This is gonna be an interesting episode because once again I picked a movie that resonated with you. Oh did it?

I'm surprised you don't just come over sometimes when you bring these movies to me and then you're shocked by my commentary, I'm like, why didn't you You brought me Abandoned Children the movie? Why are you? Why Abandoned Children the movie? That's a new one. I mean, I I mean, it just seems like a movie you would like. I mean, would I would watch that? Probably? Yeah? Probably so so. But uh so we're here tonight with a very special episode all about the film Parenthood, and sadly, in order for Dave to get me to watch it, he tried to convince me this was about a bunch of parents who wind up in the hood, which I was so excited about. Then we start watching it and it's about feelings or something, feelings. I don't know why it resonates with you so strongly, mister two parents, And it's all fine. I'm a sucker for a good story, especially when it compiles a bunch of stories together. And I mean, it's Ron Howard. How can you dislike Ron Howard very easily? Really go ahead? Okay, well, first of all, I mean when he was Opie on the Andy Griffith Show, I just wanted to sock him right in the head. The only one and sure not the only one. No, No, I mean I like Ron Howard's I mean, I I think he's kind of fallen off in the last absolutely fifteen years. Yeah, but he had a he had quite a go for a while. He absolutely and I'm maybe wrong when you when you dive into filmography. I always felt like he kind of peaked with Apollo thirteen a couple of films after that, but Paulo thirteen was definitely a big one.

Yeah, he's got a couple more on there that were bigger to I'll be the judge of that, Yes you will, because I didn't even realize some of the movies he directed later on. And also he's majorly on like prime in Netflix now. Yeah. Well so Spielbert, Yeah, Spielberg too. Yeah, because it's like they can't make movies that sell anymore. Yeah, exactly, didn't you direct a Star Wars movie and nobody nobody cared solo Star Wars story never even I don't even know what that means. Yeah, so I know, hate on Ron Howard. It's just uh, yeah, it's just kind of a lot of those guys who had their heydays in the eighties and nineties, a lot of them have had a big struggle to stay highly relevant. I mean, hell, even people who are big in the early two thousands, Judd Apatow is not really relevant anymore. Yeah, honestly. So it's tough. It's tough to be like to be that director who had your finger on the pulse for so long and then one day it's like you lost it.

But that all being said, Yeah, we're talking about the nineteen eighty nine film Parenthood, Yes, which is a film that I had never seen. Yes, it was another first timer. Yeah for me. I mean, Dave was like, oh, bro, bro, you're gonna love this one. Bro. Bro bro bro, just bro, just bro bro bro. I was heavy on this one though, Yeah, you were. In my defense, I wasn't the only one, because I know Patrick wrote in and said that we needed to cover it. So Patrick, this is for you. And Derek wrote in, commented on Facebook or on a YouTube yeah, and was saying like it's one of his all time favorites. Yeah. So well we'll see how wrong you all, oh, will we? Okay, but I guess it's time to dive into the pertinent deeds on the film, So double D take it away, all right. Parenthood nineteen eighty nine two hours and four minutes. The film is PG thirteen. Unfortunately it does not. It did not give me a reasoning for the PG thirteen on any other place. You don't think it was the swearing, the sexual humor, and the nudity. Well, I get that, yes, and scenes from a Porto film. Yes, I mean I I mean you better have trivia about where that porno film came from within the movie. I don't have that trivia. But I have one job, you know, trombajo David. So.

5:11 The director, as we mentioned, is Ron Howard. Ron Howard starts his acting career in nineteen fifty six on Frontier Woman. He does an episode of the Twilight Zone in fifty nine, then, of course the end He Gripped Show, where he played Opi in nineteen sixty. He appeared on Lancer in nineteen sixty eight, a couple episodes of Lastie in nineteen seventy. Do you ever think about the Howard boys, like the dad's just sitting there. It's like, well, I reckon, I reckon. Ronnie should be the qutie pie on on on the Andy Griff Show. And then he's like and Clint there, oh, Clint ice cream Man, Star Trek will put you on Star Trek as an alien that they did. There you go, buddy, don't bite my fingers. Kid. We love Clint Howard here for the oh. I adore Clint Howard. Yes, And of course Clint Howard is in the film as well well. Of course he it's a Ron Howard movie.

So he does American Graffiti in nineteen seventy three, The Spikes Gang in seventy four, Happy Days in seventy four, as well Eat My Dust, where he starts working for Roger Corman. His first directorial, by the way, too, Eat My Dust was his first one, grandt The Thought of acted it he acted in, and then Grand Theft Auto in seventy seven. He also does American Graffiti or More American Graffiti in seventy nine, so his first directing is Grand Theft Auto in seventy seven. Then he does Cotton Candy in seventy eight, Skyward nineteen eighty, Night Shift nineteen eight two. Have you seen Nightshift? By the way, I don't think so. So Night Shift is Henry Winkler Michael Keaton, directed by Ron Howard, and it's basically Michael Keaton gives Winkler the idea for them to make money by using the mortuary where they work at as basically a brothel. No, I would remember that. Okay, night Shift is amazing. It's really good. Also, Joe Spinel's in it at the end as well well, Hell's Bells in Taco Show. So then Howard goes on to direct Splash in nineteen eighty three, Cocoon in nineteen eighty five, Gung Ho, Michael Keaton eighty six, will Own eighty eight. Then he does Parenthood in eighty nine, Backdraft in ninety one, Far and Away in ninety two, The Paper in ninety four. That's when I remember you showing me yes, I love the Paper. That is definitely a future episode, and I think I've said that before as well. Paula thirteen and ninety five.

Barry McKenzie holds his own seventy four, Patrick seventy eight, Money Movers seventy eight, as in that one, as in that one. Osplitation is where this guy gets a start because he's Kirkpatrick, wasn't in Australia. I thought it was only the second one. No, first one is second one Italian knockoff that nobody. So, like I said, we had him on the show previously with the edge, this man has an incredible body of work. But you'll find out on this movie everyone does well. It's almost like Hollywood through a stack of money, are crazy right?

10:11 DVD synopsis says Gil Buckman, a funny and loving husband who's also trying hard to be the perfect parent who his uniquely different kids. As Gil and the rest of the Buckman's discover being the perfect parent often means just letting children be themselves. I don't think that's what they learned my synopsis. Attempting to raise their children in their own ways, four siblings of the Buckman family all face the ups and downs of life as they begin to figure out their own successes to parenting. I mean I would have said challenges to parenting. Yeah, that's good, but stop the show. We got to start over. Ohkil let's rewind it. I don't have a sound effect ready for this. Uh nah, I got nothing fair enough? Uh So? And is this readily available? Yes? This is readily available so you can find this on several streaming platforms right now. And there is also a Blu ray the Universal released about ten years ago. Now Fantastic Blue Ray release has a bunch of bonus content, so if you're a fan of this movie, it is very easy to get your hands on. All right, good to know, Good to know. So moving down to our cast, we have mister Steve Martin who plays Gil Buckman at this point, and I want to mention, yes, this is quite the ensemblade. Yes, so we'll get to learn all about Dave's personal vendettas and prejudices by who he leaves out. Oh no, See, that's the thing is I have I have bodies of work, Yes, but we're gonna also talk about some more of the cast. Even if I don't give bodies of work, I refuse, well, too bad.

