It's multiple out of Casey casem going off about a dead dog dedication that he is trying to come out of a break of and he's not thrilled about it. Well, this was a time for those who don't know.

And that's what that was an outtake from was he was sending it out. Ever He was also super famous for being Shaggy on Scooby Doo. He was and and only a portion of his powers have ever have ever been realized that meme. Well, I'm not letting me. I'm not letting it die. I know You're not like going to let it die because I've expressed how much it annoyed me when it first came out. How why would you hate the shaggy meme? I don't know. It was just annoying when it came out. Everything don't like fun, That's not at all what it is. I think you don't like fun.

I didn't realize Bushwhacked was that late in the nineteen ninety five starring Daniel Stern of Fame Alone Fame, and we're gonna talk about Uh, this is a film that I don't know. I wonder if any I mean, in the realm of hundreds of thousands of podcast episodes, there must be one other show. I know for a fact that there's one that that did this. Yes you do, YESO. We hate movies. Well, see they didn't love it's that was my second point was, and we're going to talk about how much we like it because we don't really talk about movies that we don't like. Yeah, do you even movie? We talk about movies that we enjoy a lot, movies that we recommend people check out, even when you pick a movie that's basically not available anywhere. I get, I give you props because when I when I, when we did Long Good Friday a couple episodes back, you know you weren't a big fan of it. You you didn't dislike it by any means, but you you were not a big fan of it, and you still had popular positive things to say about it.

Is highlight the positives of these films, but mostly talk about the films that we enjoy, because you and I both enjoy that more than discussing things we don't. I feel like it was the ultimate April Fools prank we could do. It's just like, hey, we're gonna talk about this fun movie, but first, here's twenty minutes April.

Yes, a film that I feel like was talked about right at the start of the show as one that we wanted to I believe, so yeah, that we wanted to talk about So I guess, as much as it pains me to say this, take it away, Daves. All Right, so we're talking about BUSHWACKX from nineteen ninety five, one hour and thirty one minutes. Now here's an interesting thing. So my DVD which we watched this on says PG. On the back. The ad says PG thirteen because apparently this movie has gone through a couple iterations. But the PG version that I have is the full PG thirteen. Verson apparently they like crossed out an F word, essentially took it out of the took it out of the movie. Wow, there was there's an F word, apparently uttered by a kid and that that I'm gonna guess it's probably one of the waterfall scenes.

6:27 Well, for the funny thing is I mean, I this movie was just a daytime cable player in my life. Yeah, so I didn't know there were any real swear words in the film. This is very true. Yet take cables where I saw this too, But we'll get to that. So this is rated PG as of right now. For crude dialogue, what was it the scene where he explains the birds and the bees? That could be it? I mean, he literally uses a Barbie and a Ken doll and starts mashing them together. We'll get to it. I will go yeah, oh god so, but my favorite parties was then he smokes a cigarette, watches Little Leno falls asleep. Oh so good. So. The director of this film is Greg Beeman. He was the director on a couple episodes of The Magical World of Disney, which in eighty six. In the in the mid eighties, I want to say Magical World of Disney was where they would premiere original Disney films for TV, and he directed two of those.

If there's one thing that I love more than almost anything, it is overwrought sequels. Too many sequels makes my heart warm. I do not remember Problem Child three. Justin Chapman played Junior Heally in it, and William Cat plays his daddy. He replaces John Ritter in it. Man couldn't even get I bet I bet no joke because of the way I understand like cheap sequels and quick sequels. I bet the Grandpa character is the only person who's returned. So he does Bushwhack did nineteen ninety five, following Junior in Love, and then he does under Wraps in nineteen ninety seven, the Disney Channel Mummy movie, Oh Okay, all Right, Brink in nineteen ninety eight, Martial Law TV series in ninety eight, Horse Sense, the Disney Channel movie in ninety nine, The Ultimate Christmas Present, which is another Disney Channel movie. In two thousand, does an episode of nas Bridges Jag Heroes, does the rebit of melrose Place in two thousand and nine, episodes of Smallville in twenty eleven, Falling Sky twenty eleven. It's very I feel for the Farley Brothers because they kind of came in right at the end of the type of humor. So a bumbling package delivery man finds himself on the wrong side of the law when a hair brain get rich quick scheme makes him murder, makes him a murder suspect. Daniel Sterns stars as in that mad Max Grabowski, who heads for the hills with cops hot on his trail when he's mistaken for a world famous scout leader. Max's escape plantics an uproarious wrong turn. His own description is he would deliver six packages and get a fifty dollars tip for each one. Is that a get rich quick scheme? I mean a fifty bucks I mean, well, okay, it's ninety five. Yeah, Oh justifer, inflation of fifty dollars is one point eight million dollars. Yeah, exactly, so that checks out. No, I mean, but I'm just saying I think get rich quick scheme is a bit of a stretch.

13:46 Well, let's go with my synopsis, then I'd rather not When he's framed for murder, he didn't a frame for a murder he didn't commit. A delivery man flees from the authorities to the hills where he's mistaken for a scout master and finds himself in charge of a kid's hiking trip. That's pretty good. You don't really establish the part. The only problem with that synopsis is you don't establish the the the you know, the suspense parts. Yeah, like you know, it should be like he took the kids on a hiking trip when in reality he's trying to clear his name or something like that. That's still not a bad synopsis, I mean better than calling it a get rich quick get ready. Yeah, but do You Even movie will be right back, welcome back to Do You Even movie? So I will say, Unfortunately, at the time of this recording, as Enrique likes to point out to me all the time, I like to pick movies that are not available.

14:46 Bushwhacked has been available in the past. Yes, it's been on various major streaming services. But right this second, right this second, it's Nowheersville and we blame the mouse. We blame the mouse. Indeed, yes, you would have to get a DVD of it, which I've I believe is still pretty accessible if you want to drop I think like ten to fifteen. Ah, lousy mouse. So getting into our cast of the film, we have Daniel Stern who plays Max Krabowski. He gets his start in nineteen seventy nine with Breaking Away, then goes on to Starting Over in seventy nine as well It's My Turn nineteen eighty, Diner in eighty two, Blue Thunder and eighty three, Get Crazy in eighty three. Have you ever heard of Get Crazy? I tak okay. So Get Crazy is a movie from eighty three that is all about this venue that is doing its final New Year's Eve show, but the owner suffers a heart attack, so evil Ed Begley Junior moves in with his goons to try and get the facility for this evil Ed Bakelee Junior. Like a combination of Evil Ed from Fright Night and Ed Bagley Junior.

