#2 Why It Makes Sense to Have a Side Hustle
In this episode of Business Building Tips, Roy Coughlan is joined again by Anil Ramcharitar to talk about why it makes sense to have a side hustle. Roy describes the time he had all his eggs in one basket and the basket fell. Anil explains why he never liked having a job and how he learned to build a business alongside it. Both share their experiences of working for others, from early paper rounds to long hours and refused holidays, and how being in control of their own time let them look after family. They discuss the rising cost of living, the chance that AI will change many jobs, moving from a job mindset to an entrepreneur mindset, and what to do when a partner is not supportive. They also cover how to choose a mentor and why it helps to work with a company that has heart. Anil finishes with his advice not to quit your job overnight and to build up savings before you leave. This episode is general discussion and not financial advice.

Why it Makes Sense to have a Side Hussle
[Speaker 2] (0:03 - 0:24)
Welcome to another episode of business building tips and I'm joined again by good friend and mentor Anil and Anil has built a lot of companies and made a lot of multi-millionaires and it's an honor having him on the show and doing this weekly so welcome Anil.
[Speaker 1] (0:26 - 0:30)
Thank you Roy, I really appreciate being on your podcast.
[Speaker 2] (0:30 - 0:53)
So we're going to talk today about why it makes sense having a business side hustle and I think it's an important one because I suppose I'll start by saying one time I had all my eggs in one basket and the basket fell and it was a hard time to go through and I think having a few things definitely helps and I know you know a lot about that.
[Speaker 1] (0:54 - 2:30)
Well I mean I don't come from business, I grew up very poor in the Caribbean and when I migrated to Canada I noticed a lot of things going on I never saw before as a teenager because I went to Canada when I was 18 and one of the things was becoming an entrepreneur and business owner and here's the thing Roy, even when I was an employee as a teen because I started working when I was around 14 to support the family, I hated having a job. I hated working for someone, someone telling me when I could go use the bathroom, have lunch, when I could go home.
I really hated someone controlling my time and also telling me what I was worth so I really learned how to become an entrepreneur and a business owner and having a side hustle and when I really understood the dynamics of that it made total sense for me to make whatever business I was in work and so anyone listening to this today who has a job, I can teach you how to have a side hustle a few hours a week and I can show you how to double, triple and quadruple your current income at your job and over the next few months you can have another income coming in which gives you the option to eventually walk away from that job if you wanted to have your freedom and work from home and do whatever you want and spend time with the family and travel the world and I've been able to teach thousands of people since the 1980s how to do that very very successfully and some have gone on to become multi-millionaires and start their own companies and build massive massive businesses from those simple little things I taught them.
[Speaker 2] (2:31 - 3:59)
I mean I was doing stuff at a young age as well with newspapers and the thing is I'm watching all my friends going to the swimming pool and I had to be there at a certain time, hail, rain, snow, I was going around doing it and it was just but when I started working for two companies it was like asking for holidays and then they denying it or then there was times we were doing like because we were working for mechanical contracting company it was like Christmas shutdowns so you were working over Christmas because I was like overseeing the whole lot and yeah was I getting paid well yes but it was that's not the life that I wanted and it was I could just see everybody was pawns and I even saw as well that like there was a guy that he was promoted and sometimes what they do is they promote the best like say pipe or charge hand into a foreman and it's not necessarily they're going to be the best guy and they'd get people running a few jobs and then they'd burn out and one guy got a breakdown and it was like really concern about this and no I stayed in contact when he came back then I was training they wouldn't let me hire him and he just wanted to go on the tools and I just taught a lot of companies they just treat people like you do what we say and they don't care about your heart or anything like that so when you're looking after your own life like when my grandmother got very ill I was able to go over to Ireland for over a month and spend time next to her bed if I was working for somebody there's no way I'd be allowed to do that so even caring for
[Speaker 1] (3:59 - 6:32)