11:33 So Steve Martin, who plays Gil Buckman, he at this point has done the Jerkin seventy nine, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid in eighty two, The Man with Two Brains eighty three, Three Amigos playing strains Automobile's former episode ever Heard of It? Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in eighty eight, Those Parenthood in eighty nine, then goes on to do My Blue Heaven the following year. Never heard of it yet. We just watched it. Yeah, but not for the show, so it doesn't know. It's like it never happens if we don't sit and talk about the movie for at least an hour on camera saying that there's not a chance we might do My Blue Heaven on the show. You know, if we ever did a show where it was like a multi pack of movies that aren't that great but are still worth which I actually thought about that recently, about how if we wanted to do do a show where we didn't want to necessarily talk about the film the entire time, we could do just like a culmination of some or we could just make it up and not even talk about Oh fair enough, Okay, I mean we already do that though, that is true. Jokes on you guys. We just lucked out and completely guessed every moment in The Edge. Yeah, that was total luck. That was yes, Eli story in ninety one, Father the Bride, ninety one, Leap of Faith, Mixed Nuts, The Out of Towners, and Bowfinger. I basically went up to the nineties because what I did with this episode with it being such a large cast list is I wanted to see what they'd done before and what they did that same year. Basically, okay, So Mary Steinbergin, who plays Karen Buckman, she did Time after Time in seventy nine, which was her debut midsommer night sex comedy in eighty two, One Magic Christmas in nineteen eight. I love that movie, Sad as Hell. Sad as Hell former episode Dead of Winter in eighty seven, Parenthood in eighty nine. Then she does Back to the Future Part three and ninety Yeah, The Butcher's Wife in ninety one, What's Eaton, Gilbert Grape ninety three, Philadelphia ninety three, Clifford ninety four, My Summer Story ninety

And I know, I think we mentioned it last show, but My Summer Story, the official sequel to Christmas Story, is absolutely worth a watch if you can get your hands. I've heard great things about it. It's super fun. Then we move on to Diane Weiese, who plays Helen Buckman. She was in It's My Turn in nineteen eighty I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can eighty two, Footloose in eighty four, The Purple Rosa Cairo in eighty five, Hannah and her Sisters in eighty six, Radio Days in eighty seven, The Lost Boys in nineteen eighty seven as well. I love that one, Parenthood in eighty nine, then she does Edward Scissorhands the following year in ninety Cops and Robertson's in ninety four. Why did you list anything other than Cops and Robertson's. I've actually never seen it. Hell, I don't know. I've seen. I've seen a couple scenes on cable, but like I go, I've seen a couple scenes on I kind of wanted to go into the Chevy Chase blind Spots, but I don't know how deep I want to go. Yeah, Yeah, Cops and Robertson's ninety four, The Scout ninety four, The Bird Cage in ninety six, The Horse Whisper in ninety eight, and Practical Magic in ninety eight as well. We also have Jason Roe Barbs, who plays Frank Buckman one hundred and thirty two credits on this Gentleman's resume. Oh we watched that, Yes, mccorman. Something Wicked This Way Comes as adapted from Ray Bradbury's story, and Roe Barbs plays like the plays the p Did he play the wicked or the coum? He does not play the wicked or the coms. He plays the protagonist in it and It's one of my favorite roles of his, and I wish more people would see that movie. And I think actually it might be on Plus now, so it may be more available than it was because I had to get a copy from the Disney Movie Club, which is disbanding by the way. Wow. Yeah, in Here at the Wind nineteen eighty eight with Jack Lemon, Yeah, in the HBO movie I Love You. Watched it in school, didn't you. We watched We watched that version, and we watched the one from the forties or fifties, oh wow, the black and white one. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, we watched both in school and we did an entire when I was in high school, we did an entire chapter or whatever you want to call it on and the play Inherit the Wind, and then we watched two movie versions of it ice And while I liked the original one, I'd probably like the original one more now. Jack Lemon was just so good, perfect, and Inherit the Wind, Yeah, that it left an impression on me for a long time. I mean, he's a great actor. I mean we talked about grumpy old men, of course, but Inherit the Wind is I can't remember if it was a couple of years ago or whatnot, but they they put them both up on I want to say it was Max and I

Rick moranis is in this, Tom Holst is in this, Martha Plimpton, Keanu Reeves and Joaquin Phoenix as Leaf of Phoenix. This was the last film before he had changed his name to Joaking Well. He was like fifteen or something. Yes, yes, he was Alison Porter, who Maning may know from the early Pepsi commercials in Curly Sue, which may or may not be a future episode as well. And I think that's mainly it for the big ones. But this movie is one really really stacked cast. And of course Clint Howard well, and he plays a prick. He plays some prise, quite a prick. We'll get to him, don't you worry. So, like we said, Parenthood is currently available, you can't find it streaming. Of course, this was your first time watching, so correct, We'll get to you at the end. Oh geez, okay, fine, my first time watching this.

18:06 This was a movie that was on cable a lot growing up. TBS and TNT played it a lot, and it was one that my parents liked, but they weren't huge fans of it, like we even had a VHS recorded of it that had like Parenthood written on it in sharpie. And I remember the only time that tape ever came out was when my sister informed my mom that Howie from the Backstreet Boys was an extra in Parenthood, and he is. He's in the classroom scene at the end with Miranus and his wife. So that was the only time that tape ever came out. So I actually didn't see this in its entirety until three years ago. Twenty twenty one is when I saw this because I actually checked my letterbox today because I was curious if I logged it, and I did, and I was really really blown away by how good this movie was. It was one that I'd heard about and people had said it was good, but it was played down to me just how freaking good this movie is in my opinion, the culmination of the stories and the way it all plays out, I think is some of the best writing. But also with Howard directing it, I'm not surprised and you're not broken home. Oh my gosh, what just saying I need to be more choosy about my tie. I mean, you're the one who is like, let's do a movie about family. Great idea, Dave. So are you ready to get into the movie? Then vaguely all right, well here we go. So we open with a shot of a young kid and his father attending a baseball game. We find out that the kid is young Gil Young Steve Martin's character, and his father takes him to the game, he sits him down, and then we see his father, which is supposed to be Jason Real Barber's go over to this usher and he's like, Hey, this guy's gonna sit with you, Like, you know, I got some business to attend. I got to meet the guys. So the usher starts talking to the kid, and that's when they reveal that this is a memory

19:37 of Martin's because the kids starts saying like how He's like, I'm not a kid, actually at all. I'm actually thirty five and you're just a figment of my imagination. But A can't think of the word I want to use, but a core memory that I have where basically you you culminated a lot of malgamy. Yeah, and that's when we've cut to Gil. He's at the game with his family. Mary Steinberg and is his wife, and she's like, you know, the game's over, E ready to go. And that's when we see that they have three kids together. They're leaving the baseball game, and of course they're carrying some of the kids. One of the kids is being dragged by them to the car. Very much three young kids, Yeah, and it's we see them pack up the car. We see Steamberg and wiping the kid's mouth, and they get in the car and Gil is basically telling us that, like, you know, he's thirty five, he's got a family, and that he's happy. And they're driving home and his son starts singing a diarrhea song and could you recite I don't remember you don't remember it. I don't remember it. What were you writing down the whole time we were watching the movie, if not the diarrhea sa, that's what I was writing down. You seriously were writing down anything other than the diarrhea song? I said, diarrhea song sunned by Kevin the Sun. That's what's written in my notes. Oh god, I can't remember how it goes like I'm blanking right. You're making me very sad. You're pulling up the lyrics, So of course I am, because I'm a professional, unlike Dave.

He's like, Oh, I learned it a camp and Steve Martin goes, oh, that was money well spent. So we see that they are worn out by the song. They finally get home, Kevin's passed out in Steve's arm. They're putting the kids to bed, and that's when the youngest justin comes into the room and he's dressed in a cowboy costume, which is just a cowboy hat and his guns like his sling forer, his gun, no pants. Yes, this is very similar to how Dave gets when he has a few whiskeys in him. You don't even know that I do.