His voice is what pulls that show together so well, is that he just has this earnestness to him, especially when he's not trying to be silly and funny. Absolutely, and a lot of people, I mean, you've probably seen more of them than I have don't really realize that Stern's done some really strong acting. He absolutely has, but he's also obviously Home Alone kind of cemented him as a goofball and Home Alone comes a little later because he does Leviathan eighty nine, Little Monsters eighty nine, Friends, Lovers and Lunatics eighty nine, My Blue Heaven in nineteen ninety, the same year he does Home Alone. Then he does City Slickers in ninety one, Home Alone two Lost in New York in ninety two, Rookie of the Year ninety three, I Love Rookie of the Year City Slickers too. The Search of Curly's Golden ninety four, Bushwhacked in ninety five, Very Bad Things ninety eight. Have you ever seen Otis in two thousand and eight Otism, Yeah, the big Fat Guy, Big Fat guy, and Daniel Stern's daughter is kidnapped by him because he wants to take her to the Prime. I remember so little about that movie, but it used to constantly be packaged with Doctor Giggles, with Doctor Giggles, And wasn't it once packaged with Lars and the Real Girl?

Whip it in two thousand and nine, The Next Three Days twenty ten, twenty twelve, A Christmas Story two where he played the old man you know. But for the record, when it comes to a Christmas Story too, not to be confused with a Christmas Story Christmas Yet or My Summer Story My Summer Stories, which was really a sequel in many ways. It was Uh. I think Stern was the best, the absolute best part of A Christmas Story two. Yeah, there's a scene where he sits with Junior and just talks about life. Yeah, that I actually like pulled up my heart strings. A lot in a really dumb movie. That happens sometimes. I mean sometimes you pull up my heart strings and you're just a dumb person. I mean this is fair too.

I have you seen any of his videos recently of just him on his farm or his ranch or whatever, just like playing with horses and whatnot. Oh. Yeah, he's in Chud, both him and Stir. Him and Stern were in chut alright, Remo Williams. The adventure begins in nineteen eighty five. Yeah, Highlander nineteen eighty six, Yeah, Crime Story eighty six, critical condition, Miamivice, the Freshman, Miller's Crossing. Now, Miller's crossing is a critical point in his career because once he made friends with the Cohens. That's all it wrote.

When you get type cast as a cop, you also get type cast as a bad guy in a weird like like like Ray Liota. It's like he was typecast like anytime you watched the movie, it was like, oh, here's a criminal or a policeman, yeah basically, or a detective or the detective didn't know what it was gonna be. And he was very similar. He was always he was always like either an authority figure who was bumbling or corrupt yep. Or he was straight up a villain. I mean, he's known for The Crow in ninety four as Gideon the pawnshop owner. Yes he is actually, Oh I remember he's seen in The Crow. No, No, it's like col where he's like, I knew you were gonna do that, The Rockets here in ninety one. I mean, he's in blank Man in ninety four. Yeah, no, he's great in blank Man, Bushwhacked of course. In ninety five, he appeared in Dream On Seinfeld, The Big Lebowski, Batman Beyond. He was a voice on the Man Who Was Who Wasn't There, The Drew Carrey Show, The Singing Detective, Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, Flags of Our Father's American Gangster, Two and a Half Men, Batman You're One, And of course he was on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia playing Frank's brother. Oh oh yeah brother. Uh. He unfortunately passed away in twenty sixteen from cancer. That we lost him. I think he had done like two movies. I want to say, like right before that. Wow. I mean he was a stalwart part of any of just about any nineties movie, it felt like in TV. Yeah, no, absolutely, I mean, like I said, he's one of those faces, you know, just for being in everything that you can think of.

Miller's Crossing is a great movie for one, but I forgot he's actually a really big role in it because he's one of the gangsters that Gabrielle Byrne has to fool in order to basically stay alive most of the movie fair enough, Oh, it's good, and then wrapping us up as Anthony Held. He plays Ryan Harp ragged in in this. He starts his career in nineteen sixty four with Another World Silkwood in eighty three, Teachers in eighty four, he's the narc Remember the student that's posing as the Yeah, I remember Miami Vice at eighty five, Guiding l eighty five, Outrageous Fortune eighty seven, Crime Story eighty seven, Postcards on the Edge of nineteen ninety and then of course Signs of the Lambs nineteen ninety one, where he plays what is it doctor h my doctor chillis. He's very memorable Yeah, he pulls off a sociopath like anytime appearance very well. Only only movies in here that I see him being a good guy is Teachers, which he's technically not really, And then I guess Deep Rising he's kind of a good guy even though he's not one of the criminal I don't know.

21:33 It's hard to say, but I mean Pelican Brief, the Client, Kiss of Death, Bushwhack, Porter Guy's legacy, Ay Cappy, Time to Kill in ninety six Deep Rising, eight millimeter Boston Public Red Dragon, I mean he's he always plays I'm sure an eight millimeter he didn't play a reprehensible creep. Yeah, no, not at all. Yeah he's not. He's not possibly a big twist or anything like that. We need to do eight millimeters I would two. Sorry, I wasn't done. Have you seen eight milimeters? Of course, I've seen it. Millimeter two. It's not bad. Gosh, you think I'm some kind of sucker now just because I haven't seen Problem Child three. I mean hurt. That hurts me. And I do want to give a shout out to Brad Sullivan in this who plays Jack Erickson. Brad Sullivan is another one of those actors He may not know his name, but you know him from things. Just to give you a few of his titles. He was in Slap Shot, The Sting, He's been in The New Kids, Miami Vice, He's been in Funny Farm, The Dream Team, The Abyss, True Colors. I mean, the man's got quite a resume, but this is one of his last. This is his last theatrical film, right right, so he really could have stopped The New Kids.

