When Gabe Brown saw firsthand how regenerative agriculture significantly transformed their family farm, he committed himself to spreading the word about the importance of taking care of the soil. In this conversation with Corinna Bellizzi, he breaks down his work as one of the pioneers of the current soil health movement that eliminates the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides. Gabe explores the six principles of soil health, the four ecosystem processes, and the importance of local food sourcing. He also emphasizes the need to educate companies, the youth, and the public about the dangers of modernized farming techniques and why regenerative farming is the key to unlocking a more sustainable tomorrow.
About Guest:
Gabe Brown is one of the pioneers of the current soil health movement, which focuses on the regeneration of natural resources. Gabe, along with his wife, Shelly, founded Brown's Ranch, a diversified 6,000-acre farm and ranch near Bismarck, North Dakota. The ranch consists of several thousand acres of native perennial rangeland, along with perennial pastureland and cropland. Their ranch focuses on farming and ranching in nature's image. The Browns holistically integrate their grazing and no-till cropping systems, which include a wide variety of cash crops, multi-species cover crops, along with all-natural grass finished meats. This diversity and integration have regenerated the natural resources on the ranch without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides. Over 2,000 people visit the Brown's Ranch annually to see this unique operation. They have had visitors from all fifty states and thirty-seven foreign countries. Gabe and his ranch have received many forms of recognition for their work, including the prestigious Heinz Award for the Environment, the Growing Green award from the Natural Resource Defense Council, an Environmental Stewardship Award from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, and the Zero-Till Producer of the Year Award, to name a few. Gabe has also been named one of the twenty-five most influential agricultural leaders in the United States and has been inducted into the North Dakota Agricultural Hall of Fame. Gabe authored the bestselling book, “Dirt to Soil, One Family’s Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture.” They have now transitioned ownership of the ranch over to their son, Paul and his wife, Jazmin. Gabe is a partner and Board Member at Regenified and serves as the public face of the company. He is a founding partner in Understanding Ag, LLC and a founder and instructor for the Non-Profit Soil Health Academy, which focuses on teaching others the power and importance of healthy functioning ecosystems.
