Cobweb (2023) Chilling Secrets of This Horror Thriller!
Henrique and David begin their Halloween-horror run with Cobweb (2023), Samuel Bodin’s feature debut from a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin. Woody Norman plays Peter, an isolated eight-year-old who hears knocking and a girl’s voice inside his bedroom wall. His parents, Carol and Mark, insist that the sounds are imaginary, but their controlling behavior makes the house feel increasingly unsafe. Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr turn parental reassurance into something deeply unsettling.
Peter is bullied at school and forbidden to trick-or-treat, leaving teacher Miss Devine, played by Cleopatra Coleman, as his only reliable adult ally. The voice encourages him to distrust his parents and eventually reveals a buried family secret: Sarah, Peter’s monstrous older sister, has been imprisoned within the house. Henrique and David unpack how the story moves from psychological childhood fear to violent fairy tale and finally a full creature feature without abandoning Peter’s point of view.
The hosts praise Philip Lozano’s cinematography, the warm orange light and enormous shadows that trap Peter between his parents, and bedrooms composed to make an adult viewer feel small again. The decaying pumpkin patch, oversized furnishings, sinister wallpaper and hidden basement door turn the home into a character. Production took place in Sofia, Bulgaria—not in the story’s setting—with the street, exterior and multiple interior rooms constructed as controlled sets.
David remembers discovering Cobweb after missing its brief theatrical run and urging Henrique to watch once the third act transformed the movie. Henrique is equally impressed by its quiet buildup, precise lighting and unpredictable monster reveal. The episode opens with their contemporaneous capsule review of The Front Room and later detours into a darkly comic workplace memory about an ill-conceived attempt to eliminate a gopher using generator exhaust.
Both hosts give Cobweb a buy-it rating and recommend it as an underseen modern Halloween movie. They single out Norman’s vulnerable performance, Caplan and Starr’s unnerving restraint, Miss Devine’s commitment to protecting Peter and the final suggestion that escaping the house will not end his fear. Before I Wake, The Visit and Malignant provide their companion recommendations, linking nightmares made physical, threatening families and monstrous sibling secrets.

0:05 It's okay, no more nightmares tonight. Peter threw this. Yes, Peter has an overactive imagination. You don't hear anything. It's just a factory. In a world where podcasts reign supreme. Two friends dare to ask. Do You Even? Movie?
0:48 Hosted by filmmaker Enrique Kuto and movie aficionado David Denyer. Spoiler alert, Hello, my friends and spookies. Welcome to a very special Halloween Do You Even? Movie? I'm, of course your host, Enrique Kuto here with my co host David. You won't take just one? Denoyer gets, and I'm spooky greeting. Were you were you the one? You were one of those kids? Right? You just take more candy than it said.
1:30 I may have been guilty of that. I knew it. I knew it. But I like twigs. Fun sized twigs are the best. I have a problem with considering a smaller portion to be the funds. To me, the sack is a fun signed. What's fun about less candy. That I feel like this is like what's the deal with airline food? But yes, yes, as a special treat. I know what you're thinking, Hey, this is this is October. I think first, Yeah, yeah, that we're airing this that's not Halloween, Well yes it is. So we're doing a very special all Halloween Movies month here at Weekly Spooky and do you even movie? Which is sister podcasts in a way, and speaking of sisters.
2:15 Oh man, spoilers. Tonight's film is a more recent entry into the world of Halloween horror films, a little movie from twenty twenty three called Cobweb, and we'll be talking all about that here tonight. Absolutely, I was so happy to get to show this to you that you picked that you allowed me to bring this to a Dave pic to the show again. I mean allow is a strong word. You said, let's do Cobweb. What I told you it takes place on Halloween. Yeah, well my exact words. We were like, I want to do Cobweb and I was like, no, only ones on Halloween. It does take looks on Halloween. I was like, oh, all right, the end. That's the pre production meetings for this show are are very much what about this and then me going almost exclusively cool.
3:03 Yeah, so, since it is the spooky season, should we talk about the last spooky movie we saw in theaters? Real quick? Uh? Sure? Front room? Oh, Yeah, we did. We caught that. Last week we saw The front Room starring Brandy. Yes, Brandy, what's what's her actual full name? Now, she'll always just be Brandy in my millennial heart. That's fair, so especially my elder millennial heart. So yeah. The latest day twenty four film The front Room starring Brandy Norwood, Aaron Bernapp, and Catherine Hunter. Directed by Max Eggers and Sam. Eggers, the the other Eggers brothers. I don't know I feel about the fact that is it Robert Eggers. Robert Eggs, He's had this big career and then his brother. Then you hear this movie by the Eggs brothers, You're like, oh, it's not that Eggers's he's off doing his own thing.
3:52 But I have to say, for a feature directorial debut, hell of a debut. It was strong. Yeah, it was definitely strong. It it was gross and weirdss and honestly much more entertaining than the trailer made me think it would be. Absolutely the trailer made me want to see it, but I was I was worried it was going to be overly preachy or or just I don't know, maybe silly. Yeah, it definitely had a silly vibe too in the trailer, because I mean the story, if you're not familiar with it, is a newly pregnant couple are forced to take in and ailing a strange step mother. That's that is the plot basically.
4:33 I mean, well, what more do you need? Yeah, I mean that that's that's all that that that is the basics of it. So if from there it just it had a lot of vibes like Saint Maud, except better. I would say that's in a way that's fair. Eah, but uh, the paranoia of the film, the intensity of it, the obscure imagery, I mean, it's it's one I'm not gonna forget. I mean, you know, yeah, as long as you stop sticking the Q TIFFs so damn far in your ears? Yeah yeah, yeah, so no. But I really enjoyed it the front room, and I would recommend if it's still playing in theaters near you, it's pretty Are you sure it's a twenty four and not in them? I thought it was a twenty four because I remember what I thought, feel like when it started. I was like a twenty four years Like, what who else would it be? I feel like you said that.
5:16 That would be twenty four. Okay, okay, well fair enough. Yeah, but uh, it's been a bit more of a limited release. So if you see it playing in a theater near you, I do highly recommend you drop what you're doing, especially if it's a small child. Yes, you just drop it. Go check out the front room. I thought it was really scary. And you saw afraid, correct? I did? Yes? How was How was that? That was a ton of fun. That's another one that kind of came and didn't really make a big splash. Yeah, and I don't think it deserves to be maligned. It's it's not a reinventing the Wheel kind of movie, but it is a taut thriller about a family under siege from their basically their home internet system. I don't want to say her yeah, because then she'll think I'm trying to change the background light. Yeah, but no, it was fun.
6:06 It had one of the biggest downer endings okay, that I have seen in a while. Awesome. When Rachel and I were seeing it, we both were like, whoa, Okay, they're going on that's the ending. I mean, it was strong and there were a few there were several twists and turns. You weren't expecting that I thought were really cool. But yeah, it just ends in like a when you consider the fact that large language models, which we often refer to as artificial intelligence, but they're not exactly the same thing. Ye, that they're becoming such a common part of our day every day, when algorithms are a major part of our day, that movie definitely praise on those concerns and fears.
6:48 Pretty well, I'm excited to check it out finally. I mean it's it is already on streaming, I believe. Yeah, yeah, it came to streaming. Yeah, that's why I caught it. I noticed it was like a Monday and there was one show that day, so I was like, I want to in the theater and it was it was worth the time. There you go. I liked it quite a bit. Speaking of downer endings, guess that I revisited a couple days ago. What's that it comes at night? Well, that calling that a downer ending is kind of an under cell David. Yeah, I love that movie. It's so good. It is even better on a second watch. The only film in the history of my life and possibly the entire world, that I posted a photo of my ticket stuff on Instagram and someone came at me.
7:30 Not I mean, they weren't being a total jerk, but just saying like, that movie sucked. I hated it. Blah blah blah blah blah. Yeah, and then we discussed it back and forth and by the end of we had to move it to DMS so we didn't spoil it. Yeah, but by the end of the disketch, she was like, it really does work on that level. It does. I actually want to watch it again. I think I like it now. Yeah, And I was like, well, that's never that's never happened. It's a crisp ninety minutes. I mean probably like eighty five with credits, but it's it flies by. Oh for sure, it's so good. Yeah, that'd be a good one to visit it your Halloween season. Absolutely, But yes, so we're gonna be watching or we're gonna be talking about Cobweb from twenty twenty three, which you can watch right now with a subscription to Hulu. Yes, so if you haven't watched it yet and you want to pause this podcast and give it a watch, I highly recommend that. Yes, But I will say, even after we spoil everything, the atmosphere the acting. The performances make it work regardless.
8:28 Absolutely. I think what really sold me the first time watching it, besides the third act twist or reveal, was just overall I felt like a little kid with Peter watching this movie, like it the way that it shot, the way that it has the composition of him in his bedroom, especially with things being bigger than him as a little kid. It's just it took me back to being a kid watching movies during Halloween time, like on AMC, Monsterfest or sci Fi and whatnot. Like it was, this was just a super fun movie. Well, and here's a piece of trivia. I bet you didn't yet, Oh, I happen to know dot cobweb. Go ahead. They cast a child that was not the size of a normal adult in order to make the rooms seem bigger.
9:09 I hate you right now. I hate you. You read to get into it. But before we do, I do want to remind you if you have a film you'd like us to consider reviewing. If you have a question about the show, or even a question about a movie, we've answered a few of those two. You can email us at do you even movie Pod at gmail dot com, or go to douevenmovie dot com and get a hold of us. So I just wanted to mention that I don't think we have any emails this week. For shame. I am so sad for shame. We need more. We'll find out at the end of the show when I take my phone out of my pocket. But I don't want to be tempted to fiddle with it. That's fair. So sore you ready to get into this, Let's jump right in.
