Henrique Couto and David Denoyer travel to 1931 Illinois for Road to Perdition (2002), Sam Mendes’ Depression-era gangster drama adapted by David Self from the graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner. Tom Hanks plays Irish mob enforcer Michael Sullivan opposite Tyler Hoechlin as his surviving son, Michael Jr.; Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Stanley Tucci fill out a remarkable crime-film ensemble photographed by Conrad L. Hall.
After Michael Jr. witnesses Connor Rooney murder a rival, the Rooney family’s attempt to erase that secret destroys the Sullivans’ home. Father and son flee Rock Island for Chicago while crime-scene photographer and contract killer Harlan Maguire tracks them. Their journey moves through hidden Capone money, improvised bank robberies, a healing stay with an elderly farm couple and a rain-soaked reckoning with John Rooney before reaching the beach house at Perdition. The hosts unpack the movie’s restrained violence, visual storytelling and full-spoiler ending.
The central discussion asks whether Sullivan can save his son’s innocence without escaping his own choices. Henrique initially finds the film deliberate and dreary, then warms to the way the trip teaches an emotionally distant killer how to become a father.
