Mercy Christmas (2017)
Henrique and David carve into Mercy Christmas (2017), Ryan Nelson’s pitch-black independent Christmas horror comedy starring Steven Hubbell, David Ruprecht and Gwen Van Dam. Hubbell plays Michael Briskett, a lonely, relentlessly agreeable office worker who loves the holiday even as his boss Andy exploits him. When Andy’s sister Cindy invites Michael to Christmas dinner, the promise of belonging collapses: his eggnog is drugged, he wakes among prisoners in a basement and learns that the smiling family intends to put him on the menu.
The review maps the cannibal household from Ruprecht’s patriarch Abe and Van Dam’s formidable grandmother to the relatives who normalize murder as family tradition. Michael initially seems too passive to survive, but captivity places him beside Katherine and other victims who need solidarity more than swagger. Henrique and David praise Hubbell for making Briskett’s decency compelling, then trace how workplace abuse, holiday loneliness and literal consumption converge as he finally refuses to keep serving people who see him only as something useful.
Nelson directed and co-wrote the film with Beth Levy Nelson, turning a modest first feature into a sharp mixture of gore, awkward comedy and class resentment. The hosts highlight the cruel absurdity of Andy still demanding office work from Michael after his kidnapping, as well as the increasingly cathartic resistance inside the house. The contained locations and small ensemble keep the danger intimate even when the bloodshed escalates. Katherine’s resolve and Michael’s belated self-respect push the finale beyond a simple escape plot, giving the underdog violence a satisfying emotional purpose.
Henrique and David argue that Mercy Christmas deserves far more attention among holiday horror fans. Its cannibal premise is brutal, but the payoff is hopeful enough to reward viewers willing to endure the family’s cruelty. They place it in the upper tier of Christmas horror comedy, recommend a rent from one host; the other suggests streaming for casual horror viewers and buying for dedicated genre fans. The result preserves their original enthusiasm for an underseen film while expanding the characters, creators, themes and independent-production context.

You Even? Movie? Hosted by
filmmaker Enrique Kuto and movie aficionado David Denyer.
11
00:01:53.280 --> 00:02:07.000
Spoiler alert, Hey my friends,
it's time for yet another holiday rendition
12
00:02:07.719 --> 00:02:10.000
of Do You Even? Movie?
I'm, of course your host Enrique Kuto
13
00:02:10.120 --> 00:02:17.400
here with my good buddy and co
host double D. I forget David Denoyer
14
00:02:19.159 --> 00:02:23.840
here, and we are we are
extra jolly. Yes we are, because
15
00:02:23.960 --> 00:02:30.840
not only are we full of good
cheer and joy to the world, but
16
00:02:30.960 --> 00:02:37.400
also just generalized holiday stress absolutely which
would it make sense if that wasn't the
17
00:02:37.439 --> 00:02:42.000
case, Absolutely would not. I
mean it's it's kind of one of those
18
00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:45.039
things where we love Christmas so much, but because of that, we we
19
00:02:45.120 --> 00:02:49.360
kind of throw ourselves into it every
year to where it's like when we we
20
00:02:49.400 --> 00:02:52.319
get to our time where we get
to watch movies together, it's just completely
21
00:02:52.400 --> 00:02:54.639
us uploading. Uh yeah, no, unloading is a good way to put
22
00:02:54.639 --> 00:02:59.000
it. In fact, you know
what? Real quick? Yeah, hey,
23
00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:02.520
editor, let's throw in something a
little Christmasy underneath. Okay, I
24
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:08.120
want to tell a story to start
the show, a Christmas story. Years
25
00:03:08.159 --> 00:03:15.680
ago, there was a young man
named David, unfortunately, and David was
26
00:03:15.719 --> 00:03:22.680
having a very difficult Christmas season,
yes, for he hated his boss and
27
00:03:22.840 --> 00:03:28.560
also probably himself, yeah a little
bit. But David had a friend,
28
00:03:29.360 --> 00:03:35.319
a friend named a name no one
can pronounce when reading it. Perhaps it
29
00:03:35.360 --> 00:03:40.759
was Enrique, perhaps it was Heinrich, perhaps it was Honriq. Blue can
30
00:03:40.919 --> 00:03:49.360
say. But one day David came
to however you say his name, and
31
00:03:49.479 --> 00:03:53.240
said, I know, bro,
we're supposed to watch a movie together,
32
00:03:53.639 --> 00:04:00.439
but I'm just not feeling very christmasy. And his best buddy fell felt that
33
00:04:00.280 --> 00:04:06.919
in his core being because both of
these dumbasses love Christmas so very much.
34
00:04:08.039 --> 00:04:14.280
Whew. So what did he do
but say, you come over right now
35
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:19.879
and you sit down. We're watching
Eaton Alive aka magyati Vv, to which
36
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:26.199
David said, but that's not a
Christmas movie, to which Enrique said,
37
00:04:26.759 --> 00:04:30.399
it's got a green jungle, it's
got red blood. That's Christmas and Santa,
38
00:04:30.839 --> 00:04:34.360
and there is a Santa clause at
the beginning, which he didn't remember
39
00:04:34.399 --> 00:04:40.360
at first. So they watched that
film and they had a laugh. And
40
00:04:40.439 --> 00:04:44.680
they watched that film and felt squeek
queasy when the real animal death occurred.
41
00:04:44.759 --> 00:04:49.279
Yes, but in the end,
laughter was had and Christmas was saved,
42
00:04:49.759 --> 00:04:55.319
was saved in a way it really
was by Joe Demato, correct by I
43
00:04:55.360 --> 00:05:00.720
don't know no, no, Magyatta
viv is lendsay right, but no,
44
00:05:00.279 --> 00:05:03.639
yeah we we one time we're not
feeling the Christmas season, and I made
45
00:05:03.639 --> 00:05:10.160
mainyati vv become a Christmas movie.
Since now that being said, that transitions
46
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:15.000
moderately well into Mercy Christmas, which
if you haven't seen Mercy Christmas Kids,
47
00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:17.720
you need to watch it. It's
readily available on a ton of streaming services
48
00:05:17.959 --> 00:05:21.639
for you to enjoy or to own
yourself on DVD or Blu ray. Yes,
49
00:05:23.120 --> 00:05:28.839
and uh. It is a holiday
film that features merriment, lights,
50
00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:35.639
lots of family dinners, also cannibalism, masochism, violence. Really, the
51
00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:39.720
only thing they didn't touch on that
I'm kind of surprised they didn't is there's
52
00:05:39.720 --> 00:05:43.600
no incests at all. You know, I'm honestly shocked they didn't just have
53
00:05:43.639 --> 00:05:46.800
the brother and sister fucking kiss kiss
fuck us. But that being said,
54
00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:51.040
phenomenal movie. Yeah, I just
we we have just finished watching it,
55
00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:55.600
which I think we may have skipped
it last year. I can't remember.
56
00:05:55.639 --> 00:05:59.199
I think we did. We did. It's a little heavy sometimes to watch,
57
00:05:59.279 --> 00:06:02.439
but but this year we had to
bring it back because we had to
58
00:06:02.439 --> 00:06:06.360
talk about it on this podcast because
this is one of many films that Dave
59
00:06:06.360 --> 00:06:13.079
and I have enjoyed that is so
underappreciated. I want to say so much
60
00:06:13.120 --> 00:06:19.360
so that Mercy Christmas is in a
top echelon of Christmas horror movies. Yeah,
61
00:06:19.399 --> 00:06:25.920
and to be not even ten years
old and in that space because it
62
00:06:25.959 --> 00:06:30.120
does things, I'm actually shocker,
humble Bragg. I'm actually reading a book
63
00:06:30.160 --> 00:06:36.319
about Christmas horror movies are the title
of which I can't remember. Have a
64
00:06:36.319 --> 00:06:41.079
Scary Little Christmas. I think,
scary Little Christmas I think is You're right,
65
00:06:41.399 --> 00:06:45.800
But it is like an academic book
about Christmas horror movies. So it's
66
00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:47.720
not just like, yeah, this
will Goublets plants, although it is a
67
00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:51.199
little bit of that. It is
a movie about all of the Christmas horror
68
00:06:51.199 --> 00:06:55.759
films and why they're Christmas. Ye. And one thing it mentions that this
69
00:06:55.800 --> 00:07:00.000
film has heavily is there are kind
of two kinds of Christmas horror movie.
70
00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:03.160
Christmas horror movies that take place at
Christmas and use that as a setting,
71
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:11.480
and films that take the Christmas season
and use it to kind of weeedle into
72
00:07:11.560 --> 00:07:16.480
your nostalgia center and kind of get
you to take your expectations of a Christmas
73
00:07:16.480 --> 00:07:19.600
movie, yeah, and run with
it in a scary way. And this
74
00:07:19.720 --> 00:07:26.480
film absolutely is the latter and not
the former. Yeah, it is a
75
00:07:26.600 --> 00:07:30.560
Christmas e movie about Christmas and about
family, but it is a disgusting,
76
00:07:31.160 --> 00:07:36.319
nasty, mean spirited horror film.
Harrowing is a good word for it.
77
00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:42.759
And we discovered this just from our
constant hunt I mean or for a holiday
78
00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:46.279
horror and just holiday in general.
But especially holiday horror. That is one
79
00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:48.759
thing that I think we really need
to make our listeners clear on is that
80
00:07:49.399 --> 00:07:55.319
when Enrique says that we're Christmas fans, we will literally scour your streaming services
81
00:07:55.319 --> 00:07:59.199
insert here name for any title we
can come up, whether it's new,
82
00:07:59.240 --> 00:08:01.480
whether it's old, or we just
haven't seen it. I mean, that's
83
00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:05.160
how we came across such titles as
like a Mother Crampis and Red Christmas,
84
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:09.839
which if you ever won an anti
abortion Christmas field, which it both doesn't
85
00:08:09.399 --> 00:08:13.199
Red Christmas, and and and and
that's how we found this one. Yeah,
86
00:08:13.240 --> 00:08:16.480
exactly. In fact, this one
i'd never heard a word about.
87
00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:20.839
No, I think you found it
or did I find it? We found
88
00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:22.439
it together on on on Prime,
I believe. I think I think we
89
00:08:22.439 --> 00:08:26.959
were just going I think I just
searched Christmas horror. Yeah, and it
90
00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:28.199
came up. Yeah, and we
watched the trailer and it was just like,
91
00:08:28.199 --> 00:08:31.800
well that looks fun, and we
took a shot on it. Yeah,
92
00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:35.360
I mean it just this is probably
our third or fourth time watching weether.
93
00:08:35.559 --> 00:08:39.519
We were both quiet when it ended
because we couldn't believe how awesome it
94
00:08:39.720 --> 00:08:43.200
was. Yes, and I'm not
I would not say that lightly. No,
95
00:08:43.480 --> 00:08:50.600
it was awesome. This film has
everything I love in a mean spirited
96
00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:54.000
horror movie. Yeah, and something
you're going to learn about me as I
97
00:08:54.039 --> 00:09:00.440
as you listen to me enthus about
holiday movies and horror movies in general.
98
00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:03.879
Yeah, I don't mind a mean
spirited film, not at all. I
99
00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:07.240
will watch a mean spirited horror movie. But if it has no payoff,
100
00:09:07.399 --> 00:09:11.159
yeah, then it becomes kind of
hard to digest for Yeah, pardon the
101
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:13.919
pun. It's it's one of those
things where when you get into enough mean
102
00:09:13.960 --> 00:09:18.320
spirited horror films, or even just
horror films in general, the ending where
103
00:09:18.320 --> 00:09:20.200
it's like, oh, well,
good didn't prevail an evil still, it's
104
00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:22.559
like you can take those for a
little bit. But after a while,
105
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:26.159
yeah, that was edgy in like
two thousand and seven, two thousand and
106
00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:30.000
eight, two thousand and nine,
Yeah, and then everything and it was
107
00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:33.080
no longer or scared open ended where
it's just like the killer may have gotten
108
00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:37.639
away, they found a burning mask, Like yeah, well, you mean
109
00:09:37.679 --> 00:09:41.679
like in that piece of crap Halloween
two Got as daysavorite But no, no,
110
00:09:41.720 --> 00:09:46.639
in all seriousness, it's like watching
Last House on the Left without the
111
00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:50.639
last segment ye last ten minutes.
Yeah, yeah, that movie would be
112
00:09:50.720 --> 00:09:54.840
hard to take. Yeah, Like
I remember that, uh that David DeFalco
113
00:09:56.000 --> 00:10:00.039
movie. Uh ko, Chaos,
Chaos, I thank you Chaos. I
114
00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:03.159
think it was Chaos. Yeah,
that's something like that. Yeah whatever.
115
00:10:03.240 --> 00:10:05.240
It was his ripoff of Last House
on the Left, except it ended with
116
00:10:05.279 --> 00:10:09.840
the bad guys winning. Yeah,
and I was just like, Wow,
117
00:10:09.879 --> 00:10:15.240
what a pointless experience. Yeah,
And I'm I'm not here to say that
118
00:10:15.360 --> 00:10:18.320
it's a bad movie. I'm here
to say that it was not for me.
119
00:10:18.840 --> 00:10:24.120
For me, if you're going to
have characters do truly unforgivable things,
120
00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:28.919
as an audience, give us something
back, yeah, let us get revenge.
121
00:10:28.039 --> 00:10:33.559
Yes. And this movie not only
was it fearless in its mean spiritedness,
122
00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:37.679
it was fearless in creating characters that
we really feel for her about it
123
00:10:37.799 --> 00:10:43.440
and efficiently. Yes, this film
is like eighty three minutes and it absolutely
124
00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:48.879
delivers so much. Now I feel
like I've built it up an awful lot.
125
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:54.240
So Dave, throw us the pertinent
beats on Mercy Christmas. All right,
126
00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:58.000
Mercy Christmas twenty seventeen release DGE Shot
in twenty sixteen. This film is
127
00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:01.759
directed by Ryan Nelson. He has
only this one debut to his name,
128
00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:05.480
but he was directory erectorial debut.
