Scary Movie (1991) The Forgotten Horror-Comedy for Halloween!
Henrique and David spotlight Scary Movie (1991), Daniel Erickson’s regional Texas horror-comedy—not the 2000 Wayans brothers spoof. John Hawkes stars as Warren, a painfully anxious teenager who joins friends at a small-town Halloween festival and becomes convinced that an escaped patient has entered the local spook house. Suzanne Aldrich plays Barbara, while Ev Lunning appears as Sheriff Pat Briggs in an all-Austin production built around one increasingly disastrous night.
The film keeps Warren and the audience uncertain about what is staged, imagined or genuinely dangerous. A skull-faced figure from his nightmares appears on the attraction’s mural, news of John Louis Barker’s escape spreads through the crowd and every prop becomes possible evidence. Inside the maze, wide-angle close-ups and distorted point-of-view shots turn Warren’s paranoia into the film’s visual language as he struggles to separate costumed employees from a real threat.
Henrique and David trace a remarkable final act through rubber snakes, chopped-off limbs, a rooftop fall into pumpkins and a shotgun blast that seems to confirm Warren’s fears. The reversal is cruel and funny: Barker is found peacefully picking flowers, while Warren has attacked haunt workers and killed the sheriff by mistake. That ending elevates the loose Halloween hangout into a story about panic creating the catastrophe it expects.
Production discussion covers Erickson’s low-budget Austin shoot, an eighteen-day schedule and a haunted-house interior assembled one room at a time on a makeshift stage. The American Genre Film Archive later rescued a movie that had never secured conventional U.S. distribution. The hosts celebrate Hawkes’s pre-Hollywood performance, the local cast and crew, and a time-capsule view of community spook houses before polished corporate attractions became the norm.
Both hosts call Scary Movie a rent-it, with an enthusiastic buy-it recommendation for adventurous collectors. Their original episode texture remains intact: a contemporaneous review of Terrifier 3, stories about serious eye infections and contact-lens mistakes, and memories of discovering a film that became an October staple. They recommend Scare Zone, Hell Fest and Haunt for more movies where Halloween attractions blur the boundary between performance and real danger.

0:00 It's a quiet Halloween night for just a few dollars, this place offers more than a few thrills. This year, we're gonna give more and the money's worth. Are you gonna get a ticket? Are you gonna get a ticket? Psycho Killer escapes on Halloween Night? Yeah? Right, sure, I must have taken a wrong turn, or there you took a wrong turn?
0:43 Or in a world where podcasts reign supreme, two friends dare to ask. Do You Even? Movie? Hosted by filmmaker Enrique Kuto and movie aficionado David de Noyer.
1:31 Spoiler alert, Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Do You Even? Movie? I'm, of course your host, Enrique Kuto, and this is another October edition, yes, where we're doing a little crossover, a little ninety sitcom Magic but with Weekly Spooky, my other podcast, and do You Even Movie? We're gonna be talking about a Halloween horror film you may not have heard of, and it's a shame. And of course I am here with my good buddy and co host double the David Denie readings. And I like that you've given up on correcting your name. I'm saying it Frenchish. Well, like I this is a not a spoiler.
2:19 But I recorded with our good buddy Birdman this week for a Halloween podcast for David Gordon Green Trilogy, and I called myself David Loomis. Denoyer Loomis, except that's Louis. Well, it's Loomis now. Oh okay, Well, I mean it's not better. I did never say it was. Nothing gets better from there. But tonight we are going to be talking all about nineteen ninety one's forgotten gem of regional filmmaking. Yeah, a little movie from nineteen ninety one. I say the year over and over specifically because this title is much more famous later in movie. Yes, and if you have not watched Scary Movie, we recommended last week that you check it out over on tub completely free.
3:09 It's also on Plex and screen box, so but if you want to watch it, no cost to you at all, check it out on Tube. Just make sure you type in Scary Movie nineteen ninety one. Yeah, so you find the correct one. But before we jump head first into the Halloween hijinks that are Scary Movie nineteen ninety one, Dave and I just got back from the preview night show, the first show in our area of Ohio, of Terrifier three. Yes, we did, which was a Christmas was a Chris movie, So it felt a little weird. It did watching it in the Halloween season, But I totally understand why they would want to roll it out in theaters during a time when people are all about going to see horror films. Absolutely, anyway, but we literally just got out of there. I mean, I'm still tasting the burps from the popcorn I ate at the cinema. Yes, and I would say this was a very.
4:14 What's the word. I mean, it depends what you're saying. People were very excited about it. It was very anticipated. It was highly anticipated. Yeah, and I mean what more is there to say? Yeah, I mean it's we. You and I both saw the second one in theaters, Yes, in twenty brought the first one over to you because I got it from Bloody Disgusting. When they released the Blu ray of it. We watched it. I know you weren't a big fan of it. I had seen it before, Oh you had, Yeah, I didn't know that that's the one with the cutting in half, right, Yeah, yeah, i'd seen it before. I didn't know that because i'd brought it when like it had just come out. Uh. I man, if I saw it with you first, then I just I mean, and it could be that I'm also getting myself mixed up because of all hallows Eve.
5:00 But I could have sworn that I saw it right when it first came out. I mean, all, hello, Zeve doesn't have the cutting in half, but it does have it does have a lot of debauchery. Yeah, yeah, it's where Art the Clown was coming from. Yeah, first revealed to the world, But yeah, I remember you weren't a big fan of the first one. The second one we went to go see in theaters solely because we could go see it in theaters, and also I was curious because the trailers looked really good, and I think we were both kind of the same feeling on the second one, to where it was like it wasn't a bad movie, but for two and a half hours, not a lot happened. Two and a half hours was a big ask for a movie like that. Yeah, and my opinion of Terrifier one, I wasn't a huge fan, but that's in part because I couldn't see it in the way that I think is worth seeing a Terrifier movie. Also fair because when I went to see Terrifier two. It was the same concept.
5:53 I do believe if you love independent movies, if you love horror films, you should make an effort to watch releases of those things, even if you're not certain they're for you. You should go and support and a theatrical experience, in my humble opinion, is better and different than just sitting at home watching it. So when it comes to something that's relatively mindless in many ways, although each sequel is less mindless than the last, which, thank goodness, in a good way too. I mean, if if Terrifier had been a one off, I think leaving it as open as it was was fine. Yeah, absolutely, But once you're into your second sequel, you gotta come up with something else to do, because that's not just violence. Well, and for me, the violence becomes noise figuratively and literally. The sound mix was very loud, yeah, well in the theater too, yeah, but the gushy gore noises were very high at this and that was kind of my thought. So when we saw Terrifier too. My favorite part was going to see it in the theater in October and I was talking to a buddy of mine, a week ago about this, because he was not a huge Terrifier fan, just kind of feels like it's a bit mainstream as far as the underground mainstream or whatever they call it. And I said, well, sure, I mean it's the most popular. But what it does,
7:23 what it brings to the table is that experience of seeing a ridiculous, gross out, good time horror movie in the theater. In the theater, yeah, ideally with a bunch of strangers. Yes. And when we saw that first Terrifier. When we saw Terrifier too, we went on the event day, not when it had been extended to release. No, we went the first day that it was available. Yeah. So we saw it with like maybe ten other people. Yeah, I was gonna say like six to seven maybe in the in the theater. And but this time around, you know it's going it's a full rollout of some maybe thousand screens. We saw it with easily forty or fifty other people. Yeah, and this is in a theater with recliners, so that's nearly full. Yeah. I mean it was like there was only the front row was empty.
8:09 Well, it seemed like everybody that we saw, for the most part, had a Terrifier merch shirt or something along. Day, you know, I meaneah, yeah, and for the most part skewed older, except for the few young people who were mostly there to be really grossed out. Yeah, And I thought that. I felt like Terrifier two's biggest drawback for me personally was the running time. Yeah, way too long and you don't get enough for sitting through it. And I've always but there are a lot of movies that fall victim to that, with much bigger budgets and with much more and of an acumen for taste. So Terrifiers in good company. Terrifire two is in good company with many films that out wore out there, welcome and didn't really give me any thing at the end. I'm looking at you. What was that The Green Knight? Oh yeah, the Green Knight. Goddamn that movie anyway, Uh, just too much for no payoff. Cool, but my god, it's cool to look at. Yeah, but you know, in my in my experience with with women, cool to look at is simply not enough to get you through three hours. So so Dave is shaking his head, Yes, I am so.
9:27 I thought that Terrifier too. I could tell they were trying. They introduced a real main character and didn't just slaughter her, no, and they started to build a little bit of a plot, but I was kind of frustrated, or not a plot but an arc lore. Yeah, that's a good word for it. But then I was very frustrated because when it ended, we got like none of it. No, it like really didn't finish. And then of course we got the post credit sequence, which just was another gore scene to make us ready for the next thing. For those who aren't aware, Terrifier to you and spoilers with Sienna, the character that follows us into three cutting off Art the Clown's head, and then Art the Clown's head is reborn again via Vicky Vicky Yah, who is the woman that is attacked by Art in the first Terrifier, right, and she's the mangled person that you've seen probably on the trailers or any of the pictures.
10:21 That's her. So she gives birth to Art's head and that was basically the end of Terrifier too. Yeah, yeah, basically, yeah, And that was kind of one of my complaints, is that you got kind of non endings. Yeah, And I know though in slasher movie history, it's very common to leave that one opening. Absolutely, But I feel like in the early days, the heydays of slasher movies, they were really good about making it like it could be over though. M m. You know, you'd have that little hint that maybe Freddie'll come back or maybe Jason's coming back. Yeah, but you also got that closure of like he's been defeated. Yeah, And that's something I felt like the Terrifier movies were missing very much. No, I would agree with that.
