the house. Yeah. And we reveal that they are having a kind of well, uh, he's not having, he's having and uh, they're having what I would call deeply transactional setting.

And he says that's the kind of thing that would grab people to read a book. It made me have to read more. Yeah, and that's his excuse for reading further. And that's when Bill states that, you know, Samantha's a good writer, and he can be a good writer too, but the reason Samantha is a good writer is because she's courageous.

37:15 And that's when Rusty comments that she's promiscuous. There's a difference. But Bill goes on to say that you know, she is out there living life. You need to go live your life. One of the reasons English can be so hard to learn is because we speak extremely poetically. But a lot of people don't realize that. Lewis tells her he'll see her in class, stating that they have advanced fiction together, and he remembers her and she walks off. Rusty then takes Kate to his house. He's putting ice on her knees, as Bill comes in asking who she is. Rusty introduces her, and Bill tells her that he's heard a lot about her and tells her that they have something better for her knees. So then he tells them also that they're to sleep in separate rooms.

Bill states he gets a bit depressed her in the holidays, and Christia reminds him he's divorced. He gets depressed about a lot of things, and that yeah, because she mentions, like, ah, the lights and the music and coming home and my husband has the one ever set up, and you're just like, that's when you actually realize she's married. Yeah, And then and her attitude is like, you need to be married, yeah, like you're that's why you're so sad because you're alone. You need to remarry remarried sites yeah. And it's just like it is hilarious because she's literally cheating on her husband right now. She is, and she's like, no, marriage is like the perfect thing, Like that's why I'm not sad. It's like you're having an affair, all right, what do you even? Movie? Will be right back, welcome back to do you even? Movie? So she

We next see Sam at a barr talking to a different guy discussing evolution, but he says he doesn't believe in evolution and excuses himself. That's when Lewis comes over. Lewis comes in behind her, asking if she was hitting on him, joking that he thinks he's a Mormon, before asking if they want to get out of here. She reminds him that she's not interested in him, but he steals her jacket, telling her that she can follow him if she wants to get it back. We next see him at a restaurant and he asked her about her favorite books. Sam calls him out, though, warning him that that's basically wanting to get to know personal information so they can act like they have a connection together. Yeah, and and well, and she's afraid that if she tells him her books, yeah, then he'll just go like, that's my my favorite book, which is which is extra funny that for a person who who wants completely no strings attached sex with no emotion or whatever, She's like, I don't want you lying to make me like you.

Yeah, and she's she's wearing they reveal she's like not wearing any she's wearing only her underwear under her winter jacket. Yeah. So although it's California, or is it California, don't even so, it's upstate New York. He it was filmed in North Carolina, So I don't know what they're if they're faking another place instead of North Carolina. But that's therst film. Well, it looks like North Carolina because actually, as though about it, because the big thing is that we may not have mentioned Cane and them live on a beach beach house. Yeah, so right on the beach, so there's constantly the beach right there. So it made me think California. But uh, that makes sense to be Carolinia.

Yes, she's clearly extremely ill. Yeah, so he begins to sit down and read to her. As Sam enters the house, and the mother looks over and she asks, am I seeing things? Or is that an angel at the door. Lewis jokes that that's definitely not an angel, and we next see that Bill is out Christmas shopping as he runs into Erica and he asked if she'd like to join, and she's at first hesitats and he's like, oh, it'll just take about to minutes, and that's when we see them sitting next at a a bookstore together as Bill tells her that he's going to move on with his life and he tells her that Tricia was the one who said that, as he confesses that they have had time together, or they've had time together and they've been having an affair, or she's having an affair. Yeah yeah, She's like, oh yeah, I always remembered you having a question her and her having a husband. So Bill tells her that he's not a great writer, he's a great rewriter, and he sees that a future with her could be different. It's talking about Erica his wife, his ex wife, and he also tells her that he has not written anything since she left, and Erica tells me he's a great writer and not to waste all his imagination on her. We see them getting ready to leave as Erica confesses to him that she has bad days too, not sure that she made the right decision, basically telling him that she still thinks about