You can't have more than one day,
129
00:11:05.519 --> 00:11:09.519
you cannot. I always make that
mistake. But I would like to point
130
00:11:09.559 --> 00:11:13.039
out in regards to his background,
he was a grip on Bad Boys two
131
00:11:13.080 --> 00:11:16.960
in two thousand and three, Wedding
Crashers in five, Real Steal in twenty
132
00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:20.799
eleven, the Avengers in twenty twelve. Then he did second unit key grip
133
00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:24.039
on Hunters, the Amazon Prime series, and he's also just recently wrapped a
134
00:11:24.120 --> 00:11:28.279
key grip on Justified, City Primeval. It would appear that he is a
135
00:11:28.360 --> 00:11:31.360
key grip for like his main gig, Yeah, and which is awesome.
136
00:11:31.559 --> 00:11:33.639
Yeah, and Justified. I haven't
watched City Premieval Love. Ye haven't either
137
00:11:33.720 --> 00:11:37.039
yet. My parents Justified fans,
but we haven't watched that yet. So
138
00:11:37.240 --> 00:11:41.879
no, But I gotta say something
right now, Ryan Nelson, I know
139
00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:48.120
you're watching his direct another film.
Yes, I look, I am a
140
00:11:48.159 --> 00:11:54.759
B movie director as my day job. Just I I if that film underperformed,
141
00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:58.759
if it did not make money for
you, it is not the film's
142
00:11:58.759 --> 00:12:03.440
fault and it is not your fault. No, you did a phenomenal job
143
00:12:03.559 --> 00:12:11.399
making a highly entertaining film that was
well directed, well thought out. Come
144
00:12:11.440 --> 00:12:13.960
back, Yes, make another movie. For the love of God. Don't
145
00:12:13.960 --> 00:12:18.159
be discouraged. That's all I want
to say. If you're feeling discouraged,
146
00:12:18.200 --> 00:12:22.200
if for some ungodly reason you're watching
or listening to this, we want you
147
00:12:22.279 --> 00:12:26.720
back. Yeah. You're a damn
fine filmmaker, absolutely, and you deserve
148
00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:31.200
all of the praise you're about to
get. So anyway, sorry to digress.
149
00:12:31.279 --> 00:12:33.120
So going back to him as well. He also wrote this with Beth
150
00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:37.919
Levy Nelson his his wife, so
they wrote this film together. This is
151
00:12:37.960 --> 00:12:41.919
a shop buy cinematographer Kenneth Neil Moore, he was a camera operator on Ten
152
00:12:41.960 --> 00:12:45.600
Items or Less in two thousand and
nine. Take Shelter in twenty eleven that
153
00:12:45.840 --> 00:12:50.000
like Michael Shannon, Oh my god, that movie is so painful and good.
154
00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:52.799
Yeah. He also did Mud in
twenty twelve, Righteous Gemstones in twenty
155
00:12:52.879 --> 00:12:58.919
nineteen, The Hunt in twenty twenty, And I want to mention Righteous Gemstones.
156
00:12:58.360 --> 00:13:03.320
That's interesting because I know for a
fact that Ryan Nelson studied film in
157
00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:09.639
North Carolina, just like the guys
behind Righteous Gemstones, just like David Gordon
158
00:13:09.679 --> 00:13:11.759
Green and all those folks, they're
all from North Carolina or went to school
159
00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:16.279
together in North Carolina. So that's
a really interesting tidbit. And I bet
160
00:13:16.399 --> 00:13:18.840
you that. I mean, that
makes sense that he's a camera op on
161
00:13:18.879 --> 00:13:24.399
all these movies because what we have
here, and it warms my goddamn heart,
162
00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:28.559
is we have a film directed by
a guy who usually is a key
163
00:13:28.559 --> 00:13:31.120
grip or a grip and shot by
a guy who's off in a camera op.
164
00:13:31.360 --> 00:13:37.120
You have people who are biding their
time to step up and become that
165
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:41.120
next step. And that happens all
the time. I mean you'll see assistant
166
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:46.320
cameras become cameras become dps and so
on and so forth. Yeah, so
167
00:13:46.399 --> 00:13:48.639
I just want to say, like, y'all brought your goddamn a game.
168
00:13:48.679 --> 00:13:54.600
I'm sorry, I'm raving because I
love movies, and I love B movies.
169
00:13:56.039 --> 00:14:01.120
I work in B movies. I'm
a big believer that there are generally
170
00:14:01.159 --> 00:14:03.360
no bad movies, only bad audience, since you're often the wrong audience for
171
00:14:03.399 --> 00:14:07.879
the film, but the film is
fine. Yeah, it's rare that I
172
00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:11.200
watch a movie where I'm like,
maybe they cobbled together thirty grand, maybe
173
00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:13.759
they didn't. Maybe it was all
favors. Yeah, and they just knocked
174
00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:16.559
my goddamn socks off. Yeah.
So honestly, I would kiss you all
175
00:14:16.600 --> 00:14:20.480
on the mouth. I mean that, I really too, I would kiss
176
00:14:20.519 --> 00:14:22.679
you all in the mouth. So
anyway, sorry, yeah, you're fine,
177
00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:35.759
digressing. Do You Even? Movie? Will be right back, welcome
178
00:14:35.840 --> 00:14:41.919
back to Do You Even? Movie? And then wrapping us up as the
179
00:14:43.039 --> 00:14:46.200
editor on this because the one thing
that I solely love about this film is
180
00:14:46.240 --> 00:14:48.919
the editing, and it's the only
thing you love that's not solely. That
181
00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:52.399
solely is the wrong word. Sorely, sorely, no, shut up.
182
00:14:52.159 --> 00:14:58.279
But the editor is Matt Evans.
He did Prick, which was Nelson's short
183
00:14:58.279 --> 00:15:01.720
film back in twenty twelve. He
also an editor on The Cloverfield Paradox in
184
00:15:01.720 --> 00:15:03.559
twenty eighteen. Oh wow, that's
a that's a big gig. The main
185
00:15:03.799 --> 00:15:09.480
editor on Overlord in twenty eighteen.
Wow. Yeah, okay, Black and
186
00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:13.720
Blue in twenty nineteen, Samaritan,
the Syvester Stallone movie. Yes, yes,
187
00:15:13.759 --> 00:15:16.240
I like that one man, pretty
good. Main editor on The Pope's
188
00:15:16.240 --> 00:15:18.039
Exorcist. You haven't seen that,
have you? I have not yet.
189
00:15:18.039 --> 00:15:22.000
I need to. You would love
it. You would absolutely love the Pope's
190
00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:24.080
Exorcist. Yeah, you go see
that, I do. And by go
191
00:15:24.120 --> 00:15:26.120
see that, I mean watching it
at home because it's out of theaters.
192
00:15:26.200 --> 00:15:30.480
So that's true. So Wrapping Us
Up is the synopsis of this film.
193
00:15:30.480 --> 00:15:33.200
So Mercy Christmas twenty seventeen. This
is the back of the blu ray cover,
194
00:15:33.440 --> 00:15:37.600
says Michael Briskett crunches numbers in his
isolated, windowless office while coworkers enjoy
195
00:15:37.639 --> 00:15:41.120
the Christmas party he wasn't invited to. When his boss ask help with an
196
00:15:41.200 --> 00:15:45.440
urgent year end report, Michael was
flattered, but there's just one catch.
197
00:15:45.519 --> 00:15:48.960
It needs to be done by Christmas. The stack of research arrives with his
198
00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:52.480
boss's beautiful assistant, Cindy. Michael
is spitting and he invites her to his
199
00:15:52.519 --> 00:15:56.159
holiday gathering that weekend. Cindy ends
up being the only guest to show up
200
00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:58.720
in the two bond over holiday drinks. Cindy convinces Michael to bring his work
201
00:15:58.720 --> 00:16:03.919
along and join her family for a
traditional Christmas celebration. While they're a spiked
202
00:16:03.960 --> 00:16:07.600
glass of eggnog lands Michael and the
family's basement with his hands and feet bound
203
00:16:07.639 --> 00:16:11.639
among three other prisoners. Michael needs
to deliver the year end report or suffer
204
00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:15.360
the way those before him have suffered. I gotta admit it. I mean,
205
00:16:15.399 --> 00:16:19.200
that's not that's a very long way
to get there. Yeah, but
206
00:16:19.639 --> 00:16:23.399
it hits all the main points.
Yeah, very well. But I understand
207
00:16:23.480 --> 00:16:27.080
you. You feel you could improve
on that. Synopsis. My synopsis.
208
00:16:27.200 --> 00:16:30.759
Michael, a Christmas loving hard worker, accepts a dinner invitation only to find
209
00:16:30.759 --> 00:16:37.000
out he's on the menu for a
traditional family of cannibals. A traditional family
210
00:16:37.080 --> 00:16:41.600
of cannibals? What does that mean? Did they they're traditional family for Christmas
211
00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:44.200
and they're also cannibals. I don't
know the wording on it. I was
212
00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:47.120
trying to get the wording right now. This is what happens when you use
213
00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:53.240
Dave GPT. I wouldn't even pay
for that. I probably am. That
214
00:16:53.480 --> 00:17:00.600
is a large language model. Dave
GPT is a small language mob a nerd
215
00:17:00.679 --> 00:17:03.440
joke. If you laughed at this, I'm sorry you don't have a girlfriend.
216
00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:08.400
Uh all right, you ready to
get into this? I especially I
217
00:17:08.440 --> 00:17:11.160
already got into the egg show show. So we put on our bibs and
218
00:17:11.200 --> 00:17:17.400
get ready for the dinner. I
am ready, Eddie, So let's dive
219
00:17:17.480 --> 00:17:21.200
into this one. So Mercy Christmas
is the story of Michael Briskett and Michael
220
00:17:21.200 --> 00:17:25.640
Briskett is played by Stephen Hubble.
He was a grip on The Terminator Sarah
221
00:17:25.680 --> 00:17:30.559
Chrono Chronicle series and also with Avengers. They probably met gripping. Yeah,
222
00:17:30.599 --> 00:17:33.920
because he also did Prick in twenty
twelve. I would say their friendship,
223
00:17:33.319 --> 00:17:37.319
Yeah, was gripping. Was gripping
indeed? No, No, that's really
224
00:17:37.400 --> 00:17:40.160
cool. Yeah, because you really, seriously, you never know where you're
225
00:17:40.160 --> 00:17:42.480
gonna find talented folks like that.
Yeah, And I gotta say if he
226
00:17:42.839 --> 00:17:45.319
well, you're about to talk more. Does he have any big acting credits.
227
00:17:45.359 --> 00:17:48.759
No, that is his only one. Actually, that's his only acting
228
00:17:48.759 --> 00:17:53.440
credit period for real. Yes,
because he Okay, the guy who plays
229
00:17:53.440 --> 00:17:59.160
Michael Briskett in this movie, he
does not leave a fucking thing on the
230
00:17:59.319 --> 00:18:04.319
on the table. He is all
in on that role. He is crying,
231
00:18:04.559 --> 00:18:11.720
he's pleading, he's begging, he's
sincere, he's insecure. He's a
232
00:18:11.960 --> 00:18:17.759
damn fine actor. Yeah. I
I am honestly shocked. Ye that even
233
00:18:17.799 --> 00:18:21.240
the Hubble. Yeah, he only
has his main role is Michael Brisket for
234
00:18:21.319 --> 00:18:23.000
Mercy Christmas in twenty seventeen. He's
got a couple short ones before that.
235
00:18:23.200 --> 00:18:26.119
Oh and there's also a short in
twenty in twenty ten called Mercy Christis.
236
00:18:26.160 --> 00:18:27.519
Yeah. I know you didn't know
about that. I think I did.
237
00:18:27.640 --> 00:18:30.640
Yeah, Yeah, Mercy Christ was
partly a short first and then they developed
238
00:18:30.640 --> 00:18:34.440
it. Probably used the short to
raise money or something. But this dude,
239
00:18:34.480 --> 00:18:37.680
if he has not acted a lot, that is shocking because he's so
240
00:18:37.920 --> 00:18:41.880
good, good and sincerely the heart
and soul of the movie. I mean,
241
00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:45.759
without without Michael Briskett in the performance
that we get from Stephen Hubble,
242
00:18:47.079 --> 00:18:49.039
the movie would not have as much
impact. Even if the family, the
243
00:18:49.119 --> 00:18:52.200
cast of the family is spot fucking
all. Yeah, which they're dead good
244
00:18:52.519 --> 00:18:56.319
too, damn good. I meant
to say not dead. Going into the
245
00:18:56.319 --> 00:19:00.400
family, we have David Rupett,
who's played by who's playing Abe Robillard.
246
00:19:00.680 --> 00:19:03.519
He was on The Rockford Files in
nineteen seventy seven. He appeared in The
247
00:19:03.519 --> 00:19:07.880
Incredible Shrinking Woman in eighty one,
Three's Company in eighty four, Talking Walls
248
00:19:07.920 --> 00:19:11.119
in eighty seven Days of Our Lives
in eighty eight. He had one hundred
249
00:19:11.200 --> 00:19:15.039
and thirty three episodes of Supermarket Sweep
as the host in nineteen ninety. Wow
250
00:19:15.119 --> 00:19:18.960
that I didn't know. Yeah,
And he was also on The True Carry
251
00:19:18.960 --> 00:19:21.559
Show in two thousand and one and
made a brief appearance on True Blood in
252
00:19:21.559 --> 00:19:26.119
two thousand and eight. This dude
is so wholesome. Yes, he is
253
00:19:26.400 --> 00:19:30.640
so like he is as close as
you could get to an older sitcom dad.
254
00:19:30.759 --> 00:19:33.200
Yeah, because his kids are all
in their thirties. Yeah, so
255
00:19:33.279 --> 00:19:37.519
when you watch it, it's like, you know, he's an older gentleman.
256
00:19:37.559 --> 00:19:40.559
He's like the age of our dads, if we both had dads.
257
00:19:40.599 --> 00:19:45.559
Yeah, he's the grandpa. He's
this God, damnit, that took me
258
00:19:45.640 --> 00:19:51.759
a second. Damn you it was
so good. Oh my god, I
259
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:55.000
have tears of my eyes for multiple
reasons. Now, Oh that's okay,
260
00:19:55.240 --> 00:19:56.480
I'm the bastard in the risk.
