Henrique and David reject the easier interpretation that Hank simply becomes a monster. His final confrontation with Jacob instead combines love, guilt, coercion and mercy, leaving Hank alive but unable to enjoy either the money or the modest happiness described in his opening narration. Sarah’s protest as the traceable bills burn makes the cost brutally clear.
Production history covers the project’s long path through directors and stars before Raimi took over, a 55-day winter shoot across Wisconsin and Minnesota and weather problems that required shaved-ice snow. Raimi consulted friends Joel and Ethan Coen about filming in severe conditions, while the production carried separate lens sets to manage temperature changes.
