Episode 1.12: The future starts with Harold Mumford

Trained to be a lawyer, but called to be a teacher, Harold Mumford teaches English, Social Science and Engineering. He fell into it accidentally as a more traditional teacher, but after coaching First Robotics, Harold got sucked into project based learning and started teaching Project Lead the Way Engineering. He trains students to do the work, he wants them to “fire him” and get him out of the way while he leaves them be to do the work. Posing a challenge or problem to solve, he then steps back and watches students grapple with the work and find their own solutions. Industry partners and alumni regularly come into his classroom to mentor students and work alongside them. Harold also builds alignment to the middle school, bringing his own engineering students to the middle school to work with them in their classes and at the STEM night. He strives to build a culture of learning and appreciate kids for what they are and can bring to the table.