11:01 I think my biggest issue with two was, first off, the finale took like thirty five minutes. It was long, yeah, and it was just basically a lot of violence to the two main characters that we had at that point, and they just kept getting more and more and fighting back on art and then getting more violence towards them. So it was just kind of like it got boring. I was simply saying, it got boring. It a lot too much of anything kind of just becomes noise. You just get you get fatigued from it. And with that all being said, Terrifier three for me is my favorite of the series. Absolutely. It had the most characters that were worth a damn. In fact, one of my friends was commenting when we were driving back from the theater, was commenting on my phone saying that they weren't expecting it to be so mean, and I was My first thought was, I didn't think it could get meaner, and then I realized he meant because we actually knew the character, some of the characters that were dying, Yeah, and that made it way work.
11:52 It felt like a game of throat, like the Game of Thrones of horror, basically because you can't get attached to anybody in these movies because basically, for the most part, anybody's expendable. See I would say that Game of Thrones is like a slasher of fantasy. Do You Even? Movie? Will be right back, welcome back to do You Even? Movie. When we get to the finale of three, I was just like, I was like, shit, where is this going? Because at this point, like when they when they start not gonna give too much a way, but when they start with that home invasion, I'm just like, Okay, well then ship, we're here now.
12:38 I mean, I mean, it's not a spoiler to say that in the third act the main character confronts the villain. The villain yeah, I mean, because yeah, what kind of movie would you have. I mean, there's really not any big spoilers you can get for Terrified three if you already know this series. Not really, but I will say and I and this is all I'll say. Possibly one of the most Catholic horror film I've seen without literally having the Pope in it. And I'm not joking. I am positive that that under well, And that's the thing that was I noticed it eventually it's Christmas. It's a Christmas movie. Yeah, so there's a lot of religious iconography, especially toward the end. But even before they were going like ham fisted on religious iconography, I was just sitting there going like, man, this is Catholic, Like this is very Catholic. Catholic. And there was one part where a character finally revealed a motivation, which is huge in the Terrifier movies motivation. And when I heard the motivation, my first thought was that sounds like the Book of Job. You did say that, yeah, I literally think of here was like, what is this a Book of Job? So that being said, Terrifier three, in my estimation, extremely catholic, and I'm here for it. Yeah. It was my top And and that's saying a lot because this is not really my kind of horror.
14:02 It is necessarily not really in your wheelhouse, I would say, because I mean you you and you don't mind gore as long as it doesn't take away from a story in a sense, I will I'll. Ever remember his story. I'm never gonna remember the wicked gore effects and stuff because to me this sounds so crappy. But like, to me, great special effects just shows that you have time and money. It doesn't really show now. Granted, you know, like the first two Terrifier movies did not have a lot of money. They had but they had a talented person who spent a lot of time, Damian Leone, who does the effects and directed the films and wrote them. It showed showcased how well he could do. But at the end of the day, all I'm thinking is like, Wow, that must have taken a lot of time and effort and money coming up with a story that's memorable. You can spend zero dollars and do it great, and you can spend two million dollars and do a really shitty job.
14:55 And I mean just getting the script written two million dollars, not Terrifier three. Two million dollars total totally. Yeah. So all I'm saying is I feel like Damian Leone, whether he discovered it while writing three or he started plotting it in two. I think he started plotting it in too, because I don't know if you remember, but we had that bonus thing that was after Terrifier Too when we went to see it on that opening day, and he even started his interview with yeah, like, you know, I wanted to do more with the story and blitic because they were asking, like, you know, how to go with the concept of Terrifier too, And we even looked like leaned over to each other and we're just like, you had two and a half hours and you didn't further. No, he said three was gonna be where we really understand the story. I was like, you just we just gave you two and a half hours. Yeah. But that being said, I think that what Damian Leone and his people have crafted, yeah, is a really awesome piece of of horror media, and I think a lot of people are really connecting with it. I am just glad I got to go see it in the theater experience it like a real movie because it's his real movie. Yeah, And I you know, I'll be same thing. I'll be opening night for Terrifier four. Yeah, bring it on. So it's it's my thought, insanely gory. Uh.
16:07 They somehow upped the gore and the cruelness of two, which I didn't think was possible. I didn't think that they out did too. You don't think they did. I don't think they I mean not really to just dragged dragged on the violence so long. The spoiler alert. They opened with fucking murdering a family, like, kill. Everybody all the time. I want to put a call out to Damien Leoh Jesus, nut up and kill some cats and dogs. That's what needs to happen. Art the Clown needs to just snap a cat's neck he killed on camera. Yeah, he killed some rats. He's just snap a cat's neck on camera. Scroove that you've got the kahness. I honestly, he might have already killed something in the Terrifier one.
16:48 To be honest, feel like people would never shut up about it. I don't know if Art the Clown killed a dogger came back. To what I was saying. The cameos are awesome. They're they're they're they're pretty much you like used, not just they're utilized. Well, yeah, they're not constant. It's not constant. I mean, there was some great cameos in it, there's some great kills in it. There's a really surprising terrifier Christmas song in it that I. Did not expel. I was so happy. That was pretty great. So but yeah, overall, I would I get think. I gave it a three and a half on Letterbox out of five. I think it is probably the best of them so far as far as furthering the story, giving you characters that you really care about, and then also setting up the fourth movie spoilers, which.
17:30 Means I think it's already been announced. Yeah, I just double checked. Art the Clown throws the dead possum at someone in part two, Part two, okay, and then in part three kills one rat. Oh yeah, because the possum the kid finds and in all way, I forgot about that. Yeah, so he has not killed animals. And then the first Reddit post is would art the Clown kill an animal? Yes, yes you would. I was surprised though, too, that the little girl wasn't in it at all. Well, she's probably not a little girl anymore. Well, that might be A. I mean, to be frank, I don't really remember what happened with her character. I mean, she was just another thing that he saw when he first opened the movie. She was at the laundrom I remember that. I just don't remember where what happened.
18:13 She disappeared basically at the towards the end of the third act. Okay, that's what I remember, So that makes sense. Yeah. So yeah, So all that to say, we've spent almost twenty minutes talking about it. I enjoyed Terrifier three and and to quote Abraham Lincoln, oh god, it's the kind of thing you'd like if you like that kind of thing, fair enough, And I really that is sometimes when I tell people that, yeah, because I use that for a lot of things where it's hard to explain why you would like it, especially like like I love Italian cannibal movies, and I often have to say they're the kind of thing you like, if you like that kind of thing. I've had people say like, well, that's kind of dismissed it.
18:53 I'm like, no, it's not. My point is that some people like this type of thing. Yeah, so if you like that type of thing, you're gonna like this so you know, if you like Terrifier one, you like Terrifier two, you like really splattery hornby strong stomach. Eh, I mean maybe I'm I'm but I'm completely dead inside. I mean I never got nauseous or anything like that. The I did, but that was because I ate too many milk done. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah. The only thing was like the shower scene, I was just there was when he did that. I think it was the vertical cut along his ass. I was just like Jesus Christ's art. Yeah, no, it got it got nasty well. And that's the other thing. And why I'm glad that there was a lean into the story is you he'll never be able to top each movie again and again and again.
19:42 It literally can't be done. Yeah, and especially when you consider that from the beginning Terrifier was already knocking on taboos. Honestly, Damian leone and Terrifier four, he should. He should literally burn down an entire veterinary hospital. He could. I'm just saying good if you want art to stay on the cutting edge of evil. Uh. He does give domestic terrorism for Christmas, as you said, Yeah, yeah, no spoiler, but there's a moment where art does something evil shock and I literally just lean he went to art the clown is a domestic terrorist. Now, was not seeing that coming. And I liked that. I love that a couple of the weapons you choices you really weren't expecting. Yeah, that's good stuff.
20:29 He he didn't go into his bag a lot. I mean he only pulled out like a couple of things. Well they're actually weren't that many kills, No, I mean there were, they were always they were stacked quite a bit. Yeah, but but it was much more focused on on getting across why we should care about the people on absolute, which I've always appreciated. So anything else you want to say about. It, go see it if you can't, if you if you can, go see it, Yeah, definitely won't. You won't be sorry missed this in theaters. You won't. You will sure we go. Wow. For a second, I thought David just completely turned. I was like, well, that's brutal. But yeah, So check out Terrifier three in your local theater this Halloween season if you get a chance. Yes again, kind of thing you like, if you like that kind of thing. So now we're gonna talk all about scary movie nineteen ninety one, a film that I brought to you will get there, but yes you did so well. You see, usually Dave's on was like, bro, I found this, like this thing, let's watch a belch.
21:25 I think I kind of fucked myself though, because I did. I did say the truth to you, which is just like, this is a movie that I can be a picky little bitch sometimes. I mean I think that's a little harsh. I would just say a snobby ass, but. Yeah, either way, I could be a snobby, picky little bitch sometimes. And this was this is a title that you can get through AGFA. I think the Blue ray is still readily available as well. The American Genre Film Archive. Yeah, and I had Satan's Little not Satan's Little Helper, Satan's Children from them and a couple others, but I had never really looked at the library. And also I'd seen this before, but it just the cover didn't really grab me. And then it was one that you suggested that we watch it. Then now I think it's become an October stable for us.
22:08 It did. I snapped it up because I loved the look of it. Yeah, So the thing about the American Genre Film Archive and it's worth talking about for a second because they're the ones who resurrected this film. Yeah, from almost total obscurity. It had never had ever and we'll get to detail later. But it never had an official American North American release. It was released in a few foreign territories and screened around Texas and sold on DVD around Texas. The American Genre Film Archive is a group of film enthusiasts who promise when they screened movies and when they released them on Blu ray and DVD, they promised to only release films that no one cares about me. Yeah, and I'm not being diminishing. I love their releases because if you grab an AGFA title, you know it's going to be some thing interesting that you would not have found otherwise. I love that differentiator. We're not like Severin or vinegar syndrome, where we take something that some people love because we want it out there. No, we find something that, literally why would anybody ns Obscurity never got released excessively. Yeah, they constantly put out stuff like that, and I love it, and other labels dabble in doing that. Arrow has done it, a few other people have done it, but AGFA. That's all they do.
