SHOTS NEAR THE HEAD TABLE: THE COLE ALLEN WHITE HOUSE DINNER ATTACK

SHOTS NEAR THE HEAD TABLE: THE COLE ALLEN WHITE HOUSE DINNER ATTACK
A teacher of the month, a Caltech engineer, a hotel room on the 10th floor — and the night gunfire reached the President's first Correspondents' Dinner.

On Saturday, April 25th, the White House Correspondents' Dinner had barely begun when shots rang out near the magnetometers outside the Washington Hilton ballroom. President Trump, the First Lady, the Vice President, and members of the Cabinet were rushed to safety. A Secret Service agent took a round in his vest. The accused gunman: Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a Caltech-educated teacher and indie video game developer from Torrance, California — a man with no record, no warning, and a one-way train ticket from Los Angeles. Garret Fisher walks through what happened, who he is, and what we don't yet know.

1
00:00:03.200 --> 00:00:12.000
Caalaroga Shark Media. Good morning. I'm Garrett Fisher. This is

2
00:00:12.080 --> 00:00:16.640
Daily Crime Injustice for Monday, April twenty seventh, twenty twenty six,

3
00:00:17.160 --> 00:00:21.519
and we are doing something different today. We are setting

4
00:00:21.519 --> 00:00:23.640
aside the show I had built for you. We are

5
00:00:23.679 --> 00:00:27.600
setting it aside because of what happened Saturday night in Washington, DC,

6
00:00:28.440 --> 00:00:33.640
eight thirty six pm Eastern Saturday, April twenty fifth, the

7
00:00:33.799 --> 00:00:38.280
Washington Hilton Hotel. Inside the cavernous ballroom on the lower level,

8
00:00:38.439 --> 00:00:41.039
twenty six hundred guests were settling in for the White

9
00:00:41.079 --> 00:00:46.679
House Correspondence Association dinner. Tuxedos, gowns, salad plates being set down.

10
00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:51.679
President Donald Trump, First Lady Milania Trump, Vice President J. D. Vance,

11
00:00:52.200 --> 00:00:57.560
Cabinet members, congressional leadership, journalists, dignitaries all in the room.

12
00:00:57.920 --> 00:01:00.799
The President of the United States was the head table

13
00:01:00.840 --> 00:01:03.560
for the first time in his political career, attending this

14
00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:06.519
dinner as a sitting president for the very first time,

15
00:01:06.840 --> 00:01:11.640
and the program had just barely started. Outside the ballroom,

16
00:01:11.760 --> 00:01:15.000
up the stairs near the main magnetometer screening area, the

17
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:17.560
same metal detectors every guest had walked through on the

18
00:01:17.560 --> 00:01:21.000
way in. A man in his early thirties came barreling through.

19
00:01:21.239 --> 00:01:24.319
He was wearing all black in one hand, a shotgun

20
00:01:24.840 --> 00:01:29.040
on him, a handgun on him, multiple knives, and he

21
00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:31.359
had a clear line of sight down to where the

22
00:01:31.400 --> 00:01:35.879
President of the United States was sitting. Five to eight shots.

23
00:01:36.799 --> 00:01:39.599
That is the count law enforcement is giving us right now.

24
00:01:40.159 --> 00:01:44.280
Five to eight shots in maybe twenty seconds. Secret Service

25
00:01:44.319 --> 00:01:47.799
agents drew their weapons and engaged one of them. Took

26
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:50.319
around in the vest and is going to be okay.

27
00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:54.120
The shooter never made it past the checkpoint into the ballroom.

28
00:01:54.359 --> 00:01:57.920
He was tackled to the ground, handcuffed, and removed from

29
00:01:57.959 --> 00:02:02.159
the building alive. Trump was rushed off stage. J. D.

30
00:02:02.359 --> 00:02:06.079
Vance was rushed off stage. Robert F. Kennedy Junior was

31
00:02:06.200 --> 00:02:09.680
rushed out with his wife Cheryl Hines. House speaker Mike

32
00:02:09.800 --> 00:02:13.520
Johnson was rushed out. Marco Rubio dove under his table

33
00:02:13.560 --> 00:02:15.680
at the front of the room. From one corner of

34
00:02:15.680 --> 00:02:19.120
the ballroom, a chant of God Bless America started up

35
00:02:19.159 --> 00:02:22.280
as the President was hustled toward an exit. The man

36
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:25.800
with the shotgun has a name, Cole Thomas Allen. He

37
00:02:25.879 --> 00:02:29.560
is thirty one years old. He is a teacher from Torrance, California,

38
00:02:29.879 --> 00:02:32.280
named teacher of the Month at the tutoring company where

39
00:02:32.319 --> 00:02:35.759
he worked just sixteen months ago. He is a cal

40
00:02:35.879 --> 00:02:39.879
Tech graduate with a master's degree in computer science. He

41
00:02:39.960 --> 00:02:44.240
has no criminal record. He has until Saturday night, never

42
00:02:44.280 --> 00:02:47.400
been on the radar of federal law enforcement. And he

43
00:02:47.560 --> 00:02:51.000
traveled across the entire country by train from Los Angeles

44
00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.520
to Chicago to Washington, checked into the same hotel where

45
00:02:54.520 --> 00:02:57.680
the dinner was being held, the same hotel where Ronald

46
00:02:57.680 --> 00:02:59.879
Reagan was shot in nineteen eighty one, by the way,

47
00:03:00.199 --> 00:03:03.000
and we are going to get to that, and then

48
00:03:03.159 --> 00:03:06.080
walk downstairs in a tuxedo of guns and tried to

49
00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:09.840
do what investigators say he intended to do, shoot people

50
00:03:09.879 --> 00:03:13.919
who work in the Trump administration. That is where we are.

