03 Caalarogus Shark Media. Good morning, I'm Reed Carter, Monday, January twelfth, twenty twenty six. Taking a break from courtrooms today. The celebrities were busy this weekend, and not in a good way. TMZ dropped a documentary Friday night that changes everything we thought we knew about the Nick Reiner case. Remember Rob Reiner's son charged with murdering both his parents last year. TMZ's investigation reveals Nick was stable on his medication for schizo effective disorder until doctors made a baffling decision to change his meds one month before the killings. Sources say Nick had a complete break from reality. Now he's in jail, believing he's the victim of a conspiracy. His defense team may argue the doctors not Nick created a killer. Timothy Bussfield, you know him from The West Wing Field of Dreams, thirty something Emmy winner, sixty eight years old, married to Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert. An arrest warrant has been issued in New Mexico for allegedly sexually abusing child actors on the set of The Cleaning Lady told the kids to call him Uncle Tim the alleged abuse occurred over eighteen months. At least one child has been diagnosed with PTSD. Daniel Stern Marv from Home Alone The Wet Bandit himself cited in December for allegedly soliciting prostitution at a hotel in Camarillo, California, Christmas season while

34 his movies are doing big streaming numbers. Guess he didn't want to be Home Alone. And Matt procop former Disney Channel Starr High School Musical three once had a restraining order against him for allegedly abusing Sarah Hyland from Modern Family arrested Christmas Eve in Texas on child pornography charges, currently being held without bail. I'm reed, Carter. Today, when celebrities allegedly become predators and when doctors allegedly create killers, this is celebrity trials. Let's start with the story that has the biggest implications for how we understand celebrity crime.

14 Nick Reiner, son of legendary director and actor Rob Reiner, the man who gave us when Harry met Sally the Princess Bride, A few good men stand by me and Michelle Reiner, Rob's wife of nearly three decades philanthropist mother. By all accounts, devoted parents who tried everything to help their troubled son. Last year, Nick Reiner allegedly killed them both. We covered the case when it broke the horror of a son murdering his parents the call is coming from inside the house, nightmare that every parent secretly fears. But TMZ's new documentary TMZ investigates the Reiner murders. What Really Happened aired Friday night, and it reveals details that may fundamentally change this case. Here's what we learned. Nick Reiner was diagnosed around twenty twenty with schizo effective disorder. For those unfamiliar, it's a severe mental illness that combines schizophrenia symptoms, delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, with mood disorder symptoms like mania and severe depression.

19 It's brutal, it's terrifying, and it requires careful medication management. According to TMZ's sources, one month before the murders, Nick was stable, His meds were working. He was functional, whatever functional means for someone with schizo effective disorder. Then, for reasons that remain unclear, his doctors decided to change his medication. TMZ's sources wouldn't say why, only that we would be shocked to learn the reason, and that it makes no sense. Think about that a patient is stable, the medication is working, and doctors decide to change it anyway. Why what possible justification could there be for destabilizing someone with a severe mental illness. The results were catastrophic. Sources say Nick went into a spiral after the medication change, became agitated, erratic, increasingly dangerous. Rob and Michelle Reiner saw it happening. Were alarmed at what they were witnessing in their son. But what could they do. He was an adult, he had rights.

25 They couldn't force him into treatment. Here's where the system failed. According to TMZ, doctors did not attempt to place Nick under a psychiatric hold while they tried to adjust the meds and stabilize him. In California, a fifty one to fifty hold allows medical professionals to detain someone for up to seventy two hours if they're a danger to themselves or others. Nick was clearly becoming dangerous. His parents saw it, his doctors should have seen it, but nobody acted. Doctor Drew Pinsky appeared on TEA Live Thursday and explained the problem. California makes it extremely difficult for doctors to get patients on psychiatric holds. The legal hurdles are significant, the liability concerns are real, and so patients who should be detained for their own safety and the safety of others are left to spiral. By the time of the murders, TMZ sources say Nick had a complete break from reality. Whatever was left of the stable medicated Nick was gone. In his place was someone who, according to insanity defense standards, may not have understood the nature and quality of his actions.