And he goes to his daughter and she's like, you know, I don't feel good and he's like, do you have to throw up? And then she pukes on him. Yeah. It is hilarious. It's just a sudden and it just splashes on him. He sits there for a beat because he's like trying to kind of comprehend what just happened. Yeah, and then his wife's like, well, don't just stand there clean it. But it's like he'd literally been puked on like three seconds ago. It's very funny. That's very funny. So that's when Gil and Karen settle under their bed and they're enjoying each other's company, and Karen mentions that they have a meeting with the principal for Kevin on Monday because apparently Kevin is making faces. That's concerning the staff. That's initially what they get at what initially what they get? Yeah, So then we meet Gil's sister, and that is when we meet Diane Weese. We see first leave Phoenix, of course, walking Phoenix, and he opens his door, gets a paperback or puts a paper bag in, and then he gets ready for school, goes out to the living room.

26:38 His mom's like, hey, you know, we have dinner tonight. Everybody's gonna be there. He doesn't say anything, leaves out the door, and she's like, okay, good talk. I mean teenage kid. Teenage kid. So that's when she goes into her daughter's Julie's room, who's played by Martha Plimpken, and she's talking to her about you know, your SAT scores are gonna get you far. You know, hurry up, you're gonna be late for school. So she goes out of the room, and that's when Keanu Reeves glides out from under the bed who plays Todd in this, and he was hiding from her, of course, because he's been staying over. He has been over doing a little getting up to a little monkey business. Monkey business indeed, because he's like, you know, I've got an idea, and he takes out his camera and says that they're going to, uh, you say, I can't really document their document their love. Yes, record the love. Yeah, yeah, record their love. So Helen is very proud of Julie and she's bragging to her sister Susan on the phone, and that's when we meet Nathan that is played by Rick Moranis and Susan and Nathan have a daughter, Patty, which is the little girl Trixie from Problem Child Too. That's I was trying to recognize her, I was wondering, Yeah, and she is a gifted child because Maranas is like using all his time to like teach her French and all this stuff like they do flash cards they do. He's constantly teaching her things because he keeps saying that that their brains are so much more able to learn things when they're that young.

So at the family gathering that night, Gil's father, Frank, which is played by Jason Robarbs, he's hanging out in front of the bar and he asked me Gil. He's like, you know what, whose wedding was it that I got drunk at? And he's like all three of them? Dad, He's like, but wait, which wedding was it that I punched out the band leader? He's like, oh, that was mine. And we kind of get a feeling right away that Gil and his father kind of have in a strange relationship. A Strange is not the right word, is it not. No, A strange would mean that they don't interact. Oh okay, no, I would call it a strained strain strange, Yeah, yeah, and without a doubt. I mean, I can tell you the difference. I know it very well. The difference be being estranged and strained. So he's got a big surprise to the family and that's what he's like, Okay, everybody get in the big surprises here. And that's when we meet Gil's younger brother, Larry, played by Tom Holme, and Larry is absolutely the black sheep of the family. Yeah, you could not have said that better.

28:48 Yeah, and we we get a feeling quick because Gil goes to I think it's is it Patty that he says it too, that he's no, it's I think it's one of his sons that he's like, you know, that's your that's your uncle. Don't loan him money. Don't give him money. Yeah, to a little little kid, I love, that's your uncle over there. Don't give him anything, don't give him any money. So that's when we also, you know, Larry's going around the room saying hi to buddy from the trailer. He goes up to his grandma and he's like, are you getting smaller? And she's like, I'm shrinking and he goes, ah, bummer, my grandma shrank quite a bit, Mina. I think, yeah, I had a couple of shrank Yeah, you're like, my grandma slipt upside down like a bath. So she never had that problem, never had that problem. No, No, my my my mother's mother, Uh just got smaller and smaller and smaller. And they were not big ladies to begin with, they were all pretty small. But yeah, she was like four foot eight. I think like legally, legally a little person.

And that's when we see a kid peek in and he's like, you know, I told you to wait outside. And that's when we meet his African American son, Cool Yeah. Yeah, his name is just Cool Cool yes, yeah, and these cute little kid with a big, big puffy afro. Very cute kid. Stop. And that's when they sit down to dinner and he tells him that he got cool because he was in Vegas. He was dating a showgirl who they had kind of grown apart, and then two months later she came to him and said, this is your son. I have to leave the country because I shot someone. So here's your son. So here's your son. Here's your son. It's a story as old as time itself.

30:36 And once again they're sitting at the dinner table, they're all talking, and everybody again is just kind of uncomfortable around Larry. And we find out why because Larry is back with another get rich scheme, and this time it's hot, Get rich quick, Get rich Quick, yes, and that's because he has figured out a way to get into hydroponics. And at first Nathan's like, oh, may that's a good business, you know, are are you using this this or this? And He's like, Oh, that's that's discussion for the guy in the lab coat. I'm just the salesman. Then yeah, and he seems like he, you know, he sounds like like a guy who would know how to sell things. Well, I mean, what with getting a showgirl pregnant who shot someone? Yeah, yeah, yeah, it just seems like the kind of guy you'd want to trust. You know, you're the kind of guy you'd hand your car keys to while you're taking your pregnant wife into the emergency room. Yeah, exactly sure. And we can see that Frank is really the only one that embraces Larry, like he's the one that kind of just tries to to cheerlead for him because it's a sun and he's he's hoping for the best and whatnot. And suddenly the lights go out of dinner, so everybody's freaking out, and Gill's like, you know, okay, well I'll go find a flashlight and he goes into Helen's room and he's like, you know, well the flash light's not working.

31:37 The lights turn back on, and he's holding a vibrant Yeah, which I mean, you know, you really shouldn't keep your vibrator in a common area. I wouldn't draw or but I mean, but you know, maybe, I mean, times are tough, and you know she's been dealing with some with quite a dry spell. So Diane West is having a rough time. Yes, yes, So Gill and Karen go to Kevin's meeting with the principal and that's when they tell them that Kevin is you know, Kevin's a bright kid, but we don't think he should return to school next fall. In fact, we're thinking that they should transfer him to a special school that deals with emotional kids. Yeah. Apparently he's extremely sensitive. Yeah, he gets upset very easily. And they mentioned that the teacher is basically spending twenty percent of her time just working with him, with him in a classroom of thirty eight, which is large classrooms. Well, I mean, I know, you didn't grow up in a vast metropolis, and I had a small I was in a smaller town outside of Dayton, but I mean our classes were very seldom thirty more than thirty. We had at least twenty, maybe twenty five. I mean that's considered a pretty small class size. Yeah so, but yeah, so saying that their class is thirty eight kids, I mean, that's a lot of kids that have to be cared for. No, it absolutely is. And that's when Karen questions, you know, is it because that he was their first kid? Like did they not get parenting right?

32:53 And that's when Steve Martin's character goes, well, she smoke grass. She smoked like a ton of grass. I never spoke a while it was pregnanty. He's like, in college, looked like a chimney. I thought you were gonna leave me for a reggae band. Yeah. So, Gil's concerned also about the stigma of a special school because he doesn't want Kevin to be bullied. So like there, you know, he says, we will figure this out. You know, we're not We're not gonna send him to a public special school. It would be a private institution. We'll figure out the money and everything, and you know, he tells the school basically like we'll take care of this, don't worry about it. And the principle is kind of uneasy with that, and she's like, all right, if that's what you want. I mean, they understand. I appreciated the level of like direct honesty that Steve Martin's character went with. I mean he literally she just said like it's not a big deal. He's like, the stigma is real. Yeah. No, I mean it's very sweet that he says that, because as somebody that had to go to a couple special programs because of I was I've been learning disabilities with a math especially. It wasn't great when kids found out that I was going to the Sylvan Learning Center. I you should not have let me find out about that. You knew that I did not. You knew that I did not know. I mean, I mean I knew in my heart. Careful what you say right now. I knew in my heart that you were disabled mentally. But I think we all do this. Always had trouble with math. I'm actually really good at English.

