Henrique and David begin their Halloween-horror run with Cobweb (2023), Samuel Bodin’s feature debut from a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin. Woody Norman plays Peter, an isolated eight-year-old who hears knocking and a girl’s voice inside his bedroom wall. His parents, Carol and Mark, insist that the sounds are imaginary, but their controlling behavior makes the house feel increasingly unsafe. Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr turn parental reassurance into something deeply unsettling.
Peter is bullied at school and forbidden to trick-or-treat, leaving teacher Miss Devine, played by Cleopatra Coleman, as his only reliable adult ally. The voice encourages him to distrust his parents and eventually reveals a buried family secret: Sarah, Peter’s monstrous older sister, has been imprisoned within the house. Henrique and David unpack how the story moves from psychological childhood fear to violent fairy tale and finally a full creature feature without abandoning Peter’s point of view.
The hosts praise Philip Lozano’s cinematography, the warm orange light and enormous shadows that trap Peter between his parents, and bedrooms composed to make an adult viewer feel small again. The decaying pumpkin patch, oversized furnishings, sinister wallpaper and hidden basement door turn the home into a character. Production took place in Sofia, Bulgaria—not in the story’s setting—with the street, exterior and multiple interior rooms constructed as controlled sets.
David remembers discovering Cobweb after missing its brief theatrical run and urging Henrique to watch once the third act transformed the movie. Henrique is equally impressed by its quiet buildup, precise lighting and unpredictable monster reveal. The episode opens with their contemporaneous capsule review of The Front Room and later detours into a darkly comic workplace memory about an ill-conceived attempt to eliminate a gopher using generator exhaust.
Both hosts give Cobweb a buy-it rating and recommend it as an underseen modern Halloween movie.