23:30 That's their bread and butter. They grab stuff and when you buy it, you know you probably if you've seen it, it's a shock. So I love what they did with Scary Movie. They gave it a beautiful blu ray. But you can of course watch it for free on tube. So Dave, you want to jump into the poignant and pertinent deets. Pertinent deets, we are talking about Scary Movie from nineteen ninety one. One hour in twenty two minutes of this film is not rated. If it had a rating, you think it would be like a PG threeteen or you think it would be an R. Oh, it would be an R. Yeah there's an violence. Yeah, yeah, that's fair. Do You Even Movie will be right back, Welcome back to Do You Even Movie.
24:21 Our director and writer on the film is Daniel Rickson. He gets his start as a writer, rector and producer on Mister Pumpkin in nineteen eighty six was a short film he did which is included on the blue ray, and we watched it tonight. It was really fun. It was fun that he does Scary Movie in ninety one, and then Eve's Necklace in twenty ten and that is all his resume includes. Yeah, he has not done a ton he has not, but what a debut feature. Hell yeah. A writer on. One of the writers on the film is David Lane Smith. He writes Scary Movie in ninety one and does the visual effects for Eve's Necklace in twenty ten. We also have Mark Vogues who is a writer on the film as well. He's an actor though, starting in nineteen eighty six with Redheaded Stranger Rap, Scary Movie in ninety one, Seduction in Travis County Without Warning, the James Brady Story in ninety one. Hard promises a perfect world North and South Walker, Texas Ranger where the heart is in the life of David Gale. So he got a little bit of acting in there from basically the mid eighties up until the early two thousands, quite a bit.
25:17 Yeah. Our cinematographer on the film is I Even Bigley. He gets start as a DP on Mister Pumpkin in eighty six. Which makes sense because that was a very good looking short film. Yeah, Scary Movie in ninety one, follows it up with Mohammed's Radio in ninety six. Burying Lana, No, I've not burying Lana in ninety seven. I know the song of course riff Raff in two thousand and five. And he also is the sound apartment on a film called nineteen eighteen eighty five May eighteen, nineteen eighteen and eighty five. But then he does the sound department for a little film in eighty five called Confessions of a Serial Killer. One of my favorites and a Texas made feature film. And it may or may not be a future episode.
25:57 I mean talking man, just maggoty with ones I brought to you. Yeah, basically, well, no, no, you didn't bring that to me. I've seen it. I saw that before you introduced it to me. Yeah, but did you really? Yes, a DVD. Sometimes, David, you appreciate things more when I shoved them into your heath. We were both excited when you showed me the directors could have been released. Oh yeah, because we because we just were like, what the fuck? Yeah, they just got dropped. But I just remember you quoting the last line of the movie ad nauseum after we watched it together, which makes me think that that was the first time you like really got it. And I mean that, I mean that it was it was God damn out. I can't remember, like it probably was college. If not, I had just moved back to Troy when I watched it.
26:43 Sure, And I mean, all I'm saying is that when I first watched it, it really stuck. And there's plenty of things that didn't stick with me the first time or second time I watched it. That's all I'm saying. I'm just saying, like, I felt like you really understood my level of enthusiasm. Having it on a one hundred and twenty in screen doesn't hurt either. Well no, no, not at all. But I mean I watched it on a really ugly VHS. Yeah, that's fair, fair enough, so the Aurora Counter also in eighty six. He does a sound apartment on Shadows of the Wall in eighty six, and then he's also an editor in the Return of Josie Wills in eighty and then in nineteen eighty two's Mongrel, written and directed by Robert A. Burns. Wowm hmm. Was Mongrel a feature? Yeah? How have I shot aten seen it? Yeah?
27:26 It's his, it's his right, it's his directorial and he wrote and he wrote it. So Robert A. Burns, Mmm, I'm gonna save talking a lot about him, Yeah, because I had the very great fortune of meeting him before his passing. But Robert A. Burns was a famous in the lands land of horror production designer. He not only did Texas Chainsaw Massacre, he not only did The Hills Have Eyes. He also did Reanimator, among many others. But those three truly quintessentially great horror films had his thumb print right on them. Yeah, and he did a lot of other stuff. But we will dive deep into him on a future episode when we dive into Confessions of a Serial Killer. Yes.
28:09 So the tagline, which is something I'm gonna start including. I'm gona start including the taglines because I think the taglines can be fun. I mean I like taglines. The tagline and the only tagline for this film, fear is a state of mind. I mean that is a good tagline to the movie. It's a little heady. You have to know what, It makes more sense when you've seen the film. Yeah. Snopsis says a paranoid teenage nerd comes to believe that an escape lunatic maybe hiding in the neighborhood Halloween House of Horrors, and slowly starts to descend into madness. I hate that. I hate that synopsis. It gives away too much. Mine my synopsis, A nerdy teen slips into paranoia that the local spook house may be hiding the place for an escape lunatic on Halloween night.
28:49 I hate yours too, Why because you're putting the doubt in and that's giving the audience who's reading that too much of an insight. That's fair a nerdy guy. I'm just off the time a nerdy guy ends up at a spook house when he finds out there's an escaped lunatic nearby. Something like that. A little bit more ambiguous. You'll find out why, kids, I'm I'm just it just has those little wording bits. Yeah. No, I feel that that I don't love because I want the audience to be as fooled as I was. I mean, we can restart the episode again. Now I've given away too much problem, We're good. I'll just I'm just gonna digitally remove you as AI move it into our cast.
29:31 I will go ahead and say, with this episode, with this movie being what it is, we have one major cast member that that actually went to do stuff. I do have some listing for another one, but John Hawks. He didn't just go to do stuff. He went on to Academy Award nominated Nomini. Yeah yeah, John Hawks, who plays Worn in the film one hundred and forty two credits on his resume, a lot of credits. He gets his start in Police Academy in nineteen eighty four. He is uncredited, though, so technically he gets a start in eighty five with Future Kill Shoot. I think I have a copy of Future. I think it's I think it's on your server. Yeah, I'm almost certain I do. Then he appears in the Doa remake in nineteen eighty eight, Johnny be Good in eighty eight, Murder Wrap in eighty eight, Heartbreak Hotel in eighty eight, Dakota in eighty eight, Rosalie Goes Shopping eighty nine. Then he does Scary Movie in ninety one, follows up A Sweet Poison in ninety one, Man in the Machine Nails in ninety two, Northern Exposure, Freaked in ninety three.

I did find it, I just can't. I just didn't write down the character. Unfortunately. Course, well you found out and then forgot. Yeah, bro, which is as good as not finding out. Lock yourself. Uh, this is this is my hell. Oh stop all right, freaked. Oh you're so bad at internet. I'm bad at internet. Yeah, I think it's my computer. Don't you just use the find button? Won't you shut up? And then you could just type in freaked and it weld go right to it. Cowboy Cowboy in ninety three. Oh, so he was under a lot of makeup Louse Cowboy. Yeah, that's so funny. So he does Freaked in ninety three.
31:10 Then he goes on to do Adventures of Briscoe County Junior in ninety three, Flesh and Bone Wings, Dead Air in ninety four, Congo, Night of the Scarecrow in ninety. Five Night of the Scarecrow with Jeff burd That is correct. Shit, I need to reward. I need to rewatch that anyway from us. Still Dawn in ninety six, Dangerous Minds TV show in ninety six, Millennium, The Big Easy TV series, Steel Pacific Blue Nash bridges Er playing God boogie Boy Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Rush Hour in ninety eight, Home Fries, I Still Know What You did last summer, Brimstone, The Crow Stairway to Heaven, which is the TV series Martial Law X Files, Blue Streak, The Practice, Perfect Storm in two thousand, Hardball Identity, Deadwood, Risk Cutters A Love Story, Miamivice, American Gangster S Darko, Winners Bone in twenty ten, Eves Necklace in twenty ten, Contagion Lincoln Life of Crime, Small Down Crime in twenty seventeen.
32:01 It's a damn good film, damn good movie. Three Billboards Outside Evans, Missourians twenty seventeen, Peanut Butterfalcon twenty nineteen, and most recently was on True Detective in twenty twenty. Four see I I. He first got on my radar on Deadwood, Oh yeah, absolutely, and then again when he was the brother on Eastbound and Down. And famously, of course, is the liquor store owner at the beginning of From Us Till Dawn that gets lit the fuck. Up, yeah, literally, and then figured it figuratively and then literally yeah. Yeah. We also have Susanne Aldrich, who plays Barbara Scary movie is the only thing on her credit in ninety one. Then we have ev Leunning, who plays Sheriff Pat Briggs. He is gets his start in nineteen ninety with Naughtia The Secret of Blue Water Scary Movie in ninety one, Nadya The the Motion Picture in ninety one, Texas Justice, Cyber Mag's Dark Dark Light Awakening in ninety five, Red Boys, Sweet Things, Eden's Bowery Ultimate X Ascension Get Backers, DC Universe Online, and most recently, even though it's not out and we don't know if we're ever gonna see it, Toxic Avenger three.
33:00 Oh shit, Okay, so the sheriff makes it appearance in that film. Fair enough, And as Rique mentioned, we do have the film currently available on Plex screen box and two B or you can rent it or buy it onto a voodoo I know, as well as well as get the Blu ray from. AGVA and and it is definitely worth getting. Absolutely I realized we don't have what John Hawks got nominated for an Academy Award for. Oh yeah, I guess we don't. Yeah, that would have been good to know. I mean, I'm trying to this guy. This is what I get for letting Dave do things. I'm looking good. Good. The dead air is is all. You're like, it's fine, you'll edit it.