34:08 Surprisingly, I see no evidence of that. Uh, and you speaking around me all the time. So now, poor crazy crazy, right, So we Todd and Julie as they are getting their pictures from the photo Matt, except they've come to find out that it's pictures from Julie's mom's most recent dinner that she had with work people, which means that Helen got the pictures. Because Julie goes to the booth and she's like, you have another envelope for Buckman. He's like, oh, yeah, we did, but they were picked up. So we cut to Helen at the house. This scene was very funny, but it did feel kind of out of place, almost a little bit being a little too funny. I think it's because it's early on in that you haven't gotten a full idea as to what her life is like yet, because she is a little deeper with sure. So Helen's at the house going through the pictures and Julie comes home and Diane Weese in this part is this look at the picture and she's like, oh, this, this one's going to be perfect for my wallet, and just flipping through them, commenting on them, and Julie's like, you know, it's not what you think. And that's when she's like, you know, I recognize the room, like you did this in my house, Like you had sex in my house and took pictures of it. And she's like, oh, and I noticed it's todd because his face is leaking a little bit in the shop of these pictures. So they fight about it, and that's when she's like, you know, well, at least I'm not at least I'm somebody having sex in this house. Yeah, at least somebody's having sex in this house, which pisses dian Wee's character off, and she's like, you know, how could you say that to me? You know, I'm having sex with machines because I can't trust men. Basically, your father left me for somebody.

35:34 And that's when we find out that they split, and that it was because the dad found somebody else and also didn't want to give up the life to basically be with his kids. Well, he had more kids. He had more kids with another person. And he's also a successful dentist because that will come up later well, and she mentioned early on that he doesn't want to work on his own kids anymore. Yeah, So Julie leaves, telling her mom that she's in love with Todd and she's going to go live with him. He's got a job as a painter, they're going to get a house together, and that's when, right as she's packing up, Gary comes home and she's like, you know, carry your sister's leaving. And he's like, oh okay, Diane Weis goes you see, you've upset your brother too. You've upset your brother. He just like, all right, you just walk past. So Helen runs after her, because when Julie goes to leave, Helen's like, you know, if you walk out the door, don't you come back. You know, we're done. And Julie goes up the door and she chases after. She's like, honey, if it doesn't work out, you always have a home here. Yeah. Yeah, she she's definitely I've I experienced that as a kid. My mom Uh we never fought really, but my mother and my sister would fight some. Yeah, and that was kind of my mom's you know, she would get very emotional and but like, you know, three seconds later it'd be like, no, no, no, I'm still I'm still your mom, so you know, be mad, and then I'd be like, but you know, I'm here.

36:40 You know, that actually really resonated with me quite a bit, because, yeah, she's like basically begging her not to leave and making a reminder, if you need anything, you call me, If you need whatever, you call me. And I found that very relatable. And very realistic. It's I love the scene because it just the switch is so quick and it's just like, yeah, I've seen moms do that before, have you. I have ort my mom, but I've seen moms do that. Why are you staring at me? I don't know, mister, your family's still married. God. So Frank and Larry are in Frank's garage as he shows off his car, because that's one thing I forgot to mention is that when Larry comes in, he gives his dad a car, so we get we get an impression that his dad's really into cars, and that is proven in the next scene where he spent three years working on a really nice car and got it completely renovated. He's uh, and he's like showing it off to Larry, and that's when Marilyn, his wife, comes out, and she's like, you know, cool is done with his lunch. You know, I was thinking you guys could take him out, and Tom, yeah. Tom Hols's character is like, no, no, it's fine, just plopping in front of the TV, like we're busy in here. Yeah, plopping in front of the TV. That's what he does anyway, That's what he does anyway. So that's when Larry expresses to his dad that, you know, he has the big plan and that he may need a little money to get back on his feet, and it's into the tune of three grand. Yeah, he does the thing where he's like, no more than three grand, no more than three times? Yeah, yeah, two grand, no more than three. So we cut to Nathan and Patty as they are practicing karate in the front yard, because when Larry was at the dinner table with them, I did forget to mention that the grandma was normally staying with them, but she is going to stay with Nathan and Patty for a little bit.

38:08 So Tom holds his character Larry can move in well throughout the movie, she kind of gets bounced from house to house. Yeah. So they're practicing karate in the yard and Susan comes home saying that she has an idea for a trip to Mexico, and Nathan's excited and he's, you know, like this is so great, and he's like, hey, you excuse me. Susan is like, you know, we could leave Patty with Gil, and he's like, I don't know about leaving Patty with Gil, Like I don't know if that's gonna be good for her. He's like, hey, why don't we take her with Like this would be a great opportunity to go ahead and get her instituted on Spanish and like, you know, start her learning even more so. And Susan's like, you know, I thought it could just be us, and he's like, it will be. We'll get two bedrooms and then she says which one. But one thing it's important to mention is he looks at Gil's kids as like he's afraid that they'll catch like that his daughter will catch stupid from them. Basically, that's like his big fear, which makes him hard to like. Well, because they had an early exchange before the dinner where he was showing Gil that Patty can recognize like the square root of what like eight eighty nine hundred six or something like that, with drawings of dots the square root of this, And it was funny because they cut back to Justin Gilson and he's eating the dots off the page, the dots right off the paper, needing him. So at the office, gil finds out that he didn't make this partnership that he's counting on and that they're looking at another guy, and he opens up to his boss about how, like, you know, I can't put him more work right now. I can basically do what I'm doing because my son, you know, I need to spend more time with my son. I feel like I'm overworking in it.

And his boss is like, you know, well, you know that's your decision, but like we haven't decided on partner ship yet, so you still have time to figure this out. So Gil leaves and we see Kevin and Gill at the movies and they're hanging out playing arcade machines, and that's when Kevin asked, you know, Dad, why am I seeing a psychologist? And Gil tells him it's nothing to worry about, you know. He takes his mind off at as best he can. He's like, you know, some people just go through problems. Sometimes we're just trying to do what's best for you. And hey, you got your birthday coming up. Yeah, and he's like, you know, can Cowboy Dan on my birthday? And he's like, who's Cowboy Dan? And he's a Western impersonator that does balloon animals right right right. So we see Frank then showing cool his car, and suddenly Larry is thrown out of a speeding car right outside the house. Yeah. I love the way he recovers too. He just rolls under the grass and just gets up. Hey Dad, Yeah, is dinner ready? And it's really cool because this is the first time that we see Robarb's character in Cool talking to each other because Robarb says that hilarious line because when he was talking to Larry in the garage he talks about how like, this is a car that I got laid in for my first time. He says the same thing to Cool and he's like, not cool, that's a story for another time. He's like five or something. So he gets thrown out of the speeding car, and Julie returns home brought by the police for panhandling, confessing that she left Todd because he changed his mind about the house painting house painting plan and that he's going to race cars instead. She didn't want any part of that and told him it was stupid, and Todd said that he was not going to let some bitch ruin his life. I mean, when you're right, you're right. So we see Dian Weist and Julie have this really seen together, and she's like no, let's go eat a lot of ice cream. And they're, you know, going over the things, and that's when Todd rushes in and he's

41:05 like, you know, we need to talk and she's like no, no, get away from me, Todd, like you know, I don't want anything to do with you. She runs out of the house, and of course Helen is right behind him, smacking him with the newspaper because like he's heard her little girl, yeah, until he says you're my wife. You're my wife? What? Then she's like she turns and starts hitting her daughter. They got married two days ago. Yeah, of course they did, because why wouldn't she So she starts hitting her and that's when Todd confesses they got married, and he says, you know, I was under pressure from my brothers, you know, but I told them like it's you and me, like I'm not doing that anymore. I'm gonna go do the house painting plan. So everything's on the up and up now. Yeah, happy, confinitely. So we cut back to Gil at Kevin's baseball practices. We see Gil is taking over the little league coaching. He assigns Kevin to second base, telling him, you know, don't worry about it. The best thing out there is to go and have fun, because the kids aren't really keen to Kevin playing second base, especially that one kid, which actually turns out to be Clint Howard's son. Yeah. Yeah, that kid's a little shit.