9:51 Cobweb CO twenty twenty three, one hour and twenty eight minutes. Rate it R for violence and some some language. Now I have to say, I don't know that there's been another film called Cobweb. There's a Korean film I think from twenty five to three count like the same year. Wow, that's funny though. Yeah, well my point, my point is the perfect tagline is what they really missed out on. What's that The tagline should have been, you know, cobweb and then it'd be like it's still in your hair ooh, because yeah, you ever walk into a cobweb a. Lot lately, more than I would like to admit, honestly. What what? What rooms are you not entering anymore that are covered in cobweb.
10:32 It's not that, so, you know, I said on the show a couple of weeks ago that, yeah, it is also twenty twenty three that the Korean cobweb did come out. Oh my gosh. I did say on the show a couple of weeks ago that I did have some car repairs done recently, some some maintenance of my car, and therefore I didn't have my car for a few days. So I drove around a spare truck that my father has, and there is a spider that lives inside the mirror of the left side. It lives inside a Russian space station, a mirror. A mirror, It lives inside the mirror on the side of the car, and I brush away its web several times, and then like it felt like it was getting back at me, because every day I would go to walk to this truck, I would walk through another cob web, like from the coming around the front of the car.
11:15 Well, you are in its home. That reminds me of that meme where it's like me destroys a spider web. Spider wow, me puts up fake cobwebs for Halloween. Spider wow. Yeah, pretty great. Yeah, you know, we filmed Haunted House and Sorority Row in this little quasi abandoned house. Yeah, in Waynesville, Ohio. We never took the fake cobwebs down, and years later when we came back to film again, real cobwebs that intertwined with the fake cobweb had so we just kind of let nature take its course. Was Haunted House, the movie where we also had all the dead ladybugs in the front area. Yes, so what We filmed the first half of that film at the end of September. Yeah, and then we came back the first weekend of November to film the rest of it. So in that time there had been a freeze, so there were just piles of dead, dead ladybugs all over because the house had filled up with them. Yeah, when it was warmer out and yeah, yeah.
12:12 I remember we were joking about how if they spelled get out, it would have been really funny. Yeah, you know, it was like the Amityville Horror, but a little bit more adorable. Yeah, in a sense. So Cobweb is directed by Samuel Boden. He gets his start in two thousand and eight by directing the Gaujira music video for Vacuity. He goes to shoot in twenty thirteen, a series of which he writes in directs called Lazy Company Tank. In twenty sixteen, he also writes and directs Mary Anne. In twenty nineteen, he also writes and directs. He does Cobweb in twenty twenty three, and then this year he actually did Furies on Netflix. Oh series or I think it's a serious movie. I can't remember which. I thought it was a movie. I've already watched it, but I think i'd seen it right. I've heard good. I just haven't had chance to watch it yet. Moved out to our writer. We have Chris Tomlas Devlin. He has two credits on his writing, first one being in twenty twenty two the Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Netflix.
13:01 One Oh Yes, that I was not expecting. And then goes Cobweb in twenty twenty three. So this is his second second writing. Wow. Yeah, okay, Well, I mean I didn't hate that Texas Chainsaw twenty two. It wasn't great moments, but no, it's fine. It's just the twenty eighteen borrowing Halloween with Sally Hardesty character just still irks me a lot. Well, except that they didn't like do any of the awesome things that Halloween twenty eighteen did with a returning character. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A cinematographer is Philip Lazano. He gets his start in two thousand and two. He does a lot of second assistant camera and second unit stuff Transporter in two thousand and two, quicksand two thousand and three, Something's Gotta Give Before Sunset, Sex and the City episodes, District B thirteen, Christmas in Love, Unleashed, the Black Box, The Tiger Brigades, Sopranos in two thousand and six, Devilwares Prada, A good Year, Mister Bean's Holiday Rush Hour, Mears Enter the Void was one that caught my eye.
13:57 Oh okay yeah. Followed by Julian and Julia Now You See Me, Night Fair, The nun To two as recently as last year, but it wasn't until twenty eleven. He gets his first director of photography credit with Destination One. He shoots the Crew in twenty fifteen, Carpenter Brutes Turbo Killer, which is a music video. Let's Dance in twenty nineteen, Maryanna in twenty nineteen, so another Bodin project. He does Blood Machines, the Shutter film in twenty nineteen. I don't know if I watched that one. I didn't get a chance to watch it, but I've heard it is wild. It was one of those like early ones that was like the original Shutter Yeah, Resents Thing a Redemption Day in twenty twenty one, Darknet series in twenty twenty two, Can's Confidential in twenty twenty three, shoots Cobweb in twenty twenty three, followed by Furries or you Know What's gonna happen?
14:38 Got Him? Got Him Kids? Wait, where the where's the one there? Please? No David Furys in twenty twenty four. You know somebody just won ten bucks because they were betting on who was gonna say Furries first on the show That's Fair, and it was David. That's Fair. Do You Even? Movie will be right back. Welcome back to Do You Even? Movie? So moving down to our IMDb synopsis, we have an eight year old boy tries to investigate the mysterious knocking sounds that are coming from inside the walls of his house, unveiling a dark secret that his sinister parents have kept hidden from him.
15:27 It's a pretty solid description. My synopsis, Oh boy, here we go. Bullied eight year old suspects his parents are harboring a dark secret when he keeps hearing knocking inside his bedroom walls at night. I'm gonna give that a wash. I think they're both pretty good. All right, I did it two weeks in a row. All right, wash is not a wind, Yeah, but fair enough. You both You both came in second place, so you're. So participation trophy awesome. Yeah, yeah one. Moving to our cast, we have Lizzi Kaplan who plays Carol in the film, and she gets her start in nineteen eighty nine Witheks and Geeks Ahi. That's where I remember first seeing her. Undeclared in two thousand and one, Orange County two thousand and two, Everybody's Doing It two thousand and two, Smallville in two thousand and two, The Pits, Mean Girls in two thousand and four, True Calling in two thousand and five, Love is the Drug Family, Guy crashing the class, Cloverfield in two thousand and eight, My Best Friend's Girl, True Blood, American Dad Party Down in two thousand and nine, Hot Tub Time Machine in twenty ten, One hundred and twenty seven Hours two thousand and ten, as well The Cleveland Show, High Road Children's Hospital, Batchel Threat, New Girl in twenty twenty twelve, newsreaders Masters of Sex Krawl showed the league the interview the night before Now You See Me Too, Simpson's Disaster Artist, Extinction, Castle Rock, Inside Job, Fatal Attraction series.
16:41 By the way, in twenty twenty three. I didn't even know that was that's such a thing existence. Yeah, Cobweb in twenty twenty three, of course, is her last credit. Right now. I do want to say that I revisited the Now You See Me films recently. Have you ever seen those? No, No, they're a lot of fun. I've heard they're funny. Yeah, she's really good in the second one. But I just those were a lot of fun revisiting those recently. And also, I just wo, you heroes so much fun to watch in most movies. I mean, it would be bad if he was bad to watch in most movie. He wasn't a big part of my favorite in the Venom sequel, harsh I'm just saying. Well, you heard it here first, folks, David hates what he harold, I do not hate what heroes. Well, I think we need to get the conversation back on rapart Place.
17:24 Anthony Starr plays Mark in the film. He gets his start in nineteen ninety five with Xena Warrior, Princess Street Legal in two thousand, Terror Peak two thousand and three, Hard Out Mercy Peak Without a Paddle in two thousand and four, Not only but Always in two thousand and four, Serial Killers two thousand and four, The World's Fastest Indian in two thousand and five, Outrageous Fortune Series in two thousand and five, naming number two Spies and Lies, Bliss in twenty ten, I Wish You Were Here twenty twelve, Tricky Business Banshee, American Gothic in twenty sixteen, American Sausage Standoff in twenty nineteen, Well that is a title, is quite a title. And then in twenty nineteen he lands a little series called The Boys. Ah Yes When It Was Very Good in twenty nineteen.
18:04 Anti Donna's Big Old House of Fun in twenty twenty, Guy Richie's The Covenant in twenty twenty three, cob Web in twenty twenty three, and also jen V in twenty twenty. Three, which is The Boy's spinoff spinoff y series. Yea, and I think He's also credited on the other one. They're doing now. Yeah, I don't remember what that one's called. I can't either. Wrapping us up for our cast. We also have Woody Norman, who plays Peter in the film. He could just start in twenty fifteen on a show called Silent Witness Peter and Wendy. In twenty fifteen him The White Princess The Current War. Remember how many trailers we saw that movie and then it never came out. Oh test movie. Well, he must have been like a zygoat in those guys. He's a little kid in twenty twenty. Well, I think the shot in twenty two two. But Yill Troy, Fall of the City in twenty eighteen, lemzirob Twenty nineteen, Catastrophe twenty nineteen, Bruno twenty nineteen, No, not that Bruno. The War of the World's in twenty nineteen, The Small Hand, Come On, Come On in twenty twenty one, cob Web in twenty twenty three, and also in twenty twenty three, The Last Voyage of the Meter He's the young kid on the boat.
18:58 Oh shit, was another underappreciated flick. Yeah, I would, I do need to revisit it. I remember the ending was the only thing I kind of had gripes with. Well, we all know how it's gonna end, but two weeks, but do we? So? Cobweb, as Enrique said, is currently available to stream on Hulu. You can also get a pretty cheap blue right. I think I got mine for thirteen Lucky thirteen Lucky thirteen, and it also comes to digital copy, so now I have it forever. Ah. So we already know your first time watching cob Web, because it was just now. I remember it like it was yesterday. I had seen the trailers with you and theaters of course. Yeah, and we I remember us being like that looks good. Oh, we wanted to catch it. Yeah, it ended up playing in our local area, if at all, very briefly. Yeah.