51
00:03:14.879 --> 00:03:19.280
That is the night. The arraignment is happening today Monday

52
00:03:19.360 --> 00:03:23.400
in federal court in DC. The investigation is roughly thirty

53
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:26.319
six hours old as I'm sitting here recording this. There

54
00:03:26.439 --> 00:03:29.560
is a great deal we do not yet know. But

55
00:03:29.680 --> 00:03:31.599
here's what we do know, and we are going to

56
00:03:31.639 --> 00:03:34.639
walk through all of it. Who he is, what he did,

57
00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:38.120
What investigators are finding in his apartment, his hotel room,

58
00:03:38.199 --> 00:03:42.000
his computer, his writings, and what questions this whole thing

59
00:03:42.120 --> 00:03:45.120
leaves on the table about security at events the President

60
00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:47.280
of the United States is attending in the year twenty

61
00:03:47.319 --> 00:03:50.199
twenty six, when this is the third attempt on his

62
00:03:50.240 --> 00:03:57.759
life inside of two years. Stay with me. Let me

63
00:03:57.800 --> 00:04:01.319
set the scene properly, because the room itself, the White

64
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:04.280
House Correspondence Dinner, is the biggest night the Washington Press

65
00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:07.080
Corps throws all year, twenty six hundred people in a

66
00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:13.120
single ballroom, reporters, network anchors, cabinet officials, members of Congress, donors, celebrities,

67
00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:17.279
the President of the United States. Traditionally headlines. There is comedy,

68
00:04:17.519 --> 00:04:20.720
there is awards, there are speeches, And for the first

69
00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:24.079
time in his entire political career, Donald Trump was attending

70
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:27.680
as a sitting president. He had skipped the dinner all

71
00:04:27.720 --> 00:04:29.959
four years of his first term. He had agreed to

72
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:33.319
come this year, and the room was frankly tense before

73
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:36.759
anybody fired a shot. In the weeks leading up to Saturday,

74
00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:39.480
more than two hundred and fifty journalists had signed an

75
00:04:39.519 --> 00:04:42.759
open letter calling for what they described as a forceful

76
00:04:42.800 --> 00:04:46.360
pushback against Trump. At the event, huff Post had pulled

77
00:04:46.360 --> 00:04:51.360
out and boycotted entirely Jim Acosta had called for reporters

78
00:04:51.399 --> 00:04:54.879
to walk out. The mood inside the Washington Hillton on

79
00:04:54.920 --> 00:04:57.879
Saturday evening was already heavy with the politics of the

80
00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:02.079
night before anyone heard a noise. The entertainment had been booked.

81
00:05:02.720 --> 00:05:07.120
A mentalist named Oz Pearlman was set to perform waigiad

82
00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:10.360
Jiang of CBS News. The president of the White House

83
00:05:10.360 --> 00:05:14.800
Correspondence Association, had taken the stage to welcome everyone. Salad

84
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:18.360
plates were going down, Waiters were clearing them. The dinner

85
00:05:18.399 --> 00:05:21.720
had not even reached the entree. And here is the

86
00:05:21.759 --> 00:05:25.639
security detail that matters. Once the President was seated and

87
00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:28.639
the head table was locked in, no more guests were

88
00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:32.160
being admitted to the ballroom, which meant that Secret Service

89
00:05:32.199 --> 00:05:36.199
personnel had begun by protocol to take down the magnetometer

90
00:05:36.240 --> 00:05:40.600
screening area outside the ballroom doors. The metal detectors were

91
00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:44.839
being disassembled, The line was empty, The post was beginning

92
00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:49.199
its breakdown. That is the moment Cole Thomas Allen came

93
00:05:49.240 --> 00:05:51.680
down the stairs. He had been a guest at the

94
00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:55.199
Hilton since Friday. Investigators tell us his room was on

95
00:05:55.240 --> 00:05:58.160
the tenth floor. He had checked in the day before

96
00:05:58.199 --> 00:06:01.480
the dinner and on Saturday at eight thirty six pm.

97
00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:04.480
He came down to the lobby level wearing all black

98
00:06:04.519 --> 00:06:08.800
and carrying a shotgun openly in his hand. Surveillance video

99
00:06:08.839 --> 00:06:12.079
that the President himself later released on Truth Social shows

100
00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:16.600
what happens next. Alan sprints passed the checkpoint. Officers turn,

101
00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:20.399
they draw, He gets off shots. They get off shots.

102
00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:24.160
One Secret Service agent is hit in the chest, but

103
00:06:24.279 --> 00:06:28.279
the round buries into his bullet resistant vest. He stays standing.