Definitely one thousand percent on cable. It might have been on HBO at first, but that ended up being a very common Saturday and afternoon Sunday afternoon on cable. It wasn't really on the USA network when I was a It was more on like Fox Family and places like that, ABC Family, TBS, ABC Fan. Yeah. Yeah, through the amazing time of Fox Family. I did not. But no, I'm not one hundred percent sure when I saw it either, but I know it was always on TV growing up. I remember like I would catch it mostly about like the last twenty to thirty minutes when I would get off the bus, like at like three thirty years I think even Spike TV was airing at a bunch. It wouldn't surprise me. But yeah, it wasn't until literally like six or seven years ago. I finally saw it uncut when I got that DVV from a video store that was going out of business. I no, I did not cause them to go out of business. They were one that was out of my town and I was out there for my job at the time, which I was doing sales, and I saw that the video store was going out and they had an amazing sale. You could have done more? How could I have done more? I bought Bushwhacked Hoosiers. There's another one, a maximum Overdrive, because I think I flipped that because it was not an easy one to find at that time. Well, you didn't buy You picked their bones.

We meet Maxcarboalski played by uh Daniel Stern, and he is on his job and he stops off at this gas station and he asks for two packs of Marlborough, some snowballs, and a jumbo coke, which establishes that he is a man child. He is as he's as he literally is walking out of the store and he's cramming a whole snowball in throwing it into like somebody's backpack. And then I think he I can't remember what he did. He did something with a coca with a coca or not glass cup, the paper cup. Yeah, I was distracted by us fighting with your dvd. Ah yeah. So the book a good thing about when you when you have an old timey DVD that you have any v at the Elixir shop. You have the option of full frame or widescreen, but the disc is you have to either flip it over to one side or the other. And sometimes they don't even label them that. Well it's double sided, double sided. I bet you it was labeled. Well, you're just not quite I'm never gonna let you see it, so we'll never know. That's a fair Honestly, that's wise. I

So he arrives at his work he works for a Freedom Express, which is a delivery job, and he finds out from his boss that another package has arrived for him, specifically requesting him to deliver it, which is Timberline Incorporated. Yes, And apparently as his boss is talking to him about it, he's like, they always request specifically you yeah, got something going on there, and he's kind of implying that Stern has like a lady yeah, And we find out that that lady is certainly not lady Luck. No, it is not, No, it is not at all. Because he gets his package, it's supposed to be there, I think he says ten am, and he doesn't take it till ten pm. Well, remember that's the deal he made so they paid for the ten am because that's the first thing he says. He's like, ten am means ten am, and he puts it the seat. Next we goes, I'll get you out after work. After work. So he arrives at this huge mansion and he goes inside and he can't find anybody. He's calling to uh, mister Braggden, but he still can't find anybody, and he's like, oh, man, smells like something good cooking. So he goes up to this door which has smoke coming out of it. It's billowing smoke, and he's like, what's you cook it in there? Opens it up and it's a giant fire, just a towering inferno. And that's when he is ambushed by Agent Palmer, who is played by Pallito and McMurray who is played by Tom Wood who many may know as what is his name? In the sub Substitute of The Fugitive, he's the one that loses hearing when Tommy Lee Jones shoots.

He says, don't do anything stupid, and he's like, you can't stop me, which is which I did not remember that line from the years of rewatching it. That made me blurt out loud laughing, because he, yeah, don't do anything stupid, you can't stop me. Heum like it's a second floor window too, Like he falls and when he lands, the box that he was delivering breaks apart, and it's full of money, full of money, which we find out not counterfeit money, not counterfeit now, but money that's meant to be removed from circulation, old money. The weird thing is when they talk about that later and they say that like so and so was supposed to get rid of it, They never once mentioned that that would mean that he was either working with the Secret Service or a member of the Secret Service, because in the Secret Service, literally their two jobs are protect the President and handle counterfeit money.

So he calls his boss and he's looking for information. He wants to find out if there is anything for another package for Timberline Ink or if Rheinhart Bragdon has another package coming. And the guy his boss is like, you know, do you know you're on TV? You know that they're saying there's still somebody. Yeah, And that's when we find out that mister Reinhart was found at the scene of the crime and he was dead and the only way they can identify and beyond recognition, the only way they can identify him was the teeth. And the guy who says that has a baggy full of his teeth, and he's like, it was really gross. It's really gross. So that's when he finds out that they do have another package and it's supposed to be not delivered to the mansion or anywhere near town. They have to go to Devil's Peak, which is in the mountains. So he's like the Devil's speak, all right, well, I'm gonna go find it. And that's when he also finds out that this was said to be a robbery of one million dollars of old money, and that they are considering him extremely armed and dangerous now and everybody's looking for him because he is now the murderer of Reinhardt. I extremely armed, extremely They're like, he's just got like fifteen guns, like just tied around every joint and every muscle is just a gun. I think he was armed at extremely dangerous. No, he's extremely armed and dangerous. Got gotcha. That's gonna be the name of your of your like your solo movie where you're like you're attempt at being a B movie action star. Extremely armed and dangerous, I'll take and you're just like, and there's guns like on every part of everybody. Oh my god, extremely armed. It reminds me

So that's when we get introduced to Troop twelve, which is a group of kids that is ran by one of the kid, Gordy. His mom is running the troop and she's doing the best she can with getting their badges in native ways. Well, and the reason for that is that they clear they live in the dead ass middle of suburbia. Yea. So she's like trying to give them things to do that her scout's like in the front yard, their baking, back around the neighborhood. They're they're build a fire was they ended up making weenies out back in the fire pit in the fire pit, and they're all kind of bummed about it because they're like, we want to go camping, we want to do whatever. Yeah, you know.