41:54 He is a little shit. The apple doesn't fall fire from the shit tree. So he tells him, you know, there's gonna be catches you catch, and there's gonna be catches you don't catch, you know, just go out there and have fun with it. That was one of my favorite modes of the whole movie. Yeah, he just takes a moment with the son. He says, hey, they'll be catch as you catching, they'll be catches you don't catch. Just go out there and play. Yeah, and his son just lights up, lights up and is so happy to get back in the game. And that's when Gil fantasizes at being at Kevin's graduation. I think it's college because he's like, you know, we're welcoming the valedictorian to the stage, and like Kevin gets on the stage, adult Kevin, and it's just like, you know, I can't do anything but thank my father for you know, inspiring me and telling me I could do it. And so Steve Martin stands up, who's completely an old makeup but they've got him so old it out in this shot and the whole audience is applauding for him, and we just kind of see the Steve Martin's taking this all in. But that's when they cut back to reality and they need one more out to win the game, and Kevin unfortunately misses the pop fly and the team immediately turns against them. So then Gil has a new nightmare as we see Kevin has climbed the roof of this building and is shooting a rifle at people. Yeah, it's based on the clock tower shops that happened a few years earlier. What does he shout? My dad? Uh? Oh god, I can't remember, but like he's like, Kevin, I I told you, like so's it's gonna be okay. Hey, that's a nice shot.

43:07 That's a good shot he made. He's holding a bullhorn and the bullhorn gets hit by a bullet. He goes, great shot and he turns to the cops and he's like, it's important to positive reinforce them, and he also starts singing the diarrhea song to the megaphone to come back. So at the how did that diarrhea song go? Oh God? And I have the page still up? No, I'm just kidding three minutes of it in this in this episode already. So at the Huffingers, Nathan finds out that Susan poked a hole in her diaphragm because he takes her diaphragm and pours water through it, showing her that he knows. Well, I mean, that's not a very smooth move. Take it from me, your lifestyle coach here at do you even movie? It's not okay to trap people in a pregnancy? M hmm, it isn't. It's not so Susan wants to have it.

So I was thinking, Mom, if it's okay, I could go stay with dad. This scene broke my goddamn heart. Yeah, this is hard. Do you Even? Movie will be right back, welcome back to do You Even movie? So she's like, you know, well, if you want to go stay with your father, you know, I'll give you his number, and she's like, he's probably at the office right now. So we see Gary call his dad and we see him ask for his father, and at first his father thinks that he's another son. Yeah, and he's like, no, Dad, it's against Gary, your other son. He literally says that, and that's what he tells him. You know, I was thinking, you know, maybe I could come stay with you for a bit. And he's like, oh, at least like, you know, two months, And we hear silence and he's like, oh, okay, hangs up the phone and that's when he tells his mom that he does not think that staying with him would be a good idea right now. And we and Helen watches this in horror and I mean, yeah, well she in my opinion, she watches it with a like a hopeful attitude, but she just can see her son just kind of have his dreams crushed when he gets crushed. I mean she literally looks at it like shit. So she,

46:02 you know, tries to rush to him, but Gary runs out of the house. So then we cut to Kevin's birthday party, which is in full swing. Kids are having a great time, Steve Martin showing the kid's magic tricks. The adults are talking and one of the one of my favorite scenes of this is Susan and Patty arrive at the party with Nathan, and Patty is encouraged by Susan to go play with Justin because Justin's just in the front yard spinning around like a kid. Yeah, just spinning in circles because it's fun. And Patty is like, you know, well, what's he doing. She's like, he's having fun, and she's like, that's fun. And Nathan, in his dickish move is like, I don't think so, how would you know you was spinning circles? So Gil traumatizes her then because Patty comes over as he's doing the thumb magic trick of removing his thumb and Patty is traumatized by it and runs to her father. Ure's the ever loving shit out of her, Which I love that because that, to me suggested that she deeply lacks imagination. Yeah, because Nathan literally looks at Stee Martin and he's like, nice, It's like, dude, it's a freaking it's a party. Kids. It's this, you know, it's it's fucking gonna get it right on the camera. It's this. It's fucking this. So Susan confronts Nathan about Patty's situation, and Susan reminisces is about their earlier times when Nathan was, you know, really in love with her and then their passion was big, and that she always thought that he would be a good father. But you know, asking him if he thinks he's doing this right, and Nathan, you know, he's like, you know, well, Patty's gonna be prepared for life and she's gonna be smart, and Susan just kind of walks off. She she needs to go vent to uh the other family. So that's when Gil tries to burst a piniata. So he gets

47:34 the kids ready for a pinata, has all of them beat it throughout their separate turns, and then we see he has not broken it. So Gil take a swing at it, yeah, and still can't break it, whipping it and beating it, throws it to the ground, starts beating it, and then we cut back to one of the funniest shots where he's literally sawing it in half. Yeah, he has a hacksaw and he's trying to cut it in half. So there's a mix up of the party because Kevin comes in and he's like, you know, where's Cowboy Dan? And that's when the doorbell rings and a stripper arrives. We makes she's she's a stripper because she even says she is, Well, I think maybe you're being a little judgmental, And that's when we find out that the party place screwed up the because it's one of my favorite lines. They screwed up the notes for who was supposed to go to who because apparently the guy Cowboy Dan showed up to where the stripper was supposed to be and got beaten, so he's so he's not gonna make it. So Kevin's like, you know, Cowboy Dan's not coming, and Gil, in the most sweetest and sentimental moment, is like, no, Cowboy Dan will be here. And that's when we see Gil has dressed up as a cowboy and he is Cowboy Gill entertaining the kids, telling them violent stories. Well they just love it. He's like, I shot a hole in him this big, and the bigger the hole gets, the more the kids are like cheering. He's like, and their guts wherever they're lifting their guts roll him. They love it. He's like, that's what I do. I blow a big hole in somebody and then I step in their guts and the kids are just like yeah, hell yeah. And that's when he starts doing ballued animals. He's like, here's your lower intestine, which is Steve Marton, by the way, was is a real life magician. So you see him do blue animal on the movie like he and he's really good at it. You ever notice how weird he looks when he

49:05 smiles. Yeah, it's the only thing that gets me. I get weird out of vis want to watch smiles. He just looks like he's so uncomfortable. You ever seen the thriller he did in the early two thousands called Novacane. No, he plays a dentist that gets involved in a murder. Really, dude, it's good. It's weird. It's good though, but he he doesn't really and you never brought that to me. I haven't, dude. That movie just came into my brain just now when you said the smiling thing, because the cover is him with like with a mouth open and do it and like doing the dental work, and he's just smiling, and it's creepy. Okay, so we might have to check down to track down Novacane. So he wins the party over, like the kids have water gun fight with him. And the last thing he does is he brings out to Kevin's cake. But of course he's riding a horse while he does it, and Karen walks over and she's like, you know, will you please get off the horse and he's like, no, no, I've got to I've got to make my exit. So he's like, you know, I'll see your kids later, rides off on the horse, only for the horse to jump the hedge and knock him off quite a fall. Luckily he didn't break his neck. So that's when we see later that night that Kevin is in bed and he asked his dad, you know, hey, dad, do you think I can come work with you? And he's like, well you want to do that? He's like, so I can see you every day.