104
00:06:28.600 --> 00:06:31.639
He stays in the fight. Alan is brought to the

105
00:06:31.639 --> 00:06:34.759
ground inside of seconds. He is not hit by gunfire.

106
00:06:35.160 --> 00:06:38.839
He is alive. He has taken into custody and removed

107
00:06:39.399 --> 00:06:42.480
inside the ballroom. The experience is different depending on where

108
00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:46.920
you were sitting. Olivia Rinaldi of CBS News, who had

109
00:06:46.920 --> 00:06:49.800
been at Butler, Pennsylvania when Trump was shot in twenty

110
00:06:49.839 --> 00:06:53.439
twenty four, was at the dinner Saturday. She told her

111
00:06:53.480 --> 00:06:56.720
network she heard what sounded like three to four successive shots.

112
00:06:57.560 --> 00:07:01.319
She said it originally sounded like plates falling, loud noises,

113
00:07:01.759 --> 00:07:05.680
but she had been at Butler, she knew that was gunfire.

114
00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:09.199
She could smell the gunpowder. The President himself, at the

115
00:07:09.240 --> 00:07:12.639
head table said something different. He said he heard a

116
00:07:12.680 --> 00:07:15.360
noise and thought it was a tray going down. He

117
00:07:15.399 --> 00:07:19.120
said it was Milania who recognized it first. He told

118
00:07:19.160 --> 00:07:23.000
reporters later, and I am paraphrasing him here, that Milania

119
00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:27.040
was very cognizant. He said she immediately knew it was

120
00:07:27.079 --> 00:07:30.480
a bad noise. He said it was a rather traumatic

121
00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:35.160
experience for her. Across the ballroom. Video captured the next

122
00:07:35.199 --> 00:07:40.000
ten seconds Cabinet members diving under tables, Marco Rubio under

123
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:43.399
his table, looking across at his wife, looking up at Trump,

124
00:07:43.480 --> 00:07:47.120
trying to figure out what was happening. Tactical agents jumping

125
00:07:47.160 --> 00:07:50.920
over chairs and tables, weapons drawn, sprinting toward the dais,

126
00:07:51.480 --> 00:07:54.920
the first lady ducking, the Vice President being walked off

127
00:07:54.920 --> 00:07:58.480
stage by an agent on each elbow, and then the

128
00:07:58.519 --> 00:08:02.759
rest of them, Ert F. Kennedy Junior and Cheryl Hines speaker,

129
00:08:02.759 --> 00:08:07.439
Mike Johnson, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott bessentt

130
00:08:07.720 --> 00:08:12.120
FBI Director Cash Pttel House Majority Leader Steve Scalise being

131
00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:15.519
moved out one by one, table by table as agents

132
00:08:15.560 --> 00:08:18.319
went and got them from one corner of the room.

133
00:08:18.439 --> 00:08:21.920
Somebody started a God bless America chant. The president was

134
00:08:21.959 --> 00:08:26.040
being walked off as it began. The dinner never resumed.

135
00:08:26.639 --> 00:08:30.720
They tried briefly Waiga. John got back on stage and

136
00:08:30.759 --> 00:08:34.759
announced the program would continue in a moment. By nine

137
00:08:34.759 --> 00:08:37.879
to twenty pm, the Secret Service was clearing the room.

138
00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:41.120
Dinner had not been served. The waiters had been picking

139
00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:44.360
up salad plates when the lockdown happened. The night was over.

140
00:08:44.919 --> 00:08:47.240
Jong told the room from the stage that the President

141
00:08:47.279 --> 00:08:50.679
had insisted the dinner be rescheduled within thirty days. The

142
00:08:50.799 --> 00:08:53.519
journalists in the room, and this is to their credit,

143
00:08:53.799 --> 00:08:56.200
we're already on the phone calling in copy as they

144
00:08:56.200 --> 00:08:59.639
were being walked out the door. Within an hour, Trump

145
00:08:59.720 --> 00:09:02.360
was at the White House briefing room. He was flanked

146
00:09:02.360 --> 00:09:07.080
by Vice President Vance Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, Secretary Hegseth,

147
00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:12.519
Secretary Rubio, FBI Director Patel, Acting Attorney General Todd blanche.

148
00:09:12.919 --> 00:09:16.639
He praised the Secret Service. He called the suspect a

149
00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:19.320
lone wolf and a sick person, and said, when asked

150
00:09:19.320 --> 00:09:22.200
if he believed he had been the target quote, when

151
00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:26.080
you're impactful, they go after you. When you're not impactful,

152
00:09:26.279 --> 00:09:30.039
they leave you alone. He also took the opportunity to

153
00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:33.519
point out that the Washington Hilton, in his words, was

154
00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:37.039
not a particularly secure building, and used that as an

155
00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:39.600
argument for the new ballroom he is having built at

156
00:09:39.639 --> 00:09:42.120
the White House to replace the East Wing. We are

157
00:09:42.120 --> 00:09:44.720
going to leave that one alone. Look, I'm going to

158
00:09:44.759 --> 00:09:48.320
be honest with you. There is something almost unbearably American

