I’m working with a phenomenal speaking coach named Gahmya on an upcoming talk and she gave me my first exercise today...to identify a word that represents me. #day1 #likeTED #speaking
There is a list of three prompts she shared that I could use.
One of them starts out, “The word that speaks to me this year is …”
And she wrote that we should take a couple minutes to think about it and to share. So I wanted to share it with you.
You might think about this question, too, and ask yourself what your word is.
I found how I want to end that sentence.
The word that speaks to me this year is …NOW.
I believe there are times in life when we must wait.
I saw this in action when my dad would take us fishing. We couldn’t get bored, look at the water, point at it saying “now” and a fish would jump onto the hook. We put ourselves in the best position, made sure we were prepared, and when the time was right, we reeled them in.
I feel like a lot of my life has been moments of making big jumps, but mostly a lot of waiting.
This is not one of those times.
The word that speaks to me this year is “now” – because of so many reasons, but mostly because my internal clock tells me it is time. I feel it all through me with as much conviction as one could have.
What “now” means is that there are no excuses waiting for me this year. This is the year to jump into making the things happen that I say I want to do. One could say that every year is like that and that may be true.
But right now I’m in the water, prepped, I’ve gotten myself into the spot that gets all the good fish...the spot that you can only get to with lots of experience, patience, and luck. And the weather has shifted so that the fish are all headed my way.
So I’m getting ready. My net is close by. My dad and all my ancestors are whispering in my ear that could be my imagination or the wind, except that it’s bigger than that, whispers saying that it’s time.
My word is “now.”