19:43 And October, believe it or not, is a very very busy time, especially for both of us at that period of time when you had the ghost tours starts going on, yep, and I have weekly spooky stuff going on. October is always tough. Yeah. Yeah, and I'm doing thirty one releases on Weekly Spooky in thirty one days. You're a master no something. But so unforthuably we missed it in theaters. I kind of had forgotten about it, and then I saw that Hulu got it and it popped up on my like a feed one day. It's been in my watch list for like since it got there originally.
20:24 Yeah, So one day I was I had I had some time, so I popped it on and I was at work for my processing shifts on a Saturday, and so I was watching like the first I think probably hour and I got to write about the hour mark and I had to leave and go home. I didn't watch the rest of it that day, So it was the next morning that I was like, well, I gotta do some laundry, so I'll pop this on and finish it. And then when that third act hit, I was just like, holy shit, this movie is awesome, Like it was already about like a three star when I was watching it. Well, I have to say, I do think you did this film a disservice watching it while somewhat distracted. Yeah, no, absolutely, because even as we were watching it, my home is in a lot of flux right now. My my partner, my girlfriend just moved in and we're still getting everything organized and not everything's done. So I couldn't pull down my giant crazy movie screen. We just watched it on my my only on my sixty five inch TV. I'm I'm such a bitch. But for we only we watched it on the TV set. Yeah, and even on the TV set, I was very shocked by how engrossing the atmosphere yeah was for this film. So I do think that you're lucky that you ended up seeing the final third act where things go crazy, yeah, because at least then you were a bit more engrossed.
21:40 Yeah, I will want you know, I should have been on a movie size screen made for movies. Yeah, I should have watched it on like a Nokia. But so I was blow away by the third act. I think I immediately texted you and I was just like, have you seen Cobweb yet? And I was like, I was like, why do I need to clean the corners in my room? So I was really happy when we decided to pick this for the show. When we decided, well I suggested it, and then we decided. Okay, it's democracy enough, are you ready to get into it? I thought we already were. All right, well we're breaking down the movie now. So we open with the perfect text, because if you're gonna have a Halloween movie, you know, why not have it take place near Halloween where it says one week before Halloween and we're off to the races with.
22:23 Oh yeah, oh yeah, and it's the movie is very fall. Yes, I will say, not a complaint, but just an observation. They did kind of do the I mean like they did the Halloween fall feel, but they didn't lean into it to the extent of a lot of other films. And I think that that was on purpose. I don't think it was because they didn't care to or couldn't. I think that they really wanted you to just kind of have this simplistic understanding of like, here's their home, and here's the dark corridors, and here's his bedroom, and here's what it's like at night, and then a little bit of here's his school, in a little bit of here's his neighborhood, and hears his backyard. But for the most part, the house is almost a character of its own.
23:05 Funny you mentioned that that might come back in the trivia. Yeah, well, I mean the house is it's not it's an old enough house to be noticeable. Yeah, but it's not decrepit, it's not falling apart, it's not you know, a traditional haunted house style, but they light the hell out of it to make it really truly creepy. Yes they do. So we meet Peter and we see bits and pieces of his life in the credits. We kind of get a little bit a taste of the school life, the home life, and not really much into what's wrong yet basically. And this kid is perfect casting. Yeah, he is such a morose little boy, which I found very impressive in the performance of such a young actor. And just because just the way he talks, the way he carries himself, the way his hair styled, everything about him is very dour and shy at the same time.
24:03 Yeah, it absolutely is. And I mean what I really like about Woody Norman in the role is that you immediately feel for this kid just by the way that he presents himself. Yeah. I know that you generally have trouble empathizing with children for some reason. Shut up and something bad. APIs a kid in the movie. You're like, serves, You're right, your little shit. At least, I'm not like Keith, who just laughed at Halloween ends when the kid just hit the ground. Well spoilers, No, I mean, well, you know, Keith, we love you, Keith, we love it here. You're a dark son of a bit. So we see we see Peter in his room. He hears a noise. He's laying in bed. He here's a noise, and so he runs to his wall and turns the light on, and the noise stops and the room illuminates, and we see that the house itself isn't like you said it's it's not not the king. But there's a lot of decay around the house. There's a pumpkin patch in the backyard that's got some rotting pumpkins in it.
24:50 There's a lot of leaves around the property. It's it has a fall look to it for one. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. So the house itself has a cane look to it. And he goes to his wall. He puts his ear to the wa and he sees if he can hear anything, and he also knocks at the wall, and something knocks back at him. Which is the thing you're really hoping doesn't happen late at night when you knock on a wall. Yeah, you're hoping not to hear a knock knock knock back. Knock back. Though. So he goes to his parents room. He runs in and he's scared, and his mom goes to the wall and she knocks at the wall but nothing comes back. Well, I guess girls can't do it. She also tells him it's an old house and it's bound to have its quirks. This old house with Bob, y Las House with Bob.
25:31 So we see Peter then go to school. He's getting on the bus and he is tripped by a bully named Brian, who tells him he'll get more at Recess dam. So Peter's classroom is chaotic. There's kids running around screaming. The principal comes in and introduces a new teacher who is mistivine, and as the principal walks out, I love that he says good luck. Yeah, yeah, which which honestly felt a little out of place, because really the only strife in that classroom was the kid bullying, yeah, our main character. Otherwise the kids were not particularly unruly or whatever. So I kind of took it that a little bit as maybe that I don't know, like more of like a playful jar, like a jab.
26:12 I mean good luck because they're just a bunch of little kids. Because honestly, I mean, we don't get much time with the principle obviously in the film, but he does seem to be genuinely a good dude, even though he calls her out at one point, but we'll get it there. Well, he's trying to take care of business. So Miss Divine comes in and we also see that the kid that was taunting Peter Brian is in his classroom and we hear the bell sound and he's like, Recess is coming. Oh yeah, So Miss Devine's in the classroom. She turns around and realizes that Peter is still in the classroom with her, and she's like, you know, oh, you don't like Recess and he's like, not really. Yeah, he uh, he's what we would to quote what hot American summer, an indoor indoor kid. Yes. So we also see that Peter is startled by a spider that's crawling across his desk, and Miss Divine sees this and she shows him a really cute scene how to trap the spider and go.
27:00 She shows him a scene, shows a a scene. She just like pulls out her iPad and she's like. See this and she shows him and it's a cute. Is a very cute scene. No, because she doesn't just capture the spider to spare him the fear. Yeah, she catches the spider under her glass and shows him how to do the paper trick and then has him let it go on the window, which I thought was actually a really endearing moment, suggesting that she has a lot of empathy with children. Absolutely, and I really just like her character. As we get more in the movie, she's awesome. Why would anyone like that character? Crazy? Right? So they get the spider, they throw it safely out the window, and then that night at home, Peter tells his family that he wants to trick or treat and asks why can't he, and his mom says, you know, well, we're not like the other parents, and his dad even starts speaking up that there was an old house at the air. There is an old house at the end of the street. A couple of years ago a little girl went missing and she was never found and it happened on trigger treating, and they don't want the same thing to happen to him. Mmm.
27:56 See, I would have liked it more if the mother had been like, do you want to SSP? And he'd be like, no, say it, I don't want to SSP, no say it. I don't want to suck Satan's packer. Oh my god, I knew that was it. Why do you know, SSP. Me just had a feeling that worries me that you knew that. So he goes to school again that night, and he goes to school, goes to sleep again that night. Of course, he goes to school again that night, and. We see that the wall is starting to pull basically a nightmare and elm Street. Yeah, a kind of a head shape is pressing through the wallpaper. Yeah, and it definitely looks like the human sized head actually looks kind of like a child does.
28:42 And Peter is called to again by the voice, this time actually saying his name. So Peter calls to his dad. The voice says, no, don't tell him, but it's too late. The dad comes in and tells him. He's like, you know what's going on. He's like, I heard the voice again, and he's like, Peter like he's he's aggravated. So he's not thrilled hearing this, but he tells him that, you know, all right, we'll take a look at this then, because Peter swears that he heard the voice, so his dad puts his ear to the wall, and of course he hears nothing, so he says, well, it must be rats. Must be rats, And what do you do about rats? Dave, you get rat poison? So you go see that. Peter and his dad are in the shed the next morning and he's showing him the rat poison as he hasn't grabbed the bag. They comment on the fact that it also smells like cinnamon.
29:24 Yeah, well because the boy, of course he's gonna smell it and stuff. He's never been around rat poison. Yeah, So they start putting it against the walls, and Peter is sad about killing the rats, but his dad explains, you know that sometimes you have to do something bad to have something good happen. And all I could think was, Yeah, if you hate hearing knocking on the walls, why not go for the smell of decaying flesh in the walls rat poison. You're gonna end up with dead rats in your wall? Do you even move? He will be right back. Welcome back to do you even movie?
30:08 Have you ever told the gopher story? I'm in my life on the show. I don't know when I very quick story when I worked at my last stage oh, I can say stuff now, Yes, is that dumb shit retired? My former boss he retire, Yeah, hopefully he found a good iceberg to float off into the ocean on the son of a bitch. So I had a job at a cable access station for a few years. My boss was a really just a what's the word solid gold asshole. He was use real prick. And one time we had a gopher problem at the station and we have this big, single floor building with a stone foundation, and we were having gopher issues. Well, his cheap and stupid ass decides, because he was the executive director, he decides, We're not going to hire somebody to come and catch it. We're not going to hire somebody to professionally remove it, kill it, whatever. No, what we're gonna do is we're gonna take the production truck. Now, when you have a television production truck, the way it works is very simple. You have a truck, but then in the back you have a studio where the switchers and the soundboards are, and you need power to run it.