33:49 Best Supporting Actor. Oh it doesn't say. What nominated nominated for one oscar and it was for fucking laptop taking some slip Winters Boe Winter's Bone Okay, yeah, I thought it was Winterersbone. I couldn't remember. Have you seen Winters Bone? No, it's really good. It's one of Jennifer Lawrence's like first big roles. Huh yeah, I haven't had a chance. Yeah, twenty eleven. So we've already talked about it a little bit. But the first time that we saw this, you had bought the blue ray. We popped it, and we had no idea really what to expect. You had told me that it was shot in Austin and that it was basically a lost film until they'd found it. And then what we discovered was that this is like a perfect Halloween hangout film. Yeah. What happened was I had been exposed to the film, I think because it took place on Halloween. Yeah, because that's a major thing I'm obsessed with, is finding films that take place on holidays. How we watched hackle Lingter that one year yeah, and how I liked it a lot more a second time. Yeah, especially with Joe Bob hosting it. Yeah, that helped a lot. So that really pulled me in right away. Yeah, because I was like, oh, cool, you know, this is on Halloween and it's AGFA, and I love what AGFA does and it's you know, kind of a lost So then yeah, we put it on and I didn't realize how bizarrely well it captures kind of this Halloween mindset, especially the halloweens of what I call the better time before you were born. Yeah that's fair,
35:19 but well I'm just old enough, just old enough to remember Halloween in eighty nine, ninety ninety one, and they were pretty damn awesome. Yeah. So, I mean, I'm not one of those people that thinks that Halloween is dying out. My neighborhood every year has more trick or treaters. We've really had a lot of luck there, although fourteen years ago we had almost none. So reproduce you fucking idiots out there, reproduce. Do You Even movie? Will be right back, welcome back to Do You Even?
36:03 Movie. I love Halloween obviously, and I felt like this film captured an essence of Halloween in a really unusual way because it's not a gore fest, it's not a scare fest. This is going to make it sound less fun than it is. It exists in this really interesting world where it's Halloween night in some podunk area of Texas. Yeah, and you're waiting in line to get into a family run spook house spokehouse. Yeah. Yeah, And I mean that's I think that's what was most fun about it was. I mean, did you ever go to a spook house, you mean, like the ran like on a ball, like ran by a family and whatnot, like like the the lower tier ones that are no longer in existence.
36:54 No, not really, but that's not really a thing in the city. No, Because I'm the only thing that I have with that is I went to j C's. I was in I was outside of j C's the last year before it was done. I thought, uh oh, because the isn't there something other Jc's runs. A Jc's haunted House is the one I'm referring to, and that one, I think is that. I mean, that's the gong gone. I mean, I've been to the things that I would end up going to as a kid were haunted hay rides a common Yeah, to be like run by families and stuff. And they scared the everlove and shit out of me by the way Haunted hay rides. I honestly, I mean not that I've been invited to one but recently, but I uh I, I don't seek them out. That's fair creep to me out.
37:38 Well, I know what I'm doing in a week. Oh boy, So you're ready to get into the movie. Sure, all right? So we open with shot of lightning flashing through a window as we hear a storm outside. Plus we hear a clock ticking, and that's when we meet Warren, who's clearly having a nightmare because we see it as we go into his dream and he is being chased by a figure in a skull mask with a scythe. Yes, and that imagery will come two again. Yes. So he wakes up and we see him look over at his pet fish and next we see that they are outside of a haunt. As we see the crew getting ready for Halloween night, we see a sheriff car pull up as we meet Sheriff Pat Briggs who's stopping by the Haunt to pass out posters for his re election. Yeah, he is about as politician, he as a sheriff can get Yeah.
38:21 And we also see that there is a sign hung above the haunt that says, abandon all, abandoned, hope all all y'all he, Oh my. God, abandon all, hope y'all, who end, y'all? Who enter? Yeah, y'all, who interfere? Thank you, which is very charming, very charming in very Texas. And then we also push forward into the night and it is right outside the haunt we see a van driving down the road and inside the van we see that a man is in a straight jacket and this is going to be John Lewis Barker. Yes, and he is a mental patient that is being transferred right now. But we'll get back to him in just a little bit, because now we are outside the Haunt and we see Warren and his friend Brad. Yes, and his and I would say friend is is air quotes worthy? Air quotes his friend. Yeah.
39:08 I would also like to add I did forget I did forget to mention this, but this movie has a barcode with its title. I did did he mention why in the commentary he has not yet? I mean, I, like I said, I with the time, he would have probably said something was at the beginning beginning, Yeah, yeah, I do have fun trivia the idea why there's a bar code under the title so weird. It is weird. So Brad, Brad and Warren are hanging out and Warren begs Brad for them to leave, but Brad reminds him, Hey, man, haunted House are a chess fest and girls get scared and they won't want to hang all over you, so we're staying. There are a lot of little in this film. Chest Fest is one of them. I've never heard that outside of this film. I assume it's referring to women's breasts.
39:53 I would think so, yes, But there's later where he calls, like where one of the farmers calls a kid like a fart bitches, Yeah, which I like immediate. I was like, all right, the director's like Grandpa must have said that to him or something, because that's damn good. But yeah, yeah, chest Fast just quite a choice. But it fits his character perfectly because it's worth mentioning. He's almost everybody's in a Halloween costume yep, except for our main character yep, and his best friend in air quotes is dressed as just a beach guy, just a beach He's got a whole shirt on, he's got the ley, he's got the coconut drink, and he's got the zinc oxide on his nose. So it makes him even more charming.
40:33 It does, indeed, because we also then see that he has two friends joining him, but the first one is Shelley, which is his girl. So we see a wide shot of the ground as they pan off to go find Shelley, and in line we see multiple teams dressing costume, laughing, enjoying themselves, and Brad finds Shelley and the two share a kiss. After he startles her, he goes up and just spooks her. A little bit. Well, it's Halloween knight. It is Halloween night. Everyone's entitled to a good scare, good spook, do a good spook, to a good spoop spoop, so he startles her. They share a kiss. Then Warren stands at the side with the coconut drink that Brad had, still looking nervous, and that's when Brad introduces Warren to Shelley, and Shelley also introduces Warren to Barbara. As we see a woman walking over in slow mocean mind you.
41:15 Oh of course, I mean how do you, David, how would you introduce a beautiful woman dresses a virgin goddess? Yeah? And just what would you? Just speed it up? Part sounds in it? God, you're so tactless. I do love when she gets up to him. She's like right up on him, and she's like, oh, sorry, I don't have my glasses, which. Again, sorry, I forgot my glasses as a kid. How long have you been you're near sighted? Oh? Yeah, second grade is when I got my glass. Second grade. Yeah, and I don't think you have quite as bad vision as me, but it's got to be close. It's not great. But yeah, yeah, I've really like I like sometimes I go to buy a frames and I just get no because my lenses are so heavy. And I had an eye infection which dropped one of my eyes almost a whole point sharing it, Well, I almost went blind. That's a whole other conversation. Well you almost went blind from touching it. No, I almost went blind because I left my contacts in for like three straight days. Ah, that's the You ever hear that story.
42:14 About that the college student that got the amiba on her eye? Yes, Yeah. My eye doctor told me that story the day he gave me my purse first pair of contact lenses. Yeah. I used to when I was a teen because I was blind as a bat very young. And when I was a teen, I loved contact lenses. Yeah, which is funny because now glasses are such a major part of how I accessorized accessorized. But when I got contacts, I was way into them. The ACUVI two's that just come out, and they were very They didn't you didn't feel them in your eyes as much. They were just really great. It was a good It was a really good time to get contact lenses because I remember when I put in the ACUV twos. My mom was like, how do they feel. I was like, they feel great, and she was like, I remember when mine were made of glass, and I was like, I thought she was joking. So my point is I loved wearing them, loved wearing them.
43:11 And then when I was I think it was fourteen fourteen into fifteen, the infection lasted a very I fought it for six months straight. Jesus, when I got an infection in my eye. I maybe someday I'll go into it, but I'm not going to go into it today. But I got an infection in my eye and I had to wear an eyepatch over my eye. I had to apply ointment every night before I went to sleep. Six month into my it was seven and a half if I'm remembering corectly. I had to take a literal handful of pills every morning and every night before at dinner time, and they were anti viral medication. I had to take steroids. But then the more steroids you used to reduce inflammation, the more your your ability to fight infection drops, so more anti virals. So the piled just kept getting higher and higher. And I remember, after five months of dealing with that, my poor mother, I just mortified her. One morning she came into my bedroom with some eggs and a cup of orange juice and some toast. It's like a school day, and she was like, I made you this, you know, And she watched me take this friggin' fist and full of hills and just put them all in my mouth and just swing them down, and she was like, you're gonna choke like that. I'm like, I do it every morning, like it's just it's just the way it is.
44:27 Because and they were also like vitamins. The doctor recommended all this stuff. So anyway, I after the infection was gone, then my eye was scarred, so they had to remove the epithelial layer of skin off of my eye. I'm guessing they didn't do that to you. No, So basically I woke up one day and I was like, oh man, my eye really hurts. I'm gonna take my contacts out. Oh my god, you slept in your contacts. And I took them. Out and I was like, ah, man, like my eye won't stop tearing up. I'd cut my eyes. And I was unfortunately familiar with that because I'd done it before, but not wearing them. I had just taken my contact out roughly. And not by accident for fun. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, So I had to go to to my to an eye doctor, but it was it was a specialist at this point, so we had to go to shit, where was it? I think it was like it was like twenty minutes out of town.
45:18 Yeah. I ended up having to go optomologist is what you're thinking of? Homologist. The way my optomologists explained it was like optometrists never touch your eye. Optomologists always touch your eye. So they gave me like some because I I heals the fastest is one of. The parts of the body eyes and tongues. Yeah, eyes and tongue. So they gave me some ointment that put on it. They put an eye patch on me, like sealed an eye patch and everything, and then. They pull your eyelid down and then tape it. I had to wear it for I think it was forty eight hours, and then when I took it off, my eye was completely fine. I could see again. It's so nice. Yeah, So say similar thing, except instead of having a cut in my eye, they removed all of the skin from my eye, so my eye was one big cut. And then I had to have my eyelid taped down for five days. Then I could take it off and open my eye, but every time I blinked, there was the worry that it was going to pull all the healed skin off. Yeah.
46:18 So I had to then hold my eye, which was tender and red, and put a contact lens in it to protect it, and then constantly lubricate the lens and keep that in for four days. Jes Yeah, it was very unpleasant, and my eye had become traumatized from all of it, so they had to put a plug in my tear ducts so that my eyes wouldn't lose tears as fast, so that my eyes well basically, man, okay, last thing. After it healed, they dropped the goop in my eyes that shines under a special light and found that I had erosion on my eyes. Oh my god.