37 And here's the twist that makes this even more disturbing. Nick Reiner, sitting in jail right now, allegedly believes he's the victim of a conspiracy. The people who put him behind bars engaged in a plot against him. The delusions haven't stopped. The medication, we're told, is still not working properly. This isn't just a murder case anymore. This is a case about what happens when the medical system fails a mentally ill person and his family pays with their lives. Nick's defense team was reportedly proceeding down a path of pleading not guilty by reason of insanity under California law, that doesn't require proving he didn't know the difference between right and wrong. The key question is whether he understood the character and quality of his actions. Even if the murders were premeditated. Even if Nick planned what he did, a jury could still find him not guilty by reason of insanity if the medication change created a mental state where he couldn't comprehend what he was actually doing. The defense rights itself. Doctors destabilized a mentally ill man, failed to hospitalize him when he became dangerous. His parents died as a result. Nick Reiner isn't a murderer. He's the final victim of catastrophic medical malpractice. Now, I want to be clear, none of this excuse is what happened to Rob and Michelle Reiner. They're still dead, their family is still destroyed, and whatever Nick's mental state was, two people who loved him are gone forever. But if TMZ's reporting is accurate, the question of who bears responsibility for their

10 deaths just got a lot more complicated. Rob Reiner was seventy eight years old, director, actor, activist. Father should be in a cutting room somewhere working on his next project. Should be having dinner with his wife. Should be alive Michelle Reiner was seventy three years old. Philanthropist mother, grandmother, should be spoiling grandchildren, should be planning charity events. Should be alive. Instead, they're dead and the son they tried to save, the son they couldn't reach. Sits in a jail cell, believing the whole world is conspiring against him. The call came from inside the house, but maybe the real failure started in a doctor's office. We'll be right back with the West Wing star accused of sexually abuse children on a TV set and the uncle Tim nickname that makes this story even more disturbing. Welcome back to Celebrity Trials. I'm Reed Carter Timothy Bussfield sixty eight years old, Emmy Award winner for thirty Something. You've seen him in Everything, The West Wing, Field of Dreams, Revenge of the Nerds, dozens of TV shows and movies over four decades. He's also a prolific director, working behind the camera on shows like The Cleaning Lady for Fox. He's been married to

41 Melissa Gilbert Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie since twenty thirteen. She was president of the Screen Actors Guild ran for Congress, posted on social media last April, calling their twelve year marriage perfect perfect. An arrest warrant has now been issued for Timothy Busfield in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The charges two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor one count of child abuse. Let me walk you through what allegedly happened. According to the criminal complaint and arrest affidavit first reported by k TLA November twenty twenty four, staff at the University of New Mexico Hospital called police reported concerns that children were being groomed on the set of The Cleaning Lady, which Busfield directed.

33 An officer spoke with the parents of two child actors on the show. According to the criminal complaint, Busfield allegedly grew closer to the boys during their time on set, told them to call him Uncle Tim. Uncle Tim. You know what takes a special kind of predator making children feel comfortable enough to use a family nickname while allegedly planning to abuse them. The complaint says Busfield would tickle them on the stomach and legs, despite them not liking the tickling. Classic grooming behavior, testing boundaries, normalizing physical contact, seeing how much he could get away with. At that point November twenty twenty four, the children did not allege sexual touching, but the red flags were there, the inappropriate closeness, the unwonted physical contact, the Uncle tim routine. Then October twenty twenty five, nearly a year later, one of the parents reported to Child Protective Services that her child had disclosed alleged sexual abuse by Busfield. The child told a therapist that Busfield touched his genitalia and bottom while in a bedroom on the set of the TV show, a bedroom on set where Busfield had power, where he was the director, where everyone deferred to him because he's the Emmy winner, the TV legend, the guy who's been in the business for forty years. According to the affidavit, the alleged abuse occurred between November twenty twenty two and Spring twenty twenty four, eighteen months, eighteen months of access to

07 child actors, eighteen months of Uncle tim. When officers interviewed Busfield, he allegedly admitted to having playful contact with the children on his set, but denied any wrongdoing. Then came the classic abuser deflection. He allegedly suggested the allegations were due to the parents wanting revenge on him after their children were not asked back for the show's final season revenge. The kids weren't invited back to the show, so their parents made up sexual abuse allegations. That's his defense. Here's the problem with that theory. At least one of the children in the case has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder following the alleged abuse. Kids don't develop PTSD from playful tickling. Kids develop PTSD from trauma. A warrant has been issued for Busfield's arrest in Bernalio County, New Mexico.

59 As of now, no court or jail records indicate he's been taken into custody. He did not respond to media requests for comment. His wife, Melissa Gilbert, has not publicly addressed the allegations. Remember her April twenty twenty five anniversary post twelve years of true partnership, love, laughter, compassion, commitment, she told People magazine their relationship was the easiest she'd ever been in. There is rarely drama, and if there is drama, it's not caused by us. It comes from outside. Well, drama from outside just arrived. I'm not going to speculate about what Melissa Gilbert knew or didn't know. Spouses often have no idea. Predators are skilled at compartmentalizing. The man you see at home isn't the man he is when he has access to vulnerable children. But I will say this, if these allegations are true, Timothy Bussfield used his position as a respected Hollywood director to allegedly abuse children who were on his head set, under his supervision, in a professional environment where he held all the power, and he told them to call him Uncle Tim while he did it.