Yes, no, no, that was
261
00:19:56.680 --> 00:20:00.720
that was perfect anyway. No,
but yeah, he's so wholesome, so
262
00:20:00.759 --> 00:20:03.720
wholesome, and he really disarms you
when you first meet him. Yeah,
263
00:20:03.759 --> 00:20:07.039
exactly, And I mean that's so
Briskett is. As the synopsis said,
264
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:10.519
he's a hard worker. He's hard
at work at this Christmas party. And
265
00:20:10.559 --> 00:20:12.880
then his boss, who is Andy
Rollard, who's played by Cole Gleeson,
266
00:20:14.200 --> 00:20:18.440
piece of shit, basically absolute.
I wouldn't call him a I'd call him
267
00:20:18.440 --> 00:20:22.920
a hunkish unker shit like this guy. The writers of this film, Yeah,
268
00:20:23.119 --> 00:20:26.759
we're working out some issues with an
old boss. I think so and
269
00:20:26.880 --> 00:20:32.160
fair enough and rightfully so some bosses
are that bad. Yeah, so,
270
00:20:32.519 --> 00:20:37.799
I mean, like the cruelty of
this boss and the level of like disdain
271
00:20:37.920 --> 00:20:44.160
for anything human. Yeah, he
has a chef kiss anyway, So Andy
272
00:20:44.240 --> 00:20:47.799
Robillard, he is the boss of
Brisket, and he basically task him with
273
00:20:47.839 --> 00:20:52.160
assignment that's like a huge, huge
fraud giant binder of information, number running
274
00:20:52.160 --> 00:20:55.599
and everything that has to be done
by Christmas. And I think we join
275
00:20:55.640 --> 00:20:56.720
them at like what's got to be
the twenty third I would imagine, because
276
00:20:56.799 --> 00:21:00.279
yeah, night before night before Christmas. Yeah, so twenty second, twenty
277
00:21:00.279 --> 00:21:03.680
third, and he is tasked with
this job. So he's like, you
278
00:21:03.720 --> 00:21:07.720
know, I'll have my assistant bring
the paperwork down. The assistant turns out
279
00:21:07.759 --> 00:21:11.200
to be his sister, Cindy,
but we don't find that out right away.
280
00:21:11.240 --> 00:21:14.160
She's played by Casey O'Keefe and she's
awesome in this as well. Oh
281
00:21:14.279 --> 00:21:17.839
yeah, that's I don't know where
they found everybody, yeah, or how
282
00:21:17.880 --> 00:21:21.680
they found everybody, but God damn
talk about lightning striking every single role.
283
00:21:21.799 --> 00:21:25.720
Yeah. So Cindy actually goes to
Brisket's Christmas party. It is literally just
284
00:21:25.759 --> 00:21:27.440
the two of them and they have
the best time. Like it starts off
285
00:21:27.480 --> 00:21:33.000
a little awes sweet. Yeah yeah, yeah, it's it's so like it's
286
00:21:33.039 --> 00:21:37.200
a meat cue. Yeah, it
is legit. Oh my god, it's
287
00:21:37.240 --> 00:21:45.759
a neat, neat, cute eat. Yes, yes it is. That's
288
00:21:45.759 --> 00:21:49.240
for me, that's for you,
that's for me. I deserve that.
289
00:21:49.680 --> 00:21:53.440
But no, what you what you
get to witness is that they're too awkward,
290
00:21:53.599 --> 00:21:56.880
like at first, and then like
they both just love Christmas so much.
291
00:21:57.000 --> 00:22:00.039
Yes, you know, Brisket his
mom talks about how his mom goes
292
00:22:00.079 --> 00:22:03.079
on cruises and he really doesn't get
to spend much time with her in the
293
00:22:03.119 --> 00:22:06.640
holiday and she's the only family.
Yeah, so she comes to the Christmas
294
00:22:06.680 --> 00:22:10.359
party. They exchange gifts, which
is super cute. She exchanges these this
295
00:22:10.759 --> 00:22:15.279
cookie Uh oh, I can't think
what is it? Cookie dough? It's
296
00:22:15.319 --> 00:22:18.839
a baking powder basically, right,
uh yeah yeah yeah, so here Christmas
297
00:22:18.839 --> 00:22:22.000
cooie recipe baking powder and he gives
her gives her a power strip because he
298
00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:26.480
wanted something to be practical. We'll
get back to that. This movie wastes
299
00:22:26.680 --> 00:22:32.240
no time and no motion. It
is such a great experience. I remember
300
00:22:32.279 --> 00:22:33.839
one year I did that as the
midnight movie at my Christmas party and actually
301
00:22:33.839 --> 00:22:36.799
have that in my notes, and
it went over huge. It went over
302
00:22:36.839 --> 00:22:38.759
super well. So they're having their
little Christmas party together, they're laughing,
303
00:22:38.759 --> 00:22:41.960
they're sharing memories, favorite Christmas movies, all this stuff. And at the
304
00:22:42.039 --> 00:22:45.240
end of the of the night,
she decides to invite him to her family
305
00:22:45.279 --> 00:22:48.359
Christmas. And he's like, well, won't that be awkward And she's like,
306
00:22:48.400 --> 00:22:52.839
no, they would love to have
you. Yes, And they avoided
307
00:22:52.880 --> 00:22:56.119
saying they'd love to have you for
dinner. Yeah, yeah, they which
308
00:22:56.119 --> 00:23:00.319
I appreciate because that was so easy. Remember kids, Mercy Christmas. In
309
00:23:00.400 --> 00:23:03.960
my opinion, near damn near a
five star film, doesn't go for that
310
00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:10.000
low hanging fruit. Meanwhile, blood
Rage says that is five times so anyway,
311
00:23:10.799 --> 00:23:12.759
but yeah, so sore. Their
whole scene is so cute, yeah,
312
00:23:12.799 --> 00:23:17.200
because she shows up and realizes she's
the only one there. Yea.
313
00:23:17.720 --> 00:23:22.440
And as soon as she realizes that, instead of being awkward, instead of
314
00:23:22.480 --> 00:23:26.839
being weird, she just goes,
are you Eggno, I love it,
315
00:23:26.920 --> 00:23:32.839
and they just bond over the fact
that they clearly both unironically love Christmas.
316
00:23:33.680 --> 00:23:38.240
The only problem is how dark that
gets a little bit later. But it
317
00:23:38.319 --> 00:23:44.279
seems like it's an unironic love of
Christmas. And I do wonder if,
318
00:23:45.039 --> 00:23:48.519
knowing that what we know, which
we've already revealed enough to know that they're
319
00:23:48.559 --> 00:23:52.720
cannibals, I wonder if the if
going to the party was a way to
320
00:23:53.079 --> 00:23:56.680
test if he would be missed by
anyone, like a way to like confirm.
321
00:23:56.799 --> 00:24:00.160
I think that he could be a
meal. Honestly think it is because
322
00:24:00.200 --> 00:24:04.759
she asked him about the family,
She asked me everything, because I even
323
00:24:04.759 --> 00:24:07.920
look at you and it's like,
is she Patsy, like just to get
324
00:24:07.960 --> 00:24:10.359
him to go be God? Yeah? Yeah. But I don't think her
325
00:24:10.440 --> 00:24:12.920
boss, who his boss turns out
to be her brother. I don't think
326
00:24:12.920 --> 00:24:15.759
he was completely in on it.
He seems somewhat surprised to see him.
327
00:24:15.960 --> 00:24:18.960
Absolutely I could be wrong on that
though. So they hit it off.
328
00:24:19.000 --> 00:24:22.559
She invites him to Christmas. They
go to the Christmas and that's when we
329
00:24:22.599 --> 00:24:25.400
meet, Like I said, Abe
Robillard, who was played by David Rupek,
330
00:24:25.440 --> 00:24:29.279
And then we meet granny who was
played by Gwynn Van Dam and my
331
00:24:29.519 --> 00:24:33.359
god, she's great, perfect casting. Absolute ten one hundred and thirty four
332
00:24:33.400 --> 00:24:37.000
acting credits on her resume. Oh
so she was like a journey woman.
333
00:24:37.119 --> 00:24:38.160
Yeah, I thought she was.
I thought she was one of those people's
334
00:24:38.160 --> 00:24:41.039
been in a lot of stuff.
Dark Shadows in nineteen sixty six, Kentucky
335
00:24:41.079 --> 00:24:45.319
Fried movie in seventy seven, Halloween
in seventy eight, even though I think
336
00:24:45.319 --> 00:24:48.079
her scene was deleted that she's a
nurse in the sanitarium. Oh wow,
337
00:24:48.319 --> 00:24:51.279
yeah, so if she was a
nurse in the sanitaria. Cut, I
338
00:24:51.319 --> 00:24:53.839
was about to say that. Cut. Look at this freaking guy, cuts
339
00:24:53.839 --> 00:24:56.799
me off, doesn't even let me
say my piece. TV cut, TV
340
00:24:56.880 --> 00:25:03.960
CUTT They're crazy. In Eighty Days
of Our Lives eighty three Star Trek Generations
341
00:25:03.960 --> 00:25:07.559
film in ninety four, and also
was in Burlesk in twenty ten. You'll
342
00:25:07.759 --> 00:25:11.160
have you know. She steals the
movie the immediate that she's in there,
343
00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:14.200
because she's that classic holiday granny where
it's like, oh, she's so sweet,
344
00:25:14.319 --> 00:25:18.880
Oh she said shit, yeah,
and she says giblets instead of giblets.
345
00:25:18.960 --> 00:25:22.440
Yes. So we meet the rest
of the family, which is Bart
346
00:25:22.440 --> 00:25:25.720
which is the brother. And we
meet Philip, who is a guy that's
347
00:25:25.759 --> 00:25:29.160
kind of just hanging out there to
get at Cindy. He's Cindy's x y
348
00:25:29.839 --> 00:25:33.079
and she doesn't want to reconcile,
but the family likes him, so they're
349
00:25:33.079 --> 00:25:36.759
like, why not, you know, shoot your shot their sport. Yeah.
350
00:25:36.799 --> 00:25:40.279
So we then we meet Andy,
which we've already met because again he's
351
00:25:40.319 --> 00:25:42.079
the boss, and he shows up
now the way oh sorry, oh no,
352
00:25:42.119 --> 00:25:47.200
god, the way they reveal that
this is is mister Roblart's family is
353
00:25:47.240 --> 00:25:49.559
the best. First of all,
brisket. What a name? Yeah,
354
00:25:49.599 --> 00:25:52.960
what a great He even says that, yeah, brisket, that's my favorite
355
00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:57.279
cut of meat. Love it.
So before they reveal that his this is
356
00:25:57.319 --> 00:26:02.559
his boss's family, he gives this
wonderful speech about like I've never really had
357
00:26:02.599 --> 00:26:06.759
an actual I might cry, I've
never really had an actual Christmas dinner before,
358
00:26:07.319 --> 00:26:10.200
but thanks to you guys, I'm
really excited to have a nice time
359
00:26:10.240 --> 00:26:12.880
with great people and good food.
And see I'll get tears in my eyes
360
00:26:12.880 --> 00:26:15.799
because I'm a fucking I believe in
Christmas, Yeah, I really do.
361
00:26:15.880 --> 00:26:21.839
I believe that Christmas is a time
when people are better than they normally are.
362
00:26:21.880 --> 00:26:23.880
They're kinder, they're sweeter, and
if you disagree, maybe you need
363
00:26:23.920 --> 00:26:26.400
to be kinder and sweeter just being
just go to you know what, to
364
00:26:26.400 --> 00:26:30.559
fuck it' say it. Because I'm
old now, I'm almost forty, fucking
365
00:26:30.960 --> 00:26:34.319
I really do believe that Christmas is
the perfect excuse to be a better person.
366
00:26:34.440 --> 00:26:37.880
Absolutely, and I love that.
I love that whole scene where he
367
00:26:38.359 --> 00:26:41.680
says, you know, thank you
all so much and everything like that,
368
00:26:41.079 --> 00:26:45.279
and then they eat their food,
which is disgusting because because we all and
369
00:26:45.319 --> 00:26:48.519
we also kind of left out there
is foreshadowy. Yeah. Oh yeah,
370
00:26:48.519 --> 00:26:52.519
we see them kidnapping the meat.
Oh yeah, we did, we did,
371
00:26:52.640 --> 00:26:53.599
Yeah, we kind of. It's
hard, Well, it's hard because
372
00:26:53.599 --> 00:26:57.079
this movie has so much going on
so quick and it's so interesting. But
373
00:26:57.160 --> 00:27:00.559
we witness a woman get abducted.
Yeah, We witness a guy who's a
374
00:27:00.559 --> 00:27:04.279
ticket scalper get upduckted, beaten up, and we beat an old man nursing
375
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:08.000
stolen from a nursing home. Yea, and uh so those are the people
376
00:27:08.000 --> 00:27:11.759
that make it clear something is not
quite right. Yeah, and also we
377
00:27:11.759 --> 00:27:15.759
get right into the horror with that
too, because when the chick gets abducted
378
00:27:15.759 --> 00:27:18.200
by the bar. We watch the
chick she's talking through at the bar get
379
00:27:18.400 --> 00:27:21.480
brutally. Yeah. Yeah, she
gets stabbed to death. Because that's one
380
00:27:21.519 --> 00:27:23.279
thing that we want to be clear
about with this movie. It is not
381
00:27:23.839 --> 00:27:26.759
pleasant when it comes to the violence. No, no, and and that's
382
00:27:26.759 --> 00:27:30.119
the way I like it. Yeah, I don't think it should be ha
383
00:27:30.160 --> 00:27:32.480
ha ha. People are getting stabbed
to death. Nah. I think you
384
00:27:32.559 --> 00:27:36.640
gotta make it hurt to a t. This is a dark horror comedy there.
385
00:27:36.680 --> 00:27:37.799
I would call it pitch black.
Pitch black, yeah, pitch black
386
00:27:37.839 --> 00:27:41.359
absolutely so uh yeah. Robillard is
like, hey, you know, are
387
00:27:41.359 --> 00:27:45.519
you enjoying my family brisket? And
at this point, Abe the dad has
388
00:27:45.519 --> 00:27:47.599
handed him a glass egg long.
He's like, here, you're an eggnog
389
00:27:47.640 --> 00:27:49.240
guy. Yeah. And he's drank
it. Yeah, he started drinking it.
