Nat 20 & Unwind: Vault of the Black Star
Nat 20 & Unwind — Vault of the Black Star (The Lost Missions Debrief)
The first simulation is complete. The team emerges from the Vault of the Black Star — shaken, half-intact, and missing more than a few memories. In this debrief, the cast steps out of the Syndicate’s simulation to unpack what just happened.
We break down how the mission played out, what went wrong in the Still Cold, and which mechanics tested the limits of sanity. From corrupted memory checks to zero-gravity combat, this Unwind episode explores how Vault of the Black Star blurred the line between player and experiment.
Expect laughter, theorycrafting, and post-mission confessions as the crew compares notes on The Archivist Below and what the simulation might be trying to teach them.

Nat 20 & Unwind is an after-session production of the Scalebound Syndicate. By scale and secret, we endure.
0:00 Yep, right. Just. Like, bury all of us, yeah. I made the mistake of allowing you to just kind of buy mundane items kind of at will. Welcome to Nat 20 and unwind here on Spotify and Facebook and good God, I honestly thought I had a chance to TPK you guys there, but hell of a job on that acid that I'm going to straight up right now. Going to give you an inspiration on that one. That was Moto Benet. Is that is that Canon inspiration? Yeah, yeah, yeah. All of your non Canon inspiration you want? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, no, this will go in Canon inspiration.
0:43 So yeah, great job. Osisa came in for the clutch right at the end of she did. I swear I have more Gray hairs after that then listening, going oh God come on get get home I need to go on. Like I need to save some. A gang needs some. Clothes. Oh yeah. So. Oh God, yeah, very good. I was going to do this at the end of the session. Does anybody want to do something reckless? Since, you know, this doesn't really matter in Canon. Yes, please. Like what? You know, make a draw from a deck of cards. I thought you were going to do it. I.
1:28 I was going to and then I forgot about it and I'm like in the middle of bad. I'm like. Oh. I mean, I could do it in the middle. I thought about it. Yeah, that's. What I was going to say in simulation was like at the end of, I was like, if we get to the end and we're not like do it, we're definitely going. To we're. Just going to do it right. Blades of Glory. One of these teleports you somewhere, right? Right, right. Curious if you would have pulled one what it would have been? It would have been Jack of Hearts which would have been the night which sounds good. You gained the service of 1/4.
2:09 Level Level 4. I would have busted a bit, probably 8-7 or eight. Oh, I did that. Yeah, so. Still not worth it. Still not worth it. I'm not going to change the tide. I would have I would have wished for Moon. Yeah, that's the one right below it. Yep. Yeah. So I mean. You are granted the ability to cast Wish spell 1D3 times. 1D3 Really. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh huh. He could just keep drawing cards until you get either that one or the one that kills you so. You either die, yeah, or you get a there's a Nemesis 1, right? You have to declare when you start how many you're going to draw. So sure, but.
2:52 Can you just say I draw one card, I draw one more card? Second draw would have been the Queen of Hearts, which is key. You would have gained a I would have given you probably a very rare item, a very rare rare weapon, which you know, depending on what item I would give you, would be either be worse or better than what you had originally. Not much. Beats the the Rod of Lord tonight. That's a sick. That's a sick item. It's so good. Yeah, it is. Although I do so I was kind of putting it into the the AIS to re name it and whatnots for warhammers. And it was like, hey, you want me to like kind of respect this to be for a warhammer. And I was like, I tell me more and they suggested some cool stuff. So I might ask you send you some stuff. Oh.
3:43 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I mean Jesse comes in for the clutch on the kill while Sisa comes in for the ultimate save. Not all of you dying. Probably because the timer was getting pretty close to being done. Cleric was clericking, helping those idiots. Right. Hey, I'm a cleric, I just know zero healing spells. I love that, yeah. I know, right? Absolutely not. I know a ton of control and I know a ton of like memory and time space manipulation stuff. Yep.