46:59 And that meant that my eye was too dry. So that's when they put a plug in my tear ducks, which hurts more than it sounds like. Yeah, And that made tears unable to leave as quickly so that my eye would stay moist. And those duck drops stayed in for a year or so. They eventually just come out. They can't stay forever, and then if they come out and your eye hurts, you gotta go back. But I had to. I had special acidic drops that I had to put in for the first three weeks of treatment. I had to put them in every four hours, including during sleep, because we were the way my optimology, but he was like, we are fighting for your vision. Yeah.
47:39 So my mother god lover, and I'm like fourteen fifteen. She would wake me up every four you know, four hours eye drops in which burned like like sons of bitches and then back to sleep, and people wonder why, Like, if I'm putting Halloween makeup on, I could just rub right across my eye lid and not even react. It's just I could put it contact lenses with like by throwing him. Do you even? Movie? Will be right back? Welcome back to Do you even movie?
48:21 You want to hear something stupid that David almost did? Oh god, okay, last story. We were we were doing ghost tours one year and Katie did our Katie did her makeup for ghost Hours and did a great job on it. And she had done my skull makeup up this one year. And we were dating at this point, so we had gone back to her place and I was taking the makeup off, and I don't know why. I don't know what made me think of it. I don't know why I almost did it. But I take a cue tip, dip it in ic apropyl alcohol, because I have to get the the lines of the makeup lines under my eyes, so I'm trying to get them in makeup. Were you using that use rubbing alcohol to take it off? That's the thing is, I wasn't supposed she's rubbing alcohol because I was gonna literally put it like a Q tip, like right in my eye where you're not supposed to put rubbing alcohol.
49:05 Well, no, yeah, that's why she stopped me. I mean that's good. Yeah, usually you use like mineral oil. Makeup wipes usually or oh damn, it was the cold cream like dial like dial soap, like a bar of dial soap will usually take it off too. Well. I guess it depends, but yeah. I almost blinded myself. She stopped me, and she's like, what are you doing? And I was just like, oh, I didn't know, and she's like, read the bottle. I'm like, oh, I'm not supposed to get near your eyes. I mean you can put it in your eyes, I just don't. The thing that disturbs me about that story is that you were trying to remove makeup with alcohol. It was it was yeah, I understand, but what I'm saying is like, I've gotten horrible things in my eyes that burned. Yeah. Look, look I'm David, I'm Hispanic. I have cut every pepper known demand and then touched my nose and eyes. I remember the last the last time it happened, I was texting with Rachel and she was like, do you need me to come over? Do you need me to do something like did you wash it? And I was like no, no, no, when this happens, I just do this. And she was like this has happened before, and I was like, count yeah, so but my point is so yeah. To me, I'm just like, why would you burn your eye with alcohol for no good reason? Yeah?
50:17 I don't know. So so she walks over. Yes, yes, yes, and she introduces herself and that's when we also see that she calls him cute and states that she forgot her glasses, and Shelley introduces her to Brad and that's when we cut back to the mental patient in the transport band. We hear tire squeal as we see a cow on the road, and then we cut away and we don't know what happens, but we know what happens. Yes, and there's nothing. And I mean this with love because it was on purpose. There's nothing more easy and cliche to set up a horror story than an escaped mental mental patient. Yeah. It started in the forties and fifties with the hook guy. YEP, an urban legend. They even used it in Slumber Party Massacre one yep, you know, just Escape Metal Patient. It's it's it's so cliche that it kind of gives you a giggle. Well, I mean, hell, all through the House, the Tales of the Cript story. Yeah, it was an escape mental Patient and that was written Yeah in the forties, forties or fifties, one of the we're all good years. Yeah, they're all great decades, especially for people like me. But my point is no, yeah, so so I love that establishing, Yeah, because I think the reason they went for cliche and that was to get us to make assumptions. Yeah, you know easily, just like the character will make assumptions. Yes, anyway, I just want to mention.
51:41 So we cut back to the Haunt and Brad asked Warren for his keys, and he and Shelley make their way off because they're. Going to go make out in the car for a little bit. Gross. So Barbara tries to make conversation but is quickly distracted by many guests exiting the Haunt. As Warren has his attention drawn, and Barbara says, oh, you're you're really talking to aren't you? Because Warren's not saying any. He's not saying much, but really the true hero is the heavy set guy with the red shirt. In the background, there's just a solo guy not in a costume who whenever things get ridiculous, he's just immediately involved listening and laughing. Love that character. Yeah, anyway, and again to paint a picture for you, we're outside a haunted house. So they've got people in costume all around that are that are running the haunt.
52:25 We've got people selling vending and everything on that side, and. People selling hot dogs, popcorn, all kinds of. So, I mean, you've got a whole thing going on around him. And he's every every time this door opens and these people are now, he's always just drawn over there just to look. Yeah, because he hears them like screaming and laughing, and it makes his imagination go wild. And this is why this movie is such Halloween excelsior, because it's a goddamn film where half of it you're waiting in line. And anybody who did Haunts pre twenty ten, yeah, you waited in line a really long time. And the only saving grace was when you were with a group was it would be like, hey, you hold our place in line, we'll go get hot dogs. Hey, you hold our place online, we'll go get SODA's or whatever. That was the saving grace of being in those lines so long. Now we have the digital, the whole digital thing where which I love.
53:22 The last haunted house I went to last year. I'm hoping to go to a couple this year, but the last two I went to, or the last one I went to, I was able to check in digitally the moment I got there, get VIP tickets, and then my phone buzzed when it was time so we could wander around buying tostadas or whatever. Was that? No, no, no, this was not the one We went to a kith. Oh yeah, the one. Yeah, you were there for some reason. I thought you weren't there. Yeah, yeah, the hotel place. I remember the name of it several sometimes, so we think I got to just get mixed up. Well, it was really fun. Well, and in their defense, we had not heard of them until that night because I literally we were at the cigar Lunge and I was like, let me find a haunted house. Yes, So then we just looked until we found one that sounded fine.
54:06 That was That was so much spur of the moment. You're just like, you also go to haunted House night. That was fun. That wasn't even the plan, like it was just gonna be a normal Friday, and then you're just like, let's. Go to a honted house. It might happen again tomorrow, who knows. So we see that, or we hear her make the joke that he's very talkative. Warren comments on her costume, and Barbara states that she's a virgin goddess. She also opens her purse, revealing that when she dines at any restaurant, she normally steals something, because if you're gonna dine, why not have have the five finger discount, as she says. And she's got a salt shaker, she's got a glass like, she's got all these things inside her purse. But she hands him a twizzler and she has one for herself. Well, actually she makes him eat it. Yeah, she makes him eat it right there in front of her. Yeah, which is great because that means she's a thief and pushy. Yes, I mean, honestly marriage material.
54:52 So more people leave the Haunt, drawing his attention once again as he hears screams. Barbara takes his hand and then starts reading his palm and she comments that it's very interesting, but then she quickly gives his hand back and looks unsettled. Not only does she do that, but as she's reading his palm and becomes disturbed by what it is. Instead of like, I love the way they acted it out, she just like pushes his hand away for like back to him, like you keep them keep that that's yours. So we see a farmer driving down the road and he's stating, there you are a girl. And he gets out of his car and we see that he's the owner of the cow from earlier. But besides the cow, he looks over and walks out a little bit and he sees that the mental hospital van has completely crashed. It's on its side and there's no one in the back anymore.
55:35 No, and the windshield is smashed. Has some blood on it, and that's when he also notices that there's a body by it. He flips it over to find that the guard who was driving the car is now dead. And his face is smushed in. He did not have a good time. He did not have a good time. So we cut back to the Haunt. Barbara runs into an ex name JJ, who's trying to get Barbara to go with him into the haunt, but she says she doesn't want to go. So Warren comments, oh, I guess she doesn't want to go. And it's just kind of goofy about it, just to be friendly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, they don't take Kyli to that. No, no, no, So JJ is JJ is kind of looking at the guy, kind of staring him down a little bit, and even Barbara makes it worse because she's just like, yeah, you better watch out, JJ. He knows karate. And so then Warren fakes knowing karate for a second. JJ whips out a knife, Warren looks immediately terrified, and then JJ just starts stabbing Warren.
56:24 Yes, and these guys are typical ruffians. Yeah, And as he's stabbed, we get that shocking moment before we realize it's a goofy knife. It's a fake knife. Is it's a retractable Halloween knife type deal, which makes much more sense than just stabbing someone to death and broad daylight. And this is the part. As Enrique said, we're the guy in the red Shirt's laughing, Barbara's laughing, Brad's laughing, JJ and. His career laughing. The whole fucking Haunt is laughing at him. Oh yeah, well, I mean, come on, falling for the old You thought I murdered you? Yeah, pretty good, he thought. So Warren wanders off to the bathroom, which is hilarious because the porta potty is covered in the re election flyers that the sheriff had dropped off. They're also on the tree and everything on the Haunt too, So he did not pass them out.
57:14 No, no, not at all. And a blind man goes ahead of warn and gets into the porta pot and we also see the sheriff now has arrived at the crash site and they have found the patient's bloody straight jacket, but. No sign of him. Oh and by this point news has gotten now that John Lewis Barker is loose, and one of his deputies even informs him that they have officers coming over the county line because news of the breakout has gotten everyone's attention. You just said John Lewis Parker is on the loose, and all I could think was John Parker, Lewis sorry, It just it just pops in solid, thanks you solid. So they have cops come in over county line because this has all gotten their attention and they need to. Catch this guy, goddamn right. So Warren gets inside the porta pot fall and we follow a little boy with his dog, and we see the little boy wandering around the back of the haunt and he's sneaks in after removing a haystack into the haunt.
58:04 So he's wondering on the haunt. Warren exit's coming face to face with the sheriff, and this allows Warren to hear the sheriff's radio basically break down all the news about Barker. Yeah. So now our main character knows that there's an escaped mental patient, yeah, on the loose. So Warren here's all of this. He goes back to his group, specifically telling Brad that John Lewis Barker escaped and he just heard it over the radio. And Brad's like, oh, so it escaped, you know, metal patient on Halloween night? Yeah right, sure sounds a little too perfect. And then more people laugh at him. Yeah yeah, I mean, it's really one of the best pastimes while waiting in line is to laugh at this guy. So then Barber starts handing out cigarettes to the group, and she even puts one in Warren's mouth. And he's like, I don't smoke, and then Shelley tells him, you know, oh, well, you know, you just have to puff on it like a car exhaust.