30:27 And then she surprises them, yes, and Miss Patterson opens the door to reveal that they have a new person joining their group, Kelsey, a girl. E. So that's sorry, Dave baby boo that she's a girl. Oh my god, that's what we see. Max is trying to steal a car he goes up to one car in the car alarm is like, you're too close. Get away, You're too close, get away. He goes to one car over and there's a guy asleep at the wheel and he's like, oh, I'm sorry, and then he gets into one car as a woman gets out, and then he gets into the gets in the car and in the backseat of kids like miss I have to wee. No, mister, I have to pooh. We have to pooh yeah, And that's when we see the car pull away and the kids just left on the side in his car seat, his car seat, looking confused because he felt that he had to tell just the random person he has to go pooh. 31:26 Movie? So we see Gordy's mom packing the kids up. They're getting ready to go on this trip, and that is when we also see Jack Erickson once again played by Brad Sullivan, and he is shaving while driving his hummer jeep whatever you want to call it. And that's the one thing we glossed over a little bit. We revealed the girl in the troop, but also that they've got a special overnight retreat overnight and they're gonna have this guy who is being introduced now shaving, famous buckout master, Yes, famous scout master Jack Erickson, shaving with the butt knife as he drives, and that's when we see Gordy's mom is getting ready to pull out and they're like, you know, has anybody seen Dana And they're like, oh, well, his dad said he couldn't come because he's too small. And then they're pulling out and Dana's running up with his permission slip magically signed yes, and he's constantly getting in a fight with the kid who's rotund in the goop. Because this is a nineties kids movie, so there's a fat one in a run that's exactly always always, and I like that in this one they had the runt in the fat one constantly fight, yeah, because whenever he would go like you need anything because you're fat, and he's just like, shut up punk and then they like fight each other. It's good stuff. So we see Ericson driving, we see Gribolski driving, and they all both arrive at the same general store and Max goes in to find out where Devil's Peak is, and that's where Ericson walks in and he's like, is that your car outside?

32:42 And he's like, yes, it is, and he goes out to see that he has a sticker on his window that says I am an inconsiderate person because he parked in the handicap spot. And also while he was in the store, he was standing in front of the TV to block that they were showing his face like a news the general store owners like, they're talking about that guy on the New Murderer. Yeah, after he has the little fight with the ranger guy, the guy from the store comes out. He goes, they're saying, mad Max Supobowski is coming out this way. He said, a stolen vo directly in front of right in front of it, and that's when he realizes it. So that's when Max pulls out his gun and he's like, all right, everybody inside. So then he, uh, we never see what happens to the General store. I assume he killed him in cold blood. In cold blood, so that's when he is going to have Jack take his hands to the steering wheel. He glues them along with his chin, and that's when he has him drive the stolen Volvo.

33:34 So he's on the cops trail and that Max can get away in his gee hummer thing. Yeah, he uses the glue that he used to put the i'mond in the person thing on the window window. I'm going to start putting that on your car, don't you know, just when you were in Oh yeah, you're right. Maybe just once, Oh just once? Yeah. If I do it every time, that's gonna get cruel real quick. God. So the kids in Gordey's mom wait for Jack to arrive, and that's when Max gets mistaken by Jack because they send a share out after and the sheriff finds him because he's in the car. That says scout Master ericson. Yes, so Dave mistake him, mistake Max for being Jack. And that's when he ends up going on Troop twelve's overnight with them because missus Patterson thinks that's who he is. Well, and I mean, what's he gonna say?

34:15 No, no, no, I'm the guy that you want to send to prison. Yeah. So of course Jack Erickson is a famous scout master. So the first thing they do is ask Max what was it like climbing Everest? And he takes a second to think, think, and then he goes it was bitchin' or it was a bitch. It was a bitch yeah, And the kids are just kind of like whoa. And he's like, you know, I had to I had to climb these peaks. And it's something about the Himalayas. I can't remember the exact line. Oh, well, he said the wrong the wrong country. Yeah, the Himalayas where and then he mentioned the Alps he had to go across them. But then he's like, I had to cross the Alps to get to the Himalayas. And they were like whoa. So the kids are won over. Gordy's mom thanks him, and as Max is chewing gum, she's like, you know, I try to not have gum around the kids. So it's hilarious because he goes he goes to spit like into her hand, and she's not put her hand ups. So then he just grabs a napkin, a napkin that he conveniently wrote the Devil's Peak address on, Yes, which may come back into the movie. I doubt it. No, I doubt it. But but and and one of the running gags in this film that I really like is there's a lot of Stern not having an answer to the kids question. So he just kind of BSEs yep, and then kids being kids, just go oh right, and then on it. Well, well they start to.

35:30 But there's that thing where it's like if you just if you just exude confidence enough to a child, they'll believe you exactly. It's very, very funny. So Max and the kids hit the trail and he tries to trick them by telling them to go ahead and walk ahead, because the first thing he does is grab one of his cigarettes and he throws the pack down, and they're like, you're not gonna leave that, are you, And he's like, oh, you're right, I gotta cover my tracks, tosses it over the side, starts raising his tracks, and he tells the kids to go ahead. He's gonna catch up with him because he's gonna watch him a distance and evaluate their walking. Yeah, so he goes off into the woods, stumbles around for a bit, his cigarette gets broken, he starts getting confused, and then he pops out right in front of them on the trail. Yeah. Yeah, it's very clear he's not in hiking shape. No he is not. It's almost like those two snowballs and a jumbo coke don't really pay off for that crazy let alone the cigarettes. Yeah, a loan of cigarettes. So that's when they ask him why his nickname was Spider and he's like, why are you calling me Spider? And they're like, what's your nickname? He's like, you know, how did you How did you get your nickname? And he's like, I got it because the last kid that it called me Spider said it one too many times. And the kid's like, well, if he called you one too many times, that that means killed him was already Spider. Yeah. He was like, why would they call you Spider one too many times if your nickname was already Spider? And he's like So that's when we see Jack ericson. He gets pulled over by like eight or nine cop cars. Yeah. Yeah. They are like like because they think he's a you know, a man on the run and they think he's mad Max. Yeah, so they like they pull him over and they are just screaming like get out of the car, put your head up.

36:51 He's like, I can't. I love the choice to glue his hands to the steering wheel and his chin. Yeah, that's just such a great touch. No, it really is so troop twelve arrive at a campground and Max is getting eaten by mosquitos and he's like, they're attacking me. So that's when one of the kids offers him some mosquito spray, but he doesn't understand, so he just drinks the whole. It's a mosquito like it looks like after shape. Yeah yeah, So he starts drinking it and they're all just like, uh and it you know, of course it makes him Ralph, makes him Ralf and he's just camera. It's a tasteful film. Yes, And that's when the kids talk about, you know, where they want to go because they're by this sign and they're like, you know, we could go to Coyotes Den or you know, oh man, it'd be so cool to go to Devil's Peak. And that's when he gives Devil's Peak. What do you know about Devil's Peak and they're like the son, Yeah, it's on a freaking sign. So that's when he decides, you know, if the kids want to earn their six badges that they're missing, they need to hike the Devil's Peak and that's how they can get those badges. Oh yeah, So he convinces the kids they're going to hike the Devil's Peak.