390
00:27:49.359 --> 00:27:52.000
Yeah. And he's drugged. Yeah, he's drugged. But that's one
391
00:27:52.000 --> 00:27:55.200
of the best persons when he says
when he sees him, he says,
392
00:27:55.240 --> 00:27:56.640
you're like my family. I love
the way they do it. Because he
393
00:27:56.680 --> 00:28:03.359
goes mister Robillard and allman at the
table go yes, chef's kiss. So
394
00:28:03.400 --> 00:28:08.200
you're gonna hear so many, so
many chef's kisses. I know, I
395
00:28:08.240 --> 00:28:14.599
know, I know, I know
it's hard to chew on Yeah, I
396
00:28:14.640 --> 00:28:17.799
know. No, I don't even
mean to. I don't even I'm not
397
00:28:17.839 --> 00:28:19.839
even meaning to. But but no, there are so many moments of this
398
00:28:19.880 --> 00:28:23.519
movie that are just straight up like
yeah, just great moments, really well
399
00:28:23.559 --> 00:28:27.359
thought out, and that is one
of them that when we were watching it,
400
00:28:27.400 --> 00:28:32.440
I was probably maybe higher on this
movie the first watch than you even
401
00:28:33.279 --> 00:28:37.799
because I really appreciated everything it did. Yea. And when we were watching
402
00:28:37.839 --> 00:28:40.240
it, literally I think we were
like ten minutes in and I turned you
403
00:28:40.279 --> 00:28:44.039
went yeah, I wasn't as excited
to watch this movie because I forgot just
404
00:28:44.079 --> 00:28:47.359
how good it is. And that's
saying something when there's a movie that you
405
00:28:47.680 --> 00:28:51.680
remember loving yeah, but you're like, wait, oh fuck, this really
406
00:28:51.799 --> 00:28:55.440
is good. This movie is so
good. I remember I said it earlier
407
00:28:55.480 --> 00:28:56.400
and then went yah yah yah because
I said this movie is so good,
408
00:28:56.480 --> 00:29:00.240
should be fattening, Yes you did. I wasn't trying. I know.
409
00:29:00.880 --> 00:29:06.960
I am a poetic man, and
I use a lot of food poem,
410
00:29:07.240 --> 00:29:10.880
the poet, poetic speech. I
took off my glasses and now I can't
411
00:29:10.880 --> 00:29:14.759
see anything. I'm scared Okay,
you go back. So then Brisket gets
412
00:29:14.759 --> 00:29:17.000
taken out of the basement. And
this is one thing I want to make
413
00:29:17.079 --> 00:29:19.920
clear with this movie in regards to
the separation of its settings. So it's
414
00:29:19.960 --> 00:29:23.359
basically a one location horror film for
the most part, or one location.
415
00:29:23.519 --> 00:29:27.400
Yeah. Yeah, they're in this
house. And the house is is not
416
00:29:27.720 --> 00:29:33.160
super big. It's it's upper middle
class. It's not hugely decorated. It's
417
00:29:33.319 --> 00:29:37.200
very spacious. Uh. I know
what you're thinking, It's like, why
418
00:29:37.279 --> 00:29:40.599
is it like what am I a
realization? But my point is it's almost
419
00:29:40.880 --> 00:29:45.039
I mean, it looks like on
the top floor half the time, it's
420
00:29:45.119 --> 00:29:49.440
like a Christmas comedy ye, And
then the basement is fucking soft despair,
421
00:29:49.839 --> 00:29:55.119
despair, harrowing acts and just I
mean everything it's saw I mean I really
422
00:29:55.160 --> 00:29:57.680
mean that, Like it's the collector
in that base. Yeah. Yeah,
423
00:29:57.720 --> 00:30:03.720
yeah, it's it's dank, it's
dark, it's blue, there's nothing life
424
00:30:03.880 --> 00:30:07.200
like in it. But then when
you go upstairs, it's all warm colors
425
00:30:07.359 --> 00:30:11.680
and soft music and soft light.
And that's why I use the phrase meet
426
00:30:11.759 --> 00:30:15.039
cute about them, because, like
the movie, when they are not just
427
00:30:15.160 --> 00:30:19.200
showing the horrors of that basement.
Yeah, the movie is almost like a
428
00:30:19.279 --> 00:30:23.599
Hallmark movie. Absolutely, it's it's
pretty looking, it's it's very pleasing to
429
00:30:23.680 --> 00:30:26.160
look at. And then it stops. Yeah, it's decked out for Christmas
430
00:30:26.240 --> 00:30:30.440
upstairs, and there's some Christmas decorations
downstairs, and we'll get to that right
431
00:30:30.519 --> 00:30:33.160
now. Yeah, there's that light
up side and this says Merry Christmas.
432
00:30:33.400 --> 00:30:36.920
So we get a peek early on
from bart who comes up from the basement
433
00:30:37.559 --> 00:30:41.079
that there's some freaky stuff going on
down there. So that is a mountain
434
00:30:41.119 --> 00:30:45.119
of a man with a big ponytail. He's definitely like the physical enforcer resume
435
00:30:45.240 --> 00:30:48.839
by the way, only wow,
he's good in it. He is,
436
00:30:48.880 --> 00:30:55.039
he's good. Yeah, Do You
Even? Movie will be right back.
437
00:31:02.559 --> 00:31:08.920
Welcome back to Do You Even?
Movie. So we meet in the basement
438
00:31:08.960 --> 00:31:12.200
Catherine who's the kidnapped bartender. She's
played by Whitney Nielsen. We meet Clark
439
00:31:12.200 --> 00:31:15.880
who's the old man played by Steven
T. Bartlett, and then we meet
440
00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:18.960
Eddie who is the ticket scalper played
by DJ Hale, and all three of
441
00:31:19.039 --> 00:31:22.160
them are like, you know,
what the fuck are we doing down here?
442
00:31:22.319 --> 00:31:23.960
Like what's going on? Is Brisket's
like still trying to make sense of
443
00:31:25.000 --> 00:31:29.000
what's happening well, and he's the
most freshly drug yeah, freshly aloof freshly
444
00:31:29.079 --> 00:31:32.720
drugged. And that is when we
get to meet those three. And then
445
00:31:32.799 --> 00:31:37.039
we see Abe and Bart come down
and because they need to get some pieces
446
00:31:37.119 --> 00:31:41.759
for the recipe because then from the
old man, Yeah, from the old
447
00:31:41.799 --> 00:31:44.960
man. Because what we find out
is this is the first Christmas that they've
448
00:31:45.000 --> 00:31:48.480
gotten back together since the mom has
passed previously earlier, you're earlier. And
449
00:31:48.759 --> 00:31:52.279
Casey is the one or Cindy is
the one who is in charge of basically
450
00:31:52.519 --> 00:31:56.200
making the whole dinner. She's taking
over the matriarchal position of the family.
451
00:31:56.440 --> 00:32:00.559
And that's the one, the honeypot, the one who got him in all
452
00:32:00.599 --> 00:32:06.079
this. Yeah, and that's another
element that's very hallmark movie issues, like
453
00:32:06.160 --> 00:32:08.960
a family recovering from loss of a
loved one. Yeah. There are a
454
00:32:09.000 --> 00:32:13.480
lot of moments in this movie where
like two family members are in the kitchen
455
00:32:13.720 --> 00:32:16.839
and there's that moment where it's like, I'm so glad that we're all together.
456
00:32:17.200 --> 00:32:20.599
I just wish your mother could be
here to see this. And then
457
00:32:20.640 --> 00:32:24.440
they're cooking human body parts like it's
it is pitch black and now is a
458
00:32:24.480 --> 00:32:28.920
good time to mention as they take
meat off of that guy. Yeah,
459
00:32:29.839 --> 00:32:36.400
cannibalism gets to me in movies and
TV shows. It makes me squirm.
460
00:32:36.839 --> 00:32:40.279
You literally, all you have to
do is take a piece of normal meat,
461
00:32:40.400 --> 00:32:43.880
like a piece of chicken that's cooked, and go, this is human
462
00:32:43.960 --> 00:32:47.480
skin. And I will go,
oh, okay, he will I've seen
463
00:32:47.519 --> 00:32:51.240
it. No, it's I can't
help it. It's just my imagination.
464
00:32:51.400 --> 00:32:53.759
Just it makes me gross out to
the point where I've tried being vegan.
465
00:32:53.920 --> 00:32:58.480
Yeah, And honestly, like in
some cases, I liked it a lot
466
00:32:58.599 --> 00:33:04.279
because I didn't have to think about
meat so much. I loved the Hannibal
467
00:33:04.359 --> 00:33:07.000
series, but I had to be
hours out of meals to watch it.
468
00:33:07.079 --> 00:33:12.480
They would film in the Hannibal TV
series you watched all right, Oh yeah,
469
00:33:12.480 --> 00:33:15.039
they would film him cooking human meat
like the Loves like it was.
470
00:33:15.720 --> 00:33:17.799
They would film it like it was
the Food Network. Yeah, yeah,
471
00:33:17.799 --> 00:33:22.319
it would be beautiful and attractive.
So and that's kind of what they do
472
00:33:22.480 --> 00:33:28.200
here as well. Absolutely is because
what we find out is that with her
473
00:33:28.279 --> 00:33:31.720
taking over the Christmas that she has
to make all these recipes and that's kind
474
00:33:31.759 --> 00:33:35.680
of where a lot of the dark
humor comes in because you've got Abe and
475
00:33:35.839 --> 00:33:38.920
Bart that are coming down there and
chopping off legs and taking kidneys yea,
476
00:33:38.960 --> 00:33:43.960
and discussing the you know where the
meat cuts come from where? Yeah.
477
00:33:44.319 --> 00:33:46.960
And because of that, now we
have basically a build up of, well,
478
00:33:47.000 --> 00:33:51.160
who's going to make it through these
these four in the basement, And
479
00:33:51.279 --> 00:33:52.720
right off the bat they take the
old man out of the equation. Yea.
480
00:33:53.480 --> 00:33:57.799
He gets his giblets I think made
for the for the first like feast,
481
00:33:57.880 --> 00:34:00.319
yeah, which is mostly your's an
organ yeah kind of thing, not
482
00:34:00.480 --> 00:34:04.720
the cute giblets that mean your testicles, yeah, although that comes later.
483
00:34:04.880 --> 00:34:08.519
Yeah. And then to make matters
worse, you have freakin Andy coming back
484
00:34:08.599 --> 00:34:15.280
down into the basement and grabbing Brisket
to take him back upstairs because he still
485
00:34:15.400 --> 00:34:19.199
needs these works done by Christmas.
He needs the work done because the meeting
486
00:34:19.480 --> 00:34:22.880
that he needs all that paperwork and
research done for is on the twenty sixth.
487
00:34:22.960 --> 00:34:27.880
Yeah. And as we mentioned earlier, the power strip comes back into
488
00:34:27.920 --> 00:34:31.039
play because that is what Brisket gifted
Cindy at their little Christmas party, and
489
00:34:31.639 --> 00:34:35.920
he decides that he's going to use
that against Brisket. Andy does by wrapping
490
00:34:36.000 --> 00:34:38.360
Christmas lights around him, singing off
some of the wires so that they shock,
491
00:34:38.840 --> 00:34:43.239
and now he can shock Brisket with
the power strip and Christmas lights wrapped
492
00:34:43.280 --> 00:34:45.559
all around him. Which keep in
mind, Brisket loves Christmas. He adores
493
00:34:45.639 --> 00:34:50.960
Christmas everything about it. So he's
using the gift that he got for Cindy
494
00:34:51.079 --> 00:34:53.400
and also his love of Christmas with
the Christmas lights and everything against him to
495
00:34:53.559 --> 00:34:58.920
make him work while knowing that he's
most likely going to get killed and eat.
496
00:34:59.119 --> 00:35:00.800
Most likely, no, he's going
to because I mean, come on,
497
00:35:00.880 --> 00:35:04.679
they're not gonna be you know,
sold out by that. They're not
498
00:35:04.800 --> 00:35:07.599
gonna have that take them down.
No, And what Dave is saying,
499
00:35:07.599 --> 00:35:10.840
because I think you painted a picture
of the literal but not the visual.
500
00:35:12.880 --> 00:35:16.960
So literally, Brisket is wrapped in
Christmas lights, but some of the wires
501
00:35:17.000 --> 00:35:21.400
are stuck into his skin, so
when he plugs him in, he lights
502
00:35:21.519 --> 00:35:24.880
up like a Christmas tree and then
starts convulsing in pain. And that is
503
00:35:25.000 --> 00:35:31.199
the pain that he uses to force
Brisket to work. It's so fucking twisted.
504
00:35:31.320 --> 00:35:35.079
It's very twisted, and not to
make matters worse, but they also
505
00:35:35.199 --> 00:35:38.559
are very very on par to make
sure that they have this shocking sound effect
506
00:35:38.719 --> 00:35:45.360
every time that I leave my words
alone. No, but you're right,
507
00:35:45.440 --> 00:35:49.039
No, No, this movie,
they don't skip on anything and the pain
508
00:35:49.199 --> 00:35:52.639
of the special of the sound effects. Yeah. Actually the sound effects of
509
00:35:52.679 --> 00:35:54.199
this movie are really strong, by
the way. I absolutely when during one
510
00:35:54.199 --> 00:35:58.599
of the massacre scenes, they had
the sound of blood dripping so so properly,
511
00:35:58.840 --> 00:36:02.280
I thought my dog was I thought
you kinda was taking a leak in
512
00:36:02.360 --> 00:36:05.639
the back of my house, and
I was like, hold on. I
513
00:36:05.760 --> 00:36:07.960
paused it, and I was like, oh, that's the movie. So,
514
00:36:07.480 --> 00:36:10.719
I mean, they didn't skip on
anything. There's nothing about this very
515
00:36:10.800 --> 00:36:15.440
indie movie that would make you think
you're watching a cheap movie other than the
516
00:36:15.559 --> 00:36:17.239
lack of movie starts. No,
and I mean, and going back to
517
00:36:17.519 --> 00:36:22.599
the family and the whole harmark at
Hallmark aspect of it is then you have
518
00:36:22.719 --> 00:36:23.519
Andy who's like, you know,
his dad comes, He's like, hey,
519
00:36:23.800 --> 00:36:25.559
the game's on, you know,
come on, come on watch the
520
00:36:25.639 --> 00:36:30.519
game. Yeah. So then he
takes the extension cord with the power strip,
521
00:36:30.599 --> 00:36:31.920
plugs it in, sits in the
armchair in the family room with all
522
00:36:31.920 --> 00:36:35.800
of them, and they're watching the
game and then Grandma Granny comes in and
523
00:36:35.880 --> 00:36:37.880
she's like, what are you all
doing? It's time for church. And
524
00:36:38.039 --> 00:36:44.440
there are multiple scenes, including this
one where they're all talking and having like
525
00:36:44.559 --> 00:36:47.760
family discussions about wholesome things, and
literally he's just zapping him in the back
526
00:36:47.800 --> 00:36:55.920
and you just see what the actor
Hubbs, step Stephen Hubble, he does
527
00:36:57.079 --> 00:37:06.039
not. He sells everything, Yeah, with so much empathy. Uh and
528
00:37:06.239 --> 00:37:09.440
and empathy like being able to sell
pain with empathy is everything. Yeah.