4:24 I can vortex warp like 8 times. Oh man. 90% of my stuff is healing or buffs and the rest of it is like serious damage but. Yeah. I freaking love clerics. Clerics over half of all stuff is. Charm and he was immune to the hand. Yeah. Right Charm's really good. Still, you came and clutched with that old monster, did you? Have a old monster at the beginning. No, Yep, Yep, I. Was very happy to have that and haste. I was just.
5:04 A hard. I was sitting here there though going man this is so much math hate math. 9 attacks. Like yeah, that's insane. And then? And all crits, all double damage, but not really because you got to roll AD 6 to see if it's actually a crit. Yes, but then even still, each one not only had the, you know, the regular sword damage, but it also had the fire damage on top of it. Yep, and then I added some time some extra stuff for friends. The one had necrotic, the one had, you know, trip or whatever superior.
5:44 Oh I was. I absolutely will be listening to this though after the fact and adding up just how much damage was done in one turn. Well, you had to have done at least half a 365. Yep. Yeah, you did close to it, yeah. Well, but I had hit him one turn before, yeah. Oh yeah, what? Four or five times there? Yeah. Yeah, so. Yeah, up until half of its life gone, you were the only one to have delta damage. Yeah. I was pretty much never going to deal it damage. Yeah, you were kind of screwed. Zevion Fire. Bolt, Yeah. Fire Bolt, Ray of Frost, Fire Cold, both resistant has advantage on all spell save DC's and magical effect DC's.
6:33 Baxter coming in giving it a disadvantage helped quite a lot. That's good, you know. So the the goodest boy came in clutch. I'm sorry Castez, Asmodeus isn't here this session, so he's the goodest boy today, so I'm expecting they can. Both be the goodest boy. Right, I'm expecting her to unmute and just immediately start yelling at me so. What if Baxter's a girl? The. Goodest girl, the Baxter. 'S can be the bestest boy, yeah. So, yeah, hell of a simulation, guys. Yeah, I've done that. Yeah, that was, that's a lot of fun because in my feeling, and you know, I, I kind of have this, this mindset too when we're playing at the Benevolent Badger with Jordan's.
7:20 Acquisition Guild. Yeah, the acquisition Guild you. Can you can play recklessly like you said? Yeah, exactly. Because what's the what's the consequence? I roll up a new character, Level 3 sold. I can. If I if I didn't have the vortex warp available, I still would have dropped the acid. Oh yeah, yeah. Just. Just so y'all know. I absolutely I wouldn't have been mad about it even if I. Did have no. I did have revivify at the ready though. Yeah. Even if she died in Canon from that I would have been like worth it. Worth. It absolutely so epic. So here's a question. Is vivified count as a healing spell?
8:04 Oh, or is it a manipulate time spell? Right. Think it's a healing spell. Good question. I think a healing because I have to double check. They they have to be. It has to be a certain age of corpse too. It's a necromancy. School. Oh, you're right. Third level necromancy. Yeah, OK. So I so I classified that as not healing. Yeah, I would agree with you on that. So did you specifically not want to have any? Like you went out of your way to not have any healing. Correct. Yeah, I have a couple of of features that let me heal, but like the temporary hit points. And I also have another one where I double my movement or something and I and if I come within 5 feet of you, I can heal you for like 2D6 or something.
8:53 OK. Oh yeah, so. That was a great that was a great session enjoyed it very much with that. That's yeah yeah got a long rest. Nothing unfortunately gained out of you know, as far as like weapons. I am going to however, because the you agents and I'll say So what the hell I'll give this to you as well. You all gained 1 syndicate favor for that at least. Oh, I think. I have two of those because I forget about them. Yep. I don't know what that is. So the syndicate has a effectively a a favor reward system or you know, redemption program where you can trade in these different.