31:26 So you have a separate generator that runs the truck. And because you know you're gonna have people with cameras around the truck. You don't want that generator spewing carbon monoxide into everybody's lungs. Yeah, so you have a little there's a little stretchy tube that lets you run it about let's say, twenty feet from the truck so it can just ditch it out. Yeah. So dumbass takes the tube and sticks it into the hole that he's figured out where the gopher goes, and just flips the generator on and leaves it on for like five hours, flooding a hole with poisonous, toxic carbon monoxide, which would most certainly kill a Yeah, would kill kill anybody. Yeah, it would kill anything down there, as long as it needs oxygen to live. David.
32:12 Hopefully Freddy wasn't down there, Oh poor Freddy. But anyway, so he does this on a Friday or no, yeah, on a Friday, Thursday. No, it was on a Thursday Thursday. And then I come into work on Saturdays because I work full day Saturday, and it is fucking the Amityville horror. Yeah, the entire building is just swarmed with flies because there is a big, bloated, rotting, dead gopher underneath the building. Yeah, it was awful. It smelled the flies were I'm not kidding, there were so many flies. So Monday he has to call an exterminator and have them crawl under there and get the body out. And all I could think was, you know, you could have started there.
32:58 Yeah, how'd you guys get the flies out. By removing the body. The flies have no reason to stick around around yet, and they don't live very long anyway, And we put up some of those sticky fly trapstick But it was it was ainus. Man. That sounds so gross, it was. It was so gross. And I should have known from that moment on, like this motherfucker is gonna suck yeah to work. For that probably should have been aside. You know, hindsight is twenty twenty, especially when you're looking at an ass like him. That is true. I don't even know if that was a funny joke, but fuck you anyway. So the next morning, mister Vine comes over and she's showing Peter's mom a drawing that he had that he had made in class, and we see that it is a sketching of Peter at a window. It's a drawing of Peter at the window saying help me, and that there's blackness all around the house.
33:43 It's a very creepy picture. It's just a little boy, solid blackness with one little bubble of white, so that help me can be written in there. But it does. We don't know if he's calling it because that's basically what he's going to defend, because his mom states, oh, it's just an overactive imagination. So Miss Devine leaves. His mother immediately goes to his room, asking him about the drawing, and when she turns under his breath, he says, you know, I was the one saying it. She is, And his mom turns back and she's like, what did you say, And he's like nothing, and she's like, uh, you have an overactive imagination. It might get you into trouble someday. It might. It might, Yeah, you might end up in show business. Well I actually have a I have a drop for that.
34:27 What and quit show business. So that night, the voice calls to Peter once again, telling him not to be afraid. It just wants to talk. Yeah, I mean that's that's that's what my Ouiji board always tells me. So Peter denies her at first, stating that, you know, he doesn't want to talk, and that she's like Okay, well, I thought you just wanted a friend. But if you don't want a friend, I'll just go away. And that's what Peter's like, No, no, no, like, let's talk. So the next morning, in Miss Divine's class, Peter paints a pumpkin that. They have in the class. Peter paints a pumpkin. There we go, good job, and he names it yeah yeah, and she goes it looks like a hector And I'm like, that lady and that boy are racist. Mister Vine compliments him on the name. We also see that Brian is eyeing Peter in class, and later at recess we see that Brian pushes Peter because Peter's hanging out with his pumpkin. At recess, I did notice that this team.
35:18 He pulls a Tommy Doyle. Yes, and he pushes him on the pumpkin and then stops on the pumpkin. He pulls a Tommy Doyle and then he oh no, and then oh god, I can't even get it. Oh no, no, it's not even that funny. Yeah, forget it. No, no, I now I can't even think of his name. I was gonna the guy of the musician. The world is a van pulls Tommy Doyle and then he pulls a Billy Gordon vice Magic, you you destroyed the joke, David. You took the joke out behind a biker bar, shot it in both made it admit it was a cop, and then killed it. Toby Doyo, that a Billy Corgan.
36:04 I like that. You're welcome. That's pretty good. So that night, the voice calls to Peter, checking in on him and tells him that tomorrow he needs to stand up for himself. And the next day we're back in class and Brian along with his mother show up as Brian's holding a pumpkin that she presents to Peter as Brian apologizes, and mister Vine's like, wasn't that nice of Brian? Class and Brian even like haphazardly sharp eyed a new face on it. But boy, is Brian not into this apology? No, but no, Peter's not into the apology. Well wait, Peter is the one getting the pumpkin. Brian's the bully. Brian is also not into the he's the one giving the apology. Yeah, yeah, yeah, no he is. He is not all about this. He is clearly being coerced. He is, but maybe maybe he'll catch a lucky break.
36:48 So we hear the voice also is Peter's still in class, He's remembering what the voice said to him, continuing saying that she wanted him to not be afraid anymore, and tell him that you're not afraid anymore by making him a raid of. You, which I mean as a lifestyle guide in life coach, that's solid advice. Pretty good advice. So we watch Peter stock Brian after class through some very empty hallways behind you. Yeah, I don't know where all the other students are, but why not? And he follows Brian over we and the camera holds in place. We watch him go around a corner and then we hear a Brian go whoa Peter, And then we hear a thud. We hear Brian screaming for help, and we cut back to Peter, who is like horrified looking down of Brian because he's pushed him down a flight of steps and his leg is fucking broken.
37:31 It is snapped at an unnatural angle. Yeah, made me very uncomfortable. So naturally, Peter's parents get called to the school and Peter is expelled for this, and that night Peter is scolded by his father for getting violent to solve a problem, because he says, that's not how our family solved problems. His mom then even tells his father about the picture, and that's when his father questions, why would he draw something like that. Peter stays silent and his dad yells at him again, and that's when you know, he says, I did I really did hear her say help me? And his dad has had enough At this point he shouts at him that he's grounded. But he's not just grounded, Enrique. He's going to go in the basement. Well, he goes to go in his room. He's like, no, no, no, you're grounded. So I assume in this household, grounded means you go in the basement. But the basement is bizarre because there is a small door, not a tiny door, but a smaller than average door hidden perfectly behind their refrigerator.
38:23 So they moved the fridge, unlock the padlock on the door to the basement, and put the boy down there. Among just random things. Is he changed or does he find the chain? I think he ends up chained. At one point he picks up a palette, which is what he's chained to. Yeah, I'm pretty certain, so, but uh no, and it's it's it is eerie. It's very eerie. And but just the fact that he pulled he pulled a reverse, a reverse parent trap, a reverse house arrests. Yes, you know, we were. Talking about that. By the way, we cover the movie house arrest where a bunch of kids locked their parents in a basement.
39:04 Watched it. We didn't coover yet. Oh oh, we haven't covered the one. I thought we did talk about them. We just watched it. Does I want to show it to you? Oh well, then I hate you. Well, we watched this movie and we were like, man, what would happen if it was reversed? Oh yeah, then parents would lock their kids into the Basement's not as okay, that's not as okay. So the mother's pleading with him, but the father's adamant, and Miss Divine is also reprimanded by the principal the next day for going to visit Peter's house. She states that she want to make sure he was okay, and the Principle's like, well, you know, did he did he showup with bruises? Is he peeing his pants? Is he like talking overtly about sexual stuff? That he shouldn't be knowing about. If he's not, there's literally nothing we can do. Yeah, then we and we don't care. Yeah. Basically, well he. Really is like, we have to mind her own business or we're overstepping.
39:45 Yes, So he tells her that if there are no signs of abuse, they can't do anything, and that the child missing that you know, the neighborhood, would probably make any parent over protective, and that's what he thinks is going on. So Peter in the basement discovers a great that goes deep down into the ground that he pulls away from the and that's when we also see that Peter's mother is watching the washer when the doorbell rings and Miss Devine has returned to the house. And I want to mention I had a friggin Mandela effect that we did an episode about house around so you did. I literally checked the podcast history because I was like, did I swore we covered it? No, we just watched it. Well, it was good. It may become an episode, who knows. I mean, who can say it's a nineties so in times like this, but no. So so now we have this little boy down in the basement, we have this washing machine pounding and pounding and pounding, and as she enters the home, things are pretty tense.
40:37 Yeah, because initially when she comes to the door, it's just Carol the mom. And then Mark comes to the door and he's like, oh no, no, come on in, as he holds a hammer mind you, Yeah, of course, and he pulls a chair out in the kitchen for her to sit down. And that's when she notices that he's bleeding like a lot. Yeah. Yeah, he's bleeding like there's blood running down almost his whole arm. Yeah. And I want to mention that the most devious thing that should tell you something is wrong in his family. Yeah, all brunettes, that's not okay. That's not okay. I say that as a brunette. So he pulls the cheer out for her. She's like, you know, you have an asscune you're on there. He's like, oh no, yeah, I'm just doing some remodeling. It's fine though, So he goes to work bandaging it. And that's when Miss Divine asked about, you know, since what are you guys going to do with Peter now since he's been expelled?
41:23 You know, what schooling is going to go to and they're like, oh, we're going to homeschool him. Well, I mean, what else can you do? And she's like, you know, I don't know if that's the best idea. And that's when Carol Kay is kind of like, you know, is there a reason you have an obsession with my son? Like, you know why you're coming here? You brought his latest math test. I don't think this is normal practice for teachers to visit a home this much. Yeah, no, and it is questionable. Yeah. And meanwhile, while this is happening, Peter realizes that the Miss Divine is over and we see him go up the steps and he starts knocking on the door on the behind the door, But of course the washer's going and it's banging, so his banging is also getting absolved by that noise. His help me is also getting absolved by that noise. But she he's sitting at the table and she still feels uneasy and like, is hearing something absorbed? Absorbed?