08 The charges are allegations. Busfield is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the details in this complaint are specific. They're disturbing, and they follow a pattern we've seen over and over in Hollywood, powerful men using their positions to allegedly pray on the vulnerable. We'll follow this case as it develops. Two more celebrity legal stories from the weekend, and they couldn't be more different. In tone. Daniel Stern sixty eight years old. You know him as mar from the Home Alone movies, The Tall One, the Wet Bandit, the guy who got blow torched paint canned and tarantula by Macaulay Culkin.

56 Apparently he didn't want to be home alone this Christmas. Law enforcement in Ventura County, California confirms that Daniel Stern was sited on December tenth for soliciting prostitution, right in the middle of the holiday season, right when his home alone movies are doing their annual big streaming numbers. According to police documents obtained by TMZ, Stern was sited at a hotel in Camarillo, California, about an hour northwest of Los Angeles. No mugshot. He wasn't booked, just given a ticket, because apparently soliciting prostitution in California gets you the same treatment as a parking violation if you're famous enough. This isn't Stern's first incident in Ventura County. Recently, back in October, he was rushed to the hospital after the Ventura County Fire Department responded to a medical emergency at a residence in Somus. Details of that incident weren't disclosed. TMZ reached out to Stern's representatives no comment. Look, I'm not going to pile on too hard here. Soliciting prostitution is illegal Stern allegedly broke the law. He got cited. He'll deal with the consequences, presumably a fine and some embarrassment, But the jokes right themselves. The Wet Bandit indeed trying to take the Sticky Bandit nickname two literally. Marv finally found a trap he walked into willingly, moving on to something much darker. Matt Procop. If you're over thirty, you might

27 not know him, but if you were a Disney Channel kid in the two thousands, you remember. He played Jimmy Zara in High School Musical three, had appearances on the Office and Hannah Montana classic Disney trajectory. He's also the ex boyfriend of Sarah Hyland from Modern Family and when I say X, I mean Sarah obtained a restraining order against him in twenty fourteen, claiming he was verbally and physically abusive. A judge ordered him to stay away from her for three years. That's the background. Christmas Eve, twenty twenty five, Matt Procop was arrested in Victoria County, Texas, his hometown, on multiple charges, including alleged possession of child pornography and resisting arrest. He's currently being held without bail.

13 According to local news outlet Crossroads, Today, Procop was arrested for allegedly violating bond conditions from a previous set of charges filed in twenty twenty four. We reported on that arrest. Last May, Procop was charged with aggravated assault, family and resisting arrest after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. So let's track the pattern. Restraining order for alleged domestic abuse against Sarah Hyland, arrested for allegedly assaulting a different girlfriend in twenty twenty four, released on bond, Now arrested again for allegedly violating that bond with child pornography charges added. This is what we mean when we talk about red flags, when we talk about warning signs, when we talk about patterns of behavior that should have been addressed years ago. The allegations against pro Cop started surfacing a decade ago. Sarah Hyland was brave enough to seek a restraining order. She told the world what she'd allegedly experienced, and then what he kept getting.

13 Chances kept finding new victims, allegedly kept escalating. Now he's in a Texas jail on Christmas facing child pornography charges. The system doesn't learn the system doesn't protect the system waits until the damage is catastrophic before finally taking action. Matt Procop is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the trajectory here is damning, and Sarah Hyland, wherever she is today, probably feels vindicated and probably wishes someone had listened sooner. That's Celebrity Trials for Monday, January twelfth, twenty twenty six. Nick Reiner's doctors allegedly changed his medication one month before he killed his parents. TMZ's documentary raises serious quest questions about whether medical malpractice created a killer. His insanity defense may be built around that decision. Timothy Busfield, West Wing star and Emmy winner, has an arrest warrant for allegedly sexually abusing child actors on The Cleaning Lady told them to call him uncle. Tim Daniel Stern, the Wet Bandit from Home Alone, was cited for allegedly soliciting prostitution at a California hotel, and former Disney star Matt Procop is being held without bail on child pornography charges after allegedly violating bond from a previous assault arrest. Trial updates resumed tomorrow Brian Walsh, closing arguments continue, Uvalde testimony ongoing, and courts are open for business. I'm Red Carter. Watch who

46 you trust, even the people on your TV. This is celebrity trials.