9:39 Is that reputation? Kind it's kind of works kind of similar along reputation. I have a document in saved in here somewhere for. I have a syndicate reputation. Yeah, I think that I think that's classified as a favor here in this instance. So I I have it. Here somewhere. I don't. Oh, here it is. Redemption. I'm picturing it like the Zentarim currency. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So if I look at here, so basically what happens is 1 favor, you can request any sort of like provision, you can gain a little bit of leverage on a political like faction discussion, you know, basically maybe give you advantage or those kind of things. You can get more information, like, I don't want to call it medigaming information, but information that's not necessarily readily available for two favors. And then for three favors it is.
10:44 Yeah, because you can hold up to 5 3 favors. And you have to trade them in for these things. Yeah, 3 favors would be either. You can petition the Syndicate artificers to forge a relic from your prior adventures. We would basically I've been secretly keeping, I've been secretly keeping relics for each mission that the syndicate, after you complete the mission effectively they have a syndicate relic team, the SRT that go in, retrieve a relic from that mission, bring it back and archive it.
11:25 You would basically gain you would have to it would have to take one week of downtime, but after that it would bear your Ledger mark frustration reclaim if you lose it or stolen. But you would gain a custom very rare magic item for three favour. There are two relics from previous missions that that I collected, a tiny ember from the a freet thing and then the the Obsidian heart from yesterday. So what I would say in that instance is for those relics you can burn 3 favourites for a rare magic item, it would take one week of downtime. So say jump and I'll start the clock on one week downtime and you would gain that effectively the next session. And it would work similar to like Moldier where if it's lost or stolen it you can retrace it or reclaim it from the nearest syndicate outpost.
12:33 I'm picturing you do that now. Nero's just dispelled this bell and announced himself, like the Messiah, more or less back for a week. Here's another thing that you can do, and this has not happened yet, but if there is a mission failure and you don't die, you failed the mission but you're still alive, you can use all 5 favors to rewrite or seal an official entry to remove that failure from your Ledger because failures at a certain point do have kind of an effect. It's like a more of a slow burning exhaustion system.
13:17 So if that ever comes to pass, you know for like for instance if you fail to missions you gain disadvantage on all checks involving Syndicate War or Syndicate the Syndicate faction. Yeah, like using your syndicate status to try to get discounts on stuff. You'd get disadvantage on the persuasions and all that. Yeah, you're not quite blacklisted quite yet, but you you have the reputation. You're kind of like the black sheep. Exactly. You've got a basically a black mark on your record that has been spread across all the the outposts so. I have a question.
13:58 Sure. Can our participation in this impact canonically our ability to have a long rest? Oh, yeah, yeah, you would. You would have a long rest after this. Yeah. Oh, you're talking like somewhat implied because of the leveling. I think in the last mission we had practically just had a long rest. Like you used dispel magic on the bell. Oh yeah, used the. We we ended it right in the middle of. Everywhere. Yeah, yeah. So I believe that I have given you the ability the the benefits are short rest if I remember correctly, I'll go back and listen to the recording and let you know. But we were right in. The right in the middle of what did you say? Declared myself the Messiah.
14:44 Yeah, yeah. So yeah, that's right. In that case, then no, you would you would not have. So we need to. You would revert back to. No, no, no, you would still have the level you've you've gained the level, yes. OK, so basically in in my mind that is almost like because of a rallying cry from Neros you've all levelled up. Got it. Oh, OK. Goodbye Cass. Dara. I think we had expended practically nothing. Yeah, that was a great. One spell? Yeah. A detect man? No, I did that as a ritual though, so we're good. Yeah, yeah.
15:25 Like I don't think anybody used anything. So I don't think we need to bargain for 8 hours of sleep. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You will revert back to effectively where you were at the end of last beginning of the pyre. Hyde Accord Part 2 second. Section which is with a level. Cool. Correct. Yep. Cool. We got all the mechanics out. I think we are ready to say goodnight because. Good night. All right, everybody. Thank you so much for listening from everybody here at the P3 Podcast Network. I'm Spencer Hart.
16:06 We will see you next time. Bye, bye. Bye.