159
00:09:48.360 --> 00:09:50.200
about the fact that the Knight, the President of the

160
00:09:50.279 --> 00:09:53.000
United States, walks into a room full of journalists for

161
00:09:53.039 --> 00:09:56.360
the first time in his political career, at a dinner

162
00:09:56.399 --> 00:09:58.399
that is supposed to be about a free press, in

163
00:09:58.440 --> 00:10:01.279
the relationship between the people who govern and the people

164
00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:04.080
who cover them. That is the night a man with

165
00:10:04.120 --> 00:10:07.000
a shotgun comes through the door. We have lived through

166
00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:11.559
several iterations of this. Now Butler, Pennsylvania, July twenty twenty

167
00:10:11.559 --> 00:10:16.200
four Thomas Crooks on a rooftop who killed a spectator

168
00:10:16.279 --> 00:10:20.559
and put around through Trump's ear before Secret Service killed him.

169
00:10:20.759 --> 00:10:23.480
The golf course in West Palm Beach in September of

170
00:10:23.519 --> 00:10:26.120
that year, where Ryan Routh lay in the bushes with

171
00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:29.080
a rifle and was spotted by an agent before he

172
00:10:29.080 --> 00:10:33.440
could fire. Routh was convicted last year and sentenced to life.

173
00:10:33.480 --> 00:10:37.279
In February and now Saturday Night at the Washington Hilton,

174
00:10:37.600 --> 00:10:40.679
three three attempts in less than two years, and the

175
00:10:40.720 --> 00:10:43.120
people whose entire job it is to stop them have

176
00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:47.399
three times done exactly that. The Secret Service agent who

177
00:10:47.399 --> 00:10:49.519
took a round in his vest Saturday night gets to

178
00:10:49.559 --> 00:10:52.080
go home to his family because he was wearing the vest.

179
00:10:52.639 --> 00:10:55.879
That is not a small thing. That is the difference

180
00:10:55.879 --> 00:10:58.200
between a story I'm telling you on a Monday morning

181
00:10:58.279 --> 00:11:09.799
and a national tragedy. So who is Cole Thomas Allen.

182
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:13.879
He is thirty one years old. He is from Torrance, California,

183
00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:16.320
which is a coastal suburb in the South Bay region

184
00:11:16.360 --> 00:11:20.120
of Los Angeles, about twenty miles south of downtown LA.

185
00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:24.279
The mayor of Torrance, George Chen, issued a statement Saturday

186
00:11:24.320 --> 00:11:28.000
night condemning what happened and saying that one resident's alleged

187
00:11:28.039 --> 00:11:31.440
actions do not define the community. The city has about

188
00:11:31.440 --> 00:11:35.159
one hundred and forty three thousand residents. Allan had lived

189
00:11:35.159 --> 00:11:37.399
there most of his life since he was a teenager,

190
00:11:37.480 --> 00:11:39.519
with a stretch in San Gabriel for about a year

191
00:11:39.559 --> 00:11:43.120
and a half between twenty eighteen and twenty nineteen. He

192
00:11:43.360 --> 00:11:47.759
has four siblings, two sisters a brother. He had been

193
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:50.919
living with his parents at their house. FBI agents and

194
00:11:51.000 --> 00:11:54.279
tactical gear with armored vehicles surrounded that house Saturday night.

195
00:11:54.399 --> 00:11:57.919
While helicopter circled overhead. The neighbors stood out in the

196
00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:01.919
drizzle and watched. All describes himself on his LinkedIn profile

197
00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:06.639
this way quote a mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree,

198
00:12:07.159 --> 00:12:11.559
independent game developer by experience, teacher by birth. Let me

199
00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:14.559
walk you through that resume. He went to the California

200
00:12:14.600 --> 00:12:18.879
Institute of Technology Caltech, one of the most selective scientific

201
00:12:19.039 --> 00:12:22.720
universities in the country. He graduated in twenty seventeen with

202
00:12:22.799 --> 00:12:26.679
a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. While he was there,

203
00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:30.240
he was a member of two student organizations he listed publicly,

204
00:12:30.759 --> 00:12:35.759
the Caltech Christian Fellowship and the Caltech nerf Club that

205
00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:39.679
is on the record. He had an internship at NASA's

206
00:12:39.720 --> 00:12:43.480
Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He was featured in a local Los

207
00:12:43.519 --> 00:12:47.200
Angeles ABC News story his senior year for a senior project.

