Do you know that 13% of people actually love their job? 13% of people worldwide. That means 87% of people wake up in the morning and they say, "Huh, time to make the doughnuts. Huh, Monday morning, got to go to work."

My name is Dave Will. You may remember me from Peach New Media. Peach New Media was Learning Mannequin System now owned by Abila and I left about a year ago, but about two years ago I started thinking about new business ideas. And this is one that kept coming back to me - how can we create a great culture within businesses, within companies, within teams? So that people come to work smiling. They come to work in the balls of their feet, climbing the stairs two at a time.

You know Yvon Chouinard? He's the founder and CEO of Patagonia. Actually I don't know if he's the CEO, he might be the chairman. But regardless he's the founder of Patagonia. Back in the 60's he was doing great things with culture and he has this quote when they started to do well and he started to make some money. And he said, "I know we need to be serious, but I wanted to people coming to work in the balls of their feet, climbing the stairs two at a time."

And I love that quote. That shows the enthusiasm in me, the attitude we want our employees come to work, because we know that with greater appreciation and recognition and with this trust and sense of pride in their job people are going to do better, people are going to increase their productivity, in fact, the number that some reports point to is that people are 14% more productive in an environment with an engaged employee base.

Speaking of that, look behind me here, I have this painting on our wall that says, "You make me dog gone happy." I want people at work to feel dog gone happy. And there's a blog post that I think talks to this point exactly. Sports teams do this thing called the sports butt pat. I don't think they call it the sports butt pat, but that's what I call it. And in particular I think about basketball. Some makes a great shot, pat him on the butt in the way back down the court.

But here's the interesting thing somebody misses a free throw. What do they do? They give him a butt pat. So recognition isn't always for when you do something well, recognition is often most needed when you mess up, when you make a mistake, when you need to get back on the horse. So that's something I want you to take with you from this 2 or 3-minute little diatribe of mine is recognition is one piece of a great culture. That's really, really important to consistently deliver not only from you to your team but among your team themselves.