37:45 So back at the trail entrance, Agent Palmer and Age mc murray arrive and they're alerting miss Patterson that Gerbolski has taken the kids and that he is not Jack Erickson. And and uh, boy does she look thrilled when she realizes she just handed her own sigh and all of the neighborhood kids Yes to a believed murderer. Murderer, Yes, terrified, terrified, And Jack goes along with Agent Palmer and McMurray because at first they're like, you know, oh, well, we're not taking you. And he's like, I know these trails better than you do. You guys know your instincts. I know how to how to like survive on this trail. So I'm gonna be of help to you. And he's like, you can come with us, but remember I'm in charge. I call the shot. I call the shots. So the kids reach a higher point and Max, using his binoculars, finds out the police are onto him. They've arrived at the entrance, and he tells the kids they got to hide. One of the kids, uh spots a baby bear and Max is like, you know what what are you freaking out about? You know, it's just a little bear. So he goes over and starts wrestling. Not wrestling with him, he's playing with nd and starts biting his hand and then pulling really hard. They put great like crunching sounds.

38:45 Oh, and that's when he turns around to see that Mama bears and thank goodness, he faints. He faints as the kids all run for safety, and then they go, wow, he's doing exactly what the book says. He's playing dead, playing dead. So the bear molests him for just a little while, just a little bit, hurts him a little bit, but he's unconscious, yep. And then the kids all come back to him and they pour some to wake him up. That was incredible, All you played dead for the bear And he's like, you know, yeah, I did that on purpose. Yeah, it's what you good at it. Yeah. So that's when we see that Paulmer McMurray are just being left in the dust by Jack because he knows these trails and like they they're you know, they're in suits, they're carrying their guns, they're getting winded, and Jack's just going right ahead of them. So they reach one side of the cliff, the kids in Max dow and that's when one of the kids has to pee and he's like, all right, we're just gonna go ahead and take a pee break. So palm Ber standing on the other side of this cliff, starts getting what he thinks is a mountain missed on him, and in a way, he's right, he's right. It was some mellow yellow that I forgot. I forgot about that scene. Yeah, a group of kids who are just pissing on this FBI agent, yep, and it's pretty delightful.

39:51 But he's like, ah, just what we need a spring shower, a cool spring shower. And he's like, that's not rain, that's not rain. So that's when Palmer looks up. He calls to the kids and uh. That's when Max is like, all right, we got we gotta run, we gotta hide. And they decide to take off towards this bridge that they see, a very very very long rope bridge. Rickety long rope bridge. Yeah, no, like crazy long. It's like Indiana, Joe, I just get ready to say, yeah, it's like Temple of Doom almost. So that's when he tells the kids to run across. He runs back to see if they're still on his trail, and of course Palmer and Jack are closing in on him, so he gets the kids all across, running them across the bridge. He gets to the bridge and he's like, all right, I'm gonna chop this thing down. Except he looks back and one of the kids is like, uh, miss, it's the door he won that has the medicine and stuff. Yeah, yeah, what was it?

40:44 Fishman? Fishman? Yeah, Fishman, and Fishman's like, you know, I have vertigo going on right now. I can't move. And he's like, you know, tell yourself that you're you're a sexy stud or something said. He says, say, I'm so and so Fisherman, I can't remember his first name. Super stud, super stud. Yeah. What He's like, it'll get me confidence. He says it a couple of times, and he's like it doesn't work. It doesn't work. So but eventually he basically tells him like he's gonna kill him for the best. He's like, he starts to go chopping and he's like, you're crazy, and he's like, get across here. Maybe I am crazy. Yeah, So he goes to chop the bridge. Of course, Fishman makes it across, and that's when Jack reaches the bridge and he cuts it right in time. You're skipping an important thing though, oh am I Fishman runs across, Yeah, and immediately gives Stearn's character a big hug hug. Yes, and he goes, I did it, I could do it. Yeah, And it's actually like a really beautiful moment to kid, yeah, because that's what you know, you hope to get from being in Scouts or whatever, is to challenge yourself.

41:36 And he's a nebbish, little nerdy kid. Yes again, Like I said, you got the fatso you got the run, and then you gotta have the nerd. Yes, and he was the nerd. So it's a really sweet moment where he runs across and hugs him. But then yeah, he tells him to go and run off with them, and then he goes and starts cutting the rest of that bridge down. And that's when Jack and Palmer reached the cliff and Palmer's like, you know what's next and Jack's like, well, what do you think we're gonna have to go around? Yeah, So they just bought themselves some time, so they stopped to make camp and Max accidentally grabs a bee hive, mistaking it for a pine cone because they need to gather pine cones to start a fire, and he's excited because he's like, this one's the size of a football. God. So all the kids start getting excited because like, throw it, throw the pine cone.

42:16 Yeah, yeah, and all the bee high and the beehive opens up, the bees swarm out, and then that's when we see him getting very very badly stung, because the kids in the next scene are pulling the stingers out of him. And that's when also one of the kids are like, how is he this guy if he didn't recognize a beehive, So they're already a little suspicious. Yeah, it's a little suspicious. So back with Palmer and Jack. Jack explains or Jack's trying to catch a fish, and that's when Palmer's like, you know, you're not gonna get anything in there, and he's like, sir, i am the thin khaki line between morality and depravity, which is such a great line, but only he could deliver it, so sincerely yes, And then we get to the scene that we've already mentioned as the kids had one of the kids have brought a playboil long for the overnight. Oh yes, and Stern finds them with it and he's like, you're not supposed to be looking at this, and then they go Spider, will you? And the best the best part is that one of the kids, I think it's Fishman, has the manual and he's like, you know, I don't think I'm supposed to tell you kids about that, and Fisherman's like, oh no, it says here in the manual you're supposed to answer any of our questions we have about it. So that's when Max decides to borrow Kelsey's barbie dolls that he has, and we cut away for a little bit while I think I think it's Palmer or No. We cut back to Miss Patterson as one of the parents are like berating her, like, if anything happens to the kids and whatnot, you know you're going to be I'm blaming you. And that's when we cut back to Max as he's smoking pretty much all of his cigarettes down and the barbie dolls are banging into each other and he's saying some things, and then David, they're making sweet love.