58:52 Yeah, just puff on it, like suck on it like a car exhaust. So it's clear that he does not know how to smoke, because his first puff sends him into a coughing fit. Once again, more people, everyone laughs. And there's something about the writing and the execution of the scene because if you're a person who is gets nervous in crowds or gets nervous around new people, your absolute nightmare would be that they just force literally everything on you. Yeah, So the idea that's just like cigarette in your mouth and then and then you're like, but I don't smoke it. They're like lighting, They're like, well, smoke it anyway. It's like, would never happen. But man, if it ain't funny, that's really funny funny. And I want to point out something at this point in the movie because by this point we've basically had a pretty straightforward of cinematography and whatnot, except with the opening dream sequence.
59:39 Right. Yeah, Now, once we get to a certain point, things start getting really odd at times with Warren's POV for the most part. Yeah, we're getting a lot of extreme wide angle shots yeah, and wide angle close ups. And for those who don't know what that means, a wide angle close up is basically when you put a wide lens, a lens that shows a lot of area, yeah, on a camera, but then you get close to someone with it, and wide angle lenses aren't meant to show that. So because when things are close they distort, well, it's becomes more apparent that they distort. Yeah, So when you do a wide angle close up, it's often used to simulate the concept of confusion, fear, insanity, anything that's not normal.
1:00:21 Do you Even? Movie? Will be right back, Welcome back to do You Even? Movie? Inside the Haunt, the little Boy wanders around with the group he is watching as one of the guys of the Haunt is basically going to town on a guy with a cleaver. And then as he the little boy goes around the corner, that guy grabs him, picks him up, and he's hovering over him with a clever, and then he takes off his mask, revealing it's his father. Yeah, and he calls him a fart bridges fart bridges will fart. Briches says, he's not supposed to be in there, and then and he's take the back door out because there's more people coming and you know, he needs to get on with the Haunt. Now, question for you is this where Butch Patrick is or is he the guy that's strapped to the table with the pendulum.
1:01:11 I thought that he was strapped to the table at the beginning at the beginning, right, I think it was that scene. Okay, yeah, Butch Patrick, also known as the original Eddie Munds, pops up in this movie a little bit. Yes, he does. So the boy exits out the back, leaving the door open. As the camera pans back over to the Haunt crowd waiting outside, we get a beautiful crane shot over the top of the barn on into the crowd again and back in line. Barbara is now adjusting Warren's back as she has him like locked in her like her. Oh, they're back to back, arms crossed each other, and she's pulling him up off the ground. But the best part is she pulls him up off his feet and cracks his back and his reaction's like, ah, that felt great. Yeah, but he doesn't say it. He just in his face. He just looks so relieved and happy, and all I can think is, again, not a cell phone in sight.
1:01:58 People just living in the moment. And that's the thing that's the funniest to me is every time it comes back, they're just doing some bullshit. Yeah, because they got nothing else to do. They're waiting in line. I I'm like, that's the genius the line. It doesn't sound exciting, but it's really really fun. It's a lot of fun. So Brad suddenly puts him into a headlock once again, causing everyone to laugh. And this is the scene I'm talking about Right here, Warren starts to lose a little bit of his sanity. By the way that they're showing his POV. Well, he's getting paranoid, getting. Paranoid because there's people laughing at him that aren't laughing at him, it's just his view. So that is when Warren is clearly not pleased. We see the little boy wander around the barn, finding an open door. He runs in then gets tripped, and we also see the camera shows us that a scythe is missing in the barn.
1:02:49 Yes, and a scythe. It is indeed Scythe indeed a Scythe to meet you. So Warren gets harassed by the ticket to the guy because, as you saw in the trailer, the ticket guy goes, hey. You're gonna buy a ticket. Oh, you're gonna buy a ticket, which I mean multiple choice is the easiest to answer. So he buys his ticket. He looks at the ticket stuff to see that his number four entry is six six six. Such a nice touch, so, such a nice touch. He gets spooked also by a rattlesnake that's in a tank by the opening of the Haunt, and Barber tells him it's Halloween night, the most exciting holiday, Halloween, Creatures of the Dark Reigned Supreme with demons and monsters and more in a court is just getting more and more not.
1:03:32 Yeah, his eyes are just getting wider and wider as she's saying all this. So during this he also stares at the skeleton art on the Haunt, looking more uneasy as he looks at it because the figure on the that's painted on the Haunt is the guy from his dream. Basically, it's a skeleton with a scythe. Yeah no, and and the sides of the barn are covered in cute paintings skeletons and jack o' lanterns and witches. Yeah, but there is that figure. Yeah, and he looks extremely like the one in his nightmares. It's definitely off putting. So we see that it's Warren's time to enter the haunt. As they are summoned up by the man who's beckoning them at the front, he goes over the rule of stating how they have to remain in their group. There can only be six in a group at a time, but since they have four, they need to stick real close together.
1:04:12 Have you ever gone to a haunt with just yourself, just myself, or even just with one other person only? Yeah, I've gone with three people. Well okay, so you probably haven't had the experienced them where they just tack you onto another group. Oh no, that did happen? Okay, Yeah when I was I was with a group of twelve once and they had to break it up. So I got I think I like me and like me and one other person got separated. Oh okay, Well more so my experience when it's just me or me and one other person is they end up just putting you on to like a four person group of strangers. So I'm saying, yeah, are the the big the big group of friends went ahead, we got separated with people that we didn't know. Oh okay, yeah yeah, because a lot of these haunts, they're like, it's not worth running for only two people or what have you. So we need to get a few more people in.
1:04:58 So that is when he invited them inside, and the man also wishes them good luck before shutting the door. Now did you catch something that I caught via the commentary? No, tell me. So when he goes to open the door to the haunt, that skeleton figure is still painted on the side. When the door goes back, it's gone. Oh that's fucking great. Yeah, So there is a tidbit for you. So if you haven't seen this yet or you've already watched it, go back to that scene when when Warren enters the haunt with his friends, they slide the door open, which covers the skeleton guy. When they slide it back, he's gone, that's so cool. Yeah. I wish I would have caught that, but I caught it via the commentary. So that is when now they are inside the haunt, the man wishes them good luck, shuts the door, and inside the group wonders the halls of the house that are decorated perfectly. This is this haunt looks really really cool. I do want, I do want to state that it looks obscenely cool. Yeah, And I may have some trivia at the end about how they put it all together, because they did a really good job faking something, that's all I'll say.
1:05:57 And how would you say, based on the movie obviously, because it's not like we've been to that haunt or that that haunt even really necessarily exists, how would you compare this haunt as it's depicted to your favorite haunt of all time, mccamee Manner. Jesus, Why because why? Because you take it so. Personally, used to take it so personally. Then I saw the actual footage, and now I'm just like, oh, fuck that guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you used to have Like there was a time, this is like nine years ago where if mccamee Manner came up, which, granted, I mean rus mccamey's a total piece of shit, bad person. Uh, he's a liar and a fake and a frauds and then on top of that, he just seems like he's a pretty His personal relationships are really shitty too. But I've watched a bunch of the documentaries about it, and I think that he's mostly mostly just a liar.
1:06:50 You he'll have not watched that one that last year. The only problem I have with that documentary on Hulu about mccameye Manner is that, like some of the people who are talking that are like, I was mistreated this way and this way. But he kept telling me that, you know, if I do these things, I'll get way more views and blah blah blah blah blah. And then it's like, so what do you do for a living. It's like, I'm trying to be a streamer, I'm trying to be an influencer, and I'm like, I'm not saying that you deserve to be taken advantage of it at all. What I'm saying is that is a very that's a hard line to ride when all you want is lots of attention. That's why show business is so exploitive. Yeah, is because of that whole element. But long of the short is, yeah, you used to get so mad I did about mccamee Manor.
1:07:40 It was it was specifically the the Haunter Hunter's documentary. Yes, yes, because they showed at that time, they showed pictures of the really wild shit that was available, with like people gagged and like having stuff thrown on them, being waterboarded and. Stuff like that. Yes, yeah, yeah, no, fuck fuck fuck him fair enough. I'm pretty sure he's in jail right now anyway. I just I just had to. So Brad's screams scary in the group on purpose before calling them, whoosies, and Warren uses the opportunity to lay a kiss on Barbara, who responds by yawning and then wandering off. I remember, because when we were watching that, you were like, was that inn No? I said that, yeah, but it was very funny. Yeah, because he literally leans in with like the most tender like kind of if the light's right and stuff. It seems so romantic. And then right after the kiss he pulls back and she just opens her mouth wide, yawns and then turns away from does a thing to him, just walks. Yeah.
1:08:35 So we see Jerry with the cleaver. Jerry is the guy that owns the hawnk. Excuse me, how dare you? He's taking a break, enjoying a beer, but his buddy calls to him that another group is approaching, so we see someone return wearing the same get up that Jerry was wearing. JJ's group has reached up at this point, so it's the batties and the man starts swinging on the on the guy that's chained to the table because JJ's groups like, yeah, yeah, kill him. So then he goes to town with this cleaver. We see blood spread and by this point we don't know if. This is real or not. That's what I love about this because they set it up because he's like, it's like Jerry, like, and then he just starts swinging on him. Yes, so he starts swinging on him, kills him. The guys walk away, and then that's when they revealed that it's still Jerry under the mask and that that was all part of it.