529
00:37:10.320 --> 00:37:16.639
I was very very impressed by how
much he made me feel his pain along
530
00:37:16.679 --> 00:37:22.599
with him before he even gives his
incredible monologues later. So yeah, woof
531
00:37:22.840 --> 00:37:25.320
so and the whole thing in regards
of them going to church, it also
532
00:37:25.480 --> 00:37:29.920
presents this whole family dynamic that we
get to see, like you know that
533
00:37:30.000 --> 00:37:31.880
they're, oh, they're they're god
fearing people and that they have all this
534
00:37:32.480 --> 00:37:36.000
love for each other. But yeah, in the meanwhile, they have four
535
00:37:36.199 --> 00:37:38.000
people kidnapped in their basement that they're
taking food from him. Well, and
536
00:37:38.119 --> 00:37:43.920
you know, they they they established
so much that they're religious that uh,
537
00:37:44.840 --> 00:37:47.760
it almost like they don't dive into
their into their origins, which is good
538
00:37:47.760 --> 00:37:51.480
because it wouldn't make any sense to
like have them sit and just go.
539
00:37:51.719 --> 00:37:54.039
So let me tell you about when
we came over on the mayflower and got
540
00:37:54.079 --> 00:37:57.800
infected by the wind to go or
some crap, you know, don't we
541
00:37:57.840 --> 00:38:01.079
don't do that here. But there
is reference to the fact that this is
542
00:38:01.119 --> 00:38:05.039
a tradition, it's a long standing
in their family. It is you know,
543
00:38:05.239 --> 00:38:07.280
et cetera. Actually, you know, if there's ever a mercy Christmas
544
00:38:07.320 --> 00:38:09.760
too, you can steal that,
Wendy go idea. That's a good one.
545
00:38:09.800 --> 00:38:16.840
Actually that would actually work. Uh. But they do a great job
546
00:38:16.920 --> 00:38:20.199
of kind of establishing like, hey, this is what the family does.
547
00:38:20.480 --> 00:38:22.719
That's all there is to it.
It's on the dad's side. Yep.
548
00:38:22.840 --> 00:38:28.079
And they cook and eat people.
It sounds like they do it only around
549
00:38:28.239 --> 00:38:31.639
holidays, like family gatherings is what
it sounds like. But again they don't
550
00:38:31.800 --> 00:38:37.199
really lay that out. The granny
has no problem talking about how to cook
551
00:38:37.239 --> 00:38:38.800
human bodies. When they're talking about
because they missed their mom, it's about
552
00:38:38.800 --> 00:38:43.320
how she knew how to prepare human
legs better and this and that. So,
553
00:38:43.480 --> 00:38:45.960
I mean, it is entirely their
family's thing. Yeah, And there
554
00:38:46.079 --> 00:38:51.599
is a massive disconnect which is meant
to scare you, and it does.
555
00:38:51.719 --> 00:38:53.840
It scares me of how they're like, oh, you know, we have
556
00:38:53.920 --> 00:38:55.559
to go to church and we have
to do this, we have to be
557
00:38:55.679 --> 00:38:59.079
kind and this and this and this, and then the people who are meat
558
00:38:59.159 --> 00:39:01.880
are just meat. And I mean
well, I mean there are multiple times
559
00:39:01.880 --> 00:39:07.679
her Brisket is very effectively you think, yeah, getting sympathy from the killers,
560
00:39:07.719 --> 00:39:10.280
and then you realize that it doesn't
to them, you're just meet though.
561
00:39:10.400 --> 00:39:14.800
Yeah, it's I think the biggest
turning point, which we'll get to
562
00:39:14.880 --> 00:39:19.159
here in a second, is that
you have the family dynamic happening and you
563
00:39:19.199 --> 00:39:22.559
know everything, and Brisket's still holding
onto the fact that maybe maybe I can
564
00:39:22.840 --> 00:39:25.559
get out of this, maybe I
can convince He's in denial about the girl
565
00:39:25.719 --> 00:39:30.599
being one of them. He thinks
that that she is just being taken along
566
00:39:30.719 --> 00:39:37.320
for the ride, and the way
they show that that's not the case is
567
00:39:38.480 --> 00:39:42.320
very effective. So we'll get there
in a second. But first, so
568
00:39:42.440 --> 00:39:44.920
they go to church, which means
they take Brisket back down to the basement.
569
00:39:44.960 --> 00:39:46.400
That's when he gets to talk to
Eddie and Catherine and all those guys.
570
00:39:46.480 --> 00:39:52.079
Yes, Eddie is rightfully so just
ready to pound these motherfuckers. Eddie
571
00:39:52.159 --> 00:39:55.599
is basically in this Yeah, I'm
a pretty chill guy. I don't like
572
00:39:55.679 --> 00:39:59.519
to fight, but if you wrong
me, I will eat your children alive.
573
00:40:00.199 --> 00:40:04.519
So damn. What happens next is
the family comes back from church,
574
00:40:04.559 --> 00:40:06.880
and by this point, you know, they've called for help, nobody's coming.
575
00:40:06.920 --> 00:40:07.519
They see that their back, so
they're like, Okay, well,
576
00:40:07.519 --> 00:40:10.679
I guess we just gotta do what
we gotta do. So the dad comes
577
00:40:10.719 --> 00:40:14.559
back downstairs talking to Bart about the
game that they were watching because they had
578
00:40:14.559 --> 00:40:16.079
to step away. He mentioned this
thing about sneaking out of church and go
579
00:40:16.320 --> 00:40:20.400
listening to the game in the car. Yeah. Yeah, And he says
580
00:40:20.480 --> 00:40:22.159
something along the lines of that,
you know, did mom ever see you
581
00:40:22.280 --> 00:40:23.920
doing that? And he's like,
you know, your mom probably did,
582
00:40:23.960 --> 00:40:28.760
but if she did, she never
said anything. And literally Eddie decides to
583
00:40:29.280 --> 00:40:34.119
call the mom a bitch, which
makes Abe on a dime turn and look
584
00:40:34.159 --> 00:40:37.360
in the most evil thing of what
did you say, and just goes at
585
00:40:37.480 --> 00:40:40.679
him. And they pick him up
and they start chopping his fucking legs off.
586
00:40:40.840 --> 00:40:45.639
Yeah yeah they do, and it's
freaking gruesome. Uh And and they
587
00:40:45.679 --> 00:40:49.559
cut off his legs which they'd already
referenced. This isn't a vengeance thing,
588
00:40:49.760 --> 00:40:52.440
No they are. They want to
prepare legs. Yes, that's what they
589
00:40:52.519 --> 00:40:59.559
want to happen that night. So
they cut off his legs and it's as
590
00:40:59.719 --> 00:41:02.079
all as it would be. Yeah, in real life, it absolutely is,
591
00:41:02.159 --> 00:41:06.800
because not only is it just you
know, multiple times the cleaver's going
592
00:41:06.880 --> 00:41:08.800
down, but the whole time they're
doing it, Abe and Bart are still
593
00:41:08.840 --> 00:41:13.239
having a conversation about basketball and the
fan. They're just talking about whatever is.
594
00:41:13.400 --> 00:41:15.639
It's just cooking, it's just getting
ready to eat. So they get
595
00:41:15.679 --> 00:41:19.199
the legs ready, they take them
upstairs and it's stocking time. And then
596
00:41:19.280 --> 00:41:22.800
that's when Philip. This whole time
has been annoying most of the family,
597
00:41:22.920 --> 00:41:25.119
but specifically Cindy because the ex there. She doesn't want them there, clearly,
598
00:41:25.199 --> 00:41:28.679
why the hell are you here?
Well, and he always has some
599
00:41:28.880 --> 00:41:32.920
annoying reference. He always has some
annoying reference like Henry David Thurrow said,
600
00:41:34.360 --> 00:41:38.920
Mahatma Gandhi always said d And they're
just like but the family they're very nice.
601
00:41:38.960 --> 00:41:42.679
Like earlier, they's like the dad
had said, there's always a place
602
00:41:42.760 --> 00:41:45.960
for you on our table. Although
now that I think about it, could
603
00:41:46.000 --> 00:41:50.679
have been. Could have been.
It totally could have been, because the
604
00:41:50.760 --> 00:41:53.840
next thing that we see is Cindy
has fucking had it and he says one
605
00:41:53.960 --> 00:41:57.960
line too many. And by this
point they're doing the stockings and there's a
606
00:41:58.000 --> 00:42:00.679
thread loose on the stockings, so
she has a huge pay cut the little
607
00:42:00.719 --> 00:42:06.519
thread off. Philip says the wrong
thing, and we watch Cindy unleash on
608
00:42:06.719 --> 00:42:10.079
him with these scissors and just fucking
kill him. She stabs him, She
609
00:42:10.239 --> 00:42:14.000
stabs the fuck out. Yes,
she does, bloods everywhere, and the
610
00:42:14.000 --> 00:42:15.679
whole time the family's watching, not
freaking out again, going back to this
611
00:42:15.719 --> 00:42:19.079
whole thing about how fucked up they
are. And at the very end,
612
00:42:19.159 --> 00:42:21.559
she's like, you know what would
be good for dinner or for dessert?
613
00:42:21.719 --> 00:42:23.760
Mince meat pies. That wasn't her
idea, that was the death or the
614
00:42:23.840 --> 00:42:27.280
death the dad suggested it. Yeah, But then she was like, oh
615
00:42:27.400 --> 00:42:30.079
yeah, And then he's like,
we could use Philip. Philip, yeah,
616
00:42:30.079 --> 00:42:32.800
and he's just laying their dead.
So and Philip knew they were cannibals.
617
00:42:34.079 --> 00:42:37.079
He ate dinner with them, yes, So uh, that goes to
618
00:42:37.159 --> 00:42:40.519
show you that there's an element and
actually that feeds into the religious aspect.
619
00:42:40.679 --> 00:42:44.719
Yeah, if they had been married, I don't think he could be on
620
00:42:44.800 --> 00:42:46.639
the menu. Probably not because then
he'd be in the family. And they
621
00:42:46.719 --> 00:42:52.639
don't hurt people in their family.
And what the only thing that scares me
622
00:42:52.760 --> 00:43:00.920
more than unrepentant monsters is monsters that
have a moral code, but all the
623
00:43:00.000 --> 00:43:04.199
things they're doing fit it. They're
not hypocrites, No, that's true.
624
00:43:04.360 --> 00:43:08.079
That's what makes it scary. Yeah, they're not hypocrites necessarily, they fully
625
00:43:08.280 --> 00:43:13.679
understand why and how they're doing everything, and that makes me want to row.
626
00:43:13.920 --> 00:43:16.280
Yeah, no kidding. So once
Philip is dead and they're deciding that
627
00:43:16.320 --> 00:43:20.760
he's next, so we go back
to the basement and Andy goes and grabs
628
00:43:20.800 --> 00:43:24.280
brisket again. Because the one thing
that just begins so hard to watch his
629
00:43:24.360 --> 00:43:30.079
brisket is tortured. I would say
it's an hour of this eighty minute movie.
630
00:43:30.119 --> 00:43:35.239
He's constantly being tormented. Yeah,
and not just physically but emotionally.
631
00:43:35.760 --> 00:43:38.159
I mean, this motherfucker's telling him
like, no one will miss you,
632
00:43:39.360 --> 00:43:43.480
this is why you're gonna be on
our table and all this stuff. Yeah,
633
00:43:43.679 --> 00:43:49.199
it's it's he's shattering him really as
a person. It's hard to watch,
634
00:43:49.320 --> 00:43:52.599
but then that's what makes the finale
so much more satisfying, which we'll
635
00:43:52.639 --> 00:43:53.920
get to. Yeah, and seriously, if you haven't seen this movie,
636
00:43:53.960 --> 00:43:57.199
you need to watch it because we
are I mean, I know we've been
637
00:43:57.239 --> 00:44:00.280
spoiling a lot, but like spoiler
alert, like we have so much to
638
00:44:00.400 --> 00:44:06.480
talk about that is so excellent.
This movie delivers in every way. Yeah.
639
00:44:07.480 --> 00:44:10.280
But first, so, yeah,
you have to eat your meat before
640
00:44:10.320 --> 00:44:15.079
you can have your pudding. Back
in the basement, they decide that Brisket
641
00:44:15.280 --> 00:44:19.320
is going to be the meal for
Christmas Day, so they are down there
642
00:44:19.400 --> 00:44:22.000
with him, and at this point
we have a fake out happen where Briskett
643
00:44:22.039 --> 00:44:25.559
tries to get away while Philip was
being stabbed, and there's a knock at
644
00:44:25.599 --> 00:44:30.320
the door and they get to the
door. It's a cop. It is
645
00:44:30.360 --> 00:44:32.760
a cop and her name is Denise, And for just a brief second,
646
00:44:32.800 --> 00:44:37.440
we think there's hope until we find
out Nope, that's Bart's girlfriend. Bart's
647
00:44:37.559 --> 00:44:44.320
fiance find out very soon after,
Yes, which means that she's allowed to
648
00:44:44.480 --> 00:44:47.039
know what the family is doing.
And this is a big thing too.
649
00:44:47.400 --> 00:44:52.679
She was aware. Yeah, so
now we're coming up on when she has
650
00:44:52.760 --> 00:44:55.920
to seal the deal by eating a
piece of human meat. Flash And naturally,
651
00:44:57.639 --> 00:45:00.679
with you have such a delicate family, you want to protect it.