208
00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:51.159
He had developed a prototype emergency brake system for wheelchairs

209
00:12:51.159 --> 00:12:54.120
to help elderly users. He worked for a year as

210
00:12:54.120 --> 00:12:57.759
a mechanical engineer after graduation, then he became, in his

211
00:12:57.840 --> 00:13:02.000
own words, an independent video game developer. He published a

212
00:13:02.039 --> 00:13:05.519
game on the Steam platform in twenty eighteen, called Boredom

213
00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:11.279
bohr Dom. He registered the trademark in twenty eighteen. The

214
00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:14.320
game sales for one dollar and ninety nine cents. The

215
00:13:14.399 --> 00:13:17.039
description on Steam and I Am quoting it because it

216
00:13:17.080 --> 00:13:21.519
Matters calls it a skill based, nonviolent asymmetrical fighting game

217
00:13:21.639 --> 00:13:24.960
loosely derived from a chemistry model that is itself loosely

218
00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:28.559
based on reality. He told prospective buyers to think of

219
00:13:28.600 --> 00:13:30.720
it as a hybrid of a bullet hell and a

220
00:13:30.879 --> 00:13:35.240
racing game, with the inclusion of self propelled pinballs. He

221
00:13:35.320 --> 00:13:38.279
composed the music himself. He drew over seven hundred and

222
00:13:38.440 --> 00:13:41.879
fifty original graphics. He was working on a second game,

223
00:13:42.200 --> 00:13:46.000
working title First Law. In twenty twenty, he started picking

224
00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:49.240
up tutoring work at a company called C two Education.

225
00:13:50.120 --> 00:13:53.399
C two helps high school students prepare for the SAT

226
00:13:53.799 --> 00:13:57.440
and college admissions. He worked at the Torrents branch. He

227
00:13:57.480 --> 00:14:00.759
stayed there for about six years. In December of twenty

228
00:14:00.799 --> 00:14:04.120
twenty four, the company named him Teacher of the Month.

229
00:14:04.759 --> 00:14:08.399
They put a celebratory post up on Facebook congratulating him.

230
00:14:08.840 --> 00:14:11.679
While he was tutoring, he went back to school. He

231
00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:15.559
enrolled at California State University Dominguez Hills in twenty twenty

232
00:14:15.559 --> 00:14:18.960
two to pursue a master's degree in computer science. He

233
00:14:19.039 --> 00:14:22.480
graduated in May of twenty twenty five. The chair of

234
00:14:22.519 --> 00:14:25.600
the program, a professor named Bin Tang, talked to the

235
00:14:25.639 --> 00:14:29.519
Associated Press on Sunday. Professor Tang said Alan was a

236
00:14:29.720 --> 00:14:32.799
very good student, sat in the front row, paid attention,

237
00:14:33.240 --> 00:14:37.279
frequently emailed with course questions. The president of an organization

238
00:14:37.399 --> 00:14:42.080
called the Asian American Civic Trust, a man named Dylan Wakayama,

239
00:14:42.519 --> 00:14:45.480
told The Los Angeles Times that Alan had tutored high

240
00:14:45.480 --> 00:14:49.679
school students who were members of the organization. Wakayama said

241
00:14:49.720 --> 00:14:54.480
the students described Alan as very intelligent, proficient in biology,

242
00:14:54.799 --> 00:14:59.080
proficient in math. In October of twenty twenty four, Alan

243
00:14:59.159 --> 00:15:02.279
donated twenty five dollars to a Democratic Party political action

244
00:15:02.320 --> 00:15:06.759
committee supporting Kamala Harris's presidential campaign. That is on file

245
00:15:06.799 --> 00:15:09.879
with the Federal Election Commission. And here's the part of

246
00:15:09.919 --> 00:15:12.679
the resume that nobody at C two Education or cal

247
00:15:12.720 --> 00:15:16.279
State Domingas Hills or the Asian American Civic Trust knew about.

248
00:15:16.919 --> 00:15:20.120
In twenty twenty three, he bought a semi automatic pistol.

249
00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:23.440
In August of twenty twenty five, he bought the shotgun

250
00:15:23.480 --> 00:15:27.600
he allegedly used Saturday night. Both purchases were legal. He

251
00:15:27.639 --> 00:15:31.200
had no criminal record. He passed the background checks at

252
00:15:31.200 --> 00:15:34.240
some point in the past several months. Investigators are still

253
00:15:34.279 --> 00:15:37.840
working backwards on the timeline he made a decision. He

254
00:15:37.879 --> 00:15:40.240
bought a one way train ticket from Los Angeles to

255
00:15:40.320 --> 00:15:44.639
Chicago and from Chicago to Washington, DC. He took several

256
00:15:44.720 --> 00:15:47.159
days to make the cross country trip by rail. He

257
00:15:47.200 --> 00:15:50.679
did not fly. Whether that was because he intended to

258
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:53.320
bring the weapons with him and rail was easier, or

259
00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:56.000
whether it was for some other reason, I do not know.

260
00:15:57.200 --> 00:15:59.919
He arrived in Washington and checked into the Washington Hilton

261
00:15:59.919 --> 00:16:03.559
on Friday, the day before the Correspondent's dinner. He stayed

262
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:06.440
in a room on the tenth floor, and on Saturday night,

263
00:16:06.480 --> 00:16:09.879
at eight thirty six p m. Eastern, he came downstairs.

264
00:16:10.519 --> 00:16:13.679
This is a profile that law enforcement does not love.

265
00:16:14.399 --> 00:16:18.879
No criminal history, no flag behavior. A teacher, a tutor.