50:14 So Kevin's as happy as can be. Like the party went off with that hitch. Yeah, it was a really wonderful little moment. And that's when we cut to a dentist office as we see a window smashed and we see a person go into the office and just start trashing it completely. And Helen then rushes into her home, calling out Gary's name, breaking into his room because the one thing is that Gary has a padlock on his door to keep everybody out. Yeah, padlock on the outside, which I you know, well, but I want to mention when they show the scene where the dentist office is just being smashed in pieces, it's done POVV. Yeah, so you don't see who's doing it. Yeah, And I got the sense that they were trying to make us think maybe it was the mom the mom for a minute, but then that gets dashed pretty quickly. Yeah, because otherwise why not show who's doing it? Yeah, but that was just a thought I had as I was watching. As I was like, are they trying to make us think Diane Wete did it? Which I wouldn't be I mean, you know, what's the saying about, you know, a woman's scorn?

And luckily Todd comes into the room. Well she's referring to the birds and the birds and the bees. Yes, And that's when Tod comes into the room and he's like, hey, has anybody seen Julian And she's like, your wife is still in school. She has cheerleading practice at school. He's like, bitchin. So that's when Todd goes out of the room and Julie uh uh yeah. Helen goes after him and she looks at him for a second and that's when you see that she's gonna send Todd in there to talk to

Yeah, the best part is it was it was in my teen years that it was literally a house full of women, which is the most awful time to to not have a male figure around, is as you're going through puberty and everything. So he basically says like he told me this, and I told him, Hey, that's what little dudes do. And he was really happy, smile happy, and yeah, that's all. He says, like, yeah, I didn't even the little dude had teeth so good. It's a really great little moment where it's like he just needed to know that he wasn't a fucking degenerate.

So Frank goes to the garage the next day and he finds that his car is missing and that there's no Larry. So he then goes to a Chuck E Cheese place where he's meeting up with Gil, Karen and the kids, and Kevin has been bullied by a kid that apparently took his quarters. And also Kevin realizes that he left his retainer on the table and now it's no longer there, and he just starts freaking out, making a scene in the restaurant. Now, I'm gonna tell you something right now. Yea losing a retainer and when you're killed, that's no joke, did you. I did have a retainer, but I had, I had. I had a couple of things. I had the one you had to crank with a key and whatnot. And you had a pallet spreader. Yeah, well you can't take that out. You can't take it out. But no, oh no, it was a retainer ship I forgot for a something. Yeah, I when I when I got my bracest off, I had my retainer. And yeah, I did lose it a couple of times. Oh my god, I've screamed at not lost, as in like it was gone, it had fallen behind the bed and I did

Yeah. And they have a nice dialogue where they're talking about, you know, why is he so nervous? While Martin is like rubbing his hands like crazy. Gil is like, you know, he's not getting better, is he? And she's like, what did you think that coaching little league and throwing him an amazing birthday party was going to fix it?

I could see that. Yeah, thank goodness that didn't follow me in your adulthood, not at all. Yeah, and you're welcome, hurry friend. For ten years, I've picked up on things, but also you've picked up on things of me. I try not to, so try to forget. So Frank takes Cool home and he or take Yeah, is taking Cool home with his wife, and that's when he pulls up and sees that Larry is putting his car back, trying to make it seem like it was there the entire time. Yeah, and that's when he's like, take Cool in the house. So he goes in the garage and he goes to shut the door because Larry's like, you know, hey, I was taking out to get appraise to know how much work you put into it.

He's like, you know what, what what would be so bad about you getting a job, And that's when Larry reminds him that, you know, the one thing you told me as a kid was to make my mark, make my mark. I'm sorry, I'm not Gil. And that's when Roe Barbs has this close up and you just kind of see him realize that.

And she's like, can I show you to you first? Yeah, and this is great. So she takes the flash cards and the first one says, don't say anything, yep, I love you. You're beautiful.

Yeah, he was supposed to start a painting business. But his brothers also wanted him to race, and they also kind of wanted him to be a ship to his wife. So uh, this reveals that he's actually been racing again, and that's not good. So now there's the big fight, big fight. Todd goes to leave, and that's when Julie's like, you know, no, I'll leave, like you know, I can't believe I'm gonna have a baby with you. And that's when Gary is like, what's up with all the women in this house? She says, I'm not gonna have your baby if you're gonna be like to be like this, And that's when Gary's like, what's up all the women's house? Driving all the men out, and so that he goes and that a baby, and she's like, I went to Woodstock. I can't be a grandma. And one of the best things is mister Bowman looks at her and he's like, I was a Woodstock too, and she goes, I knew you look familiar and takes a shot. That's it's good stuffs, so good. Yeah.

They apparently do not see that he's put in the work and they're gonna give it to another guy, and he's so he just goes on and quits his job. He fucks right off, goes back home and he tells Karen, and that's when Karen says, you know, well, are you sure he can't get it back? And he's like, I mean, I pretty much told them I'm done. And she's like, I'm pregnant. So she confesses that she's pregnant. And now Gil and her have a fight about the financial situation, and he makes one of the most ridiculous comments, which is women have choices, men have responsibilities. Well, I don't think that's a ridiculous statement, because no, because men are generally speaking, extremely responsible for most things that happen. I will say that I'm not saying that that means women are without responsibilities, without requirements, without that's not the point. Well, but the reason is from Steve Martin's character standpoint. You look at what he's doing. Yeah, he's working this job super long hours.

So he's been working his ass off and doing Little League and looking after the son, trying to make sure, he's okay, And from his perspective, his wife is getting to do more of the of a relaxed way of doing things. Yeah, And Karen's like, you know, okay, Well then if that's the case, then you have the baby, which I do like that you get fat for eight months and have them, have them suck on your breasts until they hurt and stuff like that. And she basically asked me, do you want me to get an abortion? He's like, oh, well, that's that's your choice. You know, that would be always be a woman's choice. That has to be a office. I love that response is so good. She just goes, what are you running for Congress?

She just lookss, what are you running for congressgress? So that's when, uh, the scene is cut short because Gil realizes that he's got to go get ready for Little League, and he shouts also to Kevin. He's like, Kevin, get your glove and he's like, I thought you said I have to go. I know I said that, but I've changed my mind. Yeah, And she does mention, she's like, do you have to go? Like couldn't you stay? And he's like, my whole life is half too, to which I thought was a beautiful punctuation on how he's feeling. Yeah. I guess I'm not saying that he wasn't being a bit uh pig headed, and he wasn't being a bit selfish. Yeah, But from his perspective, it's just everything is you have to do this, and you have to do this, and you have to this and you have to this and if you don't do it, nobody else will. And so I feel like that is the perfect punctuation to the entire fight. Absolutely is so. As he's at his as he got the warm up practice for the game, Frank shows up wanting to speak to Gil and he is tells him that he needs his advice as a father. This is quite a scene too, because he's startled when he's asked for advice, and then when he says like, I know you didn't think I was a very good father, sitty father. He's like, thanks for thanks for not arguing. Yeah, thanks for him for not changing. So he tells him about and he needs to make a decision on the money, and Martin asked me, you know, do you have the money? And he's like, I have the money. He's like, I've got it.

Why is it that he does he knows why he doesn't think so highly of him, and he's like, you know, what, what did I do wrong? No they thought he had huge yeah, that he thought he had polio for a week, and he said he hated him for that. He admits he resented him for that because he was scared. He didn't know what to do and that's not for him. He hated him for in a way doing that. And during this scene, ro Barbs and Martin have gone off into the duckout and at first like they're sitting next to each other, and when Robarb starts speaking about this polio thing, he goes over to the side and is just leaning against this fence and he's just beside himself.