42:05 Absorbed? Yeah? No, But and it's a really cool sequence because he's kicking and kicking, and then it cuts to the washing machine banging and banging, yeah, And then it cuts to them talking and you realize that you can't tell the difference between the two. Yeah, it's really smart storytelling. So she goes to leave, and I did want to mention one thing that I forgot about is she did write her phone number on top of this math test. Yeah, she's basically slipping him a note, yeah, to call for help that he needs it needed. Yeah. So the washer stops being around as she gets up to leave, and just for a split second she can hear Peter's banging on the wall and even the dad stops and he's like and she's like, you know what, what is that? And he's like, oh, it's the washing machine, as the washing machine starts up again. Yeah, and and and it's it really is a solid scene.
42:46 It's so suspenseful. It's intense, and you're waiting for shit to hit the fan. Yeah, And I love how they kept making me think it was time for the shit to hit the fan, and then it doesn't for just a little while longer. So out in her car, mister Vine finds that she's forgotten her car keys as she's digging through a purse, and that's when Mark brings him to her car, still holding the hammer too. Well, he did say the reason he was bleeding was because he was doing home improvements, So that isn't quite as shocking that he would have a hammer. And it's not I mean, like, and I could tell you I'm doing some homeprove and stuff, you end up with cuts all over yourself. Oh yeah, that was a pretty deep cut. But I mean to bring the hammer out to her car with her keys.
43:28 Well, but think about it if you weren't afraid of this Brunette family. Fair which you should be afraid of a Brunette family, But think about it this way. M what happened from from a perspective of if everything was normal. He has his hammer, He's about to go back to whatever, and they say, oh, shoot her keys, grabs it, head straight to her. You wouldn't grab the keys and be like, all right, I'm gonna I'm set the hammer down, i gonna fix my hair a little, but I'm gonna take a shit and then I'll be like, hey, your keys. I would be I would just be more worried about looking like I was about to ambush somebody who I was bringing their keys to. Well, you know, Dave, most people don't expect to be murdered wherever they go. But then again, most people don't talk shit like you do, so my mind immediately goes there.
44:09 Though. It's like if I'm going out to give my friends their keys and I have a hammer my hand, I'm like, Oh, they're gonna think I'm gonna kill them. Like that's where my mind immediate. That's because you kind of want to, you know. It's like that old saying that like if you're afraid to stand at the edge of a ledge, it's because party you wants to jump, not because you're afraid you'll fall. Do have it? What was the movie recently where they pulled a Halloween two with the hammer in the head? Oh, I'm trying to remember. We talked to it on the show. I can't remember what the hell was, but yeah, I can't remember. But uh, I ruined it. I did ruin it, damn it. But I do love that hammer shot in Halloween too, though. I mean, I'm glad it's hammertime, ba hamber time. Do you even? Movie will be right back, welcome back to do you even?
44:55 Movie? So out in her car, she gets her keys and she drives off, and Mark just stands in the road looking at her. She drives away that night, his mother comes down to the basement with pumpkin cupcakes and a candle in them. And and they're all smiles except one is a frown. Yes, I love that just one is a crown, a frown. So she's telling him that he can come out now, even stating that she's made pumpkins for her pumpkin. Aw. So we see Peter getting a bath as his mom is scrubbing him. His dad is also in the bathroom and he's like, you know, have you had time to think about this? And Peter goes to say that he has grown up and he's gonna stop having the nightmares, and they tell him that he's also gonna be homeschooled.
45:37 Now he's gonna learn the three rs, Reading, writing, and arithmetic. I love that he says the old reading, writing, and arithmetic. And then his wife is just like, oh my god, I'm sorry, I'm terrible. I'm terrible, and I was just like creepily wholesome all of a sudden, but okay. So we see Peter put to bed by his parents, and I want to mention at this point we've already talked about the lighting in the film. Anytime Peter is in his bedroom late at night. Yeah, there is nothing but darkness around his entire bedroom except for like a spotlight almost on the bed. Well and even when the door is open so he can see into the hallway. Yeah, the hallway has light with a little kind of dome of light going across the wall, and then pitch black and then another light with a little tiny dome of light. All of the light is extremely focused, with lots and lots and lots of shadow. Yeah, and it really pulls you in.
46:29 The shadow works very well in this film especially. Yeah, I would have to agree. So that is when he also decides to talk to the person in the wall again and he starts knocking and stating, you know, please talk to me. And that's when she's like, you know, I was worried about you, and he tells it that they locked in the basement. She's like, I was afraid they were gonna do that. Your parents are dangerous and they're not what they seem. And Peter asks if he can see her. He wants to know, like if he can see her, and she says, no, it would be bad. You would scream, you wake your parents, and it would be bad for both of us, and he says no, I won't, and she goes, Okay, Well, then come to the wall and peel back this corner of wallpaper, and that's when we see that there is a hole behind the wallpaper. A hole about the size of like a little bigger than a baseball. Yeah. Yeah.
47:10 And he goes to look into the hole, doesn't see anything at first, and then suddenly an eye shoots in the frame. And it is That's the one thing I really liked. It's brief. It's really brief, and I from what I saw, from what I saw eyes, it didn't seem like an unusual eye. No, it's I mean it was dark. Everything looks kind of gray in that lighting. Yeah. But just the fact that they built it up and built it up, and then just that moment of seeing the eye. I think the reason that that works so well is because you're just hoping that there isn't actually a person in there. Yeah, So seeing the eye just confirms your ultimate fulti fear because you have to think about the layers. Okay, you're in a house, a big, old, creepy house. You're always scared when you're alone at night. Your parents are overbearing and they punish you in ways that are really inappropriate and borderline not even borderline abusive, the abusive to put it in a basement. Yeah, yeah it is, so you have that. But now it's like, so if someone is living in the walls, then the next question becomes, how did they get into the walls? Why are they trapped?
48:25 And then could I end up in the walls? Yes, And all of those thoughts are playing at the same time in a child's mind where he does have a very strong, a very strong imagination because his nightmares are crazy, vivid and really scary. So I love that it plays on all those levels though, because like the entire time, he's hoping it's a nightmare, or he's mistaken, or he's confused, or you know, somebody left a walkie talkie in his wall, but no, we have confirmed there's a face looking back at you from inside the wall. And that ain't great. It is not great because then he goes to ask who are you, and that's when she tells him that she is his sister and she's been locked behind the behind the wall for some time now, hidden behind a door that is behind a clock in another room of the house. So now that's two hidden terances or exits, whatever you want to call them.
49:19 Yes, and it's a beautiful big grandfather clock. Yeah that just tick which also, I don't know if you thought of this, go ahead, so think about the way things are being depicted. He's stuck behind a door, yeah, but he has room to stand and stuff. So of course he would kick, right, he would kick and punch at the door. So we have a washing machine covering that sound. If you're trapped behind a door and you don't have room to stand up, what can you do to try to get out, David? Kick or scratch or scratch? Yeah? And what could cover a scratch kick? Just the thought of it just came to me as we were talking about it. But that's why this movie works on a lot of levels. It keeps it really simple the whole way through in a very effective way. This is one of my one of my the most This is the most impressed I've been by a modern Halloween time movie.
50:21 We're not going to count the Halloween sequels, but since maybe hell Fest or uh well, if we're talking a theatrical movie, because it was technically theatrical movie, or definitely what was that one that was on shutter Trick, Haunt, Thank You was Haunt, Haunt was the was probably the king of Halloween time new releases. So I think this one really does deserve a place. I mean, we'll talk about that more when we're done talking about the film, but it really deserves a place in your Halloween viewing at least one one year. Absolutely for sure. So she tells him that his parents are evil and to be careful because his time is coming soon, because she believes that the are going to kill her and put him in the wall next.
51:02 And why wouldn't he believe the girl trapped in the wall. Yeah, so his parents already trap in places sometimes, Yeah, they do. Later that night, Peter wakes up to his calling to his mom as his door slowly creaks open, revealing that no one's behind it. But we also see a lit hallway to the other side of his parents' room. Yes, and this is where the playing with light really kicks into high gear. So he gets out of his bed and he walks towards the doorway, and then suddenly a figure walks past. It looks just like his mom, and then all of a sudden, the hallway goes completely dark. Yes, so Peter runs back to his bed, and that's when he hears his dad calling to him, and that's when the camera reveals that his dad is standing in the corner, completely in the darkness, with just his lower half visible, and then his face slowly coming out.
51:50 Well, and this was the sounds to the weird. Yeah, we heard the weird clicking, fast clicking, and as we see more of his face revealed, we realize that's the sound of his eyes opening and closing really fast. Yeah. I would be shocked if these nightmare scenes were not based on real nightmares, because they don't make sense to a normal human thought process. Yeah, but they make sense in the realm of nightmares, because in nightmares, kid, Yeah, Well, and in the realm of nightmares, things that don't really make sense creep you out. Yeah, I think I told you. I once had a nightmare that I was just hearing bugs, like like the sound of like really loud crickets outside of my door. Yeah, And I went over to the door and shut the light off, and they stopped, and then I turned the light back on and they didn't start again. And then I turned around and like saw something and I woke up scared and I was and I put that in a short film because I was like, I would never think of that, yeah, but my subconscious decided to. So I really think that the way they depict the nightmares is just really really great.
52:57 No, it absolutely is. So his dad is a clicking, his eyes are shutting and closing, and then that's when he goes, look what you did to your mother? As his mother standing now at the end of Peter's bed or no in the hall, yes, yes, and the far becomes running at him. Well, and as she's running, the lights shut off. Yes, and it's like she's not there anymore because she was almost to the threshold. And then and. Then she kicks right back up with the music and comes right in charges him, grabs him, and then it flips like this shot is so cool. She throws him back on the bed and then we see the camera turnover. It flips back, and that's when he wakes up at it's morning now. Yeah. Yeah, the camera they use a lot of disorienting camera moves. Yeah, so as it as the camera basically twists, it's now mourning and the mother isn't jumping on the bed attacking him.
