Game Night (2018) Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, & Jesse Plemons

Henrique and David roll the dice on Game Night (2018), John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s action comedy about friendly competition becoming dangerously real. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star as Max and Annie, a married couple whose weekly gathering is disrupted by Max’s charismatic brother Brooks. Kyle Chandler plays Brooks, while Jesse Plemons steals scenes as Gary, the unsettling police-officer neighbor desperate to rejoin the group.
Brooks promises an elaborate kidnapping mystery, then real criminals burst into his rented house and drag him away. Max, Annie and their friends initially applaud the violence as immersive theater. Mark Perez’s screenplay keeps escalating that misunderstanding through a dive-bar rescue, an improvised bullet-removal operation, a rich man’s secret fight club and a Fabergé egg passed from guest to guest in a single-take-style chase.
The hosts praise Bateman and McAdams as a believable comic team, especially Annie dancing with what she thinks is a prop gun and discovering that Max’s bullet has already exited his arm. Lamorne Morris and Kylie Bunbury’s Kevin and Michelle turn a long-running jealousy dispute into the episode’s “not Denzel” joke, while Billy Magnussen and Sharon Horgan add another mismatched pair. Plemons makes Gary’s precise speech, devotion to his dog and elaborate scheme to rejoin the group both funny and unnerving.
Henrique and David remember seeing Game Night together during a period when broad theatrical comedy felt scarce. They appreciate how its visual design supports the premise: tilt-shift aerials make neighborhoods resemble a game board, camera moves turn doors and rooms into pieces and recurring sequences echo Operation, Hot Potato, Charades and Simon Says. Beneath the set pieces, Max must stop competing with Brooks and decide whether fear is keeping him and Annie from starting a family.
Production discussion covers Bateman’s early plan to direct, Daley and Goldstein’s work reshaping Gary and a cast game night held before filming. Henrique calls it a buy-it; David gives it a rent-it with an enthusiastic buy-it caveat. Both celebrate the twists, balanced action and comedy, and recommend The Game, Observe and Report and The Nice Guys as companions for viewers who enjoy jokes with a darker edge.