loved ones it really helps right and I mean look at when you really look at the history of where jobs came from before the industrial revolution you know before the 1930s or whatever most people were farmers and the industrial revolution hit we know what happened and the job industry exploded and when you really look at it why why do people have jobs well the government wants you to have a job so you can pay taxes so jobs are really for the government's benefit not for ours because how many people can really pay their bills with the job incomes they have with what's going on with inflation and the high cost of living most people are living paycheck to paycheck mom and dad have one on two jobs even the kids are working part-time to carry on the household that's that's insane families don't even get to spend time together here's a couple other things to consider AI AI is going to replace a lot of jobs they're going to replace a lot of jobs so so what are you doing to have a side hustle just in case that good job disappears overnight what do you have also sometimes roar I talk to my friends and they're they're always bitching and complaining about where they live and oh I hate winter and I wish I was somewhere warm and my conversation with them is well learn an online business so you can go spend winters somewhere warm and work work from your home and may still make money online right so it's all about Roy's about having the options to know you know what I'm I'm not stuck at this job if I don't like my boss if I don't like my co-workers if I don't like traffic I don't like shoveling snow in the morning to get to work I rather spend time at home with my significant other and my kids that option is available to you you just have to take the time to educate yourself on on what's possible and what I do Roy's I love teaching people how to transition with their mindset with their mindset from having a job mindset to an entrepreneur mindset because there is a mindset that you will need to develop however keep your job keep working your job but let's help you transition into something as an entrepreneur as a business owner and I can I can help anyone anywhere in the world to do that right I mean like my main business
[Speaker 2] (6:32 - 6:45)
before was real estate but now everything is on the computer so if I decide to go to Trinidad and Tobago or I go to Estonia everything still works away because I've set it up that way brilliant
[Speaker 1] (6:45 - 7:41)
brilliant and let me ask you a question did you have to learn that or did you know that automatically I have to learn it all you have to learn so you you too listening to this podcast can learn it as well you just have to I'll say this you have to get to the sick and tired point in your life where you cannot live another day with how things are you have to get to that breaking point the pain in your life has to be so turned up that you will do something about it until it gets to that point you won't you'll just wake up in the morning do your routine go to work come back repeat it the next day for 40 years and nothing will shift you have to get to that point so so figure it out figure out what pisses you off about your lifestyle right now that you're willing to do something about it and let's have a conversation and like a lot of businesses say
[Speaker 2] (7:42 - 8:17)
you know it took me a while to figure out I mean I was able to monetize things but to get it really good it took years to figure it out there's a lot of people kind of trying to get you involved in a different side hustle but one that I've recently got involved because of thanks to you in three weeks I've made three thousand and like some people don't make that in a month and this is just my little side hustle with along with the other things and it just shows how easy it is to do when you find the right side hustle yeah and the only reason that's working for you
[Speaker 1] (8:17 - 9:30)
is because you took the time to transition from a job mentality to an entrepreneur's mentality and it's like it's like riding a bike or swimming once you learn it and you master it you you learn it forever it's there so anything you step into you're going to do very well at because you've trained your mind to think along those lines and your programming let's say that your programming is so fine-tuned that you can step into the next thing and the next thing and the next thing and you'll do very well at it because you've taken the time to master certain skill sets and understanding certain fundamentals and the intricacies of being an entrepreneur because it's not easy it's not easy however it's worth it and you you have to want it bad enough to do to do something about it which you have done so I'm not shocked Rory that you're doing very well with your current side hustle because you become that person and anyone listening to this as well you can become that person as well because Rory and I if you take our birth certificate our birth certificate is not written entrepreneur it's not we have to become those people and you
[Speaker 2] (9:30 - 10:01)
can too well I'm going to get some tipics now and actually write that into my one so yeah yeah yeah exactly and because you're you're very good at kind of understanding people the psychology and everything and if we look at a couple because sometimes one person wants to do it and then the other person is like oh no no no and they're kind of holding them back and I see that a lot in relationships it's like somebody is kind of whipping them and saying why don't you do better but once they try to do it they're pulling them back right how do you navigate that one
[Speaker 1] (10:02 - 11:54)
it's very simple to my male friends I say I thought you wore the pants in the relationship so I have fun with them and to my female friends and relationships I'm like good take charge step up own your power so my suggestion to people like that is okay so your spouse doesn't support you go do it anyways you're doing it for the betterment of the family just respect the dynamics of the relationship I mean if you have date night honor date night if you have family time honor family time if you are planning a road trip honor the road trip so figure out how to to fit in your entrepreneurial life and your job life into everything else I mean look at Roy you know this from from experience an entrepreneur doesn't work 40 50 60 hours a week I can teach someone how to work two three hours a week and generate what most people work full time generate and I've done it thousands of times so your side hustle doesn't have to be a full-time hustle it could be a part-time spare time hustle as long as you do the right things and as long as you're teachable and coachable so I'm always looking for teachable and coachable people that are like you know what I know I'm ready teach me show me what to do and it's like it's like those footprints in the sand you walk behind me and you step in my footsteps and you'll be fine so don't worry about your spouse not being supportive or whatever they're human beings they're not you so respect that just honor your agreements and your commitments to them don't break it because you're becoming an entrepreneur that's don't do that become an entrepreneur and learn how to do that spark spare time part-time I think another one is