53:40 He's jumping into her arms, scared. Because she's she's saving him from a nightmare. She's comforting him from a nightmare. So she tells me very safe. Now, Yeah, and he believes that about as much as I believe anything I hear from a politician. So later that night, the voice tells Peter that his parents hate her, and she clawed her way to get to him through the walls from the or from the pit, all the way up to his wall, and that she's afraid they're going to put him in the wall. Next, Peter states his parents wouldn't do that or kill anyone, and she states that they already have, and that she's going to show him by him checking the garden. She'll tell him exactly where to dig. So he heads out into the backyard. Yeah, which is where all those pumpkins are, which are just there. Not all of them are rotting, all they're growing. And he starts digging, and not only does he find something very unsettling, Yeah, but it's not even that deep in the soil, it is not.
54:32 He finds a whole human skull, just right in the in the midst of it all. And of course, right as he uncovers the skull, his mother coming out from behind the clock. Yes, goes into his room with the water. Pitcher goes into his room, sees he's not in there, goes to the window, and she's like Peter as he's just uncovered the skull. So we don't know if she's seen it. We don't know what's going on. Because there's a chance she didn't notice because number one, she's not looking for a skull, and number two, she is kind of far away, so she probably he only noticed him, or the jig is up. Or she knew where he was spot wise. So she goes running down through the house, comes outside, and that's when Peter quickly covers up the skull and he's holding a pumpkin, and he goes, well, since we're not going out for trigger treating and you're not gonna let me go out, I thought we could carb.
55:15 A pumpkin wholesome content until we cut. To Peter's mom just hacking away at multiple pumpkins in the kitchen sink with a butcher knife. Yeah, she is sawing away, basically just stabbing the pumpkin over and over again. So while the voice tells Peter his parents killed the girl who went missing, and she doesn't want that to happen to him. Peter tells the voice that he's going to get her out, and that's when he finds his math test. He calls Miss Devine's number on it, and he does this by going to his parents' room and he keeps looking in the hall as he's calling her. She answers the phone and he's like, I need you to come get me, like I need help. Yeah yeah, And as he's doing that, one of the best scares, Yeah, we reveal he hears something. So he looks to the doorway. Nobody's there. His mother's directly behind him in the corner and she's standing perfectly still. Yeah, so who knows how long she'd been there or whatever.
56:09 But she catches him in the act and I was getting sweaty palms. Because see, of course, he hangs up the phone in fear, and that's when Miss Devine starts calling the house back. She answers the phone and she's like, oh, Peter, we know he was missing you, and I said, you know, you should go ahead and call her. So he called you and I guess he's just too shy. We'll try this again. Happy Halloween. By what a snitch? Why would you call back when he says I need help. Yeah, yeah, you'd be like, oh, I guess I should tell his parents that he's snitching on them. So that's when Carol tells Peter that he's been bad, and she scolds him for calling a stranger and not going into the comfort of his own parents and that he is to go to his room and just wait until his father gets home. So they go into his room together, and that's when she also sees that the wallpaper has been pulled away and the hole is there.
56:52 And before we move on, it's worth mentioning too. When she says wait till your father gets home, she has fear in her voice. Yeah, it is not a standard like, well, we'll see what your father says. She's because the class starts going on wait to your father, Yeah, because it's time soon for daddy to come home. She's terrified of what's going to happen. So panicking, she leaves the room and just wanders the hall and she's asking, you know, what did she tell you? So she's aware that somebody's in the wall. Yes, yes, definitely freaking out. The clock is sounding and she's again she's like, you know, just to just wait to your father, agains, and she kind of keeps repeating that, and she's frantic as she shuts her own bedroom door, sealing herself in. Yes. No, And this is where you start to realize, holy shit, Okay, the fan is out. Yeah, now we just wait for someone to start throwing feces.
57:36 Now we are about to get to a very critical scene of this film that is going to be loaded with the best spoiler possible of this entire movie. So if you have not seen this movie and you're still listening to the show right now, I beg of you please pause the podcast and watch the movie, because this is such a great. Third act, David. They've been warned, they've been warned, so to listen. Here we go. So later, Peter told by the voice that his parents know now and that they're going to kill her, or going to kill both of them, and he has to do something. So Peter wanders downstairs to find his parents talking. And when I say he wanders downstairs, he is on the stairwell and the shot is the two giant shadows of his parents, and he's between them with.
58:16 A big orange light, a very warm light casting their shadows over the staircase as he sits between the shadows looking on. It's insanely stylized and very very awesome to look at. And it's such a great way because because it's shadows, they are even more so towering over him. Their shadows are almost to the ceiling. Yeah, as he's sitting there a small boy wondering what his fate will be. And even when they go to look at the parents, like the mom is cowering in front of Mark a little bit, and Mark's just like kind of like shighing it off. He's like, well, you know, you know what we have to do now, that's what Peter catches. And then suddenly his parents both turn their attention to him on the stairs as he runs back up the stairs.
58:57 And I want to mention, from the beginning of the film, the parents very often have no light on their faces. They're very little like they're often their faces are in shadows, which makes you distrust them. Yeah, And I think that's a really awesome choice, especially because I think that the genre of like you can't trust your own parents is such a underutilized and very scary genre, even in movies that are kind of goofy or wacky like Invaders from Mars by Toby Hooper, which is a good movie but it's wacky at times. But the idea you can't trust your own parents when you're a little kid, that no one will listen to, that you're not strong enough to defend yourself. But also another movie that's kind of wacky, but I find truly scary as Parents that where your parents are cannibals. I love that movie and when I was a teenager watching it, it's scared the hell out of me.
59:47 One of my favorites that I just feel like does not get enough love. Have you ever seen Domestic Disturbance with the John Travolta, Oh yeah, but and Vince Vaughn. That was the first time I ever saw Vince Vaughd. So then watching him go to comedy roles after that, it took me a bit because Disturbance was like my first introduction to him. Well, Vaughn was like a very serious New York based actor first, and then he kind of like John c Riley. John c Riley was a very serious studying actor, and then people realized he was funny and it just you know, went crazy from there. Yeah, but no Domestic disturbance is so good. That's a good film. Getting back to Cobweb. So he runs into his room and that's when his dad comes in and he's like, you know, hey, I know you're awake, So go ahead and get a good night's sleep, because tomorrow I need your help in the in the garden. We have a little problem we need to take care of.
1:00:28 And of course, I mean, why wouldn't the kid get a good night's sleep and ready to go help his dad with some wholesome work in the gardens. So the next morning, ladies and gentlemen, it's Halloween. Yay, Oh, hold on, there we go. Kids. The kids these days, they love the Halloween. Do You Even? Movie? Will be right back, welcome back to Do You Even? Movie? So Peter joins his father in the backyard, where we see a hole is dug in front of Peter, and Mark states that there is black rot taking over the garden and that they have to bury the pumpkins, the bad pumpkins, and hope that the next crop is better.
1:01:18 And my first thought was just a kid going like Dad, this isn't a metaphorus, no, son, not at all. So he tells him to pick up the shovel and dig as Peter goes to do so. And then on the street out front of Peter's house, we see a van driving up slowly as we see three guys in mask as one of them says, Brian, is this the place? And we see that this is Brian, his cousin and his friends and something is being planned for later tonight. And his friends are definitely from a range of fifteen to eighteen years old. They're big kids. Yeah, So Brian confirms that it is, and then that night Peter sits at his family as they have a nice dinner. But Peter's a nice dinner. Peter's not really touching his food. Well he's not a big eater anyway, he's so small. Yeah.
1:02:00 Yeah, So his mom is angered by the doorbell, which is kind of a funny scene because the doorbell goes off and she just gets up in a huff. You hear her open the door and think the guys go trick or treat, go away, and she just. Comes back, can't have any time with my family. And of course Mark's like portlight's off and she's. Like, yes, well, the jack of lantern that was lit on the patio might have made people think. Maybe though, that's supposed to keep the goons away. But whatever, I thought, you stop gooning. Always stop gooning. So she sits. Back down to finish dinner, Mark commenting on the soup tasting different but good, and she's like, oh, I don't think I did anything different. So she takes another bite, and she does notice something, taking a few more bites and even noticing that there's a smell to it.
1:02:42 The funniest part to me about that moment, though, is how simply and legitimately domestic the conversation is, because he's not like, you know, as creepy and weird and out there as they've been. Yeah, he's not like, what's wrong with the soup. He's just like, it tastes different. Yeah, it's still good. Just did you do anything different? It just kind of tastes different. And she and and so now as she's trying to figure it out, she starts shoveling it in tasting it and shoveling it in tasting it, and he's doing the same, and he's doing the same. And then at that moment, as the father is smelling it, cinnamon, cinnamon, and then as soon as he has the thought of cinnamon.
1:03:23 He hears the door of the shed in the backyard blacking and whacking, which is where So now he is immediately looking to the boy like, did you do something bad? Did you do something bad? What did you do to the soup? And that's when he begins to succumb to rat poison once again. We have an awesome camera shot where he gets these gut pains and then the camera just flips again. Yeah, And as he's writhing in pain, he's begging his wife, calling on or calling calling on the one right now, he starts puking up this black, viscous gunk. And she goes to the phone to find it cut, So Peter, not only. As it's the moment where she pulls the phone off and you see that the phone's cut, it becomes entirely premeditated, which is so oh my god, it's so heinous. So as she realizes that her son has killed her and her husband, she runs and grabs a butcher knife and starts chasing him as he runs up the stairs. She goes after him, but then the poison catches up to her.
