Henrique Couto and David Denoyer ring in the chaos of Get Crazy (1983), Allan Arkush’s cult rock-and-roll comedy starring Daniel Stern, Allen Garfield, Malcolm McDowell, Ed Begley Jr., Gail Edwards, Stacey Nelkin, Lee Ving, Lou Reed and Howard Kaylan. At the fictional Saturn Theater, Neil Allen and Willie Loman scramble to stage a huge New Year’s Eve concert after beloved promoter Max Wolfe suffers an apparent heart attack, while corporate rival Colin Beverly schemes to seize and demolish the venue.
The episode tours a backstage world of sabotage, romance, pyrotechnics, drugs and nonstop sight gags. King Blues, Nada, Piggy, Captain Cloud and egomaniacal superstar Reggie Wanker cycle across the stage as a fire spreads below, a bomb counts down to midnight and Neil tries to keep the show alive. Henrique and David compare the movie’s speed and absurdity to Airplane! without the restraint, praising its crowded frame, musical caricatures, talking-body-part punch line and sincere belief that a scruffy theater community can resist corporate homogenization.
Arkush and co-writer Danny Opatoshu drew on their work at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, converting late-1960s concert memories into a contemporary 1983 New Year’s spectacle. The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles stood in for the Saturn shortly before renovation, allowing the production to treat the location roughly. The hosts trace the movie’s rock mythology through Reed’s reclusive Auden and McDowell’s Mick Jagger-like Reggie, then unpack oddities such as Electric Larry and performers with genuine Fillmore connections.
Release history explains why the movie became so difficult to see. Its financing functioned as a tax shelter, the theatrical launch received little promotion, and the picture and sound elements were later considered lost. David remembers first receiving a VHS-to-DVD copy because no proper disc existed. When Kino Lorber located the elements and prepared a Blu-ray, a film that had survived through collectors and word of mouth finally received a substantial restoration and supplements worthy of its production story.