So we see Samantha with Lewis's mom, stating that it was nice to meet her. She goes to lead, but the caregiver states that there's hot chocolate in the kitchen. As we see sam sitting with her Lewis in the kitchen, and that's when he tells her that his mother has a brain tumor. And he tells her that he doesn't want her to feel sorry for him because he's enjoyed the back and forth that they fight between them, but she does, so she dates him. Yes, literally, that's basically what happens is he finds out he has a dying mom and then well, he says he says he'll forgive her stalking if he'll allow her to allow him to take her on a date. Basically basically, so Lewis tells her that he'll read her book on break because Sam gives him a copy of the book and he says he'll read it over break. We see Sam and Bill falling and are failing at making Christmas cookies as Rusty comes in dressed nice, stating that he's going to go over to Kat's and give her her gift. Now. Sam asked about how serious they are, and Bill admits that he knows that they're having sex, which is a really cute moment because this is just like really ah. So Sam comments on the chipperness that Bill is expressing and he tells her that he's going to move on, New Year, new start. At Kate's, we see Rusty is given a bright eyed CD by Kate, telling her telling him that it's a roadmap to her soul, and that's when he gives her a copy of it, but not just any copy. As I said, what we were watching, boy, here we go, Dave go on, talk

It's a pretty good deal, right. So he gives her a copy of Stephen Gingzette, telling her that it's a book to him like Moby Dick, and she will cry at the end, and that's when they begin to make out, and it's a really sweet scene. It is. It's a very cute scene, yeah, because he basically explains to her, like you don't understand. It's like Moby Dick. It's it's not about a killer climent, it's about every thing. And by the end you will cry. And she's like, you cried, and he's like, yeah, you will too. So we next see Lewis and Sam at the restaurant on their date and she questions about reading her book, and that's when he questions if she really feels a cynical about love and marriage as she states in the book. She confesses that she did make up most of what happened in it, but one thing that she didn't lie about was catching her mother having sex with Martin on the beach when her and her father were still again.

And that's a pretty heartbreaking thing because basically, she reveals that what she remembers so clearly is her mom being drunk and having her hands all over him yah, and him saying what about your husband? So she comments that he makes her feel less cynical, and we see them sitting in a car discussing their favorite songs TV shows and he tells her his favorite song is a track by Elliott Smith and she asked him to play it, and we see the song I cannot approve of of Elliott Smith. I mean he had some good songs, yeah, but that was necessary. So we see him put the track on and we just see that Sam just starts getting moved by it, and she just starts crying. In states that she's really scared right now. She doesn't want to get hurt, and Lewis tells her that he won't hurt her, and they share a kiss, and we next see them skating together at an ice rink and it's really cute. It is very cute.

And she finally picks up an outfit for him, and we see Bill going to a restaurant for a date.

53:53 The date goes pretty well that we don't get any dialogue really that we see them talk, yeah, and we see them talking having dinner and then they hug and that's when he drives home. But on the way home, he just makes a stop. That's the saddest part, Dave. Yeah, he's driving home and he seems happy. Yeah, he seems like he's juiced up the way I think anybody would be after a good first date. But then he drives to his ex wife's house again, Yes he does, and he goes up to her window and he leaves his putting his wedding ring on the windowsill. But then he realizes she's reading his book, one of his books, and she's alone. She's just said she's all by herself, just reading one of his books, and the fire can't go out, Nope, And he snatches the ring back and he takes off. It's one of my favorite scenes in the whole film. It's so good. So we then see Rusty and Kate pulling up to Erica's house. As she meets Kate, we see Erica, Martin, Kate, and Rusty all enjoying an evening. They're having dinner, playing just dance, and then Kate is later in the bathroom going through prescription medication and gets caught by Erica and she says, oh, I'm just looking for some aspert and she's like, okay, it's right there, but we can already see that Eric is a bit suspicious of that. That's a weird moment. Yeah yeah. So we next see Bill with Kate and Rusty and they are attending an event that's for Samantha's book promotion and Leslie the promoter. It takes Bill to meet other publishers. Rusty and Kate go up to Sam and Lewis and Stephen King. Discussion starts between the two of them.