1:09:15 So they had gore planned, but we got faked out that it may have been the killer. Well, I mean, what is this spook house if not basically a house of pranks? Yeah. Well, and that's the one thing also too, is that there's there's certain things that happen in this movie when they get into the Haunt that it's just like they fake you out a lot, Like there's the one guy that grabs on to jj in and he's like, hey, man, like let go, let go, and then the hand just lets it go and just pulls back. Oh yeah no. And that's the thing. I mean, spook houses are so rife with mystery and creepiness because I mean, how many times in your life have you been in a like had a really good Halloween costume, Not like the thirty times you were the Crow, but like the time went really you were really good one time, but the times you had a really good one, and then when your friends would say like or whatever, you would just like, for a minute, you wouldn't say anything, Yeah, you would just like hold it.
1:10:06 So oh no, one time it's not that exciting story. But one time, I know, I fuck you. One time I was doing Michael Myers, my Michael Myers costume for the Guru for the Halloween hount Downtown, and I ran into my cousin and my and my aunt, but I forgot that I had the mask, and so like I waved them like a smil and I could see my cousin, who was he was pretty young at the time, just kind of get really scared. So I immediately had to take off my mask and be like, hey, it's me, It's it's me. It's okay. So one year at horror Rama. I So I struggle every year with my Halloween costumes for the most part, because I try not to be the same thing twice, and I try to come up with something I find scary, whether it's a character or a concept.
1:10:49 You're sloss in one still, yeah, that was one of the best I've ever done. But one year, like a day a week before Halloween, I came up with it, and it was to wrap my head in bandages and put a little blood around and stuff, and wear a hospital gown and have like tubes hanging off my arms and stuff. Just escaped patient, just patient of some sort, you know, like you're thinking of the year I dressed as a crazy doctor. Oh yeah, yeah. That was on COVID because at the time we were still masking. So I wanted to work masks into my costume because handing out candy on twenty twenty was amazing in my neighborhood. But anyway, so I have this, I don't think about it. My whole head's wrapped in bandages. I don't have my glasses, I'm wearing contact lenses. I'm doing all this stuff, and I'm at horror rama around friends and I'm just like acting, you know, creepy or whatever. But I'm literally, you know, like up against friends and touching people and like getting really close. And I noticed that they're like creeped out.
1:11:46 I'm like, damn, my costume must be really good. So at one point I just said, like, I just like what, you don't like me anymore? And they literally like I had no idea who you were. Yeah, And then I realized I was like, shit, I no glasses, hairs hidden, I had no identifying characteristics at all. Do you even? Movie? Will be right back, welcome back to do you even movie? So when I was like leaning on them and touching them and standing close to them, I was doing it with like total confidence. Yeah, which is really horrifying. That's fair, That's definitely fair. What's the word familiarity? When you touch someone familiarity and you don't know them, it's very creepy.
1:12:39 So that is when at this point he goes or Warren wanders along the Haunt with his friends, but he finds himself left behind as he goes looking for them, his shirt gets cut on a nail and he cuts his hand a little bit. Yes, and this is the beginning of a quite a panic spiral. Yeah. So the sheriff finds Jerry telling him about Barker breaking out, and the sheriff tells him that he doesn't want to cause a panic, but they they'll keep him updated. As they go searching for him, JJ and his group find the PA room of the Haunt and they start drawing attention because they get on the PA they start making a fool of themselves and also one of their guys bumps into one of the crank like one of the electric boards and its it. S passes out a little bit. Yeah, so you actually think that he got shocked, but turns out he's fine. So that's when they go They go to exit and a haunter spooks JJ, who then throws a punch, knocking him out.
1:13:27 Just clocking I mean, just cleaning his goddamn clock. So Warren keeps wandering through the Haunt, stopping to look at a table that's a dorm with candles and skulls. We also see the little boy has snuck back into the Haunt again, as we also hear someone called a Warren for help. Warren then finds a man with a flashlight. He can't see who it is, and he asks if he's the one that of the troublemakers it's causing issues in the Haunt, and Warren says he's not. He just took a wrong turn, and the man tells him, all right, well, then go find your find your group and stay with your group, like it's too dangerous to wander in here alone. So Warren leaves, but in the next room comes face to face with a figure dressed just like the skull man with the scythe included. Yes, and this is where business is about to pick up. Yes it is, so he is smoothed, of course by this guy. Warren ducks behind some crates, but he also notices some blood on his hand, and then he notices that the scythe also has blood on it. So Warren sneaks past the man, but then comes face to face in them one more time, sending him into a sprint.
1:14:19 Warren gets into a room, trips over a stand with a candle on it. The candlestick falls on the ground and the figure runs in and trips over the candlestick. Warren wastes no time at all, grabs the scythe and shops this man's hand off. And this is an incredible moment because when the hand comes off, the skull man just stares yeah, and then raises his hand up bloody stump. And then of course our main character runs away. Scared, runs away silent, screaming. I love that he's screaming, but nothing's coming out. Yeah, no, it was very, very eerie. So he goes and screams, and that's when Jerry is told by one of his men to bring up the house lights because they have a serious problem going on. Due to JJ's group messing in the room, the lights now won't turn. On well, I mean in a haunt.
1:15:04 So he goes to the PA requesting everyone's staff included to leave the haunt immediately. So Warren finds a group one warning them about the man, and the haunted house starts to clear out. We watch various staff and guests go through the exit and Warren coming over a bridge with snakes and we hear this and everything gets tangled up in the rope bridge, falls over to the side, freaks out because like he falls into the snakes, until he realizes that all the snakes are fake. Yes, And it's worth mentioning that while they were waiting in line, one of the things that they were doing out there was they had a rattle rattle in a tank with a sign that said check out our snake pit, which is brilliant to like make you think that they have a bunch of rattlesnakes. But it really freaked him out. But now that he's realized the snakes aren't real, he was crazy. He takes one of the rubber snakes and bites head off just Ozzy Osbourne's that shit, yeah, and then gets goes into a laughing fit. It is really weird.
1:15:56 So outside the haunt, Brad and Shelley find a man that they think is an officer, and they're quick to tell him that need help, and then he's like, hey, hey guys, I'm not a cop. I one of the best things about how long, and his wife joins him as the prisoner and she's in like a cartoony prisoner costume. It's so good. So back in the pit, the little boy finds Warren offering him a cheer to help him out of the pit. He helps Warren out, gets him back through the haunts, but Warren stops as he comes across Barber's purse, which I love this and I never caught this before until now the salt spilled. Oh shit, uh huh. Okay, So he picks up the salt, puts everything back in her purse, and that's when he realizes now that the kid's also gone. So Warren wanders back through the haunt, and that's when the kid briefly scares him by putting his hand through a window and grabbing him. Read they rejoin, and that's when Warren goes into a room with a fake body, thinking it's real. The little boy tells him it's just for ten. Warren arms himself with a fake bone.
1:16:47 As they continue through the haunt, he gets spooked by more fake bodies that are hanging and he runs away, leaving the little boy. He uses a coffin to seal the door because he thinks somebody is chasing him, which is confirmed because the coffin is quickly knocked down. We see the call off and topple over as someone is clearly behind him. Warren makes it back to the room where he hid where but he bashes his knee right on a crate and he has to sink down to the floor for a little bit. He hears someone in the room next to him. He panics, grabs a chainsaw, trying to start it. But no, look no, because the chainsaw is never going to start when you need it to anyway. No, and I we can't do justice to the third the final act of this film. Yeah, it's all action with very little dialogue, very little character interaction beyond this man's crazed chase scene through the spook house trying to escape. To escape.
1:17:35 Yeah, so that's when he goes with the chainsaw in his hand. He runs to a curtain, but then he here's the thump. He pulls the curtain back, and that's when we see that there is a man passed out with a shotgun. I mean, it's better than a Teddy bear, you know, when you're a man. Yeah, So he knocked somebody out. He runs past the man, goes into another room, where he sees that he is right where the roof is. So he breaks a shingle, climbs onto a roof, and then another thing happens that I didn't catch it until this time. Oh yeah, a black cat crosses his path. Oh my god, that's so good. Yeah, so a black cat crosses his path on the roof. We see someone's in pursuit of him through a POV shot. So Warren's now climbing on the roof and that's when the roof gives in, dropping him into a pile of pumpkins.
1:18:16 This is one of my favorite moments because it's so absurd. Yeah, they just have a place with a shitload of uncarved pumpkins, which would hurt, it would smart. And now as he's rolling around trying to get himself righted, he's getting covered in pumpkin guts. Gord's all over the place, and that's when he wanders over to a wall where he can see out. He sees people, and that's when he calls to them, but no one's hearing him, and the camera pulls back, revealing that he's behind the mural on the Haunted House. Now, ah, I love this goddamn movie. So defeated, he sits down as he hears the cops on the pa outside calling to Barker in the Haunt telling him to come out. Warren, freaked out, realizes he's next to a coffin. He lightly opens it up to reveal there's just a red light inside, just blung up.
1:19:00 There's nothing inside the coffin. But as he closes the coffin lid, someone's standing in the doorway. Yes, and now shit's about to pick up. Shit's about to pick up because he has the shotgun nearby. He grabs it, holds it on the figure for a little bit as the figure starts approaching him, and that's when he goes down to the pit and fires the gun. We don't see anything that happens. We just hear the body slump and that's. When they go that. We see him run outside. He gets agreeted by the cops and they're like, you know, are you okay, Like is Barker in there? And that's when he says he shot him. And he's like, you know, you shot him, you shot Barker. We'll come on over here. So they take him to the side. And the cops are all on high alert. Yeah. So Warren tells the cop that he just kept coming so he cut his hand off and then he shot him.
1:19:43 And that's when the CoP's like, wait, wait, wait, you cut his hand off, Well, do we have that hand? And that's when the hand gets passed by. Yeah, yeah, because they're like, they're like, we gotta put that on ice stick at the hospital. They're like, the guy whose hand got cut off worked here, It works here. So that's when they reveal that we now see that there's an ambulance. We see the man that was knocked out is now being treated by the ambulance crew, and we also see that the skull figure is on a cot but his mask is off now and they're trying to take care of his stump. And that's when they revealed that Warren attacked one of the haunt workers that was trying to help him and get him out of the haunt with the scythe and the haunter tells Jerry he just wanted to get him out and then he attacked him. We also see the cops have now located Barker, who is in a nearby field picking flowers.