[Speaker 2] (11:54 - 12:11)
when you're getting involved with some companies if it's your side hustle kind of know the person as well that if they've got heart centered as opposed to they don't care about you because it's nice when somebody kind of just kind of guides you along as well because not everybody
[Speaker 1] (12:11 - 14:28)
does that and it's nice so yeah good yeah mentorship is very good so one thing I've done over the years and I've done this for 30 something years is I find the number one person in any gig I'm doing the number one realtor the number one financial planner the number one network marketer the number one affiliate marketer I go and I search them out and I hire them I hire them to teach me because I don't want to waste time figuring it out if I'm going to go to the gym I would rather Arnold Schwarzenegger mentor me than my broke brother-in-law right so I go look for the Arnold Schwarzenegger in the community or if I'm going to play tennis because I come from coaching and playing tennis I'll go find the Venus Williams or Serena Williams or Agassi or Sampras or Nadal in my community at the tennis club and I go hey buddy do you mind if I hang out with you and learn from you and I've done that lots of times and people go sure come learn from me and if they want a few dollars I'll get them a few dollars for their time so it's important Rory to find the top person in that industry or that platform you want to participate in and go you know I say shove yourself under their wing and learn from them and the cool thing about technology right now is a lot of people have their videos up on YouTube so you can go watch if I want to play good tennis I go watch Nadal's instructions I go watch Federer they're all all their training videos are on YouTube so another thing I want to say to those listening here is don't be mentally lazy don't be mentally lazy put in the time and effort in whatever you want to become good at and go and figure it out don't don't wait on me don't wait on Roy don't wait on anybody go figure it out you know many things I've figured out on my own and became a master at it and people thought I have a degree or I went to some did you go to Yale or did you go to Harvard or Oxford no I went to the school of hard knocks that's the school I went to I went to the school of in on being on the streets and being in the trenches so my suggestion to anybody listening to this is go figure it out don't wait on anybody you can go on YouTube and learn anything
[Speaker 2] (14:28 - 14:56)
you want anything anything anything just because you mentioned about the AI it's something I've covered in my other show like there's so many people that are like truck drivers couriers and things like that they're all going to be gone I'm seeing trucks that are driving along even in the warehouses now they've all the machines so they are going we don't need holiday pay we don't need this so I think now more than ever having a side hustle because it gets the bills the food on the
[Speaker 1] (14:56 - 17:01)
table and the family together yeah and and here's what I'll say in conclusion to this topic build your side hustle so it matches your job income so if you're making 10 grand a month at your job let your side hustle be 10 grand a month bank the 10 grand a month for six months of the side hustle so you have 60k put away then quit your job and here's why becoming an entrepreneur there's a learning curve and you're going to have to master certain skills and habits because remember you have a job mentality it's a different mentality for an entrepreneur so you give yourself time for that learning curve so when you quit your job you have 60k say in your bank account well you got six months now to really really become proficient at what you're doing well you got 60k to live off if the process is slow so do not quit your job cold turkey and go become an entrepreneur do not do that do not do that especially if you have a family and children and you got bills and you got to put food on the table bank six months of income now you can consider walking away from a job in fact if hang on to your job as for as long as you can maybe bank a year's income two years income then you can walk away because then now you're not stressing you have a buffer and you can focus on being successful as an entrepreneur and you're not wondering oh my god i gotta pay rent this month i gotta pay the mortgage i got car payment medical bills i gotta pay for the kids schooling and the wife is looking at me sideways yeah don't do that to yourself becoming an entrepreneur be smart make smart moves and make calculated moves and don't be emotional about your decisions be very logical and practical and you know if you want to reach out to me through through roy i'll be more than happy to um to mentor you and teach you what to do so i just wanted to say that for you no excellent yeah i'm sure we'll have all the links in the show notes but i look forward to our next episode thank you in the end you're welcome anytime