Oh, and then said the man smokes a sick watches a little litto and falls asleep, and they're all just like they're horrified, and there's any questions. So we see the kids next sitting around a campfire and Mac and they're they're both doing like would you rather scenarios? And Max goes ahead with his would you rather scenario, which is telling the story about how he fell into the timberline packages deal. Yes, which is this scene I love because as he's described me, he's like, you walk into a mansion and a man you've never seen before pulls you in and says, today is your lucky day. Lucky day. If you bring me I have six packages coming over the next three weeks. If you deliver him personally every day at ten pm, I'll give you a fifty dollars tip. And maybe you're thinking, you know, life is a delivery man's kinda kind of boring on event, so maybe this will be kind of exciting and fifty bucks, you know. So he slaps the fifty dollars in her hand and says, are you in? What do you do? And all the kids unanimously go, oh, this is so such a setup a scam that sounds legal, that sounds like a critic, sounds like a criminal. Nobody would do that unless they were would fall forward, unless they were an idiot or a dufe or a sleezeball. So that's when Max decides that he's going to go to bed, and he also passes one of the kids that is making a makeshift radio, because the next morning he gets his radio working. Yes he has a crystal diode radio. Yes, But I want to mention this scene

45:20 that we just talked about, Uh kind of made me see something I never really noticed in Bushwack before, which is just how sad Stern's character is. He's kind of a guy with no purpose, no real friends, bad not not good with women, has a dead end job. And it's like my heart kind of broke for him when they all were just like, oh, that's only an idiot would fall for that, Like, I'm going to go to bed. Well. I think the best thing is, though, is because he's starting to bond with these kids, to their opinion hurts his feeling, yeah, because they're like he's like, oh man, they're right, do you even move? He will be right back, welcome back to do you even movie. So the next morning, that's when they get the makeshift radio working, and that's when they hear about how they are and everybody's thoughts and prayers for the hostages that are being kept near the Devil's Peak right now.

46:22 Well, and then they say Troop twelve. Troop twelve, that's us. So they find out that the guy that has supposedly taken them is mad Max Krobolski. So they go to check his ID, confirming Max Krobolski, and of course, right as they're checking his ID, Max's gun is in his hand as he's asleep in the tent, and he like rolls over and points the gun at them, not intentionally. They're like, ah, so the kids panic, and that's when Jack sees the kids sending smoke signals next, and he's super proud of them, except that he's like, you know, oh, they're sending smoke signals. I'm super proud of them, except they say belp. Yeah yeah. He's just like he's like, well, they're kind of signaling. He's like, what does it say? Belp? Belp. So the troop puts together a concoction in a canteen to drug Max.

47:02 They've got like what cough syrup, sleep off ser sleeping pills, allergy medicine, everything the Fishman's got, you put into this canteen and shake up so it'll all dissolve. And as they're as Spider is away, he's just like, hey, Spider, hello there, Hi, you look thirsty. You should have a drink. He's like, I don't want to drink. Drink right now. He's like, but you're thirsty. We all can tell, right, And they're all like yeah, yeah. He takes it and he's just like reluctantly and he just opens it up and he takes this up. He's like, that is good, takes off running holding the canteen, drinking the canteen, and he's just leaving the kids in his dust too. I think there might have been some pseuda fed in there. It might have been. There might have been, So that's when they run off. He runs off with the kids and the kids start faking in injuries to try and stop him, and one of the kids actually calls him mister Kobolski. Yeah, Fisherman does of course, I think I sprained my ankle to mister Kabowski, He's like, what did you call me? Would you call me.

48:00 He tries to save it, can't can't say. But luckily as he's getting angry and trying to like come up with what he's gonna do. Stuff for a second, Oh, the kids all dropped to their knees and go, please don't kill us, mad Max. And that's when Daniel Stern falls over and then the drugs hit. Yes, so he passes out and the kids flagged down Jack and Palmer. But the kids are alerted when Palmer then shows up by himself, because they're like, wasn't there a second guy with you? He's like, no, no, no, it's always been meop, just me. Because one thing we forgot to mention is when he's going to chop down the bridge, freaking Palmer is about to take a shot at him. Yeah, he was gonna shoot Stern right there with a scoped rifle and he even says a million dollars all for me. Yeah. Well we know he's crooked. Well not just because the actor that is playing always playing cricket, yeah, but like he was there at the murder. Yeah, so he knows Grabowski didn't do it. Yeah. So Palmer takes Max, but the kids are suspicious of him. So Max is taken off by Palmer, who would intends to kill him. He's like, you know, don't hurt the kids, and he's like, Oh, don't worry, I'm just gonna hurt you. The kids then also see a helicopter, so they start trying to flag it down, but the helicopter flies right past him, and that's when Gordy goes something isn't right. So Max is taken to the helicopter and out steps Ryan Hart Braggden, who is still alive and talks about how you know he had his teeth knocked out before A million dollars a tooth not a bad deal, yeah, he says, like your teeth and he's like, I had a million dollars a tooth I figured not a bad deal. Yeah.