55:15 So then Kate, Kate, and Sam excuse themselves and go to the bar, and that's when we see that Samantha gets a champagne for Kate, who once again is sixteen years old. But at first the bartenders like, you know, well how old does she let me see your ID? And He's like, all right, you know, I'll do this, but I'm these are your drinks. I'm giving these to you because you're taking these not Yeah. He basically does like a cute little like eh whatever. So Bill goes up to Leslie goes up to Bill and invites him to come speak to the attendees, which are his students because he's a college professor. Bill goes up and tells them about a Raymond Carver line that he liked, which was listening for a beating heart. When you hear it, it's the best to decipher all your abilities, basically stating that every writer is looking for that heartbeat to be able to decipher what they want to write and what they want to give to the people. It's a good moment where he actually sounds confident.

56:04 Yeah, and yeah, it's a really beautiful moment. It's short and sweet, like he doesn't take a lot of time to talk, like because he even says, you know, this is my daughter's event, and you know, that's when he congratulates Sam again and they share a hug. Later that evening, he's sitting on the side and Erica joins Bill, sitting with a beer in a smoke and she watches Sam stating that she's done her with she's all, she's done with her life, and she doesn't want her to, like, you know, not be a part of this because she's just really troubled by the fact of this relationship they have now. And then we get probably one of the most heartbreaking scenes. I mean, you mean in this until three minutes later, I mean, there's that too. So Bill tells her that he believes Sam swiped would he believed to be one of her favorite books from the library, hoping to find a piece of her in it before telling her to go talk to her daughter. So he sends Erica to go talk to him. Erica kisses him on the cheek and goes over to Sam, and Sam is speechless as her mom walks up with the book and she's like, you know, I'd love for you to sign this, and Sam, being how she is, says, oh, okay, and what's your name? Yeah? What's your name? Yeah? And then and she's like I don't want this to be a scene or she's like, okay, no name, sign it without the prescription and personalization. So of course this just breaks are down and she goes running, and that's when Rusty finds her out back and he confesses that he's lost. He's lost track of Kate. He doesn't know where Kate is. He's looking for her. So he goes up to Sam. He asked her if she's seen her, and she's like, no, like we got some champagne. He's like, you gave her champagne?

57:29 Yeah, and then he basically like she's a drug addict. Yeah, And then they're like what he's like, was a drug add a drug addict, which also we didn't really realize he fully accepted that. Yeah, yeah, well I think he always knew, but yeah, he didn't quite accept that. But so they find out that she went back to then got more Champagne said it was for the guest of honor, and then left with some god named Gus named Gus. Yes, it's always a guy named Gus. So the whole family leaves and goes to find Kate and they arrive at us apartment, which I would love to know how they got the address. Oh, well, it's he was a student. Oh that's right. Yeah, And because remember, somebody goes, oh, she left with Gus. Yeah, so I'm guessing that that was a friend because he was in student housing.

58:10 Yeah. Yeah. So they they find Kate unconscious in the bedroom because they go into the apartment and freaking Greg grabs Gus by the nose, slams him against the wall and throws him to the ground when he opens the door. Can hear just grabs him by the nose really hardly. He is like ah, and then he throws him down and his nose is all bleeding, and he just starts kicking him and kicking him, not like he's not like killing him, No, he just like when he realizes what's going on, so he gives him a couple of kicks. He tells him that she's in the bedroom. They did some coke, but everything's fine. But that's when Erica comes out carrying an unconscious Kate. So they go back to the blanket. Yeah, they go to the car and they rush Kate to the er. And this is heartbreaking because Rusty's crying. And then when Rusty is upset and Samanth the season, she starts crying as well, Well, did you miss why he cried? Well, he cries because she's she's unconscious. No, he cries because he looks under the blanket and sees she's naked. Oh she's left with the guy. Yeah, yeah, though, that's why, I mean, that's why he cries. He pulls the blanket aside just a little bit, and when he realizes she's naked, that's when he starts crying his eyes out because that's when he realizes, like, oh my god, this girl I'm in love with had like a couple drinks and immediately started sleeping with somebody else and it's really tragically super heartbreaking. So sometime passes and we find Bill at his home, hard at work writing at his desk. Him and Sam later sit on the beach as she talks about Lewis and Will.