652
00:45:00.719 --> 00:45:04.599
And that's what Andy is doing in
regards to his anger immediately when he finds
653
00:45:04.639 --> 00:45:07.199
out that Philip or that Bart has
brought an outsider into the family, a
654
00:45:07.280 --> 00:45:10.000
girlfriend, but he didn't even know
exists. He didn't even know exist,
655
00:45:10.079 --> 00:45:14.440
and I love clear that he's like
not involved with the family very much.
656
00:45:14.480 --> 00:45:15.000
Bart's like, you know, well, if you were here more, you'd
657
00:45:15.039 --> 00:45:21.960
probably know about it. So do
you even? Movie will be right back,
658
00:45:29.480 --> 00:45:37.480
welcome back to do You Even?
Movie? We meet Denise Bart's Bart's
659
00:45:37.519 --> 00:45:40.559
fiance, and she wholly embraces the
family like they love him. No,
660
00:45:40.719 --> 00:45:45.079
she's pretty trepidacious. Trepidacious verst still
that first bite until that first bite,
661
00:45:45.199 --> 00:45:49.960
yes, so, which is which
is honestly heartbreaking. Yeah, they've prepared
662
00:45:50.000 --> 00:45:52.480
the legs. She's sitting at the
table and by this point Bart and Andy
663
00:45:52.559 --> 00:45:54.960
have both had it out a little
bit. So it's a little tension around
664
00:45:55.000 --> 00:45:58.440
the table. Yeah, which is
hilarious too, by the way, the
665
00:45:58.599 --> 00:46:01.880
tension in this family totally normal family
tension. Yeah, because literally when he
666
00:46:01.880 --> 00:46:04.960
says, like you let an outsider
in here. He's like, well,
667
00:46:05.000 --> 00:46:07.199
if you were around the family more, maybe you'd know about her. It's
668
00:46:07.280 --> 00:46:12.639
like, that's just normal family bullshit. Yeah, I love this. So
669
00:46:13.199 --> 00:46:17.639
she is basically given the first bite. So they have this disgusting looking cooked
670
00:46:17.719 --> 00:46:21.280
leg on the table. So Eddie's
leg has been cooked, it's served on
671
00:46:21.320 --> 00:46:22.639
the table. He goes in,
cuts a chunk off, puts it on
672
00:46:22.760 --> 00:46:25.679
her plate, and basically says,
this is the bite that's going to solidify
673
00:46:25.719 --> 00:46:29.440
you into the family. Yeah,
and it's it's a big build up.
674
00:46:29.559 --> 00:46:32.840
There's lots of suspense she does.
She is like uneasy, but she's in
675
00:46:32.960 --> 00:46:37.719
it. Yeah. And then and
then she takes that fucking bite. And
676
00:46:37.000 --> 00:46:40.280
the more as we're talking about,
the more I'm realizing how much it bothers
677
00:46:40.320 --> 00:46:45.480
me, because it's that moment of
total perversion. Yeah, that moment where
678
00:46:45.000 --> 00:46:47.840
she's not going back anymore. Uh
huh. And there are a lot of
679
00:46:47.920 --> 00:46:51.719
theories, you know, not to
go all the way back to the Wendy
680
00:46:51.800 --> 00:46:54.079
Go again and stuff, but there
are a lot of cultures that believe that
681
00:46:54.239 --> 00:46:59.559
once you eat human flesh, you
become different. Yeah, like that's a
682
00:46:59.800 --> 00:47:05.199
very very common thing in a lot
of human societies. Is this belief that
683
00:47:05.280 --> 00:47:09.559
once you eat flesh, you just
become another And in this film that is
684
00:47:09.639 --> 00:47:15.679
expressed because the moment she choose on
that, her facial expression changes to joy.
685
00:47:15.320 --> 00:47:19.440
And then all she has to say
is how good it is? Yep,
686
00:47:19.719 --> 00:47:22.599
to the cook, who is how
she I think? She says like,
687
00:47:22.679 --> 00:47:24.280
it's so rich rich. It's like, how did you make this so
688
00:47:24.519 --> 00:47:28.960
rich? And they go, by
the way, it's butter, You stupid
689
00:47:29.039 --> 00:47:31.239
bitch, learn how to cook.
Whenever people are like, wow, this
690
00:47:31.440 --> 00:47:35.039
is so good, it's like,
hey, it's called butter, it's called
691
00:47:35.079 --> 00:47:37.840
garlic. Shut up anyway. So
by this point, Denise has been welcome
692
00:47:37.880 --> 00:47:40.119
into the family, but Andy still
has issue with it. And at one
693
00:47:40.159 --> 00:47:44.320
point he actually grabs a steak knife
on the table, and we don't know
694
00:47:44.440 --> 00:47:46.920
what he's gonna do. He starts
leaning toward her, and then the dad
695
00:47:47.360 --> 00:47:50.760
puts his hand on him and says, why don't you and I have a
696
00:47:50.840 --> 00:47:54.519
talk outside? And they're drinking Scotch, smoking cigars, and he his dad.
697
00:47:54.840 --> 00:48:00.880
They're smoking cigars to celebrate that.
He because right before that we got
698
00:48:00.920 --> 00:48:04.719
a little ahead. But there's so
much to talk about this movie because he
699
00:48:04.800 --> 00:48:07.119
had just the knife thing he leaned
in. That was right after he had
700
00:48:07.159 --> 00:48:09.519
said, like, I proposed to
her and she said yes because I guess
701
00:48:09.559 --> 00:48:13.400
like a week earlier he had taken
her on a trip and proposed to her.
702
00:48:13.519 --> 00:48:15.840
Yep. So now they're in the
back and they're drinking Scotch and the
703
00:48:15.920 --> 00:48:20.079
brothers brought out cigars to celebrate,
and he's like, I got him from
704
00:48:20.119 --> 00:48:23.360
the gas station. But it's tradition, you know, and so Andy takes
705
00:48:23.440 --> 00:48:27.719
like reluctantly and ends up breaking it
because he's still not going for this.
706
00:48:28.239 --> 00:48:30.360
And then back down in the basement, now bart and Denise are down there
707
00:48:30.400 --> 00:48:34.840
with Brisket and he's just patting him
with an electric knife, pointing out the
708
00:48:34.920 --> 00:48:37.079
points of cut on him. Yea, how he's gonna be served. And
709
00:48:37.199 --> 00:48:39.559
then he's like, you know,
we should probably tendrize him a little bit,
710
00:48:39.599 --> 00:48:44.599
and so he takes the fucking electric
knife and cuts into his shoulder and
711
00:48:44.719 --> 00:48:47.119
Briskett is just standing there crying in
pain. Meanwhile, you know, Eddie
712
00:48:47.519 --> 00:48:51.199
is still alive at this point,
which is kind of a surprise, but
713
00:48:51.440 --> 00:48:55.039
Catherine has tried to defend him and
she ends up getting the wrath of Denise,
714
00:48:55.079 --> 00:48:58.119
which is where we see the turning
point for Denise, not just with
715
00:48:58.199 --> 00:49:01.800
the bite, but she goes over
and starts kicking the shit wi unbelievable because
716
00:49:01.840 --> 00:49:05.519
she bites Bart when she's cutting Brit
when he's cutting Brisket, right right,
717
00:49:05.639 --> 00:49:07.840
right. So by this point,
now Brisket has been cut, he's been
718
00:49:07.920 --> 00:49:12.480
tortured, and now him and Catherine
are in the basement alone together because Eddie's
719
00:49:12.519 --> 00:49:15.599
kind of just passed out and that
kind of I mean, it's a shock
720
00:49:15.679 --> 00:49:17.119
that he's alive. Oh yeah,
because they not only do they chop his
721
00:49:17.239 --> 00:49:20.719
legs with the clever, they also
amputate him with an iron because that'll come
722
00:49:20.760 --> 00:49:22.719
back into place. And they caught
herize the wound with an iron, which
723
00:49:22.800 --> 00:49:29.400
is just vicious. This is a
funny movie, yeah, pitch black comedy,
724
00:49:29.519 --> 00:49:31.679
but it's really dark, really dark. So I really love it.
725
00:49:31.880 --> 00:49:35.880
But boy, howdy, Catherine at
this point has completely, you know,
726
00:49:36.079 --> 00:49:37.760
just had it. She's already hated
Christmas, because we kind of forgot to
727
00:49:37.800 --> 00:49:40.440
mention that when they introduce the character, she's all fucked Christmas at the bar
728
00:49:40.559 --> 00:49:45.000
and everything. Yeah, yeah,
she's very negative on Christmas, and uh,
729
00:49:46.239 --> 00:49:51.400
Brisket tries to basically persuade her that
Christmas is the greatest time. He
730
00:49:51.519 --> 00:49:54.920
goes into this because he goes into
this weird, this weird mindset though where
731
00:49:55.039 --> 00:50:00.079
he's he's explaining like that this is
all wrong because it it's Christmas, so
732
00:50:00.280 --> 00:50:05.239
you shouldn't be hurting us, you
shouldn't be hurting anyone. You're not supposed
733
00:50:05.280 --> 00:50:07.000
to do this at Christmas. This
is supposed to be the time. That's
734
00:50:07.039 --> 00:50:12.199
the thing. It's like he has
a moment where his mind can't comprehend this,
735
00:50:13.079 --> 00:50:15.840
this level of cruelty, let alone, but on Christmas, and to
736
00:50:16.079 --> 00:50:22.800
celebrate Christmas by harming people is just
it short, It short circuits him for
737
00:50:22.840 --> 00:50:25.639
a second. And of course her
response is fuck Christmas. Christmas is dead.
738
00:50:25.719 --> 00:50:29.039
The Christmas is dead, which is
and the way she says it that
739
00:50:29.159 --> 00:50:31.840
actor Christmas is so dead. So
good. Yeah, no, she is
740
00:50:31.920 --> 00:50:37.440
phenomenal. So he he is just
distraught, destroyed now and she's like,
741
00:50:37.559 --> 00:50:42.760
hey, who's the rudest range,
the rudest reindeer. She she sees that
742
00:50:43.079 --> 00:50:47.880
this hope and belief that Christmas is
wonderful is all he has, so she
743
00:50:49.000 --> 00:50:52.159
tells a joke. So she says, yeah, who's the who's the reindeer
744
00:50:52.199 --> 00:50:57.280
with the worst man who's the reindeer
with the worst manners? Rude, rude
745
00:50:57.559 --> 00:51:02.039
all and he chuckle and she chuckles. Yeah, And at that moment,
746
00:51:04.000 --> 00:51:07.480
if they die, a part of
us will too. Yeah, exactly,
747
00:51:07.880 --> 00:51:12.159
because that's such I know, I
know, I'm like losing my mind,
748
00:51:12.199 --> 00:51:16.679
but it's such excellent storytelling. Yeah, not even good storytelling, excellent storytelling.
749
00:51:16.800 --> 00:51:22.559
Yeah. And it hit me right
in the goddamn heart and to hit
750
00:51:22.639 --> 00:51:25.800
it even harder. So by this
point, the family has basically done their
751
00:51:25.880 --> 00:51:30.239
initial Christmas Eve dinner. Everything's you
know, getting torn down. Denise goes
752
00:51:30.280 --> 00:51:32.000
to leave and Bart tells her that
she can stay the night, and she
753
00:51:32.119 --> 00:51:35.599
says she should stay the night,
and she's like, I don't think you're
754
00:51:35.760 --> 00:51:37.440
well. At first, she makes
an excuse about work, and then she
755
00:51:37.480 --> 00:51:39.760
says, I don't think your brother
would like that. Yeah, And he's
756
00:51:39.800 --> 00:51:44.280
like, let me handhandle that.
So the family goes to bed, except
757
00:51:44.360 --> 00:51:47.320
for Andy, who goes back down
to the basement gets brisket and I shit
758
00:51:47.440 --> 00:51:51.440
you not when I say that,
he is shocking this poor guy. While
759
00:51:51.559 --> 00:51:55.159
carolers are singing outside a Beautiful Soul. It's an incredible juxtaposition. Yeah,
760
00:51:55.360 --> 00:51:58.880
and this movie's full of those.
Yeah. Yeah. And we're just hearing
761
00:51:58.960 --> 00:52:01.679
the electric we're seeing the lights flicker
and just you know, it's just he's
762
00:52:01.760 --> 00:52:07.400
drinking eggnog with whiskey and just pounding
on Brisket to get this work done.
763
00:52:07.599 --> 00:52:09.480
And they start to hint that one
thing the family likes as they're whiskey,
764
00:52:09.519 --> 00:52:16.679
because that eggnog is pretty thin on
egg and very heavy on So Christmas morning
765
00:52:16.760 --> 00:52:22.320
comes, it's the this is this
is it, guys, this is this
766
00:52:22.480 --> 00:52:24.360
is the finale we've all been waiting
for. So Yeah. And and I
767
00:52:24.480 --> 00:52:29.360
want to point out that one little
thing we glossed over because there is,
768
00:52:29.440 --> 00:52:32.920
like A said, there's so much
in this movie that's great is Brisket.
769
00:52:34.199 --> 00:52:37.079
He tormented Brisket to the point of
breaking to finish the work. And when
770
00:52:37.119 --> 00:52:44.320
Briskett was like, no, because
the actress down there in the I don't
771
00:52:44.320 --> 00:52:46.840
need the name of the sorry,
just the character Catherine is before he comes
772
00:52:46.880 --> 00:52:50.039
down there, She's like, don't
do whatever he wants you to do.
773
00:52:50.280 --> 00:52:52.679
Don't do it, which is how
I would feel too. I'd be like,
774
00:52:52.039 --> 00:52:55.760
I know we're not gonna live.
I wouldn't do it either. So
775
00:52:55.840 --> 00:53:00.559
when he comes down and Brisket's like, I won't do it, he's he
776
00:53:00.639 --> 00:53:04.519
does. He does the evil thing
that evil people do in real life,
777
00:53:04.599 --> 00:53:08.880
which is when a person will resist
hurts someone else. Yes, because if
778
00:53:08.920 --> 00:53:14.239
you have a real heart and soul, which these people do not, then
779
00:53:14.639 --> 00:53:19.039
you can't handle to see someone else
suffer. So he starts kicking the hell
780
00:53:19.079 --> 00:53:22.880
out of her, and she's already
been beaten to near death multiple times,
781
00:53:22.679 --> 00:53:27.039
and then he starts strangling her.