No, he says. He says, you worry too much, worry too much. Ever since you were a kid, you worry too much, which again clicks with me. I cannot I think that there is a real I feel like there's not enough conversation about anxious children, about little anxious children, yeah, and how to deal with anxious children is really challenging. This is like a pretty personal example, but I feel like it's worthwhile. I had a friend who had some children and she wanted them that she bought them bicycles. Yeah, and the little girl just could not learn how to write a biok just could not. And one night I was over there having dinner with all of them, and before dinner was ready, they were playing on their bikes and this little girl she just could not ride her bike. And I noticed that, like her mom was getting mad, you know, not yelling at her anything, but just going like, come on, like just go like stop being afraid that you're gonna fall.

Ten minutes later she was riding her bike up and down that driveway, and I was like, all she needed was somebody to acknowledge that she was just so scared. And that's the other thing is is anxious children are often confused with fearful children, because when you're scared, I mean, when you're anxious, you're scared. And I was.

My dad was always mad at me because I didn't want to do something if I was afraid of it constantly, and he used to always say in front of me, with my little brothers and sisters, he would like pick them up and swing them around and be like, see, you know, my kids are fearless in front of him. But I remember that as a kid being being told like, oh, your fears are pointless, and it's like that doesn't connect. It doesn't No, it doesn't mean. And I'll give you props because you know, we we've been friends for ten years now, and it wasn't until it wasn't until you know, probably what about five six years ago that you were like, I think you have anxiety. And I mean that was that was literally the first time that anybody had really said that to me. I think it's actually only been about three has it been about three? I feel like it was post COVID. Yeah, at a convention that we went to because we spent the whole weekend together. Yeah, that was pre COVID. That wasn't post that was okay because Wasteland happened and then COVID and then COVID shut it down.

I remember that was a good one that that you were like, I, you're overthinking this because you're just anxious. And I've had that feeling for a long time. So with you saying the identifying of anxiousness and children, I think that is something that is absolutely and it's tricky. You know how anxious you are when your kid can come down to lots of things. Like when I was growing up, there was a lot of change all the time, and I think that that made me very anxious. We moved around a lot, you know, I had a dad, then I didn't have a dad.

I just would pick up on like the things were tight, we we lived, we lived tough for a while long time. And but like that's the kind of thing that people don't realize. Like kids can pick up on that. And I'm not again not trying toot my own horn, but especially intelligent children tend to be anxious. Yeah, because if you're if you're if you're developing a little bit faster, that means that you can understand more things to be concerned about's earlier. I've often said that being a smart kid is not necessarily a blessing.

They're only needing one more out to win, and then it would be their first winever, their first win ever, and of course the pitch is thrown, the ball is hit up in the air as we see Kevin is having the ball come right towards him.

And they make the catch, the game is good, and Martin does the most amazing celebratory run run crawl. Yeah no, he's just like celebrating by like running like goofy get right in Clint Howard's face. Yeah, yeah, oh yeah. It was so good. So I was hoping he was gonna turn to Clint Howard just be like who had sex with you?

They'll understand they're getting uh something nothing. Yeah, And he tells them that Monday morning he's going to start him at the business. He's going to teach him the family business. There's a plumbing business, and that in a couple of years when he's retired, he's going to pass the business off to him. And he's only going to do this if he agrees to go to a gambler's anonymous meeting. He'll keep paying those bills. Yeah, as long as he's working and at the Gambler's anonymous, he'll keep going. And that's when the scene really breaks my heart. Larry agrees with one quick caveat. He says, what if what is a this? I just got a call from an associate in Chile and platinum is the big thing right now. I'll go out there for two weeks. If I don't make it, I'll come back and Monday we'll put the Frank Buckman plan into business. And his dad just kind of size and says okay, okay. And I love that moment because that's the moment that he really sounds so awful. But that's when he really realizes the man his son is exactly. And I mean and that is even said more in this next scene, because so you know, he's he's like, you know, I may need a little bit of money. He's like two thousand, grab you. And he's like, I can't remember what he says, but he says something so SCHALARMI that he's just it's just like, yeah, you would take your dad's money as much as you can get it. So

Yeah and and and that's again to me, that is the moment that his dad's really accepting and learning, like, this is the man your son is. And this is the scene that makes me cry every time, and I totally did. Cool finds Frank on the porch and he comes out and he's like, you know, my dad left in a hurry. And he's like, yeah, I know. And he's like, is he coming back? And Roebarbs takes a pause and he goes no, and he's like, you know, do you want to stay with us for a little bit? And Cool just lights up and he's like yeah, cause he's been having fun. He's been spending all this time with his grandma who's nice to him and stuff. And of course Frank is like, good, me too.

1:20:04 So the next morning, we see Susan at her school as Nathan shows up and he's begging her to come back home. The misses her, he loves her, and Susan tells him, your words do not solve anything, and so she goes back into her classroom because she says that he's not capable of change, so she goes in teaching, and that's when Nathan comes in and he starts singing close to You by the Carpenters, and he just continues to serenade her with it as all the kids are looking on in confusion, and then eventually the girls in the classroom all start to be like, wow, yeah, and my favorite line is Nathan, we're trying to keep these kids off drugs. Yeah, that was my favorite. Yeah, We're trying to keep these kids off drugs. So that's when she tells the class that that was their wedding song. He continues serenading her, and that's when he makes it up to her at the board and he tells her he loves her and that he wants her to come home. They kiss, everything's all good.

1:20:46 The class erupts into applause, and that's when we cut to a racetrack where we see Todd is getting ready for his race, and Gary, who has dressed up as his mechanic, is looking over the car cigarette and we see Helen show up and Julie is like, you know, can you go talk to him, like you can you tell him this is crazy and she's like, you know, I'm just here. So then the race starts, Todd loses control of the car, crashes into the side of it, and the car flips rolls onto its side. Helen, Julian, and Gary race onto the track. The race crew freeze Todd from the wreckage. He's fine. They escort him to a truck and that's when Helen is Julie is walking off. She's like, I can't do this. Helen grabs Julian. She goes, hey, this is marriage. Now come and get in the truck. Yeah, I love that. This is marriage. Get in the truck. So that's when we see them all get in the truck and Helen reminds Todd that he's important because Todd, one of the guy comes up to him.

1:21:30 He's like, hey, you should crash every week. The crowd loved it. And he's like, great, they love it. I'm just crashed him. And she's like, no, you're a very important person and you're gonna be the father of my grandchild. This is your a very important person. So Julian Todd makeup Gary tells Helen that she that she saved the marriage, and Helen tells him, you know, the odds aren't good, and Gary questions, you know why she would do that? She thinks that, and that's when he tells him that's what moms do. Whatever you kids want, moms will do everything in our power to get it. Yeah, and Gary tells her that he's glad that she's going out with mister Bowman and that he's happy to see that she's happy, and she's like, you know, I could get used to you saying this often. Well, he says, he treats you nice, and you deserve to have somebody treat you nice. So back at the house, Gil and Karen are getting ready for one of Taylor's plays, and that's when Gil tells Karen that he really loves her, and she's like, I know, and he's like, no, no, I really love you. Yeah, that's a really beautiful moment. And he also says that, you know, Dave was so happy when I called him. He gave the off for me a corner office and a raise, admits his happiness and like he's riding high from the game, and she reminds him, you know, life's messy, but we get through it. So that's when Graham comes in and she says, you know, your grandfather took me on a roller coaster once and talks about how it excited her, it scared her at everything because of the ups and downs and downs, and you know, I was excited, I was scared. She goes, you know, I really wanted to ride it again. Some people like to ride the Merry Go Round, but that just goes round and round.