1:04:27 She pukes her guts out too, and then he kind of pushes her away from him. As she's grabbing at him. She falls down, lands right on the knife, and well, he might be dead. He's got to get the keys now though, for the clocks. Yeah, because apparently there's a full blown plan. Apparently. He goes back down the steps, approaching her body, and suddenly she comes back to life for one more phrase as shews a little bit more blood and says, don't let. Her out, which is so excellent and so telling because that was the moment where I watching it the first time was like, ah, there's a lot more going on, because if there, if the parents are strictly malicious, then her last gasp of air would be anger or to try and grab him again. Yeah, but no, with her last breath, all she does is utter a warning to her son. Yeah. That tells you that something bigger than just mistreating a kid is going on, something a lot worse.
1:05:28 I wonder if we'll find out right now. As he goes to the room with the clock, as the voice asked, did you do it? Are they gone? He tells them that he thinks so, and that he's going to unlock the door, but she tells him to be careful because the clock is heavy in front of the door, and we see that it is because he pulls the clock and just smashes it to the floor. Just shatters onto the ground, revealing a little door. Yeah, like maybe two feet tall something like that. With a giant fucking lock, a lock at. Least half the size of the door. Of the height of the door. Yeah, it is a big pad of steel the door to the frame, which tells me you should absolutely unlock it. It's a great idea. And we should also point out too that the key that is used to unlock this is the classic haunted house key, just sliding right into the lock with its crook and everything.
1:06:14 Oh yeah, with the with the big teeth. Yeah, everything the old school style lock. So Peter approaches the door and she tells him to be careful. He unlocks the door as a bang rattles on the other side. He goes back to the room. The door swings open slowly with some blackness, nothing there, And then suddenly we hear an evil laugh echo that is nothing like anything of the voice we've heard so far. Now, all of a sudden, the voice is very deep. It's a witch and guttle. Yeah, yeah, like like almost like, yeah, like a stereotypical kind of witch voice, maybe not as high pitch, but it definitely does not sound like a little girl anymore. So he runs to his bedroom, locking the door behind him, and that's when we started to see a bunch of strands of hair coming out of the out of the hole as the monster is now revealed, asking him what was it like watching them die? Was it just like the little girl I killed?
1:07:03 Now we don't reveal is not quite the perfect word, yeah, because we only see glimpse peks. Yeah, but the monster is freed entirely, and we know now that we are about to find out what is really living in the walls of this house. But suddenly, downstairs, the doorbell sounds as we see Brian along with his cousin and friends now all wearing masks and calling to them in the streets, saying they just wanted to stop by for Halloween, and outside of the house, the door just swings open slowly as they're like, what the fuck? I love it Like, is this a trap? Yeah? No, shit, no, they just really want you to come in and have a couple of fluffer Nutter sandwiches.
1:07:44 So the gang of bullies enter the house with Brian behind them on crutches, and they called a Peter as he's hiding under his bed upstairs, and we see one of the gang enter his room. Others begin wondering the house, smashing up things, and then one goes to the kitchen, discovering the remnants of blood. But nobody's not a single one. And something that's become established very early on is whatever it is living in the walls has a penchant for grabbing and pulling people. Yeah, out of sight, out of mind, and then probably to their deaths. Yeah. So one goes to work smashing the piano and Brian slips on blood, landing onto the floor in his crutches, go offrom under him, and that's when Peter is found by one of the bullies in his room. As Brian realizes he's in blood, though, a bully sees some hair slip under the piano, pulled on the piano, and just a huge puddle of blood shoots out.
1:08:33 Yeah no, and that's the thing. These kids are getting pulled away and then just murk, blatter, there's just splatter immediately. It's very considering how how much of this movie is very less is more? It is very jarring to see all of a sudden, just a big giant splatter of blood. So the bully in Peter's room hearing this, comes out as he sees Brian and the other bullies are dragged out from the other things. Suddenly his cousin's friend comes around, calling to Brian. He is dragged up the wall, down the wall, up the wall, down the wall, calling for help, and then pulled behind the corner. Yeah. No, and that one is extra startling. Yeah, the up and down thing. It's like it's like he's being grabbed by a friggin shark in the water. Yeah, something, so around him, the hair starts to swarm now and Brian hears laughs. He tries to escape and crawl away, and he's quickly tangled up in screams as upstairs, the cousin comes and goes to check on Brian, but finds a puddle of blood and just his crutches.
1:09:25 Yeah, things are not going great for these young men. So he turns his head and suddenly the monster crawling along the wall ambushes him. Peter's still under his bed, highes here, smashes, he watches the body gets thrown from one side to the other side, and then the body comes walking around the corner, except the head is missing. It's it's a it's a pretty awesome reveal. Yeah, A headless body just kind of pupa and then hits against the wall, slides its, you know, back against the wall, slides down. Yeah, and just the headless body is just sitting there, and then we have a moment where there's just quiet. There's just quiet because we also see that mister Devine is driving quickly to the house and Peter watches the bully succumb to the floor. The monster then quietly approaches Peter, calming over the bed, and says that she was born this way and that some people when they're born, you know, cry with joy. His parents screamed, can't imagine why, so his father made her a pit while Peter got to sleep in a nice, warm bed, and that she's always resented him for having the life that she wanted and that's why she used him to finally get free.
1:10:25 And this scene could be cheesy, yeah, because she is giving the entire backstory of what's going on. She's just spewing it out all at once. Yeah, But she sits on top of his bed knowing he's underneath it with a with a jack o lantern and just recites her life story to him with joy. Yeah, because now she's free and she can have all the vengeance her heart desires. And torment Peter because as she goes away this one time revealing the jack lantern, now the severed head is stuffed inside the pump One of the. Boy's severed heads is that the head that was missing for the body in the hallway is in the pumpkin.
1:11:06 And the way they show it is the pumpkin. It lands in front of the kid, and it takes your eyes a second. I get to realize to notice it because the pumpkin's obviously not lit up, ye, because there's no room for a candle. So like as you look through the eyes in the mouth, you realize that is a human head. You see eye, you see a mouth. It is very effective And at first when I saw it, I didn't catch the face first, so I was kind of like, why is he afraid of the though oh oh yeah, oh fair. So naturally he's screaming his head off, and we also see that the monster is now dragging him to the room behind the clock, locking it saying you'll be safe in there. So Miss Devine arrives at the house right at this point, and she finds the house, of course, in chaos. The blood's everywhere, and she hears something crying and I say something because it does sound like Peter, but I don't think it's something.
1:11:51 Is an operative word here? Yeah, So she also finds the hair moving on its own around a couple places, and that's when she goes into the kitchen. She's quickly scratched by the monster and she begins to crawl, coming across some bodies as the monster crawls right towards her. She tries to leave, but finds the door is locked now and she calls to Peter, who tells her to run. He goes, Miss di Vine. Run, Yeah, that's all he has to say. Run. So Miss Devine wanders upstairs, coming across the headless course in the hallway as Peter calls to her to keep running, and she ends up in his room, and that's when she also finds that his hand is now sticking out through the hole in the wall that he had previously been looking at. Yeah, the rolls have been riversed, yes, so, Peter states, So Peter, excuse me, So she tells him she's not leaving him, and suddenly the monster coming upstairs starts running towards the door as she shuts it quickly and seals it, and she goes, what the hell is that?
1:12:35 And that's when Peter says one of the best lines, my sister. But he says, it's so matter of factly, yeah, my sister. Yeah. So now as she's put a little dresser against the door to buy her some time, she starts pounding away at that drywall trying to get the kid out, and makes pretty short work of the wall. I mean, I was impressed. Yeah, But she also does that because once that door is shut, she hears the thing go back into the wall. So she's got to get him out of there. Yes, you got to get him out of it now. And as she gets the big hole and she pulls him out, moves the dresser and they go right out the door, hoping to outrun his sister. Unfortunately, as mister Vine looks back though, she watches Peter get sucked back up into the hair and pulled back into the house as the door shuts, and now Peter is in the pit where she once was yes.
1:13:20 And that was another really harrowing moment, because they run through the hallways, they run down the stairs, they have the keys because they have to have keys to unlock the front door. They unlock the front door as they get out. I remember as the watchers like, uh, because I noticed that when she got down the steps, she was by herself. You look back and he's calling for her, and he's grabbed by his hair and just pulled right back into the house. Now he's down in the bottom of that pit that he had only observed, Yeah, during his grounding. He's down there finding out just what horrors await him as his sister relishes, Yeah, telling him what hell it is to live down there. He finds an old teddy bear with the name sarahritten on the tag, and suddenly up above she climbs into the pit with him, and he asked, you know, why is she like this? And she comments that she was born this way and no one loves a monster.
1:14:08 Yeah, and she says something something along the lines of a well, you were learning to play and and walk and talk. I was learning to climb. I was learning to climb and and and scratch and bite. Yeah, And that is such a great moment. Yeah, So miss Devine calls to Peter, but his mouth is quickly covered by the monster, and Devine comes down the stairs telling Peter, or telling the monster that if it kill it, if it touches Peter, I'll fucking kill you. Yeah. And like I said, I really think that opening scene was such good storytelling because she shows him how to deal with the spider. She takes an active interest in him, and when she's worried things aren't right at home, she pops by just to get a little FaceTime with his parents. And now she's in the ultimate space of that.
1:14:51 She's fighting some kind of a monster creature thing. Yeah, do you even? Movie? Will be right back, Welcome back to Do You Even? Movie? As they start fighting, I love where we go because as she's crawling toward her as the monster's coming, her long hair is still down there the pit and we pull a kind of twisted Rapunzel from Hell as the little boy climbs up the hair and as he's climbing up the hair, and I also just love that her she has like eight feet of hair, because when would she ever get a haircut? So as he's climbing it's pulling her backwards so she's not able to get a hold of her, and then as he pulls, she starts hitting her yes, and they work together to throw her down into that fucking pit where I guess she.