1:20:25 And this part I love, yeah because the reveal is so clever. They're all there with their guns and everything. And they're on the radio. They're like, you know, we Barker's here. Well, they're like, well, you're gonna love this, and they revealed that he's just been picking flowers. I've just been sitting of picking flowers. They never really establish what Barker. Did, no, just that he's an escape violent patient or. They escape mental mental patient. Yeah yeah, well, I mean that's my point is like, it doesn't necessarily guarantee that he's particularly violent, sir violent. Yeah, but it seems like because the driver died in the van, they decided to depend in on him when it was more than likely he hit the windshield and die most likely. And just the reveal that he's just picking flowers and he was nowhere near the haunt either. No, so, and this is the moment that made me go Okay, the chill nature of the first half of the movie combined with the goofy fun of running through the spook house, Yeah, that's all fine and dandy, but that ending tacks on like a whole extra star.
1:21:24 So the police enter the haunt and they go to where he had the shot fired off, and that's when they find the body of the sheriff shot dead. But he did not shoot the deputy. He did not shoot the deputy because the deputy's confronting him, telling him that Barker wasn't near the haunt, and they're arresting him for involuntary manslaughter. He reads him his rights as Warren keeps repeating, he just kept coming, He just kept coming. Do you even? Movie? Will be right back, welcome back to do you even movie? So they load Warren into the car in front of everyone.
1:22:06 We see the Haunt crowd go back to partying as Warren is driven away in the car with a smile on his face until he hears a voice say Warren Warren. We see his expression change back to fear, and that's when he pictures the skull figure on the Haunt. As it just keeps zooming in closer and closer, we see him become terrified, and that's when we close on a shot of the mural painted on the side of the building. As we see the moon, we hear evil laughter echo, and Barbera's voice state one more time, Halloween the most exciting day. And that is nineteen ninety one's scary movie. If you haven't watched it, for love of God, it's free on twob So good, do something nice for yourself. So would you like to know some fun things about the film? I mean, they better be fun. They better be fun.
1:22:49 Indeed, so Erickson wanted to raise two million for the project, but they ended up raising two hundred thousand dollars for the film in total. Wow, so the budget is two hundred thousand dollars. And that sounds like a lot, especially with inflation. But shooting on film, shooting for three weeks straight, yeah, it's you could burn through it really fast. Yeah. Ericson considered himself to be lucky to operate out on a bigger budget with bill and billing, sets, getting cranes, lenses, et cetera. Ericson was twenty two years old when they shot scary. Movie Wow, Just a Baby. Filmed in Austin, Texas, three weeks, six days a week, eighteen days shoot and Ericson stated thirty shots a day and it was two years of pre production and one year in post.
1:23:29 Oh, thirty shots a day. It's on film, I know. Just when I hear that, I'm like wow. A US distribution deal was never struck for the film, but a short foreign deal did occur. Troma actually wanted to purchase the film, but Ericson turned it down to a self release the film in Austin for a two week run. At the Village. It even had a DVD that was only available on the Austin market. That's wild to me. I mean, good on him for not taking a Trouma would have very likely never paid him a penny. No so, But like, at the same time, it's sad that the movie basically Lang Wish, Yeah, which is crazy, it really is. The production had to fight record breaking rainfall, which would often have them retreat inside to shoot, but due to the makeshift building, they would have to wade through water even for their interior shots. Jesus the Haunt was a makeshift sound stage with an open wall. The individual rooms were built on the stage, one room at a time, and there was no complete haunted house. It's all faked out.
1:24:23 I mean, they did a really damn good job. I mean I believe it just because it's so big and expansive on the inside. Yeah, but they did a really good job. John Hawks was cast in the film via a handshake deal at Huttsberger's in Austin. Keith Brunson, producer of the film, plays the man at the front of the house letting people in. Brunson designed his own look, and Ericsson even remembers his appearance that he wanted at first was very Beelejuice esque. Brunson was also responsible for bringing his friend Butch Patrick. To the project. Oh well, you never brought Butch Patrick to anything. I know but Patrick, Well then what then you have no excuse, y know if he remembers me, but I know him. In nineteen ninety one, the Austin City Council and Mayor Bruce Todd made a proclamation to clearing October eighteenth Scary Movie Day, calling on all citizens to recognize the considerable contributions made by scary movie to Austin movie industry, to the professional careers of the films all Austin cast and crew, and to the leisure enjoyment of scary movie enthusiasts across America.
1:25:20 It's worth mentioning this whole keep Austin weird thing where everybody's moving from everywhere to live in Austin. That is not very old. Austin really started to become a big deal place at the end of the nineties, and that really exploded by twenty ten, and now Austin is really what Austin, Texas is. Back then, Austin was at a little tiny city and Houston and Dallas were the real cities, but now Austin, of course is a major hub of all of Texas, So back then it was a pretty big deal to make a movie with Austin talent entirely in Austin, Yeah, entirely so.
1:26:04 Under the movie title during the opening credits. It has played a barcode As of twenty twenty one, this is associated with craft Rice Products HMM. Daniel Erickson gave John Hawks two films to watch in preparation for his performance, Nightmare at twenty thousand feet segment of Twilight Zone the movie, and the animated Disney short The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Ericson went on to say he's literally copying the fear in Paranoia. It was career changing performance for Hawks, becoming his ticket to Hollywood. Literally, he says, it put just enough money in his pocket. Right after production, he packed his bags and went straight to Hollywood. Wow, I mean, I believe it. Yeah. Ericson and his crew built The Haunt a stone's throwaway from Salt Lick in Driftwood, and production crew worked closely with iconic poster designer Danny Garrett to create the lived in facades of the movie's haunted house he's actually the one that also designed the murals on the Haunted House as well.
1:26:52 Oh nice, okay. Actor Jason Russell Waller, who played Brad in the film, stated, you'd be there for long days. We go out, have beers and do the whole thing again for the next day. We couldn't wait to get back on set. It sounded like it was a pretty fun time. The opening shot of the Haunted House includes Psycho House homage, and the house even included bone chairs as an homage to Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Well, and I, from what I understand, Texas Chainsaw Masacer too had just finished filming. Yeah, because while this film came out as it would in nineteen ninety one, it was filming in the beginning of nineteen ninety Yeah. Ericson commented that the gore in the film was fun to play with because Warren, as well as the audience, don't know what is real and what is not. It kept me guessing. Yeah. So, what are your final thoughts on nineteen ninety one's scary movie?
1:27:34 Oh my gosh, I mean, it's a rented one thousand percent rented, and if you're a total fucking nerd, then it's a by it. Get it. I am a total if. You're a film collector, this is worth owning just for the short films of the director too. Yeah. I mean this movie is such a fascinating gem. It has so much to offer while also being pretty simple. Yeah. I remember multiple times thinking about how as we were watching it, how wild it is that there's like not a lot of music in the beginning. It's kind of quiet almost, but it really draws me in and makes me feel that halloweeny feeling, which is extra. The point of all these these films we're covering this month is what movies make us feel kind of halloweeny. Yeah, and this definitely.
1:28:19 Absolutely it's a rent for me as well. This is just a perfect Halloween hangout film. I also love the fact that it's it happened one night movie, so it happens in a short amount of time. You get to see an incredible performance by John Hawks before he was a name. Yeah. Yeah. And also on top of that, you just get a feeling for what Halloween used to be for, because there's i mean, spook houses when it came to like them being on farms and whatnot. Like I've heard stories about how it used to be like every town would basically have one. Yeah, I mean I've heard that too. So I mean this is absolutely absolutely a time capsule of a time we no longer have. Unfortunately, I mean Rusmakami's house a spook house was on his own property. Yeah.
1:29:00 No, we always like this in the show. With a couple of recommendations, I have two this week. First one from two thousand and nine, scarre Zone. Scare Zone is Oliver's pride and joy. Sure, it's just another strip mall Halloween horror house, but as always, he puts his heart and soul into it. The attraction is open for three nights only, and Oliver has brought back his old staff, including X con Spider, Eager to Eager, Bride to Be Summer, and the ignin Oh my God, Enigmatic, enigmatic Goth Princess Claire. A bunch of newvies are also on board, including Ernest Young Darrell, who immediately finds himself bewitched by the creepy Clear. The dysfunctional screen team learns to work together while someone in something is out to make the horror real. Oh it's a good plow. It's Indie one that I found when I was working at Fye back. I've not seen that.
1:29:40 Yeah, scarre Zone for two thousand and nine. And the other one I'm gonna give is one I just recently saw Hell House LC from twenty fifteen. Five years after an unexplained malfunction causes the death of fifteen tour goers and staff on the opening night of a Halloween Haunted House tour, a documentary crew visits the scene of the tragedy to investigate what really happened that night. I do enjoy Hellhouse. The hell Houses is really good. What's your recommendation? So I have one for you that it It gives me a kooky, fun vibe. It's not a Halloween story or even a hat story, but it's nineteen ninety seven's Campfire Tales, a anthology horror film which just recently became available to stream on Amazon Prime. I think it's an incredibly underrated kind of post scream horror film starring James Marsden, Amy Smart among others, and it's basically a group of teens entertained one another by telling an anthology of famous urban legends with a modern twist, including makeout point, monsters, psychopaths, and ghosts. This one. It's it's as bare bones as you can get. It's back to basics of spookiness. And I really truly love this one.
1:30:54 It was a VHS rental for me from Hollywood Video when I was a teenager and I've always loved it ever since. Cat frit Tails is a really good one. Thanks for the podcast, Patrick, I think Crampis would be great. We can also do the director's cut, yeah, the naughty cut. Naughty cut, yes, yeah, Okay, well man, December is shaping up quite nicely. Yes, it is.

1:32:41 Yes at a point, yeah, which I mean counts. It counts, okay, because it's a scary ass movie. Yeah. And there are so many things I could say about Dark Knight of the Scarecrow is it's the epitome of that made for TV horror era. And where can people find it if they want to watch it before next week's show? Basically anywhere that you stream stuff from if I remember correctly. So what that means is you didn't know, No, I did my research. That's why I was saying it's bailable, like everywhere from what I remember.