49:19 So Max has been set up by him, he had his death. The death was of course faked, and Palmer is working for Bragdon, who tells him to kill Max and then go and kill the kids, which is a great moment of levity as this is all revealing. He says like, kill him, Oh, these characters like I can't kill him. He's like, no, kill Krabowski and then kill the kids. So that's when Kelsey is like, you know, we gotta save Max. You know, you guys shield Drys for a second. The kids then show up using Kelsey's bras a sling shot, which they hit Palmer in the head training bra training bras a sling shot. They hit Palmer in the head, and they go to a hit bragged in, but of course he steps out of the way and they hit Max, and Max goes over the side of the cliff into the water and right into the drink, right into the head. The image So nineties of all these kids hold holding the edges of this training raw to make a big slingshot that launches two rocks at a time. So Max fallsen and that's when all the kids decide to go in after because they run away from Palmer and Ryan Hart, but they get to a cliff so they jump off, so Ryan Hart and Palmer get back into the helicopter. So now Max and all the kids are in the water. They're going through the water and they don't know where Dana is. All of them assemble at one point, but they can't find Dana. They're getting close to a waterfall, and that's when Dana, hanging on one of the limbs, grabs them and pulls them to the side. So good. So Palmer and Bragg dinner in the helicopter, and that's when the kids get there get the idea to throw their bags in the water to make it look like they died, because at that point

50:50 they'll leave them alone and they'll think that they're good to go. Fugit little fugitive action. Indeed, so we see all the kids toss their backpacks in. Palmer and bragged in laugh when they see it, because Palmer goes, you know, well, when we couldn't do, mother nature did for us. So fucking evil, so evil. So we see Max and the kids walking into a storm because now they're like, you know, well what now. And that's when they find a cave that they take shelter in for the night. And that's when Dana's dad tries to vent to Miss Patterson. He's like, you know, I'm sorry, Like you know, I'm a little distraught right now. And she's like, hey, why don't you take some money and call your wife because I don't want to hear this right now. So that's when she goes into the napkin to get some coins out of her pocket and finds the Devil's Peak address and she's like, well, now I have something. So she goes to look it up and finds out that Ryan Hart is the one that lives at the house. She tries to go to Agent McMurray about it, but he doesn't want to hear it, and she's like, you know, if you're gonna leave him this and I'll go do this by myself. So at one point she gets into a car and she drive him. But before that, the kids try to figure out a plan to let the world know that Max is innocent. As he's in the cave, you know, they're talking about what they're gonna do, asking him if he'll still be their scout master when it's time when they clear his name, and he says that he will be. It's a super sweet scene. It is no and this movie, and I always remembered the reason I would stick around watching it when it was on cable or whatever was that the ending sticks a really nice positives. So Max tries to leave in the morning, but Gordy catches him and that's when he tells him that they're gonna help him.

52:13 They're gonna help him clear his name, and you know, Max is like, okay, well we got about two hours until the truck arrives, so we got to scale this peak. And he walks with the peak and he's like two hours huh, so there might be a challenge. There is a challenge ahead of them. So that's when we see Jack's hummer being driven through the woods by Missus Patterson. We see the kids in max Is sending the peak. As miss Patterson arrives at Bragdon's house. She's looking through the window, knocking on the door. Nobody comes until she turns around, and that's when mister Bragden opens the door and we know that trouble is now a foot. Yeah, that's not good. It is not so Max and the kids reach the ledge as a Barnhill hands him a rock climbing gear because they're like, you know, we gotta get around this thing. And he's like, okay, well me and my dad climbed kill him in Jero and he's like, all right, the whole time you've been saying this, this is the last time to tell me if this is if you did climb it. He's like, yeah, we we totally did. So they set up the rock climbing gear it doesn't work out. So that's when they decide that Max is going to be the bridge for them to cross the side of the speat.

53:07 And it's worth mentioning the what was the name of the bigger kid Barnhill. He is constantly making up stories about how awesome his dad is, Yeah, which I suspect is in reality, and his dad's just not around. So he says he's a spy, he's crime climbed Mount Kilimunjarro, He's done all these things. So yeah, he's not exactly the most reliable he is not, yea. But it's hilarious though, because the Stern's character is literally laid between these two cliffs and the kids are crossing him like a bridge. Yeah, he's just holding on and his feet are on the other side. The best his fisherman comes to and he's like, you know, with your body masks, you should be able to hold for about another like three and a half minutes. He's like, oh, good, take your time. So that's when we see that they have reached the side and they have binoculars and missus Patterson has now been tied up by Palmer and bragged in as they are packing up the money to leave, and the kids notice this because you know, he gets the binoculars and he's like, what do you see And he's like, well, you know, I see the bad guys and Gordy's mom tied to a chair, so they got it tied to a chair. Yep.

54:09 So now they realize that they have to savor. So Max and the kids reached the house and the Freedom truck Freedom Express Truck arrives, delivering the last load of money, and that's when they devise a plan. So Bragdon and Palmer go out to leave, and Palmer notices that something's off because the kids are off to the side talk with Stern and he's like, you know, something's up here. So he finds the kids and Stern pulls a gun on them and he says that he's going to kill of course Daniel Stern's character. But that's when Jack Erickson, from a top a tree leaps right onto Palmer straight Rambo, No, that's because it happens in the First Blood. Yeah, he literally jumps straight down and lands on him. Yeah, it's good stuff. So he has the kid sees him and he's like, you know, I got an idea, takes the glue out of his pocket, and that's when they glue Palmer to a tree with his chin and his hands right on the tree. Bragden comes back as Max runs into the house to free Gordy's mom and he's trying to untie the knots he's interrupted those. Braggden tells him what knots that he's tied it with, and that's when he takes them both out to the side of the cliff and he's gonna have them pushed over the side. So Gordy runs at them, trying to get in front of them, but he trips over one of the deck boards that's loose, launching himself into the air as he goes over the railing of the cliff, and of course Gordy's mom's freaking out, Max is freaking out, and even now even Bragnet's freaking out as he takes off running, but Max tackles bragged to the ground, punches him, knocking his teeth out. Yeah, well, because he's like, that was one of my cats. Yeah. He endearing moment, Yes, a very endearing moment. So that's when Gordy goes over the side and he reveals that he's hanging on to a limb of the cliffs. So Max goes down and he tries to save him. He goes to the side and the limb starts standing on it, and the limb starts