266
00:16:19.399 --> 00:16:22.200
People who knew him say he was intelligent, helped kids

267
00:16:22.200 --> 00:16:25.639
get into college, was active in his Christian fellowship in

268
00:16:25.759 --> 00:16:29.080
undergrad was building a video game in his spare time,

269
00:16:29.519 --> 00:16:32.440
the kind of person you do not see coming. And

270
00:16:32.600 --> 00:16:36.159
what investigators believe right now, and I want to stress

271
00:16:36.480 --> 00:16:40.120
this is preliminary. This is what Acting Attorney General Todd

272
00:16:40.159 --> 00:16:43.320
Blanche told Meet the Press on Sunday morning, is that

273
00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:47.159
he made the decision quietly somewhere in his apartment in

274
00:16:47.200 --> 00:16:50.679
Torrance to ride for several days across the country, check

275
00:16:50.720 --> 00:16:53.960
into the most expensive hotel in the immediate vicinity of

276
00:16:54.000 --> 00:16:58.080
the Washington Power structure, and walk downstairs with two firearms

277
00:16:58.080 --> 00:17:00.840
and several knives because he won wanted to shoot people

278
00:17:00.840 --> 00:17:04.720
who work in the Trump administration. Cole Allen had been

279
00:17:04.759 --> 00:17:08.079
thinking about this. The shotgun he allegedly used Saturday was

280
00:17:08.079 --> 00:17:11.839
purchased in August of last year. That is eight months

281
00:17:11.839 --> 00:17:15.400
of having that weapon. Whatever the writing's investigators are now

282
00:17:15.480 --> 00:17:19.160
reading on his electronic devices show and we will get

283
00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:22.039
to those after the break. This was not a man

284
00:17:22.079 --> 00:17:25.640
who snapped on Saturday afternoon. This was someone who was

285
00:17:25.680 --> 00:17:29.119
building towards something in his own head for a while.

286
00:17:40.799 --> 00:17:45.079
Here is what investigators are saying about motive. Acting Attorney

287
00:17:45.119 --> 00:17:47.880
General Todd Blanche went on Meet the Press Sunday morning.

288
00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:51.680
He laid out the preliminary theory quote, it does appear

289
00:17:51.720 --> 00:17:53.720
that he did, in fact, set out to target folks

290
00:17:53.720 --> 00:17:58.160
who work in the administration, likely including the President and quote.

291
00:17:58.640 --> 00:18:01.640
That conclusion is based on two things, according to Blanche.

292
00:18:02.079 --> 00:18:06.720
The first is what Allan has told investigators directly. CBS

293
00:18:06.720 --> 00:18:11.240
News is reporting, citing law enforcement sources, that Allan told

294
00:18:11.359 --> 00:18:15.480
investigators after his arrest that he wanted to shoot administration officials,

295
00:18:15.720 --> 00:18:18.319
but he did not specify whether he was targeting Trump

296
00:18:18.359 --> 00:18:22.079
in particular, or whether he was targeting any specific person.

297
00:18:23.200 --> 00:18:26.319
The second is what investigators are finding on his electronic

298
00:18:26.359 --> 00:18:29.519
devices in his hotel room on the tenth floor and

299
00:18:29.640 --> 00:18:32.839
at his parents' house in Torrance. They have his phone,

300
00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:36.359
they have his computer, They have what authorities are describing

301
00:18:36.440 --> 00:18:40.960
as writings. Blanche described social media activity that was, in

302
00:18:41.039 --> 00:18:44.319
his words, anti Trump in nature. He said the suspect

303
00:18:44.440 --> 00:18:47.799
is not cooperating fully. He said the firearms were purchased

304
00:18:47.799 --> 00:18:50.960
within the last couple of years. He said the investigation

305
00:18:51.240 --> 00:18:54.759
is his word fluid. The federal charges that have been

306
00:18:54.799 --> 00:18:57.839
filed so far two counts of using a firearm during

307
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:00.720
a crime of violence, one count of assault on a

308
00:19:00.720 --> 00:19:04.920
federal officer using a dangerous weapon. The US Attorney for

309
00:19:04.960 --> 00:19:08.480
the District of Columbia, Janeine Piro said Saturday night that

310
00:19:08.599 --> 00:19:12.119
more charges are expected. The assault count carries up to

311
00:19:12.200 --> 00:19:15.960
twenty years, the weapons counts carry a minimum of ten years,

312
00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:18.839
and if the firearms were discharged in a crime of violence,

313
00:19:19.079 --> 00:19:22.960
and they were, life is on the table. Allan is

314
00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:26.640
scheduled to be arraigned today Monday in federal court. Now

315
00:19:26.680 --> 00:19:29.200
I want to pull on the historical thread because the

316
00:19:29.279 --> 00:19:33.359
location of this attack is not incidental. The Washington Hilton

317
00:19:33.559 --> 00:19:36.680
is the same hotel where John Hinckley Junior shot President

318
00:19:36.759 --> 00:19:40.960
Ronald Reagan on March thirtieth, nineteen eighty one. Hinckley fired

319
00:19:41.079 --> 00:19:43.680
six shots that day from a sidewalk outside the same

320
00:19:43.720 --> 00:19:48.039
building Cole Allen entered Saturday night. Reagan was hit survived.

321
00:19:48.319 --> 00:19:50.960
Press Secretary James Brady was hit in the head and

322
00:19:51.079 --> 00:19:55.720
suffered permanent brain damage. Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy was hit.