Yes, and he tells Brisket like,
782
00:53:27.119 --> 00:53:29.320
she's gonna die right now if you
don't do it, so he agrees to
783
00:53:29.400 --> 00:53:32.960
it. So he's been electrocuting Brisket
non stop, tormenting him, tormenting her,
784
00:53:34.239 --> 00:53:37.280
And at one point before we get
to the big finale, he was
785
00:53:37.320 --> 00:53:39.480
even sitting there as Brisket was working
and just shocking him and drinking eggnog for
786
00:53:39.559 --> 00:53:44.360
the fuck of it. Brisket's not
even rest he's resisting. He's not even
787
00:53:44.400 --> 00:53:51.000
resisting anymore. He's not even like, I cannot overstate this is not played
788
00:53:51.039 --> 00:53:57.239
for laughs. It's done so well
that all you want in the world is
789
00:53:57.320 --> 00:54:00.039
for Brisket to be okay, is
to get out of this and also what
790
00:54:00.119 --> 00:54:02.880
we want to mention the guy in
the basement who lost his legs Eddie.
791
00:54:04.480 --> 00:54:07.320
There's a point when Eddie's back to
life and they've tied his hands up where
792
00:54:07.400 --> 00:54:12.039
I mean, he's just he's full
of anger, he's full of raid because
793
00:54:12.039 --> 00:54:15.599
there's a part where they're down there
as he's like coming to and they're like,
794
00:54:15.239 --> 00:54:17.360
if only your mother had been here
to blah blah blah, and he
795
00:54:17.480 --> 00:54:21.079
just lifts his head up and goes, I bet she was a fucking bitch,
796
00:54:21.280 --> 00:54:23.039
and they just beat the hell out
of him. But like, this
797
00:54:23.199 --> 00:54:27.000
movie left an impact on me.
I apologize. I feel like I'm interrupting
798
00:54:27.039 --> 00:54:30.360
you with David, but I love
this movie and I think that what they
799
00:54:30.440 --> 00:54:35.559
did with this movie is very special. Yeah, but also the worst part
800
00:54:35.679 --> 00:54:39.960
of me is so satisfied by what's
coming. So go on, David,
801
00:54:40.159 --> 00:54:53.400
take the wheel. Do You Even? Movie will be right back. Welcome
802
00:54:53.519 --> 00:55:00.280
back to Do You Even? Movie? All right? So Christmas morning,
803
00:55:00.360 --> 00:55:05.360
Brisket wakes up and he sees that
Eddie is chopping at his restraints with the
804
00:55:05.400 --> 00:55:07.840
broken Christmas ornaments that they've kicked down
earlier in the movie. He gets free
805
00:55:08.119 --> 00:55:13.400
and then we see that Briskett has
now Eddie tied to his back with Christmas
806
00:55:13.480 --> 00:55:16.159
lights, so they are back to
back and they can carry him. Yeah,
807
00:55:16.280 --> 00:55:20.199
they are going to break out.
They are going to the get free
808
00:55:20.480 --> 00:55:23.039
because our friend down there, she
is in no shape to leave, so
809
00:55:23.119 --> 00:55:27.559
they have to go get help.
Yeah, so they decide to put Eddie
810
00:55:27.599 --> 00:55:30.480
on his back and they start crawling
and that's when we see the Denise has
811
00:55:30.480 --> 00:55:31.880
woken up. She's getting ready for
work, and that's the Copple that we
812
00:55:31.920 --> 00:55:35.320
found out. She was a dispatcher
by the way, but still let's still
813
00:55:35.320 --> 00:55:37.639
a police officer, but it's different. So they come out of the basement.
814
00:55:37.719 --> 00:55:40.519
They're crawling around and they're hiding from
both Cindy and Denise because they have
815
00:55:40.599 --> 00:55:45.639
a discussion about how you know,
oh, another Hallmark like discussion about like,
816
00:55:45.719 --> 00:55:47.639
well, next year I'll be able
to help officially, and she's like
817
00:55:47.880 --> 00:55:53.119
I really like that, yeah,
and I Dave was laughing because Dave knows
818
00:55:53.239 --> 00:55:57.039
me, so he knows that I
have this weird thing where when somebody is
819
00:55:57.159 --> 00:56:00.480
unbelievably cruel, I get unbelievably cruel
about up their character. And since I
820
00:56:00.599 --> 00:56:04.159
know where the movie's going, when
she's like next Christmas, you know,
821
00:56:04.199 --> 00:56:07.559
I look forward to that. I'm
like, yeah about next Christmas. I'm
822
00:56:07.639 --> 00:56:09.480
like as bad as Eddie because Eddie's
just sitting there like because he's in the
823
00:56:09.599 --> 00:56:14.159
captain on his back and he has
the irons and he's just like over the
824
00:56:14.440 --> 00:56:16.440
door, over the fucking like he's
just gonna he's like ready to bring because
825
00:56:16.679 --> 00:56:20.400
we get the fake out at one
point because while Cindy, while Cindy and
826
00:56:20.760 --> 00:56:22.840
and Denise are talking, she's like, I can't find the messing cuff.
827
00:56:22.880 --> 00:56:24.840
Can you check the cupboard that's where
Brisket and Eddie are hiding at the cupboard,
828
00:56:24.880 --> 00:56:28.000
and Eddie is, yeah, he's
like just fucking open the door,
829
00:56:28.079 --> 00:56:30.840
open the door. And then she
finds the something to open the door.
830
00:56:30.000 --> 00:56:35.320
So then she pantry. Yeh,
pantry. So then Denise gets ready to
831
00:56:35.320 --> 00:56:37.239
go to work. By this point, Eddie and Brisket have snuff pass and
832
00:56:37.280 --> 00:56:39.440
I think they are out. Yeah
they are out. Yeah, they make
833
00:56:39.440 --> 00:56:42.719
it outside without him and he seeing. So Denise goes to your car.
834
00:56:42.880 --> 00:56:44.599
She gets a call on her phone. It's the bar and he's like,
835
00:56:44.639 --> 00:56:45.400
you know, hey, you know, I just wanted to say Mary Christmas,
836
00:56:45.440 --> 00:56:47.000
have a good day. And she's
like, I'll be back later,
837
00:56:47.320 --> 00:56:51.599
hangs up the phone, and then
Eddie just from the back seats, they
838
00:56:51.719 --> 00:56:57.960
just pop up Eddie, Eddie,
no cute, no silly, no,
839
00:56:58.159 --> 00:57:00.239
beats her to death, beats her
to death like and then some beats her
840
00:57:00.280 --> 00:57:04.000
to death, breaks her teeth with
the iron, breaks her phone, keeps
841
00:57:04.079 --> 00:57:06.679
hitting her like she's dead by the
first two, like three hits, and
842
00:57:06.760 --> 00:57:09.880
he's still going. And here's an
example of why the storytelling in this movie
843
00:57:10.000 --> 00:57:15.599
is is top notch. He's hitting
her and he's screaming and I mean he's
844
00:57:15.639 --> 00:57:20.199
screaming that that human like foam is
coming out of his mouth. Yeah,
845
00:57:20.239 --> 00:57:25.320
he's drooling on himself because he's so
primarily has to kill these people. Yeah,
846
00:57:27.039 --> 00:57:30.360
And as he's hitting her, he
breaks the key out of the ignition,
847
00:57:30.679 --> 00:57:34.000
which makes the car undrivable. And
then as he's beating on her,
848
00:57:34.039 --> 00:57:37.599
when when risk gets like, he
says, she's not fighting, she's not
849
00:57:37.719 --> 00:57:42.159
fighting, and he keeps hitting her. Then he bashes her phone without thinking
850
00:57:42.239 --> 00:57:45.840
yeah, because he's so unbelievably angry. And that is how you, without
851
00:57:45.920 --> 00:57:51.960
being cheap, set up what's about
to happen next. So they realize that
852
00:57:52.000 --> 00:57:54.519
since the car is undrivable, and
also Brisket has a flashback to Catherine and
853
00:57:54.559 --> 00:57:58.079
he's like, we have to go
back for her, we have to save
854
00:57:58.159 --> 00:58:01.519
her. So they go up to
the house and by this point everybody's waking
855
00:58:01.639 --> 00:58:06.000
up in the house, and the
first one up is Granny, who's talking
856
00:58:06.199 --> 00:58:08.920
to Cindy. But then Bart's angry
about something and Andy's trying to go get
857
00:58:08.960 --> 00:58:12.599
his work done with Brisket, so
they run into each other smashes eggs against
858
00:58:12.599 --> 00:58:14.920
her. She's frustrated in Granny.
He's like, I'll go get the door,
859
00:58:15.440 --> 00:58:16.679
opens the door, and Eddie,
as you heard in the trailer in
860
00:58:16.719 --> 00:58:21.639
the beginning of the episode, goes
Merry Christmas, bitch and serves that iron
861
00:58:21.960 --> 00:58:27.119
right into her face in the most
satisfying hit of the movie. I mean,
862
00:58:27.719 --> 00:58:32.440
it was so good. So from
that point on we are into Battle
863
00:58:32.519 --> 00:58:37.400
Royale because Granny hits the ground.
Now Andy's down to the basement, sees
864
00:58:37.440 --> 00:58:40.400
that Brisket is Eddie. You're both
gone. He's running up and outside Bart
865
00:58:40.480 --> 00:58:45.639
has found the cigars that Andy discarded
and he's pissed. Now too, here's
866
00:58:45.719 --> 00:58:52.079
Andy scream and now Brisky because he
realizes he's escaped, but doesn't realize that
867
00:58:52.199 --> 00:58:54.679
they've already off two family members with
a third right on the way. And
868
00:58:54.760 --> 00:58:58.599
we need to point out too that
Brisket, before going into the house,
869
00:58:58.760 --> 00:59:01.000
took down a hanging basket and yeah
there was a basket. There was a
870
00:59:01.079 --> 00:59:06.679
basket of point Settas. That's what
I'm talking about. Like Christmas is used
871
00:59:06.880 --> 00:59:09.400
to the fullist extent in this movie. It is not just a backdrop.
872
00:59:09.559 --> 00:59:14.599
It is all about Christmas. So
there is a hanging hook for a h
873
00:59:14.880 --> 00:59:17.679
for plants, and it's full of
point settas Christmas flowers. He takes the
874
00:59:17.679 --> 00:59:21.679
point sett Is out drops them and
the thing shatters and pulls the hook out
875
00:59:21.679 --> 00:59:24.480
of the ground because it is time
to f some mother f is in the
876
00:59:24.519 --> 00:59:30.239
a's So the first one besides first
one after Granny follows in with the abe.
877
00:59:30.320 --> 00:59:31.159
He comes out and he's like,
well, what's going on, and
878
00:59:31.800 --> 00:59:35.800
poor Briskets like, I'm so sorry
about it. He says, I'm sorry
879
00:59:35.880 --> 00:59:37.480
to the grandma and then he says
I'm sorry and he clocks him the head.
880
00:59:38.119 --> 00:59:43.079
But this is where again why the
movie's next level. Yeah this is
881
00:59:43.400 --> 00:59:45.719
and I'm sorry, I keep stealing
all the good stuff from you. I
882
00:59:45.360 --> 00:59:50.719
love this movie. I do you
really really do? As he's hitting him
883
00:59:51.559 --> 00:59:53.719
and saying I'm sorry, I'm sorry
in the news, he's like, I'm
884
00:59:53.800 --> 00:59:59.000
not sorry, I'm not sorry,
and I'm not stupid. I have friends
885
00:59:59.159 --> 01:00:04.400
and I'm not somebody would miss me. It's it's it's it's a turning points
886
01:00:04.519 --> 01:00:10.239
character for his character. Yes,
entirely. Oh so Abe gets it.
887
01:00:10.480 --> 01:00:14.079
He gets thrown into the Christmas tree. Christmas tree comes down, kind of
888
01:00:14.119 --> 01:00:15.280
been paling him on a couple of
the ornaments too. By this point,
889
01:00:15.320 --> 01:00:20.639
now Cindy has found out what's going
on, but Catherine has also escaped from
890
01:00:20.679 --> 01:00:23.840
the basement and Catherine lays into that
bitch like it's going out of style.
891
01:00:24.039 --> 01:00:28.039
Yeah. So Bart's got a cleaver. He's going at Eddie and keep in
892
01:00:28.119 --> 01:00:30.920
mind, tied back to back still, so they're both fighting, Eddie on
893
01:00:30.639 --> 01:00:35.920
his back and punching, yeah,
and then us fighting Andy getting punched and
894
01:00:35.960 --> 01:00:37.960
the big guys on the other side
punching. Yeah. It's just it is
895
01:00:38.599 --> 01:00:44.239
mayhem. It's like total total mayhem, super awesome. But super Scary gets
896
01:00:44.280 --> 01:00:46.360
the cleaver away from Bart and he's
like, unplugged me. So they unplug
897
01:00:46.480 --> 01:00:50.559
him. Now Eddie is completely free
and Brisket is just wailing on Andy and
898
01:00:50.679 --> 01:00:52.679
he's telling him, you know,
like like Enriquez said, I have friends
899
01:00:52.760 --> 01:00:55.480
and fuck you and all this stuff. He's just letting out all of the
900
01:00:55.599 --> 01:01:00.960
things that he's been told by Andy
and by anyone else's ever been a fucking
901
01:01:00.039 --> 01:01:04.119
prick to him. Yeah, and
it's beautiful, It absolutely is. And
902
01:01:04.199 --> 01:01:07.199
at one point it's really beautiful.
Eddie gets uh, he gets free of
903
01:01:07.280 --> 01:01:09.400
Bart, but Bart unfortunately gets the
upper hand on him with the Cleaver kills
904
01:01:09.519 --> 01:01:13.280
Eddie. So we lose Eddie.
So before we i mean, it is
905
01:01:13.440 --> 01:01:16.519
left ambiguous, but probably kills Eddie. So by this point then Catherine has
906
01:01:16.599 --> 01:01:21.599
now beaten Cindy in the kitchen with
a rolling pin. Yeah. They have
907
01:01:21.679 --> 01:01:24.280
a really excellent fight scene that's very
I mean, like it's none of this
908
01:01:24.400 --> 01:01:29.280
has done Portland. And she ends
up holding her face down in a file
909
01:01:29.400 --> 01:01:32.760
and a pile of flour for making
usually for making cross cookies, it's the
910
01:01:32.800 --> 01:01:37.239
cookie powder a bat it probably is, yeah, but usually when you make
911
01:01:37.280 --> 01:01:39.719
that thing, you're making dough.