55:39 cracking. So Gordy is hanging on this thing. Max is standing on it and he's trying to get Gordy's hand so he can get his weight off the limb. The limb starts to break more and that's when Gordy reaches up and grabs his hand. He pulls in. The limb breaks and somehow Stern hangs onto the cliffs so Gordy can climb to the top. When both of them reach the top, they year the biggest hug. It is and it's the climax of the movie. This kid, it's not really about the crime stuff. That's kind of the filler. And now we head into the big ending. And this is where I was saying that I picked up on something I hadn't really picked up on before. They award the kids, of course the great the best badges make them all Eagle Scout badge. Yeah. They surpassed all of the tenderfoot yeah yeah, and now they're eagle. They have Eagle badges. Yeah, and then in its surprising turn of events, he awards Stern. Yes. He's basically says, you, you know, you broke every rule in the book when you took these kids out, but when they were when those children were in danger, you showed the kind of courage and bravery that makes you a phenomenal courage, values and honor that makes you an honorable Scout leader. And he awards him with a medal that makes him a Scout Leader Ranger, Scout Leader Badge. And and the reason I like this is it ends with our main character gaining something a purpose. Yeah, because now he's well, he thinks he's gonna get to go out with just his kids, just said. The big gag at the end is they reveal, oh no, not just your kid, You're taking all kids. And then they all run up on the stage and I remember this was the I mentioned it when we were watching it, and they just put their hands on him.

57:12 They're just like touching him, and he's like ahah. And then we get the freeze frame fade to black, and that is nineteen ninety five's Bush Whacked. Your goddamn right. It is such a good movie. This movie's so much fun. So before we get out of here, would you like to know? Unfortunately, we don't have the budget for this film. I could not find the budget if I had to guess, uh, well, first of all, because it was a flop. Yeah, it was a flop. What did it make? So opening weekend it took in too a two million, nine hundred and eighty eight thousand dollars okay, and it grossed seven point nine million worldwide. If they called it a United States, if they called it a flop, then it probably costs between fifteen and twenty million series, maybe even more. I was thinking like eight to ten. No, Daniel Stern was a was an alessohnte. Yeah, this was a major studio movie. It was made by twentieth century Fox, the people who made Home Alone, twelve to be I bet he was fifteen to twenty yep, and that's why it was considered a massive flop. That's a bummer. Sorry, he's just sasd. So the original title was The Tenderfoot, The Tender The Tenderfoot was the original title. While the film's young cast had to undergo training sessions for the swimming and rock climbing sequences, Daniel Stern deliberately avoided any exercises. He felt it would better enhance just how out of his element his character was. That is an awesome way to stay lazy. Yeah, that reminds me of one of the greats in interviewing. What was his name?

It's so good So Originally considered to be a spin off of Home Alone, with Daniel Stern reprising the role of Marv Merchants trying to reform himself. It would have involved a backstory of him being sick of Harry's abuse and proving he could make it on his own. That and he also would have been far more rough with the kids after their antics.

So Peter fairly Farley, god, I keep saying fairly Peter Farley and Bobby Fairley I Can't do It You Suh had written the original script, but after the film was changed, they took their names off and were instead credited under the pseudonyms John Jordan and Danny Byers, which is what is on the film Well Hell. In order to warm up for the day shooting, Brad Sullivan would run backward around the ski complex the actors were staying in. Who's Brad Sullivan? Jack ericson Oh final theatrical film Wow Well. He was dedicated final film to Brad Sullivan before his retirement in two thousand and his death in two thousand and eight. Yeah, he is. He's such a good part.

Yeah, if you're a nineties kid then it's probably a rented or a by it, but it's definitely worth watching. I think that it got kind of maligned by feeling kind of like a cash grab, which in a way it was, and in a way it wasn't. They were trying to make Stern into a comedy lead. Yeah, they were trying to make him into a Jim Carrey, they were trying to make him to a Robin Williams. Yeah, and it just didn't It didn't click. But as a kid, I thought this movie was as good as any comedy, absolutely, so I liked it as a young man, and that was who was meant for. It's another time capsule of nineties kids movies that you just don't see anymore, Like, oh, yeah, that you can't make this movie today. I mean you could try, you could try. Stern's pretty old, but I mean, Daniel Stern is so good in this movie. There's so many great one liners, like like Enrique said, the ending just wraps it up perfect, and it's it's a fun movie. It's definitely got some humor that I don't know if a kid's film would contain nowadays. Oh no, it's super off, super off color. So but it's one of those movies that if you grew up watching a lot of cable, you probably saw this, and it's definitely worth a revisit if you never saw it uncut, because there's no telling what they cut out on TV. This week, we have nineteen ninety two's Captain Ron starring Kurt Russell and Martin Short Chicago. In inherits an old yacht, he his wife, daughter, and son fly to a Caribbean island and hire a dubious Captain Ron to sail them on an adventure to Miami. If you haven't seen Captain Ron, you really really need to. It's one of Kurt Russell's most underrated film. That's one that was constantly on Cinemax in HBO when I was a teenager, not even teenager kid. Yeah. And secondly, I'm going to recommend nineteen ninety five's Major Pain starring Damon Wayans. A recently discharged major finds himself commanding a group of mismatched cadets. I love Major have a major sauce fuddy mine. We were laughing, but I actually liked this. Shock is Toy Soldiers, Yes, and not to be confused with Small Soldiers. No. Toy Soldiers is a film about a group of kids who are in a boarding school in South America nineteen one, eighty one, ninety one. I was gonna say, ninety one, we're in a school? Is it in South America? Doesn't say, Well, it doesn't matter. They're in a boarding school that gets taken over by terrorists. And it's super fun. But but it's you know, a lot obviously a lot more serious, and I just think more people should watch Toy Soldiers. And the terrorist is played by Wishmaster Zone Andrew Divoff.

It's also a good pick too because we just lost mister lugassa junior and he's actually a part of that. Yeah, he's a major part of that film. And you also get to see young Sean Aston, Will Wheaton and Keith Coogan. Yeah, so would you like to know what we're talking about next week? Absolutely? Not too bad because you get to have another first time watch my friend. Oh gosh, as we are going to roll into Parenthood, the Ron Howard film starring Steve Martin and Mandy Steinbergen. It became a big favorite of mine in the last like eight years, I want to say, because it was one that we had recorded off of HBO, but it was on a crappy tape that kind of wore out in parts, and I just revisited like eight years ago and fell in love with it because it's so much fun, a heartfelt and a lot of great actors in it too. I mean, I'll give it a try. I was hoping it was going to be Parents in the Hood, Parents in the Hood, but this works too. So all right, well Parenthood next week?