1:15:52 Belongs, releasing the releasing the door sealing her in, and so she's now suck in the pit. They are free and they're celebrating, and that's when the monster begs Peter to help her, because you know it's family, and she even says, you're a killer like me, and he shouts no, and that's when the monster says, well, you know this is not the end, right, I'll always be with you wherever you go. You're always going to be thinking of me at any moment, And we see that Peter is now in his room. A little later on, he pulls his covers back and there's the hair covered in spiders on his bed. He screams, shuts his eyes, opens him back up and his bed's completely fine. But then the figure rises behind him and says again, I'll always be with you. And that is the end of twenty twenty three's Copweb.
1:16:34 Always good to have a happy ending, yeah, because in reality he'll be tormented by nightmares while he goes through the foster care system. So would you like to know some fun things about Cobweb? Well, I feel like we've already talked about all the fun things in Cobweb. No, I would love to know more. So. The budget is estimated to be thirteen million. I've also seen thirty five as the number. There's no confirmation. Thirty five seems high, yeah, I mean, but some movies just have shockingly high budgets. I mean, we were talking about Last Voyage of the Demeter. It had almost that size budget, and so, I mean, I would I could believe either budget, but I would like to think it was on the lower side. I mean, there aren't a lot of actors in it. There aren't a lot of big set pieces, there aren't a lot of special effects.
1:17:19 And even the actors, I mean Lizzie Kaplan and the Anthony Starr, Yeah they're names, but they're not huge names. Yeah. So I don't know though, But so thirteen million dollars budget estimation released October twenty, twenty twenty three. Of the limited release box office total was ten million. Basically, I mean, you know, it was a little bit of a fluff but then Hulu swooped swooped in and got it and put it out there, and I'm sure that they're doing a lot better now. So it is filmed entirely in Sophia, Bulgaria. See that makes me think the movie's a little cheaper too. The movie was notoriously undermarketed, with virtually no advertising by its studio, despite heavy hitting producers such as Seth Rogan and generally overall positive response by critics and audiences. The film also opened in July against Barbie and Oppenheimer, despite having a distinctly Halloween atmosphere.
1:18:04 Yeah, I didn't know much about Cobweb at all. If they had marketed it as a Halloween movie, I probably would have went and saw it. I would have been much more aggressive to go see it. Oh hell yeah. So. Director Samuel Boden stated that they looked at over fifty different styles of wallpaper for the look of Peter's room, as you wanted it to not have a scary haunted house look, but the look of something that's scary to a child in their own way. I thought when I watched it, the wallpaper was kind of off putting. Yeah, it just kind of. Felt I think it's a hot air balloon plane. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. He even stated that to this day he still has dreams about all the wallpapers they looked at. I mean, the horror mushroom soup was used as the broth that Peter poisons his parents with.
1:18:46 Oh, I mean it looked like they blended it or something. Yeah. Yeah. Boden prided himself on Kaplan's wardrobe selection and movements as being the character that would be found in a brother's grim's fairy tale, trying to be as far from reality as possible. I think that's really accurate. Yeah. Actually yeah. The street exterior, house exterior as well as the exterior were built or excuse the street exterior, house interior as well as the exterior were built on a big set in Bulgaria. Two different houses were constructed for the front of the house as well as the back of the house. The inside of the house was ten to twelve different sets, and the studio was in an old ex Russian ex communist studio with lots of debris and remnants. Alan Gilmore, set designer commented, the studio had lots of debris and remnants and I could borrow from that, so in a way I could borrow from Eastern ideas, Eastern design. So for example, the refrigerator they pull from the wall, you see the secret door, that was a rushing refrigerator. I made it American, so I restyled it as an American refrigerator.
1:19:41 So it took a lot of their world and manipulated it back into our world. And that gives Cobweb a slightly strange feeling because it's familiar. Because again, American design, especially mid century and older American houses, have a certain esthetic to them. The house itself is a character in the film, with its sense of decay, sounds, and strong shadows throughout. I mean that makes sense. And the idea of taking like an old Russian refrigerator or Soviet refrigerator and painting it and styling it really feeds into the theme of the movie that things are not as they seem, Yeah, which I think is really charming. And I really do. I know I said it earlier, but I really do think that the house is like its own character. Yeah. Woody Norman commented on working with Simon that he would be very precise on how the scares should be executed for both the audience's reaction and should be along with the character in the film, Simon was known to shout on set precise actions for Woody when he was directing him, to the point he would even startle some with his loud voice. Simon prides himself on the scares as being more related to silence, with little movement and a lot of screams.
1:20:37 I mean, there's no doubt about that. Yeah, at the beginning of the film, it's bizarrely quiet for a while. Alexander Dragova, who plays the monster in the film in real life, is a contortionist, which allowed her to use standard body movements for the monster's movements without the use of effects. The monster's hair was made up of three different sets of wigs, and there were only two masks of different expressions for the whole time. I mean, I believe that. I mean, they were so good at barely showing the monster, yeah, which is always a good idea. When it came to the reveal of the monster what, he commented that it took some getting used to the first two weeks he had to see the mask without somebody in it so he wouldn't be terrified when shooting actually began. Working with Alexander, though he was very happy. I mean, I would have scared the kid. Oh yeah, I'm a bad person. Though Samuel but was attracted to the story due to storytelling through the child's eyes and the sense of being naive again. He took extra measures on the set designing for Peter's room to make items seem bigger to the viewers so that they would feel like a child watching it, also making the scares relate to being alone in your bed at night, slow building the fear to make it more psychological.
1:21:34 I mean, I think they nailed that pretty well. The kid definitely ties it together. The performance of him and how he's depicted works very well in the film. So what are your final thoughts on Cobweb. Well, I think it's a great one. I really do think it's one of the best Halloween themed horror films we've had of the last few years. I was definitely not expecting it to be that kind of film. Was expecting it to be I don't know a little bit more. I expected it to be cerebral and creepy, but I wasn't expecting that level of like that fun layer to it. I had a great time with it. I am still ticked that they didn't market it so that I, of all people, if we didn't know enough about the movie to go see in the theater when we're at the theater minimum once a week, then you're just not marketing it well. But I am glad that it's on Hulu so everybody can check it out and add it to their October watch list. Yeah, I really I thought it was fun as hell. I would definitely say it it'd be worth a rental, but you don't have to if you have a Hulu subscription. But I absolutely think it's worth renting. And I think if you're a horror movie aficionado then you would want to own it because it is a perfect addition to your library of creepy er almost almost like they were saying, Brothers Grim style horror.
1:22:55 It's a buy it for me as well in this case, because if there was ever a horror movie that you haven't seen October, this is it. Yeah. I mean that you cannot get better than this. The combination of Lizzie Kaplin and Anthony Starr as the parents super unsettling. You really do not know at all where this movie is going, and especially cannot predict that third act at all, not at all, and then I mean it just becomes a full on fucking monster movie at the end, like hell yeah, yeah, So it's a buy it for me, straight up fair enough. So we always like the in the show. With a couple of recommendations as well. I have two this week. First one twenty sixteen's Before I Wake Mike Flanagan's first film. A couple adopted orphan child whose dreams in nightmares and manifest I thought it was is it hush?
1:23:37 No? He did oculus oculis Yeah, yea, yeah, yeah, it was like his third or fourth, third or fourth. Yeah. I feel like this first because it got delayed for so. It did get delayed for a really long time. Yeah. His nightmares manifest physically as he sleeps. And my second recommendation twenty fifteen's The Visit. Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation. That one is a great one for the the eeriness of like family turning on you and things like that. My pick, because I love to ruffle feathers, is twenty twenty one's Malignant. Oh okay, let's. Talk about another film all about sibling rival or yeah. Yeah.
1:24:18 It's directed by James wand he's famous for a lot of great horror films. The Insidia saw conjuring. Yeah, And one of the things I liked about Malignant the most, aside fromhim being batshit, cuckubine and age and you can quote me on that that's a scientific term, is it was so polarizing. Yeah. I actually I don't love when movie fans argue with each other on the internet, but every now and then it's fun. It's funny to me when I'm like, oh, I just that was a hell of a lot of fun. People were so adamant that it sucked out louder that it was amazing. And it was one of the first, like big movies to get dropped to streaming really quick. Well it it went to the theaters really fast after COVID had kind of wrapped up yeah, so that people could go to the theater. So, I mean, it went to streaming really fast, but a lot of people caught it in the theater. We saw it in theater, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. But it's so wacky and out there and and even if you hate it.
1:25:14 I think it's worth watching it because it'll make you feel something. So do we have any emails? Well, let's check my magical phone. Magical device in your pocket, your brand new phone. My brand new phone because I needed a treat after all the moving. That's okay, I got an Apple Watch. Oh yeah, where you find that. No, we do not have any emails, so a reminder. 1:26:07 Would you like to know what we're talking about next week on the show? Sure, we are gonna be talking about twenty nineteen's Underseene Trick. That was one I was not expecting to like as much as I did. Yeah, really excited to revisit it. It's a lot of fun, a perfect Halloween movie. We started a Halloween party and then we don't leave Halloween. The entire movie based. So it's a really fun one and one I don't hear people talk about much at all. Yeah, when you first brought it up, I got really excited about the idea of talking about it at length. I was excited because I was like, do I still have that blu Ray? I totally still do. Of course you did. H Yeah, Trick is a lot of fun and really unexpectedly so. And I believe the same director as the Mylaody Valentine remake. Uh could be. I'm surprised. I don't know who that is off the top of my head. It's a French Canadian guy.
1:26:55 It is directed by Patrick lucy Er. Yeah that's him. Yeah, Patrick lues Here yep, Yeah, definitely did My Bloody Valentine. So we are talking about Trick next week on the show. Yes we are. And if you're listening to this over at Weekly Spooky, we thank you for joining us to talk a little bit about scary movies. And we'll be talking about four more every Tuesday this month in October. And of course, if you're in regular do you even movie listener. As you know, you'll always and I do mean always, see us next Tuesday. So take care everybody, and we'll see you then