59:27 He asks her who's Lewis. She sees Tricia or he sees Tricia running up on the beach, and he tells Sam to go wake Rusty, and Sam admits to knowing about them sleeping together before she goes upstairs to find Rusty asleep in the closet listening to the Bright Eyes album the Cake gave him. Now, this is where the movie really hooked me forever. She goes into the bedroom. Her brother's not in bed. Yeah, she goes and opens the closet door, and he is asleep in the closet. Yea with the iPod, I know, right dating it, but with the volume so loud you're like hearing you're coming out of the earbuds, because like that's the only way he could fall asleep, because he's so unbelievably heartbroken. He's listening to the album she gave him on full volume while he's asleep. That I really believe you could only come up with from real heartbreak. Absolutely. I believe that the writer director did that or at least felt like doing that, and that was one of the things that really made it made the material connect with me.

1:00:30 That's what I love about this movie is, you know, it is not your it's not a rom com, it's a drama dy but everything is realistic in it. Every every problem that's faced is something that most encounter. Would you call it a drama? I feel like there aren't any big laughs. I would say it's drama. I would just call it a drama. It's got a couple laughs, but there's no big It's not like crazy stupid love or something. It's not like John Hughes. Yeah, yeah, no, No, there's no like huge laughs. There's just a couple of chuckles. Although you know, John Knty probably could have been proved this movie. I agree. He could have been the neighbor here that Keane was sleeping with. Yes, yeah, I love Christmas, the light, the music, my husband decorating the tree. Do You Even? Movie will be right back, Welcome back to Do You Even? Movie? So we see Rusty and Jason getting high in a car and they go into a convenience store to buy snacks as kate X walks in and starts chasing them throughout the store yep and catches them in the parking lot and eats the ship the ever loving hell out of them. Great great visual storytelling us his friend is driving him to the hospital in his face all mashed in, and then we see we see Keaneer's character and the sister taking care of him, and that when we get a voice over from Kate of a letter that she wrote Rusty basically explaining that you know, she's grateful to him. She understands like he wanted to help her,

1:02:00 but she can only help herself any hope, and she hopes that he'll still be around when she figures that out. She doesn't really say I hope you'll be around so much. I mean she says, you know, she says, I hope I can deserve someone like you, someone who says good to me as you are. No, it came off as like a f off as well. Yeah, And honestly I always felt like that scene was kind of was sweet, but it was almost naive, like as a writer like to still angelicies, I'm gonna say that like it's a word it might be or angel eyes or what every angel eyes, But make her still this like wonderful person who just needs to work on herself. And I'm not saying she's all bad. Yeah, I mean, drug addicts have a massive struggle.

1:02:50 But she hurt him effortlessly. I mean for real, like you're not she did just get drunk and cheat on him. Yeah, she got drunk at an event she was there with him for his sister, with his whole family there, Yeah, and then left with the stranger yeah, to go drink and do drugs and then completely you know, gets gets fucked up well and have sex with him. Yeah, Like that's not something that like she has something in her that hates him. Yeah, detests that he cares about her. Yeah, she needs massive help. It's not just about the drugs and stuff like that, because she could have you know, done this to him when she was out by herself or with friends, not literally at an event that important. I mean, maybe you know, maybe I'm out of line. Keep in mind too, that she does in the letter by saying, you know, I finished the book and you're write I did cry.

1:03:50 Yeah, she does give him the closure of that sense that you know, she did take his gift to heart and that she did, you know, read it and does think about him in make sense? I saying, maybe I'm too stupid because I've never been drunk and I've never been high, But I wouldn't call that stupid. But I mean, I get what you're saying, but I'm just saying, like, I feel like no amount of champagne would make you just completely forget that you exist in the world. I mean, we don't get much of her past. We just know that she has one well, and apparently her parents are not that absent, no, because at the one point when they go in there for Christmas, he's like, you know, what about your parents, and she's like, oh, they never come up here anyway. Yeah, But then she mentions that, like her parents took her to rehab and are taken care of her. Yeah, So it seems like she just had an aversion to her parents. I will say, I mean, maybe I'm overthinking this, but I will say that, like, I do think it's odd that we don't get a scene of them either going to the hospital or the parents coming, like even if it was just a montage. Oh no, no, no, no, because she's gone, Yeah she's not She's completely gone. Yeah. Uh, that's it. Her character is gone because in the world of our our you know, young man character, she's never going to return. Yeah. That was the experience that is going to mar his life. Yeah, and we all have those absolutely. So I thought it made great sense that she was gone.