323
00:19:56.039 --> 00:20:00.079
DC police officer Thomas Delahanty was hit. The Brady Bill

324
00:20:00.119 --> 00:20:03.640
is named after the Press secretary. The shooting changed federal

325
00:20:03.680 --> 00:20:06.880
firearms law in this country. It changed how the Secret

326
00:20:06.880 --> 00:20:10.519
Service does presidential movements. It is one of the defining

327
00:20:10.559 --> 00:20:14.319
political violence moments of the late twentieth century, and forty

328
00:20:14.359 --> 00:20:17.839
five years later, almost to the month, somebody walked into

329
00:20:17.880 --> 00:20:20.480
the same building with a shotgun looking for the president.

330
00:20:21.000 --> 00:20:23.559
That is not a coincidence. I can prove was deliberate

331
00:20:23.640 --> 00:20:27.279
on Cole Allen's part. The investigation has not made that

332
00:20:27.319 --> 00:20:31.680
connection publicly. But it is the same hotel, it is

333
00:20:31.720 --> 00:20:35.400
the same chain of events. It is by any measure,

334
00:20:35.640 --> 00:20:37.400
a building that ought to be near the top of

335
00:20:37.400 --> 00:20:40.079
the list when you are planning security for an event

336
00:20:40.119 --> 00:20:42.279
that is going to put the President of the United

337
00:20:42.359 --> 00:20:46.240
States and most of his cabinet in one room Saturday night,

338
00:20:46.279 --> 00:20:50.200
The Secret Service Director Sean Curran said the security plan worked.

339
00:20:50.720 --> 00:20:54.400
He said the multi layered protection performed exactly as designed.

340
00:20:54.799 --> 00:21:00.039
The interim DC Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll agreed. The

341
00:21:00.119 --> 00:21:03.799
Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn called Allan, in his words,

342
00:21:04.160 --> 00:21:07.359
a coward who attempted to create a national tragedy and

343
00:21:07.519 --> 00:21:11.279
was stopped at first contact. All of that is technically true.

344
00:21:11.440 --> 00:21:14.240
The shooter never reached the ballroom. The president was not hit,

345
00:21:14.440 --> 00:21:17.079
the cabinet was not hit, the Vice President was not hit,

346
00:21:17.240 --> 00:21:20.000
the journalists were not hit. The agent who took the

347
00:21:20.079 --> 00:21:22.880
round in the vest is going to recover. But the

348
00:21:22.920 --> 00:21:25.480
man who allegedly tried to do this got into the

349
00:21:25.519 --> 00:21:29.079
hotel a full day before the event. He got into

350
00:21:29.079 --> 00:21:32.160
a room on the tenth floor. He stayed there. He

351
00:21:32.200 --> 00:21:35.240
came down a stairwell with a shotgun openly in his hand.

352
00:21:35.680 --> 00:21:38.079
He got within feet of the door of the ballroom

353
00:21:38.079 --> 00:21:41.000
where the President of the United States was sitting before

354
00:21:41.039 --> 00:21:44.480
anybody stopped him. The metal detectors he ran past were

355
00:21:44.519 --> 00:21:48.160
already being disassembled because the screening period had concluded for

356
00:21:48.240 --> 00:21:51.519
the evening. There are going to be questions about that.

357
00:21:52.039 --> 00:21:55.759
There should be questions about that. The Secret Service is

358
00:21:55.799 --> 00:21:59.720
going to answer those questions internally and probably publicly, and

359
00:21:59.759 --> 00:22:06.119
they should look. I am going to be honest with you.

360
00:22:06.599 --> 00:22:09.359
There are things we do not know yet about Saturday night,

361
00:22:09.559 --> 00:22:12.440
and I am not going to pretend otherwise. We do

362
00:22:12.519 --> 00:22:15.119
not know exactly what is in the writings the FBI

363
00:22:15.279 --> 00:22:18.279
is reading on Cole Allen's laptop right now. We do

364
00:22:18.359 --> 00:22:20.920
not know whether he had a specific person in mind,

365
00:22:21.119 --> 00:22:23.319
or whether he was just going to shoot whoever he

366
00:22:23.359 --> 00:22:26.319
could see when the door opened. We do not know

367
00:22:26.359 --> 00:22:28.400
what he is going to plead at the arraignment in

368
00:22:28.440 --> 00:22:32.559
federal court today or what additional charges are coming, or

369
00:22:32.680 --> 00:22:36.200
whether he will start cooperating. There are reporters in this

370
00:22:36.240 --> 00:22:38.480
town doing their jobs right now to find that out,

371
00:22:38.799 --> 00:22:40.880
and we will tell you what they find when they

372
00:22:40.920 --> 00:22:44.079
find it. What I can tell you is this. A

373
00:22:44.119 --> 00:22:47.720
Secret Service agent went to work on Saturday night in Washington, DC,

374
00:22:48.359 --> 00:22:51.720
and at some point during dinner service, while the presidential

375
00:22:51.720 --> 00:22:54.559
motor kaide was outside and a ballroom of twenty six

376
00:22:54.680 --> 00:22:57.480
hundred guests was sitting down, that agent had to draw

377
00:22:57.519 --> 00:23:00.319
his weapon and engage a man with a shotgun about

378
00:23:00.319 --> 00:23:02.119
ten feet from the door of the room where the

379
00:23:02.119 --> 00:23:05.319
President of the United States was sitting. He took around

380
00:23:05.319 --> 00:23:07.759
to the vest. He is going to be okay because

381
00:23:07.799 --> 00:23:11.839
the vest worked. The man with the shotgun never reached

382
00:23:11.839 --> 00:23:15.319
the ballroom. The president never reached the floor, the Vice

383
00:23:15.400 --> 00:23:19.119
president never reached the floor, the cabinet never reached the floor.