You're back at the station, So that's that's when you see Karen really get moved by my grand's words. And Martin's like, you know, oh well, that was just such great advice for her, and she's like, you know, I happen to love that advice and throws I love roller coasters and throws the ear at him that she was sewing for Taylor's play. So then we cut to the play, and the play is exactly like a children's play where some kids that are doing great and some they're not. And then as they're taking away the sisters, ya sister playing Dobe, the youngest child, just getting He gets mad because he thinks they're they're beating like his sisters, so he gets up on the stage to help her Chaos and Susan. At first, Steve Martin is like horrifying, mortified, Yeah, yeah, and then he realizes that most people are just laughing about There are a couple of people who are like they're ruining the play, but most people are just like, it's just a kid's play.

1:23:45 And then in Steve Martin's mind and through the visuals of the play of everything he's seeing, we start hearing roller coaster sounds. We started hearing the roller coaster go over the track, people screaming, and then the roller coaster comes to a cease, and he gets this smile on his face and just starts laughing with everyone. And he looks over to his wife and she has the biggest smile, happiest smile, and puts his hand on her baby bump. Well yeah, not not that that's there yet, but well, you know, they share a really sweet moment and that's when they smile at each other. And then we cut to a hospital room as we hear the doctor say it's a girl. Oh sorry, I got him, I got him kids, so good. We hear the doctor say it's a girl, and that's when the nurses like, you know, well you should go tell the whole family. They're out in the lobby waiting on you. Now, important thing about this part is we do not know who the mother is or the father of the baby, because keep in mind, we have Julie that's pregnant, we have Karen that's pregnant, and I think that's the only shoe yeah yeah, oh oh, and Nathan and Susan because they want a baby, oh oh yeah. Yeah. So that's when we cut out to the lobby and we see everybody that we expected to be in the delivery room, and that's when it's revealed that Bowman says it's a girl, revealing that him and Helen had a baby to Yeah. So, so the mother who was kind of like burnout on it all ends up coming, you know, becoming a mother yet again with her new husband or boyfriend or whatever who is kind to her.

1:25:12 And through that, through that first visual of the lobby, we see Gil and Karen have their new baby already. We see Julie and Todd have their baby already they look like a little over year old. Yeah, be a little over year old. And that's when the family starts celebrating. Of course, Frank's passing out cigars to everybody, even the kids. I love when he removes the snow smoking split cigar. And we see Nathan playing with Patty like a normal kid, like he's got these ears on and he's just like playing with her and being goofy. And we see that Frank rips down the no smoking sign lighting up. Gil's changing the new baby. Julie sits with Todd as he's holding the baby, and then Helen holds her baby. We see her smile, and that, my friends, is the end of nineteen eighty nine's parenthood. And I know what you're thinking, why not a happy ending. It's such a good movie, such a movie. He is a good film. You want to hear some fun trivia? I do not too bad, damn it. So the budget is twenty million on this.

Between Ron Howard, the producer Brian Grazer, and the writers low and Babbelo, there were fifteen kids in their families, which allowed them to base the movie all off of their personal experiences of becoming parents.

His daughter had also thrown up on him after a roller coaster, of course, and Brian had the photo mix up story, which was that him and his girlfriend had gone out to a mountain cabin retreat and they'd taken a camera and apparently they had gone to develop the pictures and her His girlfriend's father was a big proprietor of RV parks because he would take pictures of where he wanted to place his RV when they went on vacation. Oh lord, So he goes to pick up the photos and it's nothing but r v's and then the father did not speak to him for a year.

1:27:33 Fair enough because the father got those focus Wow the movie. This was the first movie filmed at Universal Studios, Florida before it opened on June seventh, nineteen ninety. Howard got the idea to start the film from a horrific fifteen hour flight from New Zealand with his family, where his son had puked on him and he did not have a change of clothes. Kids were running all over the airport as well as the plane, and he was so frustrated that when he got in the car, he calmed himself down and started craft the story points in his head as he was driving home. Geez, talk about turning a chicken shit into chicken salad. Dan Ackroyd, Michael Keaton, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Tom Selleck, Billy Crystal, tim Allen were all considered for the role of Gil Buckman. I could see Keaton, especially Tim Allen, Tim Allen, Robin Williams. Ron Williams might be good, but maybe too much. I don't know, I don't know. Jeff Goldbloom turned down both roles of Gil Buckman and Larry Buckman.

Martin's famous run of the baseball game after his son Keed makes the catch was a one take with no rehearsal. During filming, the cast became obsessed with playing the murder game, a game in which one person who is the murderer, has to find a subtle way to kill the other players simply by looking at them without giving themselves away. As the murderer. And they would wink. This is very apparent in the dinner scene where everyone is sitting around the table, when if you watch everyone's eye movement, it's obvious they are playing the game. Huh, I've never heard of that game. They talked of it on the bonus features, and apparently Roe Barb's was the best one at it because he would give the full and sometimes nobody would catch it except for who actually got killed. Oh wow, yeah, okay. So, as originally written, Karen would smoke a joint every night. Mary Steinbergen argued that this was out of the character for a woman strong enough to confront her family's problems head on. The filmmakers agreed and change the script. Although gil Oltzer is a former marijuana user. In the parent Teacher meeting, they're having a meeting about Kevin, in which the scene where he says that she would smoke as a chimney in college. So traces of Karen's pie had passed, you still make it into the screenplay. You heard it here first. Mary steamberge and says, if you medicate in any way to deal with your problems, you're weak pathetic. Roe Barbin Holst's famous scene in the garage with the car was not originally so intimate and lengthy. After one take, loll and bobbily requested Howard send the two back to their hotels for several days, apologizing that they did not realize how good their chemistry was on screen, so they went back and

They talked about that in the bonus features as well, like they actually went up to Hols and Roebarbs and were just like, we had no idea how good you guys were gonna be. So if you guys want to go back, we're gonna beef up your rush. Hehy. We really thought you guys were gonna be shit. Yeah, so we was. We was figured you're gonna be bad, but he was actually good, so we're gonna fix it. Steve Martin at the time of filming was not a father. He did not become a father until two thousand and seven. Steinbergen actually recalls the time that he called her before they started filming, and he was legitimately nervous about being around kids. Of course, the first day they're filming around the kids, Martin was the biggest celebrity with the children could not get away from five children at the time for the most part, and he could not say no. He kept doing magic tricks and kept doing songs. So that was one of the things she said was that, you know, he was great with the kids.

It's probably it's probably a bye it's a by it, But I mean, it's just not quite in my brain a quintessential film yet. I get that. Yeah, but that's because I've not seen it many many times. But now I probably call it a by it. I think Parenthood is a buy it for me as well. It's one of those films you appreciate the older you get, because how would you know you saw three years ago? I know. That's what I'm saying is that I knew about it, and I knew that it kind of wasn't for me, and I feel like if I had seen it earlier, I would not have as big appreciation for it as I do. Yeah, you were stupid, Yeah, very stupid. If you go and expecting comedy, you're not going to be prepared by the subject better than the realness. The movie throws it at you.

1:31:41 In my opinion, Sure, the cast is a symbol. The cast a symbol for this film is perfect. The storytelling is done with the craft that still impresses me. And how smooth all the stories intertwining and go throughout the film as well. Yeah, they blend together very well. And the final three minutes is some of the most fantastically sweet, perfect ending you could ask for in a film. All Right, I could agree with that. So, as we like to do on the show, we like to end with a couple of recommendations. I have two this week. First one is Mister Mom from nineteen eighty three, starring Michael Keaton. After he suddenly laid off, a husband switches roles with his wife as she returns to workforce and becomes and he becomes a stay at home dad, taking care of three young children and job he has no clue how to do. Second choice is Little Miss Sunshine from two thousand and six. A family determined to get their younger daughter into the finals of the beauty pageant take a country trip in their VW bus. If you have not seen a Little Miss Sunshine, I cannot recommend it enough. I revisited it a couple of years ago and it was even better than I remembered it. He never seen it, you've never seen it?