1:05:13 I just pardon me. Thought the letter was almost too nice. Was My only problem was I was like, I mean, like, I wouldn't again. Maybe I'm just too cynical. I imagine if if that had happened, she would have never spoke to him again. And I mean there there is absolutely that too. Walked on LinkedIn. Bill confronts Rusty about him coming home drunken Stone and it tells him to get it together, and Rusty makes the comment basically stating, you know, is that what you did when you when you divorced mom? And that pisses Kenear's character off. Bill off and he's like, Okay, you're grounded. Yeah, And of course Rusty's like, you can't ground me, and he's like, what am I gonna do? So then later on the beach, Bill confront Sam about her treatment of Erica, confessing an affair that he had that she had six months and how she had Oh yeah, yeah, he had an affair when she was six months old. Yeah, that's right, and six months he waited and she took him back, and that's when she They basically made a pack that like, if that happened again, that they would wait, but if she ever did something as stupid as what he did to wait for he would wait for him the way she waited for her. Yeah. So, Sam, hearing this, gets angry that he kept it from her, and that's when Bill finds Rusty hardaway typing. Sam gets woken up crying by Lewis, who tells him, or tells her, that his mom has passed and he doesn't know what to do. Yeah, so, which is one of my favorite parts.

1:06:30 You know, it's painful, but it's one of my favorite parts. Because she has not spoken to her boyfriend in what we assume is at least a few weeks. Yeah, and now you know, the phone rings and it's because his mother. And we also got to mention that the reason that Erica was at Samantha's event is because he invited her. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, he invited the mother, which makes sense because he has more of an understanding of the finality of you know, having a mother around and stuff like that. So Sam in tears, you know, hears this, and she tells him she's coming over, and she runs over see them sitting together on the couch crying together. We go through the funeral, we go through the wake as they're looking at a photo album and we see some really cute pictures. We then see Sam walking up to Erica's door and her mother opens the door and they just embrace each other and start crying. Yeah, it's a beautiful moment. I really loved it. So Rusty is typing away at his computer when his phone rings and a voice ask is Rusty and he says, this is Rusty. He goes, oh, hey, this is Stephen King and it actually yeah. So he tells him that Sam sent him his story and he thinks it's damn good and he sent it to the science fiction magazine that he thinks will like it that used to publish one of his stories early on. He also tells him to tell his dad High and he thinks that Suit Monkeys is an absolute classic, which is one of Kinnear's books.

1:07:40 Overcome, Rusty tries to express his love the King, but he says, you know, I can't put it put into words, and he's like, you know, I just thank you for stating that you like my story, and King corrects him, he said, I didn't say I liked it. I loved it. That's a really good moment. It is. And the fact that his sister sent it to him that which makes sense there was the same publisher. Yeah. So we next see Rusty and Bill making Thanksgiving dinner again. He sets a place for Erica, but then he takes it away. Lewis and Sam come to the door as the four sit down, they're enjoying their dinner. As the bell rings, Rusty goes to the door and opens it. But why does he go to the door because he thinks it's Oh Kate Kate. Ye. He says that he did invite Kate, which I think is is a sad revealed too, which is that he invited Kate to Thanksgiving because now she's probably out of rehab. Yeah, she's never coming, She's never coming, She's never coming. No. No, So he opens the door and instead finds his mom at the door and she makes a joking comment of I pictured your dad opening the door. Can you close it and go get him? Yeah? Which I love that. That's such a great and I love it too, because he shuts the door, and we're just on Erica's side of the door the entire time, we don't see anything that happens inside. So when Bill opens the door, he's surprised as they exchange highs and Erica tells him that she got lost and asking if there's still a place for her at the table. Yeah, and she understands if there isn't, He says, you know, we have food, we have the company. We'd love to have you. So he invites Erica in, embraces her and apologizes, and Sam sees her mom says hi. As they make a place for her at the table. Rusty announceds he sold his first story, thanking Sam, but she reminds him that he wrote it. She just sent it off to one of his favorite heroes. No, she says, I send it off to the one person who would actually like Yeah,