384
00:23:19.559 --> 00:23:23.759
Twoy six hundred guests went home shaken but alive. Three

385
00:23:23.799 --> 00:23:26.680
times now in less than two years. The people whose

386
00:23:26.839 --> 00:23:29.200
entire professional life is making sure the President of the

387
00:23:29.279 --> 00:23:32.839
United States does not get shot have done exactly that

388
00:23:33.599 --> 00:23:36.759
against three different people in three different states, with three

389
00:23:36.759 --> 00:23:42.039
different weapons. Butler Pennsylvania, West Palm Beach, Florida, Washington, DC.

390
00:23:42.640 --> 00:23:45.400
The Secret Service is taking institutional hits for plenty of

391
00:23:45.480 --> 00:23:48.039
other things lately, and some of those hits are deserved.

392
00:23:48.319 --> 00:23:51.319
We're going to be honest about that. But Saturday night

393
00:23:51.559 --> 00:23:55.240
they did exactly what they exist to do. The agent

394
00:23:55.319 --> 00:23:58.319
in the vest gets to go home. The thing nobody

395
00:23:58.359 --> 00:24:01.160
at any of these dinners or rallied or golf courses

396
00:24:01.279 --> 00:24:04.240
or checkpoints should have to think about is whether this

397
00:24:04.319 --> 00:24:07.720
is the time the system fails. We are now in

398
00:24:07.759 --> 00:24:11.759
a period in this country where political violence, actual weapons,

399
00:24:11.839 --> 00:24:15.039
drawn gunfire exchange, political violence aimed at the most protected

400
00:24:15.119 --> 00:24:18.200
human being in the world is a regular feature of

401
00:24:18.319 --> 00:24:21.880
presidential life. That is not normal. That is not how

402
00:24:21.920 --> 00:24:24.640
this is supposed to work. And every time it happens,

403
00:24:24.680 --> 00:24:27.079
we say we are going to have a national conversation

404
00:24:27.119 --> 00:24:29.799
about it, and then a few news cycles go by,

405
00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:34.160
and the conversation ends, and then it happens again. There

406
00:24:34.319 --> 00:24:37.200
is a playbook for this, and the playbook ends with

407
00:24:37.279 --> 00:24:40.480
a teacher named Cole Allen, a man who tutored kids

408
00:24:40.480 --> 00:24:43.799
on weekends, who composed the soundtrack to his own video game,

409
00:24:44.200 --> 00:24:47.319
sitting in a federal holding cell tonight while investigators read

410
00:24:47.359 --> 00:24:50.640
his journal. Tomorrow we will be back to the regular schedule.

411
00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:53.680
The trials are still moving, the cases we follow on

412
00:24:53.720 --> 00:24:57.079
this show are still happening. Tuesday show is going to

413
00:24:57.119 --> 00:24:59.799
be the one I had built for today. I'm gar

414
00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:03.720
at Fischer. This was Daily Crime and Justice. Take care

415
00:25:03.759 --> 00:25:09.480
of yourselves. Disclaimer. The information in this episode reflects what

416
00:25:09.640 --> 00:25:13.039
was publicly available as of recording on Sunday afternoon, April

417
00:25:13.039 --> 00:25:16.599
twenty six, twenty twenty six. Cole Thomas Allen has been

418
00:25:16.680 --> 00:25:20.720
charged but not convicted. He has presumed innocent unless and

419
00:25:21.079 --> 00:25:24.960
until proven guilty in a court of law. The motive

420
00:25:25.000 --> 00:25:28.799
described in this episode that the suspect was targeting members

421
00:25:28.799 --> 00:25:32.759
of the Trump administration was characterized by Acting Attorney General

422
00:25:32.799 --> 00:25:38.200
Todd Blanche's preliminary and the investigation is ongoing. Some early

423
00:25:38.279 --> 00:25:43.160
reporting attributed additional ideological characterizations to authorities that we were

424
00:25:43.200 --> 00:25:46.839
not able to corroborate from multiple major outlets, and we

425
00:25:46.920 --> 00:25:51.079
have not repeated those characterizations on air. Allen's arraignment was

426
00:25:51.079 --> 00:25:54.200
scheduled for the day this episode aired, and any plea

427
00:25:54.480 --> 00:25:58.920
additional charges or new disclosures from federal prosecutors that occurred

428
00:25:58.960 --> 00:26:03.000
between recording and airtime will be addressed in subsequent episodes.

429