Yeah, dough's making the dough for feats.
912
01:01:39.760 --> 01:01:43.760
Yeah, So she pushes her face
into the hole in the in the
913
01:01:43.960 --> 01:01:46.480
flower for the dough for the eggs
to go in and breaks her head with
914
01:01:46.639 --> 01:01:53.679
a rolling pin, so she dies
in this pile of flour. Poetic satisfying.
915
01:01:54.280 --> 01:01:59.480
So now by this point Bart has
been stabbed by Catherine, so Bart's
916
01:01:59.480 --> 01:02:01.159
out of the picture. So it
is literally just Brisket and Andy, and
917
01:02:01.840 --> 01:02:06.679
Briskett has wrapped the Christmas cords around
the Christmas lights around his neck. He's
918
01:02:06.800 --> 01:02:09.199
choking him. Andy gets the upper
hand at some point, but then Catherine
919
01:02:09.239 --> 01:02:14.400
turns on the switch and now Andy
is being shocked exactly like he's been doing
920
01:02:14.440 --> 01:02:16.599
to Brisket. The entire foll he
gets be fuck electrocuted out of him,
921
01:02:16.679 --> 01:02:22.800
and Brisket, in a moment of
triumph, grabs the bowl of eggnog and
922
01:02:22.920 --> 01:02:27.920
says, mister Robillard, I quit
and chucks it with the liquid, setting
923
01:02:28.000 --> 01:02:31.840
Andy on fire while the lights are
going off because they like a lot more
924
01:02:31.960 --> 01:02:35.639
nog than they do. Egg in
there and see if they set it all
925
01:02:35.760 --> 01:02:37.840
up. Yes, he did such
a good job. And then another reason
926
01:02:37.920 --> 01:02:43.239
this is a big deal for Brisket. They established multiple times that Brisket really
927
01:02:43.360 --> 01:02:45.920
has nothing else to live for but
work and is terrified of losing his job.
928
01:02:46.000 --> 01:02:49.920
Yeah, there's a part where he's
literally making an argument when he's half
929
01:02:50.000 --> 01:02:52.639
conscious in the basement about he's like
before one ke, I get thirty six
930
01:02:52.760 --> 01:02:59.280
days a year vacation. It is
if you've ever had a job you hate
931
01:02:59.360 --> 01:03:06.320
it. It is very, very
powerful the way he's like defending subconsciously a
932
01:03:06.480 --> 01:03:09.159
job that is literally literally killing it. Yeah, Like he is going to
933
01:03:09.239 --> 01:03:13.320
die because of this. So I
just wanted to mention that real quick,
934
01:03:13.320 --> 01:03:16.079
because that's another amazing moment. So
when he says I quit, it's actually
935
01:03:16.159 --> 01:03:21.239
kind of bigger than killing it,
and so yeah, so then he's on
936
01:03:21.360 --> 01:03:24.840
fire and as the greatest monster of
the film, his head melt His head
937
01:03:24.960 --> 01:03:29.320
does melt in, yeah, like
full blown melts. So he carried brisket,
938
01:03:29.400 --> 01:03:31.639
grabs Catherine, carries her out the
door, and he's looking up at
939
01:03:31.679 --> 01:03:36.159
the sky and you know that they're
they're out there, they're celebrating, And
940
01:03:36.239 --> 01:03:37.199
he looks up at the sky and
he's like, I don't think it's gonna
941
01:03:37.199 --> 01:03:42.519
be a white Christmas. And Catherine
goes, we're in southern California. She
942
01:03:42.599 --> 01:03:45.920
says it in a nice way.
She's like, southern California and Brisket's like,
943
01:03:46.000 --> 01:03:47.880
I know, I was just hoping. And then she looks back at
944
01:03:47.920 --> 01:03:53.400
him and says Merry Christmas, which
is which is oh gosh, tears,
945
01:03:53.960 --> 01:03:58.639
which is Brisket's character. Yeah that
She's like, well, it's you know,
946
01:03:58.719 --> 01:04:00.000
it's southern California. He's like,
I know, I just hope hoped,
947
01:04:00.079 --> 01:04:06.599
because that's him because even at the
beginning of the film, when he
948
01:04:06.760 --> 01:04:10.960
has nobody who seems to care about
him, nobody's going to come to his
949
01:04:11.079 --> 01:04:16.199
Christmas party, nothing, he's still
all smiles, yeah, and Merry Christmas,
950
01:04:16.480 --> 01:04:19.239
and I hope you have a great
Christmas, and you know, and
951
01:04:19.400 --> 01:04:28.400
and and so that moment, to
me, it's it's it's what it said
952
01:04:28.440 --> 01:04:30.480
to me. And you can tell
me if you think this is right or
953
01:04:30.519 --> 01:04:34.280
not. What it said to me
is that the good part of him didn't
954
01:04:34.480 --> 01:04:40.280
die when he changed. I agree, because a part of him did die
955
01:04:40.840 --> 01:04:44.119
and it needed to, yes,
But the good part of him, the
956
01:04:44.280 --> 01:04:46.920
thing about him that makes him him
still there. Well. And I think
957
01:04:46.960 --> 01:04:51.199
also too, with him getting through
to Catherine, it's just it's a beautiful
958
01:04:51.400 --> 01:04:55.400
shared moment. Yeah, yeah,
because she's like loving on Christmas. Yeah,
959
01:04:55.760 --> 01:04:58.920
and uh, just no, you
know if you ever wanted to know,
960
01:04:59.000 --> 01:05:00.840
Hey, what kind of guy are
you? Like? Really, I
961
01:05:00.960 --> 01:05:05.679
am tearing up over the end of
Mercy Christmas, a twenty seventeen Christmas horror
962
01:05:05.679 --> 01:05:10.440
movie about cannibalism. Yes, because
it was that damn good Yes. And
963
01:05:10.559 --> 01:05:14.079
the final shot we get is you
know that she said Merry Christmas and they've
964
01:05:14.119 --> 01:05:16.039
shared their moment and then all of
a sudden, whoa hold on, Okay,
965
01:05:16.159 --> 01:05:18.760
you missed one thing. Though it's
really great. As they're sharing that
966
01:05:18.840 --> 01:05:21.639
moment, they do the shot from
straight up us yes, yes, yes,
967
01:05:21.840 --> 01:05:26.360
and then it gets closer straight above
yeah, and then it cuts back
968
01:05:26.360 --> 01:05:30.800
to bottom level. There are Christmas
carolers standing there and shot, oh my
969
01:05:30.920 --> 01:05:34.519
god, and they're like, please
call nine one one. You want to
970
01:05:34.519 --> 01:05:38.960
say what she says? She and
she's like, I don't know what's happened.
971
01:05:39.239 --> 01:05:42.599
I want to report out whatever report
I don't know. I don't know
972
01:05:42.679 --> 01:05:45.519
why. There's people bleeding up,
please send please send help. And then
973
01:05:45.599 --> 01:05:49.320
that is the end, my friends, of the twenty seventeen Mercy Christmas,
974
01:05:49.400 --> 01:05:53.679
a film that I cannot recommend enough
you watch that is so good. I
975
01:05:53.760 --> 01:05:58.599
mean, the final thoughts with it
is while it's a very dark holiday horror
976
01:05:58.599 --> 01:06:01.880
comedy. Mercy Christmas just offers quick
run time, simple story, but characters
977
01:06:01.960 --> 01:06:06.079
that you just latch onto and then
once they get their come up and it's
978
01:06:06.159 --> 01:06:11.119
just so satisfying. But also just
the spirit of Christmas that still survives.
979
01:06:11.280 --> 01:06:14.440
Is a great character arc for Brisket. I mean, Briskett's one of the
980
01:06:14.440 --> 01:06:16.599
best characters I've seen in a movie
ever. I'm not even not just an
981
01:06:16.639 --> 01:06:19.880
indie movie. So it's just a
phenomenal character. He absolutely is, And
982
01:06:19.960 --> 01:06:24.280
I mean it's it's one of those
movies that the bond that him and Catherine
983
01:06:24.320 --> 01:06:27.840
form really rack up the hero factor
for him, and it's it's the best
984
01:06:28.000 --> 01:06:30.400
happy ending that you could get for
a movie like this, which is what
985
01:06:30.440 --> 01:06:32.119
we said at the beginning, isn't
common with these movies. Well, and
986
01:06:32.199 --> 01:06:35.480
what I picked up on when he
was beating Andy, you know, before
987
01:06:35.480 --> 01:06:39.039
he killed him. Yeah, he
even said like, I have friends,
988
01:06:39.119 --> 01:06:42.719
and I think he was referring to
Eddie and her. I think that's what
989
01:06:42.800 --> 01:06:45.320
he was saying, because because they
all bonded down in the basement talking about
990
01:06:45.320 --> 01:06:51.119
their lives and stuff and fuck yeah, yeah, no, I cannot this.
991
01:06:51.480 --> 01:06:55.880
This to me is a rent it. You can find it streaming readily
992
01:06:55.960 --> 01:06:59.760
available right now. Yeah. But
if it's one of those that you you
993
01:06:59.840 --> 01:07:01.400
know, haven't put offer, it's
like you don't have access to whatever it
994
01:07:01.480 --> 01:07:03.920
is. If you rent this,
you're going to have a good time with
995
01:07:04.000 --> 01:07:06.880
this. Yes, it's it's so
much fun. Yeah, I mean while
996
01:07:06.880 --> 01:07:11.079
it's dark, like I said,
it's just the payoff at that finale is
997
01:07:11.239 --> 01:07:15.000
so well earned. It's so satisfying
after the hell you have to go through
998
01:07:15.079 --> 01:07:17.079
to get there. It absolutely is. So do you have any final thoughts?
999
01:07:18.079 --> 01:07:21.000
I mean, I feel like I've
raved about this movie so heart to
1000
01:07:21.119 --> 01:07:25.440
lee throughout the whole show that you
probably already know my opinion. Yes,
1001
01:07:25.599 --> 01:07:29.519
absolutely so are we gonna do our? I'm gonna do my recommendation. I've
1002
01:07:29.599 --> 01:07:32.800
changed it since we started because I
just horror comedy falling into this. I
1003
01:07:33.079 --> 01:07:36.280
have a love and I know Enriquez
too, of the nineteen ninety film Rabbit
1004
01:07:36.400 --> 01:07:41.719
ninety ninety nine film Ravenous, which
is Guy Pierce and Robert Carlyle where they
1005
01:07:41.800 --> 01:07:45.159
are in a remote military outpost and
it turns out that there may or may
1006
01:07:45.199 --> 01:07:48.000
not be a win to go that's
infiltrated the fort well of sorts. Yeah,
1007
01:07:48.199 --> 01:07:51.000
they don't really say when toy Go
do that. They say it Windigo
1008
01:07:51.000 --> 01:07:54.719
will legends mentioned heavily. Okay,
I mean I knew that that was what
1009
01:07:54.760 --> 01:07:57.400
they were referencing. Yeah, so
that's that's your recommendation. I'll pull.
1010
01:07:57.440 --> 01:07:59.159
I'll put the other one in there, just because it's a Chris movie.
1011
01:07:59.199 --> 01:08:03.480
If you want a their bonkers and
pretty I would say enjoyable Christmas movie Christmas
1012
01:08:03.480 --> 01:08:06.880
Buddy Christmas Joebego's film that came out
last year, twenty twenty two. Christmas.
1013
01:08:06.920 --> 01:08:10.559
Even toy just wants to get drunken
party, but when a robotic Santa
1014
01:08:10.559 --> 01:08:15.039
Claus at a nearby toy store goes
haywire and begins a rampage killing spree through
1015
01:08:15.079 --> 01:08:17.760
her small town, she's forced into
battle for survival. And that's the reason
1016
01:08:17.880 --> 01:08:23.840
that I think that's a good recommendation
to watch is because it is a Christmas
1017
01:08:23.920 --> 01:08:28.279
movie. It's all about Christmas.
It's got some very legitimate characters, but
1018
01:08:28.399 --> 01:08:31.439
it's also bonkers, pretty damn satisfying. And also, just if you're not
1019
01:08:31.520 --> 01:08:33.359
a fan of the word fuck,
you may want to skip that one.
1020
01:08:33.439 --> 01:08:35.880
Yeah, that's a fair point.
And as far as I want to point
1021
01:08:35.920 --> 01:08:40.359
out, so between stream it,
rented or buy it. Yeah, I
1022
01:08:40.399 --> 01:08:43.880
would say buy it if you're a
horror movie fan. Okay, stream it
1023
01:08:43.920 --> 01:08:46.079
if you're just kind of a horror
movie fan, because you probably won't want
1024
01:08:46.119 --> 01:08:49.359
to watch it again and again because
it is really heavy. Yes, there
1025
01:08:49.399 --> 01:08:51.680
are some movies that I love,
but you got to earn it yet to
1026
01:08:51.680 --> 01:08:56.439
earn it, And and you know
I don't put on funny games every other
1027
01:08:56.520 --> 01:08:59.119
week. You know, I put
on funny games every so often when I
1028
01:08:59.760 --> 01:09:03.399
at this point, really when I
have to do a podcast. Yeah,
1029
01:09:04.039 --> 01:09:09.199
So that is it for Mercy Christmas
twenty seventeen, directed by Ryan Nelson and
1030
01:09:09.319 --> 01:09:12.880
Ryan if you are listening watching this, please reach out to us. We
1031
01:09:12.960 --> 01:09:15.439

Don't have him on my Facebook. It
1032
01:09:15.439 --> 01:09:17.239
wouldn't surprise me, but I would. I would personally love to hear from
1033
01:09:17.279 --> 01:09:20.039
you and hear the story of this
movie because I just I really think that
1034
01:09:20.159 --> 01:09:24.680
this is an underrated gym that more
really need to find, especially this time
1035
01:09:24.680 --> 01:09:29.520
of year. Yeah. I agree. Mercy Christmas absolutely positively a must watch
1036
01:09:29.920 --> 01:09:33.800

it around because I really love this
movie. Yeah. And also, you

actually I actually wanted Dave to just
know he was a good friend because he

was a buddy. He was working
with me on the show and just like