1:09:13 which is which is such a great line because that sounds insulting, except it's like I said it to the one person to actually like it, your favorite author, favorite world. It's like it's like such a great way to put like such a big favorite. So Erica makes a toast Rusty wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving, and we just close out with the film of Stuck in Love with a nice ending just like that. Yeah, and I love that it came full circle. We see them making Thanksgiving dinner again, just like at the beginning of the film, and I've yeah, I've always loved this movie. I like even even though I can get a little cynical about the young love element. And also I do I go back and forth about Conley coming back. I get that because she was gone three years. Yeah, she was. It's a long time actually, probably more around four to be honest, because we're starting the year and it's already in three years maybe, so it's probably about but that's a long time. And the idea that like if you just kind of well, but he doesn't just kind of wait around.

1:10:13 He does kind of date. Yeah, but at the end of the day he just carries the torch. I don't know. It's like part of me doesn't like the message that sends. I get that, but at the same time, I also love though the idea that like that that a kind of true foundational love could work out. So I get mixed about it, but overall, it makes me happy. The only two parts I cry. I cry when the mother dies and I cry when their mom shows up. So I feel that though it's it's a really really good movie, it just has a lot of, like I said, just realistic takes on love that I think many can relate to. And it does things with the stories that you don't expect that make it even more interesting in that fact, because I mean the whole thing going down at the at the promotion for the book event, I mean that is such a big scene that you really just don't expect.

1:11:00 Yeah, for sure, No, absolutely, it really, And I love the way it just puts the family into action and you know they've they've been at each other all throughout the movie, and that at this one point they all come together. I mean, Keneer goes in and grabs that guy, grab it by the nose. This has gotta happen, the way it's well, And then when he's walking out, he tells him you're expect expect, You're lucky. That's all. Yeah, that's all. Yeah, No, I mean, I just I love the way that the family just assembles at that point, and then the way that they all come back at the end. You know, it may be kind of cheesy in that sense, I will say, but it just something. It's cheesy at all. The family came together the way families do. They come together when there's an emergency, they come together when there's something serious going on. So the fact that they all loaded into the suv and when Keneer and uh Conley go up to the apartment, they make the daughter hold the sun back, Yeah, because they're afraid that, you know, they don't want him to be a part of this because he might lose his cool or whatever. It's very I love it.

1:11:53 I love the way it's handled very much. So what rating are you gonna give it? Oh? Well, that's tricky. Do we may be on the same page on this. No we're not. No, No, because you're stupid, Okay, go on, go on. I can't lie. I think this movie is a true classic. I think that it's I think that it's themes about love and loss. Everything it does is so strong. Yeah that I would say you have to own it. You think it's a by it. I think it's a by it. I I think that if you don't, if you're not moved by that film, like I don't know what's wrong with you? Yeah, I put it as a rented with a Bayot caveat on it because I think it's a very good movie. It's not exactly a fun watch, but it's a movie that it's kind of a fun watch. It's got some it's got some heavy moments that that I mean are are not fun. Oh no, without a doubt. But I mean, but like the cast is attractive and captivating. Performances are amazing. Yeah, the performances are solid as hell. It's a movie. I think everybody should watch it. I mean, if it if it is one that really does movie, which I hope it does, it's an absolute by it.

But I think it's one that you should absolutely seek out because this movie is very underrated, I think. Yeah, And we always like to end the show with the recommendation. I am going to give one from twenty fourteen to night Stand. I Love two nights. Two Nights Stand is the story of a snowstorm that forces two people who made an online connection to unwillingly extend their one night stand as the blizzard goes through the night.

And one of my favorite things is that, like in high school, his girlfriend ended up going to the dance with the other guy. In college, his girlfriend ended up going back to the other guy. So now he's an adult, he meets this girl and then her old high school sweetheart shows up from town and he's like, because he knows that he's that's the best phrase. He knows he's the Baxter. So anyway, that would be my other season.
